Brain Sarcoidosis – All You Need to Know and Exciting News

Brain sarcoidosis is a complex disease and its treatment in modern medicine is based on dealing with the symptoms, rather then addressing the causes which remain obscure. In sarcoidosis, the immune system is activated to fight a non-existent enemy, hence the name autoimmune.

This is an article that will be looking into the involvement of the Central Nervous System in sarcoidosis or Neurosarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis may affect any part of our brain. CNS involvement occurs in 2-7% of patients. One of the most common symptoms in those affected by neurosarcoidosis is facial weakness (if the disease affects the nerves of the face). It can also cause disturbances in the ways our senses function (hearing, taste…).

One of the worst implications is the involvement of hypothalamus, which regulates our body weight, body temperature and sleep.

Brain sarcoidosis diagnosis

Of all the forms of this disease, neurosarcoidosis is the most difficult to diagnose, because of the inaccessibility and the risk of biopsies of CNS lesions. That is why MRI scans are the first choice in health practitioners looking into brain involvement in sarcoidosis.

Brain sarcoidosis manifestations

Common manifestations of brain sarcoidosis include: Meningitis, Seizures, Cerebellar ataxia (loss of coordination), Psychiatric symptoms, Decreased hearing, Speech impairment, Loss of sense of smell, Dementia or delirium, Dizziness or vertigo (abnormal sensation of movement), Papilledema (optic disc swelling).

Brain Sarcoidosis – Optic nerve

This is the second most commonly involved cranial nerve in sarcoidosis (after the facial nerve). Optic nerve lesion occurs in 5% of patients with brain sarcoidosis. Visual symptoms of optic nerve involvement include blurred vision, field defects, and pupillary abnormalities. Examination of the optic fundi reveals characteristic sarcoid changes, including edema of the disc, optic neuritis, and optic atrophy secondary to granulomatous infiltration in brain sarcoidosis.

Brain sarcoidosis and the spinal cord

There are no rules to what part of the spinal cord can be involved in sarcoidosis. Clinical signs of spinal cord dysfunction include: paraparesis (weakness of the lower extremities), tetraparesis (weakness of all four limbs), back and leg pains, incontinence (inability to control excretory functions).

Christian Faith, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizophrenia – Part One

Growing up with Bible stories and the TV and movies, you come to know about maniac’s. As a teenager I knew that genius and insanity were very closely related. Little did I know I would one day become insane. Insanity… being out of your mind… delusional… having visions of grandeur… deceived by evil spirits… possessed by demons… contacting the dead… trips to heaven and hell… seeing evil spirits… seeing angels… seeing Jesus… seeing people out of the Bible… all in Part One

Writing five pages without editing except for a proofreader… writing a warning from God to a nation… being delivered from demons… having demons speak to you… having a demon pretend to be the Holy Spirit and tell you lies and direct you to do things that you assume are God telling you to do… staying up for three days and three nights without sleep… sleeping for two days straight… being so depressed you can’t even wash clothes, shower, shave or cook for yourself… all in Part two

These are all experiences I have had as a Christian with schizoaffective disorder. Which is Manic depressive (Bipolar disorder) and Schizophrenia bundled into one illness.

One thing I have found in the church is that FEW people understand mental illness. I also have never met a born again Christian in the mental health services I have been part of and so I am in limbo.

One time about five months ago when I was in hospital I prayed for a Schizophrenic patient to be able to hear from God, and asked her to repeat about four sentences that I would have God speak to her. The message was a message I wanted to hear from God but didn’t have the faith to ask Him myself as my own head was in a bad place with deceiving spirits going rampant. She was half way through the second sentence and tears were streaming down my face. God gave me a very comforting and reassuring message of hope in the midst of my crisis.

The patient who delivered the message was astounded that I was so affected and told me that she was so in love with the voice that had spoken the message to her. She said the voice was so soft and so full of love and so different to the voices that spoke to her. I told her that she could always ask God to speak to her and He would comfort her.

Everybody thinks Schizophrenic patients are possessed. Every one has half answers. Ask the same believers to cast the demons out of these patients and they are first to admit that they haven’t got the gift.

So how do I cope?

Man, I have to tell you this with all honesty.

I go to dark places and I cry. I cry a lot.

I pray.

I read my Bible.

And I chat to God.

Let me address each of the topics briefly that I mentioned above.

Insanity… being out of your mind.

Whenever you dream, daydreaming is being out of your mind. Where it crosses over to insanity is when you start to believe the reality is true. Many mentality ill people get help from inside their heads as an inner voice to think insane thoughts. I have in the past been quite convinced I was talking to Mary Magdalene in heaven. I used to speak to her for an hour each night. I was thrilled to be speaking to a person so close to Jesus. This is insanity.

Delusional as I understand the term is just like being out of your mind. In the year 2000 I began to speak to my ex wife in my mind. I was told by a spirit that was pretending to be Jesus that through my ex wife I was going to contact a whole lot of witches and convert them to Christianity and because they were gifted in the dark arts they were going to be very effective and powerful in the Christian world when they are operating out of love.

I asked who I thought was Jesus how to do it and he stepped me through it. Soon the whole 144,000 of the book of Revelation were converted and all were ex witches and I was the leader. I had a number of girls that I was speaking to in my mind and one was appointed as leader. Without much sleep I would preach to the 144,000 converts and teach them things and then I would ask them questions and we would do a count of the answers in percentage of which the lead girl would do a tally. Most of them were yes and no answers. When I started wanting to meet the Australian girls and the ones in my city and started to ask for phone numbers and email addresses I was told that it was a whole lot more convenient to speak like this.

If you have a Schizophrenic friend, ask them the answer they got from their voice they are speaking to when they asked for the phone number, mailing address, or email address.

The most common demonic response is that it’s cheaper and more convenient to do it through telepathy. I never pushed it further to the second and third level lies from demons.

Having visions of Grandeur… deceived by evil spirits.

I have thought I was one of the two witnesses of Revelation chapter 11. A human being who isn’t one of these two last days prophets who is convinced that they are, is most often mentally ill. When people said I wasn’t, this only made me more confident as I said, “No one believed in the prophets of the Bible, and so having no one believe me makes it more credible.” The only thing that brought my thinking back to reality was medication.

Many mentally ill people have low self esteem and so thinking they are a modern John the Baptist or Jesus or one of the two last day’s prophets makes them feel important. These delusions that the patient takes on makes them a person that is important and they will fight not to let go of this through of importance. All the way though my delusion I had a “Jesus” voice speaking to me that wasn’t Jesus. I never considered that Jesus would lie to me and so nothing my parents or friends said could be convincing to me.

God had grace on me though,as he allowed the Jesus voice on two occasions six years apart say something that turned out to be a lie. I never forgot the lies and could not reconcile I am the Way the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) of what Jesus said of Himself and the lies my Jesus had told me. I had simply forgiven Him and tried to forget it. Then two years ago anointed preacher from Malaysia told me my Mary Magdalene, the God the Father voice and the Jesus voice that were speaking to me were demons and that I was not to speak to them. I obeyed.

Possessed by demons.

On four occasions I have been delivered of demons. On only three of the occasions did I feel any better afterwards. As I have had an addiction to prostitutes I have always had a vessel full of all sorts of demons that have sex with me and fill me back up again. Touch wood by faith I have conquered that addiction so in months to come when I am delivered again they will stay out of me.

Much of the Christian community does not believe in demon possession. Fewer still believe that a born again Christian can be possessed. It’s as if demons disappeared 2000 years ago.

I have a number of demons still in me. I have to spend time on my faith, in the Word and in prayer and healing before I am ready for them to come out.

At present I know a man with a spirit of murder in him and he wants to kill me. Of late this has caused me some distress and put me into a depression. I have to avoid a whole block of my city for my life’s sake and this has upset me. Demons are real. Most times it’s a demon that is speaking to a Schizophrenic. But it’s not easy to turn that voice off even for a Christian with that illness.

Fear, lust and a spirit of Masons have been cast out of me. The Masonic spirit leaving made my whole head seem free. The spirit of fear had a big difference on my personality and is trying to re-exert itself through the man who wants to kill me. The Lord himself lifted the spirit of lust one day after I repented in tears and touch wood I have not been with a sex worker since.

Contacting the dead… trips to heaven and hell.

Often times when in conversation with a stranger the Holy Spirit will direct me to ask them if they have a question for Jesus. Sometimes the person will ask how a dead relative is. On many occasions Jesus will give me a message to share about their relative. On some occasions the relative has spoken. I know in the Law a medium is condemned yet each time it comes a surprise to me the question, and in almost every case the person’s eyes fill up with tears. I know this could be a familiar spirit but on most of the occasions I can describe the house the relative has in heaven and all the furniture and they are able to confess that features in the house I describe are exactly what they person would love but never had the money to own on earth or something like that. I see visions of the house and the people when this happens.

On many occasions I have been to heaven. I have been into a throne room at one time and seen a big ball of light like I think Isaiah saw. I explain that in more detail in my article Modern Prodigal Goes to Heaven. One time I saw a whole park full of children and Jesus told me it was all the children in heaven that had no parents. Most of them were abortions on earth. That was a memorable trip. One time in heaven Jesus put a big diamond the size of a soccer ball in my hand. Later on the Father said that diamond that I held would run the USA government for 200 years. He told me that was what he thought of money as the wall I took it out of was hundreds of feet high and miles long all of which were diamonds of that size. Bill Gates with all his wealth wouldn’t even be able to buy one of them, such is the verse Jesus said, “Beware of greediness, life does not consist of the abundance of one’s possessions.” And also when He said, “what does it profit a man if He gains the whole world and loses His own soul?” That wall of diamonds showed me the reality of those two verses.

Yeah I am no one great. But each time I have been to heaven it has been memorable for me. A month ago I took a guy to heaven in his mind in a vision where he met his wife that had died a year before. He saw her sitting with Jesus in a meadow full of yellow flowers and a waterfall in the distance. She smiled at him and spoke to him. I was pleased that he could tell me what she had said and done as I watched it happen and was able to confirm it.

I have been to a part of hell for two fifteen minute trips. It’s not a place you want to visit. If you are reading this and you are not a Christian, I invite you to email me and tell me so, I have a few passages in the Bible I want you to look up.

Seeing evil spirits… seeing angels… seeing Jesus… seeing people out of the Bible.

I have only once seen an evil spirit of lust on a girl. It did not look nice. The best I can say is it looked like one of those dragons, people like to collect in popular shops. It gave her an attraction to all the guys and she was very attractive also. One of the Christian men I was with pointed it out and when he did I saw it.

I once asked Jesus, “How come I see angels all the time and I don’t see demons?” He said, “Matthew if you saw the demons around you most of the time, you would not get any sleep.” I laughed, understood and never once complained since. Sometimes I have discernment of spirits and I can tell the name of a demon a person has inside of them, but I don’t see the demon.

However I have seen so many angels it would take a whole article to share all of them with you. Five times I have had the honour to see Michael the archangel. All but one time, He was in the company of Jesus. One time a few weeks before I went to hospital he was with me walking down the street. I saw two big guard dogs back off when I walked toward them as confirmation he was with me. The same day I had a six year old girl confirm that he was with me and when I told her Michael was a fighter, she started to have a play fight shadow boxing into the thin air as her mother wondered what had come over her daughter. With my two confirmations I felt convinced yes on that day I walked with Michael. I have felt a strong presence of God in a church and many times seen angels worshipping God in my church. On some special occasions to me I have seen women angels dancing.

Six years ago I was on a beach at 2am in the morning and Jesus had told me to move away from my family and go 400 miles and to Sydney where I had no friends and 800 miles from my son. On that night I asked Jesus where He was I was so caught up in my love for Him. He told me He was just beyond the breakers. I knew sharks like to cruise right behind the breakers for fish and night time was the wrong time to be swimming there, but I pushed the fear aside and went to swim out. As soon as I took a step toward the water the water receded 100 feet. I asked Jesus what was going on, and he said, “Not tonight, but you will meet me real soon.”

I said, “You said in the Book of Revelation that you are coming soon and that has been 200 years. How soon is soon?”

He said “very very soon Matthew.”

Three weeks later I met Jesus in Sydney in the flesh. He was dressed as a hungry, homeless man, dirty and forsaken by men. He did three things is my presence that were miracles to prove that He was who I thought He was. One of them was disappear into thin air.

I have seen Jesus in heaven, seen Him on many occasions in visions on earth and not less then ten times with one of my good friends. I once have been knighted by Jesus with a sword. I do not know what that means. When He spoke for ten minutes in the flesh on His ideas on the Gospels, the speech was so rich, so profound that I know it would take many years’ study to understand the depths of it.

In heaven I have met people out of the Bible. I have also met Daniel and the Apostle John on earth in visions on earth. I know I will have some role to play in these end times simply because both these men wrote visions of prophecy about these last days. Daniel came and comforted me in hospital.

Seeing evil spirits, seeing angels, seeing Jesus and dead people would have a sane person committed to a psychiatric ward of most hospitals, but to me these are regular experiences and you can’t have me put away because at present my mental health workers are very happy with my state of health. I am in a major depression and they can’t even tell.

As you can see I have not covered all of the topics. The rest: of them being:

writing five pages without editing except a proofreader… writing a warning from God to a nation… being delivered from demons… having demons speak to you… having a demon pretend to be the Holy Spirit and tell you lies and direct you to do things that you assume are God telling you to do… staying up for three days and three nights without sleep… sleeping for two days straight… being so depressed you can’t even wash clothes, shower, shave or cook for yourself… will be covered in part two.

Demon Possession Causes All Types of Mental Illness Including Schizophrenia

What causes mental illness and its various types? The answer lies in demon possession. When a person has mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar, major depression, psychosis, multiple personality disorder, or has suicidal thoughts, the individual has quite literally “lost their mind” to invading demon spirits.

Demon spirits pray on those who are weak mentally, physically and emotionally. When a person suffers a trauma in their life and they are unable to cope with the trauma mentally and emotionally, a part of their soul chooses not to have that experience and splits off causing “soul fragmentation”. This leaves a vacuum or space for demon spirits to reside within the soul and influence the mind and feelings of the person involved.

These demon spirits enter through holes in the aura when the person is emotionally vulnerable and seeks to “escape” their own life. Take for example, marijuana usage in teenagers who are often emotionally troubled and seek to escape the reality of their troubled lives. Taking drugs such as marijuana causes holes to appear in the aura. It is also a form of “escapism” that fragments the soul, leaving the individual open and vulnerable to demon possession. And this is why schizophrenia has been linked to marijuana usage. It is not the marijuana itself that is causing the schizophrenia, it is the invasion of the demon spirit that hi-jacks the soul and mind of the troubled teenager, after they have used marijuana.

This is why we see ordinary young adults stay healthy all their lives – free of schizophrenia – and then all of a sudden have schizophrenia after taking marijuana. It is because they have lost control of their mind due to demon possession.

Severe or more extreme types of mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar, personality disorder, multiple personality disorder, psychosis are caused by a large number of demon and earthbound spirits entering the soul of the person involved. The person has literally lost control of their soul and mind to malevolent or negative spirits. Major depression, suicide and suicidal thoughts are also caused by demon or earthbound spirits influencing the mind and the emotions of the person’s soul they inhabit.

Most people on earth have one or more earthbound or demon spirits within their soul, that has gained entry into their soul either during this lifetime or been carried over from a past life. Yet because demon spirits can only possess a soul according to the degree to which it has chosen to give away control of its soul, most demon possession is only partial in nature and the demon spirit expresses itself through the identity of the human ego. Most people cannot distinguish between what is of their own human ego, which is negative and fear-based in nature, and what is of a demon spirit that has infiltrated their soul under the guise of the ego.

The website mentioned below will give you important tools and information on this subject, information that has been channeled from Jesus Christ and other spiritual beings of Light, to help free you of the clutches of this demonic scurvy that has raged the souls of the people on earth. It is time to take back control of your soul.

How Can You Stand to Be Online With a Migraine?

Many people who deal with frequent migraines post online during the attack. We often receive negative comments from others when we do this. To someone who only gets an occasional migraine or never gets one at all, this behavior must seem counterproductive. Once you understand why we get online, maybe our behavior will make more sense.

We don’t sit at a desk

Most of us use laptops, iPads, or cell phones to post online. The majority consensus was that we could rarely post online if we were forced to sit up at a computer. We are able to use portable devices that allow us to rest in a reclined position or even laying down in bed.

We make accommodations

Many of us have learned to dim the brightness of the screen to accommodate our light sensitivity. Several others wear tinted glasses or sunglasses to reduce our discomfort. A lot of us use this accommodation even when not experiencing a migraine because we’ve discovered that it helps prevent some light-induced migraines.

Not all migraines cause pain

Another theme I discovered is that we all experience varying degrees of pain, from the “silent migraine” with no pain at all, to the excruciating “10” that drives us to seek emergency medical help. A common misconception among non-migraineurs or those with rare episodic migraines is that all migraines are horribly painful and force the person into bed. That is simply not true, especially for people with Chronic Migraine. Migraine attacks actually begin hours before pain starts. Veteran migraineurs with decades of experience have learned to distinguish those early warning signs. Some of us “old-timers” will report a migraine and treat it in the early stages long before we get to the “oh my God, kill me now” stage. That doesn’t mean we never get horrific pain. Certainly we all experience some attacks that put us in bed for days, unable to interact with anyone.

We cope with the pain

For those of us with frequent or daily migraine, there was also a consensus that we’ve learned how to “push through the pain”. What might be a “10” for someone who has never experienced a migraine might be perceived by us as a “6”. Pain perception is very relative. If you’re always in pain, sooner or later you learn how to accomplish a lot of things despite the pain. Posting a comment online becomes “child’s play” compared to working, housework, child care, and the million other things we must do to keep life going.

We get bored

Another theme was boredom. Anyone who has experienced the slow recovery from influenza or a broken bone can relate. There is only so much resting and “taking it easy” a person can do before they get a little stir crazy. Despite the pain, nausea, light and noise sensitivity, after a few days we get bored just like anyone else recovering from a long illness. We are stuck at home, often in bed, isolated from family and friends. We are sick of Sprite and saltine crackers. The internet migraine communities offer us an outlet for this boredom. It is often our only entertainment and social life.

We need support

Speaking of social life, these support communities also offer us something else — validation. Most of us learn quickly that the world really doesn’t want to know every time we get a migraine, especially if we have one most of the time. Healthy people get tired of hearing about our pain, especially when there is nothing they can do to help. But what about our fellow migraineurs? That’s a completely different story. Want to whine about that non-stop migraine triggered by the latest storm front? There are thousands of people online who know exactly how you feel and will support your right to bitch. In fact, you can go ahead and post that ugly selfie of you with an ice pack wrapped around your head. We will tell you that you are a beautiful warrior. Experiencing support and understanding from others helps us not feel so isolated. When we don’t feel alone, we can borrow strength from each other to keep searching for better treatments. It motivates us to find good self-care strategies.

In short, when we post online that we are having a migraine it helps us stick with treatment, take better care of ourselves, experience less pain, and improves our mental health.

Hair Loss – The Causes of Extreme Hair Loss

Hair loss in men, women and children can be caused by a host of reasons. Sometimes the reason is right in front of your eyes but because you are not looking for it, you do not see it. If you can identify the reason for it falling out, then it makes it easier to do something about it. Most everyone with thinning hair wants to stop it from falling out, but they do not know what to do about it. The biggest reason is because they do not know what is causing it to fall out. Let us explore the causes…

Some balding is temporary and some is permanent. Both can be caused by similar reasons. For example, several months after a major surgery or illness, your hair could suddenly fallout in large clumps. This problem can be contributed to the trauma of the surgery or illness and is usually temporary in this case.

Hormonal changes can cause thinning hair as well. Having an overactive or underactive thyroid may cause your hair to fall out. This usually can be corrected by treatment for thyroid disease. This can occur in males or females especially if the hormones, known as androgens or estrogens are out of balance. Having your doctor correct your hormone imbalance may stop your hair from thinning.

Pregnancy can cause hair loss in many women, especially approximately three months after they have had their baby. This problem can also be contributed to hormones. Higher levels of certain hormones during pregnancy cause the body to keep hair from falling out. Once the hormone levels return to normal after the pregnancy, the hair starts to fall out again. This could cause the hair to come out in clumps until the normal cycle of hair growth and loss takes place.

Medications can also cause balding. This problem is normally temporary and your hair will return, provided you stop taking the medication. Some medications that can possibly cause hair loss include birth control pills, antidepressants, large amounts of vitamin A, high blood pressure medication, medication used for gout and blood thinners or anticoagulants. If you are experiencing thinning of your hair, take note to see if you have started or changed medications. You may have to consult your doctor asking him/her to make a change in your medication to another that will not cause thinning of the hair.

Infections can also cause hair loss. Bacteria or fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss mostly in children. This can usually be treated with antifungal medications. Most hair loss in children is usually temporary, once the cause is found and treated.

Another cause of balding is underlying disease, such as diabetes or lupus. Hair loss can be an early indication of disease and is essential that it be paid attention to if just for this reason alone. If this is the case, it is important to catch the disease early. Once the disease is treated, the hair should stop falling out and regrow.

Middle Ear Infection Remedies (Otitis Media)

It’s a fact that prescription drugs can cause more harm than good for the treatment of middle ear infections. Fortunately there are many natural middle ear infection remedies which you can use to boost your immune system and relieve the painful symptoms of ear ache, muffled hearing, swollen glands, fatigue and fever.

Here are some of my favorite middle ear infection remedies that I use with my patients:

Essential oils

Warm a teaspoon of vegetable oil like olive oil, and add to it 3 drops of tea tree and 2 drops of lavender. Soak a piece of cotton wool in this and use to plug the ear. You can also use a massage oil around the ears, neck and cheeks. An effective massage oil combination is 1 drop of thyme, 3 drops of tea tree and 2 drops lavender.

Garlic is great for ear infections. Some of my elderly patients swear by peeling a clove of garlic, wrapping it in gauze and placing it in the affected ear overnight. You can put some olive oil in the ear first to prevent any skin irritation. You can also drip some warmed garlic oil or liquid garlic extract in the ear every 2-3 hours. These middle ear infection remedies should not be used if the ear drum is perforated.

Improve your diet

An imbalanced diet with too much refined food causes an accumulation of toxins and a breeding ground for bacteria. It is important to base the diet around fresh fruit and vegetables, quality proteins, natural oils and small amounts of whole grains.

Iron phosphate and potassium chloride are good middle ear infection remedies that can reduce inflammation and mucous in the ears.

Antimicrobial herbs like olive leaf, echinacea and golden seal are powerful middle ear infection remedies that can help reduce bacteria and viruses in the ears

Hot compresses, heat bags or hot water bottles on the affected ear can ease the pain of ear middle ear infections.

Raise the head of the bed

Raise the head of the bed or crib to help the ear tubes drain naturally. Children rarely complain of pain in their ears during the day because they’re upright and the tubes are draining freely. When they lie down at night, the tubes fill, causing pain

Drink plenty of fluids

The very action of swallowing helps the ear tubes to open and drain, so drinking lots of fluids – preferably warm or hot, will help.

Use a vaporizer or steamer

It’s also helpful to use a vaporizer in the room at night. This will help to keep the air moist and encourage the thinning of fluids in the ear.

N-acetyl cysteine

One of my favorite middle ear infection remedies is N-acetyl cysteine – a natural amino acid supplement that can help reduce the severity of ear infections. It has been shown to be helpful in keeping mucus fluid and thus helping the ears to drain. 200 mg twice daily is recommended as a starting point.

Fight colds

For some people who are prone to recurrent ear infections after they get a cold it may be worth treating the cold vigorously with immune boosting nutrients, herbs, a vaporizer and if necessary a decongestant, especially at night.

Vitamins and minerals

Immune boosting nutrients like Vitamin A, C, E and zinc are essential middle ear infection remedies important in treating and preventing ear infections.

Treat allergies

Allergies are one of the major predisposing causes of ear infections. When you or your child’s respiratory passages become clogged with mucous in reaction to an allergen, the ears are more likely to harbor infection. Dairy products, wheat and eggs are the most common food allergens, however environmental allergens like dust mite, animal hair and pollen can also be a problem.

The Different Levels of Hearing Loss

The different levels of hearing can play a major role in your life. Eating a balanced diet, avoiding drugs where possible and maintaining a healthy bio-system (good circulation/healthy blood) will all contribute to minimising hearing loss. A good bank balance (minimal stress and worry) is also a good thing, and although that pretty much goes without saying, you will see why my website is all about those things: health and business combined with a little history helps you to keep your feet on the ground and to enjoy life.

Enjoy life! It’s a terrific goal, but some effort is required. So let me start by making you feel better.

Hearing loss is not unusual in anyone over 60 years old, and affects many younger people. Hearing aids do NOT make you old: they solve a problem, and they do it now better than at any time in history.

Let’s do a quick resume of why hearing deteriorates, and how it can affect our daily lives. I shall do this in each of the three main categories of levels of hearing.

1. Mild Hearing Loss.

Over the course of human history the human hearing system has been investigated, examined and is now largely understood. It is evaluated in dBHL (Decibel Hearing Level), which is not the same measurement as the Decibel, but similar: it varies from the Decibel sound level depending on the frequency of the sound. In human beings, it is more commonly for us to lose our high frequency hearing first, which has the effect of handicapping us by making speech NOT inaudible (we hear speech), but unclear (voices may sound muffled or people seem to mumble). This is because the consonants, which effectively punctuate the words we hear, are, in the main, high frequency sounds.

So Mild Hearing Loss is where you find some difficulty hearing sounds between 25dBHL and 50DbHL. Speech is commonly around 40-45DbHL. When you have a hearing test, your hearing thresholds are recorded on and ‘Audiogram’, which is measured in dBHL. To give you some idea about the lower end of such a loss, the sound of a rustling leaf, or rubbing together a pair of dry hands, is about 20 – 25dBHL.

Common causes of mild hearing loss are: age, long-term use of ‘Salicylates’ (a good example of a salicylate is Aspirin), and drugs which thin the blood. Sufferers of mild hearing loss usually hear very well in quiet situations: not so well in noisy environments.

2. Moderate Hearing Loss.

This is where there is difficulty hearing sounds between 50dBHL and 70dBHL. Those in this category will experience all of the symptoms above, but will also struggle with groups of more than two or three in quiet surroundings and will find real difficulties hearing clearly in any type of background noise and voices from any distance. This type of hearing is caused exactly as Mild Hearing loss, but with longer exposure to drugs, exposure to noise (military veterans, workers in noisy factories etc.), perforated eardrums and bloked ‘Eustacian Tubes’/Sinus problems.

3. Severe Hearing Loss.

I think you are getting the picture now. Severe loss is between 70dBHL and 90dBHL. Those in this category will experience difficulty hearing speech in most situations. Causes include all of those already mentioned: commonly applicable to the more elderly members of the population and more often where noise damage, bad episodes of childhood illness such as ‘Mumps’ and damage from use of drugs (‘Mycin’ drugs, chemo-therapy drugs are often contributors, and are known as ‘Oto-Toxic’ drugs) applies.

4. Profound Hearing Loss.

This applies to anything worse than 95dBHL. To give you an example, the sound of a jet aircraft flying directly above your home would produce a dBHL of approximately 110 – 120dBHL. Certain childhood syndromes, genetically passed on, can produce such levels of hearing loss and it can happen from birth. If you wish to research syndromes which contribute to hearing loss, any search engine will do.

And finally… if you feel you have any problems hearing at all, be good to your body and see an Audiologist. Hearing tests are usually free, and any Audiologist worth his salt will explain exactly where you are with your hearing, and what options are available to you.

A Remedy For Stammering

Stammering and stuttering are speech impediments that a lot of people have. Most people assume that these are childhood speech problems that go away through time. They think that a person can just grow out of stuttering and be able to speak fluently when they are an adult. However, this is not the case. For children who stammer, they grow up to do the same. It is a speech problem that needs to be addressed.

If you are an adult who has problems with stammering or stuttering, then you know how this speech impediment affects your life. You don’t have the confidence in your speech that ordinary people do. You worry about meeting new people while others don’t have to. You are made fun of and ridiculed for your stammer but you cannot control it. You know that you need a remedy for stammering.

A great way to remedy your stuttering is to practice. Practice makes perfect that holds true for speaking as well. If you have an interview or a date coming up, practice what you are going to say beforehand. This will give you an opportunity to control your pace of speech so you can bypass your stutter. Another way to control your stammering is to take a class such as yoga. Yoga teaches you how to regain control over your body and your mind and also how to put your nerves behind you. That way you will be able to speak fluently and also have complete control over your speech. Try these remedies today.

Deaf/Mute Sign Language Awareness

The deaf, or the “deaf mute” or those suffering deaf mutism as is often described are just like any other person in the society. That they can not speak or hear words audibly does not exclude them from enjoying the basic necessities of life as well as achieve their ultimate desires in life. This piece is written to raise the level of awareness through asking the necessary questions that can have a positive impact in the way the ordinary person on the street relates to the concept of deaf and deafness.

The deaf, in very simple terms communicate through sign language developed as a factor of necessity. This is because unable to communicate through hearing and speaking, they depend largely on signed language and body language communication. It is an established fact that there are hundreds of deaf sign language versions throughout the world. Also, these language versions were evolved wherever deaf people live. This seems natural since there has to be a way of communicating with the person who can neither hear nor speak using audible words.

The need for greater awareness of the dilemma of the deaf is on the fact that through ignorance, many people are confused when confronted by the fact that they have a deaf child born to them and are unable to fully integrate with such people. There is little anybody can do at the moment beyond the scientific and technological inventions that have helped to develop special hearing aids.

Among several attempts at promoting the development and use of the sign language is the development of sign language cultures in different countries, ‘Theatre of the Deaf’, signed interpretation of music – which provides a beautiful and expressive means of portraying musical lyrics, emotions’ and the rhythm for the ultimate enjoyment of both the deaf and hearing people. The impact of the signed interpretation of music alone has been proven to enable both types of the people to live together with better understanding and mutual delight.

The challenge is to know how best to move such a success story to the next level. What can we do to creative a more inclusive and accommodating environment where understanding and appreciation of the deaf is more of a nom than an exception? Since deaf people are often surrounded by a larger majority of hearing and speaking people, they are often a minority. However when the society appreciate their unusual qualities and talents can we start to achieve a more inclusive attitude towards them.

Learning the sign language and making it available in the curriculum of schools and colleges is a vital starting point. If a child grows up to realise that the deaf is no different to the rest of the human population other than the ability to speak and hear, the child’s attitude to the deaf would be totally different and more accommodating. This has been shown in homes where deafness affects a child, other children are known to be more accommodating to the idea than children who have never met or seen a deaf person. Siblings of deaf people are known to have acquired the skills of sign language more easily as they have been able to communicate with their deaf sibling through that medium. Besides, people travelling or visiting foreign countries have been shown to depend on sign language as the only means of expression.

Summary and Conclusion: While learning the sign language may be seen as an added load to some people, the difference between having the knowledge and not having it can mean a lot when faced with some unforeseen reality. The sign language is fun to learn and anybody can and should endeavour to know the basics of how to communicate with the deaf or hearing people alike.

Fluency Disorders: Stuttering vs Cluttering

The title of this article Fluency Disorders: Stuttering vs Cluttering is not to advance an oppositional position between stuttering and cluttering. And the word cluttering as used in this context is not about “things” that take up space but serve no useful purpose. Cluttering is a fluency disorder. Several clinical studies have shown that stuttering and cluttering are two distinct and different fluency disorders. According to several research studies the two most common problem of fluency is stuttering and cluttering (Daly, D.A., 1996) and (Myers, F.L. & St. Louis K.O., 1998).

Cluttering is the orphan of speech-language pathology

From a historical perspective the syndrome now known as cluttering did not appear on the radar of speech-language professionals until the mid-sixties. In 1964, a researcher named, Desco Weiss published his classic text on cluttering. According to Weiss, cluttering has always been with us. Weiss described cluttering as a neglected stepchild in the family of speech-language pathology (Weiss, 1964). In 1981, almost two decades later, David Daly, from the University of Michigan, said that cluttering was considered the orphan of the speech-language disorders. Recent studies support the belief that very little had change in the forty years. Even today, cluttering is still an obscure term for many American speech-language clinicians.

A cursory examination of the available literatures show that earlier texts either described cluttering in a superficial manner or it is omitted completely. This omission is passed on by many contemporary college texts, in which cluttering is still treated as the “stepchild” of the fluency disorders family. For example, a college text used to research this article; Survey of Communication Disorder (Lue, 2001) devotes eight pages to explain stuttering and allocated only a half page to explain cluttering. The primary reason for this void in recognition is that cluttering is so difficult to diagnose. For instance, some individuals who clutter sometime stutter, as well. And the reverse is also true. Therefore, differential diagnosis can be problematic for the most seasoned speech-language diagnostician.

Fluency defined

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) defined fluency as the aspect of speech production that refers to the continuity, smoothness, rate, and/or effort with which phonologic, lexical, morphologic, and syntactic language units are spoken. Dysfluency, on the other hand, is defined as a break in the continuity of producing phonologic, lexical, morphologic, and/or syntactic language units in oral speech (ASHA, 1999).

Stuttering as a fluency disorder is well-known and widely studied. On the other hand, cluttering is almost unheard of by the general public and is often misdiagnosed or under diagnosed by the professional speech community, this is especially true for academic and the mental health community. Both stuttering and cluttering is a fluency disorder, however, the two disorders are not the same. Cluttering involves excesses breaks in the normal flow of speech which result in disorganized speech planning, talk too fast or in spurts, or even being uncertain of what one wants to say. The individual who stutters often knows exactly what he or she wants to say but is momentarily unable to say it.

What is cluttering?

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association: “Cluttering is a fluency disorder characterized by a rapid and irregular speaking rate, excesses disfluencies, and often other symptoms such as language or phonological errors and attention deficits. To identify cluttering, you must listen to un-stuttered speech of the speaker.” The individual who clutter would exhibit a rapid and/or irregular speaking rate; talks too fast, sounds are jerky with pauses that are too short, too long, or improperly placed. The list of cluttering symptoms and the remarks expressed by those with the disorder explain, in part, why defining cluttering is so problematic; too often it is very difficult to know which symptoms are essential to cluttering and which are incidental.

It is very important that individual suspected of cluttering be diagnosed accurately by a qualified speech-language clinician before seeking or providing therapy. The diagnostic process can be extensive and may require two or more sessions. It is also recommended that contributions and reports from other professionals, such as classroom teachers, special educators, and osychologists be included. The assessment should naturally include the fluency problem, but also any co-existing speech-language, pronunciation, learning, or social problems.

The clinical diagnostic process of a typical cluttering problem is illuminated if the individual exhibited any of the following characteristics: confusion, disorganized language or conversational skills, often with difficulties finding the right word. The individual is unaware of his/her fluency and rate problem. The individual experience temporary improvement when asked to “slow down” or pay more attention to speech, such as mispronunciation, slurring of speech, or omitting non-stressed syllables in longer words. For example, “ferchly” for “fortunately.” Also, these facts should be taken into consideration; blood relatives who stutter or clutter; social or vocational problems resulting from cluttering symptoms, and learning disabilities unrelated to impaired intelligence.

In addition, classroom teachers should watch out for these symptoms which often associated with cluttering; sloppy handwriting, distractibility, hyperactivity, and limited attention span, difficulty with organizational skills for daily activities, and auditory perceptual difficulties (St. Louis & Myers, 1995). Often cluttering will go unnoticed until the stuttering diminished spontaneously or from speech therapy.

Finally, what is equally frustrating for speech-language clinicians are the absence of self-awareness and the laid-back attitude of many individuals who clutter. Their self-monitoring skills for speech and social situations are seriously impaired and highly deficient.

Adenoid Removal – What is an Adenoid Removal?

If you’ve ever experienced the discomfort and embarrassment of tonsil stones, you may be wondering if adenoid removal would be beneficial for you. With removal of the tonsils and associated structures seemingly so common, many sufferers of tonsilloliths, or tonsil stones, consider surgery an attractive option.

Tonsil stones are often felt as a mass or glob of “something” stuck or caught in the back of the throat. Sufferers may initially suspect that a piece of food is lodged in the throat. A closer inspection of the mouth structures may reveal tonsil stones, pale-colored masses embedded in the pitted surface of the tonsil or adenoid. Infection and bad breath may accompany the stones.

Treatment for tonsilloliths may vary with the severity of the condition and the preferences of the health care professional providing treatment. Available options include self-removal with a curette, surgical removal of the stone, pulsating irrigation (water treatment), laser cryptolysis, and complete adenoid removal, which is the most aggressive of the treatment options.

Adenoidectomy involves the total removal of the adenoid glands. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Adenoid removal may involve the use of a curette to remove the tissue or a microdebrider followed by cauterization. A packing with gauze or similar material may be employed to control bleeding.

While the appropriate treatment is best determined by individual examination and consultation, signs that may point to a need for surgical treatment include snoring, difficult breathing, and sleep apnea. Often adenoid removal is not considered unless the condition is both recurrent and interferes with the patient’s ability to function normally.

Severe Vaginal Atrophy – Are You Treating it the Way You Should?

One of the most common unspoken conditions to plague women today is severe vaginal atrophy. This disorder affects nearly every woman upon entering menopause. It also could occur at any other point in your life when the estrogen levels drop. However, it is an extremely treatable disease.

When the vagina starts to atrophy, it first loses moisture. The lining becomes thin and fragile. It also may shrink somewhat. Generally, it takes 5 to 10 years for the condition to become severe. Most women do not notice that they have it until sex becomes impossible.

Some of the early symptoms include vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse. As time goes on, it becomes more painful. You may even bleed slightly following intercourse.

However, this condition can be reversed. It’s caused by a drop in estrogen levels, which is normal during menopause. Most doctors will treat it using a low dose of estrogen therapy. Many women have also found relief using natural hormonal replacement therapy is helpful but perhaps not without side effects.

These natural remedies are herbs approved by the FDA. They contain phytoestrogen. This plant based form of estrogen is extremely similar to what your body would produce. Some would say it’s superior to the type created in the laboratory.

Before you start any treatment regime, it’s best to talk to your doctor. Herbs will work the same as medication, so they do have the chance of interacting with prescriptions you currently take. However, there is no need to live with severe vaginal atrophy.
