Cicatricial Alopecia

Cicatricial  alopecia  refers to a group of rare skin diseases in which hair follicle get destroyed and replaced by scar tissue. It is one of the rare causes of hair loss. Hair loss could be gradual or sudden. Hair loss could be without any symptoms or it could present with sever itching, burning and pain. There is usually no visible scar, because the inflammation is below the level of skin. Cicatricial  alopecia  could occur in otherwise healthy men and women of all ages.

Cicatricial  alopecias  could be primary or secondary. This discussion is confined to the primary cicatricial  alopecias  in which the hair follicle is the target of the destructive inflammatory process. In secondary cicatricial  alopecias , a non-follicle-directed process or external injury, such as severe infections, burns, radiation, or tumors could cause destruction of the hair follicle.

The causes of the cicatricial  alopecias  are not completely known. However, all cicatricial  alopecias  involve inflammation directed at the hair follicle, the upper part of the follicle where the stem cells and sebaceous gland are located are generally involved. Permanent hair loss occurs when the stem cells and the sebaceous glands are destroyed. This type of hair loss is usually irreversible.

Cicatricial  alopecias  can affect both men and women. The majority of patients with cicatricial  alopecia  have no family history of a similar condition. Central centrifugal  alopecia  is a type of cicatricial  alopecia  that is more prevalent among black woman. Frontal fibrosing  alopecia  on the other hand is seen most commonly in post-menopausal women.

could be seen in association with chronic skin conditions such as lupus erythematosus and in people with personal or family history of autoimmune disorder. A scalp biopsy is necessary for diagnosis of cicatricial  alopecia . Presence of inflammatory cells and scarring could be diagnostic and essential for determining the type of treatment.

Treatment of the lymphocytic group of cicatricial  alopecias  involves use of anti-inflammatory medications such as steroids, cyclosporine, hydroxychloroquine. When hair follicle destroyed, hair will not grow back. However in some cases using minoxidil solution can help to stimulate growth of some of the remaining hair. Hair transplant could only be used in the patients who have normal healthy hair in donor area. If hair multiplication becomes a reality in the future that might potentially be an option for patients who lost their scalp hair extensively as result of this condition. Dr. Parsa Mohebi, a Los Angeles hair transplant surgeon offers free evaluation for all hair loss patients.

How to Prevent Seborrheic Dermatitis Hair Loss

Hair loss is one of the problems that affect both the body and the mind. Hair loss indicates that all is not well with the body. Hair loss normally occurs due to some nutritional deficiency, due to a scalp problem or as a side effect of some disease.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a kind of skin problem in which the scalp and areas like nose, eyebrows and back develop dry, itchy, red patches. The causes for this problem include excessive sebum production, hormonal imbalance, fungal infection, obesity, stress etc. It is important to treat this problem in time so that it does not cause side effects like hair loss.

The main reason for Seborrheic dermatitis hair loss is the excessive secretion of sebum. Sebum creates a favorable environment for the fungus Pityrosporum ovale. The fungus along with bacteria causes skin inflammation and irritation. Due to this, the hair follicles get damaged and the hair starts falling.

There are many treatments that can help prevent Seborrheic dermatitis hair loss. One of this is to keep your scalp clean with mild anti-dandruff shampoo. Cleaning the scalp keeps it free from oil and dirt. This in turn prevents fungus and bacteria from thriving which is the main cause of inflammation. Some people may not experience relief with mild antidandruff shampoos and may need to use shampoos that contain coal tar, sulfur, salicylic acid, or zinc. Besides using medicated anti fungal shampoos, the application of topical cortisone solutions or creams also help in reducing itchiness and inflammation.

There are many shampoos and creams available for treating Seborrheic dermatitis. However, you should consult your doctor who can prescribe you a shampoo and ointment depending upon your problem and its severity. For areas other than scalp affected with Seborrheic dermatitis, you should apply cortisone cream. Some doctors also prescribe antibiotics and Vitamin B complex supplements to patients.

There are many natural methods to arrest this problem. One of it is the regular intake of flaxseed with water. The application of aloe vera on the scalp is also known to reduce the inflammation and help control this problem. The consumption of garlic reduces the fungal infection as it has antiseptic properties and hence helps to treat Seborrheic dermatitis hair loss. Eating fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene and antioxidants like apples, oranges, and spinach also reduces the skin inflammation. Seborrheic dermatitis hair loss is temporary. Once the skin inflammation reduces, hair starts growing again. However, even after the symptoms subside, you should take adequate precautions to prevent the recurrence of this problem. You should avoid direct sunlight and use dehumidifiers, as that will reduce the problem of skin inflammation and hence prevent hair loss.

Besides the above, it is necessary to lead a stress-free and healthy life. Your diet should include all the essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients. This will help prevent hair loss and also help the new hair grow.

Ear Pain Causes and Symptoms

Ear pain is one of the chief complaints for both adults and children. It is important for the cause of the ear pain to be determined before tying to treat the symptom. This can be the symptom of a direct cause or an indirect cause (pain which originates from another region of the body and radiates into the ear). Treatment of ear pain will depend entirely on the underlying cause. Treatment can range from antibiotics to surgery. In fact for some causes of it, there is no real way to prevent the pain, only to treat the symptom itself. It is important to take care of your ears by avoiding loud environments without protection and keeping all objects including cotton swabs our of the ear canal.

Some of the more common causes of ear pain are:

* Ear trauma

This includes slapping or blunt force on the exterior of the ear, loud sounds or blasts of sounds, and excessive ear picking.

* Ear conditions

Ear conditions vary and can be from bacteria causing ear infections, middle ear infection or   otitis  media. Having a build up of wax holding fluid in can cause pain. Swimmer’s ear is when water becomes trapped in the ear canal and causes pain. A foreign object stuck in the ear, a perforation of the tympanic membrane, a boil in the canal, cold sores or ulcers in the ear canal and cancer of the ear are all types of ear conditions that can cause pain. There are far too many ear conditions to list them all, this is only a list of some of the more common conditions.

* External ear pain

Again these can be external ear trauma that does not impact the inner or middle ear. External hematoma, boils, or skin cancer can cause external pain of the ear.

* Underlying causes of referred ear pain

This is when pain originates in one place and radiates into the ear. Dental work or periodontal abscess, along with other dental disorders often cause ear pain. Infections of the throat or sinus passage way, along with tonsillitis, pharyngitis tumors or cancer of the tongue, larynx, or spine can cause ear pain. TMJ disorder or jaw arthritis are tow skeletal disorders that can cause ear pain. Barotrauma which often referred to as ear popping when a person is involved in air travel or scuba diving. Certain kinds of nerve disorders can cause this; as can various skin disorders such as eczema and dermatitis. Glue ear is relatively unheard of but actually is the culprit of many ear pain patients. It is a condition when the fluid accumulates in the middle ear.

Again treatment for ear pain depends upon the underlying cause. The list above barely scratches the surface of the under lying cause that could be resulting in pain. When ever you have ear pain or ringing in your ears, you should contact your health care professional for medical treatment. Only a trained health care professional we be able to determine what the cause is.

Deaf or Suffering From Hearing Loss As a Result of Any Work

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) the average number of cases of noise induced hearing loss caused or made worse by working conditions between the ears of 2009/10 to 2011/12 is 19,000 cases. This is a significantly high number considering that industrial deafness is a condition which can be easily avoided within the workplace.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1978 states that an employer must take relevant steps in order to protect their employees from the risks of hearing impairment when they are exposed to excessively loud noise on a continuous basis. This can include providing their employees with hearing protection such as earplugs or ear defenders, soundproofing their machinery where possible and providing training to all of their employees and any visitors to the premises on the dangers of exposure to excessive noise. They must also place signs around the building so that any person on the premises is made aware when they are entering an excessively noisy zone.

There are primarily two different ways in which you may be able to receive compensation if you believe that you are deaf or suffering from hearing loss as a result of any work that you are carrying out or have carried out in the past. The first of this is to apply for an industrial injuries disablement benefit. To be eligible for this you must have been employed within England, Scotland or Wales, however there can be some exceptions to this rule so it is best to seek the advice from the regional industrial injuries disablement benefit Centre. IIDB is a type of compensation which is paid out on a weekly basis and the amount which you could receive will depend entirely on your own personal circumstances. To be eligible for compensation you will have to be assessed by medical adviser and your hearing loss will be placed on a scale between 1% and 100%. As a general rule you would need to be assessed as 40% disabled or more to be able to get the benefit.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) state that around 150 new claims for noise induced hearing loss disablement benefit where assessed within 2011 and since the year of 2007, all new cases have been a while to males. The industries with the largest number of new cases where employees have become deaf or suffered from hearing loss includes: energy and water supply, manufacturing, construction and extraction.

The other way in which you can also receive compensation if you are deaf or suffering from hearing loss as a result of working in an excessively noisy environment is to consult with a no win no fee solicitors firm who specialise in claiming for compensation for industrial diseases. It is highly advisable to seek the help of a solicitor who work on a no win no fee basis so that you are not at risk of having any outstanding fees should your case be unsuccessful. You should also consult with a solicitors firm who specialise within the field of compensation claims for industrial disease, this way you can be assured that you have the best possible chance of making a successful claim.

UK law states that any employer has a duty of care towards their employees and any visitors to their site. The employer must carry out a regular risk assessment so that they can clearly assess the level of noise of which the employees are consistently exposed to. Following any risk assessment an employer must than act upon any recommendations that are provided, such as installing soundproofing for any machinery. If an employer is aware of any hazardous areas where excessive noise is a problem that can be a risk to their employees and fail to take any preventative measures then they are fully liable should an employee become deaf or developing a hearing loss as a result of this.

If you are considering contacting a no win no fee compensation claims solicitor in order to start your claim for your hearing loss then it is important to have the following information available, as they will ask you some basic questions in order to determine your eligibility to make a claim. For example:

• Who were you working for when you were exposed to the excessively loud noise?
• How long were you working for the company?
• Have you sought any form of medical advice for your hearing problems?
• Did any symptoms of your hearing impairment get reported to your employer?
• Do you believe that your employer was in anyway negligent towards your health and safety at work? For example did they fail to provide you with any form of hearing protection or train you on the risks of working in an area where you were exposed to excessively loud noise?
• Have you made any attempt in the past to claim compensation for your hearing loss?
During your free initial consultation the solicitor will usually ask you the basic questions above and from your response to these questions, they will then be able to assess whether you are eligible to make a compensation claim or not. Following this you will then be able to make a decision on whether you wish to proceed with your compensation claim.

The amount of compensation which you may be eligible for will depend entirely on your own personal circumstances, for example how long you were exposed to the excessive loud noise for, the severity of your condition e.g. whether you are completely deaf or suffer from minor hearing loss and whether your employer is seen to have been in in anyway negligent towards your health and safety at work. If you believe that you have become deaf and you now suffer from hearing loss as a result of the work you have carried out in a noisy industry than it is important to seek the advice from a trained compensation claim solicitor as soon as possible.

Aura Color Meanings

You are a living Rainbow, just like many of the non-physical messengers surrounding you as spiritual guides! Each color in your aura is the combination of the electro magnetic frequencies emanating from your body. Your aura field where all of the colors are constantly shifting and changing reveals to the fine tuned psychic eye, as well as the very developed physical eye, your thoughts, emotions and actions in the present, the past and can also give you a very clear idea of where you are headed in the future.

You can use this article as a simple reference guide to learn about each color in your aura as well as some combination of aura colors. Yet it is important to understand each individual color that might appear consistently or temporarily in your aura also has meaning to how it specifically relates to you.

In an interpretation of the aura color meaning, a combination of colors, as well as each and every aura color have both a negative and positive meaning. Each aura color meaning and in what shape or form it appears, is important to know and acknowledge consciously, as it is giving you an opportunity to be aware of and continue with your healthy behavior patterns that are propelling you towards your dreams by helping you be aware of any unhealthy negative behavior pattern/s that need to be addressed, healed and overturned.

As follows, is how the aura colors meaning have been revealed to me and how they translate for you in terms of my aura paintings, aura portraits, readings and or consultations.

The Aura Color Meanings:

Red, is the color of the root Chakra and if showing in your aura in a positive aspect, would be revealing you are full of the life energy force that will express as an extremely passionate about every thing individual. You are grounded and very active, because you are vibrant with the joy of life and your attitude continuously restores your energy.

Where as, a muddy red in your aura reveals its negative expression displaying you are holding onto anger. The anger may be due to something in your past lives or current past life, or the actual moment. It also matters how much red appears in your aura and its placement in your aura field. The amount and placement will disclose your willingness to face and work through your anger in a healthy conscious manner, or if you are resisting it, thereby creating even more anger related experiences to manifest in your life.

Orange is the color of the naval Chakra and if appearing in your aura is the color of inspiration; meaning in Spirit. If you have a lot of orange in your aura, then you have recently been inspired to do something, say something, express some part of the true divinity of you. If the Orange is muted with an overlay of other colors crossing over it, then you have not been paying attention to your inspiration, the speaker of your feelings coming from your heart’s desire.

Yellow, the color of pure joy and is the color of the solar plexus Chakra. Everyone’s aura painting should have the color yellow. When it appears as a light creamy hue like butter, you are peaceful due to a solid trust in self. If it is a bright and radiant bold yellow it is similar to the happiness we feel when we are joyfully and peacefully experiencing a warm sunny day.

Yellow represents the mental body, as well; so when in the aura yellow-green is combined together, especially if the yellow overlays the green, it usually means you are mentally interfering with your own desire for happiness. You are overly analytical having to dissect every decision before moving forward. Too much mental activity will always interfere with making the peaceful positive feel good choices towards manifesting your dreams. A yellow-green combination represents healing present in the aura on a mental, emotional and or physical level.

Green the color of the heart Chakra and when green appears as a vibrant emerald green it is telling you that yu not only have an immediate opportunity to heal anything but that you may also be a healer in some form as well. Depending on where it is positioned in your aura field it will reveal what exactly needs to be healed within you and whether it is seated in your mental, emotional, physical or spiritual body.

Blue is the color of the throat Chakra and when the color blue appears, especially that of a cobalt blue you are usually gifted with multiple communication skills. When appearing in its negative aspect this usually states that you have difficulty speaking up and it is time for you to be your truth by speaking your truth. Blue can also disclose whether the masculine aspect physical role model was either present or absent in your life.

Pink is the color of self-love and most people do not address the color pink in the aura. It is not often seen in everyone’s aura because we as humans suffer severely from its unhealthy expression of a lack of love for self. The energy of pink is most needed and empowering element within us, as it is what fuels the fires of being valuable and deserving. The appearance of pink in your aura will allow you to see where, why, and how much of this energy you are needing to heal the incorrect belief of being less than.

Indigo is the color of the third eye Chakra and It is actually the combination of Red and Blue in your aura. If it is appearing negatively it is a warning that you need to apply more life force energy to the passionate truth of who you are. Indigo in its positive aspect represents that you are an individual that will be firmly committed to your beliefs and will do almost anything to make sure that your personal life, as well as those you love and the world at large live in balance and harmony. If you have a great deal of Indigo in your aura field you will not stand for anything less than the absolute highest truth of all things.

Violet represents the crown chakra as well as St. Germaine and the transmutable violet flame. When violet shows up in your aura painting in a positive fashion, its means you are a master of transforming the negative to the positive. Violet appearing as its negative counterpart represents that there is deeply embedded trauma within you which has continued to be buried or avoided. The good part here is that both the positive and negative aspect normally show up together, meaning despite any past traumatic experiences, you have the ability to change it all around for the good. When Violet appears with a gold and or silver, then you are mastered in the use of this energy, a true alchemist.

There are multiple more subtle colors that may appear in your aura, like turquoise, magenta, silver and gold. These colors have were not often spoken of in the past because they are beyond that of the interpretation of the physical colors of the rainbow and have only been appearing in aura fields in the past decade or so.

You may be predominately displaying one of these specific higher dimensional colors or a combination of turquoise, magenta, silver or gold and including the complete rainbow of colors within you.

Alcohol Abuse Effects – 5 Physical Effects of Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol abuse effects can be far-reaching and devastating. The effects of alcohol abuse not only have consequences for the drinker but those around her or him as well. Alcohol abuse effects can be both psychological and physical. Alcohol consumption causes changes in behavior. The physical effects of alcohol abuse can be experienced with as little as one or two drinks — impaired judgment and coordination needed to operate a car safely may result in the drinker having an accident.

Alcoholism is an illness where alcoholic beverage consumption is at a level that interferes with the person’s health and negatively impacts social, family or occupational responsibilities. Alcohol abusers are drinkers that may drink excessively at various times with resulting immediate alcohol abuse effects at the time of excess alcohol consumption.

The immediate physical effects of alcohol abuse can be experienced as soon as ten minutes after drinking begins. With continued alcohol consumption on that occasion, the immediate effects of alcohol abuse worsen and become more serious.

Here are five of the immediate physical alcohol abuse effects:

1. Inhibitions Become Reduced – at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05, changes in a person’s behavior begins to be noticeable. Alcohol abuse effects and reduced inhibitions can put a person at higher risk for actions they would otherwise not participate in, such as sexual activity, continued drinking or illegal drug use.

2. Loss of Muscle Control – at the level of 0.10, slurred speech will likely be evident. Impaired judgement and poor coordination are physical effects of alcohol abuse that can lead to falls and accidents.

3. Memory Loss and/or Blackouts – since alcohol depresses the brain’s control mechanisms, as blood alcohol levels increase, periods of time and certain situations and events may not be remembered afterward.

4. Stupor – at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.40, a person can hardly function, acting seriously dazed, disoriented and confused.

5. Coma – at a blood alcohol level of 0.50, a person is at risk for coma, which can be life-threatening. And at this level or higher, respiratory paralysis and death become very much a possibility.

Other alcohol abuse effects that are short-term include nausea, hangovers, headaches and fatigue. The longer a person abuses alcohol over time, the higher the chances of other alcohol abuse effects being experienced and alcohol dependency developing. The most severe form of alcoholism is ‘alcohol dependency’. Physical alcohol dependence is characterized by withdrawal symptoms when alcohol consumption is interrupted, by tolerance to the effects of alcohol abuse and by the presence of alcohol-related illnesses.

Malnutrition can develop from a reduced appetite plus inadequate absorption of nutrients in the intestinal tract and from consuming ’empty’ calories in alcohol. Calories from alcohol are called ’empty’ calories since alcohol contains no beneficial nutrients, vitamins or minerals.

And with continued alcohol consumption and abuse over years, many of the body organs will be affected. Alcohol is especially harmful to the liver since the liver does most of the work of breaking down alcohol. Alcohol destroys liver cells, and it destroys the ability of liver cells to regenerate. This condition leads to progressive imflammatory injury to the liver and eventually can result in cirrhosis of the liver.

Additional long term alcohol abuse effects include damage to the brain, high blood pressure, heart muscle damage, nerve damage, pancreatitis, bleeding in the esophagus, erectile dysfunction in men, fetal alcohol syndrome in the offspring of alcoholic women, insomnia, depression and increased cancer risks.

If you or someone you know may have problems with alcohol and you’d like to learn more about alcoholism and perhaps seek help, there are proven resources available. It is never too late to begin recovery from alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse effects.

Giving a Stray Animal a Home

Recently i felt the need in my life for a little more companionship in my life from an animal of some type.

I was then left with the decision, what animal would best suit my personal circumstances and be the best companion for me in my circumstances.

As a person who works full time i decided to opt that a dog was not suitable for me and also the animals welfare so i decided to opt for a cat instead.I was then left at the crossroads in my morals either to buy a cat from a breeder or give a stray or abandoned animal a home.

I decided to opt for a cat from an animal sanctuary which i have never looked back on since. I visited a local animal sanctuary and was shown many different abandoned or stray cats which made me sad in a way as i could only house one animal.

All the staff at the sanctuary were extremely helpful in assisting me in choosing the correct animal for me. I finally made my decision on a lovely tabby white cat which had been abandoned and had been in the home for a year. The animal had been left on a residents doorstep one night in a cardboard box and was handed into the sanctuary when found the next morning.

I was required to fill in some short documents about myself and we arranged a home visit for the home to observe my surrounding and ensure that that the animal would get a loving home.

I had the home visit which only took twenty minutes of my time and i was left the cat so we could start getting to know each other straight away.It was lovely to see the animal accustom itself to my home and get to know me and i would never do without him now.

To anyone wanting a pet i would strongly recommend giving a home to a stray or abandoned animal, read my article on my experience and see for yourself how this could be you in the same circumstances.

Body Language – 10 Tips for Reading People and Interpreting Gestures

Reading people and their body language can give you great insights into their true feeling.

We use our head, arms, hands, shoulders and even legs and feet to make gestures, and emphasize what we are saying, but the majority of gestures are made with the hands and arms. Here are some things to look for, to help you interpret body language and gestures.

1. Nodding or tilting the head to the side shows interest, active listening, and concern.

2. A head held up indicates confidence, but if it is held too high, it can indicate aloofness or a patronizing attitude – looking down your nose at someone.

3. Shrugging the shoulders with a palms-up gesture indicates that the person doesn’t know or care, or is bored or uninterested.

4. People sometimes reveal their real feelings through body language that contradicts their words. For example, if someone says he agrees with you, but his head moves slightly from side to side, he is really signaling disagreement. He may be showing his real feelings, but not want to be bothered arguing with you.

5. Some people pick lint from their clothing. Whether this is conscious or unconscious, it can indicate that they disagree with you, but can’t be bothered to argue.

6. Nervousness often shows in your hands. People who are anxious may rub or wring their hands together, or clasp and unclasp them.

7. When we aren’t comfortable with our hands, we hide them in our pockets or behind our backs. Hands in the pocket convey a hidden agenda or secretiveness.

8. An open palm suggests honest and sincerity. A closed fist can be considered menacing.

9. Hands on the hips can be seen as defiant.

10. The fig leaf position, with your hands clasped together over your crotch, or folded tightly over your chest (the female fig leaf) can make you seem aloof or defensive.

Dietary Supplement Safety: Myths and Facts

There are several common myths about  dietary   supplements . Now, it’s time to reveal the truth.

If you take vitamins nutritional supplements, the people close to you might voice their opinions about which supplements to take, and which not to take. What’s more, they might be so grounded in their beliefs that you begin to doubt what you know to be true about proper supplementation. Though some of the things people say about vitamins are true, many statements could be nothing more than conjecture, with no evidence to back them up. Instead of getting increasingly confused and unsure of what supplements to take, you should use your common sense – and read on to learn the truth behind the most widely-spread supplement myths!

Myth 1:

All calcium supplements produce the same effect, and all calcium gets absorbed into the body.

Fact: This is simply untrue. Not all calcium supplements contain the same amount of calcium. What’s more, there is no guarantee that all the calcium in a supplement will be absorbed into the body. Some factors that influence calcium absorption are presence of vitamin D, lactose, and estrogen, and acidity levels. Excessive fat in one’s diet, a lack of adequate exercise, and too much caffeine, stress, and tension, can all inhibit calcium absorption. For adults, the recommended daily calcium dosage is between 1000 to 1500 mg.

Myth 2:

There is no evidence to support the effectiveness of  dietary   supplements .

Fact: Hundreds and thousands of studies are published every year highlighting the effectiveness of  dietary   supplements . Every month, prestigious universities and research centers publish their studies detailing the benefits of  dietary   supplements  in reputed journals such as The Journal of the American Medical Association, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, The New England Journal of Medicine, and more.

Myth 3:

If vitamins nutritional supplements are natural, they are also safe and effective in any dosage and with any medication.

Fact: This is not necessarily true. Although  dietary   supplements  are arguably beneficial for overall health, certain factors should always be considered before you start to take them regularly. Genetic makeup, metabolism, and current medications could all affect the way your body reacts to supplements. Therefore, it is advisable to consult with a health or medical professional before settling on your supplement regimen.

Myth 4:

People who eat a healthy diet don’t need to take  dietary   supplements .

Fact: The concept of a “healthy diet” varies from person to person. In reality, a healthy diet should be comprised of fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, lean meats, fish, poultry, nuts, seeds and legumes – all in the right quantities. The diet of vegetarians is mostly comprised of vegetables and fruits, while that of non-vegetarians includes more meat and fish. Neither is fully balanced. Therefore, depending on diet alone may not be enough to ensure adequate vitamin intake.

Myth 5:

No natural treatment can take the place of pharmaceutical medicine.

Fact: In reality, each has its plusses and minuses. The best thing to do is to evaluate all your treatment options before making a decision. In many cases, people have fully recovered from their health conditions by using only natural supplements.

In the end, there’s a lot of evidence that vitamins nutritional supplements can go a long way toward ensuring optimal health and well-being. Although there are many myths regarding nutritional supplements, don’t let them stop you from finding out the truth – and from living a healthier life.

Features of a Good Dental Clinic

A good dental clinic should be able to offer the very best help to all patients. Many people do not have regular visits to the dentist and it is therefore a bit hard for them to know all the quality attributes of a good clinic. One should only go for a clinic that delivers only the very best. Here are a few pointers that would go a long way in helping anyone know the best dental clinic.

Having a friendly atmosphere

A clinic with a friendly atmosphere is a very good pain reliever to anyone who is having a dental problem. No one likes to be around a grump. The dental clinic’s staff members should be good in imparting the required friendliness and courtesy to all patients who visit the clinic.

Having the latest facilities

A good clinic should be well equipped with the latest machines and equipment. For instance, it should have all the required equipment such that if a patient goes for treatment, he/she gets the complete package at the same place instead of having to rush to different places. Having all the right equipment at the same place goes a long way in letting the patients have trust in the clinic.

Having qualified dentists

A good clinic should have the most qualified dentists in all the dental specialties. The dentists should be well trained and qualified with a wealth of experience. They should also be undergoing the most recent studies in the latest techniques to ensure that they are able to handle any case. Dentistry is a career that keeps on changing on the way operations and procedures are done and it is therefore necessary for every dentist to be well updated on the most recent ones.

Promptness with attending to patients

This is also another very important thing that every patient good dental clinic should have. In most cases, dental patients go to the clinic when in a lot of pain and it is therefore important that they are attended in the most professional manner and in the shortest duration of time possible.

Providing professional gentle treatment

Many people loathe going to the dentist because of the misconception that all dentists are rough in handling clients and especially when treating. While it might be true to some extent, it does not necessarily mean that all dentists are like that. Before choosing any dental clinic for treatment, it is important to first of all ensure that the dentist is qualified and that he/she has a history of handling patients gently.

All said and done, many dental clinics possess all the above features. This is because the modern dentists have been very concerned when matters related to changing the face of the profession are concerned. They work diligently and in the most professional manner to ensure that the patients get the very best. On the other hand, the patients benefit as a result of the dentists’ hard work and dedication.

Blood Tests for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease: an Introduction

Blood tests for colitis and Crohn’s disease are a relatively new and exciting development that have added significantly to the screening, diagnosis and management of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Differentiating the two may allow better predictions regarding responses to medical treatments, decisions regarding surgery options and the risks of various complications. Antibodies to various proteins including Baker’s or Brewer’s yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae) and bacteria like Escherichia. coli (E. coli) are present in the blood of many people with Crohn’s disease but rarely in normal people. Antibodies to a normal cell component, a nuclear protein, is present in most people with ulcerative colitis, a few people with Crohn’s whose colitis behaves more like ulcerative colitis than Crohn’s, and rarely in normal people.

Antibody tests or serologic markers are blood tests looking for markers of diseases. The serologic markers or antibody tests for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are pANCA and ASCA, OmpC, and CBir1 Flagelin respectively. The latter three blood tests for Crohn’s are only available through one laboratory, Prometheus Laboratories, Inc.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of unknown cause that only involves the colon. It affects the superficial lining of the colon and rarely causes bowel obstruction (blockage) or perforation (rupture) but frequently causes severe bloody diarrhea, blood in the stool, weight loss, abdominal pain, as well as joint aches or arthritis, skin rashes, eye irritation and occasionally a severe liver disorder known as primary sclerosing cholangitis that can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Ulcerative colitis can be cured by complete removal of the colon but not Crohn’s disease.

Crohn’s disease can also cause colitis but usually also affects the very end of the small intestine called the ileum (ileitis or regional enteritis). When Crohn’s affects only the colon it may be difficult to distinguish it from ulcerative colitis though Crohn’s tends to affect the colon in a patchy manner whereas ulcerative colitis is continuous. Crohn’s can affect the gastrointestinal tract anywhere from the mouth to the anus and is not curable by removing the colon. It is also frequently associated with bowel strictures (constrictions) causing obstruction that may require surgery. It also may be associated with fistula that are abnormal connections of the intestine to other organs and the skin or it can result in abscesses or perforation requiring surgery It is important to distinguish Crohn’s disease from ulcerative colitis since medical treatments and surgical approaches may differ and the types of complications that can occur can be much different.

Traditionally, the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease is highly accurate by the appearance of the colon on colonoscopy or x-rays that confirm the presence or absence of involvement of other parts of the intestinal tract. Diagnosis is confirmed by a typical pattern of inflammation of the intestine lining as seen under the microscope on tissue obtained by biopsy during colonoscopy. However, before blood tests were available about 10% of people with IBD were diagnosed as having an indeterminate colitis because the biopsies could not distinguish between the ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

The blood tests currently available are pANCA, anti-ASCA, anti-OmpC, and anti-CBir1 flagelin antibodies. pANCA is the peripheral anti-nuclear antibody. It is an abnormal antibody to nuclear protein of cells and is highly sensitive and specific for ulcerative colitis. The pANCA anbibody has been further divided into subsets by Prometheus Laboratories Inc. Neutrophil-specific pANCA ELISA (NSNA) is positive in the majority of people with ulcerative colitis (UC) and a small subset of people with Crohn’s disease that have disease characteristics more like UC. Immunofluorescent cellular staining of neutrophils (NSNA IFA) and enzyme Dnase testing (NSNA DNase sensitivity) is also done as part of the Prometheus IBD Serology 7. The latter test when present in high levels is significantly associated with development of inflammation of the rectal pouch (pouchitis) created when someone has their entire colon removed for ulcerative colitis that does not respond to medical treatment.

ASCA is anti-saccharomyces cerevisiae antibody. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is Brewer’s or Baker’s yeast. Crohn’s patients have a high prevalence of abnormal antibodies to this yeast. Some have suggested that another yeast, Candida albicans, somehow plays a role in this abnormal response. A few people with celiac disease have this antibody present in their blood in the absence of signs of Crohn’s disease. OmpC is the abbreviation for an antibody that develops in many Crohn’s patients to the outer membrane porin protein of the bacteria E. coli though that bacteria is not thought to be the cause of Crohn’s disease. Just recently Prometheus Laboratories added antibody testing for a specific protein on bacteria that constitutes the flagelin or hair like structure on certain bacteria enabling movement and attachment of bacteria in the intestine called CBir1 flagelin.

Future blood tests may include antibodies against certain sugar (mannose) residues in the cell wall of the yeast saccharomyces cerevisiae. Anti-laminaribioside and anti-chitobioside antibodies were recently reported to be present in Crohn’s patients who were anti-ASCA negative possibly further strengthening the ability to distinguish them from people with ulcerative colitis. This is also interesting because of suspicions and the lay public interest in the role of sugars or glycans and yeast in IBD. In particular the reports in lay literature of success of carbohydrate specific diet in IBD.

If you have a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease these blood tests may be very helpful in your treatment. If you have unexplained abdominal pain, diarrhea, or blood in your stools then these tests should be considered. If you have a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, these tests may exclude ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Since as many as 10% of people with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease may also have celiac disease, celiac blood tests should also be considered. Lactose intolerance is also common in IBD, IBS and celiac disease.

Future helpful information on colitis, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, food allergies, food intolerance, food sensitivity, eosinophilic esophagitis and irritable bowel syndrome will be available from Dr. Scot Lewey, the food allergy expert-the food doc at http://www.thefooddoc.com. Achieving Optimum Health

“Optimum health is not just the absence of disease but the presence of wellness in mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social areas. Some would also include financial health.”

Introduction

Optimum health is essential at all levels, from the individual to the society we live in to the environment around us. We have to start thinking of wealth not just in terms of possession of money and properties but also the possession of mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being.

Mental Health

The truth is mind is the forerunner of all states.

With a proper mindset, a poor man can still be happy. Conversely, if the mindset is not right, no matter how much material possessions you may have, you may still be a very unhappy person. Thus, Gandhi said, “The world has enough for everyone’s needs, but not enough for even a single person’s greed.”

So a healthy mind is one that possesses a mindset that can lead to happiness and contentment with self and the world around us. It provides clarity of thoughts, good insight and the ability to see things through an unbiased mind.

To be able to see things through an unbiased mind is no small feat. It is extremely difficult to note or observe the unfolding of events and phenomena without judging. We habitually associate emotions or feelings to events, and allow such emotions to direct our actions. Our likes for certain things and dislikes for others are closely associated with our emotions.

Emotional Health

It is our emotions that lead us to act impulsively at times. Thus a high level of self-awareness in this area is extremely useful. In fact, it is essential to our well-being. After all, things and relationships that may take us years to build can be destroyed in a moment of anger.

There are positive and negative emotions. Positive emotions such as love, compassion and joy should be cultivated, while negative emotions such as fear, anger and hate need to be eradicated.

When asked about this, a wise sage of India once illustrated with a story:

An old man said to his grandson, “Boy, I have two tigers caged within me. One is love and compassion. The other is fear and anger.”

The young boy asked, “Which one will win, grandfather?”

The old man replied, “The one I feed.”

At times, it may seem that we have no control over our emotions. This is not true. The truth is how well we manage our emotions depends on how aware we are of our emotions, particularly on the arising of our emotions. The earlier we are able to note the arising of our emotions, we better we can manage them.

More and more researches are showing that our well-being is closely linked to our emotional and mental health. Our body’s immune system is generally enhanced by positive mental outlook and emotion. Conversely, it is depressed by negative mental and emotional states. Thus, stress, worry, anger and fear are some states that may lead to physical illnesses such as hypertension, cardiac diseases, peptic ulcers, depression and a host of other ailments.

Physical Health

To maintain an optimum physical well-being, therefore, requires us to focus not only on our body but also our mind and emotions.

On a physical level, our body can be kept healthy through adequate sleep and rest, proper nutrition, regular exercises and a healthy environment that is free from pollution.

Spiritual Health

Throughout the ages, wise men have consistently informed and taught us that we are essentially spiritual beings.

Although medical science has not been able to reveal to us our spiritual nature, there are many indirect evidence that we would be foolish to ignore. Stories from people who had gone through a near death experience (NDE), or dying people with heightened nearing death awareness, or simply a cure from an ‘incurable’ disease all suggest that there is more to life than just the physical state.

Major religions of the world all based their teachings on the belief that we are essentially spiritual beings. According to these teachings, our physical existence is secondary.

While it may be true that we should focus our life more on our spiritual nature than our physical nature, it would be difficult for the majority of people to do so, at least not immediately. Things cannot change overnight. Mindset, however, can, and that is perhaps the best place to start.

Financial Health

However, on a more mundane level, most people are still stuck on how to survive from day to day, where to get the next cheque to pay for the house installment, so on and so forth.

Practically, therefore, we need to look into ways to achieve a financial state that would theoretically free us from the constrain of ‘forced’ work. This is where the concept of financial freedom is so attractive. According to this concept, one should strive for a state where we have one or more than one source of income that can be generated passively, that is, even when we don’t work.

This is what Robert Kiyosaki termed as ‘passive income’.

According to him, passive income can only be achieved by becoming an investor or a business owner, not a sole proprietor or an employee. To become an investor or a business owner, you must spend the time and money to acquire financial intelligence. Unlike IQ or EQ, you can acquire financial intelligence through self education.

To get a financial health check-up, consult an accountant, a banker or a financial planner you can trust.

Healthy Relationship

“No man is an island, entire by itself.”

As a medical doctor, I am in a unique position to confront and comfort dying patients. One of the most important thing that I have observed is that dying people do not ask about their money or possessions. Instead, they focus their remaining energy and strength on trying to heal wounded relationships. It is as though there is an inherent need to get a proper closure to a relationship.

Thus, forming and cultivating a healthy relationship is important for our well-being. Unfortunately, this is something we often ignored until it is too late. If there is any forgiving to be done, or the need to be forgiven, leaving things to the last minutes may end up with an unfulfilled desire for a closure.

Knowing this now, shouldn’t we spend more time and effort in improving our relationship with our loved ones, especially with our parents, spouse, children and siblings?

Cold Sore Treatment – Lemon Balm Ice

A good cold sore  treatment  can really be a blessed relief for cold sore victims like you and me.

And, if you’re like me, you want a cold sore  treatment  that will not only give you a lot of comfort right now, but will hopefully shorten the healing time so you can get on with your life. That’s the beauty of this well proven cold sore  treatment .

I’m always searching for a better cold sore  treatment . I have many good friends at Mayo who I’ve partnered with for research purposes over the past 33 years. But it’s important to keep in mind that the following cold sore  treatment  methods are not presented as medical advice – only as information for your consideration. There is no substitute for a one-on-one relationship with a medical professional.

By far, the most popular cold sore  treatment  is the application of ice. It slows down metabolism, numbs the area, discourages the virus from replicating, and is readily available. Apply ice for 10 minutes at a time to your cold sores, maybe 3 times an hour, as a very basic cold sore  treatment .

With this cold sore  treatment , if I could catch the cold sores at the first tingle and apply the ice, it delayed – and sometimes prevented – the cold sores from actually moving into the blister stage. If a blister does form, this cold sore  treatment  still works great for providing blessed comfort. Because it does slow down metabolism, it also will slow down the healing of your cold sores. Best not to use it as much during the healing phase of your cold sores as a cold sore  treatment .

A fishing buddy of mine – a Mayo doctor – while on an outing on the Mississippi, revealed his secret cold sore  treatment .

His cold sore  treatment  involves the use of lemon balm tea.

These tea bags can be found for cheap anywhere you find specialty teas. If the lemon balm is not “stand alone” but in a blend with other herbs, that will usually be just fine too – as long as lemon balm is the primary.

Dr. W. explained that he discovered lemon balm herb has anti-viral properties and is a natural cold sore  treatment . He took a 16 – 20 ounce container of bottled water. He then brewed a strong batch of lemon balm tea using one tea bag per 4 ounces – then froze the tea bags – using these in place of the plain ice cold sore  treatment .

You get the comforting effect of ice plus, as the tea-bag melts, the application of the anti-viral properties of lemon balm. He stored the tea back in the original bottles for convenience and further cold sore  treatment .

Additionally, Dr. W. – to supercharge this cold sore  treatment  – would sip the lemon balm tea and apply the tea liquid to the cold sores with a cotton ball between lemon balm ice sessions.

If you’re the rare person who gets cold sores inside the mouth, you’ll find they are very difficult to deal with. This may be exactly the cold sore  treatment  for you. Use the lemon balm tea as a mouthwash, then swallow for an additional boost. Listerine has worked well as a cold sore  treatment , both in the mouth and applied externally, but it stings like crazy.

I also found that freezing the tea and sucking on the lemon balm ice chips is very effective and comforting as an in-the-mouth cold sore  treatment .

I tried his cold sore  treatment  and it worked great for my family too, back when we used to get cold sores frequently. Quite a vast improvement on the old ice method.

This cold sore  treatment , using lemon balm frozen tea bags, is a much better choice than plain ice during the healing stages of your cold sores. Although you are slowing metabolism, you are also killing many viruses with this cold sore  treatment .

There are many other reported highly effective cold sore  treatment  methods that you can try. These include tea tree oil, dmso, olive leaf oil, lysine, zinc, yogurt, aloe vera and more. Lysine and zinc do not work well applied directly because the size of their molecules are too large for effective absorption. Lysine and zinc are better used as internal support supplements.

We have tested every over-the-counter cold sore  treatment  – at least all that we could find. We found they are great for comfort but none of them did anything to actually kill the virus or speed healing.

Keep in mind that the best and most effective cold sore  treatment  will be topical – directly applied – for any open surface lesion like a cold sore.

I hope you, too, will find this to be an excellent, cheap, and useful cold sore  treatment .

FDA Orders Search Engines to Stop Online Pharmacies

How Does Online Pharmacies Affect Pharmacy Leaders?

With cheaper drugs made available online, big pharmacy companies are losing control of their monopolistic control over the pharmacy industry. They are not able to compete with these online pharmacies with their exorbitant drug prices. FDA moves in and tries to protect these companies from online pharmacies by trying to censor online information from users. What FDA does not know about the internet is: nobody controls internet and the spread of information over the web. Even major search engines like Google have no control over the use of information on the web. Google protects and encourages free speech on the web and that is why searching online for products is so good- you can find anything online these days. If major pharmaceutical leaders cannot compete with online pharmacies’ prices, they should look to resolving the situation themselves, not use FDA or use political pressures. What good is the internet if certain products are censored?

How Good Can It Get?

Buying medicine online is the way of the future. They do away the need for extensive pharmaceutical company structures and hundreds of drug salesmen stalking hospitals and clinics every day. When comparing online pharmacies and pharmaceutical leaders, it is similar to comparing Toyota and BMW. Online pharmacies work just like Toyota- cheap and more effective. They are safer and better than BMW in many ways while BMW represents the prestige of owning a continental car.

Clearly, we should present cheaper drug alternatives via online pharmacies to internet users as well as brand name drugs. So far, US pharmaceutical industry is infested with drug lords and BMWs, but why can’t there be more online pharmacies and Toyotas?
