Leucorrhoea, or the whites, is a symptom of many diseases peculiar to women. It is a condition in which there is a whitish discharge from the vagina resulting from inflammation or irritation of the membrane lining the genital organs of the female. It may be thick and viscid, and foul smelling. Usually the normal secretions are slimy and slightly sticky and the quantity of vaginal secretions varies throughout the menstrual cycle, peaking at ovulation and also increasing when under emotional stress.

Causes and symptoms:

In addition to infection, some hormonal and metabolic disorders are also responsible for the condition. It occurs commonly among weak, emaciated, and anaemic women. It can also be due to inflammation of the womb following childbirth, displacement of the uterus, or gonorrhoea. Among young females, it may be due to thread worms, as the result of general debility combined with lack of cleanliness or infections.

In addition to the whitish discharge from the vaginal tract, there is weakness as well as pain in the lumbar region and the calves. A burning sensation may be present along with constipation. In a chronic form, leucorrhoea causes irritability. The patients develops black patches under he eyes. Late nights precipitate the attack.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Leucorrhoea:

The first step to be taken in cases of leucorrhoea, therefore, is for the patient to exercise her body by running or by household work. A regular bath with warm water and a strong soap can also help in many cases where the cause is lack of personal hygiene. Wholemeal flour and green vegetables should form the major part of the diet. Milk and milk products should be avoided in the first fortnight of the treatment. Take sun bath everyday for fifteen to twenty minutes. Sit in the sun till you start perspiring. Sipping warm water while sun bathing will help induce sweat. Bathe with cold water after sun bathing. Sun bathing should be precede a meal by one hour or succeed it by two to three hours.

Ayurvedic remedies:

  1. Soak about 10gm of dry coriander in 100ml of water overnight, and drink the water in the early morning.
  2. A regular douching of the genital tract with a decoction of the bark of the banyan tree or the fig tree is very helpful. A tablespoonful each of the powders of the bark of the trees should be boiled in a liter of water till it is reduced to half. Douching with the lukewarm decoction keeps the vaginal tract healthy and clean.
  3. Put a few hibiscus rosa-sinensis in hot ghee and sauté for about 5 minutes. Cool the ghee. Take out the flowers and eat it.
  4. Fenugreek seeds should be taken internally in the form of tea and also used as a douche.
  5. Mixed 1 cup of water with a cup of milk and boil it. Add 1 tablespoon of dry ginger to it. When it reduces to half add brown sugar to it. Have this for 5- 6 weeks.
  6. Mix a tablespoon of dried amla seeds powder and a ripe banana and take it everyday for at least 40 days.
  7. A decoction of the fresh walnut leaves can be beneficially used as a douche in the treatment of leucorrhea.
  8. Kumari (Aloe vera) is another wonderful remedy for the condition; it tones up the tissues of the uterus and prevents the exudation of any abnormal fluids.
  9. Alum or tankan is also one of the drugs used in leucorrhoea.

Ayurvedic medicines and prescription:

The medicine of choice for this condition is Pradarantaka Lauha, a compound of some calxes, of which iron is the most important. A proper course of treatment should be:

  1. Pradarantaka Lauha; Chandraprabha; Pushyanuga Churna: 240mg of Pradrantaka Lauha, 500 mg of Chandraprabha and 1gm of Pushyanuga Churna should be taken every morning and evening with decoction of the root of Kusha grass.
  2. Yamani Shadava: 4 gm to be taken twice daily.
  3. Ashokarishta: 20 ml to be taken twice daily along with Yamani Shadava.

Alternatively the following prescription should be advice:

  1. Kukkutanda Twakbhama; Yashaba Bhasma; powder of Amla: 240mg of Kukkutanda Twakbhasma, 120mg of Yashada Bhasma and 500 mg of powder of Amla to be taken in the morning and evening with honey.
  2. Chandraprabha; Triphala Powder: 500 mg of Chandraprabha and 3 gm of Triphala powder to be taken at mid-day and night with warm water.
  3. Darukadi Churna: 6 gm may be taken last thing at night with cow’s milk.

Diet and other regimen:

A strict dietary regimen is necessary. Fried and spicy foods are to be avoided, as are pickles and other savouries. The patient should be encouraged to chew betel nut (supari) after meals: it has a curative effect and also prevents the development of disease.

The patient should avoid mental strain of all kinds. Late nights and sexual intercourse are to be avoided. A brisk early morning walk is helpful.

Shingles is derived from the Latin & French words which means belt or girdle. This signifies a broad distribution of a rash. This distribution is usually on one side of the body.

Causes Of Shingles

Symptoms Of Shingles

Shingles often shows a typical stage. The symptoms occur in the following fashion –

1. The Rash stage – In the start, a patient may feel like they are having the normal viral infection. The symptoms are common as that of flu. These are headache, nausea, fever with chill. These symptoms are the primary symptoms before the outbreak of skin rash. If the disease is diagnosed at this stage & treated properly, the chances of further progress of the disease is lowered to a greater extend. This stage is the right time to boost the immune system. Normal treatment includes antiviral medicines. Then the rash appears about 3-5 days after this stage. This is accompanied with certain other symptoms like burning & tingling sensation, itching, numbness & burning pain.

2. The eruptive stage – This stage is characterized by the outbreak of blisters with pain. Blisters are often filled with clear fluid. The common sites of such blisters are on buttock, arms, legs, face. These usually occur on one side of the body. This stage may continue for about 2 weeks. The clear fluid in the blisters slowly gets converted into pus during this stage & leads to scabbing. This is highly contagious stage. Also patient may suffer from pain & itch. So he/she may like to wear loose clothes in order to avoid contact of anything with the eruptions.

3. This stage: Post Neuralgia – In some cases, the patients may feel continuous pain along the nerve pathway where earlier blisters were present. This pain even persists after the complete healing of blisters. This is the post neuralgia. Anti-inflammatory creams and oils can be helpful in such condition.

Spinal nerves are pairs of sensory and motor nerve bundles that have their root in the spinal cord. Here, a child will develop the ability to regulate their emotions; this means that they will rarely act on them or deny that they exist and repress them. They will be able to just be with them, without getting too caught up in them. And if they become too overwhelming, the child will learn that it is safe to seek assistance in others.

Emotional Dysregulation

In this case, the child will not develop the ability to regulate their emotions. This means that the child will have to either act on them or to deny and repress them. They won’t be able to just be with them and will end up being caught up in them. And during times of being overwhelmed, they are unlikely to feel safe asking for assistance.

Empathic and Unempathic

The first example will relate to a caregiver that is empathic and the second example is for a caregiver that is unempathic. An empathic caregiver is emotionally available and will generally mirror, match, hold and sooth their child during emotional distress.

And an unempathic caregiver will is likely to be emotional unviable. So this means that they generally won’t mirror, match, hold or sooth their child during emotional distress.

These are just general guidelines, as there is likely to be moments where it won’t be this black and white. However, this creates an idea about what it is like.


As a result of the above taking place, it is likely to lead to completely different consequences. If as a child, one learned to regulate their emotions through having an empathic caregiver; it is likely to mean that one will have a tendency to either regulate their emotions or to seek support in other people.

And if as a child, one didn’t learn how to regulate their emotions through having an unempathic caregiver; it is likely to mean that they will have a tendency of either repressing their emotions or of acting on them.


So the first child is rarely going to have to repress their emotions and this means that when this child grows into an adult, there shouldn’t be the need to repress them either.

But the second child, who has to repress their emotions, will likely grow into an adult that continues to repress their emotions. And this is inevitably gong to lead to an emotional build up in the body.

These emotions will have accumulated from when one was a child and all of the emotions that one has experienced as an adult, but denied and ignored.

Different Types Of Repression

For some people, this will involve certain moments as a child where they were abandoned, ignored, rejected, humiliated, felt hopeless, helpless, suicidal, guilty and ashamed for instance.

These can relate to the odd occasion or perhaps when one experienced these things on a daily or consistent basis. This can also include traumatic moments where one was: physically, emotionally or intellectually abused as a child.

And due to these moments taking place many years ago, they are generally blocked from the mind. But the body remembers these feelings and will not be silenced until they are recognised. This creates a heavy burden on the body and can result in a loss of energy.

Emotionally Trapped

In the beginning these may have only been emotions or feelings, but as time has gone on, they have become emotional states and have completely taken over. A bit like how one weed appears and soon after, the whole patch is covered in weeds.

So the fact that there were only one or two weeds to begin with is hard to comprehend and finding the original weeds or weeds can then be extremely difficult. Here one no longer feels one or two emotions, but has become emotionally trapped. And no longer experiences one or two emotions, but a general feeling of being overwhelmed or – depressed.

Two Scenarios

It could be that one has felt this way their whole life or that one felt this way after a certain experience. This could be the result of some kind of loss or traumatic occurrence that triggered emotions that have been trapped and frozen in the body for so long.

For the first person it may be experienced as normal and how life is, simply because they have never felt any different. And for the other person, it might not feel normal. This could be due to the fact that these feelings have been repressed for so many years and this has caused a disconnection to occur.


Perhaps one has recognised the connection between how they felt as a child and how they feel as adult or just that they need to be assisted emotionally. And this can be done through the help of a healer or a therapist that will allow one to feel and therefore release their emotions

This doesn’t mean that one will be forever caught up in them. If it is done right, it means that one will be able to let go of the emotions that have built up. And their natural state lightness can return.

Blushing Phobia – When Blushing Becomes a Fear

Blushing Phobia, or rather Erythrobia, is a very common and learned fear harbored by chronic blushers. Wanting the blushing to stop and wanting to run away all at once causes most people to tense up and hold their breath or breath shallowly. Breathing shallowly indicates to the brain that this is a threatening situation in which pain is involved. This is why one of the best ways to conquer your blushing phobia is to start relaxing and breathing deeply during your blushing attacks. This will seem very unnatural at first, but try practicing every chance you get. You might even notice a difference within a few days.

The Six Most Common Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a normal and essential reaction to stress or danger that helps all of us to cope with everyday situations. We feel it before a big job interview, before an important exam or when dealing with difficult people. But when anxiety becomes an excessive, persistent and irrational fear or dread of everyday situations it is categorized as an anxiety disorder. Here we will look at some of the common disorders with a brief description of each.

The term anxiety disorder is defined as a chronic condition characterized by an excessive and often unrelenting sense of irrational fear, worry or dread, often producing any number of physical symptoms such as heart palpitations and sweating. While the exact cause of anxiety disorders is unknown, the condition seems to be brought on by both biological and environmental factors.

Common Anxiety Disorders

Included in the general “anxiety disorders” category are several specific types of common disorder, differentiated by the types of symptoms they produce and the way these symptoms affect the anxiety sufferer. Below are the most common ones, in no particular order.

  • Panic Disorder – characterized by sudden and intense bouts of overwhelming and irrational fear, usually reaching its peak after about 10 minutes and lasting in totality about thirty minutes to an hour. Often accompanying this deep and unreasonable fear are a host of physical symptoms including chest pains, sweating, shortness of breath, numbness and tingling and a general feeling of fatigue.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – characterized by persistent and irrational feelings of uneasiness or apprehension. People suffering from generalized anxiety disorder worry unreasonably about things like money, family, health and even death when there is no cause to support such worry. Physical symptoms such as trembling, muscle tension, sweating, frequent urination and labored breathing often go hand in hand with generalized anxiety.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder – often referred to as social phobia, is a condition characterized by an irrational and pervasive fear of social situations. Those coping with social anxiety disorder often refrain from participating in any type of social environment for fear of being judged by others or embarrassing themselves.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – characterized by constant and irrational fears that cause sufferers to engage in ritualistic behavior. For instance, someone with OCD might have an irrational fear or obsession about germs, and feel compelled to wash his/her hands constantly. The fear of germs in this situation is labeled the obsession, and the ritual of constant hand washing is the compulsion.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – This often surfaces following a specific traumatic event. It is usually seen in combat soldiers returning from war, PTSD can produce a constant state of fear and anxiety which is linked to the original traumatic experience.
  • Agoraphobia – characterized by an irrational fear of being anyplace where an anxiety-related event could occur. Those suffering from agoraphobia often relate their anxiety to a particular place and event, fearing they will not be able to escape when the anxiety reaches its peak. Usually this fear will cause them to avoid these places altogether.

According to the National Institute for Mental Health, as many as 40 million Americans, or eighteen percent of adults ages 18 and older, will suffer from some form of anxiety disorder in any given year.

While there is no universal cure for any of these common anxiety disorders, the symptoms associated with each can usually be managed effectively with medication and therapy. Untreated, however, they can create serious problems both at work and at home for those that suffer its effects.

How To Treat Toenail Fungus Infections At Home

Treating toenail fungal infections can be an expensive affair that may include taking of different over-the-counter drugs, using anti fungal creams and even surgery. These treatments are made to work in removing the fungi from the toenail and clearing off the infection. However, there are several other ways to treat this toenail fungus, including a wide array of home remedies. Some of these remedies include;

Soaking your feet in vinegar; Kitchen vinegar is used by many patients to inhibit the growth of fungal infections in the nails. The acidic contents of the vinegar kill the living micro organisms in the toes and restrict them from further growth and spreading. Patients are advised to soak their feet for between 15 and 20 minutes daily. The recommended ratio of vinegar to water is 1:2. It is important to rinse your feet well after soaking them in any acidic substance as it may eat away the skin around the foot. Dry your feet properly and leave uncovered for several minutes before sleeping or wearing shoes. In people who get irritations from the effect of vinegar on their already sensitive feet, it is recommended that they soak their feet only twice or thrice a week.

Vicks vapor rub ointment; This ointment has been used by many people who suffer from this condition. It causes a slight irritation around the infected area then leaves a soothing sensation. It has been proven to somewhat inhibit further growth of toenail fungus, but not cure it fully. However, it is advised that before you use this remedy, you consult with your doctor.

Australian tea tree oil; Application of this tree extract on the infected area of the toenail is known to reduce the effects of fungi on the toenail. It is also known to kill the already living microorganisms within the nail bed.

Grape fruit seed extract; Grape fruit seed extract is acidic in content. The acid in the seeds is applied on the infected area at least twice a day or less frequently depending on the effects it has on the patient.

All the above mentioned remedies have proven to be helpful and in some cases, have even cured the ailment. However, all these home remedies should be accompanied by a whole lifestyle change. This change will reduce exposure to risk factors that increase the likely hood of recurrence even after treatment.

Some of these risk factors that can be avoided during the period of treatment include;

Applying nail polish on affected nails; Nail polish makes it harder to identify the infected areas of the nail and the areas that need immediate attention. It also gives the fungi an adequate environment to thrive and multiply increasing the rate of infection.

Wearing closed shoes in hot areas; The daily routine of wearing closed shoes while going to and during work is another risk factor that should be avoided during and after the period of treatment.

Poor foot hygiene; It is important to pay attention to your feet at all times especially after long hours in shoes and socks. Check your feet regularly and dry them before and after being in shoes for a long time.

Ankle Braces – Better Than Casts For Ankle Sprains

An ankle sprain usually comes as a result of landing on the ankle improperly during sports or other daily activities. It is important that the injury is treated promptly in order to ensure proper healing. Certain protocols are used to reduce the swelling, decrease the pain, and reduce the amount of pressure that is put on the ankle. Medical professionals teach their patients to use the RICE technique for healing an ankle sprain. This is an acronym for rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Rest: You should stay off of your feet as much as possible. Using crutches for any necessary walking will reduce the pressure on the injured ankle.

Ice: You should ice the ankle immediately and as often as possible. This will help to decrease swelling and minimize the pain.

Compression: This helps push swelling away from the ankle. An elastic support or ankle brace is ideal for this.

Elevation: Supporting Keeping the ankle above the heart will help reduce swelling and lessen the pain of the sprained ankle.

Pain relievers and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be very helpful. Less pain means getting back to regular activities more quickly as well as being more comfortable during the healing process.

It is important to keep some motion in the ankle during the healing process. Years ago the most common treatment was to put the ankle in a plaster cast, but this causes muscle degeneration which makes the ankle weaker and more prone to re-injury even after the sprain has healed. Using ankle braces is much more effective as it allows just enough movement and pressure to be placed on the ankle to keep it strong, but not enough to cause more damage. Another great advantage is the ability to remove the ankle braces in order to bathe.

It generally takes about six weeks for the ligaments to fully heal and the swelling and tenderness can often last for a couple of months. You may even need some physical therapy in order to fully regain proper use of the ankle after a serious sprain. Using mild ankle braces for physical activity is probably an excellent recommendation and this should be done for an extended period of time (a year or longer, sometimes indefinitely).

It is important to follow your doctor’s advice and wear your ankle braces as long as directed in order to avoid ankle instability. This condition will keep you feeling as though the sprain is ready to return and make future sprains much more likely.

If ankle instability does occur, your doctor will likely recommend physical therapy to strengthen the ankle and surrounding muscles as well as supportive ankle braces to help distribute weight bearing on the ankle.

Ankle braces are definitely a better choice than casting for ankle sprains. Most people heal much more quickly and experience a decreased risk of ankle instability by using ankle braces. There are several styles to choose from and they are adjustable to ensure a perfect fit.
