Cushings Disease In Dogs: How To Treat It Naturally

Cushings disease in dogs is a very common, yet very misunderstood canine health disorder. In this article I will explain what Cushings disease is, the causes, the common clinical signs, and what tests are best to diagnose it. Then you’ll see the most important conventional and holistic options used to treat Cushings.

Cushings disease is an overproduction of a hormone (cortisol) which produces the signs of excessive drinking and urinating; the veterinary term is hyperadrenocorticism. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal gland, and is usually released during times of stress (ie fear). The cortisol alters the metabolism, preparing for ‘fight or flight’, by releasing fat, sugar and keeping in water/sodium. When this occurs over time, your pet’s body is seriously affected resulting in many of the clinical signs, such as muscle wasting.

Cushings disease is most often seen in small breed, older dogs. The biggest clinical signs are increased drinking and urinating excessively. Most dogs have a distended, swaying belly; the excess cortisol causes loss of abdominal muscle. Many dogs have skin changes seen as hair loss and a sparse hair coat, at times the hair loss is symmetric. In most dogs there is an increased appetite, and excessive panting. These dogs typically have been tested for other causes of increased drinking (including diabetes, kidney and liver disease) and all tests have come back negative.

The most common cause is due to a tumor on the pituitary gland (a gland at the base of the brain). A small percentage of cases are caused by a tumor on the adrenal gland (a gland in the kidneys). In some cases, pets can get all these signs by being on steroids, such as prednisone. In this case, the treatment is to wean the pet off the drug.

The most useful diagnostic test your veterinarian can perform is called the low dose dexamethasone suppression test. This is the most accurate in confirming Cushings disease- about 90% of dogs will test positive. Normally if you give dexamethasone to a healthy dog, the pituitary gland will sense this, and you will see a drop in blood cortisol. In a dog with Cushings disease, ( usually a pituitary tumor), there is no drop in blood cortisol 8 hours after giving the injection.

The major part of diagnosis is differentiating between pituitary Cushings disease, and adrenal tumor as the cause. This is important to know, because treatment is very different for each type. If there is an adrenal tumor is present, there is a 50% chance of it being a malignant; surgery is an option in that the tumor may be removed. If the cause is pituitary, then medical options are the treatment of choice.

There are primarily two conventional options to consider in treating your dog for Cushings disease. Lysdoren is an older, cytotoxic drug which destroys part of the pituitary gland. It has serious side effects, and if given as an overdose it can give your dog a condition called Addison’s disease. Trilostane is the newer drug that is treating Cushings disease in dogs with fewer side effects. It works by inhibiting adrenal enzymes, lowering the blood cortisol. Both drugs require that your dog take them regularly, and that there is regular monitoring by your veterinarian.

Anipryl, or L-deprenyl is a newer safe medication to treat the disease. It is available from your veterinarian. It must be given daily, and can be quite costly to treat a large dog. It works directly on the pituitary gland helping to decrease cortisol production.

In Cushings, the cells are more prone to injury from the high cortisol levels. The three most effective antioxidants are Vitamin E, Vitamin C and Selenium. These are best given in combination: give 100 IU of Vitamin E, 100 mg of Vitamin C and 20 ug if Selenium per 10 lbs of body weight daily.

A herb called Ginkgo Biloba has been shown to reduce cortisol production, similar to Anipryl. The dose of the tincture is one drop per lb of body weight twice daily. The dried concentrated extract is also available, give 3 mg per lb of body weight daily. Another herb called valerian can be very helpful. High cortisol levels will make your pet feel anxious. Valerian is great at decreasing anxiety levels. The dog dose is 1 drop per lb of body weight twice daily.

Now you should understand exactly what Cushings disease in dogs is, the causes, plus the common clinical signs: increased drinking, increased urination, and increased appetite. The most effective diagnostic test is the low dose dexamethasone suppression test, being 90% accurate. The best conventional treatment is a newer drug called trilostane, while the most useful holistic option is a herb called Ginkgo Bilboa.

Treatment Options for Crohns Ileitis

The gene that causes psoriasis can be present in a person who suffers from crohns ileitis. This type of Crohn’s disease affects only the ileum, which is the last and lowest portion of the small intestine, and is the closest to the colon. This form of Crohn’s disease is one of the more common types, but is not as common as ileocolitis, which is a form of Crohn’s that affects both the ileum and the colon.

What can a Crohn’s ileitis sufferer experience? The inflammation of the ileum often causes diarrhea and cramping or abdominal pain in the lower right region of the abdomen and near the belly button. Sometimes pain may be so severe it imitates appendicitis. These symptoms are usually most pronounced after a meal. Left untreated, crohns ileits can lead to inflammatory masses, obstruction of the small intestines, and the development of fistulas.

In addition, Crohn’s disease that affects the ileum can cause malabsorption of the B12 vitamin. It can also cause folate deficiency which can obstruct red blood cell development and increase a person’s risk of becoming anaemic.

How does crohns ileitis occur? It is still not known what causes Crohn’s disease, or why a person’s immune system malfunctions. However, like all ailments, the condition starts small. Miniscule pockets of inflammation persist and eventually spread. Once this occurs, the bowel lining can develop ulcers and the wall of the bowel can thicken. If not treated, the bowel will eventually narrow or become obstructed, requiring the sufferer to undergo surgery such as having part of their intestines or bowel removed.

What are the treatment options? The type of treatment for crohns ileitis depends on the severity of the disease, and whether or not a person is experiencing an active case of Crohn’s.

Nevertheless, a Crohn’s sufferer can try alternative therapies such as reducing stress, exercising, and maintaining a balanced, nutritious and Crohn’s-friendly diet.

Providing your body with the rest it needs, the energy it requires, and eliminating foods that aggravate the condition, is the perfect compliment to medications and can help prevent flare ups and surgery. Other alternative/complimentary treatments for Crohn’s ileitis include botanical remedies, supplements, acupuncture, hypnotherapy and homeopathy.

Aside from alternative remedies, the following are the most common types of medical treatment used:

Cortisone or Steroids (Prednisone) – Theses types of medications are very powerful and are prescribed to those with severe crohns ileitis. Their purpose is to bring the disease under control fast and put the patient in remission. The drug is typically administered by enema or pill and can be quite effective in relieving Crohn’s symptoms.

However, some common side effects include indigestion, nervousness, restlessness, and increased appetite. Other rare side effects may include mental depression, hallucinations, skin rash or hives, etc. For those who are taking this medication for the long-term, side effects may include acne, nausea, constant abdominal pain, trouble sleeping, unusual bruising, rapid weight gain, etc.

Immune System Suppressors (Imuran, Purinethol) – These medications are designed to suppress the overreacting immune system, and are administered orally. These meds are generally used for long-term treatment to maintain remission of the disease, and are primarily prescribed for those who suffer from a severe case of crohns ileitis.

The side effects associated with immune system suppressors include, but are not limited to: darkening of the skin, headache, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weakness, itchy skin or skin rash, etc.

Infliximab (Remicade) – This is a new type of drug treatment that is showing much promise for those who suffer from moderate to severe Crohn’s disease. Remicade is designed to block the body’s inflammation response. Remicade is administered via intravenous infusion over the course of several hours and is a short-term treatment. It has been effective at helping Crohn’s sufferers achieve relief of their symptoms and remission.

The side effects of Remicade include, but are not limited to: Abdominal pain, nausea, sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing, cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, tightness in chest, etc.

Be sure to speak to your doctor about all treatment options for crohns ileitis, and bring any side effects you experience to your doctor’s attention immediately.

Why Does My Computer Freeze Up? – A Guide to Fix Computer Freezes

“Why does my computer freeze?” I was wondering this question myself not too long ago. I would be using my computer like any other time. When all of a sudden my computer freezes up. I cannot access any programs. My mouse is not moving anywhere. I cannot use control/alt/delete. The only thing you can do is turn off your computer manually which is unsafe for your computer and causes you to lose any information were using at the time.

Anyone who has experienced this knows how big of a pain a computer freeze is. And it is even worse for those who like me had this happening to them on a regular basis. It just seems to come out of nowhere and can be a huge nuisance.

What I learned was that the problems were coming from my Windows registry. The registry is the most important and fragile area of your computer. It contains the information that runs all of your software and hardware. As you install, update, and delete programs the registry becomes filled with unwanted information.

This unwanted information causes two problems. First off it slows down your computer considerably. Like a traffic jam, your computer becomes congested with information and needs to be cleaned out to run fast again. The other problem is windows error messages and your computer freezing up. This useless and corrupted information on the registry counteracts with other programs causing serious problems.

The only way to fix this problem and prevent these kinds of computer freezes is to repair the Windows registry. Because it is such a fragile area it was recommended to use a program to clean up registry errors for me. I did so and my computer stopped freezing almost immediately. Even better it began to run like it was brand new!

If you are interested I have recommended the program I used below to solve this problem for me. With this program you will never have to wonder why does my computer freeze up ever again. Give it a try!

Medicine Management and Why It Is So Important

Medicine management looks at and sets out standards regarding the way that medicines are prescribed, stored, transported and used in an attempt to protect both the medical professionals administering drugs and the patients who receive them. The standards set out in the document are the minimum standards of practice and they are expected to be used as the basis of local and national policies. The MHRA in 2004 stated that Medicine Management was ‘The clinical, cost effective and safe use of medicines to ensure that patients get the maximum benefit from the medicines they need, while minimising potential harm.’ The standards cover not only the drugs prescribed for human patients and animals but blood and blood products as well. And this applies to medication that is taken in the home as well as medication that is administered while in hospital or in other healthcare establishments.

Management of medication is also the responsibility of the individual, as medicines are essentially powerful drugs that can be extremely dangerous if they are not used correctly and in the right circumstances. It is important that you know exactly what you are taking, the dose that you need to take, how often you need to take the medicine and for how long. The active ingredient in a medicine may interact badly with other medication that you may be taking, so it is important that your doctor knows exactly what tablets you take each day whether it is vitamins, homeopathic, herbal or other prescription medication. Your doctor or pharmacist will discuss managing medicines that you take in a way to make them more effective in dealing with your problem. It is also vital that you tell the doctor if you have had a reaction to medication you have taken in the past. If you are a woman and there is a chance that you may be pregnant, the doctor needs to know as the medicine may be harmful to the foetus.

Medicine administration depends on the accuracy of the process of prescribing and dispensing. Medicine safety is a responsibility that is held jointly by several organisations, the pharmaceutical companies that develop and produce the medicine, the regulatory agencies that approve the use of the medicine, the medical practitioners who prescribe the medicine, the pharmacists that dispense the medicine and finally the patients that take the medicine or the carers that give the medicine to the patient they care for. Guidelines should be provided to cover administering medications.

Managing medication sets out to minimise the errors or the potential for errors by putting procedures in place to educate people about medicine safety and in that way ensure that medicines are managed safely when they are prescribed, dispensed and administered with minimal errors. Although many medicine errors cause no harm to the patient, it has been estimated that worldwide thousands of deaths can be attributed to medication errors which can be reduced by having a good system of medication management in place. Many of the errors involve taking a larger dose than prescribed for example taking two tablets instead of one, for example taking a second dose as the patient does not recall taking the first one, or suffering side effects from the medication. These do not cause lasting harm and advice can be obtained from the doctor or pharmacist on how to deal with these problems.

Modern technology within The NHS is being developing to help with medicine management by collating patient information, for example holding a list of medication prescribed for that patient and any adverse reactions that may have occurred in the past which can be used when dispensing additional medication for that patient. It can also help to provide information for the patient on the dose to take and how often to take it, how to store the medicine and the possible side effects that may occur and what to do if they occur.

If there are any queries about medication that has been prescribed for you that have not been explained to you or you need something to be clarified speak to the doctor who prescribed the medicine, this could be the ward clinician if you are in hospital or your GP. If you need advice regarding the medicine a pharmacist may be able to help you or advise you on whom you should speak to.

If you would like to read more on this subject leaflets can be obtained online or from The Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards for Medicines Management dated 2010 or The Department of Health document – Building a Safer NHS for Patients – Improving Medication Safety dated 2003.

Penis Sensitivity: The Role of Vitamins

The degree to which a man enjoys a sexual experience is directly related to the amount of penis sensitivity he has. When the penis is capable of registering intense sensation, a man’s sexual activities are as fulfilling as can be. But when there is a dullness or deadening in the manhood, sex is considerably less rewarding. Ensuring good penis health, which includes delivering the proper vitamins to the member, plays a significant role in maintaining penis sensitivity.

Loss of penis sensitivity

To a teen-aged male, it may seem incomprehensible that his penis could ever experience less than intense sensations. The slightest touch, especially on an erect penis, sends shivers of delight throughout the body during adolescence.

And that’s understandable. After all, the nerve endings in the penis are highly sensitive and primed to respond. But they may not always stay that way.

Loss of penis sensitivity can occur for a number of reasons, including major physical trauma. However, the most common reason for a penis just not feeling as good as it used to is simple rough handling, often occurring over a fairly long period of time.

For example, many men employ a “death grip” on their penis while masturbating – an overly tight grasp. Some men engage in partner sex without proper lubrication. Both of these situations may cause a loss of sensation. So can frequently “going commando” – deciding not to wear underwear, leaving the penis to rub against rough fabrics like denim.

Skin and cells

In all of these situations, friction and wear and tear go to work on the penis (and especially the ultra-sensitive nerves in the glans). Two things generally happen. First, the excess friction causes tiny, thin layers of scar tissue to start to build up. Over time, these layers form a “buffer” between the nerve endings and the source of stimulation, causing de-sensitization. In addition, the nerves themselves experience some damage which prevents them from operating at maximum efficiency.

Clearly, it’s important that a man takes sensible steps to prevent this loss of sensation, such as using sufficient lubrication during sexual activities and protecting the penis from excess exposure to rough fabrics and surfaces. But it also pays to make sure that the penis is getting its proper share of vitamins.

In particular, the penis can benefit from the following:

– Vitamin E. Keeping the penis skin well moisturized helps to prevent damage from excess friction; in addition, dehydration itself can lead to toughening of the skin, which affects penis sensitivity. Vitamin E is one of Nature’s most effective moisturizing agents.

– Vitamin D. Like vitamin E, vitamin D aids in natural skin hydration. In addition, vitamin D possesses antioxidant capabilities which help to strengthen penile cell metabolism and maintain the health of cells, making them hardier and less prone to damage.

– Vitamin C. Sensitivity is also related to the proper flow of blood to the penis. Vitamin C works to keep blood vessels healthy, which in turn aids in improved delivery of blood to the manhood.

Delivery of vitamins

A man concerned about penis sensitivity should make sure he gets the above vitamins via the regular use of a top-notch penis health creme (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil). Why a crème? Because of its topical application, it can deliver those vitamins directly to the penis itself. But there’s another reason: A really good crème will include other important ingredients that can interact with those vitamins for a synergistic health effect. For example, a crème that contains acetyl L-carnitine and L-arginine “doubles up” the crème’s penis sensitivity power. Acetyl L-carnitine is a neuroprotective ingredient that helps preserve nerve sensitivity. And L-arginine is an enzyme which is involved in the creation of nitric oxide, which, like vitamin C, helps improve blood flow to the penis. So for the man interested in keeping his penis well-sensitized, a crème like Man1 Man Oil is best.

Depression: How to Recognize It in Seniors

Depression in older adults is relatively common. Yet, the causes and symptoms in this population tend to be misunderstood and too often overlooked. Medication interactions, life circumstances, and simple aging can make depression hard to recognize. Even though depression is never normal, older people tend to suffer from the condition in disproportionately high amounts and are a segment of the population least likely to get treatment.

More than seven million elderly adults suffer from depression. But, these huge numbers are in stark contrast to the fact that only about ten percent of these individuals ever receive treatment for the disorder. As a matter of fact, about five million older adults have what is called subsyndromal depression which is depression that is so “mild” as to not meet the criteria for a diagnosis of depression. Subsyndromal depression is common in the elderly, and may indicate an increased risk of developing major depression. Recognizing and treating depression in older adults becomes especially important as the “Baby Boomer” generation ages and places unheard of pressures on healthcare in this country.

Depression is not “just part of getting old”

On average, from one to five percent of older people may suffer from depression. However, those numbers drastically increase to a whopping 13.5 percent for individuals who reside in a home or institutional healthcare setting. These numbers appear to indicate that older individuals needing more care may suffer from depression either because of the lack of control they feel they have over their own lives or because of existing medical conditions.

Depression occurs for a number of reasons. Like the rest of the population, senior citizens may experience depression for many of the same reasons. However, seniors also have a host of other issues that complicate things.

Factors that influence depression in the elderly

Several factors – including psychological factors, environmental factors, and physical factors – contribute to depression in the elderly. Any one or a combination of several of the following factors may be responsible for depression in older people.

Psychological factors include:

• Life events – either traumatic or unresolved

• A previous or family history of depression

• Body image issues. As we age, we often experience discomfort with physical changes such as surgeries, heart attacks and stroke, amputations, etc.

• Frustrations that may be the result of memory loss (caused by aging or disease)

• Dealing with the loss of friends, family members, spouse.

• Dealing with changes in living conditions or situations such as moving in with family, housing in an extended care facility, or moving into a nursing home

• Loss of independence. Allowing a caregiver access to the home can make older people especially anxious. They may also feel that their independence is being diminished if they need help.

• Existing psychological conditions such as low self-esteem, anxiety disorders, etc.

Environmental factors include:

• Social isolation. A reduced ability to get around and the loss of close friends and family members (including a spouse) may contribute to depression.

• Retirement.

• Decreased mobility including the loss of driving privileges.

Physical factors include:

• A family and personal history of depression

• Existing medical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart attack and stroke, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.

• Medication interactions and side effects. Certain pain medications, high blood pressure drugs, hormones, heart meds, arthritis treatments, chemotherapy treatments, and drugs prescribed for psychological disorders may contribute to depression.

• Chemical imbalances and other changes in brain function.

• Chronic and/or severe pain.

• Previous or ongoing substance abuse.

Caregiver assistance in identifying the signs of depression

Caregivers may be the most important asset in identifying signs of depression in the elderly. Caregivers, whether they are relatives or professionals, are important because they interact with the elderly person daily. This daily contact may enable a caregiver to pinpoint problems before anyone else, even the older person’s physician.

One of the interesting differences between older adults who suffer from depression and younger people is that older adults often have difficulty understanding that they are depressed. Medical professionals and family members often ask “are you depressed?” The answer is almost always “no.” This is because older adults don’t often associate what they are feeling with depression. They may also feel that admitting to depression signifies weakness.

Older people may experience more “sad” events than the rest of the population. They may also interpret these events far differently than younger people. For instance, the loss of a close friend can not only be viewed as a sad event, it may also remind the older person of his/her own mortality. On top of that, older people may have fewer friends, making the loss of one especially heart wrenching. But, it’s often hard to tell the difference between sadness, grief, and actual depression. The primary difference is that sadness and grief are temporary. An elderly person that is “sad” for an extended period of time after such an event may be depressed. Caregivers are in a unique position to identify small changes in behavior that may signal the onset of something serious.

The symptoms of depression in older adults may include:

• memory problems

• confusion

• social withdrawal

• loss of appetite

• weight loss

• vague complaints of pain

• inability to sleep

• irritability

• delusions (fixed false beliefs)

• hallucinations

• persistent and vague complaints

• help-seeking

• moving in a more slow manner

• demanding behavior

The difference between depression and dementia

There are several symptoms common to both depression and dementia that make one hard to distinguish from the other. These two disorders may also be comorbid, meaning that it is possible to have both at the same time. Some of these shared symptoms may include loss of interest in once-favored activities and pastimes, social withdrawal, memory loss, sleep problems, and difficulty concentrating.

The Mayo Clinic has identified three factors that differentiate depression and dementia. These factors may be key in identifying depression in the elderly. In general, elderly adults who have dementia as opposed to depression:

• May have symptoms of depression that are less severe

• May experience episodes of depression that don’t last as long or recur as often

• Talk of suicide and attempt suicide less often

Diagnosing depression in the elderly correctly is imperative to administering the correct treatment plan. Treatment for senior depression may include:

• Antidepressants. SSRIs (Celexa, Zoloft, Effexor, and Wellbutrin) are often prescribed for older people who have depression and dementia. These medications have a lower risk of side effects and drug interactions than other antidepressants.

• Exercise. The symptoms of depression can be alleviated with regular physical activity. Researchers believe that exercising in the morning may be most helpful.

• Emotional and mental support. Counseling services and support groups are available for elderly individuals suffering from depression.

• Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Especially when depression and dementia are diagnosed together, ECT may be the most effective form of treatment. Some elderly individuals with severe depression respond best to ECT and this treatment offers fewer side effects for the elderly.

Although elderly women are twice as likely as older men to suffer from depression, men, as in the general population, are subject to the highest rate of suicide in the United States. Untreated depression is serious. Elderly people with untreated depression may experience a decreased quality of life and may be at increased risk of suicide. Understanding the causes and recognizing the signs is crucial in helping seniors live happy and healthy lives.

Stress – Signs of Stress Overload

Feeling like there are too many demands on you? Are you in Stress Overload?

Losing sleep worrying about tests, school or work? Eating on the run because your schedule is just too busy? Well you are not alone.

Everyone experiences stress at times – adults, teens, and even kids. But there are ways to minimise or eliminate stress and easy ways to learn how to cope with the stress that’s unavoidable.

Just a little stress can be a good thing however stress overload is a very different story

Too much stress isn’t good for anyone. For example, if you feel a little stress about a test you are about to take, it could motivate you to study hard. But stressing out over the test can make it too hard to concentrate on what you are trying to learn.

Pressures that are too intense or last for a long period of time, or a trauma that is endured alone, can cause people to feel stress overload.

Examples of stress overload are being bullied, coping with a learning disability such as dyslexia or ADHD, exposure to violence or injury, stress in your relationships or the heavy emotional burden that can follow a broken heart or the death of a loved one or a crazy jammed packed schedule, that does not allow enough down time to rest and relax, and always being on the go are all contributing factors that lead to overwhelm.

Some stressful situations can be extreme and may require special attention and care. Post traumatic stress disorder is a very strong stress reaction that can develop in people who have lived through an extremely traumatic event, such as a car accident, a tsunami, or rape.

Some people have anxiety problems that can cause them to overreact when stressed, making even small worries a huge trauma. If a person often feels tense, upset, worried, or stressed, it can be a sign of anxiety. Anxiety problems usually need attention, and many people turn to professional counselors for help in overcoming them.

When in stress overload people may also notice feelings of overwhelm such as anxiety or panic attacks, pressured, hassled, or rushed, irritable and moody with physical side effects like stomach problems, headaches, or even chest pain. Some people can have allergic reactions, such as eczema or asthma, trouble sleeping, they may drink, smoke or eat too much, suffer from sadness or depression.

What you can do to deal with stress overload or, better yet, to avoid it in the first place?

React Fast to Signs of Stroke

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to remind everyone of the need to get immediate help if someone you know is experiencing symptoms of stroke. If an individual is having a stroke, it is very possible that they will not recognize that they are which makes it even more critical that those around them are aware of the signs and take urgent action.

Stroke can happen to anyone and can occur at any age. According to the Stroke Awareness Foundation, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and almost 25% of strokes affect people under the age of 65.

An easy acronym to help determine if stroke is occurring is F.A.S.T. Face: is the person’s face drooping to one side? Arm: Is the person able to raise both arms, and maintain their balance? Speech: Can the person repeat a sentence without slurring words? If any of these symptoms are evident, Time is of the essence and you need to call 911 immediately. When the EMTs (emergency medical technicians) arrive, be sure to request that the patient be taken to a hospital that has a certified stroke center so that they can receive proper treatment. Oftentimes if the hospital is not equipped to treat stroke patients, the patient may be sent away without correct diagnosis and treatment, and will suffer much more extreme effects of the stroke.

Typically if the person who is suffering a stroke receives t-PA (tissue plasminogenic activators) within three hours, their risk of experiencing debilitating effects of the stroke, including paralysis on one side of their body, is greatly reduced. If treatment is administered after three hours, the drugs are much less effective.

There are also some initial signs of stroke that are not as obvious as the ones listed above. These are sometimes referred to as mini-strokes or warning strokes. The medical term is TIA or transient ischemic attack. Although these are less common, if do you experience one of these and get immediate treatment, you may ward off a major stroke. According to the American Heart Association, symptoms of TIA include: sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body; confusion or trouble speaking; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; dizziness or trouble walking; and sudden severe headache.

While these symptoms may sounds like the same as a stroke, the difference between TIAs and stroke, is that the TIA symptoms are short term, often lasting no more than 5 minutes, and do not cause brain injury. However, they are not to be ignored, as about 50% of patients that experience TIAs suffer a major stroke within one year.

Unfortunately, stroke can strike when no one is around to recognize the symptoms and call 911 immediately. The longer the stroke patient goes without out medical help, the greater the risk of long term injury and even death can occur. If someone you know and love does experience extensive injury from stroke or brain-attack, do not despair. Even though the recovery process can be very long and trying, the stroke survivor will recover and although their life style may be much different than what they previously had, there is life after stroke.

A study at the University of Maryland showed that stroke patients that used humor and a positive attitude during their recovery, looking for ways to find a positive outcome from their experience, had a greater success of recovery and suffered less from bouts of depression. Patients also fared much better if they had a strong support network of empathetic family members and loved ones to assist with transportation to doctor appointments, therapies, and other social outings.

A positive, persistent attitude will help the stroke survivor and family members get through the recovery period, and with love and support you will all come through the event much stronger and able to cope with whatever challenges life sends your way.

Schizophrenia – Causes

Schizophrenia is one of the complex mental disorders in which there is not just one cause for its evolution but many. Many psychiatrists and psychologists have provided many theories in relation to the causes of Schizophrenia.

  • Brain chemistry. Most of the researchers conceive that the schizophrenic patients produce high level of a chemical present in brain known as Dopamine and also are really sensitive to this brain chemical. In medical terms, Dopamine is termed as a neurotransmitter. A neurotransmitter is a substance which permits the nerve cells into the human brain in order to forward messages to one another. When there is an imbalance inside it, it can really have an undesirable impact on to the reactions of the stimulus of the brain.
  • Heredity. Schizophrenia can also be inherited from family because this mental disorder flows in few families. Therefore a person has the ability to inherit the development of the mental disorder. Those people whose family evidences schizophrenic members have 10% inheriting capability. People who have schizophrenic parents or schizophrenic identical twin then the chances are 40% but there is a fact that over 60% of schizophrenic people does not evidence any relative who suffered from this mental disorder.
  • Ramifications during birth and pregnancy. There are few researchers who conceive that if there is any kind of malnutrition or infection during birth of a child or pregnancy period or some ramifications of child birth, then it can surely increase the probabilities of giving birth to a child who may develop symptoms of schizophrenia in later years of life.
  • An abnormality within the brain. As there is advancement in the brain imaging technique and newer and more reliable machines have been developed, the researchers are now able to examine and study the behavior of brain impulses and structure of the nervous system of the patients having schizophrenia disorder. The researchers have resulted in reports that mention that schizophrenic people have some insidious abnormalities in the functioning and structure of the brain. The defined abnormalities include slender expansion of the ventricles inside the nervous system which contains fluid and also features reduction in size of many sections of the brain system. Another thing which may confuse you is that researchers have also pointed out that these abnormalities may not be present in few people suffering from schizophrenia but may be present in normal people.

Therefore, causes of schizophrenia may vary from one individual to another and one location to another.

Mental Illness Causes And Natural Solutions

Mental illness causes a multitude of problems, from the occasional problem to a permanent deviation from natural balance. These problems are on the rise. The normal medical approach to treating them can be draconian and horrendous. None of them deal with the cause, most are toxic to the body and all depress the immune system, opening the door for future health problems.

Mental health issues are gaining notoriety. They can vary from shutting down emotionally to full clinical depression. They can include mild anxiety to debilitating and frequent anxiety attacks. Mental derangement can be extreme.

Medicine has little understanding of the causes of mental illnesses, so their approach is to subdue the symptoms rather than to take corrective action. Their solution is to use stronger and stronger mind altering drugs that are known to cause increased aggression in many. This aggression is not limited by normal boundaries most of us feel. So the result can be devastating to those involved.

Electric shock treatment is still very much in use for those unfortunate enough to consult with practitioners who support this outdated and ineffective treatment.

All these measures result in shut down zombies who tend to feel nothing – no lows, but no highs either. It makes the problem appear better to the onlooker, but makes the unfortunate sufferer much worse.

Yet it is easy to see mental illness causes when you simply open up your mind.

If you start by looking to nature, it is inconceivable that a wild animal will have these problems. They simply would not be able to survive for any length of time, if they did have them.

Logically, this means the cause must lie in what humans do, or not do.

Let’s first look at childbirth. This is no longer a natural process with the due honouring of the mother’s role and time to allow the baby to do it their way. Maternity wards are now in hospitals and are coming to resemble a production line, with the maternity staff eager to move on to the next ‘patient’.

  • Mothers are often disempowered of this natural process, leading to post natal depression.
  • The umbilical cord is frequently cut before all the blood has been returned to the baby, leading to brain disorders.
  • Babies are often removed from the mother immediately after birth, breaking that all so important link, which can lead to an emotional shut down.
  • Vaccines are introduced at an age when the body has no defense against them, leading to mental disorders such as autism.

Although breast feeding is being encouraged more than it was in the not too distant past, it is still not fully supported with effective health care for the myriad of problems that can arise. Breast feeding is well known to support healthy children, both physically and mentally.

All these potential problems are bad enough, but the common child raising strategies don’t allow for the free expression of a growing child. Instead the child is required to be molded and shaped by society, family, religion and education to become robots that support the system.

This is terribly damaging to a child’s development. At every turn, their creativity is being suppressed. At every twist in the road, they are being judged. Emotions are not supported for the natural outlet that they represent.

This is all understandable when you appreciate that the same was done to the parents. But it is little wonder that not more people are suffering from mental health problems.

Mental illness causes lie in society’s desire to control, in its innate fear of freedom of expression, of allowing you to be who you are. When children are honoured for who they are, when children are allowed to grow without judgement, with full expression of their creativity, then you will have a society without mental health problems.

This is all well and good for future generations. But what about those with problems now? The homeopathic treatment of mental illness always deals with the cause, whether it was from separation from the mother, a vaccine or any other cause. In this way, it is possible to cure mental illnesses, in time.

My Hair Loss is Worse When Washing My Hair – Should I Shampoo Less?

I often get emails from folks who think that every time they shampoo their hair, their hair loss or shedding gets worse. Maybe what they are seeing shed onto their clothing or floor is pretty bad throughout the day, but every time they wash their hair, it comes out every where – on their hands, down their legs, and in the drain.

Understandably, after seeing all of this accelerated hair loss happen with every hair washing, they begin to think that maybe they would be better off not shampooing as often, using dry shampoo, or figuring out a way to use a gentler shampoo or even conditioner only (I have actually tried this.) While these things may cause some temporary relief psychologically, they often do little for your hair and scalp health. There are some tactics though that can make this process a little less unsavory. I’ll discuss this more in the following article.

Skipping Shampooing Really Doesn’t Keep The Hairs From Falling Out: You probably already know this, but before a shed is actually shed, it goes through many cycles, including the growing, resting and shedding phases. Once a hair goes from growing to resting, it is going to invariably shed eventually. There is no much that you can do about this. It has stopped being nourished and the follicle is loosening it’s grip on it so that it is no longer getting nourishment. This is often why you will see textural changes and flyaway type hair when a bout of TE (telogen effluvium) or shedding is coming on.

So even if you were able to keep hairs in the resting phase for a few days longer by skipping a shampoo or two, you’re only prolonging the inevitable and those hairs aren’t all that healthy anyway. And, often, if you skip a day, you will only make up for it on the day that you actually do take a deep breath and just wash your hair. More is likely going to come out that day because you were just delaying the process.

Here’s a concrete example. Let’s say for example that I’m either going through TE (shedding) or AGA (genetic loss.) Let’s say that my average shed is 175 per day. Understandably, it’s hard for me to prepare myself to wash my hair because I know that when I do, I’m going to lose about 130 hairs (45 more will come out throughout the day.) It’s difficult to see this wad of hair and know that each time I do, my hair is thinning more. So, I decide that I will begin shampooing every other day instead of every day. So on my day off, I only lose 50 hairs. I’m very happy thinking that I spared 125 strands. But, what is likely to happen? On the next day that I shampoo, I”m much more likely to shed more on that day – around 300. So where am I now? Right back at my 175 per day when you average it. This may not happen to the letter as I’ve described it, but countless people will tell you that if you average this out over weeks and months, you’ll likely see that you really aren’t really gaining anything and worse than that, you’re risking the health of your scalp and follicles. You can not afford to take this chance when you are shedding or thinning anyway.

All washing your hair is doing is massaging out what was positioned to come out anyway. And it’s important to keep your scalp clean as well as making sure that your follicles are free from debris. Also, washing regularly can help to soothe some of the inflammation that is the result of and perpetrator of this process (and it does remove some DHT.) This is very important. The only exception to this if you have some sort of reaction or allergy to your shampoo or you have some scalp issue which is aggravated by the product you are using. In these cases, obviously putting the irritant on our head is not going to be a good idea.

Some Things That Can Help With The Accelerated Hair Loss When You Shampoo: There are a couple of things that I’ve used in the past when the shedding got really bad. The first is applying the product with an empty spray bottle. This allows you to use less manipulation to spread it through your hair. Simply spray it all over, concentrating on the roots. However, you still must use your fingers to free your scalp from debris and sebum. Resist the urge to just rinse the shampoo without working it through.

Another trick is applying conditioner before you shampoo. This will help your hands easily glide over your head so that you aren’t having to pull or tug to get all the product out. This may spare at least some strands and make the process a little less painful.

The Bottom Line: At the end of the day, for most people, it’s not shampooing or washing your hair that is the enemy. It’s whatever is causing your hair loss in the first place. You’re going to get a lot more relief pin pointing and addressing the problem than neglecting your hair and scalp’s health and putting off this basic hygiene. I know that dry or spray shampoo can seem tempting, but you need to brush or comb it through anyway and it does nothing for your scalp’s health and it doesn’t remove DHT.

How To Recognize The Symptoms Of Adult Ear Infection

While ear infections in children are common, they can still affect adults and are caused by bacteria getting inside the ear.

Cause Of Adult Ear Infection

Bacteria enters the middle ear through what is known as the eustachian tube. When this happens, infection usually occurs. The resultant infection swells the middle ear lining which in turn causes blockage in the eustachian tube. This leads to the formation of fluid build up and as it increases, can cause temporary hearing loss and pain. Unchecked, the fluid build up can reach levels pressuring the ear drum and damaging it.

While there are several reasons adult ear infection can surface such as bacteria and viruses or from the common cold, it must be noted an adult doesn’t necessarily have to be ill to become infected. Water in the ears which is left to sit or mucous deposited into the eustachian tubes from blowing the nose can lead to infection.

Adult Ear Infection Symptoms

The following are the symptoms of adult ear infection:

– blockage in the ear

– temporary hearing loss

– pain in the ear

– fever and dizziness

It’s important to see your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms especially for any length of time. Caught early, infection can be treated quite comfortably and any further complications can be halted.

Adult Ear Infection Treatment

When infection is suspected, your doctor will conduct a standard examination to confirm whether the symptoms being experienced are as a result of adult ear. Bear in mind if the initial examination is a little clouded then further tests may be required.

Bacterial related infections are treated with antibiotics. If infection is diagnosed immediately or you go in to see your doctor at the first sign of symptoms, antibiotics could be delayed. This is because in adults, improvement can occur without the use of medication.

If the situation doesn’t improve following a couple of days, then a course of antibiotics will usually be prescribed. As with the use of any antibiotic treatment, a prescribed course should be completed from start to finish.

Viral infections are a little more troublesome to treat. In fact, in some cases, minor surgery could be recommended to help dissipate the build up and drain the fluid in the ear.

While using cotton buds is usually frowned upon by the medical profession, leaving water in the ear from either showering or swimming is not a good idea. The use of an approved flush could be recommended for the ear or for the nose, nasal sprays, which have proven effective as a way of washing out bacteria.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss – How to Treat This Specific Type of Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss or Nerve deafness is one type of hearing loss that affects the inner ear or the acoustic or vestibulococlear nerve or both. This happens when the hair cells which transmit sound to the brain is damaged and could not function properly.

Most of the time the sufferer may not be aware of his/her condition. It is friends and family members that notice the symptoms of sensorineural hearing loss. The symptoms include unable to hear high tones, the need to ask to repeat certain words, loud TV and radio volume and because of the hearing loss physical and social activities can also be affected which could to irritability, moodiness and depression.

To diagnose sensorineural hearing you need to consult the doctor and tests will include CT scan, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and EEG that evaluate activity in the brain.

The usual cause of sensorineural loss includes head or ear injury caused by physical trauma, medication side effects specifically from ototoxic medicines, ear infection, Presbycusis or the gradual loss of hearing due to old age, tumors, and hereditary. Other less known cause is anemia, heart problems and lupus or any condition that reduces the supply of oxygen to the brain.

For sensorineural treatment hearing aids and cochlear implants are frequently use. Hearing aid is a small electronic device that is put behind the ear. Hearing aid components include tiny microphones, which gather sound and convert it to electrical impulses, amplifier that increases the strength of these impulses and battery for energy supply. Another treatment available is cochlear implant this a small complex electronic device implanted behind the ear, this device directly stimulate the auditory nerves. This type of treatment requires the patient to have surgical procedure and therapy.

There are natural remedies for sensorineural hearing loss most of these natural treatments are mostly preventive measures. One way to prevent or delay hearing loss is proper diet or nutritional therapy. One reason or cause of sensorineural hearing loss is recurring viral or bacterial infections. This could be cause by weak immune system and bad hygiene. To strengthen the immune system take vitamin c, zinc is used to cure ear infections. Another way to prevent ear problem is to eat healthy so better to avoid junk and processed food and take nutritional supplements like vitamin B-complex, iron and calcium, these supplements reduce the risk ear infection. There are also studies that show that food rich in Vitamin A and folic acid also delays hearing loss.

Popular Herbs such as Echinacea, which can strengthen the immune system and goldenseal or yellow root, which stimulates the secretion and flow of bile, it is also used against variety of bacteria, yeast, and fungi, such as E. Coli and Candida which can cause ear infections. Chinese herbal therapy is also generally accepted in treating ear infections. Another widely used is garlic juice, which is a powerful and natural antiseptic herb.

There are many natural alternatives to treat and delay causes of hearing loss. They are safe and even good for the general health.

The Pros and Cons of Baby Sign Language

According to those who support the use of baby sign language, it advances the communication between parents and infants. Baby sign language is therefore recommended not only to deaf-mute babies and their parents but to all babies.

Clears communication lines

Babies want to communicate. However, they can better associate the right gesture to its meaning than the right word to its meaning. So, it will take more time for a baby to communicate effectively through speaking. Sign language can help bridge the delay. During the time that your baby cannot express himself through words yet, he may be able to do so through signing.

Prevents tantrums

When your baby cannot express himself well, you the confused parent may not respond correctly. When this happens, your baby can get very frustrated. This can result to tantrums. If you are trying to get him to sleep, you may have a much harder time. Maybe he is trying to tell you that he wants something first but you cannot deliver because you cannot understand.

Promotes self-esteem

Signing helps your baby communicate. When he realizes that you can understand him, he will feel proud of his accomplishment. As a result, your baby will start developing a healthy self-esteem. This will encourage him to communicate more with you.

Makes things orderly

If both you and baby can understand each other, the situation at home can be more peaceful and more orderly. You can respond promptly to your baby’s needs so baby is content and eager to further the bond.
