Nearsightedness, Farsightedness and Astigmatism

In order to understand nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, it is necessary to examine the similarities between the human eye and a camera. Both the camera and the human eye have three essential features: 1. A light-sensitive substance — in the camera, this is the film; in the human eye, it is the retina. 2. An opening to allow light to enter — in the camera, this is the aperture; in the human eye, it is the pupil. 3. A lens system to focus the light rays onto the film or retina. It is the lens system that is responsible for producing clear images of near objects and far objects.

The lens system of the human eye actually has four components — the cornea, the aqueous humor, the crystalline lens, and the vitreous humor. All four of these components help to focus the light rays onto the retina. The light rays entering the eye must be bent inward so that they can form a clear image on the retina. The first component of the lens system that the incoming light rays pass through is the cornea. The cornea is the transparent structure located in front of the iris (the colored ring in the eye with the pupil in its center). The cornea actually causes the majority of the bending of the light rays.

The crystalline lens of the eye is located directly behind the iris. The aqueous humor is a watery fluid located between the cornea and the lens. The vitreous humor is a very viscous fluid located between the lens and the retina. All three of these components of the lens system contribute to the bending of the light rays, but together they do not cause as much bending as the cornea does. The contribution of the lens is extremely important because, while the amount of bending accomplished by the cornea, the aqueous humor, and the vitreous humor does not change, the amount of bending caused by the lens can be varied.

The crystalline lens of the eye has a biconvex shape — a disc which is thicker in the middle and thinner at the periphery. Extending outward from the periphery of the lens are suspensory ligament fibers, which attach the lens to a ring-shaped muscle called the ciliary muscle. The ciliary muscle can affect the shape of the lens. When the ciliary muscle is relaxed, it forms a large ring. Under these conditions, the fibers of the suspensory ligament pull the edges of the lens outward. This causes the thickness in the middle part of the lens to be less than it could be. If the ciliary muscle were to contract, it would form a somewhat smaller ring. When this happens, the outward pull on the lens is less than before. As a result, the middle part of the lens becomes thicker. The more the ciliary muscle contracts, the thicker the middle of the lens becomes.

The ability of the eye to vary the thickness of the crystalline lens is essential in order for the eye to see clearly both near objects and far objects. In order to form a clear image on the retina, the light rays coming from a near object must be bent more than the light rays coming from a far object. The thicker the middle of the lens, the more the lens bends the light rays. Therefore, whenever the eye focuses on a near object, the ciliary muscle contracts and forms a smaller ring in order to allow the middle of the lens to become thicker. But when the eye focuses on a far object, the ciliary muscle relaxes and forms a larger ring, thus causing the suspensory ligament fibers to pull the edges of the lens outward. As a result, the middle of the lens is less thick.

Nearsightedness (myopia) can be caused by either an eyeball that is too long or a lens that is too thick. In either of these conditions, the light rays coming in from a near object can still form a clear image on the retina. The light rays from a far object could form a clear image at some point in front of the retina. But by the time those light rays actually reach the retina, the image is blurred. In order to correct nearsightedness, a biconcave lens is placed in front of the eye. A biconcave lens is a disc which is thinner in the middle and thicker at the periphery. Such a lens bends the incoming light rays outward before they reach the components of the lens system of the eye. After being bent inward by the lens system of the eye, the light rays will form a clear image on the retina.

Farsightedness (hyperopia) can be caused by either an eyeball that is too short or a lens that is not thick enough. In either of these conditions, the light rays coming in from a far object can still form a clear image on the retina. The light rays from a near object would form a clear image behind the retina. But, of course, they never reach that point; the image is still blurry when it reaches the retina. In order to correct farsightedness, a biconvex lens is placed in front of the eye. This lens bends the incoming light rays inward before they reach the components of the lens system of the eye. After the lens system of the eye bends them inward still more, the light rays form a clear image on the retina.

An astigmatism is a defect in the shape of either the cornea or the crystalline lens of the eye. The cornea and the lens should have exactly the same curvature in all directions. If there is an astigmatism, the curvature is not the same in all directions. To understand the difference, visualize the surface of a beach ball. It has the same curvature in all directions. Now visualize the surface of a football. It does not have the same curvature in all directions. When an astigmatism is present, the individual incoming light rays are bent by different amounts. Therefore there is no point where all light rays come into focus to form a clear image on the retina. In order to correct an astigmatism, a lens is designed to have an astigmatism which is exactly the opposite of the astigmatism of the eye. When such a lens is placed in front of the eye, it counteracts the astigmatism of the eye.

Presbyopia is a loss of near vision which occurs as people age. It is the result of loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens of the eye. Elasticity is the ability of a structure to spontaneously resume its original shape after it has been stretched out of shape. Elasticity is what allows the lens to thicken in the middle when it is no longer being pulled outward at the periphery. As the lens ages, its ability to thicken decreases. Since near vision requires a thicker lens, near vision is lost.

High Myopia – What Causes Myopia?

Before we get into it, I’d like to clarify something right off the bat… if you have difficulties in dealing with the truth if it’s uncomfortable, you might as well stop reading now. If you, on the other hand, are dying to find out where high myopia comes from, and especially what you can do about it, so that it stops getting worse and worse every eye exam, you are in the right place.

The truth can be confronting at times and even more so when the “authorities” in the field hiding it from us, either out of ignorance, or out of profit thinking.

High Myopia & The Ophthalmic Industry

You see, when you go to an optometrist or eye surgeon and ask for the reason of your high myopia, they usually tell you that your lens is shaped too steeply, so you need to wear glasses or undertake surgery. So, I’m asking, should we trust them blindly, just because they studied for many years, or should we maybe get a second opinion?

The scholars of this world have believed for centuries what the catholic church wanted us to believe is true, so they were wrong, even though they were the most educated. Not because they were bad people, but because it didn’t suit the catholic church and it’s interests to listen to science.

Theories About The Causes Of Myopia

Unfortunately the ophthalmic industry, just like the catholic church a couple of centuries back, has interests that don’t encourage them to teach students the truth. At universities they still teach a theory about eye problems that was established by German physicist Hermann Helmholtz, rather than the much more accurate and modern theory of one of their own, ophthalmologist Dr William Bates.

So the reason why your eyes get worse and worse with glasses over the years has to do with the whole industry subscribing to the wrong theory. If they were right and glasses, contacts, or eye surgery would truly improve your vision and not just function as a crutch, wouldn’t you get weaker and weaker glasses prescribed, until they are gone?

Well, I haven’t heard that in a while…

True Causes For High Myopia

You have to understand that there are multiple reasons for high myopia. Some are physiological, and many are psychological. The physiological reasons are not the shape of the lens. That’s just the symptom of all the underlying reasons.

High myopia is often a result of bad posture, which restricts proper blood circulation throughout the body, and therefore doesn’t deliver appropriate amounts of oxygen and nutrients to the eye muscles. Together with already existing strain on the eye muscles that determine the shape of the eyeball, the lack of oxygen increases the tightness and strains the muscles even more.

The strain on these eye muscles flattens out eyeball, extending it like a zoom on a photo camera, and because the eyeball is full of liquid, it changes the shape of the lens. In other words, the lens gets pushed out, bends more than it should, and therefore is shaped more steeply. The more tension on the eye muscles, the more the eyeball is extended, and in turn the more myopia you get.

Treatments For High Myopia

High myopia can only be treated by getting rid of the tension in the eye muscles. To do so successfully and long-term you have to find out where the tension comes from, ie you have to determine the underlying causes for myopia. You can do that by yourself, totally naturally, you just need to become aware of how to do it.

Glasses, on the other hand, will never release the tension of the eye muscles, on the contrary, over time they will increase it, and that’s why you need stronger glasses.

Sadly, if you ask your optometrist or eye surgeon about the eye muscles and the influence on the shape of the lens they will tell you that it’s not true. They think that only one muscle around the lens is responsible for its shape. So if you ask, and you get that answer, ask them why others improve their vision naturally with natural vision correction methods (which are supposedly shenanigans and cost only a hundred bucks one time) and need weaker and weaker glasses until they are gone, but you, using the “correct” approach, get more high myopia and need stronger and stronger glasses (and spend a hundred dollars or more a year!).

You’ll be surprise how much they’ll stutter on mumble something that doesn’t make sense…

Looking For Dr House: Finding A Diagnostician, Part I


So, I wanted to find House, MD (the king of diagnostic physicians on TV) in my local area. I research online to find out there is no Diagnostic Specialty. Although this seems ludicrous, I continue. My search leads me to find that most doctors believe they are diagnosticians. And they are, to some extent. Most doctors will take a history, declare that you have a cold or a bruise or a pain or worse and send you to a local specialist in the region/system of your body that is affected.

This redirection to specialists doesn’t speak to finding a doctor with diagnostic ability. Only that you are being directed to someone else whose credentials you don’t have. Shouldn’t each doctor have a diagnostic rating, if the medical system doesn’t include this as a specialty? How about a rating on a scale of 1 to 10 for level of diagnostic skill set? A peer-rated system would work well, alongside a customer rated system. Delving, deducing, concluding and having the ability to integrate and pull from vast knowledge in infection, degeneration, heredity, mental and environmental health require a special skill. So, why not have a separate specialization and definitive certification in Diagnostic Medicine? If we wait a few years, for political correctness, Internal Medicine will probably be called Diagnostic Medicine with no change in requirements.


On this search, we must start out by putting roles into perspective. WE, THE PATIENTS, are the employer, by hiring the doctor. Unfortunately, the demand for competence and diagnostic skill is higher than the supply. So, we forget our roles, for the most part, and consider ourselves lucky when the employee allows us to hire her/him. Bottom line: when we are in need of doctoring, our perspective changes and we lose focus.

Even though we usually forget, we, in the role of employer, can monitor, direct and impact the behavior of the doctor, in the role of employee, to some extent. True, each doctor delivers service in her/his own way and has the right to do so. But, we have the right to ask questions, extend our time of service if we need it, be satisfied that we have been well attended to and terminate employment of the doctor, if we are not satisfied. Hint: talk to the doctor, and don’t be shy. Doctors like to clarify.

In many cases, although doctors have taken an oath of service, they may feel the need to act pompous and ego-filled. This may be a result of their wanting to wear on their sleeve the blood, sweat, tears and coin they expended to complete medical school. It happens. It’s a natural occurrence when you learn a great deal that the pride and the skill can leak out arrogantly. It’s bad manners; it’s not always; it’s human and what’s a little insecurity among fellow humans who save lives? Bottom line, doctors, usually, do not think of themselves as YOUR employee or YOUR servant.

Because of caseloads, rising malpractice insurance costs, “allowable amount” cuts from insurance companies, increased sickness; doctors, typically, spend less time their patients because their roster has grown along with expense. Typical consumers do not pay for “exclusive” care. The concierge doctor set-up is a great option, resulting from an overstock of patients or from consumers’ dissatisfaction with five-minute-only appointments with doctors. Choosing to pay double or ten times the fee for the security of a 20-, 30- or 60-minute appointment is part of our free enterprise system. Long live it!


We are told to research internists, that they are the closest thing to a diagnostician. But should we have to become customers before we do our research or in order to do our research? Should we have to pay to interview our employee? Should we have to purchase a service we know nothing about? Shouldn’t we have open online access to a central, non-fee based doctor information system where we can find all the credentials on one page, or a spec sheet, like the MSDS, (materials safety data sheet) for manufacturing?

Let’s go back to my term “doctor.” I have been using this term to mean anyone who does doctoring. I am not using the words “anyone who practices medicine” because I don’t subscribe to the word “practice,” in this usage. I want someone who already has the knowledge, not someone who needs to practice to get the knowledge.

Yes, we learn by experience, but doctors must be doing, not practicing, if I have the choice. I’m the first one to say that you can receive guru care from someone with less or different training from the doctor who got the best grades or went to the best medical school. The truth is that training dearly impacts the student, which means that someone with less formal education but passion and a brilliant teacher, can result in becoming a better-skilled doctor than the straight A-student with no passion who memorizes, so long as exams are passed and a skill test is administered.

So why are these credentials left to our research and not listed, as a general rule? Is it because, at any time, a patient can complain, and a doctor would rather have no credentials or reviews, than deal with negative reviews?

We should have full access to the primary medical school and board certification expiration date of all doctors who hang a physical or internet shingle. Strangely, these data are NOT commonly offered. Is it fear of judgment? Or is it to create a demand for this information so that service associations, often owned by doctors, can charge for the gathering of the most up-to-date information?

Should doctor information be mandatory, like nutritional labels? And, what about the diagnostic rating system? I believe in disclosing ingredients as I believe in disclosing who is a great diagnostician and what method of measurement was used to decide.

Finding a diagnostician is not easy. We have briefly touched upon the concepts of credentials, ratings, med schools, research. These issues are prerequisites to the search. It is not enough to place a suffix after your name without credentialing your suffix. If that, we could all emulate Frank AbagnaIe, Jr., who impersonated a doctor (whose life was played by Leo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can).

First Aid for Chemical Spill Injuries

First Aid Trainers all know how to teach the first aid basics and anyone with a hint of common sense would be able to adapt their treatment according to the casualty and the situation. After all, that is exactly what First Aid is, the absolute first treatment that a casualty receives, generally before they are handed over to a medical professional for full and specialised treatment.

Practising First Aider Trainers will most likely agree that first aid treatments are prioritised in order of breathing, bleeding, breaks, burns; however, in the situation of dealing with a chemical spill incident, the burns treatment will most likely be prioritised, with a high risk of breathing failure to follow.

Chemicals are generically categorised into acids and alkalis. Alkalis burn deeper than acids, however, the severity of a chemical spill burn is related to a number of factors such as the pH, concentration, length of contact time, volume and physical form of the chemical.

Prompt burns irrigation is absolutely essential. However, it is the safe approach to a spill site that must remain the absolute priority to a First Aider. The safe approach should be in conjunction with permission or handover of the casualty from a Scene Manager. The site of the incident and the nature of the chemical spillage may influence a First Aider’s pre-treatment actions. These may include decontaminating the casualty, wearing PPE or even that the First Aider can only guide the casualty to a clean area where they can instruct them on how to self-treat.

With a safe, efficient and effective on-site Spill Team alongside a competent Incident Controller and Scene Manager, the First Aider should be able to commence irrigation of both acid and alkali exposures within several minutes. Such swift action will lead to an immediate decrease in the chemical pH, consequently it will begin to cool the skin and significantly reduce the extent of injury. It has been previously been documented that burns irrigated within ten minutes have a five-fold decrease in full-thickness injury and a two-fold decrease in length of hospital stay.

In addition to burns injuries, casualties of chemical spill injuries may experience difficulties breathing. Such difficulties may be displayed through inhalation and choking problems. Competent and skilled First Aiders are usually trained to follow a DRAB or similar procedure. Once they have checked the scene for Danger, they will proceed to evaluate the Response, Airway and Breathing of a casualty. This four-part procedure can become second nature to the point that a First Aider feels compelled to commence checks straight away.

In the event of a chemical spill, a First Aider must be aware that their casualty may be highly contaminated. It is imperative that they do not begin treatment until they have received permission to do so, or, that the casualty has been handed over by a Scene Manager. At this time, even if dealing with a decontaminated casualty, the First Aider may choose to make a number of safe adaptations such as omitting CPR breaths or only moving the casualty when wearing non-corrosive PPE. If PPE is not available to the First Aider, they may choose to adapt a make-shift recovery position without using the hands.

With all of the information and training in the world, it remains a fact that perfect practice makes perfect. A First Aider who has the possibility of dealing with casualties involved in chemical spills should be practising their skills and procedures in context. First Aiders should be practising accessing and using site treatment areas, equipment; regularly practising using emergency communication methods and regularly practising working within the emergency response team with formal roles and responsibilities. It is only with regular practice that an action can become near perfect and it is only with perfect practice that an action can become perfect.
