Vitamins That Help You Grow Taller

Vitamins are not only critical and necessary for the human general health, but essential for height growth. You can acquire the vitamins that help you grow taller, of which Vitamin A and D are two representatives, by eating a well balanced diet, which is also a natural and safe way. Supplements or foods with added vitamins can also be considered if needed.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A can be found in carrots, liver, egg yolk, green and yellow vegetables, margarine and yellow fruits. It helps to not only promote growth and strengthen bones and teeth, but also make skin healthy and shine the hair. The immune system also benefits from Vitamin A.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps to improve the absorption of Calcium and Vitamin A, which strengthens the bones, into the bones and teeth. Bone diseases like rickets and eye diseases such as conjunctivitis can be prevented with enough intake of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D can be found in salmon and sardines which might be rare in your recipe. Milk added with Vitamin D can also be found on the market. But a little tip with little effort can give you enough store of it. The sun rays enable the skin to produce Vitamin D. Two or three times of direct sun exposure for ten or fifteen minutes per week would give enough Vitamin D for an adult.

Vitamin A and D are two of numerable vitamins that help you grow taller. Others, such as Vitamin Bs, E, K, are all that should not be neglected when you are preparing your diet. Such Vitamins are so important a factor for growth in height that you should try to intake as much as possible.

How to Market a Medical Service

There were several doubts raised by physicians about marketing a medical practice in the late 1980’s and early 90’s. Today, all those doubts have been flushed down the gutter. The scenario is such that every medical practice, be it an old one or a new, is scurrying to fend off fierce competition. World population has crossed 7 billion mark and so as the number of patients. In order to gain popularity and earn hefty revenues, physicians are eating into each other’s patients. Room for new doctors is narrow, as patients are absorbed by hospitals and reputed physicians with the help of smart marketing. This article will explain how you can use marketing as a powerful tool and what avenues you should consider before launching a marketing campaign.

1. Marketing a medical service requires an in depth knowledge of the target audience. Your ability to determine client needs and finding out ways to establish contact methods have to be supreme. For instance, if you practice dentistry, you want to target kids, their parents and elderly as well.

2. Create an online presence through a website. Website development is one of the subtle and tactical ways to inform prospective patients about your practice. Feature high quality and informative content along with ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos. Mention your address, working hours, services and emergency visits, if you offer any. Back it up by good quality search engine optimization. Having a website alone will not get you the desired number of patients. In order to make your website search engine friendly, hire SEO experts.

3. Consider the impact social media has made on the medical industry. Are you taking full advantage of what Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter has to offer? Set up a complete personalized profile on these sites. The more precise you are, the better it will be for potential patients to find you via the search engines. Make sure to mention your accolades, skills, expertise, and include a professional photo of yourself to increase trustworthiness.

4. Content creation is a large part of medical marketing. If you seek huge traffic to your website, it’s better late than never to start a blog. You can write blog posts on your expertise or anything related to the medical services you provide. Add some health tips for readers. Share your blog with existing patients and encourage them to further share it with their friends.

In the end, the thing, which matters the most, is patient’s needs. To give them the ultimate care and treatment must be your first priority. Marketing will show a positive effect only when you take care of your patients.

The Major Differences Between Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine

Chinese medicine is one of the most sophisticated medical systems in the world. It has been enhanced through thousands of years of experience and research. Its unique difference from Western medicine is that it focuses on “health” rather than on “healing” because Chinese medicine promotes overall wellness of an individual, as opposed to the approach of Western medicine in treating the symptoms of an illness. As a matter of fact, in ancient China, a physician would not be remunerated for treating his patient who had fallen ill, because it was his first duty to keep his patient from illness. Essentially, Chinese medicine is “heal-all”, while Western medicine is “cure-all.”

Another major difference between Chinese medicine and Western medicine is that Chinese medicine focuses on plants as remedies. Plants are essential to life. In fact, nearly all the food you eat comes from plants or animals who eat plants. Accordingly, to the Chinese, plants enhance health. In Chinese medicine, the number of plants used as medicines is greater than the number of plants for food. In Chinese medicine, there is not much distinction between a food and a medicine. Even thousands of years before Christ, the Chinese believed that every single plant on earth has its specific function in the well-being of an individual. For this reason, Chinese physicians have always been on the lookout for a remedy in any herbal plant.

Not until recent decades and the opening of China to the Western world, little of traditional Chinese medicine was known to the Western medical community. Initially, Western doctors and scientists were skeptical of the potency of Chinese medicine, which is based on herbal cures and remedies. This is not surprising because in the beginning of the 20th century, Western medical science had dismissed even traditional Western plant remedies as folklore medicine — concoctions only for grandmothers but not for professionally trained doctors. With the emergence of the pharmaceutical industry, Western scientists began to focus almost exclusively on chemical drugs to treat different diseases with different symptoms. A case in point is human cancer. In the early 20th century, cancer was relatively unknown, but the number of cancer cases soon began to explode exponentially. With the growth of the billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry and the need to validate the potency of these chemical drugs, more research studies have to be conducted. Given that Western medicine aims at treating the symptoms rather than eradicating the causes of a disease, and that chemical drugs often generate many adverse side effects, more new chemical drugs have to be developed to treat those new symptoms.

Until fairly recently, after many years of concern at the pervasive adverse side effects of pharmaceutical drugs, is there an interest in Chinese herbal remedies and medicinal foods. Such plants include aloes, garlic, feverfew, and licorice, among others.

Another major difference between Chinese medicine and Western medicine is that Chinese medicine often incorporates Western medicine into the medical system. For example, in Beijing hospitals, a doctor may carry out surgery in the Western manner with state-of-the-art equipment, while the anesthetist may use acupuncture and herbal preparations for preoperative and postoperative treatments. The Chinese are using the best from over four thousand years of experience to complement Western medicine. Results have proved that traditional Chinese medicine works even though it may not always conform to the current Western scientific theories.

According to the Okinawa Centenarian Study, Okinawa, Japan, and Hong Kong are the top three areas of the world in life expectancy. They all share an important common characteristic of incorporating both Eastern and Western approaches to healing in their health care systems. The use of natural or herbal tonics in these populations far exceeds that of North America.

Get the best of both Chinese and Western medicine so that they complement each other to give you the best health to enable you to become younger and healthier for longer. Always keep an open and inquisitive mind for better health.

Casting Under Pressure With Injection Molding

Mold making and casting is a fascinating activity which can take varied forms. From clay modeling to making simple one-part molds or the more complicated approach of two-part molds. In fact, mold makers even make multi-part molds at times to capture all facets and other details of the model. The procedure of making molds also varies from pouring the mold making material to spraying it or even brushing it on the model.

Apart from the regular blanket, glove and even shell type, another making and casting technique is injection molding. It is actually a simple procedure in which the casting material is forced into this under pressure!

Injection molding can be done in single or multi-part molds. Since it is favored for capturing minute details, generally complicated two-part molds feature in injection molding. Tiny holes (called sprues) are bored into the mold all along its surface. This is where the casting material will be injected into this.

The casting material like polyurethane resin is filled in a syringe and the large hypodermic needle is inserted into the mold sprues. Pressure is applied to ensure all cavities are filled. The procedure continues until the casting material spews out of all the sprues. This shows that the casting material has displaced the air inside the mold and adequately filled all the nooks and crannies in the mold.

It is allowed to cure before being demolded carefully. You will find a thin-bodied cast that is an exact replica of the original model, down to every tiny nook and crevice. Other casting methods fail to achieve such a high level of precision. The demolded piece does not need to be cleaned or finished much either. However, models with large undercuts cannot be replicated with injection molding.

Injection molding is a commonly-used manufacturing process for producing thin-walled parts with great accuracy. It is generally used to make small plastic, metal and even glass items. Model parts for miniature cars, trains and complicated superhero figures are made with the injection molding process. It will yield accurate copies very quickly and in large numbers too.

The manufacturing process involves feeding the casting material into a machine which crushed it to a liquid state before injecting the same into the mold under high pressure. This mechanical process is repeated again and again to make multiple copies. The plastic in the mold is allowed to cool before being ejected from the mold.

While injection molding is a simple process that proves cost-effective, making the molds can turn out very expensive. It has to be made with steel or aluminum and precision machined to capture all the details properly. However, when artists use injection molding technique in their studios, they make use of clay modeling techniques and silicone rubber to make a precise block mold. This serves well for injection molding!

Flies and Injuries – A Surprising Benefit

Over the course of history, there have been a number of interesting connections between injuries and medicine. One of the most surprising has been a potentially beneficial relationship between maggots, or baby flies, and the healing of infected   wounds .

The benefits of using fly larvae for healing infected  wounds  have been recognized for hundreds of years. On the European continent, certain types of beneficial fly larvae found their way into  wounds  on their own. This accident happened mainly under battlefield conditions. It was recorded after this happened that when the fly larvae were present, the  wound  tended to heal more quickly and with fewer complications. These  wounds  were compared to  wounds  that had not been infested by fly larvae.

During the American Civil War, the same benefits were recorded by Confederate doctors. One, a Dr. Joseph Jones, a ranking Confederate medical officer, noted that he had frequently seen open or neglected  wounds  filled with maggots and as far as he could tell, the larvae “only destroy dead tissues, and do not injure specifically the well parts.”

While Dr. Jones certainly noticed the benefits, the first therapeutic use of fly larvae may be credited to a different Confederate medical officer, J.F. Zacharias. This officer reported that fly larvae were capable of cleaning “in a single day a  wound  much better than any agents we had at out command.” He attributes many saved lives to the use of fly larvae.

During World War One, an orthopedic consultant to American forces in France treated two soldiers who had been overlooked on the battlefield for a week after the fighting stopped. He observed that although the compound fractures and abdominal  wounds  were filled with fly larvae, the  wounds  had begun healing with no evidence of blood poisoning or infection.

The same doctor used the same concept when he was later a Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medical School. While treating a particularly infected  wound , he obtained a supply of fly larvae and allowed them to devour the dead and infected tissues. The  wounds  proceeded to heal within six weeks.

Following the clinical experiments and experiences, the use of larvae in  wound  management became very common. It reached its high point in the 1930s. During this time, larvae of the greenbottle fly were produced commercially in large numbers for exactly this purpose. Early literature on the topic reference many successful cases using fly larvae in a variety of fields. Chronic or infected  wounds  including osteomyelities, abscesses, burns, and other injuries have all been helped through the use of fly larvae.

Uses Of Different Natural Herbs

Herb comes from a Sanskrit word which means “to eat”. Natural herbs are extracted from plants that come in the mild zone. In the present era, herbs are used for making color or flavor, but as we look at the history, they were used as medicines. In the ancient period, they have been used for various purposes. Rohan Online Half Elf Ranger Class Build (PvP-PvE)

Half Elf Ranger Class Build (PvP/PvE)

The half elf ranger build in my opinion is the king of solo. This build is designed to bombard enemies from an insane attack range. The Ranger has a decent critical rate and some great rooting spells.

Stat Build: Your leveling points should be distributed as 1VIT – 3 DEX or This ranger build has no psyche so you are gonna rely on pots for your mana so you must be careful not to deplete it too soon.. You will have some decent HP with 130 points of VIT just in case someone might be lucky enough to get close to you.

This build has a large distribution of DEX to boost your ranged attack quite a bit. You will have great damage and a long range to do it in.

PvE: The easiest class to solo with by far and one of the fasted classes to level also. Most mobs won’t even get close enough to you to do any damage since you have long attack range and have the ability to slow your target mobility speed. Only ranged mobs will have that chance to get a few shots off before they hit the ground bleeding. You only really need to cast one skill per mob before they die since you will be doing some nasty normal ranged attack damage. You will also have an easy time when in a high level mob grind party. You don’t really have to move around much just let tankers tank and do a little pulling here and there.

PvP: The ranger class i one of the few classes that do well against ranged and melee based classes in PvP. You take down magic type classes pretty easily and melee classes can be stunned and slowed down to a crawl before they can get to you. You can do some powerful critical damage at a long range using Critical Shot. The ranger has some great PvP skill at their disposal including Luxury Shot and Premium Shot leaving enemies with missed parts of their HP bar lol. A nice spell to initiate your PvP sequence is Speed Wind which boosts your attack speed to an insane rate that lasts 10 seconds. When a melee class finally does get to you, hit them with Brandish Kick which has a 70% chance to stun target for 9 seconds. You can kite away from enemies easily since you have increased mobility skills.

Conclusion: This ranger build is balanced and you will have extended use of your skills and will be able to solo and pvp well. You don’t have a whole lot of mana so be careful. Remember that range is your advantage, don’t let melee get to close or they will rip you up 🙂

Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatment Options

Prostate cancer is actually a treatable kind of the disease. Many patients diagnosed with this kind of cancer survive their ordeal because of two things: the early detection of the malignant cells in their prostate and the combination of the treatments that are used.

The early detection of prostate cancer is important because it is in the early stages that the malignant cells are still controllable. They are still low in number and the damage they have done is still minimal. Performing surgery and chemotherapy may still guarantee complete elimination of the cells. On the other hand, if the disease is detected on its advanced stage, recovery is slimmer. Hence, there is a need to employ more aggressive treatment options.

There are several advanced prostate cancer treatment options that a patient can use. These treatments may be more like the ones administered to prostate cancer in its early stages. It can consist of surgery, chemotherapy and even radiation treatment.

However, with advancement of the cancer, one treatment is not enough to lessen the increasing number of cancer cells that come with it. There is a need to combine two or more treatments in order fight the cancer cells aggressively and more effectively. This is also to avoid metastasizing of the cancer cells and affecting other surrounding parts.

The treatments available for advanced form of this cancer include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery and hormone therapy. While these treatments all work to eliminate the cells, prevent its spread and are actually treatments alone, advanced prostate cancer treatment options are combination of these methods. The combinations are known to be more aggressive and more effective. For example, the patient can go for surgical removal of the tumor. As maintenance, chemotherapy can be added as treatment in order to ensure that no more cells will be left to inflict further damage.

As another option, alternative treatments are also used in prostate cancer. These are all natural methods such as diet protocols and concoctions known to possess anti-cancer properties.

Of course, before trying out these treatments available, it is best to consult the doctor first. The doctor will provide a thorough evaluation on the condition of the patient as well as the state the patient is already in. He may advise doing extensive procedures or take several medications both for the extermination of the cancerous cells as well as the other symptoms that come with the disease.

How to Help People With Disabilities Participate in Games

The golden rule is a guide to most situations in life, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It is not always easy to put ourselves in another person’s shoes and try to understand how we would feel if we were them. However, it is important to do in order to be able to adapt activities to allow for our friends or family with  disabilities  to participate with us. Naturally humans are social beings, regardless of physical limitation, and even many mental  disabilities . Because it can be difficult for others to know how to effectively involve those who have  disabilities  into regular activities, here are some tips to help get started.

Adapting the game

At first evaluation it may not seem that someone can participate in the activity who has a mental or physical  disability . All it takes is a little creativity and a willingness to help adapt the game or puzzle to fit the needs of individuals playing. One of the first things to do is think of ways to simplify or change an aspect of the activity according to the needs of the individual you are trying to involve. There are so many different  disabilities  and levels of impairment, that individual circumstances and status will need to be evaluated for the game or activity to be chosen and then adapted accordingly.

1) If there are different level questions, allow for someone mentally disabled to have the easier level each time, instead of it changing throughout the game.

2) If multiple answers are not given, offer them when questions are read (make it fun and even give silly options so the answer is clear),

3) Make up questions unrelated to the game that are of the person’s interest, but still move them or score when they get it right as others in the game are scored. For example, ask questions about a family members favorite color, a multiple choice about their favorite meal, what they do before they go to bed, etc. Daily interest and activities are great things to make questions about. If a person has a physical  disability , such as not having the use of their arms, make another way for them to point to puzzle pieces, such as a stick they hold between their teeth to point to the piece they want picked up. Whomever you are trying to help participate, simply look for ways to change the game or make it possible for them to play.

Although  disabilities  may cause many limitations, they do not prevent people from being able to do the same things as everyone else. If playing is not possible for the person on their own, create a way for them to be involved. Involvement may not be actually playing, but setting up or sorting pieces. Sometimes it is enough just to have something to do with everyone else.

1) Give options of puzzles to put together and let them choose.

2) Set up two puzzles of different levels on tables next to each other. If they are not able to do a simple puzzle by them self, have someone work with them.

3) Ask them to find all the puzzle pieces with a certain color on them, or with a straight edge.

1) Partner up and have them pick letters out of the bag and place the letters on the board.

2) Change the rules for them, such as two letter words and proper words being allowed.

3) Help form words and then give a choice of what word to lay down.

Ask Questions

Most people like for others to ask them what they want instead of assuming. When a situation is new or unfamiliar, it may be uncomfortable to know what to do or how to act appropriately. Because a person feels awkward they try to avoid asking the person with  disabilities  questions. Asking questions is often the best way to meet a person’s needs and help them find their interests and be involved. Appropriate questions that’s purpose is to understand and assist will not make the person feel belittled or embarrassed. Instead, they will allow for them to comfortably express their likes, interests and opinions. Talk to the individual directly and ask questions, not their parent or caretaker. If they have trouble understanding or communicating the person assisting them will help. When doing an activity ask specific questions to discover what they like and what they want.

There are so many different types and levels of  disabilities  that these suggestions do not cover them all, but are meant to start the thought process toward thinking of ways to incorporate those with  disabilities  into the activity. This will take more time and patience, but the efforts will be well worth it. Remember to consider the individual and adapt specifically for them. By thinking of what you would want someone to do for you, it will be easier to think of what you can do for them.

Healing Miracle of Coconut Oil

Modern medical science has uncovered many healing miracles of coconut oil such that it can actually protect you against heart disease, diabetes, cancers, liver and kidney diseases, osteoporosis, dental decay and skin infections.

But coconut oil’s healing miracles don’t stop there. It also relieves symptoms associated with illnesses like pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, chronic inflammation, prostate enlargement, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, stomach ulcers, constipation, psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis. But that’s not all.

It continues to astonish doctors with its antimicrobial ability to kill viruses such as influenza (aka flu), hepatitis C, herpes, measles and bacteria such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection, and fungi and yeast such as Candida, ringworm, and thrush. These are resistant to drugs and antibiotics. The credit goes to MCFAs in the oil as they basically strengthen your immune system while killing bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites present around us.

Yes, as unbelievable as it sounds, right now some doctors are including this liquid diamond (I call it) in their treatments against the world’s most deadly incurable killer – HIV / AIDS. All thanks to the super antimicrobes in the oil which can rip the HIV viruses apart. Besides those many healing miracles, coconut oil can also help you lose weight. Let’s take a look at the next section for its weight loss benefits.

Weight Loss Benefits of Coconut Oil

Although this liquid diamond is a fat, it won’t cause weight gain easily, but instead, promote weight loss. How?

First of all, it gets converted to energy immediately (like carbohydrate) once digested in your body. Secondly, it improves your thyroid function, the gland that controls your metabolism. Finally, it amazingly boosts your metabolism due to its abundant MCFAs.

MCFA creates a thermogenic (or calorie-burning) effect where it burns more calories at an accelerated rate to produce more heat. Hence, you can remove unwanted fat faster than you expect. The thermogenic effect actually makes you feel warmer and more energetic up to 24 hours!

Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil

Having an active metabolism also enables your injuries to heal and repair faster so as to reduce your risk to inflammation. When used as a topical cream, coconut oil soothes and heals the irritated or affected areas on your skin caused by skin diseases such as psoriasis, hemorrhoids, warts and athlete’s foot. It’s also an effective healing salve against blisters and sunburns.

Again, it’s the MCFAs at work. They accelerate the metabolic rate and hence the healing process of damaged tissues.

Coming from a natural vegetable source, rich in antioxidants and free from pesticides and other chemicals and contaminants, you can use the oil as an excellent beauty and hair care product. It does more than what a simple skin cream can do. While other creams temporarily moisturize the surface of your dry skin, coconut oil penetrates into the layers under your skin to prevent free radical formation, remove dead layers and encourage growth of new, healthier tissue. When applied to your hair, it becomes your natural hair conditioner and dandruff controller.

Are you amazed by the healing miracles of coconut oil? Don’t take my word for it. Go get a small bottle for a test-drive and use it every day over the course of 2 weeks. The results you get will speak for themselves. And make sure you get virgin coconut oil for both optimal health and skin care benefits.

If you have taken more than one course of antibiotics in the last few months, or have been using steroid medication, these can cause   dysbiosis  to occur in the body.  Dysbiosis  is a problem the develops when healthy bacteria that usually reside in the body’s mucous membranes and gut are killed off and an environment is created in which there can be an overgrowth of opportunistic yeast.

Stress is another factor that is believed to contribute to the development of thrush infections. When we are stressed it is much harder for out biological systems to maintain the right balance that prevents yeast and bacterial infections from taking hold.

A poor diet can also play a role in frequent fungal infections. If you love to eat junk food, especially carbohydrates and sugars, this will be providing the fuel that the yeast needs to thrive and take over.

There are a huge assortment of natural remedies you can use to help get rid of thrush once and for all. The treatment plan that you follow should involve a three stage process. First of all you should change your lifestyle in such a way that the yeast is not encouraged, for example by adhering to healthy diet rich in fiber and fresh vegetables. The next step would be to use a supplement each day to kill off the fungus, and the final stage would be to repopulate the body with healthy bacteria.

Garlic, oil of oregano, barberry, and goldenseal all have anti-fungal properties. If you were to take one or more of these supplements each day for a few weeks you should find that the yeast infection is brought under control.

Once you are aware that the problem is going away, you should continue with the yeast killer supplement and also add a good probiotic to your daily routine. Probiotics contain beneficial bacteria that are needed in the body to minimize the chance of fungus taking hold. When taking a yeast killer and probiotics, you should do so at separate times of the day.

The best probiotics to fight thrush are those that contain Acidophilus. All probiotics need to be kept in the fridge otherwise the bacteria they have may become inactive. The best home remedies for thrush should always integrate a good probiotic.

Menstruation and the Menstrual Cycle

Menstruation is the monthly vaginal discharge of blood and endometrial tissues that are shed from the lining of a woman’s uterus (womb). Also referred to as a period, menstruation is part of the menstrual cycle which prepares a woman’s body for pregnancy each month. It is an important indicator of general and reproductive health, although other health factors may limit this capacity.

The first period is called menarche and is often a developmental defining moment for young girls marked by pride mingled with some anxiety. In the United States, the average age for the onset of menstruation is 12 years old. However, menstruation can be as early as 9 or 10 or as late as 16 or 17 for some girls, depending on a variety of factors which includes the young woman’s general health, nutritional status, and body weight relative to height. Usually the first period starts about 2 years after breasts first start to grow. Therefore, if a girl has not had her first period by age 15, or if it has been more than 2 to 3 years since breast growth started, she should see a doctor.

The Menstrual Cycle

Although termed the ‘menstrual cycle’, since menstruation is the obvious monthly event during reproductive life, the normal menstrual cycle is mostly a reflection of ovarian events. Monthly menstruation is an obvious marker that the various levels of interaction between hypothalamus, anterior pituitary gland, ovary and the uterus are functional. Thus the core events of the normal menstrual cycle are an integration of an interconnected neuroendocrine feedback loop: the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis.

The process is regulated by the levels and interactions of certain hormones within this loop, which govern the release of an egg from the ovary, the preparation of the endometrium (uterine lining) for pregnancy, and the shedding of the endometrial tissue (extra uterine tissues) when no pregnancy is begun. The uterus is not a core player in the normal menstrual cycle, but rather is a target organ for hormonal action. Any interruption of this axis at any point may lead to disordered menstruation.

The menstrual cycle for a woman has been compared with the moon, because the typical menstrual cycle mimics the lunar cycle of 28 days. The length of the cycle varies from woman to woman, and in some women it varies considerably from month to month as well depending on a variety of factors, including the woman’s physical, emotional, and nutritional health.

Cycles can range anywhere from 21 to 35 days in adults and from 21 to 45 days in young teens. This is because of the fact that women’s cycle tend to shorten and become more regular with age. However, the average cycle is 28 days long, counting from day 1 of a menstrual period up to (but no including) day 1 of the next period. While most periods last from 3 to 5 days, anywhere from 2 to 7 days is normal.

Phases of the Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle can be thought of as consisting of two phases, the follicular phase and the luteal phase, with its circle occurring in a number of organs and tissues. The follicular phase (also called the preovulatory or proliferative phase), occurs from day 1 to 13; while the luteal phase (also called postovulatory or secretory phase), from days 14 to 28.

Between the follicular and luteal phases, on or about day 13 or 14 (at mid-cycle), ovulation – the release of an egg from the ovary – takes place. Ovulation is the shortest part of the menstrual cycle, lasting only a day or so. The ripened egg (ovum) bursts through the sac (follicle) that contains it and travels into the fallopian tubes which have become active at this point. As soon as the egg is released, the menstrual cycle enters its last phase.

Follicular Phase

The follicular phase is the first half of the monthly cycle, and it includes the days of menstruation. Due to the low levels of the hormones, estrogen and progesterone, toward the end of the previous cycle’s luteal phase, the hypothalamus is stimulated to produce gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). This in turn triggers the pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH). FSH stimulates the growth of several follicles (each surrounding one egg) in the ovary, one of which will become the Graafian follicle, that is, the one activated to produce a mature egg cell. LH stimulates estrogen secretion by the follicles.

During this phase the levels of estrogen increases and also thereafter, LH suppresses the activity of all of the follicles but one – the Graafian follicle, which continues to develop and is groomed to complete maturity. Meanwhile, the endometrium thickens in preparation for the implantation of a fertilized egg.

As estrogen concentrations rise, FSH levels decline because, it is believed, the higher estrogen level now has a negative effect on the hypothalamus. LH levels remain constant, however. At mid-cycle, the end of the follicular phase, the high level of ovarian estrogen causes the pituitary to release a large amount of LH, which in turn stimulates the Graafian follicle to reach maturity and release an egg (ovulation); the empty follicle is then transformed into the corpus luteum, which secretes both progesterone and estrogen.

Luteal Phase

With ovulation, the follicular phase, that has been dominated by the hormone estrogen, ends. This is followed by the luteal phase which is to be dominated by the hormone progesterone, secreted (along with estrogen) by the empty follicle in its new form, the corpus luteum.

During this phase, the endometrium thickens more and the uterine glands begin to produce their secretions of life-supporting substances for the nurture of a fertilized egg. If the egg becomes fertilized by sperm and then attach itself to the uterine lining, the corpus luteum secretion now becomes controlled by a different hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), manufactured by the placenta. If the egg is not fertilized, the secretions of the corpus luteum are still controlled by LH.

The higher levels of progesterone and estrogen produced by the corpus luteum now exert negative feedback (an inhibiting influence) on the production of LH and FSH, which begins to decrease. When the levels of LH drop, the corpus luteum begins to atrophy and stops producing estrogen and progesterone. The thickening of the endometrium can no longer be maintained and is therefore shed, along with some blood and mucus, in the form of the menstrual flow.

Very soon, however, the lowered hormone levels alert the hypothalamus to remedy the situation by producing LRH (luteinizing-releasing hormone) and FRH (follicle-releasing hormone), which in turn stimulate the pituitary production of LH and FSH, and the entire cycle begins again.

What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia  is an infection caused by viruses, bacteria, and fungi which affects the human lungs.  Pneumonia  is a contagious disease and it can spread in the air. By breathing other healthy people bring the germ into their lungs and most of them develop the illness. Sometimes there appear epidemics inside small collectivities.

In healthy individuals, the body is fighting with the bacteria to stop it infect the lungs. This response to the germ activity is called inflammation. An inflammation can occur in the alveoli and makes them fill with fluid, and so the lungs do not function properly any more, they do not give oxygen to the blood or take carbon dioxide from it like they use to do. This causes the breathing problems you have during  pneumonia . Other symptoms given by  pneumonia  are: fever, muscle aches, chest pain, and fatigue.

Symptoms like these can be given also by other diseases like acute bronchitis and only a thoracic X-ray can tell them apart.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the most frequent bacterium that leads to  pneumonia . Other bacteria involved in the turn up of  pneumonia  are: Haemophilus influenzae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Legionella pneumophila.

Pneumonia  can be caught from the air, if you inhale small particles of infected sputum or saliva from other people, or if the air conditioner was not cleaned properly. One can get  pneumonia  easier then other if it has a weakened immune system.

Doctors have classified  pneumonia  in two types: typical and atypical.

The typical  pneumonia  gives high grade fever, chills, and cough with yellow or greenish sputum, breathing problems, fatigue, and chest pains.

The atypical  pneumonia  gives you milder symptoms then the typical one and generally occurs if you have suffered from other illnesses during the last few weeks: low grade fewer, fatigue, abdominal pain, headaches, joint pain.

Pneumonia  generally occurs at those who have a weakened immune system, like children, old people and those who have other diseases (HIV, organ transplanted people, cancer, chemotherapy). Smoking, drinking alcohol, working in cold places are also factors of risk.

A check up is indicated when you have some of these symptoms, so that the doctor could fast apply the necessary treatment and spare you from other complications that might occur if you leave  pneumonia  untreated. Hospitalizing is necessary when you have severe symptoms of  pneumonia  and so, a drastic treatment must be applied, with bed rest, antibiotic drugs in order to cure the disease faster.

Balloon Twisting – The Pioneers

He may well have been dressed up as a clown just like the guy who had guests spellbound at your young son’s recent birthday party, but Twisters, as these balloon sculptors are known, come in many guises and can be found creating shapes from special modeling balloons in various fields of entertainment.

Balloon Twisting or Modeling techniques have developed to feature a range of highly complex twists and turns as well as accompanying jargon to describe the vital moves which are likely to have been learned from a video guide with easy-to-follow steps. But how did it all begin? Who were the early exponents of the Balloon Twisting arts? The origins, it seems, are hazy.

Emmy Award-winning producer/director Joseph Maar has been putting the case for his late father, Henry J Maar (1921-92), as the original Balloon Twister. He tells how the former vaudeville magician, whose stage identities included the Sultan of Balloons, had a childhood bout of pleurisy and was encouraged to blow up balloons to exercise his lungs when a patient in a Milwaukee TB sanatorium. During his magic career, Henry, a regular on Bozo’s Circus and other children’s TV favorites, decided the show must go on in Chicago with a Balloon Twisting act after his stage props were stolen from his car.

Another contender was Herman Bonnert, from Pennsylvania, who was seen in action at a 1939 magicians’ convention and is hailed in a Balloon Modeling manual as the “daddy of them all,” while Frank Zacone, of Ohio, perfected a balloon act that was popular in the 1940s. It is likely that all these gentlemen were pioneers of Balloon Twisting or Modeling – without the benefit of an instructional video – and the art has progressed to become an entertaining spectacle coloring the lives of young and old.
