Breast Club

The first rule of Breast Club is that you don’t talk about Breast Club. Books, midwives, health visitors, friends, relatives and people you meet in the street cannot prepare you for the nightmare that can be breastfeeding. I have been lucky, no mastitis, no cracked nipples and loads of milk but it’s still been a far cry from the pictures of contented mother and baby that grace breastfeeding literature. It wasn’t the pain so much as the feeling that I was a milk machine, a slave to a small screaming thing who would be obeyed by my leaking breasts if not willingly by the rest of my body. Small thing feeds on demand, and he is very demanding.

When he was 6 weeks old he had a growth spurt that had me feeding every hour, day and night for a week. I just wanted to hide far away from him at the time. But now he is nearly 3 months old and the bleakness of it all seems very distant. Yes he still feeds when he wants, sometimes for a minute, sometimes for an hour. But now my let down reflex is in good working order. It no longer hurts and there is nothing quite like the surge of pure love I feel for him when he breaks his latch to beam a big milky dribbly grin at me. So my advice to others in the same situation is to give up on trying to do anything for yourself and just pretend that you want to be a milk slave, it is your pleasure to drop everything for a feed. This mental switch is what saved my mental health. It’s worth the effort to give your child the best start in life and the difficult bit is not for ever, although it may seem like it at the time.

Choosing Modern Looking Children’s Bed Sheets

Children’s bed sheets are just one item of bedding that you will need to buy for the nursery or bedroom. With an almost baffling array of designs and colors you can be absolutely certain of finding just the right look to change or enhance the appearance of a room that has just been redecorating or is in need of a décor pick-me-up. Do check the material that is used and opt for higher quality to ensure that the sheet is both comfortable and long lasting otherwise it could lead to an irritable night’s sleep for your child and, ultimately, for you.

Ensuring Comfort

Comfort needs to be the main priority when buying children’s bed sheets. No matter how old your son or daughter, the sheet is the first thing that you will lie them on at night. Bassinettes, cribs, and toddler beds all need a good quality sheet to help ensure that their occupants enjoy a good night’s rest in comfortable surroundings. Beyond children’s bed sheets you will also need to buy quilt covers, blankets, pillows, and consider buying a throw to create the perfect finish for the bed.

Picking The Right Design

Once you’ve chosen children’s bed sheets that are comfortable and durable you can move on to picking the right design that will match the room in which they will be used. Children’s bedrooms are great fun to design and decorate because you don’t have to hold back in terms of unique designs or the use of color. You can combine traditional with modern, neutral with vibrant, and plain with motif. You can basically do whatever you want in order to create an appealing room for your child.

The Multi Purpose Bedroom

A child’s bedroom is unusual because it can have numerous different uses. Not only is it the room in which your son or daughter will be sleeping but it can also be a room for playing, developing personal skills with other children and peers, and eventually a room where they will do homework and study for school. As such, finding the right design usually means combining various items with different attributes.

Be Creative

Duvet covers can be equally vibrant and colorful. They can include geometric designs or they can be customized with traditional children’s motifs such as cars, angels, or zoo animals. Try to choose those designs that capture the imagination of your child the best. Every boy and every girl is different and their parents tend to know them best so get your kids involved, sit down, and choose the best looking and most appropriate children’s bed sheets and other bedding items for their room.

Children’s Bedding Sets

Sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases, pillows, cushions, and throws can all be added to your child’s bed to offer them a luxurious and beautiful looking finish to their bedroom. Ensure that the material used is good quality so that it offers durability and comfort and once you’ve ensured that, you can move on to choosing the design that is most appropriate for the décor in the room and for the tastes of your child.

Combi Zeus 360 Convertible Child Car Seat

The Combi Zeus 360 Convertible Car Seat. Wow. This seat is absolutely fantastic. Don’t get me wrong because nowadays what with safety laws and legislation and the thought of being sued, things like child car seats are as good as they have ever been. But this Combi Zeus 360 delivers absolutely.

Now I have to be honest, and admit that the Combi car seats are not an inexpensive brand. The Combi seats are however renowned for their quality. The moment I saw one, I wished I could have it. However, by the time we saw the Combi Zeus 360 we had already bought a Britax marathon 70, and in fairness, that is a fantastic seat as well. Our decision was whether to buy another Britax, which we knew was a fantastic seat, or pay slightly more to get the Combi Zeus 360 and take a chance on our new addition not really taking to it.

Game over. We bought the Zeus and have not looked back. There are so many fantastic features with this seat that I don’t know where to begin but he’s a brief list:

Combi Zeus 360 Features

  • It has an amazing 360 turn option
  • Tru-Safe Side Impact Protection, also known as EPS
  • Plenty of padding with the 5 point harness system
  • Is good for 5-33lbs when set to rear facing
  • and, 20-40 lbs forward facing

The thing I really like though is the way the 360 turn works. It is so smooth and flawless and means it is so much easier to get your child in and out of the car. Unlike normal car seats, which tend to be in their static position, facing either forwards or rear, this seat has a turn option, which allows the seat to be turned to face the door. This, of course, makes removing your baby from the car an absolute piece of cake. As well as this fantastic feature, your baby will find it so comfortable that you might be like me and find the tantrums seem to magically decrease. On the other hand, maybe I was just lucky.

The Combi Zeus 360 also comes with an adjustable infant insert that can be positioned to a 45 degree angle for newborns which is recommended. It also has removable and washable fabric.

Because it is quite a large seat, despite being sold as a convertible it probably isn’t practical for those who like to remove the seat frequently. If you are one of those types you are better off sticking with something like the Britax Marathon 70 which is slightly smaller and easier to handle.

Overall, I can say that this child car seat is probably just about the best one I’ve ever seen. There is some great competition but for me the Combi Zeus 360 is just about the best child car seat around today.

How To Make Twin Babies Sleep At The Same Time

Twin babies mean double the fun and double the trouble especially when you try to get your twins to sleep at the same time. Here are some tips to help you survive this situation.

Create A Soothing Sleep Environment A restful sleeping area helps your twins adjust to a regular sleep schedule. Make sure their room is quiet and dark. Room temperature must be cool. You can switch on a nightlight so you do not have to switch on the lights when you check on them. Playing white noise (e.g. the steady sound of a waterfall, waves or raindrops) will also soothe your babies to sleep.

Make Sure They Get Regular Naps During The Day

Wake your twin babies up at the same time. If one wakes up, wake your other baby. Do not allow baby A to sleep lather than baby B and vice versa. Then, make sure you provide ample interaction throughout the day like playing with them, talking to them or visiting your neighbor, so when it is time for nap time, they are both tired and sleepy. Babies need more sleep than they get at night, if they take naps during the day, they will sleep better at night.

Create A Bedtime Routine

A calming pre-bedtime routine will help you prepare your twins for sleep. Quiet activities like giving them a warm bath and a baby massage, reading a bedtime story in a rocking chair, singing a song followed by a few minutes of cuddling is a good, relaxing routine. A bedtime routine will help signal your twin babies that it is time for sleep and when repeated on a daily basis, your twins will have the same sleep schedule so you and your babies can drift off to dreamland in no time.

Try Swaddling Your Twins

This age-old tradition can help your twins feel safe, secure and eager for sleep. You may use a blanket or even a t-shirt you have just worn so they feel your warmth and your scent. Wrap the blankets or your t-shirts around each baby comfortably. This way, your twin babies will feel a sense of security that they are being snuggled up against their twin inside your womb which helps stimulate your twins to sleep at the same time.

Let Them Sleep Together

Let your twins sleep in the same crib. Most twins feel secure with the presence of their other sibling. They are comforted by touching each other and the close physical contact soothes them. Your twins will try to wrap themselves around each other, crawl to each other and even suck on each others hands while they sleep. Do this until they are three months old. When it is time to put them in separate cribs, make sure the cribs are next to each other so they can still see each other.

Help Your Calm Baby First

When twins rouse from sleep, parents tend to focus on the screamer first. As a result, the calmer baby might feel ignored. Tend to your quiet baby first and make sure he is happy and relaxed before you focus on the screamer. Do not worry about the screamer waking up his sibling since most twins are not disturbed by their sibling’s crying even when they are in the same crib.

They key to making twin babies fall asleep at the same time is by balancing stimulation and relaxation throughout the day. Once established, a healthy sleep pattern is created which is beneficial not only for your twins but also for you.

A New Mom’s Guide to Baby Travel Bags

Probably one of the most surprising things about being a new mum is the amount of stuff you need to lug around just to leave the house with your new baby. It can be quite overwhelming juggling a crying baby, a giant pram, bottles, nappies and toys, not to mention all the smaller items like nappy pins, baby wipes and more. You could carry the contents of a baby supply store with you and still never have just what you need… But with the right baby travel bags, it will be a whole lot easier.

Just some of the things you will need to have on hand at all times:

– diapers

– wet wipes

– changes of clothing

– a warm blanket

There’s nothing worse than needing a nappy pin or a dummy urgently and having to rummage through I gigantic pouch containing a hundred little accessories. Look for as many zipped compartments as possible in any baby travel bag you purchase.

– Wide shoulder straps: The wider the shoulder straps the more comfortable the bag. And all the baby accessories can weight a fair amount!

– Something that is easy to clean: you will be amazed at the way your baby bag will attract dirt and mess. Choose fabrics that can be wiped clean with a wet wipe. Even better if the baby bag can be washed on the hot cycle to keep it sterile inside and out.

– A bag that doesn’t need to be checked: With some of the more roomy diaper bags, you might have problems getting it into the overhead locker.

With so many wonderful bags to choose from, it’s difficult to know where to begin. Depending on how much traveling you intend on doing and your budget, you can find fantastic baby travel bags for under $100. At the cheapest end of the scale, diaper bags for under $10, at the top end, hundreds of dollars for the most fashionable versions.

There’s no need to look dowdy once you have a baby, you just need to look harder for practical yet fashionable designs at prices you can afford. The best choice for a baby bag is something unisex and understated, to encourage your partner to help carry the load.

With the right baby travel bag, traveling with baby can be the wonderful experience it should be!

Establishing a Routine to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night

Most babies wake up at the end of a sleep cycle if they are hungry, uncomfortable or if their breathing is obstructed. Research suggests waking up between sleep cycles to be a vital survival mechanism. If baby’s sleep state was so deep that she could not communicate her needs, then her wellbeing could be threatened. Therefore, parents should not feel pressured trying to get their newborn baby to sleep too long, too deeply, too soon. Between 3 and 6 months of age, a sleep pattern usually begins to emerge and baby may sleep for five hours or more.

For most parents, the two main problems are getting their baby to fall asleep and to stay asleep. Some babies fall asleep easily and stay asleep while others fall asleep easily, but wake up frequently. Some babies go to sleep with difficulty, but stay asleep, while others do not want to go to sleep or stay asleep. Babies that were good sleepers at six months of age may develop sleeping difficulties as they grow older and vice versa. There are all sorts of reasons why babies experience sleep difficulties, but knowing something about the different stages of sleep and what to do if your baby wakes up in the night can be helpful.

Babies experience five cycles of sleep, with each one lasting about one hour. They spend twice as much time in light and active sleep than deep sleep. During the first stage of light sleep, baby’s muscles relax and her eyelids flutter. She may twitch, grimace, suck intermittently and breathe irregularly. If baby is put in her cot at this stage, she may wake up. During deep sleep, baby’s limbs relax, her fists unfold and her breathing becomes shallow and regular. After deep sleep, babies enter the frenzied period of active sleep. During this stage, they grimace and fuss, the muscles tighten and jerk involuntarily, the eyes dart about in all directions and breathing and heart rate become irregular. However, the period between the end of active sleep and the next cycle of sleep is the most vulnerable one.

Most babies whimper and fuss when they wake up after a sleep cycle. However, if undisturbed, they may drift back to sleep again. If your baby should need feeding or a nappy change, keep this as low-key as possible and put her in her crib or cot as soon as her needs have been met. If your baby is not hungry or uncomfortable, do not pick her up, speak to her, make eye contact, put on music or lights or interact with her in any way or she will expect the same treatment every time that she wakes up. Simply place your hand on your baby to comfort her until she falls asleep again. After a few days, she will get used to the new routine and will settle back to sleep again on her own. If you reward your baby with too much attention, waking and play at odd hours may be prolonged into late childhood.

Bedtime routine

The one thing that the sleep experts all agree on is the need for a consistent, predicable, regular bedtime routine. It doesn’t matter what the routine consists of providing the same things happen every night. Your baby will soon learn to associate certain events and situations with bedtime, although it may take a week or two for her to develop new sleep habits. Once a routine has been established, stick with it consistently every night.

Here are a few tips that may help:

o Let your baby have a good kick around to tire herself out.

o Help your baby to relax in a warm bath-when she gets out, the surrounding cooler air will lower her temperature and help trigger the sleep mechanism.

o Massage your baby or read a bedtime story to help her to unwind and relax.

o Put your baby in special clothes that are only used at bedtime.

o Swaddle your baby in a cotton blanket or place her in a baby sleeping bag to remind her of the warmth and comfort of the womb.

o Use key words such a ‘Bed time’ or ‘Night-night’ so that your baby associates them with sleep.

o Put your baby down after winding and before she is fully asleep, otherwise she may be startled to find that your comforting arms are not there when she wakes up.

o Make sleeping in the crib or cot a regular habit.

o Make sure the room is dark and quiet. This helps to establish the difference between night and day.

Everyone has a period of sleep latency before going to sleep, so don’t expect your baby to fall asleep the moment that she is in her cot. Crying for no apparent reason before sleep is also normal for most babies. Sometimes, your baby just needs to unwind after a busy day and crying makes her sleepy.

Botox Treats More Medical Conditions

So far Botox has only been popular for anti-ageing treatments. This exceptionally potent neurotoxin has found a variety of remarkable uses in modern medicine. The toxin was tested in late 1960’s by Alan Scott and Edward Schantz, who then standardised it for therapeutic use. However it was first used in 1980 to treat for conditions as “Crossed eyes” (Strabismus) a condition where the eyes are not properly aligned and “uncontrollable blinking” (Blepharospasm). Botox is approved in more than 75 countries for 20 different neurological indications and approved for cosmetic use in more than 40 countries. Let us see how Botox has transformed the lives of many people.

Migraine: Though the efficiency of Botox as a treatment for chronic migraine is under debate, studies have shown that after Botox treatment the pain caused by migraines are dormant for 3 – 4 months and the patient would hardly need any pain killers.

Back Pain: Traditional pain relief medication for back pain may not be effective on many patients. However initial studies have suggested that Botox injections are safe and provide relief to the lower back area without systemic side effects.

Cervical Dystonia: Also known as Spasmodic   torticollis  is a chronic neurological movement disorder involving the head and neck. Botox treatment is the commonly used to cure this disorder. It disables the movement of the antagonist muscle and allows the agonist muscle to move freely. Patients experience relief for approximately 12 to 16 weeks.

Excessive Sweating: Botox blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the sweat glands and prevents them from producing sweat.

Cerebral Palsy: Botox is injected into muscles that are either spastic or have contractures, the aim being to relieve the disability and pain produced by the inappropriately contracting muscle

Weak Bladder: Medics claim the Botox injected to the bladder wall will improve symptoms in the over 50 age group, impacting on their quality of life. It will assist them to sleep better and be more energetic reducing incontinence and would make a difference to a sufferer’s social life and general health.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A non-cancerous condition which affects half of males over 60 and is caused by abnormally large prostates. When the prostate enlarges, it squeezes the bladder triggering urinary problems, including the need to go to the toilet frequently during the day and at night. It is a progressive disorder which, if left untreated, can lead to the complete inability to urinate. This, in turn, can cause kidney damage. However, a study by scientists in Taiwan and at the American University of Pittsburgh found that just one Botox jab into the prostate eased symptoms and improved quality of life for three out of four men up to a year later.

Should you suffer from any of the above conditions; it is recommended that you consult your physician to get the correct treatment for your medical condition. The physician that you are consulting should be a qualified well experienced physician who has the knowledge and training to administer Botox cheshire.

Discipline and Children – What You Don’t "No" Can Hurt You

Raising children often involves the use of the word “no.” It may be because they are about to do something that won’t cause pain, like splashing in a mud puddle. More of the time the word is used when something is harmful, either to the child or others.

We have two areas of concern. The methods my parents used to discipline us are no longer politically correct. In fact, it’s scary to try and discipline a child because someone, somewhere may think it’s abuse.

This creates the second problem. Children under the age of four don’t always understand why they can’t do something. If they’re anything like our grandchild, tears are involved and possibly a full blown temper fit. We can’t stop because of the sad little face. The danger is real.

Example 1: We have a rule in the house. No balls of any sort are allowed in the kitchen. Second to that rule is there will be no throwing of the ball in the house. Roll it or take it outside.

The kitchen is obvious. If I’m cooking, a could step backwards onto the ball and get hurt. So would anyone around me if I pulled a hot pan off and it spilled. This is a “no” that could hurt all of us. Often the kitchen is blocked off when I’m cooking as a form of prevention. That hasn’t stopped it, but a stern no and pointing a finger out of the room gets her attention.

Throwing the ball may not make sense in the physical pain area. A thrown ball is dangerous to most of the things in our living room and den. However, it could cause pain if one of the things knocked over hit a person. One warning and then the ball is confiscated for at least the rest of the day.

Example 2: While we try to keep harmful products where our granddaughter can’t get them, we are by no means thoroughly toddler proof. This is in part because she’s growing and a safe place last week isn’t so safe this week. If she gets something potentially dangerous we have to take it from her. She may also need to be told not to climb the shelves to get to whatever it was she wanted. We’re also going to have to invest in more “Mr. Yuk” stickers.

Example 3: This is an example I’m still trying to figure out how to handle. Toddlers are like quick silver and can get around even the most desperate grab for a hand. She has to learn to look before she crosses the parking lot. At the moment, it’s a game and it’s one I don’t like. Currently the solution is to carry her. She doesn’t like it, but again, it’s a “no” that could cause harm to both of us. Me trying to grab her and her if a car hits her.

There are thousands of reasons we have to employ that little word. There are millions of tears over the course of toddlerhood because we don’t give in. In the end, it’s worth the tears because it preserves life and prevents harm.

7 Top Ranking Baby Twin Strollers

In the Internet Age one does not have to push around physically from one shop to another hunting for baby twin strollers. Everything is just the click of the mouse away. It is ideal for parent of twins who have little time to spare but want the best for the duo.

There are two styles for transporting babies – tandem and side-by-side. Some strollers are meant for children ranging from various ages but generally the demand is for the twins.

The Graco Duorider is a quality product with a comfortable price tag. It is the perfect choice for those who prefer the side-by-side stroller for the twins. Below the contraption is a spacious basket for storing, the seats are reclining and there is a protective canopy overhead. It can be maneuvered easily and stored conveniently without hassle.

Also in the market is available a stroller frame to which additional seats for two can be attached. Here the advantage is that the babies can be carried from the house to the car and vice versa without having to remove the little ones physically. But the utility is only for a short time. Once the babies exceed 25 pounds this device becomes redundant. But it is of great importance and use during some vital months.

The Duoglider is another popular model with those who like the tandem type of strollers. There are not many tandem type strollers in the market. It is durable, comfortable and convenient for infants as well as older twins. The seats are stadium styled and can accommodate the carrier seats of infants. It has a capacity of seating children up to 40 pounds each.

The Double Umbrella Stroller is lightweight and essential for those having older twins. It is sturdy, the price is easy, slim and lightweight. It can be kept in the car as a secondary stroller when the main one appears too heavy and cumbersome.

The really stylish baby twin strollers come from Maclaren. It is a side-by-side model having a five-point harness system. The seats are removable and washable. The weight is a comfortable 22 pounds.

The Combi Twin Savvy is more expensive than the models of Graco and Kolcraft. It weighs less than 22 pounds and can be adjusted to multiple positions with fully reclining position of the seats. The carrying strap is very popular with parents for loading and unloading to store it. The added feature is an optional acoustic canopy that can relay music for the child while strolling.

Another type of stroller designed in Europe is a side-by-side contraption with the special feature of having twelve wheels. These can be swiveled or fixed for easy maneuverability. The footrests are adjustable and the armrests can be removed if so required. The price is on the high side.

In a stressful life these baby twin strollers are a great blessing for those managing and handling twin bundles of job – whether at home or in nurseries. It is ideal for the person who minds the children.

Agonising Over Whether to Breast or Bottle Feed?

When I was pregnant I wasn’t sure I wanted to breast feed, I had all the leaflets and information given to me by my midwives about breast feeding and despite not having made a decision I was never given any advice on bottle feeding except the cons. I went online and searched breast feeding and bottle feeding and was shocked to discover how this issue tormented new mums and mums to be.

Why we should breast feed is drilled into us whilst we are pregnant yet they do not prepare you for how you will feel if you are unable to. I came across many mums online that for many reason were unable to breast feed and were torturing themselves, they were absolutely distraught and felt like failures.

Early on in my pregnancy I decided that I would wait and see what happened once I had my baby, I was almost certain I didn’t want to breast feed. I prepared myself for both breast feeding and bottle feeding and after reading the basic information on how to do both I thought no more about it. I told my midwife team this too and informed them that I had all the information that I required and if I needed anymore I would let them know. The decision whether to breast feed or bottle feed is yours and yours alone, you should never feel pressured into doing something you do not want to.

In the end the decision was out of my hands. When my little girl was born she latched on straight away and really took to breast feeding. We were then taken to our room and left alone with someone popping their head in every few hours to see how we were doing. I didn’t know how to hold her whilst I breast fed and different midwives told me to hold her different ways which was very confusing, in the end I settled on looking in the book I had been given and just copying the picture in there.

I got myself a little stressed and upset as I was supposed to keep filling out this form every time she fed with how long she fed, everyone kept asking me if she was getting anything and my answer was I don’t know, she seemed to be. By the next morning my baby was a little grumpy but the midwife said she was latching on fine so I could go home. That night my baby cried and cried, I tried to feed her, she would latch on and then just pull away screaming. She eventually fell asleep for a few hours but by 5am the following morning my boyfriend and I decided to try to bottle feed her as we just didn’t know if she was getting anything from me and I was getting very upset at not knowing.

It was the best decision we made, my boyfriend fed her for the first time and she fell asleep in his arms peacefully after taking 2 ounces. Later that day we had a midwife visit and it turned out I was not producing any milk, we were advised by a lovely midwife to carry on bottle feeding and told that their was probably a delay in my milk coming in and if it did come in I could breast feed then if I wanted to.

We continued bottle feeding taking turns and after such a stressful first day with our new baby we settled into a very happy and comfortable routine in the first week. Being able to share feeding our baby was great and I immediately felt the pressure ease off as I didn’t have to do everything myself.

On day seven my milk eventually came in, we had all settled into bottle feeding, our baby girl was happy and thriving and bonding with both me and her dad. Ultimately it was my decision and I decided to continue bottle feeding. My baby is now 5 months and a healthy bundle of joy. This is not a decision I will ever regret and I am glad I did not put pressure on myself to breast feed or let anyone else put pressure on me to breast feed.

I Woke Up This Morning and I Can’t Move My Neck!

Ever wake up with extreme neck pain?

Well if you have, I’m sure you have felt like your neck was stuck, or worse yet, it actually was stuck. When it feels this way, obviously something is going on that shouldn’t be going on, and if you’ve ever felt this way, you know how bad it can get.

So what’s the deal? How can you go to bed one night seemingly fine, and wake up the next morning all locked up, not being able to move? How can this be? Did I sleep in the wrong position?

Usually a lot of questions arise when I consult with a patient who comes in to see me with this type of pain. The main consistent historical finding, or what the patient relates to me is that “it just came out of nowhere”. When this type of unexpected neck pain occurs, when the individual is unable to move their neck when they wake up in the morning, the most common diagnosis is known as “Torticollis”.

Torticollis comes from the Latin words of “torti” which means “twisted” and “collis” which means “neck”. So the words combined literally mean “twisted neck”. Which pretty much sums up the way it looks, and certainly the way it feels.

Another term for this condition is something known as “wry neck”. Basically it is similar to a really bad muscle spasm, almost similar to the sensation of a “Charlie-horse”, but in the case of Torticollis, it occurs in the neck.

Another historical finding, or what the patient relates to me, is the fact that they awoke with it in the morning after sleeping with the air conditioner or cold air blowing in the room in which they were sleeping. Often times as well, you may have just finished having a cold, or flu virus. Lastly, trauma such as a motor vehicle accident may cause a Torticollis as well.

Like I said earlier though, many times torticollis patients don’t really know why or what caused this condition, i.e., they really didn’t do anything to get this, or deserve this. The torticollis is characterized by very sharp pain and spasms, and an inability to move the neck at all, or if you do try to move it, extremely sharp pain is accompanied.

This sharp pain can be extremely limiting, from your day to day activities, as well as your ability to be productive and perform your job.

If you don’t do anything at all, torticollis and the extreme neck pain will ultimately improve over a 2 week period. In my practice, and with chiropractic in general, Torticollis will resolve over a couple of days. If you happen to get better after one or two days (hopefully) without doing anything at all, then you probably didn’t have torticollis.

In fact, I often see patients who have never been to the chiropractor before, because they would rather try to end their pain quickly vs waiting it out over a period of 2 weeks. In this situation, they are so desperate, desperate to resume their fun activities, to just going back to work, or feeling like their old self.

Of course taking prescriptive pain medication is always an option, but many of my patients have the attitude of “been there done that”, they are tired of the way that that makes them feel.

Unfortunately, sometimes torticollis can last longer then a month, and in rare cases even longer, without treatment. So I would strongly recommend getting treatment ASAP.

The 3 most common finding of Torticollis are:

1. spasms of the neck muscles

2. Shoulder, side of the neck, upper back, and neck pain.

3. Neck being twisted to one side of the other, and feeling stuck in this position.

So what are the best solutions for Torticollis pain relief?

Well, ideally not getting in the first place right?

I say that half jokingly, but truthfully as well.

Like anything, prevention is the best medicine, but unfortunately, in the real world, prevention is really hard to sell. Having great posture, great muscle balance, flexibility, endurance, and strength are certainly great prophalactic variables for avoiding torticollis in the first place.

Getting regular chiropractic care is a sure way to avoid ever having acute torticollis as well. But if you happen to be in a full blown episode of acute torticollis, analgesics do help immensely, because a lot the pain is caused from the muscles being in spasms.

Repositioning a Dislocated Shoulder

A dislocated shoulder is not only painful, but is also an injury that must be corrected immediately to avoid any long-term damage. If you throw out your shoulder, then you should do the following.

Always be cautious of a patient’s history! Prior to trying to set a shoulder that has been dislocated you will need to learn the individual’s previous medical history. If dislocation has occurred for the first time, you would want to hurry them to the hospital. It’s hard to say if the dislocated shoulder is the only injury, or if there are additional ones present. It would be wise to leave the first diagnosis up to the doctors.

Ask yourself, “Can I set this dislocated shoulder by myself?” If it has happened to the person before, you can probably re-position the shoulder yourself. This procedure can be performed on the spot if no other severe trauma is apparent.

Determine what type of dislocation has happened. Now that you have discovered that it is not the first dislocation of your patient, you need to see what has been dislocated. You can re-position set an anterior dislocation (the most common) if this is not a new injury for the patient. For a posterior dislocation, which could have been caused by a fit or even electrocution, then the shoulder needs to be reset only while the patient is under a general anesthetic. It is not a good idea to try to set a posterior shoulder dislocation.

Verify that the patient is as comfortable as possible. Of course, there is a great deal of pain from a dislocated shoulder, so be sure they’re as comfortable as possible. They should lie down or sit. Give some pain killers. Apparently even caffeine and nicotine can help with the pain.

Re-position the shoulder. It is now time to re-position the dislocated shoulder. Put the top of the arm so that it is resting and facing downward. It is also okay to bend his elbow or draw it into his chest as well. Create a 90 degree angle at the elbow and rotate the arm in to create a letter ‘l’. Then slowly and gradually rotate the whole of the arm and shoulder out, ensuring that you keep the upper part of the arm as still as you can. Hold down their wrist and push with your other fist on the injured arm. With luck, the shoulder should fall back into its joint.

It is important to know that dislocation of the shoulder is very uncomfortable, but once it is re-set you will both feel a lot happier.

Pain – Shoulder Pain Relief for Injuries & Degeneration Pain

Did you know that according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, over four million Americans seek shoulder pain relief from shoulder problems each year?

This number may sound alarming to you, but the fact of the matter is the shoulder is one of the most movable joints in the body, therefore making it one of the most potentially unstable.

The correct shoulder pain relief plan can be determined depending upon what kind of injury or condition you experience. Only your doctor can decide which shoulder pain relief plan is best for you. Most shoulder pain problems are attributed to two things:

1). Injuries and/or Overuse

2). Degeneration of the tendons, joints and tissues

Shoulder Pain Relief for Injuries & Overuse

Many people who injure their shoulders need immediate shoulder pain relief. Injuries, such as a dislocated shoulder and a shoulder separation can be extremely painful.

o Dislocated Shoulder. When the arm is pulled backward and overwhelms the muscles, dislocation and pain can occur. If you dislocate your shoulder, in addition to the pain, you will notice a lot of swelling and bruising. Your shoulder might feel numb and weak, as well. To receive shoulder pain relief from a dislocated shoulder, a doctor must push the ball of the humerus back into the socket of your shoulder joint. Then, you must wear a sling to rest your shoulder to heal and mitigate your pain.

o Shoulder Separation. Shoulder separation occurs when the ligaments that hold the collarbone to the shoulder blade are completely torn. Shoulder pain relief from a separation is simple: your arm among other prescribed treatments must remain in a sling until it heals.

People who suffer from either one of the aforementioned injuries can find immediate shoulder pain relief by applying ice to the wounded shoulder for up to 20 minutes three times a day. Your doctor will more than likely prescribe painkillers in order to receive even more shoulder pain relief. Physical therapy in many cases will also be recommended. One word of advice, keep moving your shoulder ever so slightly or you run the risk of frozen shoulder which is a whole different scenario to deal with.

Shoulder Pain Relief for Degeneration of the Tendons, Joints & Tissues

Many times, people seek shoulder pain relief due to the wear and tear of the tendons, joints and tissues. Tendonitis, arthritis and bursitis are common problems that cause inflammation and great amounts of pain. Most of the time, folks can find shoulder pain relief by taking Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil).

The first step to receive shoulder pain relief is to visit your doctor. Your doctor will lead you in the right direction toward the shoulder pain relief you need.

Peritonsillar Abscess

What is a peritonsillar abscess?

The peritonsillar abscess is the most common complication of tonsillitis (infection of the throat) and the bacteria most frequently involved in this type of Abscess is the Streptococcus.

An abscess is a collection of puss that forms and accumulates near the site of infection. It happens because of the spread of the infection to the soft tissue located around the tonsills. This disease is seen more frequently in adults and rarely in infants or teenagers.

What are the symptoms of a peritonsillar abscess?

The abscess can cause a variety of symptoms like intense throat pain (sore throat), inflammation of the throat and blockage. If the throat is blocked, then swallowing, speaking (muffle voice also known as “hot-potato” voice) and even breathing becomes difficult. Also high fever and chills may be present, ear pain on the affected side and/or trismus (muscle spasm in the muscles of the jaw).

What are the risk factors to develop a perintosillar abscess?

There are certain risk factors that make one more prone to a get a peritonsillar abscess such as gum infections (gingivitis or periodontitis), chronic tonsillitis, smoking, infectious mononucleosis, chronic lymphocitic leukemia (CLL) and stones or calcium deposits in the tonsills (tonsilloliths).

Usually, the diagnosis of a peritonsillar abscess is based on the history and the physical exam during the consultation of the patient. The diagnosis is usually made easier since swelling and redness on one side of the throat near the affected tonsil suggests the abscess. The uvula (structure that hangs from the middle of the throat), may be shoved away from the swollen side of the oropharynx. Also, sometimes if the doctor touches the tonsil with a tongue depressor, he/she may see puss draining from the site of infection.

Lab studies, such as X-rays, CT (computed tomography) scan of the neck or MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging) are not usually required unless other upper airway diseases are suspected (epiglotitis, retropharyngeal abscess).

What is the treatment for a peritonsillar abscess?

There are several options for the treatment depending on the severity of the case. One of treatments consists of puncturing the abscess with a needle to withdraw the puss into a syringe. Also, an incision and drainage using a scalpel to drain the puss can be used.

Antibiotics will be administered usually through an I.V., if the patient is very ill, have trouble swallowing or have other medical problems such as diabetes, the patient should be admitted to the hospital. But If the abscess drains well, then the patient can be discharged home with a checklist consisting of “alarming signs” such as bleeding, trouble breathing or swallowing, difficulty speaking, drooling, high fever and chills, which would mean that the problem got worse and that the patient’s life is in danger.

A Tonsillectomy may be needed in those cases where there is an obstruction of the upper airway, or history of chronic tonsillitis and patients with a previous episode of peritonsillar abscess.

What are the complications of a peritonsillar abscess?

The complications of a peritonsillar abscess can be major and all of them endanger the life of the patient. This complications are airway blockage, bleeding from erosion of the abscess into a major blood vessel, dehydration from difficulty swallowing, a deep neck abscess that could reach the site where the heart is located (mediastine), pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis (bacteria in the bloodstream).

This disease should be treated by a specialist, in this case an ear, nose and throat surgeon (ENT Dr.).

So, if you are experiencing a severe sore throat, difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking, drooling or other potential signs of upper airway obstruction, call your doctor immediately!
