Colon Health and Friendly Bacteria – Understanding Their Relation

Colon health is directly related to the presence of friendly bacteria. Colon is our large intestine. It is located at the end of our digestive tract. It is five and a half feet long and two and a half inches in diameter. It is often referred to as the sewage system of our body, because it is responsible for getting rid of the waste matter from our body.

Colon is also responsible for digestion and helping our body absorb nutrients from the food. And this is where the friendly bacteria come into the picture. Do you know that there are millions of bacteria living in your healthy colon? Some of these bacteria are good, while others are bad. In a healthy colon, the good outnumber the bad.

When there is an imbalance, that is the bad bacteria outnumber the good ones, it leads to a condition called dysbiosis. This imbalance causes many health issues, such as constipation, diarrhea, colon cancer, flatulence, ulcerative colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and much more.

Causes Of Dysbiosis

Let us find out what causes this imbalance. What factors lead to the bad bacteria taking over the friendly bacteria in our colon?

  • Antibiotics kill bad bacteria as well as good bacteria. Taking antibiotics for a long period of time leads to serious lack of friendly bacteria in our colon. It has often been seen that cancer patients or AIDS patients frequently suffer from yeast infection. This is because the antibiotics have killed off the good bacteria and this has led to growth of bad bacteria called Candida (which causes the yeast infection).
  • Oral contraceptives, corticosteroids, and aspirin can also kill good bacteria present in our colon.
  • Meat, high-fat and high sugar diet spell doom for friendly bacteria. Bad bacteria thrive on sugar and meat. So eating lot of meat and sugar provides the bad bacteria with an environment where they can thrive. When they thrive, obviously the good bacteria will die.
  • Chlorine water is one of the culprits responsible for killing good bacteria. Filter water is a better and safe choice.
  • Sudden change of diet, like when you travel abroad, can also lead to dysbiosis.

Good Bacteria

By restoring good bacteria you will be able to get the balance back. But what constitutes beneficial bacteria? Lactobacillus Acidophilus, commonly referred to as acidophilus, is identified as the good bacteria. It is very essential for healthy digestion and bowel function. Bifidobacterium bifidum is another good bacterium present in our colon.

According to Colon Health Handbook, your colon should have 85% acidophilus and 15% coliform bacteria.

How To Restore Good Bacteria

So how can we restore good bacteria in our colon?

  • Probiotic supplements are very effective in restoring good bacteria in the colon. These supplements contain live, friendly bacteria that help to improve the microbial balance in the colon.
  • Yogurt helps to create an acidic environment in the gut and this acidic environment is suitable for the growth of friendly bacteria like, acidophilus and bifidum.

By taking probiotic supplements and yogurt, you ensure the health of your colon. You should also take care to avoid things that cause harm to the bad bacteria. You should avoid taking antibiotics unnecessarily. Eat health and exercise regularly for your health. And yes, you can always go for colon cleansing to maintain your overall health.

What Exhibits High Levels of Progesterone to Cause PMS (Pre-menstrual Syndrome)?

Premenstrual syndrome is defined as a faulty function of the ovaries related to the women’s menstrual cycle. It effects a women’s physical and emotional state. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss what exhibits high levels of progesterone to cause PMS.

1. Medication

Clomiphene is one of many prescription medication which has been used in treating women with infertility problems by stimulating the ovulation and the production of eggs each month in the ovaries. It may contribute to a side effect of nervous tension for some women with PMS as resulting of high levels of progesterone produced.

2. Adrenal hyperplasia

Adrenal hyperplasia is an excessive or deficient production of sex hormones resulting in increasing the production of progesterone caused by abnormal function of adrenal gland or adrenal hyperplasia leading to symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome.

3. Overactive ovaries

For some reason, some women with pre-menstrual syndrome are found to have overactive ovaries. It may be caused by genetics passing through from generation to generation.

4. Exogenous factor

For some women taking the progesterone replacement therapy pill may see a higher levels of progesterone in the blood stream resulting in increasing the risk of pre-menstrual syndrome.

5. Emotional factor

Emotional stress increases the production of adrenaline hormone in the bloodstream leading to progesterone imbalance as resulting of progesterone being blocked by over production of adrenaline Therefore, women who are under constant stress are more likely to develop pre-menstrual syndrome caused by low levels of progesterone.

Fibroids – What To Eat When You Have A Uterine Fibroid

When you have fibroids, what to eat is an important consideration. Indeed, although dietary modification is not the only step you should take to help both alleviate your symptoms and bring about shrinkage, it is probably the single most effective step you can take.

Fibroids form due to a number of primary and secondary factors which interact with a woman’s unique genetic make up. There is no doubt that some women are simply more “prone” than others to this condition which explains why women with very similar life situations may display have very different experiences-some might have large fibroids but others, nothing at all.

There is so much information and advice out there about what constitutes a healthy diet and following the general principles of this is a good starting point. You should aim to eat organic foods wherever possible and base your diet around fresh fruits and vegetables, wholegrains, filtered water, small amounts of lean meats, beans, nuts and seeds. With fibroids, what to eat is important but so is what you should be avoiding. You should not eat processed foods or those with artificial additives. Sugar and refined carbohydrates are also best avoided, as are animal fats and trans fats. Avoiding dairy produce is also beneficial for most women and it goes without saying that you should not drink alcohol or smoke.

With fibroids, what to eat can vary depending on what you are trying to achieve, For example, if you experience heavy bleeding at the time of your menstrual period, you should eat plenty of iron-rich foods, such as spinach, kale, small amounts of lean beef, blackcurrants and lentils. For actual shrinkage, concentrate on leafy green vegetables and sprouting vegetables.

Of course changing your diet is only a small, albeit important part, of a system to shrink your fibroids. You will also need to undertake detoxification and cleansing protocols as well as looking at ways to manage stress.

If You Have Failed to Lose Weight – Try This

If you are overweight and have struggled to lose this excess body fat in the past along with feeling tired and lacking energy it may be that your metabolism has slowed down. If you have a history of low calorie diets and yo yo dieting this can cause your metabolic engine to slow down in an ancient ‘survival mode’ in an attempt to stop starvation.

Even very low fat, high carbohydrate or low protein diets can have the same effect along with chronic under eating and even excessive cardiovascular exercise. You are in fact teaching your body the exact opposite of what you want to achieve. You want to lose body fat but your body has now become extremely efficient at storing it and this makes future weight loss almost impossible.

It is ironic that most of the diet programs that claim to help you get rid of body fat end up making it harder for you in the long run as they use harsh metabolism decreasing diets that do the opposite of what is needed. They also almost never require proper exercise in the way of muscle building and maintaining exercise which keeps your metabolism from slowing when calories are reduced. Any wonder diets fail 95% of the time.

If you wish to reverse this situation, rebuild your metabolism and coax your body into giving up its fat stores you will need a new and different approach. First you will have to be consistent and make up your mind to ditch the yo yo dieting and exercise regime.

It is going to take the right combination of metabolism stimulating exercise and metabolism stimulating nutrition (not dieting) done consistently over a period of time.

This word consistent is important as nothing will undermine the boosting up of your metabolism like inconsistency. In fact, if you stop and start and skip meals and workouts often you will not even get off the ground.

If you have been on low calorie diets in the past along with inadequate proper exercise it is likely that you will have lost lean muscle tissue. This is where strength training exercise functions at its best. If done properly within just a few weeks that tissue can be rebuilt and give your fat burning machinery the kick start it needs.

Your muscle tissue is what drives your metabolism and strength training exercise is the only type of activity that will address this. Forget the walking, jogging or anything ‘cardio’ as this will not tone up the muscular system in the manner required to boost metabolism and get your body cranking again. Keep those ‘cardio’ activities as recreational activities which are part of an active lifestyle but never ever replace a proper exercise program with them.

After your metabolism is back up and running properly aided by your strength training program, it will take continued “stoking” of the metabolic furnace to keep it there. You will need to keep feeding it fuel or the fire will die down again. This means you need to overhaul your eating plan and forget starving and start feeding your body.

Your eating must support your exercise program so you have enough energy to put the required effort and intensity into the program for it to work. Eat every 2-3 hours which will give you between 5-7 meals each day. Make sure there is around 20 grams of protein in each one and the balance made up with raw and cooked vegetables. Try and ditch the processed food and start cooking from scratch with whole foods for best results.

The secret to eating this way is to prepare your meals the night before and take them with you wherever you go so there is no reason (excuse) to eat what you shouldn’t. Focus solely on eating what you should and there will be no room for eating what you shouldn’t.

The good news is, these same nutrition and training principles will work for you no matter how long you have been on the diet roller coaster. Work your muscles and feed your body it is that simple. Try this sensible healthy way to take off the fat and you will see it works.

Long Term Symptoms of Oral Yeast Infection

There are numerous long term symptoms of oral yeast infection that can have effect on your health and your daily living. These symptoms will directly effect you and your ability to function on a daily basis. You should never keep an infection, and should rid yourself of it as quickly as possible.

The long term symptoms of oral yeast infection vary from one person to the next, however, there are common ones that many people suffer from. Many of them include memory problems, the inability to focus, and forgetfulness. People also experience fatigue and tiredness on a regular basis. It has the ability to directly effect your energy level.

Knee, hip, and joint pain are also long term symptoms of oral yeast infection. People often experience a tongue that is covered in white bumps that are visible to other people. Lowered self esteem and depression are also things many people experience. Lowered sex drive and performance as well as painful sexual experiences are also experienced by people.

If you have thrush, the yeast in your body has become extremely overgrown. This happens when the Candida fungus in your body is able to grow out of control. It naturally lives in your lower intestines and begins to spread due to diet and other causes. If it gets to your mouth, it has been growing for some time in your body and needs to be taken care of. It is never to late to cure it, however, chances are good that it has been effecting you for some time now.

How To Manage Hepatitis B Emergence

Hepatitis B is an infectious disease caused by the virus of hepatitis B, a DNA virus whose natural host is human body. It is a known fact that this particular virus is very resistant to the conditions outside its host, which means this little living virus can survive outside its natural environment for a long time. They actually discovered it on the contaminated medical equipment, many months after the contamination, and this could be the transmission way, or at least one of them.

This is at least one hundred times less infectious than HIV and it presents itself with more viral particles in the infected blood. As opposed to the HIV, this virus can be transmitted through saliva also. This is a verified aspect of the matter; it has already been proven.

The hepatitis B is transmitted much faster than the HIV infection through sexual unprotected contact. It also has another very interesting as well as dangerous feature from this point of view. It can be transmitted through intimate family contact, especially when the living conditions are “crowded”. Aside from that, it can also be transmitted when in contact with biological liquids: blood, seminal liquid, vaginal secretions, and saliva.

There are four transmission mechanisms of this nasty infection. First, one is called vertical, when the mother passes the virus to the newborn. The second one is called horizontal and it happens between children, teenagers and young people or even adults. This usually happens through saliva or contaminated blood, which goes into the organism through superficial wounds and scratches. Parents, grandparents, older brothers, which are infected, they are all a potential horizontal source of infection.

Sexual transmission is made by normal or homosexual activity between a healthy and an infected individual. Parental transmission of the virus of the Hepatitis B is performed through blood as well as through contaminated blood products, which enter the organism of a healthy host through syringe needles, blood transfusions, hem dialysis, or even intravenous administered drugs.

All over the world, being in contact with contaminated blood exposes the doctors as well as the rest of the staff who work in hospitals and have direct contact with it. As much as exposed are the police, the paramedics, fire fighters, and military workers. They are exposed because of the nature of their work.

We must also keep in mind that there are over three million carriers of this virus all over the world. We must always take good care of the things, objects and people we encounter, even if we do not work in the fields such as the ones described above. Infected objects, such as needles could be very dangerous and they could be the ones transmitting the hepatitis B virus to a healthy body. In addition, we must educate children in this matter, so that they realize the risks of this disease.

Educating especially teenagers, which usually do not acknowledge and almost never comply, and not only them, but also all kinds of humans from all the fields of activity, will reduce the transmission of this disease all over the world.

Cholestatic Liver Disease

The term “cholestasis” literally means “standing still of bile.” When the flow of bile in your body is disrupted, anicteric cholestasis levels in the body will rise. Middle-aged women over the age of 40 are the ones who usually suffer from the chronic type of cholestatic liver disease. This type of disease is called “primary biliary cirrhosis.”

Diagnosis

About 90 percent of patients diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis are women over the age of 40. Women living in northern Europe tend to be more susceptible to this disease compared to women in other parts of the world. Women in Japan have the lowest rate of diagnosed cases of this disease.

The diagnosis of cholestatic liver disease is based on a combination of many findings and tests. Some of these factors include findings of cholestatic liver enzymes, a positive anti-mitochondrial antibody, and characteristic liver biopsy. The most common laboratory finding is the detection of elevated serum alkaline phosphates of liver origin. The presence of anti-mitochondrial antibody is the most characteristic laboratory finding in cholestatic liver disease. Over 95 percent of all who suffer from this disease will test positive for anti-mitochondrial antibody.

Signs and Symptoms

Fatigue is the most common symptom of this disorder. Seventy to eighty percent of all the patients suffering from this disease experience this symptom. However, fatigue is generally not an indication of the severity of this disorder. As the disorder progresses, other symptoms may arise, such as hypertension. As the disorder progresses even more, the ability to absorb fat-soluble vitamins will continue to decrease. As the disorder progresses further, autoimmune disorders will begin to develop. For example, a patient with this disease may begin to develop an autoimmune thyroid disease, as well as an inflammatory bowel disease once this disorder is left to progress.

Why a Cat Urinates Everywhere

Do you find your cat urinating on your bed? Or do you find your cat urinating on the carpet? It is a common problem you will face if you raise a cat. This article will explain you some factors that can make your cat urinate outside the litter box.

Here are some factors that can make cat urinate everywhere:

a. Medical problem

There are some diseases that can make your cat unable to urinate normally such as liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes mellitus, colitis, bacterial infection, calculi, trauma, tumors, kidney disease, hypocalcemia, pyometra, adrenal gland disease, etc.

There is nothing else you can do except taking your cat to the Veterinarian as soon as possible as the diseases explained above can kill your cat.

b. Box location problem

Watch carefully where you put the litter box. There are some reasons why cats won’t use the box:

*the box is located too close to their water and food.
*the box is located on the place where they don’t have privacy.
*the box is located too high so that they can’t reach it.
*you put the box to the place where cat can be ambushed by another cat.
*the box is dirty (for more info, cat is a very clean creature).

c. Stress

Stress can make your cat’s behaviour change suddenly. There are some factors that can make your cat stress:

*you raise a new pet.
*you have a new guest.
*or if you move to other house.

Thanks for reading my article about bad cat behaviour problem. See you on my next article.

Headache Nausea Can Be a Key to Treatment

Are you experiencing nausea along with your headaches? Then you must read this article to the very end because it contains valuable information about the the kind of headaches you may be suffering – and how your headaches can be treated. This is vitally important information because your headaches could be migraines – and you will definitely need the proper treatment.

Headaches coupled with nausea

You need to understand that if you’re experiencing headaches coupled with nausea, you need to discuss this with your health care provider. This is because he or she needs to know this in order to treat you properly. The fact is, if you’re experiencing nausea with your headaches, you may be experiencing migraines, which is one of the most painful type of headaches.

Help your healthcare provider help you

If you’re having nausea with your headaches, it’s important to see a health care provider. This could be the key to getting the correct diagnosis and treatment. The fact is, if you are suffering headaches coupled with nausea, you may be suffering from migraines, If this is the case, over-the -counter medication will probably do nothing to help you with your pain. And if you are suffering from migraines, you will most likely need a different type of medication – one that’s available only by prescription.

Many different medications

Migraine medications come in many forms that can help relieve your nausea. For example, if you experience nausea and vomiting when you have a migraine, the medications you must swallow could be the cause of your nausea. These medications not only upset your stomach but, even worse, you could lose the medication when you vomit which means you end up getting no relief at all.

Inhale or dissolve

If oral medications are causing your nausea, you can ask your healthcare provider about medications that come in the form of a nasal spray or ones that dissolve under your tongue. The nasal medications are sprayed into your nose at the onset of your headache. Just as important, they can actually help prevent the headache from becoming severe. In addition, you won’t have any medication in your stomach that might be causing your nausea. It is also possible to take oral pills that dissolve under the tongue. These are called sublingual medications. They help prevent nausea by releasing the medication into the bloodstream through the blood vessels under your tongue. Another option – if you experience nausea with your headaches – is to take medication in the form of an injection or shot. While the thought of needles may make you feel squeamish, this form of medication is fast acting and helps you avoid the extra nausea associated with some headache medications.

Tension-type headaches

Tension headaches are another type of headaches that can cause stomach nausea. This is especially true if the headache continues for a long period of time and the pain seems to increase. There are prescription medications that can often stop a tension-type headache and, as a result, stop the headache nause

Be sure to see your healthcare provider

You should definitely see a healthcare provider if you’re experiencing nausea with your headaches. He or she will diagnose your headache, rule out any other complications, and make sure you get the proper treatment. There are very few feelings worse than nausea. But you don’t have to suffer from it. All you need to do is get the correct treatment for your ailment.

Fish and Seafood Poisoning

In my previous article on shellfish and crustaceans I referred to instances of when seafood became contaminated once it was out of the sea. There are many forms of seafood poisoning and I would like to talk of one of the more problematic and undetectable forms of seafood poisoning that we encounter quite often.

In the field of food hygiene we must also look at the condition of food which has been caught in the wild. This includes the world’s fisheries industry. Wild sea food, particularly that which has been caught on or around coral reefs, is thought to be superior to sources which are grown by aquaculture technologies. Locus, red snapper, lobster and shrimp caught and served fresh from the coral reef are prized as delicacies.

All creatures that live on the coral reef are part of a food chain. Everybody is eaten by somebody else eventually. The food chain begins with single cell creatures such as plankton. Some forms of plankton emit a toxin called “ciguatoxin”. The reaction to this toxin in humans is called “ciguaterra”. (sig-ua-terra).

The plankton enters the food chain at the bottom end where it is eaten my small coral reef creatures. The small creatures are eaten by bigger ones until, finally we arrive at the sea creatures that we love to sea on our plates at the seafood restaurant.

It is important to stress that although the toxin is released into the flesh of the fish it has little or no effect upon them and they can continue to live out there lives and function quite well despite being infected by the toxin. The toxin tends to accumulate mostly in the liver, pancreas, gills and head but is also present in potentially problematic concentrations throughout the muscle tissue as well.

Cases of ciguatera are seen mostly where raw seafood flesh is served but it is important to stress that the toxin is not destroyed or neutralized by the cooking process nor is it destroyed by the powerful acid (HCl) which is present in our stomachs during the digestive process.

The reaction experienced by victims of ciguaterra include all or most of the classic allergic reaction symptoms. Sufferers may experience sweating, dizziness, nausea, fainting, tightness of breath, burning of the mouth, itchiness, rashes, blurring of the vision and other symptoms.

This may sound frightening but although highly unpleasant, Ciguaterra is very rarely fatal, especially if the victim arrives promptly to a place where he or she can receive modern medical treatment. Patients usually make a full recover within three to five days.

Some cases can be fatal but these cases are usually where people have severe medical conditions or other sensitivities that can be sparked off in conjunction with the symptoms of Ciguaterra.

The only way to protect yourself is never to eat seafood in restaurants in locations that you have no prior knowledge of. Prefer to eat fish species from the open sea or freshwater sources. Eat or buy seafood from reputable businesses that have no previously reported incidences of Ciguaterra.

Steroid-Based Medications and Stomach Problems

We recently received a call from a concerned mother telling us that after her son, who suffers from asthma, was put on the steroid-based medication Perdisone, and then the following day in school began vomiting violently and was sent home. Unfortunately, this is not an entirely uncommon occurrence.

Steroids can have harmful effects on the stomach. Simply put, steroids weaken the lining of the stomach wall. This allows the gastric acid to erode the walls of the stomach thus leading to gastritis and possibly even ulcers. Abdominal pain and discomfort are among the most common clinical consequences of gastritis, gastric wall erosions and gastric ulcers. Such symptoms may last days and even weeks if not treated appropriately and promptly.

Medications that reduce gastric acid have been proven to be the most effective way to promote gastric wall healing and provide symptomatic relief. Acid blocking medications may be easily obtained over the counter at any pharmacy or supermarket or obtained by prescription from your physician. Examples of such medications are: Prilosec, Zantac, and Pepcid.

Although they have many side effects, steroids are often necessary and can even be life saving in certain circumstances. They are often a crucial component in the treatment of diseases such as asthma, especially in children and the use of such medications can not be simply stopped. However, all efforts must be made by the caring physician to decrease the need for and stop the use of steroids as fast as possible, assuming that it is done safely.

The concomitant administration of acid blocking medications is often prudent and will afford the patient adequate gastric protection. Some clinical signs and symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract to be aware of when taking steroids are as follows: Abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, dark stools or bleeding. Prompt consultation with a physician must be obtained if these symptoms are encountered.

Endoscopy is a very effective tool that may be used to obtain an accurate diagnosis of disease processes such as gastric ulcers or gastritis. An endoscopy in a young child, if performed appropriately and with competence, is a safe and painless procedure. It is rare to feel anything other than mild nausea (side effect of the anesthetics) and mild abdominal bloating (air that is insufflated during the procedure). That being said, it’s usually a quick and simple procedure. An endoscopy is not only diagnostic, but may also be therapeutic, that is, specific treatments may be administered during the procedure.

Normally, the discontinuation of steroids is enough to afford symptomatic relief in patients. Symptoms of abdominal pain usually subside within a few days, but may last for up to a few weeks. Early recognition of the symptoms as well as the prompt treatment with appropriate medications is sufficient to prevent dangerous clinical outcomes. Also we must always remember the importance and effectiveness of a well balanced diet as well as adequate exercise and rest.

Low Stomach Acid and Cancer?

Approximately 40% of adults over the age of 40 are afflicted with low stomach acid. It’s not that hard to tell whether you have it or not. Here are some questions to ask yourself and if you find yourself answering “yes” to more than a few then chances are you have low stomach acid and you’ll need to start supplementing with HCL tablets with pepsin to kick start your stomach into proper acid production once again.

  • After eating a meal are you gassy or bloated?
  • Do you have problems with GERD (Acid Reflux)?
  • If you stick your tongue out and look at it in the mirror do you see a thin white film on it?
  • Do you often have bad breath?
  • Are you ever constipated?
  • Do you often have diarrhea?
  • Do you find it very difficult to lose weight?
  • Do you have acne, eczema or other skin problems?
  • Do you have IBS like symptoms?

Chances are that if you’re answering ‘yes’ to more than two of these questions there is a good chance that you have low stomach acid. And here’s the really scary part – all the times you Tums, Nexium and antacids to “calm your stomach” you just further deplete the levels of stomach acid you have.

The less acid your stomach has the more digestive problems you’re going to have. Without proper levels of stomach acid not only is your food not digested but the nutrients you need from the food aren’t properly absorbed into your body.

How important is it to make sure we have the right levels of stomach acid?

According to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute low stomach acid leads to bacteria over growth in our intestines (which in turns leads to gas, burping, bloating, GERD etc.) and also possibly to cancer. If you don’t want to read the whole article at HHMI here’s the relevant snippet:

Helicobacter pylori has received much attention as thecause of stomach ulcers, but new research by scientists at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) at the University of Michigan shows that many other types of bacteria can cause the gastritis and ulcers that can ultimately lead to cancer.

And the idea that that antacids and PPI’s (Proton Pump Inhibitors) that are designed to reduce our levels of stomach acid are doing us good is also debunked in the article here:

Merchant said that her group’s studies showing that omeprazole promotes bacterial overgrowth suggest that physicians should prescribe this class of drugs with caution. Proton pump inhibitors include drugs marketed under the trade names Prilosec┬« and Prevacid┬«.

And it just isn’t the medical and scientific community that is figuring out the importance of maintaining good stomach acid. Apple Cider Vinegar (which is highly concentrated in acetic acid) and acidic pickle juice have long been used as home remedies for stomach ailments for several decades now.

They’re popularly recommended on natural health forums such as CureZone and EarthClinic and have an excellent reputation. The reason is quite simple – they work!

These two home remedies are highly concentrated in acid and once ingested they supplement your stomach’s acid levels and aid in the digestion process.

What Causes Acid Reflux?

Though the root causes are often unclear, perhaps the most prevalent acid reflux cause is a poor diet. Acid reflux occurs during digestion, when the stomach churns up acid or refluxes it into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat. So if you eat too many highly acidic foods like tomato sauces and/or fatty, fried foods, the stomach has to process an overabundance of acid. Too much acid can push back through a valve between the stomach and the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Acid reflux culprits include but are not limited to tomato based sauces, fried and fatty foods, chocolate, alcohol, citrus fruits, peppers, and caffeinated beverages.

Along the same lines as diet, overeating also causes reflux. When you overeat, the stomach can’t keep up with the demand to process all the acids. So food gets backed up, and digestive acids infiltrate the esophageal valve to cause that unpleasant burning feeling centered in the chest.

Also diet-related, another acid reflux cause is being overweight. There is a clear correlation between being overweight and a notable increase in the occurrence of acid reflux. Many believe this is because the extra weight puts more pressure on the stomach and esophagus. This pressure has been known to open the lower esophageal sphincter (esophagus valve), when the valve should be closed. This allows acid to escape into the esophagus.

Other factors that create a predisposition for acid reflux include smoking, use of alcohol, food allergies, certain medications, and lying down after meals. As you can tell, most of these factors can be overcome by practicing some behavioral modifications. In fact, in many cases of recurrent acid reflux, lifestyle changes are all that is necessary in preventing heartburn from becoming a chronic disease. Remember to consult a physician before embarking on any treatment strategy.

Acid Reflux – How To Use Baking Soda For Acid Reflux

One of the oldest remedies for acid reflux is using baking soda. The thought of using baking soda for acid reflux may turn many people off and that’s understandable considering it’s used for many other applications.

The simple fact is, used correctly, it can help neutralize the bane of heartburn and acid reflux in acid.

How Does Baking Soda Work?

In a nutshell, baking soda neutralizes the excessive acid within the stomach. Acid rises up through the esophagus presenting a very uncomfortable feeling to those who experience it. Chronic sufferers especially can literally spend days feeling the ill effects of an attack.

Sodium bicarbonate goes to work in the stomach to regulate the flow of acid and neutralize it. It’s a very simple method and the truth is, many will pass it over as a serious relief method simply because baking soda is such a common item in most people’s homes.

How Much Should You Use?

You’ve still got to be careful when using baking soda for acid reflux. Too much and you will be asking for trouble. Your doctor should be consulted initially. The general rule of thumb is about a half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of baking soda to 1-3 ounces of water.

Just stir or swirl the mixture around so it dissolves and swallow it. You may need to wait for several minutes but what you’re looking for is that welcoming belch which feels like a ton of pressure has just been released. (Might be a good idea to use it when no one else is around).

Belching after consuming baking soda for acid reflux is a good sign and it’s just gas being released following the neutralization of the stomach acid. It may not be pretty but to someone suffering constant attacks, it’s one of the greatest sounds in the world!

Using baking soda for acid reflux should only be seen as a temporary measure if you are a chronic sufferer. Your doctor is still your best go to person because if your condition is chronic and you’re banking on temporary relief methods all the time, then you are just treating the symptom and not the problem.

What Are The Most Common Cardiovascular Disease Causes?

For many individuals knowing how to manage and reduce cardiovascular disease causes defines much of how they lead their lives. Others choose to travel down the road of cardiovascular disease causes blindly until that pivotal moment when a heart attack or stroke changes their lives forever.

It is safe to say that in United States the trend is definitely moving in the direction of learning out cardiovascular disease causes before they happen and taking heart healthy steps to make sure they don’t just become another statistic of heart disease or stroke.

The many different faces of cardiovascular disease

There are many different forms of cardiovascular disease. This list includes some names you will recognize such as high blood pressure, angina, coronary arrhythmia, atherosclerosis, heart attack, and coronary artery disease along with some other not so familiar names such as myocarditis and pericarditis.

But despite the many different names in most cases cardiovascular disease causes revolve around either/or a weakened heart muscle or a blockage which limits blood supply to the heart which is in most cases, arterial plaque.

While a weakened heart, or a weakening heart, is a natural process that occurs with age arterial plaque deposits in most instances is not and is brought about by a number of common cardiovascular risk factors. Additionally, when our coronary arteries are partially blocked it puts extra pressure on our heart causes it to be overworked and wear out long before its time.

So it just makes sense that every person looking to live as long and as healthy a life as possible would want find out ways to keep their heart strong as long as possible and their arteries as clear as possible. Eliminating cardiovascular disease causes is paramount to achieving these goals. Now, why don’t we look at a handful of cardiovascular disease causes that have over time proven to be the most troublesome.

Causes

*Smoking: Smoking is right a top of the list of cardiovascular disease causes with smokers being from three to four times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke. Smoking has been shown to raise bad cholesterol (LDL), lower good cholesterol (HDL), damage the interior lining of the arteries, and cause the arteries constrict, leaving less room for blood flow.

*High cholesterol: Cholesterol molecules are the building blocks for arterial plaque. By keeping your bad blood cholesterol low, under 100 milligrams for each deciliter of blood, and your good cholesterol (HDL) over 55 milligrams for each deciliter of blood, you will be taking away the primary component needed for arterial blockage, and ultimately hardening of the arteries.

*Obesity kills: Obesity puts excess pressure on heart causing it to have to consistently work harder than it should. Obesity also raises arterial clogging cholesterol levels along with dangerous triglycerides. When you add it all up all of the sudden you have a formula for cardiovascular disaster.

*Inactivity: Would you believe that about 40 percent of heart attack victims are considered inactive? Well, this is indeed the case. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minute of daily doctor approved daily exercise but goes on to point out that even 10 minutes a day will help.

*Other: Other cardiovascular disease causes are high blood pressure, diabetes, and homocysteines. While you probably are very familiar with diabetes and high blood pressure you may not have heard of homocysteines. So in winding this article up about the most common cardiovascular disease causes I will give you a brief description that you can use to find out more.

Homocysteines are amino acids produced when protein is digested. It is thought that these dangerous amino acids damage the interior lining of the arteries thus encouraging the formation of arterial plaque deposits. The good news is that by simply eating a balanced diet high in vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid you can neutralize these dangerous amino acids.
