What Is the Most Effective Treatment for Cold Sores?

Most people throw their hard earned money away buying prescription medication that they think is their best option. Sure if they follow the directions and catch it in time then they might have a good chance of stopping the outbreak. But it is not the best method, first of all drugs are expensive and your body get accustomed to the medication and adapts, thus making it less potent and reliable. At first the virus is overwhelmed by the medication and is easily defeated, but after a few doses it adapts making the prescription less and less effective.

The most effective treatment for cold sores is a natural remedy. First of all natural methods are very inexpensive and easy to apply. You can find many of the products at your local grocery store. Eating foods low in arginine and high in lysine is a great method to prevent an outbreak and keep the herpes virus dormant. Your best option is to prevent an outbreak for happening in the first place, you can do this by eating the right foods and getting enough rest to assure your immune system is functioning at the highest level. A strong immune system is the key to preventing outbreaks and stopping one in it’s tracks. When your immune systems is strong it creates anti bodies against the herpes virus, forcing it to stay dormant. Stay away from the triggers like junk food, alcohol, and make sure you perform at least 1 hour of strenuous activity a day with plenty of sleep. If you are out of shape your immune system weaker therefore you are more susceptible to cold sore outbreaks. Stay away from fatty, processed foods and food high in sugars. They do nothing for you but turn into fat. Stress is a huge trigger for an outbreak, it weakens the immune systems and causes the virus to flourish. Try using anti stress techniques such as avoiding procrastination and learning to let things go by relaxing with deep breaths when you feel stressed out.

In order to effectively treat your cold sores you must eat healthy and be physically fit. Stay within your calorie range and eat foods high in protein and lysine. Chicken, beans and fish are all healthy choices that can be inexpensive and easy to eat. Remember that the most effective treatment for cold sores is a healthy lifestyle, and a clear stress free body and soul.

Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis – A Deadly Attack

Sometimes, for a person with chronic  bronchitis , the symptoms will quickly get worse all of a sudden. This is known as an acute exacerbation of chronic  bronchitis , or AECB. Many people that die from chronic  bronchitis  does so during an episode of acute exacerbation of chronic  bronchitis , so a person having an attack of AECB must get medical attention right away to maximize his/her chances of survival.

What Happens During AECB?

During an AECB, the already narrower-than-normal air passageways in the lungs become even narrower, and even more and thicker mucous is secreted. This will cause breathing to become even more difficult. This may be accompanied by a fever, chills, and feeling weak in the knees. If the sudden acute exacerbation is due to bacterial infection, the mucus coughed up during expectoration may be speckled with blood, or colored a brighter than normal yellow or green. If the individual is suffering from fever, and has discovered blood in their mucus, there is a good chance the doctor will take a chest x-ray to make sure that pneumonia is not the underlying cause of the symptoms.

What Triggers AECB?

Acute exacerbations of chronic  bronchitis  are commonly triggered by one or more of the following:

-Bacterial or viral infections (e.g. cold, flu)

-Air pollutants that irritate the lungs (e.g. smoke, fumes, dust)

-Weather changes

To avoid AECB, a chronic bronchitic is advised to stay away from places with heavy air pollution, to get flu and pneumonia shots, and to maintain a healthy diet to strengthen the immune system against infections.

If you are experiencing AECB, you should seek medical treatment immediately. AECB has been known to cause other problems, and many are admitted to the hospital every year for complications from AECB. If you are experiencing this, remember not to panic. Keep your breathing as steady as possible, and calmly call a doctor of physician for advice. Because AECB can come suddenly without warning, it is always best to keep any doctor prescribed inhalants on you just in case. Make sure to check with your doctor, and make sure that these inhalers are fine to take when you are experiencing AECB, to avoid any further complications. Try lying down with a humidifier running, or hopping in a warm shower to help you breath and reduce the symptoms of AECB.

Knee Pain – Most Common Causes

The knee is one of the body’s many joints and often the target of injury and disease that can lead to pain. While every time that a knee becomes painful doesn’t necessarily require a trip to a knee specialist for relief, some conditions are serious enough to require professional diagnosis and treatment or even surgery. One of the most common injuries that bring people to a knee specialist is a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This injury is often experienced by athletes who participate in sports that require them to jump and turn quickly such as basketball.

Arthritis is the disease that contributes to more people’s knee pain than any other. It occurs when the cartilage that is inside the knee to add cushioning to the joint becomes worn over time. These two causes of knee pain alone are a large portion of the approximately 1/3 of all visits to the orthopedic doctor but there are several others that can cause mild to severe pain in the knee including:

• Injuries to the knee can result in the breaking off of small chips of bone that remain in the knee-joint. Even tiny pieces of bone can result in immobilizing the joint and causing pain and swelling.

• Bursa are sacs of fluid within the joints that add cushioning to the joint. When they become inflamed from overuse or striking the area or when other conditions exist, bursitis can result. Like arthritis, bursitis can cause swelling and pain.

• The inflammation of the iliotibial band that runs from the hip to the shin can become irritated and causes swelling and pain that is known as iliotibial band syndrome.

• When the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shin is overused, it may become irritated, leading to a condition marked by intermittent pain, the condition is known as Osgood-Schlatter disease. The large majority of individuals who must see a knee specialist for this condition are teens from 13 to 14 years of age.

• Tendons, the strong bands of tissue that connect muscles and bones, can become inflamed and painful when overused. This condition is known as tendonitis.

• Most often caused as the result of a defect in an individual’s leg and not from physical injury, the kneecap can slide out of its normal position, causing it to swell and cause pain from a partially dislocated kneecap. This condition often occurs in girls in their teens.

• The fold of tissue in the joint of the knee known as the iliotibial band can become irritated from different causes, resulting in the inflammation and pain of medial plica syndrome.

A knee specialist is an orthopedic doctor who is trained to treat the musculoskeletal system of the entire body but who has special training in treating injuries and diseases of the knee. Any injury or disease that results in inflammation and/or pain of the knee that is severe or continues or worsens over time should be evaluated by a knee specialist who can provide you with the treatment options to give you pain relief and improve your ability to move the joint more effectively.

How To Do Weighted Chin Ups

Doing weighted chin ups is usually done in one of three ways. The first involves using the lower body to apply weight while pulling the body up to the bar. The second utilizes a dip belt and the third suspends a dumbbell in between the ankles while hoisting the body.

Normally, one would keep the body straight and rigid during chin ups. This is a requirement for people who are just starting to do the exercise and people who do not have enough muscular strength. The reason behind the restriction is that when the lower body is bent upwards, the tension in the region of the buttocks and knees can increase the weight of the body beyond safe limits for the strength of the person training himself.

The usual way to use the body to perform weighted chin ups is to bend the knees prior to hoisting the body up the bar. This builds tension in the arm and shoulders and provides protection against spraining and   dislocation . Then as the body moves upwards, the buttocks are also bent by swinging the upper legs forward until they are parallel to the ground. When the body is lowered, the buttocks slowly unbend by bringing the upper legs straight down. The knees, however are kept bent throughout the session.

A dip belt is a wide band of leather or some other durable material. At both of its ends, a chain is usually attached. On that chain it is possible to add or remove weights and adjust the downward force during chin ups. The band of the belt is wrapped over the buttock region of the body and fastened loosely in front to keep the belt from falling off. The chain and suspended weights are allowed to hang down in front.

At the start of the routine, the lower legs are bent backward while the upper leg remains vertically oriented. The lower legs are kept in that position as the body is pulled up and brought down until the exercise is done.

When doing weighted chin ups in this way, it is better for the person training to have an assistant. The role of his helper will be to place the barbell shaft in between his ankles prior to lift off. There should also be some allowance below to keep the barbell from going horizontal when the body goes down. The routing is done in the usual way chin ups are performed, with the body held straight and still as it goes up towards and down from the bar.

Exercise buffs have come up with many variations on the basic weighted chin up techniques. Some people wrap heavy chains on their body. Others suspend the dip belt on their shoulders rather than on their hips. People who feel the need to develop the muscles of the abdomen suspend weights on their thighs and bend the upper legs forward for support. An amusing and fun way to do weighted chin ups is to seat a smaller person on the upper legs which are bent slightly forward while doing the exercise. The feet have to be crossed to prevent the passenger from falling through the legs of the person training.

How Much Force Can Our Bones Handle Before They Break

You have known all along that your bones are the strongest part of your body. As they are assigned to give your body a structure, to hold your posture up and to protect your internal organs, your bones have to maintain their strength at all times. Of course, you cannot prevent external and unexpected circumstances from damaging your bones. But as much as you can, you can prevent it from happening.

Probably one of the best ways which you can protect your bones is to know just how much force they are capable of handling before they reach their breaking point. Your bones are really strong. In fact sometimes they are even considered as stronger than steel. But in principle, if you divide your bones by cubic inch sizes each can handle the weight of any object equivalent to 19,000 lbs or approximately 8,626 kilos.

However, considering force requires a different understanding. As most experts say, your bones can handle weight in various ways depending on the force with which they are delivered. The more force you apply to a bone, the easier it is to break it.

In some studies, it was found out that bones can handle about 3,300 Newton of force if thrown into a rib and up to 4,000 Newton if released onto the femur. The ribs can take a smaller amount of force because they are relatively thinner than the femur.

But these are only estimates of the force that can subject you to a fracture. It does not mean that these calculations are the least amount of force that your bones can handle. In fact, they are simply estimates in between because it still depends on the density and strength of your bones. Of course, your bones can handle less than 3,300 Newton of force if they are weaker and with lesser density. Therefore, you have to check first the strength of your bones to prevent overexertion and possible fractures.

It is great to know the estimates of how much force your bones can handle before they reach their breaking point. It is suggested that you consult with your doctor or osteopath first to ensure that your bones are in healthy condition. They may be able to prescribe exercises to maintain bone strength or alert you to possible future conditions that may present problems. Your trusted osteopath is the right person you should talk regarding all bone problems.

A Permissive Society

It is generally accepted that we have become a very permissive society, while at the same time, no contradiction, a very regulated society; both premises may sound incompatible, but the reality tells us otherwise. Parents give and give and give, while the state keeps a close eye on them, ready to pounce at the slightest hint of abuse. We must applaud of course when a careless mother is arrested for leaving her toddler in a hot car, as she clamors in her defense: “It was just for a minute.” We also applaud when children show a history of   bone   fractures  obtained through parental physical abuse and the father or paramour ends up in jail. Strangely enough we don’t applaud when an 8 year-old carrying 200 pounds is dragged through the aisles of the supermarket and the parents are pushing two carts overfilled with junk food.. paid with food stamps in many cases.

Parents can go to jail if a teen claims abuse; while the case is investigated, the family suffers the social humiliation even when innocent. And yet we fail to act against mothers who fail to feed their children a balanced diet with the logical consequence of diabetes and heart attacks. The state often provides food stamps to people who don’t need them, an abuse that goes unpunished. Among these, some illegal immigrants take advantage of our generous welfare system. Why should they work if they get everything they need? Housing, food, clothing, education, health care, are all free. Who can imagine such a paradise on earth in any other country in the world? Only here, where state and federal budgets can happily spend more than they have; politicians simply order more money to be minted unlike a working family which plunges into an ever growing debt.

The other side of the coin is the regulated society in which government tells us what to do, how to do it, where to do it, and how much to do it. The state wants to license everything under the sun, from cutting nails to combing hair to painting a room. It is getting so ridiculous that a city wants to license the sale of knives. It has truly become a nanny state. Why not regulate matches, cigarette lighters, rubbing alcohol, nail cutters, hammers, drills, etc..

We don’t punish parents who overfeed their kids, or who fail to teach them manners, or ignore the importance of personal responsibility, thus setting the social model not to follow. Yet we jail the mother of older teens who were drinking beer in her house with their friends, where she could keep an eye on them; we know that teens will drink alcohol, whether the legal age is 18, 21, or 51. The mother showed personal responsibility by recognizing that reality and protecting them.

Discipline is fast disappearing from American families. “I don’t want to end up in prison,” complained a mother who felt like slapping the face of an insolent daughter. Spanking a toddler in public is asking for trouble with CPS (Child Protective Services). Denying a sugary treat to your children in a supermarket is earning the visible condemnation of all present. Give them whatever they want to keep the peace. Let them watch television 4 hours a day without asking about the homework. “I’m too tired to argue with them,” sighed a working mother.

The result is the lack of discipline across the board in young America: Discipline is the backbone of success, whether material, academic or spiritual. Ask colleges what they think about freshmen: poor English, deficient math, and scarce scientific knowledge are the consequence of a soft and comfortable education that does not require sacrifices and hard work.

We should learn from most recent immigrants from developing countries, whether legal or not. They shame us by doing what we consider beneath our dignity and in the process they can save enough to make a better life for their families back home or to fulfill their American Dream.

Have we become too lazy by asking the state to give and give and give?

How to Be More Productive in 2016

2016 is here, and it’s time to get focused on our pet sitting business growth plan. The plan starts by identifying and eliminating our productivity time sucks so that we can accomplish great things in the new year. Below are our 7 tips on how to be more productive in 2016.

#1. Take a Pause Between Tasks

There are some days when I wake up and realize that I have a never-ending list of tasks to complete. I frantically write them all down in my notebook and then jump on trying to get them all completed. This is NOT an efficient way to manage your time or your tasks.

Solution on How to Be More Productive:

  1. Prioritize what is immediately necessary.
  2. Take a quick pause between tasks and ask yourself, “does this really matter,” or “is this moving me closer toward my business goals.”
  • If the answer is no, then move onto the next immediately important task.
  • You can go back to the previous tasks when your more important tasks have been completed.

Tip: Trust me on this one. I can’t tell you how many times I have tried barreling through my tasks just to realize that my day was gone, and I had gotten nothing of actual importance completed. Prioritization is key!

#2. Steer Clear of the “Perfectionism Predator”

According to communication expert Anett Grant: “Perfectionism is the predator of productivity.” This is another point that I have great familiarity with. I suffer from something called “perfectionism paralysis.” This characteristic can be defined as aspiring towards impossibly high goals. The thought of or the inability to reach certain perfection sets me on a procrastination and paralysis cycle where I look for any reason to not release a product or program for fear of criticism that the project is not perfect. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I catch myself doing this quite often. I really need to keep myself in check with it.

Solution on How to Be More Productive:

Here is some advice for you that my mentor once told me, “good is good enough. Get it out there! You can always go back and make changes after it is released.”

TIP: Read Getting Things Done by David Allen

#3. Beware of the Social Media Time Suck

The problem with social media is that you can log in to send out some work tweets or business Facebook posts, but then you check your news feed and then next thing you know two hours has passed and you have gotten nothing of substance done.

Solution on How to Be More Productive:

  1. Set specific time blocks per day for using social media for business.
  2. save your personal social media time for after business hours.

You can also use it as a distraction. Every time you receive a notification that a picture was posted of you, or that you were tagged in a post, your immediate reaction is to go check it out. Am I right? These distractions are eating up valuable time in your day and keeping you from accomplishing your goals.

Solution on How to Be More Productive:

  1. Turn off all notifications from your social media outlets.
  2. Set specific times to check for updates.

#4. Meditate for Massive Growth

Don’t run for the hills just yet. Meditation can be offputting to some people. I’m not sure why, but it most definitely scares some. Don’t be afraid!

Meditation has been proven to reduce stress, improve focus and concentration, increase emotional intelligence, and improve creativity and your overall health. These are all pretty awesome things, so why not give it a shot?

Solution on How to Be More Productive:

Download the Headspace App. This free app will get you started on a simple and easy meditation practice, and all it takes is 10 minutes per day. That’s it! I challenge you to give it a try.

#5. Stop Multitasking

Multitasking is trying to do more than one thing at a time and can be one of the worst productivity killers. In the age of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, email, facetime and social media, it is so easy to multitask without even realizing it. And here’s a newsflash, our brains are not wired to work that way. Researchers found that when we attempt to multitask, the brain “bottlenecks” the information and quickly moves its attention from one thing to the next, instead of addressing the items simultaneously. Rather than becoming more productive when faced with multiple tasks to accomplish at once, this suggests we only become more frazzled-and thus less able to handle the challenges of a high workload.

Solution on How to Be More Productive:

  • Find a distraction-free place to work. I suggest the library.
  • Block out distractions by shutting off all of your devices.
  • Set a timer and work in two-hour time blocks without distraction.

Tips: Just in case you don’t trust yourself to block out all of the distractions on your own some apps can help you out. Check out:

  1. Dark Room, a full screen, distraction free, writing environment. Dark Room is just about you and your text.
  2. Anti-Social is an app that makes it easy for you to target and block any distracting website so you can be more productive.
  3. Rescue Time is an Internet tool that tracks what users do all day so they can learn where they’re wasting time, get better at self-management, and make changes that amp up productivity.

#6. Get a Grip on Email

How often do you feel swamped by email? My guess is pretty often. Pet sitters receive email all hours of the days and night with requests and changes from current clients, new client inquiries and emails from their staff. It is endless! I honestly feel like I can write an entire mini-course on this subject, but for today, I’m going to give you some quick tips.

Solution on How to Be More Productive:

  1. Do not check email continuously throughout the day. Set specific times for when you will check and answer emails.
  2. Set boundaries and expectations with your clients by setting an autoresponder that clearly states your office hours and when they can expect to hear back from you.
  3. Create templates of often used replies so that you can quickly cut and paste.
  4. Unsubscribe from any emails that are polluting your inbox. (I hope they’re not mine, but if so, I get it. 😉 )

Tip: You can always create a Feedly account and subscribe to the RSS feeds from the writers who content you want to read. This way you’ll still receive the updates, but they’ll be neatly organized.

#7. Set Aside Time for Yourself

Taking time off is one of the most difficult things for a pet sitter to do. For whatever reason, you are expected to be on call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. An expectation that I will never quite understand. This is not a healthy lifestyle and is most certainly a recipe to spoil your productivity. You need time off to clear your mind and recharge your engines.

Solution on How to Be More Productive:

  1. Schedule your time off at the beginning of the year and alert your client list, so that they can plan their trips accordingly.
  2. I would also suggest hiring another pet sitter to cover your visits or contacting another local pet sitting business owner to cover your workload during your time off.

I am wishing you a very happy and productive 2016. You got this!

Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF): Risks of Spinal Surgery

Spinal fusion is an invasive surgical procedure performed to provide stability to the spine in the case of degenerative disc disease, nerve impingement and/or vertebral movement (spondylolisthesis). The surgery entails the removal of a disc or portion of a disc and the placement of a bone graft in the disc space that will fuse the vertebrae together. Additional grafts and hardware may be used on the outside of the spinal column for extra stability.

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is one type of spinal fusion surgery often performed to treat degenerative disc disease in cases where a lot of disc height has been lost. Anterior fusion is performed through an incision in the stomach. There are other approaches that dictate approaching through the back or side, but the anterior approach is favored sometimes for its avoidance of back muscles and spinal nerves.

ALIF is generally not performed on people with spinal instability caused by spondylolisthesis (vertebral fracture and movement) or tall disc spaces. In these cases, a posterior approach may be combined with ALIF to provide additional fusion sites.

Risks

Every type of surgery comes with unique risks. Risks that all types of fusion surgeries share are failure of fusion, bleeding, infection and scar tissue.

Anterior fusion carries unique risks due to its approach from the front of the body. One potential complication after surgery is incisional hernia. A hernia is present when part of the lining of the abdominal cavity, called the peritoneum, pushes through a hole or weak part in the connective tissue surrounding abdominal muscles and forms a sac. Incision of the abdomen can cause such a weak spot or hole. A hernia may be visibly protrude and retract when coughing or lifting. If it is painful to the touch or does not retract when pushed inward, surgery will likely be needed to patch the weak spot in the abdomen. Parts of organs can become trapped in the hole as the sac grows and blood supply can become cut off, strangling that part of the organ.

For males seeking fusion of the L5-S1 disc space, retrograde ejaculation is a concern. The anterior approach to this spinal segment puts the surgeon’s tools in close proximity with nerves supplying a valve that directs ejaculate from the body. If the nerve supply is damaged and the valve doesn’t open, the ejaculate will be directed to the bladder. While this does not pose risks to the man’s health or feeling of pleasure, it provides distinct complications with conception. An exact rate of incidence is unknown, but could be 5% or higher, according to Spine.org, for men seeking anterior fusion at the L5-S1 segment.

A minimally-invasive form of ALIF is available that requires a smaller incision and the use of a laparoscope, or camera, that guides the surgeon’s tools. While this procedure generally promises shorter recovery time and less scarring, it also poses a unique risk to the great blood vessels, the vena cava and aorta, that lay over the spine and travel to the lower body. Normal ALIF may cause damage to these vessels at a 1-2% incidence rate; risk increases with laparoscopic anterior fusion as the surgeon has limited view and mobility inside the incision pathway. Interference with these blood vessels is a major concern as it causes excessive bleeding.

When considering surgery, it is always important to weigh the risks against the possible benefits. While most surgeons boast fusion rates of 95% and higher, studies exist that put the rate much lower. A small study with 85 participants found that overall fusion rate was 80%. The study also specified results by level of fusion; rate of failure was much higher (31%) at the L3-L4 level than at the L5-S1 level (16%). These are all factors to consider when deciding whether surgery and what type of surgery is worth the risk for your unique situation. More on the above study can be found at http://www.mendeley.com/research/anterior-lumbar-interbody-fusion/.

A Last Resort

Any type of surgery is a last resort, yet not all spine surgeons are hesitant to prescribe fusions. Fusions are mainly performed to relieve pain from degenerating spinal discs. Have you exhausted all other treatment options for your condition?

Unless you are showing signs of major nerve damage (such as impaired bowel and bladder function), surgery should be a long way off. First, months of physical therapy should be performed to strengthen the core muscles that support the spine. You should be tested for muscle imbalances and postural distortions that could have caused excess pressure on the affected disc. A chiropractor or osteopath should check your spine for misalignment and resolve any if found.

Inversion therapy can be pursued at home to increase disc space, or decompression treatments can be sought from a chiropractor with a decompression machine in his or her office. Decompression treatments may or may not be covered by insurance, but they usually cost around $2,000 total without insurance. This is less than the out-of-pocket cost of spinal surgery for most people with insurance.

When considering various options for back pain treatment, be sure you’re informed of the risks and benefits. Anterior lumbar interbody fusion poses unique risks that should be understood before anything is signed off on.

5 Reasons Why Women Should Pump Iron!

Ladies – it’s time to conquer your fear of dumbbells, overcome your addiction to aerobics and discover the INCREDIBLE world of weight training for women!

I strongly believe all women should lift weights.

And I am not talking about lifting little 1kg dumbbells either… I mean BIG weights, with POWERFUL exercises like Squats, Deadlifts, Presses and Rows.

Take a minute to read these 5 great reasons why and hopefully you will be converted!

1. It will make you firmer and leaner…

Whilst cardio helps to burn fat, it does little to increase your “muscle tone”. The proper definition of a “toned muscle” is a muscle that is partially switched on. This partial contraction makes your muscles feel firmer and look leaner, even when you aren’t working out.

And what is the best way to increase muscle tone? Weight training… ideally lifting a weight that fatigues your muscles within 10 to 20 reps. Want to wave goodbye to your bingo wings? Choose bench presses and tricep kickbacks. Want to firm up your flabby thighs? Weighted squats are a must!

2. It will make you slimmer and NOT bulkier…

If you avoid weight training because you think it will make you bulky, think again. Women lack the essential hormone required for large amounts of muscle gain… testosterone! So unless you are planning on injecting any time soon, stop worrying about bulking up, you really won’t.

In fact, weight training will help you to lose body fat. Each pound of muscle you build up has little impact on your size but a huge impact on your resting metabolism – up to 50 extra calories a day! This means that women who lift weights burn more calories, even while they are sleeping.

3. It will make you stronger and more confident…

Unlike men, women aren’t born with natural strength, so if anything women are set to benefit far more from weight training. By challenging your muscles with progressively heavier weights, you will see your body start to adapt and get stronger. It’s a huge confidence boost!

This increased strength makes day to day activities like walking up stairs, lifting heavy bags or carrying children that much easier. When you can dead lift your own body weight you will have no problem picking up adults, let alone a small children!

4. It will help you to improve your posture and balance…

A weak, slouching posture often leads to saggy breasts and a pot belly. By following a well designed weight training programme you will strengthen your postural muscles – in particular your middle and lower back – pulling your shoulders back, lifting your chest and flattening your stomach.

A strong, balanced posture not only makes you look much slimmer, it also strengthens your joints and reduces your risk of injury and back problems as you age. If you choose functional strength exercises you also improve your balance and core stability, preventing falls.

5. It will reduce your risk of osteoporosis…

Osteoporosis is a disease of bone that leads to an increased risk of fracture. Women are far more prone to osteoporosis because they have less bone mass than men and take in less calcium. The menopause also increases the risk of breaks as falling levels of estrogen leads to reduced bone density.

Research has proven that in the same way your muscles adapt with weight training, so do your bones. By lifting weights regularly women can actually increase their bone density, in particular spinal bone density. This will dramatically improve your quality of life in later years.

And finally…if you have been converted, why not try kettlebell training? It is the perfect form of weight training for women! You only need one kettlebell to get started and you can even do it at home.

Low Back Pain and Chiropractic

A few days back I had a patient walk into my clinic asking for chiropractic treatment for lower back pain. He was bent over 30 degrees from the waist and was experiencing severe pain. He said “I have trouble standing as well as sitting down. I am not able to do my daily activities and I the pain is excruciating. Can you please help me?” This is a common scenario in my office now days with more and more patients facing lower back pain. Generally the patients have no idea about the cause of their back pain. Sometimes even the pain has advanced enough and affecting the nervous system resulting in sciatica nerve pain.

The lower back in human body carries a great deal of responsibility. It is the center of skeletal system and bears a great deal of body weight especially when lifting is not executed properly. That is the reason why many people frequently experience to pain can be caused due to various reasons like poor posture, strenuous exercise, any kind of sports and accident injuries or lifting excessive amount of weight. Age also plays a major role in health. Some of the symptoms of lower back pain include burning sensations, pain, stiffness and muscles spasms.

Usually people get relief from low back pain after few weeks of self-care. Trigeminal Neuralgia Treatment – Alternative Medicine to Treat and Prevent It!

In this article I’m going to share a few trigeminal neuralgia treatments involving alternative medicine and 2 ideas to prevent this problem. What system in your body is mainly responsible for pain? Yep, it’s the nervous system. It informs us that there is a problem such as our hand touching a hot pan. Of course pain isn’t the best of feelings right?

What if this system goes haywire and doesn’t act correctly? It could continually give someone pain, which isn’t good and that is what happens with this condition. Every so often shooting pain erupts in the face from a nerve called the trigeminal nerve.

Some people describe it as bursts of sharp, electric shocks that last a couple of seconds to minutes. The worst part is that oftentimes it’s unpredictable. This makes any activity not as enjoyable because it might be interrupted by shooting pains.

Can you guess what some of the most common treatments are? Yea, prescription drugs are a very common remedy that could be effective. Of course there are some negative side effects that should be considered. Next is surgery which can also be expensive and there are risks involved.

When it comes to alternative medicine one idea is acupuncture. In theory how it works is by helping energy or chi flow easier. Some people believe that if this chi energy gets disturbed that it can cause diseases. Not everyone agrees that acupuncture fights diseases, but many people do feel it can reduce pain from a wide variety of health problems including this trigeminal neuralgia.

Another idea would be visiting a chiropractor. How a chiropractor may be able to help is by realigning the bones in the upper spine. The nerve that causes the pain called the trigeminal nerve passes alongside the first bone in the neck called the Atlas when it heads to the face.

If something is pressing on that nerve, a realignment might be able to help with the pressure and the pain. There could be other causes as well, but it comes down to a nerve that isn’t acting correctly.

Also there is something called alpha-stim therapy that could relieve nerve pain. How it can work is by sending a small electric current through the nervous system. Some people feel it helps, but more studies are needed to determine how effective it really is.

If you’re interested in preventing nerve damage as well as heal them you could try omega 3 fats. In a clinical study at Queen Mary University in England researchers isolated nerve cells by mice. Then they caused damage to the cells or starved them of oxygen. Doing this killed off many of the cells, but nerve cells that were enriched with omega 3 had significant protection and a decrease in cell death.

Another idea to prevent nerve problems is by taking a good multivitamin supplement. There are certain vitamins such as vitamin B that plays a huge role in the health of nerves. In fact low levels of vitamin B12 have been linked to facial neuralgia according to the 14th Congress of the International Headache Society.

To sum everything a few alternative treatments for trigeminal neuralgia would be acupuncture, visiting a chiropractor and alpha-stim therapy. To both prevent and treat this problem a person should consume omega 3 and take a good multivitamin supplement.

Bullpen Catchers – How They Impact a Baseball Game and the Team

Bullpen catchers are the men in a baseball game who have the responsibility of warming up relief pitchers in the bullpen. Most of these catchers are anonymous to baseball fans and the sports media, never get a baseball card made of them (even when the mascot sometimes does!), yet they impact the overall experience at a baseball game in ways most people do not recognize. While their primary duty is to warm up relief pitchers during a game, there are many other things bullpen catchers do to while serving in what some consider to be a “thankless” role for the team. Here are just a few things they do to contribute:

  • Many teams carry only two catchers, with another fielder being the “emergency” catcher. Ideally the manager of the team wants to have all of his reserve catchers ready to be used in case of pinch hitting, pinch running (although there are VERY few catchers who are used as pinch runners!), injuries, or simply helping the pitching coach evaluate a pitcher’s performance. The bullpen catcher frees up the manager to keep all of his catchers available to be used during a game by replacing the need for one of the reserve catchers to be in the bullpen.
  • Occasionally the bullpen catcher will be called into duty before a game to catch the Opening Pitch by the honored person. Often, he is called to escort and warm up that person to make sure that he or she makes a decent attempt at throwing in front of the crowd.
  • During pre-game batting practice the bullpen catcher will share the load with the other catchers of warming up pitchers who need to throw on their respective “off days.” Every pitching coach gives his pitchers a specific throwing schedule and routine. It is in these practice sessions that pitchers work on their mechanics and fine tune their deliveries. Other exercises include the “Towel Drills”, “Flat Tosses”, “Long Tosses”, and other exercises specific to pitchers.
  • After working with the pitchers, many bullpen catchers are then asked to throw the remaining part of batting practice or work with the hitters on “Flip Toss” or other hitting drills.
  • A bullpen catcher, if he has caught for many years, also can be a de-facto “psychologist” in the bullpen. Relief pitchers have the stereotype of being crazy, mentally unbalanced, etc. While this is not necessarily a true stereotype – although I have met my share of a few wild men in the bullpen (!) – the ability for a pitcher to trust his bullpen catcher’s feedback is an important part of a pitcher being ready to enter a game. Barry Zito and Huston Street, in an August 2006 article by an MLB.com writer, are cited as trusting the experience of their bullpen catcher in order to help them get ready (http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060817&content_id=1615561&vkey=news_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak)
  • In between innings, if the bullpen is located along the foul lines of the field, will often warm up one of the outfielders. Two balls are carried by the outfielders in between innings, and one is shared between two of the outfielders to stay loose. The other is tossed between the left fielder (or right fielder depending on which side the bullpen is located) and the bullpen catcher to help the outfielder stay loose.
  • If a bullpen is located along the foul lines, and one of the other catchers is catching a particular pitcher, the bullpen catcher will stand behind the pitcher to protect him in case of a hard line drive hit toward the bullpen.

A bullpen catcher may also serve in multiple roles off the field:

  • Give post-game lessons for kids when the other players are in the clubhouse.
  • Appear in uniform for various local charity events or events with emphasis for kids.
  • Help the team with its marketing efforts, especially in the lower levels of the minor leagues.
  • Work with the pitching coach to determine ways to help pitchers improve.
  • Help set up the locker room before opening day. Yes, this actually does happen!
  • Help the general manager with on-field and off-field promotions

In all, the bullpen catcher does a tremendous amount of unrecognized work. Furthermore, he sometimes ends up catching (and returning) more pitches and warm-up throws (between pre-game practice and in the bullpen) than the starting catcher does! If you want to make a player’s day, find out who your team’s bullpen catcher is, send him an autograph request, and chances are you will get one back faster than any other request. And if you happen to meet your team’s bullpen catcher in July, August, or September please remember that it may take him a few extra seconds to raise his arm to shake your hand. All those throws do take a toll!

Natural Home Remedies for Stress, Mental Disorders

What are these?

Nervous diseases are more difficulty to diagnose than diseases of the various organs of the body because the nervous system is hidden from the eye of the physician and it can be known only from the disturbances of the organs governed by the affected nerves whether and of what type the nervous diseases is. Under this head come apoplexy, forgetfulness, hysteria, mental defectiveness, mental illness, neurasthenia and others. The most common nervous weakness, nervous break down or nervous exhaustion.

Causes:

Many factors contribute to the production of nervous diseases. Some people are born with a nervous disposition and it is that category which generally suffers from headaches, neuralgia, hysterical manifestations and bizarre forms of mental activity. The nervous system is exposed to the fast pace of modern life, which tends to bring on many diseases like anxiety states, digestives disturbances and exhaustion. Shocks to both mind and body, such as the loss of a dear one, money reverses, an unfortunate love affair and an accident may be the starting point of many chronic nervous complaints. Certain organic poisons like the one produced in body by diseases like syphilis give rise to serious nervous disorders. Chronic alcoholism may bring on severe mental derangement. The organic disorders manifest themselves in the shape by hysteria, anxiety states and nervous breakdowns.

Weakness of the nervous system can give rise to diseases like dyspepsia or palpitation, which cannot be helped by remedies directed towards those organs. It is but natural since it is the brain and the nervous system enclosed in it, which controls the bodily functions. A sudden loosening of bowels or the bladder in case of fright is an example. Another example is of certain persons with a strong will power who are able to fight serious crisis brought on by diseases much better than ordinary individuals.

Symptoms:

A person suffering from nervous weakness or debility generally experiences a sense of nameless fear, agitation, perplexity, confusion, worry, disappointment, loneliness, irritability and insomnia. The physical symptoms are constipation, dyspepsia, headaches, vague aches and pains all over the body and feverishness. The patient is also inclined to be a hypochondriac. The moment he reads about or hears the symptoms of a disease he imagines that he suffers from it. The wise physician will keep him away from any medical literature.

The main cause of a nervous breakdown is the rat race in which modern man engages. The lust for money and success-which again is measured in the good things of life, -motivates a man to overwork, both mentally and physically. Constant worry about things being done and to be done lead to tension and a man falls prey to his imagination. Overstraining leads to mistakes which erodes his self-confidence and after that the only way is the way downhill.

Treatment:

Since a healthy mind can reside only in a healthy body, see that the body regains its health. The paint must live a normal, natural life. He should try to get sleep. During the day also he should be advised to relax in a bed for some hours. The loosening of tensions by relaxation will help his organs to do their work properly and he would be able to get rid of the poisons.

The next imperative for such a patient is exercise. He should take walks and if possible take a jogging. His foods should include bread made from wheat from which bran has not been sieved out, fruits and boiled vegetables. Since nervous debility shows a marked lack of vitamin B, the deficiency should be made up by inclusion in his diet of foods, which contain it in larger measure. Unpolished rice, milk, cucumber, mangoes, pears, pineapples, guava, tomatoes, raisins and leafy vegetables should be his mainstay. He should be asked to eat his food in a relaxed manner, chewing it properly before ingestion.

Massages can help in reactivating the nervous system. Hydropathic treatment is also recommended and that merely consists in bathing his spine with a garden or bathroom shower for a couple of minutes. The water should be cold. During summer cold showering of the spine could be done three times or more and in winter twice would do.

The patient must be told to exercise his willpower to get rid of the disease. He must be told that he is getting better. Psychological impressions must be created on his mind, which will help to understand that his disease is not incurable. Suggestion is the best thing in such circumstances. It has to be remembered that certain nervous diseases like hysteria are the result of autosuggestion and nothing else.

Persons suffering from nervous debility are always on the look out for crutches on which they can lean or shoulders on which they can weep. The wise physician tries to reawaken their self-confidence and the desire to stand on their own feet.

Exercises:

Some exercises are helpful in dealing with nervous debility.

Sit on your feet with your stomach touching your knees. Try to keep your spine straight and extend both your arms. Now thrust your right foot forward and stand up with a jerk. Resume your earlier position and repeat the exercise with your left foot.

Stand with your right leg about a foot from your left. Join your hands and extend the arms downward, upward and then backward. More the arms with the hands joined in a circular motion and inhale and exhale deeply during the movement.

Lie on your back on the floor with your elbows touching your sides. Then try to raise the body with your elbows and heels and then resume the former position.

Stand like a boxer and make positions like you are hitting somebody with your fists. Or, to put it differently, indulge in shadow boxing for some time, moving your feet as a boxer does.

Stand in the normal position and then sit down with a jerk on your toes, with your palms touching the ground. Suddenly jerk your legs back just as you were about to do push-up. The exercise is akin to doing sit-ups and push-ups simultaneously.

If this regimen is followed for some weeks, you can get rid of any nervous disorder. It is also beneficial for sciatica, hydrosel and dropsy.
