Complications of Diabetes – Vision

Sometimes we just take it for granted when we have an instance of blurred vision. Being very busy as we are, we tend to dismiss such episode as maybe due to eye strain arising from spending too much time in front of the television or the computer. For adults, one should not rule out the emergence of diabetes when confronted with this episode. Diabetes is a very common but grave metabolic disorder that people generally take very lightly.

Many people who take diabetes lightly are not aware of the complications that diabetes can cause to a person. If you study carefully the complications, you will find that damage to the blood vessel is the main starting point for the complications. As the complications involve various important organs, people tend to equate these with the specific organs but actually it mainly involves the blood vessel. If diabetes is not properly controlled, gradually it will damage the eyes, kidneys, heart and the limbs. Aside the damage to the blood vessels, diabetes can also cause havoc to the nerves.

The diabetic complication that involves vision initially presents itself as blurred vision. This is a critical stage because the high blood sugar levels will cause the fluid to be drawn out from the eye cells. When this happens, the lenses will be affected and thus vision becomes blurred.

With further attack by diabetes, the blood vessels nourishing the retina becomes affected. When you have a long-term damage to these blood vessels, diabetic retinopathy develops resulting in blindness. In such cases about 2% of the people inflicted become blind after 15 years of diabetes while about 10% of these diabetics live with severe visual impairment.

It is thus very critical for everyone to be aware of the complications of diabetes, and an early detection and control of this metabolic disorder will save lives.

Lip Sore From the Sun

Summer time comes, and the last thing you will expect is that you will get a lip sore from the sun. The hard truth is, there is a great risk from getting a sore in your lip due to sun exposure. If you do not take heed early on, you might only ruin the good days of summer. So start putting a good lip balm with sun protection to avoid sunburn on rather fun-filled days.

Ways to Relieve Sun Lip Sore

Blisters can occur after long-hours of being exposed to the sun. They are painful, especially when they are on your lips. Worse, the blisters can get shoddier because people have this tendency to always use the mouth. Therefore, your first order of business is to find ways to relieve lip sore from too much sun exposure.

Taking acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen can promise great pain reduction. They can lessen discomfort too. You can also resort to cooling gels, especially those that come with aloe vera, antihistamines, and corticosteroids because of their great soothing effect.

Stop yourself from further irritating your lips by limiting sun exposures until the blisters go away. Stay inside a dry and cool place to prevent irritants from coming in contact with your blisters.

Remedies to Treat Lip Blisters Away

The moment when you were able to stop the pain that comes with your lip sores, the next thing to do is to follow some home remedies to heal the problem. While the blister can heal on its own, you can still help in the process.

If you got small blisters, never pop them since this will never help in the healing process. The skin surrounding your lips are highly sensitive so pricking or draining large blisters will not help at all. It is wise to keep the skin covering the blister to remain intact; this will prevent infection from taking place.

It is important to clean the blisters at a regular basis. You can also apply antibiotic ointment to prevent the spread of infection and to heal the blisters faster. Ensuring the cleanliness of the blisters is highly important, especially since you cannot cover your lips with a bandage.

The thing is, although home remedies to treat lip sores are equally important, some may cause more harm than helping. Therefore, you must avoid using petroleum-based products and lotions with lidocaine.

Dealing with lip sore because of too much sun exposure is a great worry. However, they do come and go. Therefore, the best thing for you to do is to prevent yourself from getting one by applying lip balm with sun protection regularly.

The Best Treatment For Nail Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a terrible condition and people with this condition often have psoriasis in their nails. If this is you, you are probably wondering what is the best treatment for nail psoriasis? The good news is that there are a wide variety of treatment methods available today and many of them are extremely helpful in treating this terrible condition.

It is estimated that almost half of everyone who suffers with psoriasis will also have psoriasis in their nails. Nail psoriasis is not a life-threatening condition, but it can severely impact your quality of life. Nail psoriasis actually affects the bed of your nails which can cause a lot of pain and embarrassment. It can even cause your nails to separate from the nail bed and fall off. This is why so many people are looking for an effective treatment for nail psoriasis.

One of the first things most people try in treating this condition is to use one of the many over-the-counter creams for psoriasis. It is a good idea to use a cream that contains vitamin D and it. Vitamin D ointments are very easy to get and they will provide you with a great deal of relief. You should rub the vitamin D ointment at the bed of your nail 2 to 3 times a day, for approximately 5 minuets.

Another great way to help relieve the symptoms of this condition is to soak your affected nails in warm water. Soaking your fingers or toes for about a half an hour in warm water will soften the nails, the nail beds, and the surrounding skin. This will also greatly improve the penetration of any topical ointments you are currently using.

One of the most effective over-the-counter treatment for nail psoriasis is to use coal tar bath oil. This is an effective, and easy to use treatment method. All you need to do is get a tray of warm water and put three cap-fulls of coal tar oil in it. Then you simply need to soak your infected nails for about a half an hour in this solution. After you have done this, trim your nails and then apply some moisturizer to each of the nails.

The final treatment method for psoriasis of the nails you should consider is called phototherapy. Phototherapy uses ultraviolet lights to treat your psoriasis. These specially designed UVA lights will slow down your skin’s excessive cell production and can greatly improve your condition. Phototherapy is one of the best treatments around, but it can be a little expensive. Also, you will have to go for many sessions to achieve the results you want.

These are some of the more popular and most effective ways people have successfully treated this condition. However, you need to understand that successfully treating psoriasis in your nails will take time, dedication, and patients. In other words, don’t expect your nails to clear up overnight. The best treatment for nail psoriasis is going to take some time for it to successfully heal your condition, but it’s well worth the effort to cure your nail psoriasis.

Yellow, White, Black Toenail Fungus – The Different Types of Onychomycosis

Among the known toenail diseases, toenail fungus which is scientifically known as onychomycosis which can come in the form of either yellow, white or black toenail fungus, is probably one of the most dreaded primarily because of its embarrassing appearance and the foul odor that accompanies it. But what most people do not know is that this disease is more than just a cosmetic problem. It is a disease that can disrupt normal day-to-day activities because of the pain and discomfort that it brings. In fact, people suffering from onychomycosis find it hard to perform normal human activities that require the use of the toes such as walking or running.

Toenail fungus is caused by a type of fungus known as dermatophytes which can be found in warm and damp places such as public showrooms and swimming pool grounds. Exposure to dermatophytes is not enough though for a person to acquire toenail fungus. If you are relatively healthy and your immune system is working well, then your body can probably resist an attack of dermatophytes.

Still, the best defense against toenail fungus is proper hygiene which is often neglected especially by men. Some people are more prone to dermatophytes infection and therefore, should be extra careful when going to public places where dermatophytes are believed to be abundant. These people include those above 60 years of age and those with diabetes, psoriasis and leukemia.

There are several types of toenail fungus and they differ in appearance as well as on severity. The basic types of toenail fungus are:

Distal Subungual Onychomycosis – This type of nail fungus is characterized by an infection that occurs in between the tip of the nail and the skin and along the side of the nail. People with this type of toenail fungus has nails that are yellow in color.

White Superficial Onychomycosis – This type of toenail fungus is called as such because it is characterized by white and powdery specs on the surface of the nails. Apart from the discoloration, the afflicted nails also become flaky and brittle. This type of toenail infection is the most curable among all types of toenail fungus.

Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis – This is the rarest type of toenail fungus. It is characterized by a white or yellow spots on the the cuticle then spreads. This type of toenail fungus is also highly curable.

Black Toenail Fungus – As the name suggest, this type of onychomycosis by the toenail turning black in color.

Through good hygiene, you can prevent getting yellow, white or black toenail fungus

Are You Allergic To Fruits And Vegetables?

Most people with pollen allergy are also allergic to fruits and vegetables. Often without knowing it. This is known as cross allergy. Prior to the pollen season here are some good advice.

Cross allergy to hazelnuts, apple, peach, cherry, walnut, pear, almond, plum, carrot, tomato, peanuts, strawberries and apricots are common in people with birch pollen allergy. Approximately 70% of birch pollen allergic also have allergic reactions to one or more of these foods. A pollen allergic react to these foods because they contain substances similar to the allergy-causing substances, the allergens, in birch pollen.

Local symptoms from mouth and throat with itching and swelling of the mucous membranes are the most common allergic reactions to fruits and vegetables. But sneezing, skin rashes, asthma and allergic symptoms that spread to other organs also occurs. In worst cases an allergic shock may occur – this is most common with allergies to hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds and peanuts.

The more severe pollen allergy, the greater are usually the problems with cross-allergy to nuts, fruits and vegetables. Significant allergic reactions to these foods is an indication of a more severe pollen allergy. The greater number of foods a pollen allergic reacts to, the more likely it is that it is allergy to birch pollen and other pollen types the allergic reacts to. A German study shows that 90% of patients with allergy to fruits and vegetables also had pollen allergy.

It is important for a pollen allergic to avoid eating these foods during the pollen season, as it will reduce symptoms of pollen allergy. Eating pollen allergy foods you react to when you are also exposed to pollen, increases the pain dramatically. Most people cannot tolerate raw vegetables or fruit, but can eat apples or carrots if they are boiled, or lightly heat-treated in microwave oven. An apple which is peeled is tolerated better than an apple with the peel on.

Birch pollen allergy

The more severe the birch pollen allergy is, the greater the symptoms of allergy to fruits and vegetables will be. It is important to avoid these foods immediately before and throughout the birch pollen season, as it will reduce allergy symptoms. The most common cross allergies with birch pollen allergy are hazelnuts, apple, peach, cherry, walnut, pear, almond, plum, Brazil nuts, potato peel, carrot, tomato, peanuts, strawberries and apricots. If you have a severe birch pollen allergy you will react to these foods also outside the pollen season. Fruits that you probably can tolerate is, among others, is pineapple which rarely sparks the birch pollen allergy and also berries such as cranberries, currants, raspberries and blueberries should be safe to eat.

Grass pollen allergy

There is a link between grass pollen and cross allergy to wheat, rye and other grains sales. Cross allergies to grain do not have to give so much pain, but you suffer from grass allergies and experience a variety of diffuse symptoms of fatigue, stomach discomfort, pain in muscles outside the grass pollen season – it may be wise to take a test period of about three weeks without these grain varieties to see if symptoms disappears or becomes significantly better. Many people with allergies towards grass pollen also reacts to tomato, peanuts, peas, soy sauce, onion and melon. But generally, cross-allergy to foods is less troublesome in grass pollen allergics than with birch pollen allergy.

Latex Allergies and exotic fruits

Allergies to latex, natural rubber has increased in recent decades. The increase has occurred particularly among health professionals who use disposable gloves made of latex. It’s proven cross-sensitization between latex and exotic fruits such as banana, avocado, kiwi, chestnut, nectarines and strawberries. If you react with itching in the mouth and throat and blocked nose when you eat a banana, kiwi, or avocado, it is likely that you are allergic to latex.

IBS – Natural Remedies For Irritable Bowel Syndrome

There are various ways you can reduce or even cure your IBS with natural remedies. Here are some things to try out to reduce the discomfort of irritable bowel syndrome.

1. Ditch the artificial sweeteners

Whilst this may not be classed as a traditional “remedy” it’s certainly worth doing. Artificial sweeteners are used all over and have been shown to cause gas and bloating. As you would expect, they are used in lots of diet products including soft drinks and other low calorie foods. But you need to check the ingredients list as they are also used in potato chips, toothpaste, mouth wash, chewing gum and a myriad of other products. Watch out for Sorbitol, Aspartame, Xylitol and other sugar substitutes. If there is no ingredients list, move on to the next product (if it’s your favorite product, check the manufacturer’s website for more information).

2. Eat more fiber

Especially soluble fiber. This will help your bowels to move more naturally which in turn should reduce their irritability. If you follow the current recommendations of eating more fruit and vegetables, you’ll be on your way. Just make sure that they have suffered little if any processing. This means eating real fruit, not drinking juice or smoothies. Ideally your vegetables should be steamed or oven cooked rather than deep fried. So that means cutting down on the french fries. Sorry!

3. Get more friendly bacteria

It’s not just an advertising gimmick. You can get probiotic drinks that you keep in the refrigerator and drink one a day. Or you can get a pot of Acidophilus from your local health food shop and keep that cool instead. Go for the highest strength available for maximum benefit.

4. Try peppermint tea

Peppermint has been used since ancient times to help with healing your digestive system. Brew a cup of peppermint tea instead of automatically reaching for coffee the next time you want a hot drink. It’s a refreshing drink as well as helping your digestion.

5. De-stress your life

Stress is one of the major causes of IBS. Whilst modern western life seems to breed stress, there are ways of at least reducing it and they are well worth exploring. Treat yourself to some “you” time. Put on a favorite song or listen to one of the many purpose made relaxation MP3s available. If you can spare the time, investigate taking a local yoga class. Or look into one of the newer meditation methods that do almost all the hard work of meditation for you, leaving you free to relax and enjoy the experience rather than concentrating on a candle or a mantra.

6. Cut down on the caffeine

Caffeine can be a contributor to your IBS. Trouble is, it’s quite an addictive drug. Which means that if you are used to drinking lots of coffee every day, you may need to reduce the amount you’re drinking over a week or two, rather than cut it out completely overnight. Decaffeinated coffee has improved and almost tastes the same as regular. Just be careful to check how the coffee you change to has its caffeine removed as the chemicals in some of the processes can add their own issues.

Facts About Social Phobia

Social phobia, also called social anxiety, is a disorder characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. People with social phobia have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and of being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions.

Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school–and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation.

Social phobia can be limited to only one type of situation–such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal situations, or eating or drinking in front of others–or, in its most severe form, may be so broad that a person experiences symptoms almost anytime they are around other people. Social phobia can be very debilitating–it may even keep people from going to work or school on some days. Many people with this illness have a hard time making and keeping friends.

Physical symptoms often accompany the intense anxiety of social phobia and include blushing, profuse sweating, trembling, and other symptoms of anxiety, including difficulty talking and nausea or other stomach discomfort. These visible symptoms heighten the fear of disapproval and the symptoms themselves can become an additional focus of fear.

Fear of symptoms can create a vicious cycle: as people with social phobia worry about experiencing the symptoms, the greater their chances of developing the symptoms. Social phobia often runs in families and may be accompanied by depression or alcohol dependence.

How Common Is Social Phobia?

About 3.7 percent of the U.S. population ages 18 to 54–approximately 5.3 million Americans–has social phobia in any given year. Social phobia occurs in women twice as often as in men, although a higher proportion of men seeks help for this disorder. The disorder typically begins in childhood or early adolescence and rarely develops after age 25.

What Causes Social Phobia?

Research to define causes of social phobia is ongoing. Some investigations implicate a small structure in the brain called the amygdala in the symptoms of social phobia. The amygdala is believed to be a central site in the brain that controls fear responses.

Animal studies are adding to the evidence that suggests social phobia can be inherited. In fact, researchers supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) recently identified the site of a gene in mice that affects learned fearfulness.

One line of research is investigating a biochemical basis for the disorder. Scientists are exploring the idea that heightened sensitivity to disapproval may be physiologically or hormonally based.

Other researchers are investigating the environment’s influence on the development of social phobia. People with social phobia may acquire their fear from observing the behavior and consequences of others, a process called observational learning or social modeling.

What Treatments Are Available for Social Phobia?

Research supported by NIMH and by industry has shown that there are two effective forms of treatment available for social phobia: certain medications and a specific form of short-term psychotherapy called cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Medications include antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), as well as drugs known as high-potency benzodiazepenes. Some people with a form of social phobia called performance phobia have been helped by beta-blockers, which are more commonly used to control high blood pressure.

Cognitive-behavior therapy is also very useful in treating social phobia. The central component of this treatment is exposure therapy, which involves helping patients gradually become more comfortable with situations that frighten them. The exposure process often involves three stages. The first involves introducing people to the feared situation.

The second level is to increase the risk for disapproval in that situation so people build confidence that they can handle rejection or criticism.

The third stage involves teaching people techniques to cope with disapproval. In this stage, people imagine their worst fear and are encouraged to develop constructive responses to their fear and perceived disapproval.

Cognitive-behavior therapy for social phobia also includes anxiety management training–for example, teaching people techniques such as deep breathing to control their levels of anxiety. Another important aspect of treatment is called cognitive restructuring, which involves helping individuals identify their misjudgments and develop more realistic expectations of the likelihood of danger in social situations.

Supportive therapy such as group therapy, or couples or family therapy to educate significant others about the disorder, is also helpful. Sometimes people with social phobia also benefit from social skills training.

What Other Illnesses Co-Occur With Social Phobia?

Social phobia can cause lowered self-esteem and depression. To try to reduce their anxiety and alleviate depression, people with social phobia may use alcohol or other drugs, which can lead to addiction. Some people with social phobia may also have other anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Anxiety Self Help – How Can You Treat Yourself

People with anxiety and panic attacks are somewhat hesitant to seek professional help when they suffer from these symptoms. Some may feel awkward about discussing it to people they don’t even know. Others become more stressed out just thinking about getting medication. Thus, anxiety self help is the first therapy to consider when having panic attacks. Here are some ideas on how you can treat your anxiety attacks without visiting a Doctor. Reduce Physical Symptoms

The moment you notice some physical changes in your body especially when you feel anxious, immediately take deep breaths. But try not to overdo it because studies show that over-breathing may imbalance the oxygen and carbon dioxide in your body. When this happens, you feel dizzy and you begin to palpitate, thus putting you at risk for another panic attack.

When you breathe, make sure you are seated straight and your shoulders are relaxed. Place one hand on your stomach and the other one on your chest. Take deep and slow breaths through the nose for about four seconds and hold it for two seconds. Slowly exhale Negative Thoughts through your mouth, exhaling as much air out as you can.

Challenge your negative thoughts

People who suffer from anxiety attacks especially those who have social anxiety syndrome are pessimistic in nature. They tend to look at things negatively. To address this, the key is to challenge all your negative thoughts. You can start by identifying the causes that make you feel scared and overwhelmed in social situations.

Once you have identified the causes, you can then start analyzing how you can challenge those negative thoughts. Evaluate them logically to get more positive and realistic approaches to deal with your thoughts. Face Your Fears What better way to get over your fears than facing them head on!

This applies to those who have social phobias. Instead of avoiding certain social situations, why not take a closer step and find good reasons why you shouldn’t be scared in public in the first place. However, just remember to keep things in pace. Never rush yourself into moving too quickly and forcing things abruptly.

Learn to be patient as overcoming social phobias takes lots of practice and time. Furthermore, people with social anxiety concerns may join supportive social settings. Here, you can interact with other people who may also be suffering the same condition as you. There are also programs designed specifically to boost your social skills. You may also try some volunteer work where the environment is positive and you are appreciated.

The moment you feel like your anxiety is getting the best of you, don’t freak out. Just because you have these attacks doesn’t mean you can no longer function normally.

Although the best thing you can do is seek medical and professional help, there are still other alternative ways and one of them is anxiety self help. You can treat your anxiety panics by starting with yourself today.

Insomnia & Exhausted Adrenals – How Too Much Activity Before Bed Disrupts Sleep

If you are suffering from insomnia, exhausted adrenals may be to blame. And there is a good chance that you have suffered from exhausted adrenals at some point, since 80% of Americans adults are believed to be affected at some point. What are exhausted adrenals? Let me explain.

Since you were a kid, you have been warned to stay away from foods with stimulants in them, such as energy drinks, coffee and soft drinks. Basically anything with caffeine in it. But artificial stimulants are not the only thing that stimulate our brains. Being stressed out and in a hurry all the time can play a role too.

Many people stimulate their brains just before they head off to bed. They do this by watching television, answering email messages from family and friends, and searching the internet, just to name a few activities. All activities that stimulate the brain.

Insomnia used to not be as big of a problem during simpler times. There were not nearly the distractions, and people took sleep more seriously. But these days, we are bombarded with so much that we tend to neglect the rest our bodies need.

Your brain has two types of neurotransmitters, stimulatory and inhibitory. They are associated with insomnia and other problems like depression, anxiety, and weight loss. If you are going to get a good night’s sleep, the body needs to make enough inhibitory neurotransmitters to counteract the stimulatory neurotransmitters. So, an hour and a half before bed, you should be doing activities that help you unwind and relax.

Basic Toenail Care for Men

There are good reasons to care for your feet at all times. They are needed in good order each and every day. Having sore feet for any reason is never fun, and can be very restrictive. So care for the feet is important and does not take long if done regularly.

Clean toenails are essential for good healthy feet. Clean them regularly with a brush. Toenails usually do not get as dirty as fingernails, but nevertheless keep them clean with regular scrubbing.

Keep the toenails trimmed weekly using with toenail clippers or a pair of toenail scissors. Do not use a carving knife to trim your toenails, unless you have the skills and control, otherwise there will be blood! Take care to cut only the nail and trim the tips flat and use an emery board to file the sides to a comfortable length. Do not trim too deep – leave about one eight of an inch (or 3 mm) of nail. Check the toenails for any fungus because this may cause nails to become discolored, misshapen and ultimately painful. The cause is either from wearing poor fitting shoes or untreated athlete’s foot. Treat the fungus with a prescriptive treatment from your doctor. There are natural remedies available, and some work, but the best treatment is to avoid the fungus by making sure that all your shoes are of a correct fit.

Check toes for any other problems, like ingrown toenails and other dermatitis type skin irritations. See your doctor for ingrown toenails and get the correct treatment, because they can become very painful and make walking a chore. Hospitalization can result if left untreated for a long time. Skin irritations can usually be treated with ointment from a chemist or pharmacy – if the irritation persists, you know the drill, see the doctor!

Foot odor may be a problem in the summer months. Use a foot powder to control the smell – it is not a good thing for your friends and family. There are many available, During the colder times, feet may dry out and become rough. If this is a problem, use a pumice stone to rub the soles of the feet and apply a lotion if they are really troublesome.

Healthy foot care will make your partner happy!

The basic tools required for good toenail care can be found in most manicure sets. These sets are available from reputable health, chemist and pharmacy shops as well as online retailers. The better manicure set components are made from stainless steel.

Fungal infection of the toe nails and fingernails is typically caused by one of the fungi that belong to the group knows as dermatophytes. Mold and yeast can also sometimes be the cause of a toenail fungal infection. Each of these tiny organisms live and thrive in warm, moist environments, like showers and swimming pools.

These organisms are so microscopic that they can sneak in through nearly any opening in your skin, including an undetectable cut or a small gap between your nail and nail bed. While these fungi only multiply when they get the warmth and moisture they require to grow, your feet can provide exactly the environment the fungi need to thrive.

Risk factors for toenail fungus

Almost everyone comes into contact with the micro-organisms that cause fungal infections of the toenails. Why do some people get it and others don’t?

First, nail fungus is more common among older adults. As people age, they may have diminished blood circulation to bring the body’s immunity defenses to the toes, more years of exposure to the micro-organisms that cause the infection and nails which grow more slowly, making them more prone to infection. Studies also show that there are genetic factors involved. Finally, men are more likely than women to have toenail fungus.

Many of the contributing causes of toenail fungus are within your control, however.

These risk factors include:

  • Poor foot hygiene
  • Heavy foot perspiration
  • Footwear that retain moisture
  • Walking barefoot in places likes public showers and locker rooms
  • Cuts on your feet or damaged toenails
  • Diabetes, HIV or circulatory problems which hamper the immune system

Preventing toenail fungus

To lower your chances of getting toenail fungus, keep your feet clean and dry. Wash your feet often, and change your socks frequently. Rotate your shoes to give them a chance to dry thoroughly. Avoid footwear made of materials than don’t “breathe.”

Treat any minor skin injuries on your feet promptly and avoid exposure to likely breeding places when your feet are most prone to fungal infection. Wear shower shoes or other protective footwear in public places like swimming pools, locker rooms and public showers.

Toenail fungus is tough to wipe out, so your top aim should be prevention. But if you do see the tell-tale signs of fungus in your feet, seek a toenail fungus treatment early to get rid of the fungus before it becomes deeply rooted. One infected toenail can quickly infect others and your toenail infection can easily spread to the feet of family members.

Sprained Ankle Causes and Treatments

A twisted ankle is very painful. This is caused by the tearing of one or more ligaments in your feet. This is also known as a sprain.

There are three degrees of this kind of sprains. They are classified as 1, 2, or 3. To properly diagnose this, you need to see a physician. The doctor has to examine the injured joint to see the extent of the tearing on the ligament. It is important that a physician diagnose this so you could properly treat it as well.

You might be surprised that a sprained ankle would demand so much attention. There are a lot of people who brush off this condition as “just a sprain”. What most people do not know is that when a sprain is neglected, there is a bigger chance of it recurring. A neglected sprain also causes the joint to weaken as well.

A sprain happens when there is sudden movement or change in the direction of the movement is asserted on the joint. This can overstretch the ligaments that support the joint. When the ligaments are overstretched, they then tear and cause some bleeding. This often occurs during activities that involve jumping, running and frequent change in direction.

Recovering from a sprain can be pretty quick if you religiously follow doctor’s orders. Most people find it difficult to follow the doctor’s orders of immobilization. There is a treatment called RICE, which means acute rest, ice, compression and elevation, which is prescribed for sprains. And acute rest sometimes would entail complete immobilization of the joint. Complete immobilization also helps your foot recover faster than a tubular bandage, especially if the ligament is completely torn.

Ice also helps reduce the swelling. Put some ice on it for ten to fifteen minutes. Then take the ice off for another then to fifteen minutes after. If you ice the sprain too long, this may cause cold injuries.
