Recover Your Voice After Flu

If you’ve recently come down with a cold or sore throat, there are specific things you can do to help you recover your voice. Do you have a big performance planned in just a few days. Did you wake up with no voice this morning after that cold you had last week? This is a situation that might render you PANIC stricken but don’t you worry, relax.

Here Is What You Can Do To Rescue The Situation:

Remember that old adage “prevention is better than cure”? Well, the best way to recover from a loss of your voice is not to lose it in the first place and perhaps the best way to avoid losing your voice is to avert getting any respiratory infection. Easier said than done right?

Reduce Your Chance Of Getting Colds and Flu:

  1. Wash your hands frequently. If you aren’t near a facility with running water (such as an outdoor performance venue), carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you and use it.
  2. Try to avoid shaking hands with anyone who is coughing or sniffling. The most common method of transmission for infections is hand-to-hand contact. If you can’t avoid the handshake, wash your hands ASAP, and don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth in the meantime.
  3. If you are the one coughing or sniffling, don’t shake hands with anyone. If offered a handshake, grip your two hands together and say something like, “I’m glad to meet you, but I don’t think you want my cold.” If the other person is also a singer, s/he will understand and thank you for it.
  4. When you cough or sneeze, do it into a tissue, handkerchief, or your sleeve.
  5. Avoid sharing drinking vessels with anyone (water bottles, soda cans, whatever).
  6. Get plenty of rest and eat a healthy diet. A well-rested body is better able to resist infection.

If you weren’t able to avoid catching a respiratory infection, but haven’t lost your voice yet, you can take several steps to ride out the infection with your voice intact.

  1. Avoid speaking at all unless absolutely necessary. When you must speak, speak softly and at a higher pitch than usual. DON’T WHISPER! Whispering is the most stressful thing you can do to your throat.
  2. Drink lots of water. A hydrated larynx functions better.
  3. Drink hot liquids. Herbal tea is especially soothing, but almost anything will do; what matters is that it’s hot. The warmth soothes inflamed structures–it’s the same principle as putting a heating pad on a sore muscle. Also, breathing the steam may help relieve nasal congestion.
  4. Go easy on your rehearsals if possible. If you have to sing, use your head voice as much as possible. It’s a lot less stressful for your throat. DON’T sing at full volume in rehearsal. Save your voice for the performance.
  5. Work even harder than usual on your breathing exercises. If you are coughing, try to get a good deep breath before the cough; you will then be able to expel more “crud”.
  6. If you can, get even more sleep than usual. Sleep is often the best medicine.
  7. When you shower or bathe, don’t use the vent fan–let the room get steamy. Breathing in the warm moist air can help relieve chest or nasal congestion.
  8. For sinus congestion (if you feel pressure in your cheeks or forehead), soak a wash cloth in hot water, wring it out, and lay it over your face while you rest for a few minutes. Again, the warmth may relieve some of the congestion. It’s also soothing and relaxing.

If you’ve lost your voice anyway, don’t despair. Keep doing all of the above tips.

If the cold has gone on for more than two weeks, or if you thought you were over it and it came back, it’s time to see a doctor. You may have developed a secondary bacterial infection and need antibiotics. Even if you don’t need an antibiotic, prescription decongestants and cough suppressants may be helpful.

Even if you have lost your voice, you can still do a few vocal exercises. The breathing exercises are especially vital, but easy and non-stressful things like yawn-slides, vocal sirens, and humming can keep your apparatus functioning. Use your head voice as much as you can–it takes stress away from your throat.

Try to speak or sing over the infection–at a higher pitch than usual, using your head voice. It’s counter-intuitive; your instinct is to try to whisper or speak at a lower pitch, but those are the two WORST things you can do.

As you recover, keep using your head voice as much as you can. As your voice returns, usually your upper register comes back first, then your lower register, then your passaggio/middle register. And it WILL return; you just have to wait it out.

Of course, “just be patient” is not what you want to hear when your voice is your livelihood, or even if it’s not your livelihood, merely important to your mental health. But if you try to rush back into full-volume singing you run the risk of causing lasting damage. That would be even worse than being patient!

Controversial – really? Why would the cause of tinnitus be a controversial subject? This would include me, although I feel that my tinnitus has caused a certain amount of hearing loss in my case, and can cause a bit of an annoyance lying in bed trying to fall asleep while the symphony of uninvited noises play out in my head.

Can emotional issues, like stress and anxiety be a cause of tinnitus? Certainly, when the human body is under constant stress, many different chemical responses are in high gear, such as:

  • The cortisol level is high. Cortisol, a corticosteroid, also known as the “stress hormone,” is produced by the adrenal glands in greater quantities when a body is under stress. Blood pressure is up and blood sugar is raised also.
  • High blood pressure. As mentioned above, when the body’s cortisol level is up, so is blood pressure. Part of the mechanism of raising blood pressure is a constriction of the arteries. And when the arteries are constricted, blood flow through those arteries is louder (think of the sound a kinked hose makes). It is natural to assume that the louder blood flow in the ears compounds the existing tinnitus. And, when the body is constantly under stress (chronic), the blood pressure is constantly elevated – contributing to a sensation of a worsening of tinnitus, if not a cause of tinnitus.
  • Increased level of sugar (glucose) in the bloodstream. Glucose, the body’s main source of energy, is regulated by insulin which is produced in the pancreas. When a body is constantly stressed, the rise in glucose can lead to a form of diabetes, where the overworked insulin becomes less effective at controlling glucose. In at least one major study, it was learned that 84% to 92% of tinnitus sufferers were revealed to have a metabolic disorder called hyperinsulinemia, where the pancreas was attempting to regulate the glucose in the bloodstream by over-producing a less effective version of insulin. In short, the vast majority of tinnitus sufferers were shown to have a diabetes-like condition, possibly due to consistently elevated stress levels. Are most tinnitus sufferers diabetics? I don’t know, but I believe that consistently elevated stress hormones have been proven to cause a body much damage.

I’ll leave the judgmental part of this article up to each reader – all I can do is report he facts. I don’t believe that enough studies of this nature have been done to prove or disprove any of this. However, this may be good fodder for future thinking points when it comes to treating the cause of tinnitus.

– Relation between obesity and hypo-secretion of the pancreas is very well known. Most of the diabetic patients are obese. It is significant that by reducing their weight such patients derive a lot of relief or can even reverse the disease.

Lack of physical exertion also plays crucial role in developing obesity. Fat people lack the necessary physical exertion. About 300 calories can be burnt even if a person walks only 3 miles a day. Thus, it is imperative that those who wish to succeed in their efforts to lose excess fat have to increase their physical activities.

– Sometimes, the weight gained during the pregnancy does not get reduced after delivery. In cases of some women, there is a weight gain at the time of menopause and thereafter.

Actinic Keratosis Can Mimic Psoriasis!

Actinic Keratosis has been confused with psoriasis because of the similarities in the outward appearance on your skin. Both conditions are marked by dry, flaky, raised, scaly, rough, red skin. Of course, not all those symptoms need be present, but very often most of them are. As you know, psoriasis is the result of a defect with your immune system. Hence it is classified as an auto-immune disorder, whereby your body turns against itself. On the other hand, actinic keratosis is the most common precancerous condition of your skin. If left untreated, it can develop into squamous cell carcinoma which is the second most common type of skin cancer behind basal cell carcinoma.

While there is no way to avoid psoriasis, it is entirely possible to avoid actinic keratosis. That is because the former is probably in your genes and out of your control while the latter is self-inflicted! By that I mean it is the result of long-term exposure to ultraviolet light commonly found in sunlight. People who work outdoors and those who enjoy much time in the sun need to always be aware of wearing skin protection. Fair skinned individuals are even more susceptible to the damaging rays of the sun. As such, they need to apply a quality sun screen as well as re-applying it after spending much time in the sun.

The actual color appearance of the lesions in patients with actinic keratosis is not only limited to a red color. The lesions which are often felt before they can be seen, may also appear pink or grey. Some people say they have sun spots or age spots, but the bottom line is that these spots, if left untreated can become fatal which can be avoided in the first place if you use a little bit of caution before going outdoors.

MAs should learn how to separate work from personal life. From time to time, it is important to get away from work. Watch a relaxing movie at home or have something to do like a hobby. Reading, sketching and playing sports are some of the things that help people unwind. These activities can serve as diversion.

Medical assisting is very fulfilling, rewarding and the same time a very challenging career. Being a medical assistant is not as easy as most people see. Their daunting tasks often lead to stress and burnout. With the tips mentioned above, one can easily fight burnout. MAs are not robot. They too are prone to stress and burnout. They also need to enjoy their life so that they can be productive and effective at work.

Anxiety Disorders and the Media

One of the most powerful sources of information in society today is the media. The media not only reflects society but also drives it. It guides and shapes every single one of us in believing what is right, good and successful. Media-driven ideals regarding success are worshiped: we aspire to the examples of successful living they create. If we cannot achieve similar success we are deemed a failure and, even worse, made to feel a failure.

Hand-in-hand with success and failure comes criticism. Today’s society is also one of criticism. We love to criticize; to build people up then knock them down. Perhaps the negative feelings we all felt when criticized as a child find expression later in life by such means.

The media is extremely powerful; TV sits there in the corner of the room, day in and day out, bombarding us with messages, many of which are negative. (An interesting aside: many psychotic problems involve ‘hearing strange voices’ – well we all hear strange voices everyday, they travel through the air as radio waves and come out of small electronic boxes in our homes). Bad role models abound (their ‘badness’ often celebrated), ratings of the more base TV shows soar and sex and violence rules – perhaps reflecting the true human instincts rebelling against society’s constraints?

Culturally defined ideals are often shaped by the media and one of the most insidious, negative influences in our lives comes from advertising. Here, human nature is often prayed upon: we are deliberately made to feel inadequate and that nothing we have is quite good enough. But we can feel better, indeed we can be perfect and have perfect lives, just like those attractive people we see in the adverts – if only we buy the product!

The effect of advertising can lead to every single one of us feeling constricted and pressurized by an invisible force constantly driving us to have more in order to be better, in order to feel better.

One of the most disastrous effects of media on people’s lives (particularly women’s lives) is the preoccupation with body image.

Society is now obsessed with body image. Most adverts play on our deep instincts relating to attraction and procreation. We all have instinctual concepts of beauty (even infants) for it is seen as an indicator of health and good genes and advertisers use this for profit. Combining winning and losing and possessing with attractiveness and beauty, the media and society forge a strong bond between body image and success in our minds. One study in 1999, by Anne Becker (an Anthropologist at Harvard Medical School) reported a five-fold increase in the symptoms associated with eating disorders among Fijian girls (normally robust and happy about it) since the arrival of TV to Fiji in 1995. In Western society today, 80% of women are unhappy with their bodies and girls of nine and ten are going on diets.

If we don’t conform to these society-and-media-imposed standards of attractiveness, age and weight we feel different and are treated differently and may feel ‘not good enough’ – our inner feelings enhanced by manufactured images and ideals. And how we feel about ourselves, deep down, flows through all anxiety disorders and depression.

Perimenopause and Insomnia

One of the symptoms of perimenopause that is often the effect of other symptoms, rather than a symptom on its own is insomnia. It is quite a common occurrence among perimenopausal women, though. So much so that perimenopause and insomnia almost always go together. This can be really difficult for women to deal with because a lack of sleep usually causes inability to function properly or at one’s best during the day.

Often, perimenopause and insomnia is the result of night sweats, crashing fatigue, or anxiety, all of which are symptoms of perimenopause. Night sweats are sudden increases in body temperature, wherein the woman’s abdomen area gets so heated up that it can wake the woman up in the middle of the night causing discomfort and difficulty getting back to sleep.

Crashing fatigue, on the other hand is sudden debilitating tiredness during the day, sometimes lasting several days. However, it does result in over sleeping, which can lead to insomnia later in the evening. Finally, perimenopause and insomnia can be caused by anxiety or feelings of worry that many women going through this stage have, whether the worries are justified or not.

Just as some symptoms can cause the problem, other symptoms can be triggered by the insomnia; symptoms like irritability, lack of focus or concentration, and mood swings. Though these symptoms can be caused by the hormonal imbalance experienced during this time, they can all be further exacerbated by the fact that a woman lacks sleep.

If you find yourself experiencing perimenopause and insomnia, do not worry or panic. There are techniques or tricks you can do to help yourself get through the problem. Many women who face perimenopause and insomnia, do not exercise regularly or take the time to relax their body. Also, taking time to wind down, either through meditation or meditative exercises such as yoga, can help you assess what has happened in your day, and help any anxiety you may feel about work or any current life situation.

Finally, try to reduce the amount of caffeine you consume. Like it or not, caffeine is a stimulant, which means it will keep you up at night! The same goes for foods loaded with sugar. The extra glucose can make your body a bit “hyper”, and though it never affected you before, as we get older, our bodies can become more sensitive to the extra energy boosts that caffeine and sugar provide. So say good-bye to caffeinated beverages, and say good-bye to sugary sweets or sugary foods as well.

Remember, though perimenopause and insomnia are a common pair, it isn’t something you have to live with!

The most common way to prevent an ankle sprain of course is to abstain from playing risking injuries like basketball, football, volleyball, or soccer. For most sports enthusiasts this is completely out of the question. In that case high top shoes or some ankle braces can help provide support for the ankle.

You don’t want to use the full use of a brace for too long after an ankle injury. You want your ankle to naturally build its muscle and regain its use without the need of a brace. Using a brace too often may in fact weaken your ankle and make it more prone for future injury. Besides providing support for your ankle, there are a few exercises you can use to strengthen the muscles around the ligaments so that they won’t tear if another injury were to happen.

Ankle Tracers:

This is a simple exercise in which you take your ankle and trace the letters of the alphabet all the way from A to Z. To further the exercise you should trace plenty of circles and move your ankle as far up and down as it will go and as far left and right as it will go. To make it more difficult you can always use ankle weights.

Step Ups:

You will need the assistance of a step stool or stair for this exercise. Take the injured foot and place it on top of the stool and leave the other foot on the level ground. Then slowly straighten the knee of the injured ankle as your other foot lifts slowly off of the ground. Go up and back down 10 times.

Balancing Act:

This can be used with a stair or stool as well but instead of resting the uninjured foot back on the ground like in the step up, balance your weight on your injured foot for as long as you can. This will get easier over time but is a great rehabilitation exercise to get your ankle to back to normal. These are just a few of the many exercises you can use to strengthen your ankle enough to prevent future injury.
