Bladder Stones – The Possible Complications

Patients are generally unaware of why bladder stones occur. An otherwise healthy individual can develop stones in the bladder, kidneys or gallbladder without knowing about the causes. These mainly consist of minerals that have crystallized and formed solid structures. Although foreign particles in the urinary bladder can cause the formation of solid crystals, they mainly occur due to crystallization of certain constituents in the body. This is more common in men and begins with common symptoms like abdominal pain. The individual also finds it difficult to urinate and at times, blood may be seen in expelling urine out of the body.

There are two categories of complications that can occur due to bladder stones. If they are ignored, they can result in dysfunction of the bladder. This can be chronic in nature resulting in frequent and recurrent urinary problems. Passing urine becomes difficult as the passage is blocked. Since the urethra is involved, urinary tract is affected. This may result in infections. Infections can lead to severe problems. As a consequence of stone crystals in the body for long, they may trigger cancerous nature in cells. Bladder cancer development is possible in future. Medical services are available for detection and testing of such a condition, and this should be done after consultation with your health care expert.

Besides this, hydronephrosis is another type of complication which is possible in the absence of appropriate treatement. Due to the obstruction in the ureter, the flow of urine from the kidney becomes restricted. As a result of this, pooling begins to occur in the kidneys where in the urine begins to collect in the kidneys instead of the bladder. This is a very critical condition which may even cause alterations in the hormonal balance of the body. Some patients may even develop Reflux nephropathy due to the back flow of excretory liquid. This is again a very critical disorder where the organ may be completely and permanently damaged. However, other causes can also be responsible for these complications.

Bladder stones hence affect the bladder in such a way that voluntary removal of waste liquid is not possible by the individual. This may lead to retention of excretory material in the anatomy. Severe health problems may be stimulated. Since this is a very vital function of the body, it is important to be treated correctly at the correct time. One must not compromise on the medical services and treatment.

Exercise – An Absolute Requirement for Life

Exercise is not merely important. It is absolutely essential. Most people, however, do not realize this, because the time factor of the cause-effect relationship between lack of exercise and the resulting decline in functional ability is so great. To further elaborate on this point, Arthur Jones once used the following example during a Nautilus seminar:

“If I were to grab you by the throat, and choke off your air supply, it would immediately become apparent to you that oxygen is absolutely essential for life. If I were to lock you in a room with no water, after several hours, the degree of thirst you would experience would indicate to you that water is a requirement for life. If I were to lock you in that room with water, but no food, it would take a little longer, a matter of a couple of days, before you would be ravenously hungry, and there would be no question in your mind that food was absolutely essential for life. However, it often takes years before ones body begins to show the harm done by a lack of proper exercise.”

If nothing is done to prevent it, we gradually lose muscle tissue as we age, becoming weaker, and less flexible as a result. There are several problems associated with this, the most obvious being a decrease in metabolism resulting in increased body fat, which is a primary risk factor for heart disease and several other serious conditions such as diabetes. Not so obvious though, are the effects of a lack of exercise on ones bones.

We often hear about elderly people falling and breaking their hips, an injury which often turns out to be fatal. It is often assumed that these people break their hips as a result of having fallen. In a large number of cases, the opposite is true: they suffer a fall because their hip breaks. Each year, an average of 80,000 men suffer a hip fracture and one-third of these men die within a year. The cause: osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis, or porous bone, is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. In the U.S. today, over 10 million individuals already have osteoporosis and 18 million more have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for this disease. What can be done about it? Exercise. What kind of exercise? Low-force, high-intensity strength training is the ONLY safe and productive means of effectively addressing this disease. Some studies have shown increases in bone density as high as 1% per week with high intensity strength training. [The SuperSlow exercise protocol was developed by Ken Hutchins as a result of his need to provide a safe method of high intensity training for the elderly women who’s training he supervised during the Nautilus funded Osteoporosis Study at the University of Florida (1982-1986).]

Keep in mind that the word “exercise” refers exclusively to high intensity strength training. Nothing else qualifies, and many of the activities that have been recommended as exercise by the so-called “experts” in this field will do absolutely nothing to help anyone, and will in most cases do quite a bit to hurt people. Even Michael Pollock, PhD, a former member of Kenneth Cooper’s Aerobics Clinic, and past president of the American College of Sports Medicine agreed with Ellington Darden, PhD that “…all the aerobics activity and interest promoted within the fitness industry since the late 1960’s has not fostered any long-term vascular health. Instead, it has caused an epidemic of joint and spine injury.”

While proper exercise can be of tremendous potential benefit to anyone who performs it, one would be far worse off performing activities such as aerobics, plyometrics, and various ballistic training protocols, than if they had never exercised at all. Not only are these activities not an effective means of stimulating any meaningful improvements in any factor of functional ability, they are downright dangerous. Often, the injuries and degenerative joint conditions which result from such activities will force a person to become much less active earlier in life, and/or prevent them from being able to perform proper exercise, accelerating their loss of muscular strength and functional ability. If as a result of such activities one’s mobility begins to decrease earlier in life, then that activity has effectively shortened that person’s life. Loss of mobility is the first step towards loss of all other factors of functional ability, and eventually death.

There are many people out there who do not exercise either due to motivational problems or ignorance of what is actually required in terms of time invested to achieve meaningful results. They rationalize for this by making excuses about not having enough time or not being able to afford a gym membership or exercise equipment.

This simply is not true.

The amount of training time necessary to dramatically improve ones physical condition is far less than what most people have been led to believe, at the most one hour a week, and in many cases considerably less than that, provided that they are willing to put forth the necessary effort. There are few people, if any, who cannot schedule 30 to 60 minutes of their time each week for something so important.

Can’t afford it? On the contrary, you can’t afford not to exercise.

The cost of not exercising can be far greater than a lifetime of the most expensive personal training. Heart surgeries can cost well over $200,000, and one must often spend as much as $5000 per year on medication afterwards for the rest of their life. If, due to lack of exercise, your mobility prematurely decreases to the point where you can’t care for yourself, you may end up spending over $3000 per month for the last 5 to 10 years of your life wasting away in a nursing home.

So, would you rather spend $500 per year on a gym membership or a couple thousand a year on personal training and make the effort to stay fit? Or end up spending upwards of $30,000 per year to stay in a nursing home and have somebody else dress, feed, and bathe you, because you no longer possess the necessary level of functional ability to do so yourself?

The most important thing a person has, second to their ability to reason, is their ability to move. If you can’t move, you can’t do anything but lie there and wait to die. If you value your life, then proper exercise should be one of your highest priorities.

Pulsar Launches RS200 and Pulsar AS!

If you are a bike lover, there is no doubt that you have been hearing about Bajaj’s Pulsar’s new roll outs this year. Sportsbike enthusiasts around the country have been waiting with bated breath for the release of the Pulsar RS200 ever since first images of the sportster released. That’s not the only bike that has been released from the Bajaj garage, the Pulsar AS 200 was much anticipated for too. Both bikes were designed to bring out the adventure biker in you and see what the hype is about!

Styling and design

First off, let’s be very honest here – both bikes have a stunning design to boast about. For sure, there have not been too many motorbikes India that can match up to the RS200 design though, it is breathtaking. Almost giving you the flair of a street racing bike that is brings about a sense of aerodynamism. The front twin beams are stand out and have to be the stand out feature in design along with the raised back seat to give a pure sports design to the rear tyre.

The AS 200 on the other hand has retained a big part of the conventional Pulsar design with its dome front body and recognizable Pulsar fuel tank. It has not tried to mend with a tried and tested formula too much, but the design retained is still very attractive.

Engine Specifications

If a new bike launch is around, this has to be the most interesting part. The RS200 and AS200 house a very similar engine in most departments. While both displace 200CC, the RS 200 has 24.5 BHP @9750 RPM as compared to the 23.5 BHP @ 9000 churned out by the AS200. Both are 4 stroke and are liquid cooled too. When compared in the 0-60 acceleration column, the RS200 makes the cut at 3 seconds while AS200 is at 3.6 seconds. The power that is driven from the RS200 is all the more attractive when you consider that it weighs in at 165Kgs as compared to 145Kgs on the latter.

The chassis of both these bikes are almost identical and the only standing difference is the front brakes that are placed. The RS200 comes with a single channel ABS & a 300 mm diameter disc, the AS200 front brake works on a 280 mm disc. When it comes to dimensions, the RS200 is a lot more compact with 1999 mm in length and gives lesser ground clearance too. That goes without saying when using a very sporty look for the bike.

Pricing & mileage

There is a significant difference in the pricing approach of both two wheelers India. The RS200 is priced at 1,32,000/- while the AS200 is at Rs 91,550/- (both prices are ex-showroom Delhi). The RS200 does have a heavier price tag, but delivers for the cost for sure. It is a completely different package that the AS200 and is for a rider with a lot of flair. The AS200 on the other hand is a more affordable and daily use bike that might be a hit amongst users graduating from the Pulsar 150s. The RS200 also gives a mileage of 45 as compared to 40 from the AS200.

In the end, it depends on the kind of rider you are and what you are looking for from your bike. If catching everyone’s eye is on the agenda with a little more of a budget – The RS200 is definitely the pick just because of the amazing looks that it has brought to the Indian roads, there is no other motor bike in the Indian market that can boast of looks like this today!

Stress Causes Of Shingles

Shingles (herpes zoster) can only occur in people that have previously had Chickenpox. Chickenpox is never completed eradicated from the body and lies dormant. It can be reactivated at any time by a number of causes, one of which could be excessive stress. The result is normally a localised rash which could be painful or itchy. Other things that may cause shingles are being run down, old age or weakened immune systems.

Stress can cause shingles because chronic stress will affect the immune system. Normally, during a stressful event the body will change the way the immune system will work. This is done by passing adrenaline and cortisol through the bloodstream. In terms of the immune system this will increase the consistency of the blood to make it thicker or sticky. This is in case of injuries that require clotting to seal the injury. This will increase the amount of plasma in the blood. Should the body become injured it will have to fight off potential bacteria and disease. The immune system responds by producing more white blood cells which fight against foreign bodies that may harm the body.

This is fine for sudden stress but if the stress is prolonged and becomes chronic then the immune system is constantly on high alert. This will mean the blood will be thicker than normal which can have further health complications. There will be too many white blood cells in the bloodstream than is needed. An over stimulated immune system has two consequences for the body. It works too well and starts to attack parts of the body or bacteria that live in the body that work in synergy with the body to attack disease. Or, it becomes so conditioned to working at a heightened level that it does not respond to mild diseases or ailments that enter the body. This is why people that are under stress often complain about catching colds easily. This generally leads to a feeling of being run-down and tired.

In the case of shingles, it is believed that the immune system is weakened and the body is run-down. This contributes to the reactivating of the chicken pox virus, as the body cannot suppress the virus. This leads to rashes occurring on the body that can be painful or itchy. The rashes can last for days weeks or months. In some cases they can last for years. For temporary relief you can apply a soothing agent like aloe vera, for example. If the rash persists it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Why Does My Cat Bite Me First Then Lick Me?

If you’re a cat owner you’ll sometimes be puzzled by your cats behavior, especially when they give you a nip or bite and then lick you straight afterwards. This kind of behavior is very normal among cats as it’s regarded as a sign of affection and not aggression. What your feline friend is trying to tell you is, they Love You, it’s their way of giving you a kiss!

Sometimes their cat kisses can seem more like a bite or a sharp pinch which can hurt. Remember don’t get angry at your cat as you can confuse the poor puss. If your feline friend gives a firm love bite than just be firm and say No! In time your cat will understand it’s still OK to show affection but not to cause you pain.

The reason they do this is not to hurt you, they are simply kissing you like they would normally kiss another cat. Because cats have thick fur and their nerve endings in their skin aren’t close to the skins surface like ours, they need to nip harder in order to express their affection.

For a cat, this type of affection is quite acceptable, but as a pet owner it’s not the most pleasant experience being bitten. To stop this type of behavior you can train your cat not to bite, although this can take some time, patience and persistence before you can control this habit or stop it completely.

Although most cats enjoy affection try not to caress them too much as this can over excite them. An over excited kitty will exhibit many tell tale signs like purring, rubbing against you, chirping and a stiff tail that can quiver. Cats that are over excited usually can’t control their emotions, so be prepared in case your cat wants to give you a kiss.

Make sure when you approach your cat too look at their tail first, as their tail is like their mood detector. Remember if their tail is quivering with excitement avoid contact as you might end up with a love bite.

Approach your cat when it’s in a good mood, their tail will look calm and only the tip will gently move. On the other hand if they’re unhappy their tail will flick from side to side, it’s always best to avoid contact with them until they return in a better mood.

Living in harmony with your cat is possible, just try to be aware of their mood swings and if they do bite and lick you (kiss you) remember it’s there way of saying I love you.

Lipoflavonoid: Tinnitus Remedy or Not?

Lipoflavonoid and Tinnitus

Back in 1961, a company came up with the perfect solution to combat the signs of tinnitus: the name was Lipoflavonoid tinnitus. For people who have been experiencing tinnitus for a long time, this could be the answer to their prayers. If people think this is the wonder drug, it is not. This is merely a dietary supplement that has been found to help people get rid of the constant ringing of the ears. Many people wonder if the product does work against tinnitus and is it capable of helping people who are suffering from the said condition. There are a lot of testimonials that could be found online and many tinnitus sufferers may have stumbled upon it by accident or through the recommendation of other people who have tried Lipoflavonoid before.

Tinnitus due to Meniere’s Disease

Lipoflavonoid is basically produced for people suffering tinnitus due to Meniere’s disease. The disease is one that involves the inner ear, and is defined as a disorder that causes vertigo, tinnitus, and a feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear. There are also bouts of on and off hearing loss. A typical attack of the said condition could be forewarned by a feeling of fullness in one ear. There could also be tinnitus or hearing loss. A person may then have a severe episode of vertigo (where everything around seems to spin), imbalance, nausea and vomiting. Studies say that such attacks last around 2 to 4 hours. When people suffer from severe attacks, they are usually exhausted right after and should rest or sleep for hours.

Since Lipoflavonoid is a dietary supplement, how is it supposed to help people suffering from ringing of the ears? The formula of Lipoflavonoid consists of a mixture of certain vitamins such as vitamin B12, eriodictyol glycoside, vitamin C, choline, niacin, and many more. These vitamins are said to help people get rid of the ringing in their ears due to Meniere’s disease. People who have used Lipoflavonoid say that they have found something that could help relieve symptoms of tinnitus. It has also been found out that for people who have a deficiency in vitamin B12 and at the same time have Meniere’s, this product could help them to get rid of the unwanted sound in the ears. The vitamins that the product has all help to improve the circulation in the inner ear. When there is improved circulation, the cells could perform better as they get the needed oxygen and nutrients.

However, as much as Lipoflavonoid helps those who have tinnitus due to Meniere’s disease, there has been little proof that it could help people who have tinnitus due to other causes (noise-induced damage, excessive use of medications). Due to this, people who have Meniere’s may find the product helpful but for those who do not suffer from the condition but also have tinnitus may not find the product as helpful. This is one waterloo that the product has, based on different studies.

Lipoflavonoid and Free Radicals

There have been studies that showed the products’ ability to fight free radicals. Free radicals are organic molecules that roam around the body and speed up the process of aging and tissue damage. These free radicals are also said to contribute to the onset of many diseases. The use of Lipoflavonoid could help to deter these free radicals from causing such effects on the body, making the cells healthier and safe from external factors. The elements in the product, which may have antioxidant properties, may help the body to fight off the free radicals, and thus keep the body healthier.

As a result, Lipoflavonoid may not necessarily be applicable for all people who have tinnitus. People who have Meniere’s disease and have tinnitus could use the product and may have the desired effects of reduced tinnitus. Tinnitus could be very uncomfortable and for those who have Meniere’s, one less symptom could already do wonders for them. The product is not necessarily the cure, but it could help people who have the said condition to be relieved of the constant ringing of the ears. Free radicals could also be eliminated and vitamin deficiencies could also be addressed. Lipoflavonoid tinnitus could help people with Meniere’s disease to get rid of the ringing of their ears.

Hearing Loss Treatment – Dealing With the Condition

The kind of hearing loss treatment that you get will be determined by the diagnosis your doctor gives you. The diagnosis will determine the real cause of the problem and this makes it easy for the doctor to recommend a suitable treatment method. To deal with the condition, the doctors usually deal with the underlying cause. This can be a disease like hypothyroidism. Hearing aids also used as a way of amplifying sounds. The aids are not suitable for everyone therefore it is important to have tests carried out before this option is chosen. If the condition is cause by a severe infection, you may be required to get surgery to deal with the problem.

The aids do not work as well as normal ears but there have been major improvements in the type of technology that is applied to make them over the years. They work if you are not suffering from a residual form of this condition. To select as suitable aid, you will have to undergo various tests and try out a variety of them before you settle on specific one. They usually vary in terms of cost and style. There are some that are almost invisible while for others, you may need to get the large ones.

If you are suffering from a profound case of this condition, you may have to get cochlear implants. They are suitable for those who have profound deafness. Cochlear implants are placed under the skin in the inner ears and they make it possible for people to hear a variety of sounds including car horns, doorbells and telephones.

Ear surgery is also recommended as a hearing loss treatment for some people. This is a safe and effective option if it is carried out by a qualified person. There are various forms of surgery that you can get and your doctor will determine the most suitable option based on your particular case.

Once you have received treatment for your condition, you need to make sure you protect your ears. This will prevent a recurrence of the problem. When you are using devices that produce a lot of noise like power saws and lawn mowers, you need to make sure you wear some ear protectors. Stuffing cotton wool into your ears is not effective. When using portable music devices, you should make sure the sound is not too loud.

Noises in the Ears

Noises in the ear also known as Tinnitis or continues to baffle modern science for a cure. The symptoms of severe tinnitis include sounds in the ear like bells, whistles, sirens, cicadas, chirping, or even muted thunder. Tinnitis often becomes worse at night when background noise is low. At this time tinnitis can become so severe and aggravating that it will keep a person awake. Anyone that suffers with noises in the ear understands just how devastating tinnitis can become. Researchers and doctors have called tinnitis the third worst thing a person can endure, the first being severe intractable pain, and the second persistent and uncontrollable dizziness. Yet there is no real sound created by tinnitis, and it’s been diagnosed as a neurological condition. There is no known cure for the torment of tinnitis although a number of medications and treatments are prescribed for the symptoms.

If you suffer with noises in the ears that are having a negative impact on your life its best to see your physician. There are many reasons you could be affected with tinnitis and some of them are quite serious. It’s good to let your doctor know if your having problems with sounds in the ear.

There are a few things you can do to help decrease the onset or the symptoms of tinnitis and some of them are quite effective in dealing with the problem.

· If possible avoid exposure to loud, intense, or prolonged noise. Many physicians believe excessive and intense noise can cause nerve damage in a sensitive area of the middle ear called the cochlea and is responsible for the symptoms of tinnitis. If you are unable to avoid intense noise pollution it’s a good idea to wear earplugs and noise suppression protection like ear guards when you’re exposed to high levels of acoustic energy. Not only will it help you if you already suffer with noises in the ears, it will decrease the probability that you will develop tinnitis.

· Get your blood pressure checked. Tinnitis can be caused by hypertension. If your suffering with tinnitis have your blood pressure checked, it could save your life. Ringing in the ears can be caused by hypertensions and the cause could be more serious than the tinnitis itself. Remember blood pressure is often elevated by excessive salt intake and salt impairs circulation and causes the body to retain water. One of the first things a doctor will recommend if you have hypertension is to reduce your salt intake.

· Coffee, tea, caffeine, cola, and especially nicotine will not only increase your blood pressure but are often aggravate or increase the volume and intensity and onset of tinnitis These products have been linked to noises in the ears and will often produce noises in the ears for some people sensitive to them.

· Daily exercise is important and will help reduce your stress level. Excessive or prolonged periods of stress can augment or create tinnitis. Remember research has shown that subjective tinnitis often originates in areas of the baring that deal with emotions like anger. A brisk walk may help reduce the stress associated with the ear sounds.

· It will help if you can learn to stop worrying about noise in the ears. Since there is no real cure you may have to accept it for what it is and ignore it as much as possible. But remember just because there is no cure it doesn’t mean there is no hope for the torment of tinnitis.

How to Improve Your Imagination

Your imagination is a fundamental part of your mental armory, and should be developed to your advantage. Well the good news is, that you can quite easily develop your imagination by following the suggested methods below. The writer Somerset Maugham, once said ” Imagination grows by exercise, and contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than the young”

There have been many creative thinkers in the past responsible for inventions such as the electric light bulb, radio, television, and more recently the Internet, mobile phone and home computer. Now of course I am not saying that simply having a developed imagination will allow you to come up with a revolutionary new product for the masses, but it could certainly have a massive impact on your own life and those of your family, so here are a few suggestions for improving your imagination: –

• Your Personality – Use your imagination to overcome undesirable habits. If you are reserved or bad-tempered, if you have a   speech   impediment  or are easily embarrassed, see yourself as being free from these tendencies. Stop dwelling on past failures. Paint success pictures in your mind daily. Develop a good self-image. Modify your self-image and you modify your behavior.

• Your Relationships – In what ways can you be a better partner, or parent. How can you improve on your business networking? Think and act now. Your improved imagination can change your world, and those closest to you.

• Your Work – How can you improve your own working conditions, be more useful to your employer. If you are an employer, how can you improve working conditions for your staff? Could you provide a workplace were ALL employees can advance themselves.

• Your Achievements – Use your imagination vividly here, visualize yourself being what you aspire to be, doing what you want to do. Create success images day-by-day, only positive images from now on; let imagination be your best friend.

Set about formulating NOW a vivid and detailed picture of exactly the person you wish to become. Focus on this image every day as often as you can. Let this image be the first thing you think of when waking, and the last thing you think of before going to sleep. You must do this daily, if you discipline yourself to follow this advice you WILL eventually become that person which your mind has created, and the words of John Masefield, who wrote “Man’s body is faulty, his mind untrustworthy, but his imagination has made him remarkable” will be proven throughout your life.

Elements of Design

We see design everyday, whether it’s good or bad design. Whatever style a space is evoking, traditional or contemporary, there are certain elements that always stay the same, these are the Elements of Design. These things may sound a bit trivial but they surround us everyday & may give clues why a space speaks to you or not. Here they are:

1. Lines

Is it horizontal or vertical? Diagonal or Straight? Curved maybe? Straight lines have always been attributed to more modern or contemporary design, whereas curved lines are associated with an older era. Think Queen Anne canopy chairs & arched doorways. Too many straight lines are considered too harsh or too cold whereas too many curved lines are too flamboyant & over the top. Maybe that’s why a mix always turn out easy on the eyes.

2. Shape

Shapes are basically closed lines. A square, a rectangle, a circle. If surrounded by box shapes like sectional sofas & ottomans, then you can break the monotony by using round coffee tables.

3. Forms

Forms are three-dimensional shapes, cubes, cylinders, a ball.

4. Space

Or better called negative space is the area between objects. If there’s too much area between objects, it’s a minimalist design, less space, more country cottage. Yet some space principles are considered universal, like dining chairs should at least be 4 feet apart from each other. Learned that from my professor the first day.

5. Color

Can any other element be more universal? Color affects our mood & the way we feel everyday When we think of color, we think of it’s “hue”, it’s name, it’s value, whether it’s light or dark & it’s intensity, whether it’s bright or dull.   Muted  colors  are  “in” nowadays.  Muted  colors  are  dull colors.

6. Texture

The surface quality that’s seen & feel. Don’t you think it would be so boring if everything was smooth? Or if everything was coarse? A rich-layered look is never achieved without varying textures. The smooth hardwood floors, covered by a soft rug, the suede sofa with cotton pillows & a cashmere throw.

I hope you learned something new {or relearned something old} with this post. Next up, the Principles of Design.

How to Know If You Have Brain Cancer

The most likely reason for asking about how to know if you have brain cancer is that the person or a loved one has experienced some symptoms that are suspected could (but hopefully not) be caused by brain cancer. There are many related questions that follow and this series is a result of research into the various aspects of the issue of brain cancer, including treatments and outcomes.

Research shows that there are areas of agreement as well as areas of disagreement amongst those that provide care and advice. Additionally, there are conflicting reports from brain cancer patients and family members of patients as to the value and effectiveness of both methods of diagnosis as well as treatment choices.

The most common symptoms are:

o headaches,

o weakness,

o nausea,

o clumsiness,

o difficulty walking,

o changes in speech,

o vision or hearing difficulties,

o twitching or seizures, and

o numbness or tingling in the arms or legs.

None of the symptoms are unique to brain cancer so they must be taken as indicators only. Also, symptom onset can be quite gradual and is often overlooked.

It is quite common for different medical organizations or practitioners to provide differing lists of the most common brain cancer symptoms. This appears, in part, to be due to the various parts of the brain that could be cancerous and thereby affecting the different parts of the body that are associated with the affected part of the brain.

The following are regarded as less common but possible symptoms:

o altered mental status,

o changes in concentration,

o impaired judgment, memory, attention, or alertness,

o gradual changes in intellectual or emotional capacity,

o impaired sense of smell,

o paralysis of one side of the face or body,

o drooping eyelid or crossed eyes,

o prolonged drowsiness,

o swelling,

o discontinuation of menstruation,

o excess secretion of milk in women, and

o impotence in men.

All research sources were quick to point out that symptoms are not a sure sign of cancer. When asking how to know if you have brain cancer it is important to know that other conditions could also cause these symptoms.

Addition articles in the series soon to be released include statistics, diagnostic choices, treatment choices, what questions should you ask your doctor, is it possible for a cancer patient to ever be cancer free, and patient testimonials (including miracle results).

Are You Sure You’re In A Relationship

Other than love, there’s probably no word more misunderstood and misused than the word “relationship.” Ask several people what the word means to them and you’re not likely to get the same answer. When I was a kid knowing the definition of the word relationship was simple. Although we didn’t use a big word, as kids we had a formal understanding of what exclusivity meant. There was the old custom of asking a girl to be your girlfriend. “Will you be my girlfriend” was something you’d stammer in a nervous question after school. Or you’d go the written route and nervously scribble a note and rewrite it three or four times.

A few years later in high school things got a little more complicated. Where I grew up there were two definitions of a relationship in high school. One was, “were just friends.” “Just friends” was a deliberate signal you sent to other potential suitors. It meant, I’m interested in this person but we’re not exclusive. It was a simple definition that everyone in school understood. If another guy was interested in a girl I liked and I had publicly stated “we’re friends” then he was free to pursue her and I knew that. The other publicly understood definition in high school was the attachment of the titles boyfriend and girlfriend; or informing everyone that you were “going steady.” In that case, everyone knew you were a couple, no ifs ands or buts about it.

But when we get to adulthood things get much more complicated. For adults there’s no simple definition for what a relationship is. In fact, it’s down right confusing and frustrating. Short of marriage there’s no real definition for a relationship. Here are a couple of misunderstanding that occur in the adult world of dating and relationships.

But I Thought Since We’ve Been Dating So Much…

“This is my girlfriend, Cindy.” Mike said to a friend at a party. Cindy grabbed Mike by the arm and rushed him into the hallway of the suburban home for a quick defining of their situation. “Look, I’m not your girlfriend so please don’t tell your friends that!” Mike was taken aback and insulted. After all he’d been going out with Cindy frequently during the past two months. They didn’t talk the rest of the night. Not even on the drive home. To some the word relationship means anyone they’re dating repeatedly. Often one person is shocked to find out someone they’ve been out with several times considers them in a relationship. One person assumes that the frequent dating means they are a couple but the other is not on the same page.

But We Made Love…

Others think a relationship becomes formal with sex, especially if it they are highly discriminating about sexual partners. But everyone doesn’t see it that way. For example, Anna made that mistake. Anna and Charles had connected well on three dates. So they hadn’t been seeing each other long when they lost all will power one Saturday afternoon on her couch. What was supposed to be a casual date turned into a couple of hours on the couch and the living room floor. A few nights later they had sex again. Then the same menu that weekend. Anna assumed she and Charles had a hot new love budding. But Charles didn’t see it that way. Over the next week he became difficult to contact. He showed up again around 10:30PM one night and left disappointed when Anna didn’t want to have sex. After that he didn’t call anymore and Anna was screened out on his call notes.

More than anything, assumptions get people into trouble in this area. We assume that because certain things happened or certain things have been said that a relationship is in progress. Wrong! The reality is relationships need to be given a definition. I know it sounds like I’m reducing romance to a business transaction but this is the only way to avoid confusion and heartbreak. We have to be real about relationships. The fact is that despite how much people love romance and the tingling feeling it brings, some aspects of it must be clearly defined to avoid disaster. Defining a relationship lays out expectations. It’s a sort of contract between two people as to how they will behave. Maybe in the 21st century we need a contract for relationships. A legal document with everything spelled out, duration, no sex or frequency of sex, cohabitation rules, time together, time alone, AIDS/HIV and sexually transmitted disease testing, a break-up clause, rewards for good behavior and longevity, penalties for not honoring the agreement and a clause prohibiting psycho stuff after the break-up.

But everyday people don’t define where they are on the romantic map and leave it to chance. It seems we often expect the other person to be magically aware of when things are getting serious. But they may not. As Darryl and Anna have shown us, assumptions about exclusivity in dating are a prescription for trouble. Instead of leaving it to chance, have an honest talk about where things are headed when you feel the time is necessary between you and someone you’re seeing. It may shock them that you were even thinking things were getting serious. Or, they may be relieved that you were thinking the same thing they wanted to say. But either way you need to get a clear definition of this very important area of your life. Don’t make assumptions.

End the Procrastination – Find an Effective Fluency Technique and Use It

End the Procrastination Today

Let today be the end of procrastination of doing something about your stutter / stammer. How many times have you said to yourself, “I really have to do something about my stuttering, it’s driving me crazy and controlling my life.”? How many times have you set a plan in place to do something about it, only to see a good idea fall by the wayside in a short time? There are many reasons why individual goals to act on your stuttering are eroded over time. These can be:

  • Poor commitment
  • Lack of support
  • Lack of understanding from others
  • Poor quality therapy technique
  • Poor motivation levels
  • Lack of self-belief
  • Fear of failure

Perhaps you could sit and think about your previous goals to improve or change the way you are and evaluate why they failed to meet expectations. If the reason/s for not consistently using your fluency technique are any of the above, then in terms of overcoming your stutter, let’s work through them.

Originally you came up with a good idea to do something about your fluency, so your original commitment or willingness to act was there and probably strong. Think about what you committed to. Was it realistic and was it something that you could reasonably achieve within a time frame? Were you trying to achieve too much too soon? Did you expect to see major changes without the framework of good self-belief, great technique and friendly support? You see, all the reasons we fail to achieve our fluency goals are entangled and become such an anchor to our road to recovery that, in most cases, we drop the ball and fail.

Write your ideas for self-improvement down and make sure they are realistic, things that you can fairly easily achieve on a daily basis. Write down and highlight small gains and successes. Celebrate and acknowledge each achievement, no matter how small, because over time they will swell to see real change for the best.

When you think of your original plan it is often easy to dismiss the importance of others. It is important to surround yourself with like-minded people, people who are trying to improve their situation in similar ways to yourself. Seek out support groups like the Australian Speak Easy Association, British Stammering Association, Toastmasters and ‘practice buddies’ via Skype around the world. These groups of people will help you achieve your fluency goals both short and long term.

Just get yourself out there. If people don’t know what you are trying to achieve with your fluency, then of course there will be a lack of understanding from others. Tell people what you are trying to achieve. Start with the people you know well, your family and loved ones. Their understanding and support will help you maintain your own focus on your goals.

Of course the best and most committed individual without a proven, speech pathology-backed technique would be hard-pressed to achieve success. Seek out the very best evidence-based technique, something that you know works, and commit to it. Be positive about it and use it. Practise at every opportunity and allow yourself the time to practise. Never allow your new technique to become a negative. You know your new technique works. You have had success with the technique and it has provided you with a tool for the management of your fluency. Even if you go through rough periods, it is not the fault of the technique. In many ways, negative thinking drives our dysfluency and eats away at many positive changes we set in place.

Poor Motivation, Lack of Self-Belief and Fear of Failure

These are all cognitive issues. Once you set in place a wonderful fluency technique, then it is important to consider the cognitive processes. ‘Cognition’ means ‘the act or process of knowing; perception’. Cognitive behaviour involves our thinking. Individual perceptions can vary considerably. How one person perceives an issue can be very different to the next person. The act of stuttering over many years can cause distorted perceptions about yourself and others. If this type of thinking is not addressed then the individual can go through life with a set of negative beliefs about him/herself in relation to the stuttering. Current research shows that the use of cognitive treatment as part of stuttering therapy helps to maximise success.

Let today be the end of procrastination of doing something about your stutter / stammer.

Hay Fever Season

With hay fever season just around the corner, now might be a good time to reflect on some of the important facts concerning the condition, including what it is, its causes and its impact on children and adults.

Rhinitis is the medical term for hay fever. In less technical lingo, rhinitis is simply an allergy to pollen. Hay fever is particularly prevalent among pre-teen children with studies showing figures of 2 in every 5 children as occasionally or persistently affected by the illness. Seasonal hay fever is at its peak during the spring and summer when pollen is at its most abundant.

Other than just the dynamics unique to the different seasons of the year, certain circumstances leave one more predisposed to a hay fever attack than others. The outdoors for instance, is a more fertile ground for an attack, than the indoors for obvious reasons: there is more pollen in the atmosphere outdoors, than there is indoors. In addition, hotter days that are accompanied by unusually strong gusts of wind, lead to increased incidents of hay fever.

Rhinitis is actually the result of the body fighting the inhaled pollen, leading to changes in the body’s respiratory system, that then causes the sneezing, teary eyes and running nose that are the typical characteristics of this allergy.

In children, hay fever is sometimes as much a result of the exposure to pollen as it is genetic. If either parent had or still has problems with hay fever, then the chances of the son or daughter being particularly prone to the allergy, is a notch higher than the average.

When one looks at the high number of children that are affected by rhinitis each year, it is clear that it is quite difficult for a parent to completely shield their child from having to contend with this.

In order not to affect children’s schoolwork, medication that is non drowsy is the best alternative. This of course must be coupled with appropriate behaviour change, and environment awareness e.g. keeping windows shut in the home during windy spring or summer days, and instead relying on the air conditioning to manage room temperature.

But adults are not immune to this condition. Actually, during the spring and summer seasons, the allergy is one of the medical conditions that have the most impact on productivity and the general work environment.

Since rhinitis is often not considered an illness strong enough, to lead to one taking the day off, organizations can easily end up with an office, where employees may be present, but their productivity is so hindered, that their absence might have been a more effective alternative.

Of course if you happen to be the employee suffering from hay fever, your work will not be the only thing troubling your mind. The continuous wheezing, sneezing and nose blowing is not only irritating for you, but downright embarrassing sometimes.

All is not lost though, as there is medication that one should always keep close at hand during these times, especially, if you have record of coming down with the allergy during the spring or summer.

HPV Treatment

Human Papilloma Virus is a dangerous virus that can cause cervical cancer in women and penile or anal cancer in men. But not all these viruses cause cancer because there are more than a hundred types of HPV and about forty affects the genitals of both men and women. This virus does most harm on women. The infections caused by this virus are some of the most common Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). All these infections of HPV don’t lead to serious situations but in fact most of them go unnoticed. But the rest show symptoms and gives an ugly feeling on the person. There is no cure for HPV but there are treatments available. And most of the time the infection heals by itself.

It is necessary to first confirm that the HPV is working inside your body before taking any treatment. The doctor will do careful different examinations and tests to confirm. Then the doctor will decide which HPV treatment to use. Here are some HPV treatments:

o Don’t do anything but just wait and see. Watch and see if the infections are healing o their own.

o Cryotherapy: this is the method of freezing the abnormal cells using liquid nitrogen.

o Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP): this is the method of removing the cells using electric current.

o Conventional surgery can also be done to remove the tissues.

o There are medicines available with the doctor or even at the medical stores which give effective treatment.

o Laser surgery can also be done in some cases. Conization is the process of removing the cells using laser of knife.

These treatments are not for HPV but are just for removing the abnormal tissues fro the body. There are no treatments for HPV. These above treatments shouldn’t be done by pregnant women because it may harm the baby and even cause still-births or miscarriages. In some cases the mother passes HPV to the baby but this is also not usual.

Two vaccines have been developed for women to protect them from cervical cancer and genital warts. These have to be taken three times and best before the girl becomes sexually active. So far no vaccines is available for men.

The best solution to treat HPV is to stay away from the virus. Take precautions so that you might not get the virus and in case you already got the virus then make sure that you do all possible things to keep your body strong enough to fight the virus.

o Avoiding sex while the warts or lesions are showing is a must. Otherwise also you have to use protection while having intercourse.

o Lessening the consumption of alcohol and tobacco will help considerable.

o Always go for check ups. One check up is not enough. Keep close to the doctor.

o Eat a proper diet rich in folic acid and vitamins.
