In either case, like most fungi, those that infect the nail like a warm, moist environment to thrive. As a result feet are often a very inviting area for colonisation. Perhaps as a result of this, toenail fungal infections are much more common than fingernail infections.

This means that living with someone with a toenail infection does not mean you are automatically going to catch it, yet it is likely to spread from one toe to another on the affected individual.

Chronic Cough – Allergy or Something Else?

Cough is common, and can linger, especially during the allergy season. But does cough equal allergy?

A cough can be an annoying, embarrassing symptom, or an important clue leading to rapid diagnosis and effective treatment. It is one of the most common reasons to see a lung specialist, accounting for more than one third of new patient visits in many practices. There is an abundance of confusing medical literature available, most of it on the internet; a recent search found more than 300 articles related to chronic cough published so far this year, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

Coughing itself is remarkably effective. Acute cough is our primary defense mechanisms to protect the airways and lungs from unwanted invaders, such as aspirated food or secretions laden with bacteria or acid from the stomach. Receptors line the major airways to trigger an acute cough, which can create flow rates approaching the speed of sound! This rapid air flow creates shearing forces that move secretions up and out, but unwanted effects, such as rib fractures, sprained chest muscles and even syncope (brief loss of consciousness) can result.

What makes a cough chronic? The accepted time scale is three weeks without an obvious precipitating cause. There are many clues to the cause of a cough which your physician can review with you. Generally a carefully taken health history and physical exam will identify many major concerns, such as asthma or allergy, exposure to inhaled toxins, or medicines known to cause cough. Smoking is of course an irritant; it inhibits normal mucus clearance mechanisms, and most long term smokers have a chronic cough, though some are not bothered by it. The timing, nature and history of the cough are important to review, along with associated respiratory symptoms and findings on physical exam, such as abnormal breath sounds. Chest x-ray and tests of lung function are helpful in the detection of unexpected or subtle abnormalities, such as airflow obstruction indicating asthma or COPD. “Post infectious” cough can follow respiratory infections, either minor or major, and can last for months. A state of airway hyper-responsiveness develops even though the infection itself has resolved. Frequently anti-inflammatory medicines, such as those used for asthma, are given to bring the airway back to normal. Acid reflux is another occult cause for chronic cough, as is allergic post-nasal drainage. Frequently these conditions produce minimal symptoms except for the cough. Surprisingly the majority of well established coughs have more than one cause as their basis. All must be treated, or resolution does not occur.

In most cases, rare or life threatening causes are easily ruled out and common causes, such as asthma, allergic drainage and acid reflux, are diagnosed and treated effectively. Resolution and patient satisfaction depend heavily on a systematic evaluation and adequate length of therapy, thus a good working relationship with your Physician is key.

What is Psychological Depression?

It is one of the most common and most serious mental health problems facing people today. Psychological depression can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively throughout the day or even to have the motivation to get out of bed in the morning and it is in fact so common that over 1 in 5 Americans can expect to get some form of depression in their lifetime.

The causes behind depression are complex and not yet fully understood but we are able to treat it much more effectively because we have a better understanding of the causes of clinical depression.

The first step in fighting depression is to understand what it is, how it affects you, and what causes it. Unfortunately, many people do not recognize that depression is a treatable illness. Most people with a depressive illness do not seek treatment; although the great majority, even those whose depression is extremely severe can be helped. This condition is so common that over 1 in 5 Americans can expect to get some form of depression in their lifetime.

Symptoms of major depression include at least five of the following symptoms (at least one must include the first and second listed below) and they must be present nearly every day, all day, for 2 weeks: Persistent depressed mood, including feelings of emptiness or sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, feelings of hopelessness or pessimism, feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness, insomnia, early morning awakening or oversleeping, change in eating (either loss or increased appetite), decreased energy, fatigue or feeling slowed down, restlessness and irritability, difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions, thoughts of suicide or death, persistent physical symptoms, such as headaches, digestive disorders or chronic pain. A less severe type of depression, Dysthymia, involves long-term, chronic symptoms that do not disable, but keep one from functioning well or from feeling good.

The most important thing anyone can do for the depressed person is to help him or her get an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. The guidelines for diagnosis of major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder are found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM IV). The depressed mood must persist for greater than two weeks in order to warrant this diagnosis.

The first step to getting appropriate treatment for depression is a physical examination by a physician. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people who suffer from depression. If a diagnosis of depression is made, treatment with medication and/or psychotherapy will help the depressed person return to a happier, more fulfilling life. Most do best with combined treatment: medication to gain relatively quick symptom relief and psychotherapy to learn more effective ways to deal with life’s problems, including depression.

Psychological depression is not something you can just “snap out of”, it is a serious medical condition that affects the chemistry of the brain. With the appropriate medical treatment the vast majority of people of suffer from its effects can live depression free lives.

Are Panic Symptoms and Phobias the Same?

They are only similar to a certain degree. Both are irrational reactions to fear and can make you nervous and perhaps paralyze you with fear to the extent you cannot function as you normally would.

However your condition changes from panic to a phobia when you start to avoid the situation that causes you the fear. This is how almost all people with a debilitating phobia of public speaking started their phobia. One or several perceived embarrassments in front of one or more people caused them to start avoiding the situation. Notice the word perceived. Even if the audience didn’t notice, the subconscious picks up what you tell it. The same goes for any other phobia. The fear causes the person to start avoidance. Whether it is bridges, people, traffic or the workplace just to name a few.

Some people may face the same situation as the anxiety prone individual faces and only feel slight discomfort if any, and just shake it off, so to speak. However the anxiety prone individual starts to ponder the situation and process the thoughts of discomfort and they start planning how to avoid that discomfort in the future. They may go on for days thinking about the situation. This process only heightens the anxiety level.

Some professionals now believe that some physical attributes of illnesses such as IBS are worsened by the fear of the consequence of the illness. For example a person may have had a close call in not being able to get to the restroom in time or maybe they didn’t make it to the restroom in time. In the anxiety prone individual, not being near a restroom can quickly become a phobia. The phobia in this situation is the fear of the embarrassment of soiling their clothes and being humiliated in public.

When the fear leads to avoidance, then the fear has become a phobia.

Some people may have a simple phobia of one thing. They manage to avoid that one thing until one day they are forced to deal with it, such as a forced speech by the boss or forced business trip on an airplane. In the extreme anxiety prone person, the phobia can be something as simple as standing in line at the grocery store. Dealing with the fear and the phobia is important so that you don’t live your life in fear of things that are normal to everyday life.

In fact, avoidance of one thing can lead to avoidance of another. For example a phobia of crowds, traffic and cars can lead to agoraphobia, where you are too fearful to wander outside the safety of your living environment.

This is one of the main reasons it’s so important to face your fears, one by one. I’m not advocating that you become a lion tamer to conquer your fear of lions. I’m just suggesting that you face the fears that keep you from being the person that you dream of being. You can do it, but only you can do it. I speak from experience. Face the fear and panic and in the process, you will never know the phobia.

The Relationship Between Fear, Anxiety, And Depression

Ultimately, all our depression and anxiety are born out of some sort of fear or the realization of a fear. Fear, according to the Bible, brings torment. This article explores the various mental, emotional, and spiritual torments that often lead to depression and anxiety.

There is a direct correlation between fear and depression. In fact, you will discover that highly depressed people often have fears that are very real to them and very near to their thinking.

To break it down a bit more, anxiety is the fear of your fears. Depression is often the result of feeling as if you are living your fears. For example, a loved one that is sick does not necessarily bring depression, but there could be a lot of anxiety over his health. If, God forbid, he dies, people often are plunged into depression because they are now living their fears and do not have the wherewithal to handle it well.

1 John 4:18 – There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

From my experience as a counselor and pastor for nearly two decades, I have come to see the tremendous truth of the above Bible verse. Fear brings a torment to the psyche that affects the emotions, mind, and spirit. Let’s list a few of these torments.

  1. Fear consumes the mind and becomes the only thing a person can see.
  2. Fear can destroy and limit your relationships as few relationships can withstand the pressure of being dominated by fear.
