Emergency Dental Treatment

Emergency dental  treatment  is something that everyone requires at one time or another. Did you know that some health and dental plans do not cover emergency dentist  treatments  or care? Emergency  treatment  is generally only available for the immediate relief of pain. Emergency dental  treatment  is a very important matter and waiting for the next day to see a regular dentist can make it harder to fix your dental problems.

Pain is one of the reasons people go to the dentist. A painful tooth can be triggered by hot or cold food and drinks. Pain involving these parts of the mouth, even when minor, can indicate a severe underlying problem that could worsen with time. It is important to contact a dentist as soon as possible for a professional evaluation to minimize damage to the teeth, gums, and supporting bone.

Attending an emergency dentist at the first sight of pain ensures your teeth can be protected and further damage limited. Some  treatments  can ensure your mouth is thoroughly protected while any procedures are taking place through the use of a dental dam. After any dental procedures are completed you might feel some degree of sensitivity to cold as well as hot foods and drinks where in the past you did not have this sensation.

Dental pain relief can also come in several methods and one of the most common is through using a nitrous oxide gas or intra venous sedation. Teeth can be filled with gold; porcelain; silver amalgam (which consists of mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper); or tooth-colored, plastic and glass materials called composite resin fillings. The location and extent of the decay, cost of filling material, patients’ and insurance coverage will of course have an effect on the overall costs of  treatment .

Oral pain can bring anxiety to almost every sufferer. Dental  treatments  that require incision and drilling bring too much worry as well. Oral examinations, x-rays and checkups are done to ensure a proper  treatment  plan is drawn and executed and the dental diagnosis determines what types of  treatments  and how an individual patient case is to be treated.

In terms of Crowns, these strengthen and protect remaining tooth structure and improve the appearance of your teeth. Root canal  treatment  consists of removing the nerve that lies within the root of the tooth. Crowns and veneers are generally permanent solutions, so it is important that you discuss the  treatment  with an emergency dentist before making a decision.

When discussing childrens teeth it is worth remembering that teeth are some of your children’s most important possessions. How you look after their teeth from the time they are babies will make a difference to how they grow and how healthy they are so start as you mean to continue, and hopefully, they will never require the services of an Emergency Dentist.

How Do You Become a Compounding Pharmacist?

Everyone responds to substances that they inhale, ingest, or receive via injection or through the skin, differently. When it comes to medications, not everyone responds the same and achieve the same results. The purpose of pharmacy compounding is to meet the needs of people who are unable to take medication in the commercial form.

Compounding pharmacists customize a patient’s medication prescription for the specific needs of the patient. As the demand for compounded medications increased, the pharmacy industry realized there was a need for a national set of standards so that compounding pharmacies could test their quality practices. There is now a big demand for compounding pharmacists.

Compound pharmacists are pharmacists who are specially trained. In the U.S., all licensed pharmacists are capable of performing some type of compounding. Compounding is taught in pharmaceutical programs in pharmacy school. Every pharmacist are required to have these basic skills in order to graduate and become licensed. The level of continuing education one obtains and years of experience coincides with how specialized one becomes in the compound pharmacy field. Pharmacists are trained in pharmacy school to compound and the amount of training one receives is dependent upon the particular pharmacy school they attend. As the medication preparations become more complicated, the amount of training that is needed increases. There continuing education programs are available for those who want to keep their training and experience current.

All licensed pharmacies must be able to provide some level of compounding. However, some compounded prescriptions have to be referred to specialty compounding pharmacies. The average chain pharmacy compounds 1-3% of total prescriptions. Compounding is regulated by the individual state pharmacy boards and manufacturing is regulated by the FDA. Besides working in a compounding pharmacy, if you are interested in pharmaceutics, working for a drug company in the drug production department is often recommended in order to get more experience to become a compounding pharmacist.

In 2004, major pharmacy associations joined with the U.S. Pharmacopeia to form the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB). This is a voluntary accreditation organization whose purpose is to assure the quality of compounded medications that patients are prescribed. PCAB Accredited compounding pharmacies are required to have specific training in the methods of compounding.

To become PCAB-accredited, compounding pharmacies are tested against 10 strict standards. These standards include: “regulatory compliance; personnel; facilities and equipment for both sterile and non-sterile compounding; chemicals and the compounding process; beyond-use dating and stability; packaging, labeling, delivery for administration and dispensing; practitioner and patient education; quality assurance and self-assessment.”

With so many pharmacies across the country that have already been accredited and so many pending applications, obtaining a position in one of these accredited pharmacies is becoming much easier. The PCAB is already providing patients with a way to select a compounding pharmacy that meets very strict and high quality standards.

The importance of compounding pharmacies is now being realized as the demand for these pharmacies grows. Because of the increasingly different requirements for individual patients, compounding pharmacies are now an important part of the pharmacy industry.

Drug Abuse Takes Too Much Away From Life

I have seen so many lives wasted from the abuse of  drugs  that it breaks my heart to see so many young people use  drugs . I have not only tried  drugs  I have seen so many people that I have known destroyed their lives because of  drug  addiction. I did not take most dangerous  drugs  that were available when I was young. I took enough one time, after I left home, to leave me almost paralyzed for weeks, so that I learned just how much  drugs  could take away from my life. I thought that doing  drugs  was cool so I was taking pills, and I never really knew what I was taking besides speed. I could have died or overdosed just because I never thought about what was in these pills that I was taking.

I have seen so much death and waste of life by people that I cared about. I still do not know to this day what damage I did taking  drugs . I have watched so many friends and their kids be come completely dependent on the  drug  known as crack. So many young people think that taking  drugs  are cool. I am here to tell young people that the use of any  drug  just takes away not only your independence but as time goes on the need for  drugs  increases. Addiction is the most costly part of taking any  drug  that should not be taken.

I have watched so many young people I know get so addicted to crack that they would do anything just to get another taste. There are way to many down sides to letting any  drug  take over a person’s life. I know you get where you constantly need the same  drug  and more every time that it is used. These  drugs  eat holes in your brain over years of use. Long term addiction destroys your ability to think clearly. These  drugs  not only leave physical scars, they stop the ability to learn long term. I have seen people that have taken  drugs  since they were young teenagers and their mental growth stopped the day the  drug  abuse started.

Drugs  make people do things they would not do if they did not need a fix just to get through the day. Taking  drugs  makes that person a slave to their addiction. I have watched people steal to support their habit. I have watched  drugs  turn young girls into hookers and worse. I have watched girls I knew when they were young have babies that are addicted to crack. These young parents did not even care that they had a child all they wanted was their  drugs . So many young children lose their mothers to  drugs . I have watched three generations of the same family addicted to  drugs .

Drugs  become so important in life that no one else will matter as long as people feel that high.  Drugs  will make some people kill just to get them. Once addicted, their is only one way out to get that is to either end up dead in some crack house or worse. Getting clean is the only answer. To stay clean and get a person’s life back.  Drugs  may make a person’s problems go away for a while but  drugs  also make a person prisoner to that need. Then there are also the legal trouble that comes with needing  drugs . I have also seen so many people spend their whole day just shop lifting to support their habit.

Any addiction will take away a person’s freedom because that need to have a  drug  becomes stronger the longer that  drug  is used. the long term use of  drugs  affects a person`s personality to the point that after some time nobody knows that person. Listen to me and learn no  drug  will take away your troubles – it will only make trouble worse in the long run. I can tell people that no  drug  abuse ever made life easier. I can not begin to tell people how much is lost with using any addictive  drug . There is the loss of family and friends to the need to feed that addiction. Then there is the times in rehab when the pain is so bad that a person thinks they are going to come apart.

Most long term addicts end up dead somewhere – nobody even knows that person died. Think about the pain and loss that will come with the need to have some  drug . Think about the pain and disgrace that happens to families that has a  drug  addict. I was one of the lucky ones most people that take  drugs  are not that lucky. The long term medical affects are costly to people that abuse  drugs . The body`s organs suffer constant damage and aging by the use of  drugs .  Drugs  never really stop the problem that started the addiction.

No  drug  is worth the long term damage that a  drug  addict suffers long term. I believe that a person should find another way to solve the problem nothing is worse to see then a person that is lost for life to their addiction. Do not let any person convince another person that  drugs  are the answer.  Drugs  will only make life pass by without the ability to think clearly.  Drugs  cheat people out of their right to a full life. Take back life before its to late to make a change after the damage that is done person`s mind and body are done. Life is hard enough to face and deal with as it is without clouding a person`s thoughts and mind with  drugs . I have learned that no real life problem is as hard as getting clean. I can tell people about the real side of  drug  life there is no future for any person.

Any body that tells another person that taking  drugs  is partying this is nothing but a future full of hard times and loss of any normal life that a person hopes for. I have told people the basic truth about a life of  drug  use I hope that people will realize that no  drug  is the answer. Only by saying no can a person assure their future. I believe that by saying no to  drugs  will be the smartest decision that a person will ever make in their life.

To many people have been lost to these  drugs  already do not let another person make a person feel like they will not fit in. Believe me when it comes to  drug  abuse and the addiction this life will bring a person does not want to fit in. It is better not to be part of this crowd because there is really no happy ending when a person gives away the right to think with a  drug  free mind so just say no to any  drugs .

I hope that this article will make people aware of the real truth about  drugs  and life. Because  drugs  abuse and life do not match.

As always I write with respect.

Herbal Medicine

Find Herbal Medicine Schools in the United States and Canada. Herbal medicine schools instruct students in the essentials of herbalism and botanical medicine. Students who opt to enroll in herbal medicine schools will learn that this form of medicine is one of the oldest healthcare systems known to mankind.

Typically, students who possess an interest in participating in herbal studies at one of several herbal medicine schools should have attained some education in physiology and/or anatomy prior to enrollment. This is important, as it lends to the student’s ability to better understand the philosophy and theories behind herbal medicine therapies.

While some herbal medicine schools focus primarily on traditional Chinese medicine, other herbal medicine schools may provide a wider array of classes that encompass studies in botany, botanical terminology, phytochemistry (of medicinal plants), cell chemistry, medicinal plant compounds, Ayurvedic medicine, Native American plant medicine, herbal pharmacy, diagnosis, clinic and case history; among other related topics.

Students enrolled in herbal medicine schools will gain an overall understanding of how herbal medicine is facilitated for spices, therapy and/or medicinal purposes. In addition, students will learn from which plants herbs are derived, and how to use those herbs for not only medicinal purposes, but for nutritional additives and aromatherapy. Because herb plants produce and comprise a myriad of chemical substances, students participating in studies at herbal medicine schools will also learn that 25% of prescription drugs in the US contain at least one active plant material ingredient.

Successful candidates, who have completed all course requirements through one of many herbal medicine schools can go onto achieve varying levels of herbal medicine certifications. Many of these certified herbal medicine therapists can enter the healthcare fields of Ayurvedic practitioners, homeopathic practitioners, natural health practitioners, Chinese medicine practitioners and other holistic health practitioners. In addition, astute candidates who have completed advanced training courses at one of many herbal medicine schools may utilize their knowledge and skills to help develop plant medicines for pharmaceutical researchers.

Because herbal medicine schools vary in course length, tuition costs and curriculum, it is always wise for prospective students to carefully review course outlines, prerequisites (if any) and if financial aid options are available. Generally speaking, herbal medicine schools are growing in quantity because the demand for alternative and natural medicine is concurrently on the rise. Students and even current health professionals who are seeking a rewarding alternative in health care will find that gaining a comprehensive education through any one of numerous herbal medicine schools can only benefit one’s personal and professional growth.

Making Scars and Wounds With Stage/Theater Makeup

Special effects take performances and shows to a higher level of intensity and theatricality. Theater makeup produces a visual effect that helps set the tone for scene and better defines the characters. Scars and wounds better portray the events that have occurred and set a more realistic and thrilling tone to the performance.

When it comes to creating realistic-looking cuts, bruises, or burns, it only takes a few supplies:

• Liquid latex – to help set the area for makeup and to help with easy makeup removal

• Bruise and abrasion wheel – a variety of makeup colors that produce a finishing touch to the bruise, burn, or cut you are creating.

The first step in creating a bruise with stage makeup is to dab a bit of red from the bruise wheel with a makeup sponge to create an irritated look. Next, apply the blue and purple and blend it out to create the look you desire. Add yellow and green to give the effect that the bruise happened a couple days ago.

With a few simple items, you can have a burn that looks very realistic and theatrical.

• Burn and bruise color wheel – provides you with the colors needed to create a realistic burn

• Gel – to create a bumpy surface to the skin

• Stage blood – to complete the look of a freshly burned or healing surface

To create a false burn on the skin, apply the gel in a dabbing motion. Next, using the red color in your wheel, dab the red onto the gelatin to create a swelled and irritated look. Use the dark red or light brown to add a better visual effect to the entire surface. Lightly dab black around the edges and softly over the surface. Using stage blood and a small brush, apply a small amount to the newly created wound to give the final touch.

Scars and Cuts

Scars, whether big or small, can create a history for any character. To create a scar that will endure, the following items are recommended:

• Liquid latex – helps protect the skin by facilitating removal

• Scar wax – helps create a look of raised, scarred skin

• Adhesive – to hold the wax in place

• Foundation – helps blend colors of the wax with the natural color of the skin

• Bruise and abrasion wheel – provides the right makeup colors needed to give the full effect

• Powder – takes away the shine of the liquid latex

• Stage blood – whether a cut or open scar, stage blood helps to complete the realistic appearance

1. Scars are created by first applying liquid latex to the work area on the skin.

2. Next, apply an adhesive to help hold the scar in place.

3. Using a spatula, carefully apply a bit of scar wax. If you don’t have access to a spatula, you can roll the wax into a snake-like shape, place it on the skin, and gently blend the edges of the wax onto the surface of the skin, leaving a raised section of wax in the middle.

4. Apply another layer of adhesive to help secure the wax. If desired, apply a light coat of powder to reduce the shine of the latex.

5. Use foundation on the edges and top of the wax to help the color of the wax with the skin color.

6. Color the scar using the abrasion wheel. Dab the colors around the scar to create a look of swelling, bruising, and scarring.

Creating a cut is much like creating a scar. Follow steps 1-4 in creating a scar and then use the spatula to create a ‘cut’ down the center of the wax. Next, apply foundation around the cut to blend with the color of the skin. Apply red paint from the abrasion wheel to give a look of irritation and swelling. Add other colors, if necessary, to create the dramatic look you are hoping to achieve. With a thin brush, gently apply the stage paint into the open cut. You may also choose to dab the stage blood to create a look of dripping blood.

Fun Facts About Fruits and Vegetables For Kids

Did you know that there are purple potatoes? They get this colour from the anthocyanins in them which are also found in berries such as blueberries, blackberries and blackcurrants, as well as purple or black carrots? These anthocyanins have powerful antioxidant properties which help protect us against cancer. The poor potato was not well received in Europe when it was first introduced in the 15th century and in one town in France and edict was passed forbidding people to grow potatoes because it was thought (wrongly) that they caused   leprosy . Later the queen of France, Marie-Antoinette and the ladies of her court wore potato flowers in the hair.

Across the English Channel, the ladies of James I’s (James VI’s of Scotland) wore carrot tops in their hair as decorations. You can eat carrot tops as they are rich in vitamin K which carrots do not contain. Purple and red carrots are wonderful and taste sweeter than orange ones. There are yellow carrots too, but all carrots were purple until the 16th century when the Dutch bred the orange ones from mutant carrots in honour of their royal family the House of Orange.

Broccoli and cauliflower are actually flowers, although we eat them as vegetables. George W. Bush hates broccoli.

Peas were eaten dried by European peasants as the fresh ones were very expensive. They kept them for the winter months when they were dried, and even when eating fresh peas became popular in Britain in the 17th century, the ordinary people couldn’t afford them. When Catherine de Medici left Italy to marry Henri II of France, she took piselli novelli with her. These were the tiny peas that the French instantly took too and called them petit pois (little peas) by which name they are still known today. Here’s an anonymous rhyme about the difficulty of eating fresh green peas:

“I eat my peas with honey,

I’ve done it all my life.

It makes the peas taste funny,

But it keeps them on my knife.”

Did you know that Norma Jean Baker, who was better known as the actress Marilyn Monroe was crowned Artichoke Queen in 1947 in Castroville California? The artichoke grows on a plant that looks like a thistle and is considered a gourmet vegetable. It comes from Italy originally and the head of the plant turns towards the sun just as sunflowers do.

In Southern India, eggplants cooked over a flame with onions, chilies, salt and rice are thought to prevent you from catching chicken pox. Eggplants or aubergines are related to the tomato and potato.

Fruit can be interesting too, for example, there is a snake fruit which is called this because its skin looks like a snake’s, with scales (or it looks as though it has scales). The fruit itself is actually white, like a lychee.

A banana doesn’t actually come from a tree, but a very tall herb which can grow to around twenty feet high. These plants don’t have a very stable root system so you can actually knock over a banana tree.

An apple a day may very well keep the doctor away, especially if you eat the skin as this contains most of the nutrients. There are more than 7,000 varieties of apple grown around the world, and if you were to plant 100 apple trees from the seeds taken from the apples of one apple tree, none of them would be exactly the same.

The tomato is a fruit although we use it as a vegetable, and it was once thought to be a “wolf peach” described by ancient Roman writers. The wolf peach wasn’t a peach at all but something that looked pretty and contained poison to kill the wolves which ate them.

The only fruit to have its seeds on the outside is the strawberry!

There are a lot more interesting things to discover about fruit and vegetables, they aren’t as boring as you might have thought.

Alcoholic Liver Disease

Alcoholic liver disease occurs due to an acute or chronic inflammation of the liver due to alcohol abuse. This disease usually occurs after a prolonged use of alcohol. In the United States 10% of men and 3% of women suffer from problems related to alcoholic consumption.

The occurrence of the disease depends on the amount of alcohol consumed and the duration it is consumed in. The greater the duration and greater the amount leads to a greater chance for liver disease to occur.

Other factors include the toxicity of ethanol to the liver, susceptibility to the disease, and genetic factors. Studies have shown that women may be more susceptible than men. The disease starts as inflammation (hepatitis) and progresses to fatty liver and cirrhosis. Alcoholism generally leads to three pathologically different liver diseases. They are the fatty liver ( Steatosis), hepatitis and cirrhosis.

The disease will not show any symptoms until it advances. Complications that arise are alcoholic encephalopathy and portal hypertension.

The symptoms include loss of appetite, nausea, jaundice, abdominal pain, fever, ascites, weight gain, mental confusion, excessive thirst, dry mouth and fatigue.

Other symptoms are vomiting blood, bloody bowel movements, paleness,   fainting , lethargic movement, fluctuating mood, impaired judgement and confusion.

Liver function tests and liver biopsy are the common tests done to detect the disease. Treatment includes the discontinuation of alcoholic use, providing high calorie, high carbohydrate diet to break down the protein present in the patient’s body. Counseling and rehabilitaion may prove necessary for the patients.

Liver transplants become necessary if the situation advances to cirrhosis. Once the patient becomes medically stable, there is a need to abstain from drinking. Although stopping drinking may result in the reversal of fatty liver and hepatitis, liver cirrhosis may continue, but progressive liver deterioration can be checked.

Cancer Markers

There, I said it – the big C word. No one wants to hear it. You may have a family member who has it, be a survivor yourself, or know someone who has died from it.

Since I have PBC (primary biliary cirrhosis) I am concerned about liver cancer. I have blood tests every so many months to keep an eye on my liver enzyme levels. There is a high incidence of liver cancer resulting from individuals who have had liver cirrhosis.

You may have been curious how doctors can tell what stage of cancer a person has.

Alpha-fetoprotein or AFP is a type of tumor marker which is used to diagnose cancer. These markers are used to determine which stage of cancer a patient has. Tumor markers are substances (mostly proteins) that are produced by the body or by the tumor itself in response to cancer.

A high reading of certain proteins in a urine or blood sample may indicate a more aggressive cancer. Usually, the higher the resulting number of the marker, the higher the stage of cancer.

Where symptoms suggest cancer in a patient, urine and blood samples are taken and submitted to a laboratory to be tested for cancer tumor marker levels.

The results assist the physician in determining if a patient has cancer. They can also help diagnose the type of cancer the patient has.

Cancer markers also are useful in determining the prognosis for the patient. They are also used to check to see if cancer has returned after remission.

A biopsy is taken once a diagnosis of cancer has been made, and again tumor markers can help to determine the amount of cancer that is present in the patient’s body.

Advanced cancer is indicated by higher tumor marker levels and the prognosis is less positive.

With the help of cancer markers, a doctor can then determine the best treatment for the patient.

Types of Cancer Markers

Some of the most common cancer markers (AFP) are used for diagnosing the following cancers:

  • Liver
  • Ovarian
  • Breast
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Pancreatic
  • Lung
  • Colon
  • Prostate

Cancer research is ongoing in hopes to discover tumor markers for other types of cancers.

Not just one tumor marker is used for all cancers, and not all cancers have tumor markers that work specifically for their diagnosis and treatment.

Once cancer treatment has been started by a patient, they will need to have further testing with tumor markers to see if their particular treatment is working.

If the tumor marker level declines, it usually is an indication that the current treatment is working.

If the level increases or stays the same, the physician may try a different form of treatment.

It is important that a certain amount of time has passed between cancer marker testing to give the treatment a chance to work on the tumor.

Drawbacks of Cancer Markers

There are only a few cancer markers that are able to find cancer in the early stages. In fact, there are certain noncancerous diseases which may contribute to a high tumor marker level.

On occasion, cancer marker levels may not be elevated in a person who really has cancer. It is important that all tests are taken into consideration, including a complete physical examination, history of the patient, other laboratory tests and scans.

Another drawback of testing with markers is that sometimes you get a false positive. There are a few factors that might contribute to an inaccurate lab test. Certain medications can alter the results of blood and urine tests, including Vitamin C, Naproxen Sodium or Tylenol. Some antibiotics can also affect the tests.

False positives rates for cancer marker tests are usually 5 per cent. For other false positives or false negatives and their causes go to this link.

Personally, I have lost a boss to cancer from smoking. It was not lung, but nose cancer. He was way too young to die, and was a very kind man. He was a chain smoker.

I am glad that research continues on these types of markers to help in detecting cancer cells early on so a person has a better chance of surviving.

If you have peculiar symptoms, breast changes, weight loss, unusual bleeding, unexplained fatigue, gnawing pain, indigestion, changes in lymph nodes, depression, or persistent cough or sore that will not heal, go to see your doctor. It is better to be tested early rather than wait until it is too late to treat it.

Assistive Technology For People With Disabilities

The only thing “disabling” about living with a disability is the inconvenience presented by things designed to suit the needs of most people. If you are in a wheelchair, a long flight of stairs presents a challenge. By removing barriers to access-for example by building wheelchair ramps-it’s possible to minimize the inconvenience for people with disabilities. While ramps are no new invention, there are numerous technologies that can be used to aid the disabled.

Assistive technologies are applications of modern technology to make it easier for people with disabilities to live their lives independently and with confidence. The first law specifically advocating the development of assistive technology is the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988. Since then numerous laws have been passed to expand the use of assistive technologies and support their development.

Many of the earliest applications of assistive technology were for people with hearing difficulty. For decades now, telecommunications companies have been required to provide systems that convert between text and speech for the hard of hearing, including teletext and closed captioning. These systems were implemented before the development of effective computer-based text-to-speech, so they were carried out by people trained to listen and type in real time.

Assistive technologies for computer use have boomed in recent years as access to computers and the internet have become a crucial component of modern life. With the help of screen readers and similar technology, people with visual impairments can use the internet almost as easily as a person without visual impairments. This has enabled the visually impaired to have access to the wealth of information available online.

Aside from technologies for the hearing- and visually-impaired, people with other kinds of disabilities also benefit from technology. Mobility technology and durable medical equipment allow people with conditions like cerebral palsy to get around independently-something that would have been nearly impossible not long ago. Mobility technologies have also helped many elderly people live much fuller lives than they would otherwise.

If you live with a disability, you can seek financial assistance from the Social Security Administration to help you pay for assistive technology. The process of receiving social security benefits can be a difficult one, however. Only a lawyer can help you successfully get the technology you need.

The experienced Indiana disability lawyers of the Hankey Law Office are here to help you. To discuss your case directly with an Indianapolis disability attorney, call the Hankey Law Office today.

Positive Attitude – How to Unlearn Sickness and Stop Catching Disease

Health or sickness; wealth or poverty; success or failure — all begin in the mind. Your physical body and material affairs reflect your state of mind. With the right positive attitude and a strong belief in health you can prevent sickness from entering your life.

Do you Expect to Get Sick?

Most people have been mentally conditioned to accept sickness from the beginning of their lives. From the minute you are born, you are taught to believe in sickness. You learn that you are supposed to be sick at certain times of the year. You learn to believe in the very idea of sickness.

While you are growing up, your parents expect you to get a whole catalog of diseases that the so-called medical authorities say children are supposed to catch. You are supposed to have the measles and the mumps, whooping cough and chicken pox. And as your got older, you ‘learned’ that certain aches and pains were to be expected with middle age. Many parents have unconsciously conditioned their children to expect sickness.

I remember when I was a child, whenever I sneezed, my mother would tell me that I was catching a cold. And without fail, every time I sneezed I would end up catching that cold. In fact, I was so conditioned by this childhood experience, that for years, every time I sneezed, I would subconsciously hear my mother saying, ” You’re getting a cold.” That simple statement had an effect on me until I learned to master my own thinking.

You Can ‘Unlearn’ Sickness and Know Health.

I learned that if I stopped thinking sickness and stopped expecting sickness, I would stop getting sick. And I learned to block any idea of sickness out of my mind and out of my life!

Think Health and Speak Health!

Most people are just too interested in what’s wrong with them and what’s wrong with the world. They give negative ideas all of their attention, and negative conditions continue to enter their lives. I am always warning you that the more you give your attention to negative conditions, the more negative conditions you will have. The more you think and talk about your symptoms and your aches and pains, the more symptoms and aches and pains you are going to have.

Think Only Positive Thoughts About Health.

It is very important to only let your mind think positive thoughts about health. It is very important to only let your mouth say positive things about health. Watch what you think or say, lest you become “ensnared by the words of your mouth.” (Proverbs 6:2)

Never think thoughts such as, “I think I’m getting a cold,” or “I’ll never get over this sickness,” or “I’ve got a bad back.” These negative thoughts cause you to get sick and prevent you from getting well. Instead, say to yourself on a regular basis, “I AM healthy and I will stay healthy … God-in-me is my health.” This positive affirmation heals you and keeps you well.

So if you don’t want the disease that the national disease center plans for you this year, refuse to believe in it. Refuse to take part in any idea of sickness. Say to yourself, “God-in-me is my health.” Learn the mastery of your own mind and your own thinking, and the negative beliefs entertained by the world-mind will no longer influence you.

Humeral Fracture Brace – Sarmiento Style – What This Orthosis Does – Where To Find One Near You

Humeral Fracture Orthopedic Braces – Sarmiento Style

1.) Description: A humeral fracture brace is provided to a patient to help provide support to their arm. Without something supporting a person’s humerus after a fracture the pain will most likely escalate on a day to day basis. In addition, there is less of a chance that the fracture will heal properly.

2.) Prior to Getting a Humeral Fracture Brace

Usually, a patient will have on a splint, if they have seen their doctor first. This splint is placed on over the injured humerus to help stabilize a fracture in the emergency room, for example. The fracture may be reduced by a physician in the emergency room and this splint will hold the patient until they see a licensed orthotist for their Sarmiento brace. Usually, some swelling may reduce from the time a patient sees their doctor until the time they see the licensed orthotist. – (This is an example and not every situation follows this blue print. Some people may go straight into a humeral fracture brace, for example.)

3.) What Does A Sarmiento Style, Humeral Fracture Brace Really Do?

This kind of orthosis (brace / external support) helps to provide compression to the soft tissue around the humeral fracture. In this way, the brace helps to promote healing and it will help the patient to feel more secure as well. – Often times this brace looks like a “clam shell”, made from plastic and padding that forms a cylinder around the humerus. Depending on where the fracture is in the humerus, there may be a shoulder cuff placed on the orthosis that will help to provide more support. Hinges at the elbow can be incorporated as well if the fracture is very close to the elbow.

In addition, a sling or “collar and cuff” can be used in conjunction with this orthosis. Why? – The forearm in most cases will be left alone and a sling or “collar and cuff” will help to secure the forearm to the body. Patients usually feel more secure when they: A.) Have the brace on, and B.) have their arm and forearm close to their body.

4.) Where to Get A Humeral Fracture Brace

It is best to get this kind of a brace from a licensed orthotist in your area. If you would like for this type of orthopedic brace to be billed to your health insurance it is important to bring your insurance card and ID with you to the brace company. A prescription will be needed as well from your physician to have the orthosis billed to your insurance. Many times the orthotics and prosthetics company (brace provider in this scenario) can facilitate a claim on your behalf. Full coverage does not happen every time, but many times at least a large portion of the brace may be covered.

Note:This is health information, not medical advice. Sometimes different versions of a humeral fracture braces may be used, for example. This article is meant to give you some background information on common humeral fracture brace procedures and not all brace providers approach these braces the exact same way for each patient.

9 Different Ways You Can Break Your Bones and How to Treat Them

A fracture means that one or more of your bones have been broken due to an impact with more force or pressure than your bones can support.

Fractures can be open or closed. Open fractures occur when the ends of a broken bone break the skin and are exposed. Closed fractures are also known as simple fractures, and happen when the bone does not break the skin.

Fractures can also be classified by the way the bone breaks:

  • Greenstick fracture: an incomplete fracture in which the bone only breaks on one side, while the other side is merely bent.
  • Torus fracture: an incomplete fracture where the bone is broken on one side and this causes a bump on the other side.
  • Non-displaced fracture: when a bone breaks into even pieces that can be aligned in place afterwards.
  • Displaced fracture: when a bone breaks into pieces that cannot be aligned.
  • Hairline fracture: as the name suggests, this fracture occurs when the bone is broken in a thin crack.
  • Single fracture: when the bone only breaks in one place.
  • Compression fracture: when the bone is crushed.
  • Comminuted fracture: when the bone is crushed or broken in three or more pieces.
  • Segmental fracture: when the bone breaks in two places, leaving a piece of bone unattached.

Regardless of the type of bone fracture, the following symptoms are usually present:

  • Swelling, bruising, or bleeding.
  • Intense pain.
  • Inability or limited ability to move the affected area.
  • Numbness or tingling over the affected area.

What To Do When Someone Breaks a Bone

Immediate medical attention is required for any person who has just suffered from a bone fracture. Call 911 or transport the person to the nearest hospital for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Some of the immediate steps you can take when someone suffers from a broken bone are:

ยท If the person has suffered major trauma or injury and they are unresponsive or not breathing, begin CPR and call 911.

  • Do not move the person unless absolutely necessary.
  • If there is any bleeding, apply pressure to the wound with a clean cloth to stop the bleeding.
  • Immobilize the broken limb but do not try to realign and push the bone back into place.
  • If there is swelling, wrap an ice pack in a piece of cloth and apply to the affected area to reduce swelling and relieve pain.
  • If the person feels faint or is having trouble breathing, ask them to lie down and elevate the legs in order to treat for shock.

What to Do to Prevent Bone Fractures

Nobody wants to go through the pain and discomfort that come with a broken bone. In addition to taking precautions when practicing activities that put you at risk of bone fractures, such as driving, practicing sports, etc. these are some other measures you can take to prevent breaking one or more bones:

  • Meeting your required daily intake of calcium: Calcium is needed to maintain healthy and strong bones. It is recommended that men and women under 50 intake 1,000 mg of calcium every day, while people over 50 should increase their calcium intake to 1,200 mg every day.
  • Meeting your required daily intake of vitamin D: Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. The recommended amount of vitamin D for people under 70 years of age is 0.015 mg (or 15mcg). People over 70 should increase their intake of vitamin D to 0.020 mg (or 20mcg).
  • Reduce sodium consumption: The more sodium a person consumes, the more calcium they need in order to excrete urine. Maintain your sodium consumption low so that you can retain the calcium you need for your bones.

Breaking bones can be very painful, so make sure you take the steps necessary to prevent this from happening. However, no one is immune to accidents, so if you or someone you know ever suffers from a broken bone, be sure to look for the symptoms mentioned in this article, follow the instructions provided, and get medical attention as soon as possible.

Cerebral Palsy Baby Pictures Aren’t A Good Diagnosis

People sometimes get the wrong idea looking at cerebral palsy baby pictures. This condition can affect the facial muscles in a way that makes the child look confused or makes them drool. Because of this, they can look mentally handicapped even when they aren’t.

When cerebral palsy pictures are taken of older children, this is even more the case. In young infants, you might not pick up on such symptoms. Young babies drool a good deal of the time normally.

In cerebral palsy, the brain is unable to properly control the body. In many cases, the disorder is caused by birth injury, although it sometimes happens later. Palsy symptoms will normally appear within the child’s first few years of age. The symptoms will not usually get worse as they get older.

Cerebral palsy as four varieties including spastic, athetoid/dyskinetic, ataxic and, finally, mixed. The mixed variety is a combination of two or more of the other types. Symptoms will be dependent on the variety of cerebral palsy.

Stiff or difficult movement will result from spastic cerebral palsy. A loss of balance and depth perception is present in ataxic. Involuntary or uncontrolled movements are the symptoms of athetoid/dyskinetic.

The spastic variety can be divided further into three different types. Spastic diplegia will manifest in leg and hip muscles that are tight. The legs then cross at the knees which makes it difficult to walk.

Spastic hemiplegia will affect only one side of the person’s body and this will be stiff. Proper development of arms and legs can be affected on that side. Also, in some cases, the upper limb will be affected more than the leg.

The severest type is spastic quadriplegia. In this case, the whole body is affected and there is likely to be mental handicapping also. It will be hard to walk and talk and the child may have seizures.

It can take time before you realize that the child is experiencing problems in development. Babies develop at different rates and the range of what is normal is quite broad. It can also be hard to tell because of the varying severity of symptoms. If only mild symptoms are present, it is much harder to determine that you should be concerned.

Among the many symptoms that may be present are weak muscles, difficult in sitting up, difficulty in moving from one position to another, difficulty with motor skills, shaking, uncontrollable movements of torso or limbs, losing control of tongue, difficulty sucking and drooling. Children displaying one or more of these should be taken to a specialist for accurate assessment.

You cannot know the whole story just from cerebral palsy baby pictures. If a child is suspected of having the disorder, it will require professional help to diagnose. Although it may appear there is a mental handicap, many people who have it, have intelligence that is above average.

Bell’s Palsy Primer

What is Bell’s palsy?

Bell’s palsy is a form of facial   paralysis  with no known cause. It is generally considered a diagnosis of exclusion and is made when all other causes of facial  paralysis  have been ruled out. To be considered Bell’s palsy, a facial  paralysis  should involve all the muscle groups on one side of the face, be sudden in onset, have the absence of signs of central nervous system disease, and have an absence of signs of ear or cerebellopontine angle disease. Care must be taken in the initial workup of Bell’s palsy to ensure that the facial  paralysis  is not caused by tumor, autoimmune disease, or other causes.

What causes Bell’s palsy?

The exact cause of Bell’s palsy is unknown. There are several proposed causes but none have been definitely proven.

How do you treat Bell’s palsy?

There is no consensus on the treatment of Bell’s palsy. Most physicians will consider a mixture of steroid treatment, antiviral treatment, and in the most severe cases surgery.

Patients who suffer from Bell’s palsy or any type of facial  paralysis  have several obstacles to overcome. The first is drooling which can occur because of lack of motor control of the lips. The second and more important is ensuring that the eyes remain moist and do not dry out. With facial  paralysis , the normal tearing mechanism does not function properly and patients can suffer from dry eyes which can lead to corneal abrasions and problems with vision. To counter this, patients must regularly use eyedrops and sometimes undergo procedures to close the eyelids until function has returned.

What is the prognosis with Bell’s palsy?

Fortunately, complete recovery is the rule after an episode of Bell’s palsy. Approximately 80-90% of patients will recover completely. Of the remaining patient’s most will recover some if not most of their facial nerve function without a significant complication.

What if I don’t have return of function?

Though rare, persistent facial  paralysis  after Bell’s palsy can be a debilitating problem. For patients with facial  paralysis  of any cause, not just Bell’s palsy, there are several options for rehabilitation.

  • When paralyzed, the brow can droop causing difficulty seeing. In order to counter this droop, a surgery can be performed which raises the brow and sets it in a new position. The procedure is similar to forehead lifts performed for cosmetic reasons.
  • Closing the eye completely can be a problem in patients with facial  paralysis  because of inability to control the orbicularis oculi muscle. By implanting a gold weight into the upper eyelid, the eyelid can be helped to close and thereby keep the eye from drying out.
  • Patients who have facial  paralysis  can have pull down of the lower eyelid and difficulty keeping the eye moist. In order to combat this problem, several procedures can be undertaken. First, if the lower eyelid is lax, a lower eyelid tightening procedure called a canthoplasty or canthopexy can be performed. Second, in order to take the weight off of the lower eyelid causing the pulldown, a midface lift can be performed to pull the cheek back into its normal position.
  • For patients who suffer from drooling because of difficulty moving their mouth and difficulty breathing through their nose because of collapse of their nose several procedures are available which can help. By taking tissue from the leg, using synthetic material, or using the masseter muscle, a connection can be made between the masseter or temporalis muscle which are not controlled by the facial nerve to the muscles surrounding the mouth and nose. In this way, by clenching the teeth, the muscle is pulled tight and the patient can appear to smile and close the mouth. Though this takes some training, it can be a useful adjunct to other procedures for facial rehabilitation.

While this is not a complete list of possibilities, evaluation of a patient with persistent facial  paralysis  should be undertaken by a neurologist or head and neck surgery specialist.
