Colon health is directly related to the presence of friendly bacteria. Colon is our large intestine. It is located at the end of our digestive tract. It is five and a half feet long and two and a half inches in diameter.   • Sudden change of diet, like when you travel abroad, can also lead to dysbiosis.

Good Bacteria

By restoring good bacteria you will be able to get the balance back. But what constitutes beneficial bacteria? Lactobacillus Acidophilus, commonly referred to as acidophilus, is identified as the good bacteria. It is very essential for healthy digestion and bowel function. Bifidobacterium bifidum is another good bacterium present in our colon.

Cholestatic Liver Disease

The term “cholestasis” literally means “standing still of bile.” When the flow of bile in your body is disrupted, anicteric cholestasis levels in the body will rise. Middle-aged women over the age of 40 are the ones who usually suffer from the chronic type of cholestatic liver disease. This type of disease is called “primary biliary cirrhosis.”


About 90 percent of patients diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis are women over the age of 40. Women living in northern Europe tend to be more susceptible to this disease compared to women in other parts of the world. Women in Japan have the lowest rate of diagnosed cases of this disease.

The diagnosis of cholestatic liver disease is based on a combination of many findings and tests. Some of these factors include findings of cholestatic liver enzymes, a positive anti-mitochondrial antibody, and characteristic liver biopsy. The most common laboratory finding is the detection of elevated serum alkaline phosphates of liver origin. The presence of anti-mitochondrial antibody is the most characteristic laboratory finding in cholestatic liver disease. Over 95 percent of all who suffer from this disease will test positive for anti-mitochondrial antibody.

Signs and Symptoms

Fatigue is the most common symptom of this disorder. Seventy to eighty percent of all the patients suffering from this disease experience this symptom. However, fatigue is generally not an indication of the severity of this disorder. As the disorder progresses, other symptoms may arise, such as hypertension. As the disorder progresses even more, the ability to absorb fat-soluble vitamins will continue to decrease. As the disorder progresses further, autoimmune disorders will begin to develop. Fish and Seafood Poisoning

In my previous article on shellfish and crustaceans I referred to instances of when seafood became contaminated once it was out of the sea. There are many forms of seafood poisoning and I would like to talk of one of the more problematic and undetectable forms of seafood poisoning that we encounter quite often.

In the field of food hygiene we must also look at the condition of food which has been caught in the wild. This includes the world’s fisheries industry. Wild sea food, particularly that which has been caught on or around coral reefs, is thought to be superior to sources which are grown by aquaculture technologies. Locus, red snapper, lobster and shrimp caught and served fresh from the coral reef are prized as delicacies.

All creatures that live on the coral reef are part of a food chain. Everybody is eaten by somebody else eventually. The food chain begins with single cell creatures such as plankton. Some forms of plankton emit a toxin called “ciguatoxin”. The reaction to this toxin in humans is called “ciguaterra”. (sig-ua-terra).

The plankton enters the food chain at the bottom end where it is eaten my small coral reef creatures. The small creatures are eaten by bigger ones until, finally we arrive at the sea creatures that we love to sea on our plates at the seafood restaurant.

It is important to stress that although the toxin is released into the flesh of the fish it has little or no effect upon them and they can continue to live out there lives and function quite well despite being infected by the toxin. The toxin tends to accumulate mostly in the liver, pancreas, gills and head but is also present in potentially problematic concentrations throughout the muscle tissue as well.

Cases of ciguatera are seen mostly where raw seafood flesh is served but it is important to stress that the toxin is not destroyed or neutralized by the cooking process nor is it destroyed by the powerful acid (HCl) which is present in our stomachs during the digestive process.

The reaction experienced by victims of ciguaterra include all or most of the classic allergic reaction symptoms. Sufferers may experience sweating, dizziness, nausea, fainting, tightness of breath, burning of the mouth, itchiness, rashes, blurring of the vision and other symptoms.

This may sound frightening but although highly unpleasant, Ciguaterra is very rarely fatal, especially if the victim arrives promptly to a place where he or she can receive modern medical treatment. Patients usually make a full recover within three to five days.

Some cases can be fatal but these cases are usually where people have severe medical conditions or other sensitivities that can be sparked off in conjunction with the symptoms of Ciguaterra.

The only way to protect yourself is never to eat seafood in restaurants in locations that you have no prior knowledge of. Prefer to eat fish species from the open sea or freshwater sources. Eat or buy seafood from reputable businesses that have no previously reported incidences of Ciguaterra.

Steroid-Based Medications and Stomach Problems

We recently received a call from a concerned mother telling us that after her son, who suffers from asthma, was put on the steroid-based medication Perdisone, and then the following day in school began vomiting violently and was sent home. Unfortunately, this is not an entirely uncommon occurrence.

Steroids can have harmful effects on the stomach. Simply put, steroids weaken the lining of the stomach wall. This allows the gastric acid to erode the walls of the stomach thus leading to gastritis and possibly even ulcers. Abdominal pain and discomfort are among the most common clinical consequences of gastritis, gastric wall erosions and gastric ulcers. Such symptoms may last days and even weeks if not treated appropriately and promptly.

Medications that reduce gastric acid have been proven to be the most effective way to promote gastric wall healing and provide symptomatic relief. Acid blocking medications may be easily obtained over the counter at any pharmacy or supermarket or obtained by prescription from your physician. Examples of such medications are: Prilosec, Zantac, and Pepcid.

Although they have many side effects, steroids are often necessary and can even be life saving in certain circumstances. They are often a crucial component in the treatment of diseases such as asthma, especially in children and the use of such medications can not be simply stopped. However, all efforts must be made by the caring physician to decrease the need for and stop the use of steroids as fast as possible, assuming that it is done safely.

The concomitant administration of acid blocking medications is often prudent and will afford the patient adequate gastric protection. Some clinical signs and symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract to be aware of when taking steroids are as follows: Abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, dark stools or bleeding. Prompt consultation with a physician must be obtained if these symptoms are encountered.

Endoscopy is a very effective tool that may be used to obtain an accurate diagnosis of disease processes such as gastric ulcers or gastritis. An endoscopy in a young child, if performed appropriately and with competence, is a safe and painless procedure. It is rare to feel anything other than mild nausea (side effect of the anesthetics) and mild abdominal bloating (air that is insufflated during the procedure). That being said, it’s usually a quick and simple procedure. An endoscopy is not only diagnostic, but may also be therapeutic, that is, specific treatments may be administered during the procedure.

Normally, the discontinuation of steroids is enough to afford symptomatic relief in patients. Symptoms of abdominal pain usually subside within a few days, but may last for up to a few weeks. Early recognition of the symptoms as well as the prompt treatment with appropriate medications is sufficient to prevent dangerous clinical outcomes. Also we must always remember the importance and effectiveness of a well balanced diet as well as adequate exercise and rest.

Low Stomach Acid and Cancer?

Approximately 40% of adults over the age of 40 are afflicted with low stomach acid. It’s not that hard to tell whether you have it or not. Chances are that if you’re answering ‘yes’ to more than two of these questions there is a good chance that you have low stomach acid. And here’s the really scary part – all the times you Tums, Nexium and antacids to “calm your stomach” you just further deplete the levels of stomach acid you have.

The less acid your stomach has the more digestive problems you’re going to have. Without proper levels of stomach acid not only is your food not digested but the nutrients you need from the food aren’t properly absorbed into your body.

How important is it to make sure we have the right levels of stomach acid?

According to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute low stomach acid leads to bacteria over growth in our intestines (which in turns leads to gas, burping, bloating, GERD etc.) and also possibly to cancer. If you don’t want to read the whole article at HHMI here’s the relevant snippet:

And it just isn’t the medical and scientific community that is figuring out the importance of maintaining good stomach acid. Apple Cider Vinegar (which is highly concentrated in acetic acid) and acidic pickle juice have long been used as home remedies for stomach ailments for several decades now.

They’re popularly recommended on natural health forums such as CureZone and EarthClinic and have an excellent reputation. The reason is quite simple – they work!

What Causes Acid Reflux?
