Most people think that we use protein to build strong muscles. The truth is that we use Amino acids to create the proteins we need to build strong muscles and every other part of the body. Our bodies have to break down the protein that we consume into its individual amino acids before we can use it. This process is supposed to happen in the digestive system. It has a hard time converting deranged protein into usable amino acids.

The best sources for amino acids, to build strong bodies, are vegetables and fruits. The lowly lettuce salad has more usable protein in the form of amino acids than a steak. Because most plant foods have the protein in the form we need the body has less work to do to digest the food.

Baked Chicken Breast

Since some peptic ulcers are agitated by fatty foods, it’s nearly an added benefit that most of the meals you will be preparing will be low or fat free. Baked chicken is always a savory and healthy choice.

Ingredients:

2 c. of diced cooked chicken breast

1/4 c. Parmesan cheese (fresh or pre-shredded)

1 large can of cream of celery soup

1 c. skimmed or 2% milk

1/2 c. low-fat shredded cheddar cheese

1 c. long-grain white rice (cooked)

Oil

Preparation:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Mix the milk, Parmesan cheese, and half of the cheddar cheese (1/4 cup). Add the chicken and celery soup. Mix in cooked rice. Coat the baking dish with oil and add the rice mixture. Top off with the remaining (1/4 cup) shredded cheese. Bake for 35 – 40 minutes.

Grilled Marinated Steak

You shouldn’t have to give up your “meat and potatoes” lifestyle altogether. So, here is a recipe that’s sure to satisfy the meat-lovers in your house without requiring anyone to “pay the price” later.

Ingredients:

4 lbs. of flank steak

1/4 c. vegetable or olive oil

1/2 c. light soy sauce

2 tbsp. brown sugar

Preparation:

Place the steak into a container large enough to marinade. Combine oil, light soy sauce, and brown sugar in a bowl and blend well. Pour mixture over the steak, making sure meat is completely coated. Cover marinade dish with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Light your grill-how else are you going to cook a steak? Remove the steak from the marinade and grill to appropriate temperature.

** When buying the streak remember to buy “lean” steak with a good bit of marbling and not a lot of fat. Ask your butcher or meat department stocker to help with this. Once you have explained your dietary requirements, they will be more than willing to help.**

Angel food Pudding

What’s dinner without dessert? Try BORING! Here is a nice combination of bread pudding and angel food cake. It might not be the absolute healthiest thing out there, but it’s not the worst either. And it doesn’t taste like cardboard.

Ingredients:

1 angel food cake

6 cups cold milk (or skim milk)

1 package instant chocolate pudding

1 package instant vanilla pudding

2 bars Butterfinger bars (crushed)-You can also use Chic-o-Stix candy if you wish to avoid more chocolate.

Preparation:

Cut the angel food cake into 1 x 1 inch squares and place at the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch dish. Prepare the chocolate and vanilla puddings in separate bowls according to directions. When they’re ready, pour the pudding over the cake cubes. Sprinkle on half of the crushed candy. Spread the rest of the cake cubes over candy and top with vanilla pudding. Sprinkle with remaining candy and chill until you’re ready to serve.

Having an ulcer doesn’t mean a strict diet of nothing but bland rice and broth. If you don’t take care of yourself, though, that could be where you’re heading. Listen to your body-particularly your stomach-and take it easy on the foods that affect you adversely.

Has anyone cured acid reflux? To find the answer to this one, I typed in the natural cure for acid reflux, and the answer according to many sources, is most definitely yes. There appear to be many cures for gastric reflux. These include Artemisia Asiatica or Wormwood, garlic, Vitamin U, yoghurt, acidophilus and other probiotics, amino acids and digestive enzymes, to name just a few natural cures for gerd, heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux.

A condition not a Disease

The problem with acid reflux/gerd is that its name suggests that it is a disease, which it is not. It is a condition, a very painful one and if it goes untreated, it can cause damage to the esophagus, but it does not require a cure in the normal sense of the word. Symptoms of this condition can include burping, bloating, regurgitation of food, bloating and heartburn after eating. Once you remove the cause of the symptoms, the condition is not so much of a problem.

Do You Know What Systemic Lupus Is?

The immune system is a mysterious mechanism. Like a pitbull, the immune system will guard against foreign attackers mercilessly to protect its home, and yet, it can also turn on its master, attacking it ferociously all the same. Doctors aren’t exactly sure what causes the autoimmune disease called systemic lupus, but they suspect it’s a murky concoction of factors.

So, you ask, what are the symptoms and signs of systemic lupus? In 5-10% of the patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, they develop red, bordered, non-itchy skin rashes on the face and scalp. This form of lupus is called “discoid lupus” and while painless, can cause permanent hair loss and scarring.

Half the patients with systemic lupus have a red “butterfly rash” across the bridge of their nose and experience extreme sensitivity to sunlight. Most patients experience arthritis in their hands, wrists and feet.

More serious inflammation of organs occurs in the brain, liver, and kidneys. White blood cells and blood clotting factors also can be decreased in SLE, thereby increasing the risk of infection and bleeding. Inflamed muscles, blood vessels, lungs, kidneys and other body parts can cause internal injuries resulting in chest pain, fluid retention, high blood pressure, kidney failure, loss of appetite, seizures, comas, personality changes, fatigue, fever, numbness, hair loss and Raynaud’s phenomenon (lack of blood supply and pain in the fingers and toes). The symptoms vary, depending on which part of the body is affected and the severity of the condition, of course.

Doctors can diagnose systemic lupus using eleven criteria established by the American Rheumatism Association. If a patient has four or more symptoms, then a diagnosis is strongly urged. Symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus are: malar (butterfly rash over the cheeks), discoid skin rash (patchy redness), photosensitivity (reaction to sunlight), mucus membrane ulcers (in the mouth, nose or throat), arthritis (swollen, tender joints), pleuritis/pericarditis (inflammation of the lungs/heart tissue), kidney abnormalities (excessive urine protein or cellular casts), brain irritation (seizures or psychosis), blood count abnormalities (low red or white blood cells), immunologic disorder (anti-DNA or abnormal activity) and antinuclear antibody (presence of ANA antibody). Blood tests, blood chemistry tests, body fluid tests and tissue biopsies can help uncover symptoms of lupus as well.

Treatment for systemic lupus is determined on an individual basis, depending on symptoms and inflammation levels. Patients with mild symptoms may not need treatment at all, but those with more serious symptoms may try medications that suppress the body’s immune system or decreases inflammation.

Many patients report difficulty sleeping, which can lead to depression, lethargy, random eating patterns and diminished coping abilities. Therefore, sleep aids are an important complementary treatment. Most recently, the 2007 national Rheumatology meeting said that an omega-3 fish oil supplement may decrease heart risks and diminish disease activity.

Eyelid Eczema

Eyelid Eczema is a problem characterized by scaling, erythema and edema associated with burning and pruritus caused by irritants and allergens in the atmosphere. This is because the skin near and around the eyes is thin and sensitive hence vulnerable to allergens and irritants. Nutrition has been much maligned in recent years due to the so called advances in cholesterol lowering medications. The most prominent of these are the statins which work by blocking the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme which is needed for the body to produce cholesterol. Because of their effectiveness it is my belief that a certain amount of complacency has crept into many medical professional. After all, why worry about something as arcane as nutrition when statin medications can lower cholesterol faster than a cowboy can say gettie up.

But what if there were other factors at work that contributed to heart disease besides cholesterol. What if I told you that there were over 15 studies linking a destructive amino acid called homocysteine to heart disease, and nutrition can play an important role in eliminating this risk.

No one would argue that managing cholesterol is an important piece of the puzzle but we might be looking at a disease which attacks our bodies on multiple fronts.

In order for cholesterol deposits to form in our arteries the surface of the arterial wall must be torn, damaged, or roughed up in some way otherwise dangerous LDL cholesterol would float right by and eventually be disposed of in the form of solid waste. What the latest studies suggest is that homocysteine amino acids chew up cells in the lining of your blood vessels creating a rough pitted surface conducive to triggering blood clots, and/or plaque deposits consisting of cholesterol, dead cells, and calcium.

The question as to how does nutrition affect heart disease is central to managing these harmful amino acids. There are currently three B vitamins which have been shown to reduce the risk of damage for homocysteines. They are folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. When taken together recent research suggests they work to protect and heal the lining of the arteries, thus minimizing the damage of these hazardous homocysteine amino acids. While this may be the case, researchers have yet to prove that lowering homocysteine levels alone can actually reduce the incidence of heart disease. Nevertheless, until this risk factor can be discounted it should not be ignored. Let’s take each one of these nutrients individually and see what foods contain high quantities of these B vitamins.

*Folic acid: beans, whole grain, fortified wheat flower, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and green leafy vegetables.

*Vitamin B6: Asparagus, bananas, beans, bok choy, cauliflower, grains, tuna, turkey, mustard greens, and turnip greens.

*Vitamin B12: Fish, milk, poultry, eggs, and red meat

As you can see B12 may prove to be the most problematic for those striving for a heart healthy nutrition due to the high cholesterol content in many of the best natural sources, with fish being the exception due to its high omega 3 fatty acid content. The good news is that B12 nutritional supplements are both affordable and readily available at your local supermarket or drugstore.

EKG Strips – Recording Heart Waves Through EKG Strips

Getting an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is standard treatment procedure for handling heart ailments. An electrocardiograph works to monitor your heart’s electrical activity and from the data printed out on the EKG strips, the doctor pinpoints distress signals such as abnormal rhythms caused by possible cardiac problems. How it works

These days, EKG readings can be recorded both through a computer and through EKG strips or graph paper. An ECG paper is composed of small blocks that measures 1 mm2. With an EKG graph paper, it’s easier to diagnose heart problems and identify their causes. While it is not capable of reading the pumping ability of the heart, the ECG is still considered one of the most important medical inventions to date.

Heart Disease and Stroke – Are the Risk Factors the Same?

Heart disease is a term compiling a variety of heart related problems. Either way, the reason why your betta’s eyes are protruding is because there is likely an abscess behind the eye.

How to Treat Popeye in Betta Fish

If the cause of Popeye is a mycobacterial infection, you should go ahead and first treat the root of the bacteria itself. This is easily done by cleaning the tank water and ensuring that the pH balance of the water is just slightly acidic. On a side note, nearly all bacterial infections found in bettas and other fish that are pets can be prevented or in the very least you can reduce the risk of them by doing keeping the water clean and monitoring the pH balance.

Additionally, you can treat the water with Tetracycline or Terramycin, two very popular antibacterial medications that you can purchase at your local pet store. The standard is to add this in the water…100 mg of the antibiotic for every 4 oz. of food.

If this doesn’t work, you can try these other methods for a quick fix that also work well as a preventative measure for your betta…

  • Warm the water to 86 degrees. You will want to do this gradually at a rate of 1 degree per hour. The water temperature should already be in the high 70 degree range.
  • Add a little salt to the water- The key is “little”. Don’t give your betta fish a salt bath. The percentage of salt added to the water should be no higher than .6%

Both of these quick fixes will help to keep bacterial infections at bay. It is important to note that if your fix is exhibiting signs of Popeye, you should avoid contact. Although it is unlikely your betta has tuberculosis, it is transmissible to humans through open sores.

In conclusion, Popeye is treatable and like most bacterial infections, the cause is normally dirty water or a low pH. The best way to prevent Popeye is to make sure your betta fish is in a stress free environment. That means clean water, good food, and nice warm water.

After Your Hair Sheds Or Falls Out, How Long Does it Take it to Start Growing Back?

I’m asked this question quite a bit. After going through the trauma of seeing shedding hair all over your clothing and home, many people are more than ready to begin regrowing their hair and to have this process finished and over. People want to know when they should starting looking for small signs of regrowth. Many people will look, see nothing, and worry that their hair just isn’t going to grow back. Knowing the correct time frame will help you to determine if everything is happening as it should. I will discuss this more in the following article.

Typical Hair Regrowth Rates: Sometimes people confess to me that they think hair that has shed out or been involved with telogen effluvium (TE) regrows differently than hair that comes out as part of a normal follicle cycle. This really isn’t entirely accurate. Once a hair comes out of the follicle, it generally then reverts back to the growing phrase (so long as there is not some autoimmune or androgen mechanism taking place as in disorders like alopecia areata or AGA where the follicle is being attacked or compromised.) So, once the shaft is forced out of your scalp and falls out, then the follicle will begin it’s regrowth phase and this process happens quite rapidly.

However, what’s not so rapid or fast is human hair regrowth rates. For most people, this is about 1/2 a millimeter per day so that over a month’s time, you’re looking at about 1/2 inch or regrowth. A good rule of thumb is that most people should start seeing decent levels of regrowth at around 2 – 3 months after the worst shedding took place. Some people see this earlier and some see this later, but 1/2 inch per month is considered typical or average.

If you’re not seeing any new hairs coming in, try spraying some dry shampoo right at the top of your head by the part line (or any other area where you’ve been particularly hard hit.) This will coat your strands and should make those new regrowth strands that are just coming in stand out from the rest. Yes, these hairs will be quite short, but if you give them a little time, eventually they will begin to fill in and to give you some volume. In about six months to a year, your hair should resume a normal appearance.

Another thing to try to see the new hairs is to pull your hair straight back or to comb it forward or against the grain. This will make those new little hairs stand up where you should be able to see them. So what happens if you’re not seeing anything? You may have somewhat slower grow rates. Recheck every week. Hopefully, in the next few weeks you should begin to see some little sprouts coming in. If you don’t, you may want to consider that perhaps your hair loss was caused by something other than TE or common shedding.

Because in TE or seasonal shedding, the follicle is just being reset into the shedding phrase, but nothing has happened to damage it. There are other causes of hair loss (like androgenic alopecia or AGA) that will compromise regrowth. Another potential indication that something else might be going on is seeing miniaturized or very fine or flyaway regrowth that is coming in, but not really providing any volume or coverage.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (Stage 2) – Symptoms, Diagnosis, Stages and Treatment

Symptoms

Stage 2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) may be present in a sufferer for many years before it is eventually discovered. Common symptoms of the disease are a persistent cough (smoker’s cough), hemoptysis (coughing up blood [origin from the lungs or bronchial tubes]), shortness of breath, wheezing, back pains, chest pains, and recurrent bronchitis or pneumonia.

Other symptoms such as weight loss and fatigue are less common at this early stage, and are more likely to show at a later stage as the tumor has metastasized (spread) beyond the lungs.

Diagnosis

Stage 2 NSCLC means that the tumor is no longer localized just within the lungs, but that it has spread to the nearby lymph nodes.

Stages

– 1 The cancer has spread to the nearby lymph nodes.

– 1A (the tumor is 3 cm or less in diameter but has spread to the nearby lymph nodes).

– 1B (the tumor is larger than 3 cm in diameter, has spread to the nearby nymph nodes, and is either present in a location near to the bronchus, or the lining of the lungs).

These stages may also be described with a system called TNM (T = tumor size, N = nodes, and M = metastasis [spread of cancer]). Example:

– 1A (T1N0M0) Meaning that the tumor is less than 3 cm (T1), with spread to the nodes (N1), and no metastasis (M0).

– 1B (T2N1M0) Meaning that the tumor is greater than 3 cm (T2), with spread to the nodes (N1), and no metastasis (M0).

– 1B (T3N0M0) Meaning that the tumor is greater than 3 cm (T3), with no nodes (N0), and no metastasis (M0), but has spread to nearby areas such as the wall of the chest, or the diaphragm.

Treatment

Surgery is usually considered as the primary option for the treatment of Stage 2 lung cancer, where removal of the tumor may be done via several different techniques depending on exactly where the tumor is located. Adjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy used after surgery to kill off any remaining cancerous cells) is usually recommended by doctors at this stage.

If the lung cancer is inoperable (the tumor is in a difficult position to get at, or the patient is unable to undergo traditional surgery due to general health concerns), then radiation therapy may be considered. Radiation therapy’s are considered by many doctors as being less intrusive on a patient than traditional surgery.

What is the Difference Between Bubonic and Pneumonic Plague?

With the latest news on pneumonic plague in China that has killed three as of this writing, and a town of 10,000 people is sealed off to try to prevent the spread of the infection, I thought it would be instructive to differentiate the different forms of plague.

The term “plague” has struck fear into the hearts of people for centuries and for good reason. Historically, plague has destroyed entire civilizations. Probably the most noteworthy, the “Black Death” of the 1300s, that killed approximately one-third of Europe’s population.

Plague is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis. It is found in animals throughout the world, most commonly rats but other rodents like ground squirrels, prairie dogs, chipmunks, rabbits and voles. Fleas typically serve as the vector of plague. Human cases have been linked to the domestic cats and dogs that brought infected fleas into the house.

People can also get infected through direct contact with an infected animal, through inhalation and in the case of pneumonic plague, person to person.

Yersinia pestis is treatable with antibiotics if started early enough.

There are three forms of human plague; bubonic, septicemic and pneumonic.

o Bubonic plague

This is the most common form. In this form the bacteria enter the body through the bite of an infected flea or rodent. Here the bacteria infect the lymphatic system. After a few days to week, the person will experience fever, chills, weakness, and swollen lymph glands. These are called buboes.

In the U.S., bubonic plague is sporadic, primarily in the West. Typically there are around 10 cases annually here. Just a couple months ago, there was at least one death and several exposures in New Mexico.

Untreated bubonic plague is fatal about half the time.

o Septicemic plague

This form is also contracted from a flea or rodent bite. Sometimes it appears subsequent to untreated bubonic or pneumonic plague. It involves bloodstream dissemination to all areas of the body. Buboes do not occur. Symptoms are endotoxic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Untreated septicemic plague is nearly always fatal.

o Pneumonic plague

Probably the most serious form of plague and it’s when the bacteria infect the lungs and cause pneumonia. It is contracted when the bacteria is inhaled (primary) or develops when bubonic or septicemic plague spreads to the lungs.

Pneumonic plague is contagious and can be transmitted person to person. It is highly communicable under appropriate climate conditions, overcrowding and cool temperatures. This is the form that is of concern in China today. Untreated pneumonic plague is frequently fatal.

In the U.S., there has not been a case of person to person transmitted plague since 1924.

Due to antibiotics, improved sanitation and better living conditions, in 2007 there was just over 2000 cases of plague worldwide with approximately 150 deaths.
