How to Prevent Hip Dislocation After a Total Hip Replacement

After having a total hip replacement there are strict precautions that must be followed to prevent dislocating the hip. Prior to surgery your surgeon may have discussed these with you but for the most part they will not come into discussion until you have either gone through a joint replacement pre-operative class, or have begun your physical therapy.

There are three cardinal rules that are followed in rehabilitation of your total hip replacement.

1. Do not cross your legs.

2. Do not bend at the hips past 90 degrees

3. Do not turn your affected foot inward or internally rotate your hip.

There may be several others that are mentioned during your rehabilitation, but these are the three main precautions that will always be discussed. These precautions are generally followed for the first six weeks after surgery however, you want to discuss that with your orthopedic surgeon as they may have you follow these precautions longer.

By following the above precautions you can be assured that you are reducing the chances of a dislocation. When sitting be sure that you also are sitting in a chair that does not rock or move in any way. Be sure that the seat height does not allow you to sink deep enough that your knees rest or in other words are higher then your hips. If you find your knees higher then your hips you are breaking the 90 degree plain.

Do not cross your legs when you are sitting. this something that is easy to do. Now in my estimation the leg you want to avoid crossing is the leg and hip that were operated on. Nursing or doctors will tell you to avoid crossing either leg due to the possibility of compromising blood circulation in your lower extremities however and this is a good rule to follow. If you cross the leg and hip that were operated on then dislocation is possible. Crossing the strong leg over the operated leg will not result in dislocation.

Avoid turning your operated leg inward to where your foot is turned inward as well. By internally turning your foot this movement is generated at the hip causing the possibility of dislocation.

This is easily done when you are walking for instance and when turning while using a walker or cane, you pivot on the affected leg instead of picking it up. When you pivot on the affected leg you will in turn internally rotate the hip possibility causing the head if the femur to jump out of the socket.

Now for the most part I have found it takes two of the three precautions to be broken at once before dislocation will take place but this is not a hard fast rule either. This will depend on the integrity of the surrounding soft tissue around the hip and the type of hip prosthesis used.

The first six weeks of your rehabilitation will be vital to strengthen the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments so that they will do their job in supporting the hip joint and locking in the prosthesis.

There are roughly 250,000 or more hip replacements done a year in the US, the dislocation rate is somewhere between 1-3%. Dislocation is something not to be fearful of but to respect during the rehabilitation process.

Check with your surgeon for the exact time frame to follow the precautions then once that time has expired and the hip sufficiently healed, you will be back to living the life you expected and deserve pain free at last.

How to Increase Pancreatic Digestive Enzymes Naturally

The main sign of deficiency of the pancreatic digestive enzymes is indigestion.

The gastrointestinal tract is a tube that goes from the mouth to the anus where digestion occurs. Digestion means that everything that we eat such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, etc., turn into our cells and tissues. The process of digestion largely depends on the pancreatic enzymes that split proteins, fats and carbohydrates into small particles – molecules, which can go through the gut’s wall into the blood and lymph. Our body uses these small particles to build its own cells and tissues.

The first part of the small intestine called duodenum is the most important place where 50% proteins, 90% of the fat and carbohydrates are digested. Digestion in the duodenum mostly depends upon the actions of the pancreatic enzymes and bile.

When the food is not digested properly the gut’s microorganisms tend to ferment it with releasing a lot of gas and many toxic irritated substances. Our body has only two openings to release these not properly digested food particles, gas and toxic materials: the mouth and anus.

Therefore it is easy understand the causes of the symptoms of the indigestion such as gas, bloating, belching, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and pains. This is an attempt of the body to get rid of the toxic stuff through the mouth.

On the other hand, lower abdominal pain, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea are the reactions of the body on the not properly digested food and using another way to move the gas and toxic materials throughout the anus.

Many people suffer from the symptoms of indigestion and do not know that increasing pancreatic digestive enzymes can improve the digestion and alleviate their symptoms.

Numerous people have never heard about the work of the pancreas or about pancreatic digestive enzymes. Humans could not survive without the digestive enzymes and the proper pancreatic function.

The pancreas and also the liver are two major digestive alkaline glands. They manufacture alkaline pancreatic juice and alkaline bile. Alkalinity of these glands is the core for the proper digestion.

Unfortunately, most of us have acidic life style. Stress, sedentary life style and acid-forming food such as processed products, sugars, white flour and a lot of meats make our body very acidic. Alcohol, drugs, some medications, Candida-yeast overgrowth can cause whole body acidity as well.

It is easy to prove if you are acidic or not by finding the measurement of the saliva and urine pH by litmus paper at home. Saliva and urine pH less than 6.6, shows that the person is in acidic condition.

Acidity kills the pancreas and liver and badly influences in the digestion by many ways.

Acidity change biochemistry of the bile and pancreatic juice making them very aggressive and irritated. It causes the inflammation, ulcers and possible cancers of the liver, pancreas, duodenum, stomach and colon. Aggressive acidic pancreatic juice and bile lead to spasms of many ducts, especially sphincter of Oddi – the central gate between the bile, pancreatic duct and duodenum. Spasms of the sphincter of Oddi is a common reason for the abdominal pain and pancreatitis; inflammation of the pancreas.

Acidity decreases activity of the pancreatic digestive enzymes. People can be on a healthy diet, but suffer of indigestion that means starvation between the abundance of the foods. Pancreatic digestive enzymes work only in the alkaline milieu.

The first, very important action in any kind of GI tract disorders with symptoms of indigestion is normalizing the proper, slightly alkaline acid-alkaline balance.

Only supplying the body with minerals and bicarbonates can naturally restore normal acid-alkaline balance. People can get them from alkaline-formed foods such as vegetables and non sweet fruits, healing mineral water such as Karlovy Vary mineral water, supplementation with minerals such as cellular magnesium-potassium, etc.

If many people know about alkaline-formed foods, or alkaline actions of supplemental minerals, drinking the healing mineral water is sound as something new. Drinking the healing Karlovy Vary mineral water has 500 years of history of healing variety of the digestive and liver disorders in Europe.

The small town in Czech Republic; Karlovy Vary is a famous world-class health mineral spa from the 16th century. From that time, hot spring water from the geyser Vridlo was vaporized to make genuine Karlovy Vary thermal spring salt. By the opinions of the European doctors, mineral water that is prepared by dissolving this salt in the water at home has the same healing benefits as the water from the spring.

Mineral content of the Karlovy Vary healing mineral water is close to the content of the human plasma but has more bicarbonates and essential trace elements such as cobalt, zinc, selenium, etc. Millions sick and healthy people have safely drunk Karlovy Vary mineral water for healing, rejuvenation and cleansing for the centuries.

This water provides the body with vital minerals and bicarbonate, which are essential parts of the pancreatic juice and bile, and water makes these fluids alkaline. The European doctors found that Karlovy Vary healing mineral water enhances work of the pancreas. The pancreas produces more pancreatic enzymes. Water makes alkaline environment in the duodenum for proper function of the pancreatic digestive enzymes. It is known that pancreatic digestive enzymes can work only in the pH 7.5 and above that means truly alkaline environment.

Most nutrient digestion and absorption take place in the small intestine and really depend upon the proper amount and good quality of the pancreatic digestive enzymes. Epidemic of the digestive disorders has right connection to the decreasing of the pancreatic digestive enzymes. This is a price for ignoring biological law and abusing the pancreas; the vital alkaline digestive gland.

The Importance of Period Regularity

Period is also known as menses or menstrual cycle which refers to the monthly shedding of blood from the lining of the uterus if no pregnancy occurs. During the menstrual period, a woman will lose about 80ml of blood and experience hormones drops. The lining will thicken with blood and tissues again to prepare for the next pregnancy.

Most women have their period every month at an interval of 28 days. Some women have their period at a shorter interval of 26 days while others at a longer interval of 34 days. What is more important for a woman is that she is having a regular period and it lasts for about 5 days. A woman should have about 13 menstrual cycles each year and up to 450 periods in her lifetime. Only women having menstrual periods can get pregnant naturally.

If a woman has little blood shed before her period, it could be a symptom of contracting sexually transmitted disease (STD). A further check can be done by observing the vagina discharge to check if there is foul smells, yellowish-green in colour or she had experience sharp itchiness. If she suspects of having it, she can consult the doctor for treatment.

During pregnancy, a woman will stop menstruating. She will resume her period after giving birth to her baby. Other factors such as underweight, overweight, sick, stress, or addicted to drug will affect a woman period regularity and shut off the ovulation. Menopause is when a woman has not had a period for 1 year. Clinical tests can prove that the ovaries are no longer making the female hormones and are not able to produce an egg for reproduction.

Consult a doctor if the following happens:

· A sudden change in the period regularity

· Heavy menstrual bleeding

· Unable to start menstruating by age 16

· Missed period

· Bleeding between periods or after sexual intercourse

Eye Doctors Explanation of Why Freckles and Spots in Your Eyes Need Monitoring With Vision Exams

So you have been told by your eye doctor there is a freckle in your eye. Should you be worried? It could be a number of things but the most likely are choroid nevus or benign choroid melanoma congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigmented epithelium. Both conditions are usually benign and not a serious problem. They both need to be monitored to make sure they are not malignant melanomas.

Congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigmented epithelium (also known as halo nevus) is a pigmented, well demarcated dark spot inside the back of your eye on your retina. Though size varies, it is convenient to think of it as about equivalent to the top of an eraser on a pencil. It is an accumulation of increases in pigment in the cells of the retinal pigment epithelium cell layer. This is hypertrophy, or an increase in the size but not the number of cells. The blood vessels underneath it atrophy also which results in a small blind spot which you are not capable of perceiving. While there are often changes over time; it is mostly a stable, inconsequential change and congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigmented epithelium can be thought of like a freckle on your skin. The difference is you can’t observe it for any changes like you can a spot on your hand, so serious conditions can advance past the treatable stages. On rare occasions a halo nevus can change from a normally flat surface and develop elevated nodules. The formation of these  tumors are very rare but something eye doctors do check for on an annual basis. Usually no further tests are required other than eye exams with your eyes dilated in 3-6 months after first observation, then annually there after.

Congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigmented epithelium also occurs in a form called “Bear Tracks.” Bear tracks are multiple dark spots in the back of the eye that look like little bear footprints. They frequently occur in conjunction with a condition called familial polyps  and require further testing for colon and rectal cancer. This can be due to a dominant gene that is often seen to run in families as an predisposition to colon cancer. Bear Tracks may be seen years before the cancer occurs so they may be a valuable preventative sign to your optometrist. Bear tracks may require a referral to another specialist  for further evaluation. Not every patient with Bear Tracks will get colon cancer, but it is more likely if they are large, present in both eyes, and there are more than 3 or 4 spots in each eye. Isolated single congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigmented epithelium spots are not associated with Familial polyps or an increased risk of colon cancer.

Trauma to the retina whether from injury or infections in the eye can cause dark spots similar to congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigmented epithelium but they are irregular in shape. They are due to an actual increase in the number of retinal pigment epithelial cells. The primary  concern in this case is to monitor the condition that caused it. If it is an infection in one of the layers of the eye it could recur at a later date.

A choroid nevus is indeed like a nevus (freckle) but it is occurring in the choroid, the level below the retina which supplies circulation to the retinal tissue. These appear as round, gray, usually flat spots and are very common occurring in up to 30% of the population. They are also referred to as benign choroid melanomas, though they are not true melanomas. They are due to an increase of pigment cells in the choroid. These types of cells are found in our skin and in parts of the eye. The retina does not have the same type of pigment cells, it has pigmented epithelium cells instead. A choroid nevus is usually flat, but does appear more similar to melanomas in the choroid due to being located at the same level below the retina. They require closer observation and sometimes further testing to make sure they are benign spots. Any nevus can undergo transformation to a melanoma but it is very rare.

Testing to diagnose any new spot observed can include ongoing observation, optical coherence tomography techniques of imaging the layers of the retina, digital imaging pictures, and dye imaging of the retina. A dilated exam of the inside of your eye  annually is the only technique that allows eye doctors to adequately detect most of theses spots. Although this can be mildly uncomfortable causing light sensitivity and mild dry eyes, it should be done by you optometrist. Frequently patients have not had their eyes routinely dilated in the past so when your optometrist finds a new spot or freckle in your eye it may have been there unchanged for years. You can be reassured in knowing  that the large majority of the time it is completely innocuous and only needs to be rechecked once every year for any changes. In areas with large amounts of UV exposure like Northern Colorado, sun wear with UV protection can help reduce the risk of melanomas. There is some controversy over UV exposure and cancer, and some suggestions that vitamin D may reduce certain type of tumors and the colon cancer seen associated with bear tracks. In the future, sun wear and moderate exposure to UV could become the recommendation.

Uterine Fibroids Diet – What You Should Eat If You Have Fibroids

If you have fibroids, you may be exploring your treatment options and like many women, you may be disappointed with the conventional treatments on offer. Indeed, there is little which can be done permanently for fibroids, with even surgery often resulting in re-growth within a few short months. However, following a uterine fibroids diet which includes fibroid-friendly foods and excludes known aggravators, you can help manage your symptoms considerably.

Fibroids form as a result of a number of factors, both primary and secondary, which happen to interact with our unique genetic make-up to trigger fibroid growth. Diet is a major contributory factor for many women and so it makes complete sense that eating the right kinds of food can help to reverse some of the damage which has been done.

In many ways, a uterine fibroids diet follows the principles of a generally healthy diet.

* Eat organic foods where possible

* Avoid foods with additives

* Eat only lean meats

* Avoid processed foods

* Eat moderate portions-avoid overloading the system even with healthy foods

* Avoid fish from polluted waters

* Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables

* Avoid dairy products

* Avoid refined carbohydrates and sugars

* Eat plenty of sprouting beans, such as aduki, lentils and barley

* Where possible, eat foods in their natural state

As well as what you should eat if you have fibroids, if you are following a uterine fibroids diet attention should be paid to what you drink. Filtered water is great for your system and will both hydrate your essential organs and act as a cleanser, by flushing impurities out of the system. Herbal teas, such a Chamomile and Dandelion a fine, but you should avoid caffeine, alcohol and sweetened fruit juices.

Dietary changes are just one part, albeit an important one, of the natural therapies you can try if you have fibroids. Also helpful are detoxification and cleansing protocols, stress management and alternative therapies such as acupressure and acupuncture.

What Are Ruptured Cysts?

An ‘ovarian cyst’ refers to the fluid that encloses within a highly thin membranous covering. Usually, if the size of an ovarian follicle is more than two centimeters, then it is categorized as an ovarian cyst. Although, it is not as dangerous as complex ovarian cysts, it definitely requires proper treatment, as it can be troublesome in effect to the health of the bearer of such cysts.

Some ovarian cysts can lead to a lot of physical pain as well as bleeding among women and eventually become ruptured cysts. In many cases of ovarian cysts, there would not be any pain; instead, they are supposed to be functional in nature.

In fact, ovarian cysts have an effect on females, belonging to various ages. They form most frequently, nevertheless, during the years, when the female possess a child inside her body. In certain cases, where the size of these cysts is larger than five centimeters in diameter, there may be even a need of an operation for eradicating them before they rupture.

The most general symptom of a ruptured ovarian cysts is tedious pain or brutal, rapid and pointed pain or discomfort in the lower part of the stomach, pelvis, vagina, lower back or thighs. The strain may be either continuous or may occur now and then.

There are several other symptoms, which may take place in the case of an ovarian cyst formation such as the sense of physical burden, force, inflation inside the stomach; breast softness; strain either all through or immediately after the menstrual phase.

Doctors give treatment in this case, based on the dimension of the ovarian cyst formation that has taken place in the women’s body as well as considering the various other symptoms. In case of small, asymptomatic cysts, doctors recommend the response based approach with regular check ups in most cases.

In certain more serious cases, where cysts are large and persisting and can lead to ruptured ovarian cysts, doctors may suggest surgery. The doctor may suggest to undergo certain operations for the sake of eliminating the ruptured cysts without damaging the ovaries, while others may require removal of one or both ovaries.

There are certain cysts that sustain over two or three menstrual cycles or occur in post-menopausal women, indicating highly severe ailment and should be investigated; through certain scientific means such as ultrasonography and laparoscopy.

Therefore, whatever may be the cause of an ovarian cyst, the women suffering from this medical problem needs to properly follow the instructions of the concerned medical practitioners, without fail, as there are chances of such cysts to turn into complex cyst and rupture, which can be a very life threatening issue for them, in there life.

Candida – The Cause of Many Health Issues

What is Thrush?

“Thrush”, “yeast infection” and “candida” are all terms used to describe an overgrowth of the fungal microbe, Candida albicans in the body. Candida lives throughout the body and in a healthy person, is kept in balance by the body’s “good bacteria” and immune system. In certain conditions, however candida can flourish and may cause any of the following problems for the sufferer.

If you have one of the conditions listed below, you are advised to try an “anti-candida diet” as well as any of the specific remedies suggested.

Chronic Nasal Congestion Caused by Candida.

Do you suffer from nasal congestion that tends to block your sinuses, recurs in all seasons, yet the small quantity of mucous (if any) is clear (not coloured)? You may be suffering from nasal thrush. Another tell-tale sign is a white coating on your tongue where the nasal thrush has spread into your mouth.

Candida of the nasal passages may be relieved by:

• adding a drop of pure essential tea tree oil to a salt water nasal spray and irrigating your nasal passages regularly with this solution (only add a single drop because tea tree oil can burn the sensitive nasal passages if the mixture is too strong) – try adding a pinch of bicarb soda as well, since Candida does not like alkaline conditions.

• using a nasal decongestant spray. These sprays can be bought in pharmacies and chemists as well as many supermarkets. They work well to relieve the congestion temporarily, but they are not designed to be used continually and do not address the cause of your nasal congestion.

• eliminating mould spores from around your home. This may involve a “spring clean”, investing in a dehumidifier, getting sub-floor ventilation installed and / or ensuring exhaust fans remove steam from bathrooms and kitchens.

Oral Thrush

A white coating on your tongue that cannot be scraped off by your fingernail is the most obvious sign that you have candida of the mouth (oral thrush). You may also notice white “string – like” mucous in your mouth. Sometimes oral thrush may appear yellowish or even cottage-cheese like, and it may form into clumps inside your mouth.

Oral Thrush Treatments

There are many excellent anti-fungal oral thrush treatments available from chemists and pharmacies. They usually contain the anti-fungal drugs nystatin or miconazole. You take a measured quantity into your mouth and hold it for as long as you can prior to swallowing, several times per day.

A few drops of tea tree oil in a few tablespoons of water, makes an effective mouthwash / gargle to help prevent further recurrence of the problem.

Tinea and Jock Itch

Intensely itchy fungal skin infections such as tinea (usually of the feet / toes and sometimes the hands) and “jock itch” (of the perineum or scrotum) are also caused by the candida fungus. Antifungal creams are readily available from the chemist and pharmacy to treat these conditions.

For really stubborn or chronic fungal skin infections, try a zinc-cream-based nappy rash cream. The zinc helps the cream to adhere to the skin – even in moist areas – and smother the infection. Some of these creams contain anti-fungal medications as well as the zinc cream and work particularly well.

Yeast Infections of the Vagina

Chemist shops and pharmacies have many anti-fungal vaginal treatments such as the oral pill containing fluconazole and creams and pessaries containing clotrimazole. The best advice is to change treatments if you use these methods regularly – many strains of Candida are becoming resistant to the common anti-fungal drugs. Overuse of the same medication may mean it ceases to be effective for you.

Relieving the Intense Itching of Vaginal Thrush

A natural product called “LadySoothe” is effective at relieving the itching associated with vaginal yeast infections. LadySoothe contains tea tree oil, a natural anti-itch agent with anti-fungal properties.

STD Hepatitis – The Means of Acquiring This Infection

The hepatitis infection denotes the liver swelling, inflammation, and irritation due to hepatitis viruses like A, B, C, D, or E. There are so many variations of sexually transmitted contagions of hepatitis that are exposed today especially hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections; and whereas some of them require different tests and management to treat the condition. A lot of people who have persistent hepatitis encompass little to no signs and symptoms; as they may not even appear sick. As an effect, they might not discern they are infected. On the other hand, they can still multiply the virus can spread to other people.

Direct contact with discharges or fluids coming from a contaminated person is the main mode of transfer and spread. The virus can even be transmitted via other body discharges and fluids like the saliva and the semen. STD Hepatitis virus might stay alive on environmental exterior for about a week. Hepatitis C is transferred through the veins via blood, perhaps through fecal-oral route, and by personal contact such as sexual intercourse and the like. Similar to hepatitis B, hepatitis C could be dispersed by the carrier. Since hepatitis C can also be transmitted through the veins, the risks are comparable to those of hepatitis B.

Acute hepatitis virus infection in cases of individuals 15 years old below is hardly ever observed except if there are particular conditions such as a transfusion-associated outburst. Fulminant hepatic malfunction from hepatitis virus has never been depicted in children. Most interminably infected individuals of hepatitis virus are asymptomatic, with no complaints, or have unclear fatigue and/or abdominal pain. Nearly all individuals, especially the children, with HCV infection have regular or placidly abnormal serum trans-aminase level.

Pre-emptive prevention still remains to be the direction for hepatitis infection learning. Older children need education concerning high risk behaviors; as piercing and tattooing may be linked with hepatitis virus gaining particularly if self-applied, also as sharing straws and applies through nasal cocaine administration. Also prominent to those who have multiple sexual partners, those working with patients having the infection, those individuals working with used needles, and the handlers of blood and any kind of blood products. The transfer of hepatitis infection in IV drug abuser is noted, as is with sexual transmission. Deterrence of perinatal transfer must also be besieged. General examination for pregnant women if having hepatitis virus infectivity is not suggested. Post exposure immune globulin doesn’t stop illness. There is no medication accessible for declining maternal viral heaps in pregnant women; both ribavirin and interferon are not to be prescribed during pregnancy term.

Roughly 10% of those infected persons develop chronic dynamic hepatitis as an upshot from hepatitis infection, which usually leads to damage of the liver. The prediction of the contagion would be in eight to ten weeks; almost every infected individual having acute viral hepatitis display normal outcomes on liver function examinations. Cirrhosis might trail a grave case of hepatitis or persistent active hepatitis. Major hepatic cellular carcinoma is a probable problem of persistent hepatitis.

Get tested immediately; seek help from nearby STD clinics and ask for laboratory exams that will determine if you have the infection or not.

Fatty Liver Diet Recipes – Will I Have To Give Up The Foods I Love If I Have Fatty Liver Disease?

Healthy fatty liver diet recipes do exist and the good news is you’ll have plenty of variety to keep your taste buds from getting bored. The good thing about a diet plan for fatty liver is that it isn’t much different from a highly nutritious, healthy diet for the average person.

In most cases, you won’t have to completely give up the foods you love. You’ll just have to be more conscious about how much you’re eating, paying special attention to the amount of fat you’re consuming. More fat in your diet leads to more fat congestion in your liver. What you want is a nutritious, vitamin-rich and balanced diet where nothing is eaten in excess.

In her ebook, “The Fatty Liver Diet Guide”, veteran liver nurse, Dorothy Spencer, offers up over 30 fatty liver friendly diet recipes. These range from simple appetizers like salmon spread to main courses such as Caribbean shrimp ‘n peas. Even mouth-watering dessert recipes are included. Dorothy states, “The goal of this cookbook section is not to present you with gourmet dishes, but with healthful meals that fit within the dietary needs of a fatty liver patient.”

So as you can see, there are plenty of fantastic foods you can enjoy while you work on reducing fat in your liver. However, as you create your daily meals, there are some important considerations you should keep in mind in regards to the foods you eat.

Your main goal will be to reduce excess fat consumption. Most medical professionals agree fat should make up no more than 30% of your overall daily caloric intake. This means if you’re consuming 1500 calories per day, then no more than 450 of those calories should come from fat.

9 calories is equivalent to 1 gram of fat, so to put it in easier to measure terms, you shouldn’t consume more than 50 grams of fat for a 1500 calorie diet. A 1200 to 1500 calorie diet will help you lose weight while reducing fat in the liver.

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Go for brown rice and whole grains instead of white rice or white bread.
  • Opt for pasta instead of egg noodles.
  • If you don’t want to give up sweets, then opt for pies over cakes. Try to avoid things like doughnuts, cookies, and other high-fat sweets.
  • Focus on foods high in complex carbohydrates and avoid foods rich in simple carbohydrates like candy.
  • Substitute 2% and whole milk with 1% or skim milk.
  • Go for saturated fats over unsaturated fats, but consume all fats sparingly.
  • Avoid high fat salad dressings and other condiments. Seek out low-fat and non-fat alternatives.
  • Choose lean white meats (chicken, turkey, fish) over dark meats (pork, beef). Cut all excess fat off meats before cooking or eating and try to avoid meats from high fat areas such as ribs and wings.
  • Include foods high in fiber and eat plenty of vegetables and fruits.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption and drink soda, high sugar fruit juices, and energy drinks sparingly.

White Spots on Your Throat – What Are They?

When you look in the mirror do you notice little white spots on the back of your throat?

If so, then you most likely are searching through books and websites trying to self diagnose these white spots, fearing the worst. It could be some sort of strep throat. It could be “thrush”- a yeast infection in your mouth. Or it could be tonsilloliths.

Tonsilloliths or “tonsil stones” are little white or yellow balls of built up food, dead white blood cells and other particles in your mouth.

Ask yourself this: – Do you have a sore throat that accompanies the white spots on your throat? – Do you have trouble swallowing or does it feel like something is stuck on the back of your throat? – And, do you have really bad breath?

If you have answered Yes to any of the above, then those white spots on your throat are most likely tonsil stones. Tonsil stones occur in some people and not in others. Experts suggest that overactive salivary glands, an excess of oral bacteria, larger tonsils and bigger tonsil crypts, or crevices, all play a factor in tonsil stones.

Tonsil stones are not life threatening or even dangerous. They are just annoying as they can be irritable and also cause embarrassment. They have quite a strong unpleasant odour caused by the build-up of bacteria. Tonsil stones, similar to tarter, will continue to grow and harden with time. While some tonsil stones are only the size of a pea, others can grow as big as a marble.

Removing tonsil stones can be quite difficult. Some people simply sneeze or flex their throat and these white spots will remove themselves. Others have to use a toothbrush, a Q-tip or their finger to scrape at the tonsil stones. Others opt to have their tonsils surgically removed or lasered if the problem becomes too much.

If you are prone to these annoying white spots on your throat, then you need to ensure that you practice good oral hygiene. Adding baking soda to your toothpaste can also combat against the bad odour as well as chewing on mint, thyme or parsley leaves during the day.

And keep in mind that those yucky white spots on your throat as more common than you may think. You are not alone.

How to Treat a Goldfish Ulcer

Ulcer disease on goldfish is a very serious goldfish disease. The ulcers normally develop in areas where there has been attack by another parasitic disease or a fish has damaged its scales. Ulcers are a symptom of a bacterial infection (Pseudomonas and Aeromonas bacteria) Caused by poor water quality or an excessively high pH level. Also commonly affects newly imported goldfish. Ulcers can grow rapidly on a goldfish and spread to other in the tank so rapid treatment is recommended.

Treatment goldfish ulcer.

As soon as you see the beginning of an ulcer you must treat at once. The faster the ulcer is treated the less chance it has to grow.

1. Add aquarium salt at a dose of 1-3g/litre to reduce the amount of fluid that is lost directly through the open ulcer by reducing the osmotic gradient between the pond water and goldfish tissue.

2. Clean the ulcer. Use hydrogen peroxide or iodine to clean the ulcer, do not let the treatment get into the gills, eyes or mouth.

3. Use an antibiotics treatment by

·  Use Short-term baths for a few hours each day using anti-bacterial products such as potassium permanganate or antibiotics.

·  Apply a topical treatment directly on to the ulcer. For open sores it is recommended to wash them in iodine or hydrogen peroxide solution and apply antibiotic ointment.

To support the goldfish’s healing, offer a good food and raise the water temperature to 20-25°C and aerate vigorously. If the ulcers do not heal you will consult a vet for advance treatment.

Symptoms and Natural Cures for Acid Reflux

What are the symptoms of acid reflux and would you know if you have them? What does it feel like if you have GERD or acid reflux? Most people feel like they have a burning sensation in their chest or upper stomach. The pain can spread to the throat and can cause a hoarse voice or wheezing when you breathe.

GERD or acid reflux disease is a condition that leads to an uneasy feeling whenever the pain in the chest or upper stomach comes on. It occurs in children or adults who have a lowered esophageal stricture pressure in the lower esophagus. Heartburn is another name for GERD and it is caused by acid backing up in the esophagus from the stomach after eating a heavy meal or eating heavy foods. If heartburn occurs more than two to three times weekly, it’s called GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease and usually needs treatment.

Things that make reflux worse are eating a fatty or spicy meal and lying down immediately after a meal. Some natural cures for acid reflux include apple cider vinegar and ginger root.

Let’s look extensively at the remedies and ways of curing acid reflux. There are a variety of treatments to choose from. If you have symptoms less than five times monthly, you can get by with some of the natural cures for acid reflux or over-the-counter medications. Ask your physician for advice. If the drug store type medications don’t work, consider some of the natural medications for curing acid reflux. Medications made from natural herbs often have fewer or no side effects.

For severe situations of GERD, surgery may be recommended. The current surgical cure for cases of GERD includes a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. The surgeon wraps around a piece of the stomach to make a new sphincter and prevents it from opening up and letting acid into the esophagus.

When looking at natural cures for acid reflux, you’ll need to consider dietary changes as well as think about eating small regular meals rather than larger meals. Such a modified eating habit may be enough to cure the problem completely, especially if you quit smoking and drinking alcohol. Salty and fatty foods also seem to worsen acid reflux disease, so keep those to a minimum as well.

Lowering your body weight will also reduce acid reflux disease. Obesity leads to acid reflux problems so as you lose weight, you should have fewer problems.
