Two doctors who I think may have answers is Dr. Timothy Brantley and Dr Tullio Simoncini.

Dr. Brantley is a popular naturopathic herb doctor that I first saw on Rachael Ray show and later the Montel Williams show who teaches people that “You Are The Cause and You Are The Cure”. In his book titled “The Cure Heal Your Body, Save Your Life” lays out the fundamentals on how he helped several people cure themselves of  cancer  by balancing their internal systems using a proper diet and aggressive detoxification. This process saved hundreds of his patients suffering numerous ailments. And he has helped celebrities like Sylvester Stallone, Kelsey Grammar and other famous people with their health issues.

The keys to balancing your system as established through Dr. Brantley’s book is to remove the toxins that are trapped in your body and simultaneously stop adding more toxins. These toxins are made up of free radicals that wreak havoc on your body. He is confident that  Cancer  is a fungus that can be treated and cured. The most surprising fact is that the treatment is using sodium bicarbonate a substance we know better as baking soda. Yes, I said baking soda like the one Arm N Hammer produces. Through his practice in Rome, Italy, Dr. Simoncini uses sodium bicarbonate directly where the tumor resides in the body. He hypothesized that tumors shared many of the same properties of a fungus; and since sodium bicarbonate was known to be a quick and powerful weapon capable of eliminating fungus he might be able to use it to combat the tumor. Herniated Disc – Relieving The Pain

Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF): Risks of Spinal Surgery

Spinal fusion is an invasive surgical procedure performed to provide stability to the spine in the case of degenerative disc disease, nerve impingement and/or vertebral movement (spondylolisthesis). The surgery entails the removal of a disc or portion of a disc and the placement of a bone graft in the disc space that will fuse the vertebrae together. Additional grafts and hardware may be used on the outside of the spinal column for extra stability.

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is one type of spinal fusion surgery often performed to treat degenerative disc disease in cases where a lot of disc height has been lost. Anterior fusion is performed through an incision in the stomach. There are other approaches that dictate approaching through the back or side, but the anterior approach is favored sometimes for its avoidance of back muscles and spinal nerves.

ALIF is generally not performed on people with spinal instability caused by spondylolisthesis (vertebral fracture and movement) or tall disc spaces. In these cases, a posterior approach may be combined with ALIF to provide additional fusion sites.

Risks

Every type of surgery comes with unique risks. Risks that all types of fusion surgeries share are failure of fusion, bleeding, infection and scar tissue.

Anterior fusion carries unique risks due to its approach from the front of the body. One potential complication after surgery is incisional hernia. A hernia is present when part of the lining of the abdominal cavity, called the peritoneum, pushes through a hole or weak part in the connective tissue surrounding abdominal muscles and forms a sac. Incision of the abdomen can cause such a weak spot or hole. A hernia may be visibly protrude and retract when coughing or lifting. If it is painful to the touch or does not retract when pushed inward, surgery will likely be needed to patch the weak spot in the abdomen. Parts of organs can become trapped in the hole as the sac grows and blood supply can become cut off, strangling that part of the organ.

For males seeking fusion of the L5-S1 disc space, retrograde ejaculation is a concern. The anterior approach to this spinal segment puts the surgeon’s tools in close proximity with nerves supplying a valve that directs ejaculate from the body. If the nerve supply is damaged and the valve doesn’t open, the ejaculate will be directed to the bladder. While this does not pose risks to the man’s health or feeling of pleasure, it provides distinct complications with conception. An exact rate of incidence is unknown, but could be 5% or higher, according to Spine.org, for men seeking anterior fusion at the L5-S1 segment.

A minimally-invasive form of ALIF is available that requires a smaller incision and the use of a laparoscope, or camera, that guides the surgeon’s tools. While this procedure generally promises shorter recovery time and less scarring, it also poses a unique risk to the great blood vessels, the vena cava and aorta, that lay over the spine and travel to the lower body. Normal ALIF may cause damage to these vessels at a 1-2% incidence rate; risk increases with laparoscopic anterior fusion as the surgeon has limited view and mobility inside the incision pathway. Interference with these blood vessels is a major concern as it causes excessive bleeding.

When considering surgery, it is always important to weigh the risks against the possible benefits. While most surgeons boast fusion rates of 95% and higher, studies exist that put the rate much lower. A small study with 85 participants found that overall fusion rate was 80%. The study also specified results by level of fusion; rate of failure was much higher (31%) at the L3-L4 level than at the L5-S1 level (16%). These are all factors to consider when deciding whether surgery and what type of surgery is worth the risk for your unique situation. A Last Resort

Any type of surgery is a last resort, yet not all spine surgeons are hesitant to prescribe fusions. Fusions are mainly performed to relieve pain from degenerating spinal discs. Have you exhausted all other treatment options for your condition?

Unless you are showing signs of major nerve damage (such as impaired bowel and bladder function), surgery should be a long way off. First, months of physical therapy should be performed to strengthen the core muscles that support the spine. You should be tested for muscle imbalances and postural distortions that could have caused excess pressure on the affected disc. A chiropractor or osteopath should check your spine for misalignment and resolve any if found.

Inversion therapy can be pursued at home to increase disc space, or decompression treatments can be sought from a chiropractor with a decompression machine in his or her office. Decompression treatments may or may not be covered by insurance, but they usually cost around $2,000 total without insurance. This is less than the out-of-pocket cost of spinal surgery for most people with insurance.

Back and Neck Pain? Learn If Ice or Heat Is Better For You

Before I go any further, I need to issue a standard disclaimer. Obviously an article like this is not meant to replace the advice you would receive from your chiropractor, doctor or physiotherapist. Be sure to consult with an expert before taking any steps. Common sense prevails!

I got my start as a Paramedic in the Toronto area before deciding to get a Nursing degree at the University of Ottawa. My eyes were set on going to medical school. At some point in my education I had a change of heart and practicing medicine (at least the way we do it North America) no longer made sense to me. Looking back at the skepticism I once had for chiropractic, it’s amazing I eventually chose it as a career. Five more years of school (total of 10 academic years post-secondary) and I was a Chiropractor.

I remember my first back injury like it was yesterday. I was a Paramedic in my early twenties.

I thought I was invincible until that first time my knees buckled from searing back pain. I was out of work, depending on WSIB for income and at times I thought I was never going to get better. It was a long road back to health and I learned a lot.

The question at hand is, “when I have back or neck pain, when do I use heat, when do I use ice and when do I use neither?

It’s a good question and I get asked this all the time. The answer is not that simple. Sometimes I apply ice, sometimes I use heat and most of the time I just leave it alone and do nothing.

2 Rules of Thumb

  • I apply ice from the outside and generate heat from the inside.
  • Most of the time I let my body heal without the use of heat or ice.

Let me explain. Heat feels good. Really good. But when it is applied in the form of a hot-pack or a bath or the ‘magic’ bean bags, it feels good in the moment but it may actually worsen the situation and prolongs the process of healing. I know… it’s hard to accept, but it’s true.

One of the mechanisms your body uses as part of the healing process is increasing blood flow to the affected area. The theory is that more blood flow allows the delivery of special hormones, chemicals, blood clotting factors, immune system activity etc. This extra blood flow is called ‘inflammation’. Inflammation can be good – yes, good. It is part of the healing process. Having said that, when the inflammation accumulates or is excessive and does not reduce, this process stops being beneficial and starts to become… a pain.

Now consider an injured muscle or joint that has become ‘inflamed’ due to your body’s natural response to the injury. The question now is whether to apply ice, heat or just leave it alone.

Consider Heat: The area is already full of extra blood flow, the hot-pack may feel good, but it will bring even more blood to the area. Bad idea.

Consider Ice: Your body is trying to use blood flow and early stages of inflammation to heal the injured tissue. We know that use of ice will reduce the blood flow and reduce inflammation. Should we interfere with mother-nature and possibly hamstring your body’s attempt at healing? Probably not.

Consider Applying Nothing, Zip, Nada: “But it huuuuurts… I want pain relief!”

Rule of Thumb #2

  • Hot-pack: I never use it despite the fact that it feels good.
  • Ice: I will rarely use ice on my own injuries unless there is significant swelling and the pain is severe enough that I would consider taking a pain-killer to numb the symptoms. Ice enables me to avoid the pain-killer. Even then I tend to back-off and let my body do what it needs to do.

There is always a ‘yeah but’. Sometimes we need to act. So here is when and how I will use ice and heat.

Heat: I never APPLY heat. I USE heat. There is an important difference. No heat packs… ever. Let’s say I injure my neck or back working in the garden. Days go by and I am still having back and neck pain. When pain from an injury like this lasts more than a few days, I know I have done some damage to my spine and likely caused some misalignment. I FEEL most of the pain in the muscles surrounding the spinal joints but if the root cause of the pain truly was in the muscles, I would likely fully recover within just a couple of days. The muscles are bracing the spine and protecting it from further injury. When the joints of the spine get locked-up, part of the solution is to get them moving again. Has this happened to me? Plenty of times. Regaining mobility of the spine is key and I do this by walking. When I injure my spine, the worst thing I can do is to lie still as my spine gets even more locked up. I need to keep moving. So I walk as fast as I can tolerate and GENERATE heat from the inside while simultaneously restoring some mobility to the parts of my spine that are now locked-up (by walking… LOTS of walking). My chiropractor (yes, Chiropractors are chiropractic patients too) will take care of restoring mobility to specific spinal joints. Incidentally, I loathe treadmills. I never use them and I never recommend them. I get outside. Cold out? I dress properly. When I am injured in the winter, I over-dress so I can get good and hot. Treadmills cause more injuries in my opinion.

Ice: Ice almost never feels as good as heat but it sure feels good after I have generated a lot of heat on the inside. Ice will help prevent the inflammation from getting out of control especially when there is visible swelling. So if I have injured my back and I am doing a lot of walking and generating a lot of heat, I will occasionally use an ice pack after the walking session to keep the inflammation and pain under control.

OK, last scenario. I wasn’t working in the garden and the injury is not acute. I just have a tried aching neck/back. Usually a good night’s sleep will do the trick. No ice, certainly no heat (other than heat generated from exercise) – I just leave it alone and let my body heal without interfering. Morning comes and sleep brought some deep healing and regeneration to my muscles and spine and all is well with the world. If the pain/discomfort is affecting my sleep I will use some ice before going to bed, ensuring deep sleep and self-healing.

Seven Steps to Use an Ice-pack.

1. No need to buy a fancy ice pack from the drug store. They are expensive and usually they don’t get all that cold. Usually a bag of frozen peas is the way to go. Buy two bags. Why two? Keep reading.

2. I apply the ice where it hurts (there is one exception)… keep reading.

3. I usually put a thin cloth between the ice pack and my skin. Dry cloth acts like insulation. Damp cloth transfers the cold to your skin nicely. No cloth is a great way to damage your skin (frostbite).

4. I leave it there (the ice pack) for about 10 minutes if it’s my neck and 20 minutes if it’s my back.

5. I will wait at least an hour before I do it again and I will generate heat in that hour via walking as described above. I tend to aggravate my back muscles and spine if I try to stretch right after I ice. Not a smart move.

6. When I go to ice again, my first bag of peas has not had time to fully freeze again so I reach for the second bag of peas!

7. For the love of everything sacred, I will not use the peas for anything other than an ice pack. I label them – so someone doesn’t decide to boil them up and eat them.

The exception to the Step #2: If the pain is shooting down my leg ( look-up sciatica ) then I would put the ice-pack on my lower back instead of on the leg. In this case, the inflammation is coming from my lower spine,   pinching   nerves  and the painful sensation is in the leg.

Child Development – Speech and Language

I’d like to talk about a subject I have extensive experience with: language development in children. My first son didn’t speak until after he was three years old. He started to use words at a young age, but then regressed and was totally silent except for screaming and a few other noises in place of words. This set off several alarms and we brought him to the doctor many times. We thought that he might have autism or something else that affects child development.

We consulted the doctor about language development in children, as well as doing our own research. The doctors tested him and told us we had nothing to worry about. A few relatives thought that they were child development experts and repeatedly tried to give us bogus advice. Fast forward to today and he is five and speaks perfectly normal with only slight speech problems which are dissipating rapidly. I have since come to find out that I spoke at a late age as well. This article is not here to tell you not to worry. You should always consult your pediatrician about language development in children if you have concerns. According to most experts, children should be able to say one word at 12 months, two-word combinations between 18-24 months, and three word sentences before turning three. Our son before three only said a handful of words. After his third birthday, he rapidly began talking. Below are a few things that we thought might be hindering our son’s speech.

Autism

Our son started to speak, then stopped. Regressing is one of the signs of autism in early child development. He was and still is rather shy. We thought he might have social issues as well. Autism is a common suspect in delayed language development in children. There were a few other signs as mentioned above. We had him tested and the pediatrician did not believe this was the issue. Our son is a little quirky to this day, but does not have autism. We continued our research into language development in children. Chronic Ear Infections/Hearing Problems

As a child I had bad ear infections frequently. We thought that hearing issues might be the problem with his speech. Hearing problems are not uncommon with delayed language development in children. The pediatrician also tested this as the possible source, but his hearing was fine. Our research into language development in children was not done.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a neurological impairment that effects language development in children in which abnormal reflexes or tone are absent. Basically this means that the brain has trouble processing sounds and speech properly. We briefly considered Childhood Apraxia of Speech, but our son started speaking soon after we found out about this. Our relative constantly tried to press us to get him checked for this, even after he was talking. Speech Delay

Some children just develop speech later than others, and this was the case with our son. This was also the case with me when I was a toddler. Sometimes children are more focused on other developments and speech takes a back seat. The best time to seek help is when they are about 2 1/2. Do not hesitate to seek professional help at any time if you are concerned. Don’t let people who don’t interact with your child on a daily basis stress you out about it. Language development in children is a common concern of parents. If your child does develop speech late, it doesn’t mean anything except that they developed speech late. Our son has completely caught up and speaks in complex sentences and conveys elaborate ideas. There is a small amount of pronunciation issues, but like I stated above they are getting better quickly. Even though our son did not talk before three, he will sometimes bring up things that he remembers from that stage in his life to this day. Some experts also say that if you take care of all your child’s needs they sometimes don’t feel the need to express themselves through speech. I hope that this article has put your mind at ease if you are looking into language development in children for your little one.

10 Steps to a Magazine Query

Introduction

There are two ways to submit to magazine editors.

One is to send the finished article without it being requested. This is referred to as an unsolicited manuscript. Most editors dislike reading lengthy manuscripts, and many magazines specify that they do not accept unsolicited manuscripts which, when received, are consigned to what’s called the ‘slush pile’ and seldom get read.

Another, more productive way, to submit to magazines is to send a query letter, in which you pitch your idea to the editor before actually writing the article.

A query letter is a sales pitch: your goal is to convince the editor that your article idea is of interest to her readers and that you are the best person to write it.

Query letters save everybody time. In the time that would have taken you to write a full article, you can write a few query letters which may result in more than one assignment. Query letters save editors’ time because they don’t have to read lengthy manuscripts which may not be suitable for their magazines.

Query letters better your chances of working with the magazine you want to write for. Editors are usually reluctant to ask for a rewrite or suggest substantial changes to a finished piece. Query letters, on the other hand, make it easy for editors to offer suggestions to a proposed idea.

Even if your idea is not quite suitable for the magazine, the editor may like the way you’ve presented your idea and yourself and may still be interested in working with you on a different assignment.

I hope by now you are convinced that query letters are essential to breaking into the writing industry, especially if you are just starting out. So it’s well worth the time and effort to compose an irresistible letter that makes the editor want to see more of your writing.

Your query letter is not the only one the editor will see, so you must do your best to make yours stand out from the crowd and get noticed. A single query letter can make or break your success as a writer. Editors remember names. Make sure they remember yours in a positive way.

If your query letter is professionally written and attention-grabbing, even if your idea may not be quite right, the editor will mentally clock your name. If your query is accepted, and you complete your assignment with a well-written, well-researched and error-free article, she’ll remember you even more. And your next query will be viewed in a more favourable light. This means that a good query is often the beginning of a long-standing relationship between you and the editor.

If you send an unprofessional, poorly-written query, suggesting ideas which do not fit the magazine, the editor will remember you, too. But now she remembers you in a negative way. The next time you send her a query, she may just quickly glance at it and put it in the bin. You may be closing the door to that magazine forever by sending a single bad query. Do you really want to take that risk?

Nothing is guaranteed in life. Even a perfect query letter does not guarantee an assignment. But if you following the 10 steps outlined in this book, you will stand a much better chance of producing a professional query letter that gets read and gets assignments.

Note: To avoid cumbersome writing such as he/she and his/her, I have taken the liberty to refer to an editor as a ‘she’.

Step 1: Get the name right

When you receive a letter addressing you as ‘Dear Customer’ or ‘Dear Home Owner’, do you feel the letter is talking to you directly?

Exactly.

It reads like junk mail that has been sent to millions of other people, doesn’t it? If you send an editor a letter addressing her as ‘Dear Editor’ or ‘Dear Sir / Madam’, she will get the impression that not much time and effort has gone into the query, and she’d be right.

If there’s one thing all freelance writers should know, it is that your article must be targeted specifically for a particular magazine. In order for your article to fit in with the style and tone of the magazine, the editor will expect you to have read a few issues of the publication.

A query letter beginning with ‘Dear Sir’ tells the editor that you have not taken the time to research the publication. If you haven’t read the magazine, you won’t know anything about the audience. And if you don’t know who the audience is, how can the editor trust you to deliver an article that is suited to the magazine? So, if you only do one thing to make your query stand a better chance of success, get the editor’s name.

Larger publications often have different editors for different sections, and it’s important to send your query to the right person. When a features editor receives a short story, she may not have the time or inclination to forward it to the short story editor, and your query will be unread. So take some time to find out if you need to send your query to somebody other than the main editor. You can usually find all the information you need in the masthead.

If you don’t want to spend money buying every magazine you want to write for, go to a large newsagent or the library and look up the names there at leisure. Another way is to ring up the editorial office and ask the secretary.

Bear in mind that magazine personnel changes regularly, so check that the name is still valid every time you send a query letter.

Make sure you spell the editor’s name correctly. Some editors are mad about having their names spelt wrong. Besides, if you can’t get the details of her name right, why should she trust you to get the details of the article right?

It is acceptable to address the editor simply as ‘Dear John Doe’ or ‘Dear Jane Doe’ rather than ‘Dear Mr Doe’ or ‘Dear Ms Doe’. Nowadays it’s not always possible to tell someone’s gender by his or her name. In the case of women editor, it is particularly difficult to ascertain if she is a Miss, Ms or Mrs.

Step 2: Know your audience

Imagine this scenario:

You are a 35-year-old career woman. You subscribe to a magazine called ‘Women Today’. You like the magazine because you feel that it caters for women like you. It addresses the needs of those who have to juggle between their roles as career women, wives and mothers. It offers fashion tips for your age group and good advice for busy parents. It also has an inspirational short story in each issue.

Now image this:

At the end of a busy day, after the children have gone to bed and all the dishes have been done, you open your ‘Women Today’ and look forward to a good read, only to find that the magazine is now full of beauty tips for teenage girls; news about pop bands; advice on what to do on a first date; and the short story is gone.

You would be forgiven for thinking that you’ve brought the wrong magazine, and you’d probably stop buying it from now on and look for another one to fill the void.

Driving readers away is the last thing editors want to do. That’s why most magazines stick to a tried-and-trusted formula that suits the targeted readers.

The moral of the story is that there is no point in submitting the wrong type of article ideas to editors. Your article may be beautifully written, well-researched and error free, but if it’s about teenage pregnancy then it’s not going to get printed in a magazine for the over-50s.

Likewise, article ideas about enjoying one’s life in retirement are unlikely to be accepted by editors of magazines targeted at teenagers. Your ideas must be right for the magazines you’re sending your queries to.

You should read at least two issues of the magazine to get to know the tone, style and the average length of the articles. Again, use a library or a large newsagent if you need to.

Don’t forget to look at the advertisements, which will tell you a lot about the magazine’s intended audience. An article about trendy wine bars is unlikely to be of interest to a magazine advertising stair lifts.

Reading the magazine will also ensure that you’re not trying to pitch an idea that has appeared in a recent issue.

Many magazines now publish their submission guidelines on their websites, so check these out first to get an idea about the kind of articles they want. If you can’t find guidelines on the website, write to the editorial office with an SAE asking for writer’s guidelines. Most magazines will be happy to send you a copy.

The bottom line is, editors only print what their readers want to read. So if you have an idea that appeals to a magazine’s audience, it will also appeal to the editor. And the only way to find out what the readers want is to read the magazine yourself.

Step 3: A grand opening

Make your opening sentence work for you. Make it attention-grabbing and make it a masterpiece. Editors are busy people and you have about 30 seconds to get their attention. If you begin your query with a boring statement, she will simply scan through your letter and move on to the next one. Don’t give her any excuse to stop reading your letter. Present your idea as early in the letter as possible.

Your first sentence can be an intriguing question, an interesting fact, a quote from someone you interviewed, an anecdote, a statistic, a riddle or a joke appropriate to your idea.

Don’t ever begin your letter with:

‘Although I have never been published before …’

‘I’m new to writing but …’

‘My mother thinks I should submit this article idea …’

You get the drift. Comments like these scream amateurism. No editors want to work with amateurs.

Step 4: Get to the point quickly

Don’t over-stay your welcome by waffling on about inappropriate personal details. Editors are not interested in the fact that you struggle to find time to write as a mother-of-two, for example.

Explain to the editor why your article idea is unique and how it is of interest to her and her readers. Include a provisional opening paragraph if possible, but only if you think it will grab the editor’s attention and make her want to know what comes next. Say how you will get the information required to write the article; for example, by interviewing experts on the topic.

If you haven’t worked with the editor before, include brief information about yourself. If you have special qualifications to write about this particular article, make sure you let her know. For example, if you have a science degree and your article idea is about making science interesting to the general public, then say so.

Indicate how long your article will be. Make sure this is in line with the average length of similar articles in the magazine. Make it clear to the editor that the length can be varied to suit her needs.

Make your query a single A4 page. If you can’t condense your idea on one page, you need to work on it more to get it more focused.

Don’t include more than one idea in a query. The only exception is when you’re sending fillers. Even then it should be no more than 2 pages. Number your fillers clearly.

Step 5: Be professional

Professionalism is the key to success. The quality of your writing is of course important, but so is the image you project as a professional writer.

Be businesslike. You may be feeling despondent about having received five rejections in a week, but don’t spill your emotions. At this point, an editor is a potential client, not a personal friend, although she may become so once you have worked with her on a regular basis.

If you can afford it, get a professional-looking letterhead designed and printed at a printer. It need not be too expensive. If you own a laser printer, you can design a simple, elegant letterhead yourself on your computer. Make it minimal. Don’t try to use all the available fonts and colours in your word processor, and resist the temptation to include silly clip-arts in your letterhead. If you want to include graphics, get a logo designed professionally.

Include essential details such as your name, postal and email addresses, telephone and fax number.

Don’t expect the editor to pay for return postage. If you want to get a reply, you must include an SAE.

Editors want articles that are well-researched and error-free. If you query is full of mistakes, editors will doubt your ability to produce high-quality articles.

Don’t rely on spell-checkers solely. Read your query letters out loud; this makes it easier to spot spelling and grammatical errors. Get a friend or relative to proof-read your queries. Don’t send them out unless you know they’re error-free.

Step 6: Be focused

It is probably true that everything has been written about at least once. Your task is to find a new angle. Do you have something new to say about your topic? Or can you say something that’s already been said in a new way?

Don’t write to an editor suggesting you want to write an article about cooking or dyslexia. This is too generic. On the other hand, queries entitled ‘Quick Mouth-watering Recipes for Busy Mums’ or ’10 tell-tale signs of dyslexia in children’ are focused.

Editors like ideas that are focused because they can picture how and where the finished articles will fit into their magazines. Make your query focused and editors will love you.

Many magazines have regular sections. If you can indicate to the editor which section of the magazine your article will fit into then all the better. This tells the editor that you have studied the magazine, which will put your in her favour.

Step 7: Mail or email, but no phone

Before you send out your query, check that your submission method is correct. Some magazines will not look at email queries, others insist on them. Do not query by telephone unless you have worked with an editor on a few occasions and are sure that she doesn’t mind.

Sending your query via the wrong method once again shows the editor that you have not spent time studying their publications and guidelines. This will put you on the blacklist and jeopardise chances of acceptance of your future queries.

If you’re querying by email, it is best to paste your query into the body of the email, rather than sending it as an attached document. This is because attachments are notorious for spreading computer viruses, and editors who have not worked with you before will be unlikely to open an attachment from an unknown source.

Emails are great for keeping in touch with friends and family, and we often adopt an informal tone in emails. When you email an editor, however, write it as you would a formal letter. Resist the temptation to use smilies ( ) or abbreviations commonly used on the internet. Don’t over-use punctuation marks, like this!!!!!!! AND DON’T USE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS IN YOUR EMAIL. IT MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT TO READ.

I would also advice against putting the word ‘Query’ in the subject line of your email. Editors are busy people. On a day when she is inundated with emails and letters, and faced with a deadline two days away, she may well respond to that ‘oh no another query’ by deleting it without reading it.

Step 8: Clips, or no clips

If you’re a published writer, include a couple of your best clips with the query, but only if the clips are appropriate to the idea you’re proposing. There is little point in sending a clip on local history if your query is about fine wines.

If you’ve never been published before, don’t draw the editor’s attention to the fact. If the only places you’ve been published are local church newsletters or obscure websites with dubious reputation, it’s best not to mention them. It’s much better to simply present yourself in a professional manner in your query letter. If you act like a pro, the editor will assume you’re a pro and will treat you as one. Let your irresistible query letter and its professionalism speak for you.

Step 9: Learn from your rejections

It’s waiting time once you’ve sent your query off. Unfortunately editors are busy people and the waiting time can range from a week to three months.

If you haven’t heard from the editor in four weeks, follow it up with a polite letter or email. If you still haven’t heard anything after three months, assume it’s a rejection and move on.

For new writers, rejections can be soul-destroying. Just when you are feeling more confident about your writing, along comes a rejection letter, leaving you in doubt as to whether you are good enough to be a writer.

It’s important to realise that getting rejections is part of a successful writer’s life. It means that you’re making contact with the publishing world. Don’t let rejections stop you from sending out more queries. Be persistent, be professional and you will get published.

While you must try not to let the rejection get you down, you should spend some time analysing why your last query has not produced a positive response before re-submitting it to another magazine. Was it appropriate to the publication? Did you start your query with an attention-grabber? Did you send it to the right person? Did you send it in the post when the magazine insists on email submissions (or vice versa)? Did you include enough information for the editor to make a decision? Did you include an SAE?

Every rejection is one step forward in your writing career. Learn from them and use them to make your next query better.

Step 10: Give it 100%

Some writers, especially new writers, argue that they should be spending their time writing ‘something proper’ rather than writing query letters. The trouble is, if you don’t write query letters, your ‘proper writing’ may never be published and be read.

A query letter is a sales letter. To the editor, it is an indication of the quality and style of your writing. If she is impressed with what she reads in your query, she’ll trust your ability to write the finished article.

Don’t ever dismiss writing queries as a waste of time. To a writer, nothing written is ever wasted. Think of it as the gateway to your success as a freelance writer. Follow the steps outlined in this book and give it 100% every time you write a query letter. Now all you need are good ideas. But that’s another story.

Treatment For Stuttering

If you’re looking for treatment for stuttering then you’re going to want to read this article. This is because I used to stutter for a long time when I was a child and learnt exactly how to overcome my stutter, and I want to show you how I did it right here. If this interests you, then stick around for some great advice.

Before I got treatment for stuttering I had a terrible stammer and went through all the ups and downs, mostly downs, of life as a stutterer. Everyday things such as ordering drinks in a bar and making small talk with strangers were close to impossible for me. This was because I was terrified of stammering and also terrified of what the other people would think of this.

It was also very hard to meet members of the opposite sex too. When meeting girls for the first time you often need to win them over with good conversational skills and show off your personality. This was incredibly hard for me because one thing that made my stutter worse was in nervous and stressful situations such as this.

I reached a point in my life when I though enough was enough, and I was determined to do whatever it took to get rid of my stammer and speak fluently like everybody else around me. I didn’t want to have this massive anxiety whenever I was in large social situations and I wanted to enjoy life as a young adult.

Perhaps you are in the same situation as I was and are now looking for treatment for stuttering problems. This is a step in the right direction, as the majority of people with this speech problem to not even attempt to get it sorted. They believe that it is incurable and they have to accept a lower standard of life because of this.

Fortunately for you, I want to show you the treatment for stuttering I got which really began to improve the way I spoke. I decided that I needed to re-train my entire speaking process and start from scratch. I would often speak way too fast and my words would come out all jumbled and even when I tried to speak slower I would often relapse and go into a stammer again.

The process took me several months of trial and error. Some techniques worked whilst others were pretty useless. However I can now speak with total fluency and my self confidence has shot up.

Vegetables For Juicing

With rare exceptions, any vegetable we can cook will give us grater nutrition if eaten raw. I think we would be chewing all the time to process that much vegetable fiber. Because most vegetables are 80% or more water, juicing will make the nutrients much more usable in your body than eating the whole food. While Fruits act as cleansers of our systems, Vegetables act as builders of cells and tissues. Vegetable juices are so good for soothing the nerves and to gently carry away toxic and accumulated waste matter. Raw Vegetable juices are good for many common health problems. Drink vegetable juice at least half an hour after meals. Follow the general rule to not drink vegetable juices before meals or with fruit juices. The very soluble minerals that are found in vegetables, like calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, copper, and potassium maintain the acid base balance of the body tissues. ASPARAGUS is rich in silicon, lots of potassium, sodium, manganese, iron and some phosphorus. Because it is a strong cleanser especially for the kidneys and bladder, it should be used in moderation. This vegetable is better for you eaten raw or juiced because it has a tendency to irritate the kidneys when cooked. Just one serving of asparagus supplies almost 66% of the daily recommended intake of foliate which is very good for heart health and a birth defect fighter. Asparagus has been used to treat problems with swelling, such as arthritis and rheumatism, and may also be useful for PMS-related water retention. Asparagus has inulin which helps promote friendly bacteria in our large intestine.

BEETS contain potassium, iron, sodium and manganese. They are much better for you if you eat the tops and roots together and raw. The tops of beets are very rich in manganese which helps the iron work in building the liver and the blood. Beet juice is powerful and strong so don’t start out drinking more than a cup full a day until your body gets used to it. BROCCOLI is rich in potassium, phosphorous and sulfur. Raw is best for Broccoli, and stems should be used as well as the tops. They are wonderful juiced or chopped and ground for salads. Broccoli is a very good cleanser and tends to reduce body weight.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS are very high in sulfur and phosphorus, and rich in potassium. Because they contain so much sulfur they should be used sparingly and they are best for the body raw. They contain 3 times more sulfur than cabbage.

CABBAGE, both the red and white, are valuable ingredients in a salad but only in reasonable quantities, because the sulfur and chlorine content is high. Red cabbage has 50% more sulfur than white. White cabbage has about 65% more potassium, nearly ten times more iron and about three times as much silicon as the red cabbage. If not properly chewed, cabbage will cause gas, and if you combine cabbage with vinegar, salt, or sugar it can irritate the digestive tract.

CARROTS are one of our most complete foods. Finely grated pulp of raw carrots is one of the most soothing, efficient ways to heal a diseased colon. Raw carrots contain all the elements and all the vitamins that are required by the human body. This is not true of cooked carrots. Carrot juice is a good cleanser of bile and waste matter coagulated in the liver from years of wrong eating. If the skin becomes discolored, after drinking carrot and other juices, it is a result of coagulated bile in the liver dissolving so fast that sluggish kidneys and bowels were not able to take care of its elimination quickly enough, resulting in the lymph carrying this toxic matter out the pores of the skin. If this happened to me I would be grateful to have the cleanse going on rather than the alternative. Drinking raw carrot juice will bring relief to eyes and reduce fatigue resulting from working or driving in bright lights.

CAULIFLOWER is very good to eat raw. It is high in potassium, phosphorous and sulfur, and protein. Like other members of the cabbage family, it has the tendency to irritate the kidneys if you eat too much. It is nourishing and used sparingly is good for you.

CELERY, the stalks along with the green leaves should be used because in addition to very high sodium content they contain insulin. Leeks clean the system and the blood, aid the stimulation of the pancreas and the secretion of digestive juices. SEA LETTUCE is a marine plant, like kelp, that is high in organic iodine. It is found finely ground and you should use no more than one-fourth teaspoonful daily. Try mixing it with a pint of raw vegetable juice. Making a drink of carrot, celery, parsley and spinach, and one-fourth teaspoon of powdered Sea Lettuce is a good aid for diseases of the thyroid gland.

MUSTARD GREENS are a good cleansing food, particularly if the leaves are young. Eaten raw they are valuable for the nutrients they contain.

NETTLES, though not popular because of the stinging nature, are good for their nutrition. They have high vitamins, potassium, calcium and sodium.

OKRA soothes inflammation of the intestines. Add them to your juice drink to soothe irritations of the colon, bladder and kidneys. Okra is high in calcium and has 20% sodium content.

ONIONS are beneficial to the mucous membrane. They are rich in carbohydrates, potassium, calcium, silicon, phosphorus and iron.

PARSLEY is one of the most potent foods of the common vegetable kingdom. It is rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium and chlorine. Raw pumpkin is delicious, as is juiced pumpkin. It is low in carbohydrates. SQUASH and pumpkin are members of the melon family. They are similar in nutrients and uses in the body.

RADISHES may be discussed as 1. large, or 2. small. The large ones have half the mineral content that the smaller ones do.
