Broken Leg

Your leg contains 4 bones (the femur, the patella, the tibia, and the fibula) and bends at the hip, the knee, and the ankle. It takes a lot of force to break a bone in the leg. The bone will break if the amount of force put on the bone is greater than it can handle.

A car, motorcycle accident and skiing injury are some of the accidents that can cause a leg to break. Injury can also cause a bone to break if it has been weakened by a disease such as cancer, bone cysts, or osteoporosis.

At times if a leg is overused as in distance running, it can cause a stress fracture.

• For fractures in the middle part of the thigh or shinbone, a metal rod sometimes is placed down through the center of the bone.

Hip Fractures in the Elderly

Hip fractures are quite common in people who are over 65 years of age, although it can happen at any stage of life. The biggest risk factor for hip fracture is the old age. Loss of bone density is the main reason for fractures. The bones become weak and fragile and, therefore, are prone to fracture.

There are 3 types of hip fracture, namely femoral head, femoral neck and intertrochanteric fracture.

Elderly people are more prone to getting a hip fracture because essential minerals in the bones are gradually lost, making the bones weak and more susceptible to breaks and cracks. Women are at higher risk compared to men due to menopause. Menopause is associated with considerable drop in the level of estrogen hormone. Children suffering from the cerebral palsy condition have a number of neurological disorders that will affect the coordination of muscles. Though the condition cannot get worse over time, it affects the child all his life. Children suffer from problems in movement, balance and posture. In addition, the disorder makes it tough to eat. This means that children don’t get enough nutrients for the body which makes them weak. When such difficulties arise, the caregivers will have to take necessary action by helping them to meet their nutritional requirements.

Children with cerebral palsy have difficulties in muscle movement which makes it hard for them to eat and does not give them enough nutrition. To assess the problem, up to five professionals might be needed which includes a dietitian, physiotherapist, nutritionist, caregiver and a primary physician.

If a child is not able to take in about 80% of the required calories by mouth or is suffering weight loss, then it is a signal that he should be treated with tube feeding. Botox Versus Invasive Aesthetic Surgery

Botox has become so popular that it is not necessary to insist on using this wonderful tool for correcting the signs of aging. Its name comes from “botulinum toxina” which in its normal concentration is a poison, but which has been used for the past 25 years in neurology at a dosage of up to 200 times less than its normal concentration in non-invasive aesthetic surgery and aesthetic medicine.

Botulinum toxin brings about muscular   paralysis , blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the neuromuscular junctions inside a structure known as a synapse. This localised  paralysis  does not spread into the body, and the nervous system forms new nerve sprouts within a few months. This means the effects of botulinum toxin are temporary.

The main applications are the  paralysis , or rather the relaxing, of certain facial muscles used when gesturing, such as the forehead muscle which causes the forehead to wrinkle when it contracts, the orbicular muscle, which produces crow’s feet, the corrugator and procerus muscles that cause wrinkles in the glabella, or the space between the eyebrows.

There are other applications, using the  paralysis  of the microfibres of the muscles to relax and improve the wrinkles on the upper and lower lips (commonly referred to as bar code lines), and also the platysma bands (cords that appear when the neck muscles contract and that remain as age progresses).

It is important to know that botulinum toxin has its successes, its failures and its limitations. It has great results for a limited period of time, but after reaching a certain age, passing on to surgery to correct the loss of elasticity in the skin is often the necessary next step.

While it is true that it relaxes the muscles of gestural expression of the upper part of the face, it is also true that the face is left looking smoother, but without being able to move. Furthermore, depending on which injection technique is employed, you can raise the tail of the eyebrows, but the lift cannot be controlled 100% and should be done by an experienced specialist.

Also, if the botulinum toxin is injected too close to the eyes, it can completely prevent the eyebrows being raised, giving the sensation of heavy and drooping eyes. Types of Kidney Disease

Our kidneys are very important to us. Without actively functioning kidneys, the presence of kidney disease can be devastating for a person. In the worst case scenario, an individual will need to be on dialysis or receive a kidney transplant to replace the diseased kidneys.

There are several different types of kidney disease, some of which are worse than others. Kidney disease can be “acute”, meaning it is of a fast onset or “chronic” meaning the decline in kidney function is slow. Both kinds of kidney disease can be due to autoimmune disorders, toxins, medications or infections. Diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure can gradually worsen the function of the kidneys.

Another classification of kidney disease occurs when the kidneys leak out certain body fluids or substances. One of these diseases is hematuria or blood in the urine. This can come from sickened kidneys that leak out blood cells from the capillaries in the kidneys. The other is fairly common and is called proteinuria. Proteinuria is when protein, mostly albumin, leaks out from the body. This can become so great that there is not enough protein in the blood of the rest of the body. We need our protein to keep the fluid in the blood vessels and without it, fluid leaks out into the tissues all over the body. This condition is known as “nephrotic syndrome”.

The presence of kidney stones is another kidney disease. This can occur when a person secretes too much calcium oxalate into the urine and doesn’t drink enough water. Uric acid can cause kidney stones as well. The calcium oxalate or the uric acid builds up in the urinary area of the kidneys and precipitates into a stone that, if passed, becomes very painful. Kidney stones do not fit well in the ureters and they get stuck, causing a back of urine and extreme pain. Infections can occur with kidney stones as well.

Hypertension can cause kidney disease or, in some cases, the medications that treat hypertension (high blood pressure) can cause kidney problems. In some cases, a person has a blockage of one or both arteries leading to the kidneys. The kidneys respond by releasing vasopressin which causes the blood pressure to rise remarkably. There are specific blood pressure medications that address this problem. In some cases, surgery to correct the blockage may need to be done.

Chronic pyelonephritis is another kidney disease. This is a condition where infection seeds into the kidneys (one or both) and causes chronic pain and inflammation in the kidneys. Hematuria can result from this type of kidney infection.

There is one primary kidney disease which is cancerous. Renal cell carcinoma is a type of kidney disease that can occur spontaneously. The cancer can cause pain or bleeding in the area of the kidneys. A CT scan of the abdomen can detect this form of kidney disease. Often, if the cancer doesn’t extend beyond the outer capsule of the kidney, the kidney can be removed and the cancer is highly treatable.

Kidney disease can be hereditary. There are a number of rare hereditary kidney diseases that result in leakage of blood or protein from the kidneys. These diseases can sometimes be managed medically but, in other cases, dialysis or kidney transplant are necessary to cure the underlying problem.

Her Most Famous Painting (The Roots) – Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo, born on July 6, 1907, was an incredibly strong woman and an internationally recognized Mexican painter. She was married to a Mexican painter Diego Rivera, whose artistry she admired. Her work used to carry a competent blend of the Mexican and European cultures. Most of her paintings were self-portraits (55 out of 143), mostly remarkably portraying her pain and sexuality. Kahlo’s “The Roots” is one of her most magnificent works.

In her short span of life, Frida endured what most people cannot even imagine. When she was 19, she met with an accident, with a trolley car. She broke her spinal column, collarbone, ribs, pelvis, eleven fractures in her right leg, the right foot crushed & dislocated, and a shoulder also got dislocated. She had as many as 35 operations, owing to this accident. To give vent to all her trauma, she transformed her sufferings, on the canvas, as self-portraits, especially “The Roots.” To justify her obsession with self-portraits, she once said, “I paint self-portraits because I am the person I know best. I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other considerations.”

“The Roots,” painted in 1943, as mentioned above, was one of her most beautiful and identifying self-portraits. She painted it to mark her reunion with her estranged husband, Diego Rivera, after an undesirable phase of pain and suffering. The painting, in the background of happiness, also displays her feelings about her ‘developed’ physical inabilities in life. Frida had lost her reproductive ability in the accident and carried that incompleteness and pain in her heart. This 12″ X 19.5″ oil on metal work canvassed Frida’s desire to be a part of feminine genesis and to be connected to life like others. It displays her desire of having her own children. Frida Kahlo adored Pedregal’s rough grey rocks in South Mexico and she set them in the backdrop of her painting. The detailed, leafless stems around Frida, in the painting, portray her ‘deliberate’ infertility, her severely injured body, her lost loves, and the other misses of her life.

Sotheby’s auctioned “The Roots” at a record price of $5,616,000, the highest price a Latin Mexican artist ever commanded. Her other popular paintings were, “The Two Fridas,” painted to mark her divorce with Diego, “Tree of Hope,” and “My Nurse and I.” Kahlo’s artistic ability was amazing. She imbibed inspirations from different people, cultures, and her surroundings, blending their essence in her customized, fresh, and distinct style. She competently canvassed not only her physical trauma, but also the life-long psychological one, translating into numerous unexplored ideas and emotions. Frida did not paint dream or fantasies, but her own reality. She truly said, ‘I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy as long as I can paint.” The tower of strength, Frida died of her pain on July13, 1954.

2006-2010 Koenigsegg CCX Overview

At the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, Koenigsegg unveiled the CCX model. In celebration of 10 years since the first Koenigsegg CC vehicle completed a test drive in 1996, the CCX stands for the Competition Coupe X, where the X represents the roman numeral for ten. The CCX would be the first Koenigsegg car to comply with global regulations to allow for its entry into the US market. As a successor to the CCR, the CCX would now carry the Koenigsegg brand from Sweden and Europe to the world between 2006 and 2010.

Although the fundamentals remain unchanged from the CC8S and the CCR, the newer CCX features a significant amount of tweaks and enhancements that allow it to comply with other safety regulations while also improving performance from predecessor vehicles. The CCX still features a 4.7 liter twin-supercharged V8, carbon-fiber kevlar monocoque body, and Koenigsegg-only “dihedral synchro-helix” actuation doors, which make your Civic’s aftermarket Lamborghini doors cry.

Compliance to US market regulations forced Koenigsegg to focus on changing two primary aspects: engine and dimensions. Engine changes are necessary to comply to emission standards (darn you Californians!) and dimension standards are used to ensure passenger safety.

As a result, the CCX is 3.46 inches longer than the CCR, allowing Koenigsegg to satisfy rear impact regulations. The CCX is 1.6 inches taller than the CCR. Combined with new sports seats and some carbon fiber panel adjustments, headroom has been increased by 2 inches, which means that you can now spike your hair while driving. The slightly larger car weighs a whooping 100 kg (220 lbs) more than the outgoing CCR model, putting the dry curb weight of the CCX at 1,280kg (2,822 lbs). Gaining 220 lbs just to make it US-road legal might not some like a worthwhile compromise but the total weight of the Koenigsegg CCX weighs less than the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, a purpose built and stripped Gallardo, which comes in at 1,340 kg (2,954 lbs). That means that Rosie O’donnell can drive a CCX and still weigh less than a Lamborghini!

The engine design, originally a Ford Modular engine for the CC8S and CCR, was replaced with a Koenigsegg design that was made to run on 91-octane fuel, the most common fuel available in the US. Koenigsegg thoroughly re-engineered the engine and decided to assemble the entire engine at their own factory. The engine block is cast for them by Grainger & Worral, a British company that specializes in Formula One components. The new engine is cast out of aluminum alloy which is stronger than the previous engine, allowing for a thinner and lighter engine block. The new engine is still a V8 that displaces 4.7 liters while being boosted by two centrifugal superchargers. The total output for the CCX is 806 horsepower at 6,900 RPM and 678 lb-ft of torque at 5700 RPM. The power barely changed from the predecessor CCR, but considering the newly employed block and original engineering, achieving similar performance results as the Ford engine is quite impressive. 0-60 mph is achieved in a quick 3.2 seconds and top speeds can exceed 245 mph although no official claims have topped the predecessor CCR’s 240 mph record.

Koenigsegg drivers will be able to hit these impressive performance numbers by putting the power to the ground via a custom 6-speed manual transmission and bringing it all to a stop with huge custom 14.3 inch cast iron disc brakes that can also be upgraded to 15 inch carbon ceramic brakes.

Koenigsegg produced the CCX from 2006 to 2010 where the CCX would be replaced by the Agera. Only 34 are known to exist in the world, but there are certainly a few alternatives; with a CCXR variant which ran on biofuel that actually produced a significant amount of additional power and an “Edition” model which is a “track ready” version of the CCX.

At a hefty sales price of approximately $560,000 USD the CCX is certainly a car to be reckoned with in the states. After only 10 years of development the Koenigsegg brand is already bringing Ferraris to their knees and scaring the likes of Top Gear host, Jeremy Clarkson, so much that he considers “getting stabbed” more comfortable than driving a CCX. Bottom line, the Koenigsegg CCX is a purpose built car intended to grab you by the throat and drive you to your knees begging for mercy.

 Migraine  Ocular, otherwise known as Ophthalmic (Eye)  migraine , is a common yet maybe painless type of  migraine  known to man. Generally, a person may experience visual problems such as scotoma or a small blind spot, which may or may not be accompanied with a headache pain, and can be diagnosed as having an ocular  migraine  episode.

Other visual symptoms of  migraine  ocular are related to the scotoma. Some may have scintillations or flickering lights around the scotoma while others may have metamorphopsia or a zigzag line inside the blind spot. While some individuals would feel the throbbing pain on one side of their head during or at the onset of ocular  migraine , others may not. However, even if the person with  migraine  ocular does not experience headaches, that person is not exempted from the typical reason behind  migraine  attacks. The inflammation in the nerves and blood vessels that surround the brain changes the blood flow which contributes to the visual symptoms of  migraine  ocular.

Ocular  migraine  attack may last some few minutes to as long as 30 minutes. Even though the visual images that a person sees during  migraine  attack can be quite alarming, there is no permanent damage to the eye.
