About Back Pain

Pain in the back comes from many different sources including the nerves, from the joints, the muscles and even from the bones themselves. There are also many different kinds of pain that can be felt from chronic back pain to sharp stabbing pains. It can be like a burning sensation or just a dull ache. It can be in one place or for some people it can move around.

The type of pain is normally split in to different categories. Neck pain, lower pain, upper pain and tailbone pain. These can also effect down in to the leg and foot causing tingling and numbness. It is also split in to categories based on the duration. Less than 4 weeks is classed as ‘Acute’. 4-12 weeks is classed as ‘Subacute’ and greater than 12 weeks is classed as ‘Chronic’. It goes without saying that it can be very frustrating not knowing the best method to relieve the pain.

Lower and Upper Pain Causes

There are many different causes including upper back pain from stress. Stress was only brought to life in the 1930’s by Hans Selye. Stress can cause people to unconsciously tighten up parts of the body which over time will effect the muscles and cause pain. Another cause is the skeletal muscle itself. This can include muscle strains, muscle spasms and muscle imbalances.

One of the main causes of lower pain is from the joints of the spine. This effects 1/3 of people with the lower pain and also in the neck caused by whiplash. These joints become displaced or trapped following a shock or a jolt. Other causes include disk herniation, disk degeneration, joint disease, trauma and cancer.

We will now look at some different treatments that are available to you. The first is short term relief. You can find short term relief with medications like pain killers, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory prescriptions. Heat therapy is quite useful for back spasms. Testing has shown that heat therapy is good for acute and subacute lower pain. On the other hand Cold Compression Therapy has been useful for upper back pain relief.

The next set of treatments are known as Conservative treatments. Exercises have shown to be very effective at reducing pain. An effective stretching routine is almost essential in any kind of treatment. Some eastern styles, including acupuncture has shown to be useful for back pain. It is also worth while looking in to the Alexander Technique. Popularized in the 1920’s it is all about correct posture of the spine and has been successful at eliminating all kinds of problems.

For more severe cases, you may also consider surgery. Surgery will normally only be used for the worst cases such as disk herniation, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis or compression fracture.

Herpes Zoster Shingles – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Herpes zoster is commonly known as shingles. It is also known simply as zoster or zona. Shingles or herpes zoster is a nerve infection that results from the reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. The chickenpox virus (varicella zoster) continues to reside in a dormant state in the body’s nervous system after an episode of chickenpox. It can go on to cause shingles many years after the chickenpox infection.

The factors that cause the virus to be reactivated are not clear. We only know that the virus breaks out of nerve cell bodies and travels down the nerve to cause a viral infection of the skin in the vicinity of the nerve. It is possible that a lowered immunity may trigger the shingles outbreak. Illness, stress and trauma may also trigger herpes zoster. Cancer, AIDS, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, immunodepressants and cortisone can also make people susceptible to shingles.

Herpes zoster or shingles causes more pain and less itching than chickenpox. In the early stages of shingles, a person may feel a burning or tingling sensation on the skin. The skin becomes extremely sensitive on an area on one side of the body. The painful sensation persists for one to three days, after which a rash develops in the same area. This may be accompanied by a headache or fever.

The rash soon develops into blisters containing clear fluid. The blisters later turn yellow or bloody before forming a crust or scab. The blisters usually heal after two to four weeks, leaving scars and skin discoloration.

Shingles is often very painful because the virus travels along the nerve to the skin, causing damage and inflammation to the affected nerve. The pain can be so severe that painkillers become necessary.

Shingles or herpes zoster usually affects the trunk and buttocks, but it can also appear on the face, neck, arms or legs. Blisters that appear on the tip of the nose may indicate possible eye involvement. Shingles on the face near the eye must be treated immediately to prevent possible permanent eye damage.

Herpes zoster usually clears on its own in a few weeks. However, a shingles sufferer may require pain relievers to ease the discomfort. Cool compresses may also bring relief. If the infection is diagnosed early, oral antiviral medication can be prescribed within 72 hours from the time the rash appears. Antiviral medication does not cure shingles, but it helps to heal the rash more quickly. The severity of the symptoms will also be minimized. Antiviral medication can also prevent painful complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

A corticosteroid may be prescribed along with painkillers to reduce inflammation and pain. If postherpetic neuralgia develops, antidepressants and anticonvulsants may be of help.

Back Pain – Review of Mayo Clinic Report on Back Pain

The Mayo Clinic recently completed a report on back pain and it’s causes. According to this report four out of five adults will experience back problems sometime in their lives. This is pretty dramatic numbers especially when you factor in all the costs associated with treatment, medication, surgery, recovery, therapy and time lost from work. I know just in my own situation costs for surgery, doctors visits, therapy, lost job time is in the thousands multiply this by the millions who are suffering from an aching back and according to one estimate the cost is $85 billion and growing.

So what are the causes? According to the Mayo researchers there are a number of causes including:

1. Muscles and ligament strains caused by improper lifting or a sudden awkward movement.

2. Herniated Disc; Cause when a disc bulges out due to strains. This was my problem, herniated disc in the lower back..

3. Sciatic: When the bulging disc puts pressure on   nerve  roots ( pinched   nerve ). Yeah I had that.

4. Arthritis:

5. Scoliosis and/or un natural curves in the spine.

6. Osteoporosis; When the bone loses calcium becomes brittle and breaks.

What can be done to reduce this tremendous cost? Clearly the major way to reduce or eliminate back problems is to follow a regular exercise program. Time and time again in report after report exercise is the most highly rated way to relieve a bad back and prevent it from coming back.

One of the top rated programs is called the Lose The Back Pain System developed by therapists and doctors of the Healthy back Institute. This program has helped thousands by strengthening muscles and eliminating muscles imbalance.

As someone who has suffered with a bad back and who has endured months of physical therapy and an operation, I can tell you there are solutions for your discomfort.

Stuttering In The Workplace

In a recent survey of people who stutter, 86% of respondents agreed with the statement, “Stuttering has, at times, interfered with my job performance.”

Stuttering and other fluency issues can cause issues in the professional world on several levels. Often the speech difficulty itself isn’t the issue. Rather, the person who stutters may lack confidence in their ability to communicate, and refrain from saying what they want to say in certain situations or to certain people. Often the individual has had a lifetime of stuttering but has never sought the services of a speech-language pathologist. Their confidence is down. In their mind their stuttering (or dysfluency) is not nearly as obvious to the listener as the individual things. They are hesitant to speak in front of others. This hesitancy in speech can greatly affect overall communication and subsequently, job performance. In today’s business world, public speaking is required in most positions. Public speaking can be everything from the manner in which one communicates with their boss and colleagues to the formal presentation to present your product or service.

It’s never too late to get help from a corporate speech-language pathologist for fluency issues. The speech therapist can work with the person who stutters on several levels, teaching techniques to modify stuttering and increase overall fluency. Often, the speech pathologist will also provide counseling designed to build confidence so that the person is better able to speak their mind, with or without a stutter. Through practice the person that stutters can learn to control their speech and gain greater confidence. The very first step is the telephone call.

We receive calls from individuals that stutter quite frequent. Often it is the occasional stutter but other times it is more significant. Last year we received a call from a family member on behalf of their loved one that was dysfluent (stuttered). After obtaining the necessary information from the family member, I asked to speak with the individual that would be receiving the training. Sadly, I was unable to understand even his name on the telephone. Fast forward that story to today: that individual is completely fluent when we speak on the telephone! He has truly mastered the techniques that help him to control the stuttering. We have most definitely impacted his personal and professional life.

The most important point is that it is never too late to learn the strategies to control the dysfluent speech patterns.

Easy To Understand Information On Sleep Apnea Symptoms and Treatment

One of the common sleep disorders that commonly occur is sleep apnea. It is defined as the cessation of air flow at the mouth and nose for at least 10 seconds during sleep. Typically, the affected individual is middle-aged or elderly male with a short neck who is mildly to moderately overweight and hypertensive. However, this kind of sleeping problem also occurs in young adults of on both male and female, older women and lean individuals. The best prevention is maintenance of an ideal body weight.

Sleep apnea is often categorized as obstructive, central or mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea or upper airway sleeping problem is cessation of airflow at the level of the mouth and nose, despite persistent chest and abdominal movements. In the central type, airflow ceases at the nose and mouth, and there is no evidence of activity of respiratory muscles. Although this syndrome may appear in otherwise normal individuals, it is often associated with narcolepsy and a variety of central and peripheral nervous system disorders. The mixed type is the most common.

A small oropharyngeal opening may contribute to the airway obstruction. The airway may be narrowed by fat deposits along the pharyngeal wall of obese persons or by nasal obstruction caused by mucosal congestion, thickening, polyps, or a deviated septum. The narrowed airway increases airway resistance and enhances its tendency to collapse during sleep. Also predisposing the oropharynx to collapse during sleep is enlargement of the tonsils, adenoids, base of the tongue, uvula or soft tissue of the nasopahrynx. This type of sleep disorder is also found in patients with COPD.

Sleep apnea symptoms include periodic arousal from sleep. The progressive asphyxia may cause awakening or arousal to a lighter stage of sleep. Fragmented sleep occurs, which prolongs the duration of apneic episodes and produces more severe ventilator impairment. Loud snoring with interrupted periods as breathing ceases is noted. Snoring is often described as loud and so disruptive to family comfort that the individual is delegated to a remote part of the house. Aside from that sleep that is accompanied by jerking and thrashing movements are noted.

Sleep apnea treatment includes weight reduction but sometimes it does not alleviate the symptoms. The patient will be advised to avoid alcohol and drugs that cause respiratory depression because they impair arousability. Plastic bite blocks are used during sleep to hold the patient’s tongue forward to prevent occlusion of the airway. Aside from that, surgery is also done to remove obstruction or tracheostomy is recommended if highly needed.. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) through the nose with the use of ventilator during sleep has resulted in improvement of symptoms.

The prognosis of sleep apnea is good, especially for those with the mixed or obstructive type. If detected early, treatments can be instituted to prevent the more serious cardiovascular complications. That is why when your partner or someone in the family complains of symptoms of this kind of sleeping problem, you must be able to seek medical experts immediately.

Dust Mite Allergies

With more then 10% of Americans and 80% of the population of the world allergic to dust mites, these small creatures cause a lot of trouble. Mites are also the cause of most asthma and breathing problems…making them especially troublesome to the elderly and the young. Did you know a high concentration of mites in your home can cause you to develop a mite allergy?

What are they?

Dust mites are microscopic bugs that live by eating the dead skin and dander every living being sheds regularly. While the mite itself is harmless, his excrement and dead skin are not. Many people experience an allergic reaction when they inhale a protein found in the feces of these tiny insects. The reactions to a dust mite allergy can range from itchy eyes to a sever asthma attack.

Where do they live?

Dust mites can live anywhere but are especially fond of your bed. Did you know that mites in pillows that are over 2 years old comprise up to 10% percent of the weight of the pillow? With that many pillow mites it is no wonder you can’t sleep. There are over 10 million mattress dust mites in your bed also.

Eeeww! Makes you want to rush out and buy a new bed, doesn’t it!?

Before you do, you need to know you also have carpet mites. This means every time you walk across the floor, millions of them (and more importantly their feces) are launched into the air…triggering your allergies.

They also live in the drapes, in the couch, on your pets, and on any fabric surfaces in your home. They are everywhere!

How to kill them

While you CAN kill dust mites…it is not an easy task. Here are some tips to get you started on the road to eliminating them:

Use a mite proof mattress cover. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to thoroughly vacuum the mattress and the floor. Then spray the mattress with a dust mite spray to kill them. Once that is done, put a dust mite proof mattress cover on the bed to keep them out.

1) Wash

Wash all of the bedding (including the pillows) in very hot water. Hot water(130F) and freezing kill dust mites. Bedding should be cleaned at least every two weeks, and a mite spray can be used between washings. You also should get pillow covers for all of your pillows to eliminate pillow mites.

2) Use an air purifier

There are many great air purifiers on the market that will help to eliminate mites in your home. Using one will help mite allergy sufferers a great deal.

3) Freeze toys

Place children’s stuffed toys and anything else that can not be washed into the freezer for 24 hours. Mites can not tolerate extreme temperatures…so freezing will kill them.

4) Use dust mite cleaner

Wipe all surfaces (including the floors) with a mite cleaner. These cleaners kill the mites as well as keep them from getting into the air like simple dusting can do.

5) A/C filters

You will need to use a HEPA A/C filter and spray it regularly with a mite spray to help eliminate them in the A/C system. You can also remove any vents for your central a/c unit and spray a mite spray inside as far as you can.

I hope this information on dust mites has been informational for you and helps you to get rid of them in your home.

Advice to Parents on Childhood Measles Part I

Measles  is caused by a virus of the influenza family. The initial  measles  symptoms are a bit like a bad cold or flu, but with a rash! The vast majority of parents do not know what  measles  really is, other than being a childhood illness. They know it has a rash and is infectious, but that’s about it. They have probably never seen it and don’t know anyone who has had it. Most doctors would not recognise  measles  symptoms until the rash appeared, never having come across it. This is due to the  measles  vaccination program which was superseded by the MMR vaccine.

I have even heard of parents arranging  measles  parties, where young children are sent to visit others who have  measles  in order that they catch it. This is going back to the immediate post World War 2 era when immunity was gained by catching the disease. I was brought up in the 1950s and early 1960s and remember mumps parties and German  measles  parties so that children would be immune to these diseases as adults, but not  measles  parties.

The reason for this is that mumps can damage the male reproductive system ( and, not so well known, the ovaries as well) if contracted after puberty, and German  measles  is very dangerous to the developing fetus. In children, however, they are relatively mild diseases. Painful and uncomfortable, perhaps, but not what you would call killer diseases. German  measles  is not a type of  measles . The word ‘German’ probably comes from a Latin word, germanus, meaning ‘similar’ since the symptoms are similar to those of  measles .

Measles  kill, so we never had  measles  parties. In fact back in the 1940s and 1950s it was a major killer. In England alone 5,677 children died in the 1940s. Nobody wanted their kids to catch  measles  back in these days. I have read that  measles  parties were common then, but I never came across one. We were always told to keep away from anyone who had  measles  – at least until they went back to school. Some never went back.

Since the  measles  vaccine, which became available in 1963, and MMR which was licensed in the USA in 1971 (1972 in the UK), the disease has become uncommon in developed countries, and parents have become blasé about it. This is the only reason I can think of for them concluding that  measles  parties are better for their children than the vaccine. If it does not kill, it can have some very nasty side effects. It is without a doubt the most dangerous children’s rash-producing disease.

Measles  is still one of the major causes of death in children worldwide (over 600,000 have been reported) and it is almost as contagious as smallpox. Children have around a 99% chance of contracting the disease if they come into contacted with an infected person. The main cause of death in around 60% of  measles  cases is pneumonia.

If it does not kill your children they have a high chance of hearing problems, and worse, a much higher than average chance of contracting meningitis or encephalitis. The chances of this are only 1 in a 1000, but you don’t want your son or daughter to be that one. I know, because my son was that one. He contracted meningitis and encaphilitis shortly after receiving a  measles  vaccination, but I still prompted my daughter to allow her son to have the MMR vaccine. The disease is far more dangerous than the vaccine. He had it and all was well. My son’s story is on my website.

In part two of this article, I will explain the symptoms and in what order they can be expected, to help parents who are unsure what they should do or when to call a doctor.

Acupuncture For Pain Control

Chinese medicine or acupuncture is a substitute form of treatment that uses tactically placed tiny needles within certain parts of the body to encourage healing. This Process arose in China well over three thousand years back.

Study on Chinese medicine has uncovered it launches hormones and dynorphins. Additionally, it impacts pain conception as well as pain producing messengers in your body. It’s considered that acupuncture includes a primary impact on the central nervous system characteristics. Advantages of acupuncture for pain control electric therapy is going to be included below.

Acupuncture has gradually made its distance to the western globe. Certification from the World Health Organization as the therapy technique for forty various health care issues such as long-term pain has provided trustworthiness to acupuncture.

Forms of acupuncture for pain control backed up by study:

Migraine mild to severe headaches, Anxiety headaches, Severe neck discomfort, Mid back agony, Side-line joint soft tissue injuries, Bone and joint discomfort, Nerve neuralgia, Pelvic Suffering, Fibromyalgia syndrome, Post surgical discomfort.

Precisely what are the dangers?

Chinese medicine done with a experienced specialist is accepted well plus is commonly really safe. These measures below ought to be practiced:

* Speak to your physician about acupuncture for pain cures. They are able to most likely help find a good acupuncturist.

* Guarantee the acupuncturist uses ideally disposable needles or at minimal sanitized needles.

* Confirm the protection of any herbal medicines provided to you. It’s best that you should buy your personal name brand tablets for safety causes.

* When considering any supplements engage with your physician and pharmacist about relationships to drugs along with other health conditions you might have.

* Advise the acupuncturist of your respective medicines and health background.

Look for a licensed and qualified acupuncturist. Below are 2 that you may confirm:

* National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

* American Academy of Medical Acupuncture.

Adverse events of a small nature are typical yet more severe forms of adverse events hardly ever occur. A few of the minor effects consist of needle pain, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, minor bleeding, and bruising. Fainting feeling and pneumothorax had been very rarely related to acupuncture for pain management.

Acupuncture for Pain Management is believed a secure treatment. Plenty of medical doctors give acupuncture credit rating to be an excellent cure as well as other forms of remedy for discomfort. Chinese medicine may be used in conjunction with suction cup treatment.

Regularity of treatment plans

Duplicated treatment therapy is required for ongoing pain alleviation. The normal treatment plan generally will include 3 to 10 one hour practice sessions.

Price tag and insurance protection

Price for each treatment may differ from forty five to one hundred dollars. Chinese medicine for pain control isn’t usually included in insurance however, you need to seek advice from your insurance policy to your particular situation.

Advisable limitations for Acupuncture treatment

A few of the advisable limitations include pacemaker, seizures, bleeding disorders, using blood thinners, infectious disorders or disease of the skin, and intoxication through drug or alcohol. Extreme caution must be used in being pregnant plus some areas must be definitely avoided to stop stimulation of delivery too soon.

Acupuncture for pain management has in the past been enclosed with skepticism however it continues to be increasing in reputation for an option method of therapy.

Common Non-Invasive Treatments For Sciatica Relief

Sciatica is characterized by pain in the lower back and thigh region that radiates along the sciatic nerve and often down the back of the leg. Although it’s a relatively common ailment, it also excruciatingly painful and often debilitating.

Each patient is different, but the possible causes for sciatica are nerve damage due to a ruptured lumbar disk, inflammation from some diseased condition, or pressure on the nerve. Often simple movements or friction on the nerve cause sharp piercing pain. Sciatica treatment varies from traditional remedies such as rest and over the counter non-steroidal pain medicine to advanced remedies such as acupressure, Biofeedback, yoga, deep tissue message, and chiropractic manipulations. Here is a list of non-invasive treatments for Sciatica.

Acupressure works by releasing blocked energy forces. Practitioners of this type of treatment believe as the ancient Chinese did, that the body is controlled by a force — chi — and when that force is blocked, pain, nerve and tissue damage results. Acupressure uses pressure over strategic body points to release the blocked chi. Once the energy is moving freely, the pain should subside.

Biofeedback is using the mind to control the body. This is useful when stress causes muscle tightening thus pressing on nerves. Those employing this method of mind control in treating illness believe that the mind regulates all facets of the body and when it is programmed with the right information, it will heal itself. In order for this to work patients must be tuned in and sensitive to what messages their aches and pains are telling them. In other words, they understand that pain is the body’s signal that something is not right. That something could be stress.

Yoga is dedicated to mind over body similar and so may sound similar to biofeedback. Yet, it takes this commitment further than merely listening to the body and acting accordingly; yoga is a life style. There are specific stretches and poses designed to strengthen muscles by applying both mind and body — thought and action — simultaneously. Breathing exercises is part of the regime to keep both mind and body aligned while directing certain exercises toward elimination of sciatic pain. Yoga is a way of treating the whole body. When the body is well, it can alleviate specific pains such as Sciatica.

Deep Tissue massage

Deep tissue massage loosens up stiff muscles deep inside the lower back that may be interfering with the sciatic nerve. Relieving the spasmodic muscles may lessen the tension on the nerve and allow it to heal. This has a soothing overall effect when done properly. Therefore, If nothing more traumatic than pinched nerves is causing the pain, the muscles will relax and the pain will gradually cease.

See Your Chiropractor

Time is of the essence when dealing with sciatica. If you are dealing with this type of pain, your first call should be to your chiropractor. In addition to spinal manipulation, a doctor of chiropractic may prescribe a combination of the above methods. Spinal manipulation is one of the best treatments for long-term relief of Sciatica because when the bones are properly aligned the nerve pressure is relieved.

A chiropractor is also trained to look for the root causes of your pain, which can include cancer or serious vertebrae damage. Although these diseases account for only about twenty percent of all sciatica cases, it is important to see a doctor that can properly diagnose them.

Cure For Stuttering Techniques

The cure for stuttering is still unknown. According to the Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of stuttering is “to speak with involuntary disruption or blocking of speech (as by spasmodic repetition or prolongation of vocal sounds).” The involuntary disruption of speech is what has baffled speech pathologist and research scientists for years. Both parties believe they are getting closer to finding the cure for stuttering techniques.

There is some belief that the trait for stuttering may lie in cells in the left hemisphere of the brain. Researchers think one are tries to communicate with another area and something block the transmission. The left hemisphere of the brain is responsible for language development. The damage caused by the transmission appears to be minimal, and children can overcome stuttering with conventional therapy.

Stuttering cure techniques have been established to help patients deal with stuttering. The techniques range from breathing skills to social interaction skills. These techniques are not proven effective for every patient, but have been proven to lower the amount of time the patient spends stuttering.

Stress, caffeine, anxiety, emotional connections, nervousness, and sensory overloads are a few of the most popular triggers of stuttering attacks. These symptoms respond back to the notion that there are chemical imbalances in the brain. The symptoms for stuttering are similar to the symptoms of depression, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). The medicine used to treat stuttering is sometimes used for patients with migraine, depression, and/or anxiety history.

The cure for stuttering techniques is advancing each and every day. In 2004, two scientists invented a device to allow stutterers to speak normally. The device is worn as a hearing aid, and it transforms what a stuttering person says into normal conversation. The person hears the correct way of saying something and learns to speak it in the proper way.

The device is not perfect, as neither are medications or therapy, but researchers continue to advance their understanding of the human brain and stuttering. Stuttering cures are being tested on an individual basis before being released to thousands of people.

Even though the anti-stuttering device was the latest break-through in technology for stuttering, there are scientists working to create a better device. Little is known about the device besides that it is being created.

Trial and error is the only thing researcher can to until a cure for stuttering techniques is discovered. It is going to take a long time to figure out a cure for stuttering that works for the millions of people who suffer from stuttering. However, it is believed that researchers, doctors, and scientists are closer to the answer than they have ever been before.

Within the past few years, the direction of study to cure stuttering has been placed on the brain. Neurologists have performed surgeries on patients to get a better understanding of the hemispheres of the brain. A connection between seizure patients and stuttering patients has been determined. Science is soon going to stumble across the answer to what causes a person to stutter.

The Sun Will Shine Tomorrow

It’s a very sad fact that adults are not the only ones who suffer from cancer children get it too. Very young children, who are too young to understand what is happening to them, get it and very often they are far braver than we as adults could ever be. It could be that children have a natural optimism about them. The sun will always shine for them and if it doesn’t shine the next day it is sure to shine that day after. They take great joy in simple things like coloured crayons and scraps of paper. We could learn a great deal from them.

It will come as a great relief to learn that childhood cancer is relatively rare, only 14 out of every 100,000 children in the US is diagnosed with cancer each year. Some of the most common types are leukemia, lymphoma and brain cancer. In teens one of the most common cancers is osteosarcoma, which is bone cancer. Most cases of childhood cancer arise from non-inherited mutation in the genes of growing cells. The process is random and unpredictable so there is no effective method of preventing it. In some cases children who have been treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy for prior cancer have an increased risk of getting cancer, which just doesn’t seem fair, does it? Cancer is difficult to diagnose early in children, as the symptoms often resemble other conditions, it is only sometimes that a doctor will be able to pick it up as cancer during the regular check ups.

Once cancer has been diagnosed it is important to go to a centre that specialises in paediatric oncology for the best possible all round treatment for your child. Treatment for children includes chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Leukemia and lymphoma are the least likely to be treated with surgery as they are linked with the circulatory system. Solid tumours can be removed relatively easily via surgery, which is then used in conjunction with either chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Bone marrow transplants are carried out when the cancer affects the functioning of the blood cells; this is often done in conjunction with chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is therefore used mostly as a complimentary tool to get rid of any lurking cancer. It can be given intravenously, orally or intrathecally or into the spinal fluid. Radiation is very commonly used in the case of children. A stream of high-energy particles or waves is aimed at the cancer area and they destroy or damage the cancer cells. It is also used in conjunction with chemo or surgery.

Children should be involved with their own cancer treatment. They should be kept informed about the facts and progress and all effects should be explained to them in language that they can understand. The primary goal is to prevent fear and misunderstanding. You may find that older children may feel responsible for the cancer, as if it is their fault somehow. The psychologists and social workers that are part of the cancer team can really come to the fore at this moment and help reassure them. They can also visit the school and chat to teachers and classmates about the cancer and explain things to them in a friendly way.

All of this comes from and I would just like to add a quick spot of information on some of the most common types of childhood cancers. Leukemia: cancer of white blood cells. The most common childhood cancer. A large amount of abnormal white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow, they crowd the bone marrow and flood the blood stream. This interferes with the production of other types of blood cells and anaemia develops as well as other bleeding problems and an increased risk of infection. Leukemia makes up roughly 25% of childhood cancers. Leukemia can divided into 2 categories, acute (fast developing) and chronic (slow developing), 98% of all leukemias are acute. Leukemia can be further divided into acute lyphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) depending the specific white blood cells affected. 60% of the cases are ALL, 38% are AML and roughly 2% are chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Lymphoma is the third most common childhood cancer. It is found in the lymphatic tissue i.e. lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, tonsils, adenoids, bone marrow and connecting channels. It is divided into 2 types, Hodgkin’s disease and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Reed-Sternberg cells are found in Hodgkin’s disease, which affects around 3 in 100,000 Americans. Symptoms include swollen glands in the neck, armpits or groin. If it’s in the thymus symptoms will include an unexplained cough, shortness of breath and problems with circulation around the heart. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma targets specific types of lymphocytes; there is minimal bone marrow involvement. It is more common in white males and those with sever immune deficiencies.

Osteosarcoma is the 6th most common childhood cancer and the most common bone cancer. It begins in the bones and spreads outwards unlike a lot of other cancers that begin elsewhere in the body and then attack the bones. It affects teens the most, usually during a growth spurt. It affects boys more than girls and is usually found in the knee.

It seems that childhood cancers seem to really enjoy messing with the growth systems of children. They don’t want the kids to grow up at all. Rather mean spirited really. However, a really solid piece of good news is that childhood cancer has a high recovery rate. Up to 70% of all children with cancer can be cured. Now if that isn’t worth a bright yellow crayon sun with a big smiley face, I don’t know what is.

Give Yourself a Headache

Now I’ve always thought that pain is mostly mental, it just makes sense. I’ve got myself into trouble with that statement before, but here is why I bring it up:

I just finished writing several articles on different Diseases and Illnesses. Topics like: Tinnitus, and Thrush, Lice, Tuberculosis, Porphyria. What is Tinnitus? ricies. Where I’m going with this: After you look at pictures, read and write on these different topics, you start to feel unclean and a bit sick yourself. Why is that? Why is it that some people will faint when they give blood, and others can be surgeons?

A quick question. Do you believe that it is possible to give yourself a headache? Or a sore leg? a headache [], or a stomach or a pimple or a?

It’s an interesting idea but after writing this article I haven’t been able to stop itching my head:

“Pediculosis, is the technical term for infestation of lice. Lice are parasitic insects that live on the bodies of humans. Often times this condition is known by its more common street names: Head/Pubic/Body lice.”

“Most commonly symptoms of lice infestation include itching. If excessive this itching or scratching of the infested areas can cause sores. These sore area’s can become infected.”

There are some pretty nasty things out there. My suggesion: sensitize and sanitize yourself from as many as them as possible. Don’t get curious and look at the pictures, or read the info. Avoid contact with infected people and washing your hair never went too far astray.

Ways To Prevent The Need For Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical therapy to relieve back pain that involves being strapped to a specially designed, computer controlled table to have your spine stretched in minute increments to relieve pressure on compressed discs. The therapy alternates periods of relaxation with periods of spine stretching, officially referred to as distraction.

This type of therapy can become a necessity for those who have injured their backs and prefer a less invasive solution to the pain that what surgery offers.

Generally those who need or seek this type of therapy are people who have sciatica, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs,   pinched   nerves  and bulging discs which can often be caused by bad posture, repetitive stress, acute injury or bad body mechanics.

There’s not much anyone can do about acute injury, but some of the other causes can be controlled to reduce the chance of any type of spinal treatment.

Proper posture can mean the difference between a strong and healthy back and one that’s injured and requires treatment just so you can function during your daily tasks. One point many don’t realize about good postures is that it should always be moving a little bit. It’s when your posture isn’t moving that pain and injury are waiting to happen. And this pain and injury is too often avoidable and self afflicted.

The goal is to work with the natural gentle s-curve of the spine. In its natural s-curve position, the spine is like a spring mount and can handle quite a bit of strain. But if it’s moved out of its s-curve, strain and injury can be magnified.

To make sure you keep your spine in its natural s-curve position, always make sure the small of your back and lumbar region form a slight hollow. As you go up the spine, it should produce a convex area between the shoulder blades.

One way to make sure you keep the s-curve is to keep the muscles strong. If some muscles are weakened, the stronger ones will try to compensate which adds unnecessary strain to your spine.

Repetitive Stress

Certain types of jobs require continually moving the body into a certain position in order to get the necessary tasks completed. A repetitive stress injury with the spine occurs when the back is overused or exerted by having to work harder than it should, stretch further than it should and take on more impact than it should. The stress of the spine isn’t felt initially, but continued movements create constant stress which can cause damage.

The best way to reduce and even completely prevent repetitive stress injury on your back is to practice good body mechanics.

Good Body Mechanics

Body mechanics is the term used to describe the way the body moves. It involves a complex balance between the skeleton, muscles and tendons. Good body mechanics is the process of completing a task while putting as little strain on the skeleton, muscles and tendons as possible.

There are different ways to stand and move and sit that are all related to specific tasks at hand. If you practice good body mechanics and posture, you’ll reduce the chance of ever needing to use spinal decompression therapy.

Cures For Snoring – The Facts

Cures for snoring will depend on what is causing it. Ask your partner to observe you when you are asleep and making noises. They are likely to be awake anyway so may be glad of something to do!

If you snore with your mouth closed, your tongue is likely to be the culprit, but if your mouth is open, your tissues at the back of your throat are probably to blame. If you snore only when sleeping on your back, you should be able to cure your problem by a change in sleeping position. Try sleeping on your side and see if it helps. However, if you snore regardless of what sleep position you are using, then you need professional help and advice. Don’t waste your money on over the counter solutions.

Your dentist may be able to help by fitting a mouth guard similar to that worn by athletes. These devices can stop snoring by opening your airways. They do this by bringing your lower jaw or tongue forward during sleep. Most dentists will suggest devices that are to be worn inside the mouth but in cases of severe snoring, one that fits around your head and chin may be suggested. You need to be very willing to stop your snoring as these solutions are neither attractive nor comfortable. However, you will get used to them and you probably would do anything for a good night’s sleep. If you can’t do it for yourself, I am sure your partner will find ways to show their appreciation of your efforts.

Surgery is an option for some cases although you will probably have to fund it yourself. Most medical insurance plans will not cover surgery to prevent snoring. It also has to be said, that some surgeries only result in short term benefits with the snoring returning after a period of time. You will need to discuss the costs and potential discomfort versus the potential rewards with your doctor or surgeon. Removing your tonsils,   adenoids  and/or excess tissue at the back of the throat are the most common procedures.

Medical techniques are advancing all the time. One cure for snoring which appears promising is the Pillar procedure. Specially trained doctors will be able to do this under a local anesthetic. It involves implanting small plastic implants at the back of the throat. When scar tissue builds up around the implants, this stops the soft tissues from vibrating and so prevents snoring. It is early days and more research and testing will need to be carried out, but for now this procedure does hold out hope as one of the cures for snoring.
