As a new parent both you and your family are probably overjoyed. The first few months has been nothing but wonderful and you are hoping it will stay like this forever. As for yourself when you have a cold there are certain things you should do for your baby when he has a cold. Here are a few ideas which can make it easier for both you and your baby. First of all make sure they get lots of fluids to keep them from dehydrating, this is very important.

In order for your baby to be able to breathe better, purchase one of those mist humidifiers and keep it on while the baby is taking a nap and at night time. This will help loosen up the cough secretions and let them breathe better. A humidifier will also help you if you get a cold so it is not a waste of money.

Keep their head elevated. Try to put something under the baby’s mattress to build up their head elevation. Babies always breathe better if elevated and not laying flat on their back during sickness.

If your child has a bad coughing spell, go in the bathroom turn on the shower with real hot water so it will steam up the bathroom. Sit the baby on your lap and let them breathe in the steam. This will help ease their cough.

Other things you can do to keep your child more comfortable during this time is to make sure you have things around the house to lessen the fever and discomfort like for example infant Tylenol. Also make sure to give lots of love, hugs and kisses just to let them know you are there for them.

Bronchitis is Contagious

Bronchitis is caused by pathogens. It is an inflammation of the large bronchi of the lungs. Bronchitis can be as a result of bacteria or viral infections. The contagious viruses include influenza, rhino virus and respiratory syntactical virus. When a healthy person comes into contact with a person suffering from bronchitis, chances of a bronchitis contagious taking place are high. This is through the mucous, cough and sputum. o Problems squatting down.

o Problems climbing stairs.

o Intermittent skipping or limping during a routine run.

o Sluggishness on the leg, especially on the rear, that happens frequently and ends suddenly.

Luxated patella is categorized in four grades, depending on the severity of the condition:

Grade I: This is when your dog’s kneecap manually dislocates but goes back into place once the pressure is free. This is considered as a mild case with treatment not required. On the other hand, you need to keep a watchful eye on your dog in case the condition gets worse.

Grade II: Your dog’s kneecap dislocates more often, either manually or automatically, when the joint is being flexed and continues to be dislocated until the joint is extended and the leg is twisted into the opposite direction of the dislocation. Considered as middle ground between mild and severe, dogs with grades I and II should be closely monitored in case the condition gets worse.

Grade III: The kneecap dislocates more frequently, whenever the joint is flexed and extended. Dislocation happens when the joint is extended. This is referred to as severe enough for surgery.

Grade IV: The kneecap is permanently dislocated and is unable to be manually be put back into place. This is happens because the groove is too deep or, in some cases, completely missing. At this point, surgery is needed to correct this problem.

Stress Fractures – Causes, Symptoms, Prevention And Treatment

Stress fractures occur when repetitive stresses are applied to a weakened bone. This is a chronic injury, which means that it does not happen from a one-time event, but over an extended period. Improper equipment (worn or improper shoes), muscle imbalances, or improper running and walking gait can all cause stress fractures.

The muscles are designed to act as shock absorbers during impact activities. They take the stress off the skeletal system and the internal organs. When the muscles become fatigued due to a workload that is more than they can handle they will no longer be able to work as shock absorbers. The load is then transferred to the bones. The force is transferred through the bone until it reaches a weak area where it causes a small crack. Over time, that develops into a stress fracture. This process is known as the fatigue theory.

When the human body is subjected to a slight increase in workload it will adapt by getting stronger. The bones, tendons and muscles will all change to handle the increase. Gradually increasing workloads at a rate of no more than 10% a week and varying the training by using cross training techniques will help to off set the overload and repetition often associated with stress fractures.

Warming up properly and preparing the body for the workout will help to keep the muscles from fatiguing as quickly. This will also prevent injuries to the muscles and tendons, which could lead to further weakening of the bones. Injuries to the muscles, tendons or ligaments that support the skeletal system could lead to excess, and awkward, pressure on the bones.

Flexibility is essential as well. Muscles that are flexible will provide more support and, due to their elasticity, absorb more shock. They are also less susceptible to injury, which could lead to an imbalance or improper gait. Stiff muscles will also lead to incorrect running and landing patterns that could lead to extra stress.

Stretching is one of the most under-utilized techniques for improving athletic performance, preventing sports injury and properly rehabilitating sprain and strain injury. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that something as simple as stretching won’t be effective.

For minor stress fractures simply resting and avoiding the offending activity until pain is eliminated may take care of it. However, if the pain returns after re-starting the activity it may be necessary to see a medical professional.

Another helpful method for improved recovery is the use of ultrasound and heat. Ultrasound, or TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) simply uses a light electrical pulse to stimulate the affected area. Some stress fractures require immobilization or reduction of weight bearing stress. An air cast, immobilizing boot, or even crutches may be required.

It is important to keep active during the stress fracture rest period with no-impact activities such as swimming, biking or weight training. This will make the return to activity less painful.

When it is time to return to activity, usually 4-8 weeks after the injury, it is important to work back gradually and identify the error that originally caused the injury and avoid the same mistakes.

I want to focus on this particular pit fall for two reasons. First, it can be quite serious and damaging to a person’s success at generating income from a home based business. As the name suggests, it is paralyzing. It can create a situation where the new home based business professional generates little or no business and little to no income. Unless you are already independently wealthy, this can spell failure for your entrepreneurial dreams.

The second reason I want to focus on this pitfall is that it can happen very innocently and can happen for all the right reasons. That is to say that a person can fall into analysis paralysis by having all the best intentions of doing the best job possible. To understand this concept, it would be a good time to define what is meant by Analysis Paralysis. Analysis paralysis is the state of spending so much time trying to learn everything there is to know about your product or service and the sales process of how you are going to market it, present it and sell it, that you do not actually market your product or service, you do not show anyone your product or service and you do not actually generate any business.

Now, this can truly happen very innocently. If you are the type of person to want to have your own business and create the freedom that comes with this decision, then you are most definitely the type of person that does not settle for OK. You want to do and be your very best. You want the best ads, you want the best presentation, you want to be the best informed and best educated in your field. It is natural for entrepreneurs to want to know it all. Not to mention, when we look at the top producers in our field, what we see are really smooth talking, knowledgeable leaders. They handle questions with the greatest of ease. Well, this comes more from experience than traditional education.

Yes, as an entrepreneur you want to be constantly educating yourself. Self improvement is a must for any leader. That education should definitely include educating yourself on your product or service, the company you are representing and the field you are associated with. But there is a far more important activity for your success, to steal a familiar phrase, “Just do it.” Set aside time each day to learn. Stick to that scheduled time for education and self improvement. Make sure you are working your business during the time you have set aside to work your business. Keep these activities separate and do not let yourself be engulfed with trying to learn everything right now. Doing this, you will not only be more successful as an entrepreneur, but your educational time will be more successful too.

The reason forcing yourself to just get out in the field and start working your business is beneficial to your education is due to its ability to help you focus. You will probably find out that you do not have to know everything to sell your product or service. There are other aspects of your product, service or company that will be very important to know. While you are actively working your company, listen and watch. You will see what features people are really paying attention to and hear what they are interested in knowing about. This will help you focus your education time and keep you from wasting time on things that will not help you with your endeavor.

I always like to point out to my coaching team that they knew enough about the product or service to sign up. Therefore, they know enough about it to sign others up. I have them think back to exactly what happened from the time they first met the person who presented them with the opportunity until the point they signed up. This is all the knowledge you really need to get started. What usually happens when a person signs up to represent the company is they are presented with an overwhelming amount of information. Then, being the type of person they are, they feel they must learn it all.

My advice, Keep It Simple Silly. Write down how you met your representative. Write down what happened between the time you met until they presented you with the opportunity. Write down how they presented the opportunity to you. Write down what happened from the time you were presented the opportunity and the time you signed up, how were you followed up with, what information did you receive, etc. Now duplicate these steps. Duplication is a wonderful thing. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel. There is nothing wrong with improving the wheel, but do not reinvent the wheel.

Pot Bellied Pig Hernias

America’s newest house hold pet seems to be the pot bellied pig. Originally from Vietnam and China, they have found a home here. They are clean, smart, and can be leash trained. In fact, they can even go to puppy school. On the downside they have a very keen sense of smell and coupled with their intelligence means they will figure out how to get into the refrigerator so it needs to be latched. One of their owner’s favorite characteristics is they don’t bark.

Types of hernias

One of the big down sides of pot bellied pigs is that they are very prone to hernias. There are three types of hernias they can get. One of these is abdominal hernias. These generally are small, pose little danger, and will most likely heal themselves. Much more serious are the umbilical hernias. These can become strangulated and kill the animal. The third type of hernia is the inguinal hernia. These are cause by poor techniques during neutering.

Dangerous umbilical hernias

The umbilical hernias, the most dangerous, are genetic in nature. Like any genetic trait, it should be predicable and breed out of the gene pool. However, the most common symptom of an umbilical hernia is an enlarged belly, which they have to begin with. Sometimes it will get diagnosed early if it starts to strangulate as it causes the pig discomfort and they lose their appetite. Radiographs and ultrasounds can be used to diagnose the hernias, but these are expensive to have done “just to check”. Umbilical hernias, therefore, are generally discovered during spay and neutering. At that point there is no longer a need to worry about passing on the gene.

Neutering and spaying

One of the cruelest acts that can befall a pot bellied pig is barnyard neutering. It is not that bad for hogs but not at all appropriate for the little pot bellied pigs. This is for two reasons. One is that it is done at a younger age on pot bellied pigs and more important is that a hog’s testicles hang low, away from the body. A pot bellied pig’s testicles, by contrast, hang very close. The scrotum is cut in two long slices and the testicles squeezed out then sutured.

Inguinal hernias

This is the point where there is a danger in causing an inguinal hernia. If the sutures are not done correctly around the inguinal ring, an inguinal hernia could develop. Often leading to pain radiating down the buttocks or back of the thigh, females are more susceptible to sacroiliac joint pain by a 2:1 ratio. The Si area has very little movement to it, if any, with the hip points often causing pain in the individual’s groin or disc pain mimicking SI pain.

Any injury or sacroiliac joint inflammation in this area tremendously affects body movement as it is a joint that transfers the upper body weight to the lower body. Simple activities such as walking up-and-down the stairs or reaching overhead in cupboards can become severely affected. Current evaluations or treatments of any sacroiliac dysfunctions are controversial – ranging from surgery to exercises.

Too often patients with painful SI joint problems are told their pain is coming from the SI joint, instead of the real culprits – the sacroiliac joint ligaments and surrounding highly innervated tissues. For this reason, surgery fuses the joint because of a misdiagnosis of “abnormal joint mobility.” However, pain is still felt by 50% of all patients who have had the SI joint surgery.

Neutralizing the spine to begin SI exercises

As an alternative to surgery, it has been found that conservative therapy or special exercises work well with SI joint’s inflammation or injury problems. Before beginning any strengthening exercises for sacroiliac joint pain, it is necessary to do a warm-up and neutralize the spine to avoid further pelvic alignment. If not, the faulty alignment will become even more misaligned and cause more pain.

• Standing – Check the status of the lower back by placing the shoulder blades and buttocks and against a flat wall to check on the position of the lower back, as an arch between the lower black and the wall – which is the normal position. To neutralize the spine, stay in the same position but push the center of the back toward the wall.

• Lying down – lie down on a soft mat with knees bent. Arms should be at the side with feet placed apart about a hip width. Create an arc by moving the body upward, drawing the middle back area down while keeping the spine in a normal position. On the mat the blades of the shoulder should be pushed flat, while drawing the chin downwards toward the chest while leaving a size of the fist.

• Sitting – press the buttocks toward the seated chair’s back with the spine placed directly on top of the seat area. Directly in line will be the collarbone over the hip bones, with the breastbone over the tailbone/pubic bone area. Draw the navel gently inward.

Sacroiliac joint pain exercises

The wall squats are simple exercises for working with sacroiliac (SI) joint pain. The basic position is to stand in neutral (see above) while learning on the wall – feet placed at a distance of a thigh length. Bend the knees at an angle of no less than 90 degrees, keeping the body’s weight evenly on both heels. The kneecaps need to be lined with the 2nd toe of each foot. Remember that the shoulder blades, buttocks, middle back, and shoulder blades should be kept flat on wall at all times while bending and lifting. Repetition: 8 to 12 times, three times a week.

Another exercise for sacroiliac joint pain is the pelvic clock, practiced while on the mat with a neutral spine (see above) and bent knees. Imagine the hours of a clock (3 o’clock and 9 o’clock are the hips; 6 o’clock is the tailbone; and 12 o’clock is the navel). Moving the pelvis only while keeping the knees immobile, move the center of the body clockwise and then repeat counter-clockwise. Repetition: 8 to 12 times every other day (do two to three sets on those days).

My Face is So Painful it Can Hurt to Talk


I have had terrible pain and aching in the side of face for about four years. Thinking it was my teeth, I spent a fortune at the dentist, but it made no difference. The doctor says that it’s ‘trigeminal neuralgia’. I’m on a drug called carbemazepine but I still have days when it hurts just to talk or wash. It can also hurt round my eyes, which become red and puffy underneath. Have you any suggestions, please?


I get many letters about this debilitating problem, which I am sure your doctor has diagnosed correctly, Neuralgia refers to nerves. Cords of nerves, bundled, up in fibres surrounded by a protective sheath, run with messages from the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to the muscles, skin and other body organs. Twelve pairs of cranial nerves come from the brain. Sensory nerves pick up touch, pressure, vibration, heat, cold and pain, as well as vision, taste, smell and hearing. Motor cranial nerves carry out the movements of the facial, eye, tongue, swallowing and speech muscles, and of the diaphragm.

The fifth and largest cranial nerve is a mixed nerve, called trigeminal because it has three branches. The top one supplies the upper part of the face, the middle one goes to the cheeks, nose and upper lip, and the lower one to the mouth, teeth, tongue and lower jaw. If the trigeminal nerve malfunctions, it can cause sensory problems including pain or motor complications such as difficulty chewing. Tic douloureux is a painful facial spasm that may occur with trigeminal neuralgia. The nerves are so sensitive that the tic can be triggered by a light touch, strong breeze, even a movement. Each attack can last for several minutes to several hours. The pain is so intense that some people opt to have the nerve surgically destroyed and face the prospect of a numb mouth, rather than more attacks.

Trigeminal neuralgia is hard to treat, its the underlying cause is still not known. Strong painkillers are usually prescribed, and sometimes anti-epileptic drugs, such as carbemazepine, to suppress the spasm or tic. The problem, from what you say, is that yours is not the tic type but comes in waves.

My suggestions for mitigating the painful bouts are as follows

* Eat soft foods, so that you don’t need to chew a lot. Try soup, mushy rice, mashed potatoes, minced meat, turkey and chicken, overcooked or pureed vegetables, porridge soft-boiled eggs, mashed bananas and fresh non-citrus fruit and vegetable juices.

* Avoid cold foods, such as ice cream or ice cold drinks, also citrus fruits, coffee, excess salt, sugar and alcohol, which can all aggravate the pain.

* I have found massage and acupuncture to be the best form of treatment My special neck massage improves the blood flow to the brainstem and midbrain, via the vertebral arteries in the neck. These arteries have tiny blood vessels (called vasa nervorum) sprouting from them, which feed the trigeminal and other cranial nerves. Improving blood flow to nerves can cure inflammation. I have massaged the necks of patients in the middle of an attack and witnessed instant relief. Rub along the sides of the neck and also give the neck traction by putting your hands round the base of the skull and very gently pulling it away from the shoulders.Also massage trigger points behind the ears, down the jaw, under the lower lip and down the lines from nose to mouth. Massage these points with your thumb or index finger for one or two minutes each, twice a day, until the pain vanishes.

* To help you relax, take Biorelax: one twice daily for one month. Also take vitamin B-complex: one daily for two months. Listening to relaxation CD or tape in the evenings before bed should also help.

* As soon as you feel an attack coming on, do the following retention breathing exercise for five minutes. Inhale deeply and hold your breath for 10 to 15 seconds, then – just when you think you are about to burst (don’t panic) – breathe out very gently. Inhale slowly and hold your breathe again for as long as you can. Practise daily, so that it redness and puffiness under your eyes, I suspect that this may be linked to the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary functions, including breathing and body temperature control, rather than the effects of the trigeminal neuralgia I think it would be worth asking your doctor to investigate. Perhaps you could be referred to a neurologist for more tests.

Sore Throat Tests
