Medicinal raw of radishes is in the roots and fresh juice. Fiber of radish assists in the removal of cholesterol from the body, which is important for the prevention of atherosclerosis. The Various Causes of Heart Disease

Controlling Chronic Lymphedema – A Surmountable Challenge

Hear ye, hear ye, lymphedema people! Good news! Chronic lymphedema can be controlled. Mine (involving my left arm) came about as a result of breast cancer surgery and radiation in 1996. Today my affected arm is not noticeably larger than the other.

 

It’s important to find resources on this condition. My main source of information is the National Lymphedema Network (NLN), which provides a wealth of facts on its website (www.lymphnet.org).  If you notice swelling in a limb or your trunk or breast, go to a knowledgeable physician. I found a breast surgeon who gladly wrote out a prescription for me to see a certified lymphedema therapist. The NLN provides information about the standards necessary for certification of professionals in this business.  

 

The standard acceptable treatment for chronic lymphedema in the United States is complete decongestive therapy (CDT). In the first phase of this lymphatic therapy the therapist performs a massage technique called manual lymph drainage (MLD), which redirects the lymph fluid through alternative pathways. Then he or she applies lymphedema bandages, which remain on the arm for 24 hours. Every weekday for six weeks the bandages were removed for massage and reapplied. 

 

After lymphatic treatment by the therapist, the patient transitions to the self-maintenance stage, in which the lymphedema patient cares for the limb for a lifetime. In this phase of lymphedema management I wore a lymphedema compression sleeve to control swelling during the day and then applied bandages at night. In addition, I performed self-massage and gentle exercises that the therapist taught me.

 

Alternatives to bandages exist on the market. The lymphedema therapist is a good source to determine suitable substitutes for a particular patient. Brand names include Reid, Circaid, Sigvaris and Jovi. Other lymphedema vendors, at least for sleeves, include Jobst, Juzo, and Medi. After six months of bandaging I chose the Reid sleeve with the help of medical professionals. This garment and its sisters maintain compression using Velcro straps and/or special foam patterns. I found my Reid sleeve a true godsend, since it eliminated the need for wrapping and unwrapping as well as rolling bandages every night.

 

After a year using the Reid sleeve I found I didn’t need it anymore at night to keep the swelling under control. So now I wear only the lymphedema sleeve on my arm daily with no night-time garment. On a plane trip or climbing a sizeable mountain, I wear an old compression sleeve over my current one, for extra protection against swelling. Also I don a hand glove if necessary.

 

Swimming is great exercise for arm lymphedema. I joined a club with an indoor pool just to get the year-round benefits that such a pool offers. Also, active elongation exercises on a resistance ball help to stretch scars to increase flow of the lymph fluid to the bloodstream.

 

Lymphedema patients who are frequent fliers should be careful that their equipment is not damaged by overzealous security guards at the airport. Here are my gems of advice, based on personal experience: bring a prescription slip describing any special arm garments or pumps being brought aboard the plane and check as baggage as many lymphedema devices as possible. 

 

Herbal supplements may keep chronic lymphedema under control, but they are not regulated by the FDA and might interfere with chemo and other drugs. Before taking any, the lymphedema patient should check first with his/her oncologist. While benzopyrenes and horse-chestnut are mentioned most commonly as controlling chronic lymphedema, I find, with my doctor’s blessing, that Butcher’s Broom controls swelling in my hand.

 

Don’t let chronic lymphedema interfere with your daily activities. Many lymphedema patients enjoy near normal lives by practicing moderation and complying with sage advice to the extent necessary to tamp down lymphedema swelling.

5 Ways to Prevent a Heart Attack

As a former emergency medical technician (EMT) who worked on an ambulance in downtown Denver, Colorado I witnessed a number of dramatic medical events. From the sad amusement park ride accident to the 3:30 a.m. call for “belly button lint” (really), I gained a lot of experience. Aside from the aftermath of high-speed car accidents, nothing required more focused and quick attention than MI’s (myocardial infarction or heart attacks). We recognized that the passing minutes meant the heart was slowly losing its ability to pump and we had to act quickly.

Today, as a physician I understand, more than ever, the importance of preventing a heart attack before it ever requires a call to 911 and a trip to the emergency room. Below I outline 5 simple steps you can take to avoid the EMTs from making a stop at your house.

1. Increase Your Exercise

It seems like everyday a new study comes out showing the benefit of exercise and it’s clear that exercise is “good for you.” I typically recommend increasing your activity by at least 30 minutes a day, three times a week. This could be a simple 2-mile walk around your neighborhood-what better way to get to know your neighbors? Getting the heart rate up 20-30% higher than its normal resting levels has been shown to decrease poor cardiovascular events by nearly a third. Plus, exercise has a number of invaluable effects on mood, energy levels and of course, weight loss.

2. Remember Your Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Also known as “fish oils” or “essential fatty acids”, omega-3 fats are highly beneficial for heart health. The anti-inflammatory effect of these good fats keeps the heart and other blood vessels fit while improving overall brain and digestive health. Be sure to get “clean” sources of omega-3 fatty acid in your diet, which includes non-farm raised fish (wild caught) and high quality over-the-counter fish oils. Be careful to get mercury-free sources of fish oil. Also when taking a fish oil supplement, be sure you’re getting over 2,000 mg of total omegas a day and put your nose in the bottle and get a good whiff. If the bottle smells like rotten fish, toss the stuff-the oil is oxidized and is not providing the beneficial effects of the omega-3 oils…plus it is probably harmful to your health.

3. Know Your Risk Factors

Yearly medical exams can help assess your cardiovascular risk. A thorough clinical assessment by your doctor, including your family and social history, can evaluate your heart health. I also find it important to monitor your heart health with coronary artery scans using high-tech diagnostic imaging that measures calcium levels in the blood vessels around the heart. Your doctor can order this test to be done at most imaging facilities. We now know that higher levels of calcium in these vessels are more predictive of heart attacks than calcium-free blood vessels. Also, be sure your doctor keeps an eye on your waist line measurement, cholesterol, triglyceride and CRP (C-reactive protein, which is a marker for heart inflammation).

4. Eat Your Greens

The foundation of good heart health should be in your diet. Maintaining a good intake of lean protein, high fiber, vegetables and good fats will keep your heart pitter patting away. Research shows that dark leafy greens such as spinach, broccoli, and mustard greens can be the most cardio-protective, by packing in calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins A, C, E and K. Be sure to get at least 3-4 servings of these powerful foods a day and avoid those foods high in saturated fats and sugar as well as pastas and other simple carbohydrates.

5. Be Sure to Get Enough Vitamin D

Maintaining higher levels of vitamin D has proven to be quite helpful in keeping the heart happy. You might have heard that you get most of your vitamin D from the sun and you’d be right. But, new studies have shown that even with the recommended 20 minutes of daily sun exposure, most folks are still deficient in vitamin D. Some believe it has to do with our increased awareness of skin cancer and the importance of covering our skin with either clothes or sunscreen. Others believe it’s a deficiency in some of the co-factors that are required to convert sunlight on the skin to its active form deeper within the body.

Whichever is the case, and it’s probably a combination of both, having enough vitamin D is vital for good heart, bone, skin and immune system health. Actually, a recent study demonstrated that healthy levels of vitamin D throughout your life can actually increase your lifespan!

Be sure to get at least 20-30 minutes of direct sun exposure a day or consider 500 – 1,000 IU of oral vitamin D3 supplementation. And be sure to have your vitamin D levels checked-it’s a simple blood test that your doctor can perform. Your heart will thank you for it!

Symptoms of Heart Attack in Women

Heart disease remains the #1 killer of women in the United States. Unfortunately, heart disease often goes unrecognized and untreated until the woman has a disabling or fatal heart attack. Women often have different symptoms than men do, and not all physicians know what to look for. Not all women know what to look for.

Prodromal Symptoms

Most women who have heart attacks experience ‘prodromal’ symptoms for a month or more before the incident. Prodromal symptoms predict the onset of a disease. If we recognize prodromal symptoms, sometimes we can prevent the heart attack that is about to happen.

Men are not as likely to have prodromal symptoms as women; 95% of women in a recent National Institutes of Health study had one or more of the following symptoms for a month or more before their heart attacks:

Severe fatigue

Severe sleep disturbances

Shortness of breath

Indigestion

Anxiety

Chest Discomfort

Only a third to a half of all women have chest discomfort when they have a heart attack. Those who do experience discomfort don’t usually describe it as pain, either. Women are more likely to say they have aching, pressure or tightness in their chests than they are to use the word, ‘pain.’

Heart Attack Symptoms

Women who are having a heart attack are more likely to experience one or more of the following symptoms than they are to have chest discomfort:

Sudden, severe shortness of breath

Sudden weakness

Sudden, severe fatigue

Breaking out in a cold sweat

Sudden dizziness.

Women do have different heart attack symptoms than men do, but heart disease is just as disabling and just as fatal to women as it is to men. Recognizing the symptoms women are most likely to experience with a heart attack could save your life.
