To gain real insight into the phobic puzzle, we must first discard our traditional classification system, with its confusing Greek and Latin nomenclature. What we need is a simple, scientifically determined system one that classifies phobias according to their underlying mechanisms, not their obvious triggers.

If we can do this, we will no longer have hundreds of labels that lead us to a never-ending series of dead ends. Instead, we will have a system that classifies all phobias according to three key types. The first two types are as follows:

Type 1: REALISTIC PHOBIAS

Type 1 phobias develop after the traumatic exposure to a real and present danger. For example, one night, while walking down the street, a woman is brutally mugged. This incident sticks in her mind and develops into an uncontrollable fear of walking the streets at night. Her phobia would be considered to have a realistic basis.

Here are a few more examples of realistic  phobias: a man develops a fear of knives after being stabbed; a woman develops a fear of horses after being thrown from one; a child develops a fear of flying insects after being stung by a swarm of bees, etc.

Type 2: NEUROTIC PHOBIAS

When this girl grows up, any number of sexual triggers may cause her fear and anxiety to resurface during a period of emotional stress. She may, for example, become afraid of walking the streets alone, since subconsciously or unconsciously she symbolically associates this “street walking” with the behavior of prostitutes. Or she may develop a fear of trains and cars, because subconsciously or unconsciously she sees these objects as phallic or sexual symbols. All of these fears would be considered to have a neurotic Type 2 basis.

Notice in the examples I have given how completely different underlying mechanisms can result in the development of agoraphobia.

The traditional phobic classification system would have grouped the Type 1 agoraphobic and the Type 2 agoraphobic together because both women seem to fear the same thing. That system also would have implied that both women should receive similar treatment.

But using our new classification system, it is clear that the phobias of these two women are related in name only. It is also clear that each woman requires a completely different treatment approach if she is to overcome her phobia, an approach dependent upon the specific underlying mechanisms determining that phobia.

Everything makes perfect sense so far? Good. But there is one last giant piece still missing from the phobic puzzle. You see, most clinicians would probably agree that all phobias can be classified as either Type 1, Type 2, or a combination of the two.

They would also agree that Type 2, neurotic mechanisms probably account for the vast majority of all phobic behavior, with Type 1, realistic mechanisms accounting for just a small minority. But clinical evidence suggests that Type 1 and Type 2 mechanisms together may account for less than 10 percent of all phobic behavior!

What about the other 90 percent? They are Type 3 phobias.

TYPE 3 PHOBIAS: THE MISSING LINK

Neurotic and realistic factors may be entirely responsible for some phobias, and they may contribute to others. But the vast majority of phobias can be traced to a physiological problem: a malfunction within the inner-ear system! The inner-ear system plays an important role in modulating and controlling anxiety. In my blog, see link below, I have further discussed these problems.

Writer’s Anxiety

The craft of writing is strange. In some ways it is exhilarating. In other ways, it can fill you with the greatest anxiety. Sometimes you can feel both euphoria and depression at nearly the same time.

I recall my own early attempts at writing; both for the writing support group I was in, as well as the writing tutor in the correspondence course I was doing. I’d done my best at writing the assignments, but then came the time to show them to someone else. Ouch.

Self-doubt was terrible; and I continue to be very grateful for the understanding support I got from both writing support members and my writing tutor. I look back sometimes on my early writing (like all writers, I think; I tend to hoard my early work!), and wonder how anyone could have seen any value in them at all.

Now, leading the writing group I joined nearly over a decade ago, I can see the same writer’s anxiety in other writers, particularly those who are new to the craft of writing. I do my best to relieve their anxiety, to show that I understand what they’re going through.

It’s not only fiction writing that can cause this writer’s anxiety either. Non-fiction writing also reveals you and your skill, and it can be very scary showing it about. What will people think of it? Will they like it? Will they rubbish it?

I have to confess I still experience writer’s anxiety myself, especially when trying anything new.

Perhaps you have succumbed to this anxiety, and decided you just haven’t got what it takes. Or perhaps you have decided to keep your work a secret, and you mumble in embarrassment if anyone asks you about what it is you’re trying to hide!

What can you do about this writer’s anxiety, really?

· Face it square on. Anxiety doesn’t prove you are a failure. It just shows you are a normal person.

· Realise that others are familiar with the same anxiety, and find supportive people to help you through it.

· ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’: Try to turn the emotional energy of nervousness into a motivator to expose your writing and give it the respect it deserves.

· The talent of writing is a gift. See the value in the writing itself, and for your writing talent’s sake, push ahead.

· Don’t be surprised by it. Your writer’s anxiety may never really go away. It can strike when you least expect it, too.

· Pray for God’s strength and wisdom. This has been an important source of help for me, as for many others I know of.

Don’t rubbish your writing, even if you are new at it. Every effort will take you on the path to improvement.

Does Melatonin Help With Insomnia?

Should you take melatonin to get rid of insomnia? First off, let’s look at what melatonin is. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone found in just about all living things, including human beings. It is also found in other living organisms such as algae.

Melatonin is a more beneficial supplement than other types of sleeping aids, because as we mentioned earlier, it is natural. Also, melatonin does not carry as many risks for addiction that sleeping pills do. However, this does not give you carte blanche to use it every night. While I recommend that you never use sleeping pills to conquer insomnia, I think occasional use of melatonin is fine. But if you use melatonin too much, your body will build a tolerance to it, and then you will have to use it to get to sleep. Also, if you have extreme insomnia where you are unable to get much sleep night after night, melatonin may not help you all that much, since it is not really all that strong.

If you are suffering from insomnia and are considering using melatonin, you should try to incorporate some other habits into your lifestyle to battle insomnia. A lack of sleep can be brought on by a number of factors, not just those related to your health. If you often go to sleep at random times, this could definitely trigger insomnia. Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule. If you are consuming caffeine or alcohol shortly before bed, and have trouble sleeping, eliminate using these products. These are just a couple of things you can do in addition to taking melatonin to get rid of insomnia.

Steps in Reducing Thick Toenails

There are several causes of thick toenails, the most common of which is the lack of necessary vitamins and minerals, together with the practice of poor hygiene. Thick toenails can also result from toenail fungal infections.

If this is your case, you will have to take antibiotics and antifungal medication to eliminate the infection first. Once the fungus is gone, the thick toenails will revert to their original condition.

Another source of thick toenails is heredity. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this and all you can do is mask the discoloration of your toenail with a nice-colored nail polish and hope people won’t notice. Thick toenails acquired genetically are not health hazards anyway, so it’s simply no big deal.

If your thick toenails are the result of improper hygiene and poor nutrition, you can follow these steps to help reclaim the original appearance of your nails.

1. Prepare a soaking solution made from 2 teaspoons of household detergent or Betadine and half a gallon of warm water. Soak your feet for 15 minutes. Make sure that the toenails in question are completely submerged the whole time.

2. Use a sterilized nail nipper to cut right above the nail line and clean the area with a nail brush or even an old used toothbrush.

3. Cover the thick toenails with a piece of 40% salicylic plaster large enough to just cover the surface area of the nail. Secure this plaster with adhesive and leave untouched for two days. During this time, you should keep it from getting dirty or wet.

4. Remove the bandage after 2 days and clean the toes thoroughly with soap and water. It is also advisable to use an antiseptic wash. Make sure the toe is completely dry afterwards.

5. If there are no apparent changes to the thick toenails, you must repeat the entire procedure from step 1. Take note however, that this procedure must be done for a maximum of only 4 or 5 times. If there are still no changes after this, you might need to see a podiatrist or dermatologist.

This 5-step procedure can also work in cases of genetically transmitted thick toenails but the nails will just grow back to their original thickness after just a few weeks.

After completing the process, try to take steps in improving your diet. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and other glow foods. These will not only make your toenails healthier and better-looking but improve your body’s immune system as well.

You should also increase your intake of fluids to cleanse your body more efficiently. The ideal amount is 8 glasses of water everyday, which can be alternated with fresh juices. Coffee, carbonated soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages should be minimized, if not eliminated from the diet.

Best Nail Fungus Cures and Remedies

Many of the best nail fungus “cures” and remedies are available through over the counter (OTC) medications, medications prescribed by a doctor, and even a few products you may have in your home’s cupboards. It is a real problem that plenty of people experience, yet do not wish to share their problem or solutions. Although nail fungus can occur on your fingernails, it usually shows up on your toe nails. It is very difficult to “cure” and even when it seems to have disappeared, it can re-occur again without proper care.

One of the very best remedies for this problem is keeping your nails very clean and dry and allowing them to “air” breath. A main reason for contracting a nail fungus problem is wearing tight shoes that are “air tight” which cause your feet to perspire and do not allow your feet and toenails to stay dry. This causes them to be in a constant state of dampness which allows the perfect environment for this problem.

There are many different types of nail fungus remedies, yet very few cures. Begin your treatment by wearing “breathable” shoes that fit well. If you wear socks, make them cotton, preferably organic cotton. Change your socks as soon as they become damp if possible and / or and dust your feet with cornstarch before dressing. Alternatively, buy and wear socks that absorb moisture.

Over the counter (OTC) remedies and cures include anti-fungal cream like Tineacide or liquids like Flexitol which is applied to the nail and nail-bed daily.

More aggressive forms of nail fungus remedies and cures include anti-fungal drugs prescribed by your doctor which may include Difulcan, or Sporanox. Unfortunately, these drugs may cause bad side effects like liver damage, headaches, nausea or more. These medications are very expensive if you do not have health insurance that covers prescriptions. They can cost as much as $300 – $400 a month for aggressive treatment and $100 – $150 a month for maintenance. And, they may also interfere with other prescriptions you are taking.

Home remedies that you may have in your home cupboard include soaking your feet in a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water, or dabbing apple cider vinegar directly on your toenails three times a day and allowing it to dry fully. Another nail fungus home remedy is rubbing toothpaste into your nail-beds. Also, soaking your feet in water mixed with sea salt has been reported to help this problem.

It usually takes up to 3 months to cure nail fungus. The “cure” happens by killing any fungus that is currently on your nails or nail beds. When your nail grows, it will grow without the fungus being present. Yet even after the problem is gone, it can re-occur again if you continue to wear too tight “non-breathable” shoes for excessive periods of time.

The best cure or remedy for nail fungus is prevention. This is one of those problems of once you experience it, the problems comes back very easily. Therefore, make sure you keep your feet and nails as clean and dry as possible. If you are in a damp environment like gym’s shower room, pool or spa area, do not walk around barefoot. You should wear flip flops or protective slippers.
