Menopause – Is It a Welcomed Change?

Everything in life changes. Probably the only thing that doesn’t change is change itself. Life is a constant change. Everyone has to adapt to these changes in order to live. Some changes may not be favorable and can throw people into depression. Other changes are welcomed opportunities and can uplift our spirits. Still, there are changes that are only unique to women.

Menopause is a change a woman usually expects to experience when she reaches the age 40 and above. Menopause occurs when the ovarian function starts to decline. Accordingly, estrogen level also decreases. The decrease in estrogen level creates various irregularities in a woman’s menstrual cycle. With the decrease in estrogen level comes also the declining amount and duration of the menstrual flow. Spotting, episodes of amenorrhea or lack of menstrual periods and abnormally frequent menstruations, or polymenorrhea, are also characteristic signs of a decreased ovarian function. It has been observed that these irregularities can last between a few months to several years before the actual cessation of menstruation occurs.

A woman may not know it, but there are a lot of changes she undergoes during and after menopause. Her body’s system may experience various changes, which usually occur after the complete cessation of menstruation. During menopause, a woman’s reproductive system undergoes changes; including the shrinkage of the vulval structures and the loss of some subcutaneous fats. Menopause also causes flattening of the vaginal rugae. These changes are usually the reasons why women experience bleeding after sexual contact or douching. Furthermore, changes in the reproductive system after menopause cause vaginal itching, discharge from bacterial invasion and capillary loss in the atrophied vaginal walls. Vaginal dryness and decreased lubrication from the vaginal walls are also caused by menopause. Additionally, the declining level of estrogen during menopause results in progressive pelvic relaxation.

During menopause, the urinary system also undergoes a lot of changes. The declining estrogen level causes atrophic cystitis. This condition results in frequent urination, pyuria or the presence of pus in urine and incontinence. Menopause can also cause a change in the mammary system resulting in a reduced size of a woman’s breasts. Menopause can also affect the integumentary system. The integumentary system is the system in our body consisting of the skin, hair and nails; all of which protects our body from the external environment. Estrogen deprivation during menopause results in the loss of skin elasticity, loss of pubic and axillary hair and can sometimes even cause alopecia. Menopause can also cause changes in a woman’s autonomic nervous system. The changes in the autonomic nervous system are the reasons why a woman under menopause experiences hot flashes and night sweats. These are occurrences that affect almost 60% of all women in menopause. The changes in a woman’s autonomic nervous system are the reasons why menopausal women experience vertigo, rapid heart beat or tachycardia, shortness of breath and irritability. Emotional disturbances are also classic signs of women in menopause. These emotional disturbances include nervousness, irritability and bouts of anger. All these are also caused by autonomic nervous system changes during menopause. Menopause can also stimulate osteoporosis and atherosclerosis. The decrease in estrogen level during menopause has been linked to osteoporosis. However, its effect has not been clearly indicated with atherosclerosis.

Finally, all these changes a woman experiences during menopause can affect how she looks at life during and after menopause. Positively accepting these changes will give her a new and exciting life ahead, after menopause.

Social Anxiety Disorder – What is Social Phobia

Social anxiety or social phobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by severe and persistent anxiety when in social situations, be it when interacting with others, or even only being observed.

People suffering from this phobia fear of being amongst (unfamiliar) people, because they will feel under scrutiny and anxious of behaving in a way that might humiliate or embarrass them.

People with social phobia are aware their fears are irrational and their anxiety over exaggerated, but apprehension will make them do whatever it takes to evade facing the feared situation.

This greatly interferes with normal life activities of people suffering from social phobia. They will start avoiding all sorts of social situations – and when that proves inevitable, they will be extremely worried – sometimes for weeks in advance. This is called “anticipatory anxiety”.

When the dreaded event is over, they will continue worrying how they’ve appeared to others. Did they found them anxious, or strange, or…?

This only increases the level of anticipatory anxiety they will feel the next time, and the vicious circle of social phobia continues…

It is natural to feel some degree of anxiety and self-consciences in certain social situations, like speaking in public or attending a job interview.

What’s different with social phobics is that their fear is continually present and their anxiety out of proportions to the actual situation.

This disorder is not just shyness or nervousness.

Social anxiety is a medical condition that can lead to a number of emotional and physical symptoms.

People who suffer from social anxiety find everyday tasks, like going grocery shopping or answering the phone, overwhelmingly stressful or even downright impossible to handle. That can cost them not only their social life, but even a job, and can leave them on the margins of society.

Because some level of social fear is perfectly normal and expected in some situations, social anxiety disorder is often left undiagnosed and untreated. It is estimated that about 3 – 13 % of population suffers from social anxiety in some form or way.

According to Social Anxiety Institute, social phobia is the largest anxiety disorder, and the third largest mental health care problem in the world today.

It is estimated that about one quarter of all people with social anxiety disorder use alcohol to self-medicate in order to appear more social.

Other comorbid disorders commonly occurring with social phobia are agoraphobia and major depression.

Social phobia affects men and women equally.

It usually appears before the age of 25.

Studies suggest that there’s no one single cause of social anxiety disorder, but rather an unfortunate combination of different biological and psychological factors. An imbalance of brain chemicals – serotonin neurotransmitters, some scientists noted, may be linked with this disorder.

Social phobia, however, can be “cured”!

Social anxiety treatment usually includes medication and cognitive behavioral therapy.

This can be disabling if left untreated. If you suspect that you, or someone you know, may have symptoms of social phobia, don’t hesitate to seek help from a qualified medical professional!

This is Not How You Cut Toenails

Do you cut your own toenails or do you have it cleaned in the salon? For some who do not afford having to go to the salon every time they need some cleaning up to do, they just do it themselves. Nevertheless, it’s not always that simple even if you have all the tools that is needed in cutting and cleaning the toenails.

Here is a story about a woman in her 30s who came to clinic because her right big toe is in pain:

A week ago, she began to feel a hurting feeling in her right big toenail. As the days pass by, her toenail began to turn red and aside from it hurting, it is also now throbbing. There was no history of a bump or it hitting anything. However, she remembered that she cut her toenails with a nail clipper just before feeling her toe ache. This is the first time that she has ever experienced this and she is taking Tylenol to remove the pain. Nevertheless, there is no relief for the pain. There is no other complication along with this toe problem.

The bad thing about this is that she is having a problem walking or wearing a shoe as she could not move her feet that well without feeling pain.

Upon doctor’s exam, it is found that the right toenail has grown into the skin next to it. It is swelling really badly but there is no discharge. What happened is that the woman developed an ingrown toenail. When you cut your toenail too close to the skin, it gets squeezed under it as it grows.

At first, you will feel the pain in the area and later on, you will observe that the affected toe becomes red and swells. If it gets infected, it might develop pus in the area.

For relief, you can prepare a soak bath of warm water and immerse your feet in that for several times in a day. To avoid further pain, you must avoid closed shoes. In preventing it from catching bacterial infection, apply antibiotic ointment to the area for disinfection.

If you have difficulty dealing with it by yourself, approach a medical professional urgently so as to find a surgical solution to the problem. You might also need medications for pain and infection.

Given these solutions and cure, it is still best to prevent this from happening by being careful in trimming your toenails. Cut straight across and not too low. Also, avoid shoes that are too tight-fitting. Furthermore, if you are not particularly sure about this, have it cut in the salon instead.

In the case of the patient, her toe was applied with an anesthetic and was subjected into a simple surgical procedure. The ingrown toenail was cut and removed and was applied with an antibiotic ointment for disinfection. After several days, the patient returned to the doctor for follow up. Her toenail feels much better now than before. The doctor gave her toenail-cutting advice to avoid ingrown nail development and to prevent yellow toe nails. This is a bonus perk that the patient got from her physician as she might also need problems in yellow toe help.

Toenail Fungus Cure – 3 Things That Don’t Work As a Cure For Nail Fungus

Nail fungus can make your toenails look down right nasty. Although nail fungus won’t kill you it can be a real downer in your social life among friends and family. I’ve often thought if they ever wondered why I wore close toed shoes in the dead of summer. Usually I don’t have to ponder that thought too long because my 7 year old son is quick to point out to everyone that he meets that his Dad has a “fungus toe”. I am extremely embarrassed at that point and am ready to get out of the situation quickly! After tons of those scenarios I began to get serious about finding toenail fungus remedies that actually worked.

I’ve tried the following popular home remedy methods and they all failed miserably:

  • Vick’s Vapor Rub
    • Result: Nothing, but a toe that smelled like menthol
  • Listerine Mouth Wash
    • Result: My wife wouldn’t let me in the bed because she didn’t want the sheets to stink like antiseptic. It did nothing for my toenail.
  • Tea Tree Oil
    • Result: I had high hopes for this one…and all I got was a toe that smelled like a cross between the Listerine and the Vapor Rub.

I followed the instructions for those three potential remedies to a tee. No deviation whatsoever and tried them for several months. It wasn’t just a hit and miss application for me. It quickly became a religion because I wanted to get rid of the nail fungus quickly. I was fed up with it and couldn’t take the embarrassment any longer. For Pete’s sake, my 7 year old was spreading the word about my nasty toenail fungus faster than a speeding bullet. I had to get it fixed fast because the father son talk about how some things were private and could only be discussed with his mother and me (like toenail fungus) just didn’t seem to sink in, and I really couldn’t punish him for his remarks. He was just a little kid telling the truth…his Dad had a fungus toe. Actually, as soon as he told someone about it he would pipe up and say “Show ’em your toe Dad!”

Ankle Sprains and Strains – Rolling and Injuring the Ankle Can Cause Problems – Brace Yourself

Where does ankle pain come from? Often times, when you suffer from ankle pain, then it is usually due to a sprain.

1.) Ankle Sprain Definition

A sprain is defined as an injury to a ligament (in this case it would be to your ankle). A ligament is basically a thick, fibrous like tissue that connects bones to each other. You can injure these ligaments by stretching them too far beyond their comfort zone. This can happen in a fall, or when you overextend yourself somehow. When the ligament itself is overstretched or even torn, this is referred to as a sprain.

2.) In Most Cases What You Will Find…

In most cases a sprain is caused when your ankle is twisted inward, causing you to bear weight on the outside of your ankle. Needless to say this can make the ankle very unstable. You may also notice swelling, bruising and difficulty in weight bearing after an injury to the ligament happens.

3.) The Healing Process

Once the ankle is sprained then it may take a few weeks or even months to fully heal. The time it takes is associated with how badly you have injured the ligament. As a result, you may notice that the effected ankle may remain slightly weaker than an uninjured ankle, even after the healing process has occurred.

4.) Ankle Strain Definition

Strains can occur when you injure the muscles or tendons that attach muscles to bones. By pulling too far on a muscle you can injure the muscle or tendon. This can happen when you muscle is contracting and you perform an activity quickly in the opposite direction. Strains can also be associated with chronic activities that will overstretch a muscle fiber.

5.) Ankle Support

If you have ever really hurt your ankle in any of the aforementioned ways, then you will really want to consider getting an ankle support. These days, nobody has the time to wait around on the couch to let their ankle heal over the course of several weeks! Ankle supports can help to reduce pain, increase stability and they can also boost your confidence, so you do not have to constantly worry about your injury or the pain associated with an injury. In the end it is your choice, but you should not look back wishing you would have done more for your ankle while you had the time. Small injuries can become larger injuries when you neglect the warning signs.

Leaky Gut Syndrome And Constipation – The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Constipation means different things to different people. It might mean having irregular bowel movements for some and also mean difficulty passing stools, hard stools or bloating after a bowel movement. Dealing with constipation can be a miserable experience, but imagine having to deal with it over a long period of time. Those who have leaky gut have to not only deal with chronic constipation, but also cramps, nausea and a feeling of being bloated.

To relieve their symptoms, many resort to taking anti-depressants, pain medication, acupuncture and most notably laxatives. Those who resort to these methods experience no improvement whatsoever in their health. Some even notice that their symptoms seem to be getting worse.

For one, taking pain medication such as antibiotics is actually killing off the good, beneficial bacteria in your gut, while allowing the harmful ones such as yeast and fungi to flourish in its place.

Most people use laxatives to relieve constipation. A scary number rely on it as their primary source of relief. Did you know that the more you use laxatives, the more your colon comes to depend on them? You are unknowingly making your colon walls weak by conditioning it to rely on laxatives.

Let us take a look at some 3 common laxatives and why you should stay away from them:

  • (Stimulant Laxatives) Dulcolax, Ex-Lax, Similar Alternatives: These laxatives work by stimulating the nerves in your colon, therefore forcing them to move. Unfortunately, they contain harsh chemicals and toxins that create inflammation and further damage and irritate your intestinal lining and bowels. A major drawback of this is that they weaken your bowel and rectal muscles. You become so dependent on them that you can no longer move your bowels without using them.
  • (Stool Softerners) Colace and Similar Alternatives: These work by forcing fats and water into your stool, making it softer and easier to pass. They also contain harsh chemicals and toxins that create inflammation and further damage and irritate your intestinal bowels and linings. Like Stimulant laxatives, these too create dependence in order to move your bowels.
  • (Osmotic Laxatives) Epsom Salt, Milk Of Magnesia and Similar Alternatives: Just like stool softeners, these work by forcing water into your stool to make it softer and easier to pass. The downside is that it forces way more water than usual into your stool, which can lead to dehydration and throw off your electrolyte balance. Just like stimulant and stool softeners, you can also become dependent on them.

Rather than use harmful laxatives, try stool bulking agents instead. These gentler form of laxatives don’t contain harsh chemicals and toxins and most importantly, they don’t create dependence.

Food Intolerances, Probiotics, Leaky Gut Syndrome And Constipation- How They Are All Linked Together.

Recent study shows that food intolerances are a common cause of chronic constipation. Becoming intolerant to food is when you eat a particular food that creates an autoimmune reaction within your intestines. The reaction creates inflammation, which then prevents you from being able to properly digest your food. If you continue to eat those particular foods, undigested particles leak into your bloodstream and your body immediately scrambles to get rid of the intrusion. This leads to an overactive immune system, which then leads to autoimmune diseases.

Food intolerances also lead to constipation, so in order to get rid of constipation and inflammation, therefore healing leaky gut, you have to identify the foods you are intolerant to and stop eating it. These foods can vary depending on the person but common intolerant foods are wheat, pasteurized dairy products, soy, sugar, white table salt, and artificial sweeteners.

Let us go back to pain medication and how people use it to relieve constipation. Remember how I stated that pain medication kill off your beneficial bacteria? Well, since your good bacteria is gone, you are going to need to replenish it and this is where probiotics shine. Probiotics are microorganisms that are similar to the good bacteria found in your gut. This is probably the only supplement that I would suggest using because it balances your intestine tract, diminishes allergic reactivity and prevents reproduction of bad bacteria (yeast, fungi, toxins, etc).

What’s equally great is that there is evidence that shows a probiotic drink containing beneficial bacteria called Lactobacillus casei Shirota, or a placebo has been proven to improve the severity of constipation and stool consistency.

Some important Tips To Help Overcome Constipation:

  • Drink lots and lots of water. This cannot be stressed enough. This is especially important for those who drink sugary and caffeinated drinks daily. Dehydration is another cause of constipation, so make sure you drink adequate amounts of water daily to keep your body replenished.
  • Eliminate your food intolerances like grain and dairy products. One cause of constipation is horrible diet choices, so make sure to replace your food intolerances with a balanced diet containing meat, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
  • Make probiotics an important part of your diet. Be sure to include it in your daily regimen.

Hypothyroidism and Amenorrhea

Amenorrhea is defined as the absence of menstruation. It also refers to a condition where a woman misses one or more menstrual periods. The condition is broken down into primary and secondary amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea signifies no menstrual periods by age 16. Secondary amenorrhea refers to a situation where a woman was previously menstruating, but then ceased menstrual periods. If you are a healthy sexually active female, missing a period would most likely be due to pregnancy.

There are many other explanations for the onset of amenorrhea besides pregnancy. Amenorrhea does not usually result from a serious condition. If you do not know why your period has stopped, it can be distressing. You will need to consult your doctor to get to the root of the problem.

Hypothyroidism Quick Facts

Hypothyroidism is a condition that describes an underactive thyroid gland. This condition develops when the thyroid gland is not producing enough of certain important hormones. Women of the age group of 50 and over are more likely to develop hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism disrupts the optimal balance of chemical reactions within the body. It is difficult to detect in the early stages, but as time passes, the untreated condition can lead to several health problems including joint pain, excessive weight gain, infertility and even heart disease.

In some cases, hypothyroidism has been the underlying cause for at least one type of amenorrhea. Once you’re doctor is able to identify the underlying cause, treatment of this cause should restore the normal menstrual cycle.

The Signs

A clear sign of amenorrhea is lack of menstrual periods:

  • Primary amenorrhea: no menstrual period by age 16.
  • Secondary amenorrhea: no periods for 3 to 6 months or even longer after previously menstruating.

There are other symptoms of amenorrhea that can manifest depending on its cause. In addition to lack of periods, the symptoms can include nipple discharge, headaches, changes in vision, or even more than usual hair growth on the face and torso. This hair growth symptom is also called hirsutism.

When To Pay Your Doctor A Visit

For primary or secondary amenorrhea, you should consult your physician if you find yourself experiencing any of then following:

  • no menstrual period by age 16.
  • have had no periods for 3 to 6 months or longer.

Doctor’s Appointment

You will most like pay a visit to your primary care physician or a gynecologist. To prepare in advance you should make lists of important information you want to ask the doctor since time will be limited.

  • A detailed description of all your symptoms is useful information for your doctor including when they began. Tracking the irregularities of your periods on a calendar will help greatly.
  • List all medications you take. You should include the dosage amounts as well. Don’t forget any supplements or non-prescription drugs.
  • Include specific questions regarding available treatment options.

Questions Your Doctor May Ask

Your doctor may also have several questions to ask in order to determine best treatment options. Prepare for these in advance of your appointment. You may even find it helpful to write down your answer so that you don’t forget any details.

Some questions your doctor may ask:

  • How often do you have menstrual periods?
  • Have you experienced a complete stop of periods?
  • How long have you had symptoms?
  • Are you currently sexually active?
  • Is there a possibility that you may be pregnant?
  • Have you had any surgery on your abdominal or pelvic area?
  • Have you ever sustained a head injury or any other type trauma to your central nervous system?
  • Do you have any family members who have had amenorrhea?
  • Have you undergone a great deal of stress since symptoms began?
  • Has there been any unexplained fluctuation in weight (weight gain or weight loss)?
  • How often do you exercise and how intense is your workout routine?
  • What medications or supplements are you currently taking?

During your appointment, do not hesitate to ask the doctor to clear up anything you do not understand. Knowing why any tests or treatments are recommended is important.

Colon Cancer Treatments – The Three Most Common Procedures

If you have been diagnosed with colon cancer, then your next step is to think about treatment. Treatment options vary and will be determined by the stage of colon cancer and the location of the cancer. Your oncologist will be able to give you the best advice on which treatment option is right for you. This article is going to explain three of the most common treatments for colon cancer. Keep reading to gain a valuable education.

Surgery is a Standard Treatment for Colon Cancer

Surgery to remove all sections of the bowel that has been affected by cancer is a common treatment in all stages of colon cancer. There are three types of surgery that can be used to remove the cancer. They are:

  1. Local excision. This is reserved for cancer that is found in the early stages. The doctor will simply insert a tube into your rectum and advance it into the colon. He will then be able to cut away the cancerous part of the colon. If a polyp is involved, he can remove the polyp this way also. This is a fairly simple surgery and requires no incision.
  2. Resection. This is used if the cancer in the colon has become quite large. The surgeon will make an incision into the abdomen and remove part of the colon that is affected by the cancer. He will also remove small sections of healthy tissue that surrounds the diseased section of the bowel. Lymph nodes near the colon may be removed so they can be examined to determine if the cancer has spread. The surgeon will then sew the two healthy ends of the bowel together.
  3. Resection and colostomy. Depending on the what part of the colon is affected and how much of the colon is involved, the surgeon may be unable to sew the healthy ends back together. In that case, one end of the bowel will be brought through a hole that is made in the abdomen. This is called a stoma. The patient will then need to wear bag over the stoma because the waste is now being expelled through the stoma. This is called a colostomy. Many people are able to lead normal lives after a colostomy.

Radiation to Treat Colon Cancer

Radiation can be high energy x-rays or other forms of radiation that is used to kill off cancer cells or to keep them from growing. Radiation may be given externally or it may be given internally through needles, seeds or catheters that are placed near the cancer. The way radiation is used is determined by the location and the size of the cancer.

Chemotherapy Treatment for Colon Cancer

Chemotherapy drugs can be used to kill cancer cells or to stop them from spreading. Chemotherapy can be injected through the vein or ingested through the mouth in the form of pills. It can also be injected directly into the area that is affected by the cancer such as the abdomen or the spine.

All of these treatments may be used alone or in combination with each other. A lot of patients that have surgery to remove part of the diseased colon will have chemotherapy or radiation to kill of any traveling cancer cells.

Colon cancer can be cured if caught early enough and contained. Stay in tune to your body and get regular check ups.

Whilst every opportunity has been take to ensure that all information is correct and up to date at time of writing, it is not meant to be used to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please always consult your doctor or health care specialist if you are in any way concerned about your health.

Tips and Treatments For Sebaceous Cysts Causing Hair Loss

The issue of sebaceous cysts causing hair loss has not been entirely understood by many people. A sebaceous cyst is a closed sac below the surface of the skin with a lining that is similar to the uppermost part of a hair follicle and fills with a fatty white of thick fluid material known as sebum. Sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands. They are more common in hairier areas, where in cases of long duration, they could result in hair loss on the skin surface immediately above the cyst.

Sebaceous glands occur most commonly in the scalp but may also occur in ears, back, face, and elsewhere in the body except the palms of the hands and the soles of the fit. In cases of long duration, they could result in hair loss on the skin surface immediately above the cyst. They are round in shape, smooth to touch, and greatly vary in size. The sebaceous cysts consist of:

· Fibrous tissues and fluids.

· A fatty substance.

· A viscous fluid.

The cyst can be removed entirely with careful surgery. When the cyst is removed carefully, it is likely not to re-occur again.

The main cause of sebaceous glands is the blockage of the swollen hair follicles and excessive testosterone production. It may also be hereditary.

Though sebaceous cysts generally do not require any medical treatment, if they continue to grow, they may become painful and infected. In this case, a surgical procedure should be performed. The common surgical procedure is to numb the cyst with an anesthetic and then using a scalpel to open the lesion with either a single cut down to the middle of the swelling. A smaller cyst may be laced instead of a surgical procedure being performed on it. The person performing the surgery will usually squeeze out the semi solid material surrounding the cyst and then use an instrument to hold the incision wide open while using the fingers to remove the cyst intact. An antibiotic is required in order to halt bacterial infection.

An equally easy technique of treating cysts is to place a heating pad directly on the cyst for about 15-20 minutes, twice daily, for about ten days. The heating pad must be sterilized to halt any infection of the treated area. This method mainly works by bringing the wax-like material inside of the cyst to a temperature to which it can melt and hence can be reabsorbed by the body as a small amount of oily fluid. This method is preferred by many because surgical procedures are thought to be inherently risky by many people.

As can be seen from the above procedures, both the non-surgical surgical procedures are easy to adopt. The non-surgical procedure is preferred if you don’t have the money for a normal surgery. It however exposes you to the risk of getting an infection especially if hygiene conditions are not observed. The surgical procedure is preferred by people who have some resources to spare. It can be done at any hospital. Given some people’s phobia for surgery procedures, some are bound to avoid it. However, regardless of the method you choose, you should treat the sebaceous condition as fast as possible because failure to treat it could result in considerable loss of your hair.

Thrush in Infants

Caring for a new baby is a rewarding although sometimes nerve-wracking job. From spending half the night in a rocking chair to obsessing over diaper contents to freaking out over any sign of a health problem in your baby, being a parent to an infant is not for the weak. One potential health issue that may rear its ugly head and disturb caregivers is infant thrush.

What are the symptoms of infant thrush?

Oral thrush, otherwise known as an oral yeast infection, is usually first noticed in infants as something that looks like milk in the mouth that will not go away. These are curd-like patches on the surface of the baby’s tongue or other areas of the mouth; they cannot be easily washed or wiped away. Often the tissue surrounding the white patches is red and irritated.

Although it may alarm a parent to see this in their child’s mouth, thrush in infants is quite common and is typically easy to treat. A doctor will often prescribe a medication especially for the infant, such as Diflucan. A baby who has thrush may also experience a diaper rash, so the doctor may prescribe something for the rash as well.

What causes infant thrush?

The oral yeast infection known as thrush develops when a bacteria called candida overgrows and becomes a detriment to the body. Although candida is normally a helpful and useful yeast found in the intestines, it can overgrow in the infant system, because babies’ immune systems have not developed enough to control the yeast overgrowth.

Mothers who take antibiotics during the pregnancy or following the birth may be more likely to experience thrush in their own bodies and in their babies. Because the good bacteria in the intestine is killed by the antibiotic, the yeast is allowed to overgrow in the mother and baby’s systems.

Furthermore, a new mother can pass the antibiotic to the baby through the breast milk, in turn affecting the baby’s immune system. A breastfeeding mother may notice thrush symptoms on her breasts and nipples, such as redness, swelling, or pain while breastfeeding.

If your new baby is experiencing thrush symptoms, there is no need to panic. Although no parent wants any discomfort or illness for his or her baby, this common infant oral yeast infection will likely be gone in no time once you receive the attention of your physician and receive the appropriate treatments.

The Hepatitis Virus A-B-C Explained

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver and there are three main categories of infective hepatitis namely, A, B and C.

Hepatitis A

One of the mildest categories of hepatitis, hepatitis A is usually contracted from food or drink which has been contaminated. The condition has an incubation period of between two and six weeks and symptoms will take the form of a flu like illness along with tiredness and a jaundiced yellow appearance to the skin. The majority of individuals who contract hepatitis will recover without requiring any specific treatments however, adults with the condition should avoid alcohol consumption along with the oral contraceptive pill until such time as your blood tests provide the evidence that your liver has returned to normal levels. Thankfully, the virus is a relatively rare condition thanks to vaccinations. If you’re looking to travel to any high-risk area you should first consult your doctor who may be able to administer the vaccine. When you are travelling to foreign lands insure that you wash fruit and salad leaves in boiled or bottled water.

Hepatitis B

A much more serious condition which is transmitted through blood contact or sexual intercourse. The virus itself can survive on services exterior to the body for around a week and the incubation period of hepatitis B is around 3 to 6 months. This means that you can have the condition for a considerable period before it being identified thereby making it easier to transmit the disease without knowing it. A far more serious condition than hepatitis A, hepatitis B can lead to chronic infections along with the risk of developing cirrhosis. Along with hepatitis a B, a virus is also available in a vaccine.

Hepatitis C

This virus is transported throughout our bodies using our blood as the carrier. The majority of individuals who suffer with hepatitis C do not show any symptoms and around 25% of people carrying the virus will be able to have it cleared from their systems without experiencing any long-term issues. If left untreated however there was a 20% chance of developing cirrhosis therefore if you believe you have the virus, then it is imperative that you consult your doctor or medical practitioner to receive the appropriate treatment.

Stagnant Liver Qi – The Cause of Many Eye Problems

Do you have a blockage in your liver qi?

Disharmony in our health can often be traced back to stuck liver blood and qi . Qi is the vital energy or life force that circulates in all our bodies. When qi becomes stuck due to negative emotions, trauma, cold or parasites, the result is that there is a snowballing effect throughout the body. Other organs which rely on the smooth flow of liver qi, such as the heart, lungs, stomach and spleen will suffer and their functions will be diminished.

The function of the liver is to store blood; harmonize the emotions and control the ascending, descending, and harmony of bodily qi. In particular, the eyes, tendons and the nails depend on the nourishment of liver blood. Disharmony in these areas is usually a tell tale sign that something is amiss with the liver.Eye disorders caused by insufficient liver blood are dryness of the eyes, floaters, blurred vision and night blindness. The liver and the eyes are closely related. In fact, it is said that the eyes are the external orifice of the liver.

As previously stated, negative emotions can damage qi. The emotion that is most damaging to liver qi is anger. When anger damages liver qi the result is self perpetuating. An imbalance in the liver causes the liver to generate more anger. Hence it is probably fair to say that a person prone to anger has stuck liver qi.I know someone who said that she became so angry once that she went temporarily blind. This would be because the anger so blocked the liver qi that it stopped blood flowing to her eyes. Also, when qi is constricted in the liver, the liver heats up like a compost heap. This causes a whole host of problems as toxic heat from the liver rises upwards. When liver qi is stagnant it creates heat which rises up to the eyes. The result of rising liver heat is red eyes, swollen eyes, conjunctivitis, dizziness, headaches, outbursts of anger, depression, pain in the neck and shoulders and insomnia. Wind stirs up the liver qi and an acupuncturist will often see problems caused by wind attack after a windy day. I once had a patient who was suffering from a serious pain to the right side of his back. Ten sessions of physiotherapy had failed to relieve the pain. He told me that the pain had struck the day after he had played golf on a very windy day. I treated his liver with acupuncture and when he returned the next week he said that the pain had disappeared straight after the treatment.

Right sided shoulder and back pain are frequently caused by liver imbalance. Hence, massage provides only short term relief as it is necessary to treat the liver directly to bring about a cure. The above are just some of the ways that imbalances in the body can be related back to liver qi disharmony.

Cure Morning Sickness – The Ways to Keep the Vomiting Away!

Are you scared that if you get pregnant you will have to go through all the sicknesses that seem to be normal and acceptable to many women that live in the United States? Maybe you are already pregnant and you are scared that the sickness is not far behind. There are ways to cure morning sickness that you should know about so that your pregnancy is better. Here are some of the ways to make your sickness better.

First, if you want to get to know how to keep from getting sick you need to know what causes your body to vomit and to get sick. If you know what causes this you can figure out a way to prevent it. Your body gets sick and vomits because there is something in it that it does not want or need. This is also why you get sick when you drink too much alcohol or eat a food that is bad for you.

Second, since you now know what causes your sickness we can start coming up with a way to cure morning sickness. You can start with your prenatal vitamins. Since these are very important and your baby needs them as bad as you do your body will not vomit when they are in your system. This means if you know that you normally get sick soon after you wake up, then you need to take your prenatal vitamin right away when you wake up. This is one of the possible ways to cure morning sickness.

Last, you can also use the same type of trick with your diet. If you are putting nutrients into your body that you need and you are giving your body the opportunity to receive things it and the baby needs, then there are less possibilities that your body will want to vomit. It does not want to get rid of what you and the baby need so if you eat healthy you can lessen the effects of the sickness.

Avoid the Risks of Food Poisoning

If you have ever experienced food poisoning, for sure you are very careful what you put in your mouth. There are a few nasties that can take down even the strongest of humans. The most common bacteria that causes food poisoning are:

  • Salmonella (from raw eggs, poultry and vegetables that have been contaminated)
  • Staphylococcus aureus (commonly exists in the nose and can be spread on hands)
  • Campylobacter jejuni (from poultry, beef, unpasteurized milk, insects and untreated water)
  • E-coli (from meat or vegetables that have come in contact with the baterium)
  • Clostridium botulinum (bacteria that causes botulism usually from home-canned foods, especially beans and tomatoes)

It May Not Be Your Last Meal

Usually when a person gets food poisoning, they immediately think it is from the last meal that they ate. However, bacteria sometimes take quite a while to multiply enough to make you sick, and some people are more resistant to them. It may be two to three days from eating contaminated food until you start having symptoms.

However, if there is already a lot of bacteria in a food when you eat it, the stomach may react with vomiting to try to remove the poison within a short time.

Take these precautions when fixing food

  • Be sure to wash your hands, utensils and cooking surfaces often. Use warm, soapy water to wash your hands before and after handling or preparing food. Use hot, soapy water to wash the utensils, surfaces including the cutting boards and sink.
  • Safety starts even when you are shopping. Always be sure to keep raw meats separated from fresh fruits or vegetables. This will prevent cross contamination.
  • Make sure you refrigerate or freeze food that you have purchased within two hours. If the temperature is above 90 degrees within one hour. Leftover food should be refrigerated as soon as possible and used within two days. If you are in doubt, throw it out!!
  • Defrost food properly. You can run cold water over the food to thaw it, thaw it in the refrigerator or defrost in the microwave at 50 percent. Do not thaw at room temperature.
  • Be sure to cook the food to a high enough temperature (between 145 F – 165 F). Purchase a food thermometer to be sure.
  • Do not eat uncooked hotdogs, lunch or deli meat
  • Wash off all sprouts (bean, alfalfa, radish and clover)
  • Do not eat raw cookie dough, cake batter, or anything with raw eggs.

Food poisoning can be life threatening to those with weakened immune systems. This could include the elderly, young children, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses.

Cooking with raw eggs

The US Food and Drug Administration recently ruled (2009) that those who sell eggs take certain precautionary steps during the production, storage and transport to prevent salmonella poisoning. Make sure the eggs you purchase have been Graded (preferably Grade A) pasteurized and have no cracks or other deformities. Bacteria can enter the egg with a crack even if it has been graded as okay.

Salmonella poisoning can make you very sick. It can cause long-term disabling conditions and even be fatal. Chronic arthritis, kidney failure, paralysis, seizures and mental disabilities have been connected to this toxic poisoning.

Certain foods, like mayonnaise and Hollandaise sauce are made with raw eggs. It is important that you refrigerate them and avoid eating leftover foods using these products.

  • Keep hydrated
  • Rest
