Abdominal Migraine In Children

Often misdiagnosed, abdominal migraine in children is a relatively serious condition that entails pain in the abdomen, nausea, and vomiting- it’s certainly not necessary for headaches to be present. This condition is generally seen in children who are five to nine years of age, however it has also been rarely present in adults. It is difficult to diagnose despite affecting a million people worldwide, as it mirrors many other conditions and because children might have some difficulties explaining how they feel. No conclusive test has been created for this disorder present in children. It usually seems like the flue or perhaps appendicitis. Nonetheless, the symptoms reappear later in the month even though the child might be perfectly healthy otherwise. Generally, there is a genetic link; a family history of migraines might give a hint that the disorder is initially abdominal migraines in children.

Doctors first attempt to discard possible causes of a child’s abdominal pain or upset abdominal migraine in children. They often treat the children with anti-depressants as well as anti-anxiety medications. Some preventative drugs are beta-blockers (propranolo). Also prescribed is periactin, an antihistamine, as it affects serotonin activity. Other non-drug treatment options include biofeedback or acupuncture- both of which had good results for a number of children.

Abdominal migraine in children can have certain triggers such as a particular food or stress, which can sometimes be identified by affected individuals. This would certainly be helpful in preventing them. As soon as a diagnosis of this condition has been determined, it is crucial that treatment options as well as implementation procedures are thoroughly discussed with a doctor. If left untreated, the frequent pain and vomiting can lead to further complications. Difficult as it is to deal with as it interferes with daily life, school, and activities, abdominal migraine in children eventually develops into migraine headaches as adults. Needless to say, it is essential to start early and control the situation.

Hair Loss And Baldness

How does hair loss occur?

Hair loss or baldness is the state where the area which hair normally grows starts to decrease in count or gets thinner in size. The amount of average hair loss per day starts to increase by the day. Hair mass starts to get visible lesser and sometimes scalp can be noticed easily with the naked eye within a short distance.

A hair follicle is part of the skin that grows hair by packing old cells together. Attached to the follicle is a sebaceous gland, a tiny sebum-producing gland found everywhere except on the palms, lips and soles of the feet. Sebums are made from fats or simply oil and the debris of dead fat-producing cells. This is the oil that determines whether you should buy the ‘for oily or normal hair type’ shampoo. The thicker density of hair, the more sebaceous glands are found.

Stem cells are located at the area near the folicle and are principally responsible for the ongoing hair production during a process known as the Anagen stage. During this stage the cells divide rapidly and this when your hair starts to grow. The average growth rate of hair follicles on the scalp is .04 cm per day or about 1cm every 25 days. Hair loss occurs when the stem cells do not divide quick enough to produce that amount of hair within that time frame. Sufferers of hair loss might take a little more than 1 month to grow that 1cm of hair. The bulb shaped structure at the base of the follicle is called the papilla. The papilla is made up mainly of connective tissue that holds the whole hair shaft.

Why does hair loss occurs?

There are some men who keep their hair well into old age while others start to lose their hair at a tender age. Okay we do noticed that and so what? When men who starts to suffer from hair loss starts to ask why, most professionals will say the answer is in your genes. If our father has a bald head, the chances of us being another bald guy is very high. This inherited hair loss is very similar to the eye and skin colour. This genetic coding has been implanted right during the time we are being formed in the womb. The genes would make the hair follicles on our head be sensitive to the male hormones dihydrotestosterone (DHT). When puberty kicks in and these hormones are produced at light speed the hair follicle will start to produce less and less hair causing hair loss. This stage goes from thinning hair and receding hairline to complete baldness.

This theory is believed by most professionals to the main cause of hair loss or male pattern baldness. There are however other causes of hair loss not linked with hereditary reasons. Another reason is poor health which includes medication, stress levels and diets. A person who is sickly and ill and will affect the nutrients being absorbed by the body and released throughout it. Trichologists would be able to show that with the use of a microscope. After a bout of lets say flu, strands of hair will get crooked indicating the period where hair thinning occers due to loss of nutrients.

Temporary loss of hair can also occur in areas where sebaceous cysts are present for considerable duration; normally one to several weeks in length. This is the reason why we should shampoo our heads regularly.

Iron deficiency is also a common cause of thinning of the hair, though frank baldness is not usually seen.

Radiation to the scalp, as happens when radiotherapy is applied to the head for the treatment of certain cancers can cause baldness of the irradiated areas.

Some   mycotic  or fungal infections can also cause massive hair loss.

What treatments are available and effective for hair loss?

There are of course many products and treatments available out there in the market that claims to give you back the beautiful mane you can be proud of. There is also a secret you might want to know because many hair treatment companies do not want you to find out. This is because their multi million dollar profit business depends on you not knowing.

Although there are many products that do what they claimed however no one single type of treatment is suitable for all hair loss causes. It is better to find out what treatment is most suitable. Instead of starting to ask and search for treatments and cures for hair loss, perhaps you would like to adopt a different approach. One way would be to search for ways to improve hair growth rate. What are the available treatments that can help your hair follicles to start producing longer and thicker hair? Find out ways on how to prevent hair loss and methods to ensure the virility and strengthening of hair. There are many type of treatment that can help your hair follicles to kick start the engine again and produce back the amount of hair you always had until the dreaded hair loss scenario started.

If you are just looking for some hair oils and shampoo just to revitalize back your dull looking hair there is something you should take note about. Many commercialized shampoos contain hazardous chemicals. This not only causes skin and scalp irritation it could also lead to hair loss. It is always safer to read and check what goes into the mixture of the shampoo before buying. Organic or herbal based shampoos are always more often than not a safer bet.

Is hair loss a problem at all in the first place?

If you are feeling very confident about looking the way you are without any hair on your head I would really love to congratulate you. You are definitely one of the few guys I know who can really carry hair loss well. But if you are like any one of us bald headed guy, I would say it is a problem both physically as well as mentally. One of the causes of hair loss is called alopecia (al-oh-pee-she-uh) and that is a medical problem which is best to be treated.

Unless you are Vin Diesel, being bald will surely in certain ways affect the way confidence is projected. How important is it portraying the correct image especially at work and not to mention social life as well.

Hair Loss (Alopecia) – Causes And Treatments

Hair thinning or hair loss is common among women averaging hundred hair strands of loss in a day. That said, medical conditions or alopecia is more common among men. Causes for hair loss depend on many factors including physical environment, emotional stressors and even health conditions. Some conditions may resolve on their own however, some conditions may cause irreversible hair loss.

Causes

One of the major causes of hair thinning is due to the person’s genetic factors. People who have relatives that experience hair loss are likely to experience the condition as opposed to those who have fewer or no such relatives in their family branch. Aside from genetic factors, the natural aging process also results to slowing down of the body’s production resulting to the said condition. People who are into their late 30’s or early 40’s are likely to start experience the problem.

Hair has its own life cycle just like any part of our body. When physical stressors such as accidents, pregnancy or surgery is experienced by the body, the life cycle is interrupted causing disruption and noticeable hair loss of the patient. In this case, the loss is only temporary and as soon as the body recovers, the growth cycle is resumed.

Too much or too little of supplements can also cause one to lose hair. According to the AAD, too much of Vitamin A in the body can cause hair loss temporarily. Protein, which is essential to the development of cells and tissues is important as well, too little of which, can also affect hair production.

Hair loss can also be a sign of an underlying health problem. For patients that experience unusual amount of hair loss, they should consider consulting their family physician or a dermatologist to determine if it is normal or signs of health conditions such as anemia.

Treatments

Hair condition usually returns to its normal pattern once the body undergoes healing and recovers from the physical stressors and lifestyle modifications are accomplished. Some however may need to take medications to ensure hair regrowth. Minoxidil and Finasteride are two common medications available to treat hair loss.

Minoxidil is available as a topical treatment and commonly used to treat male-pattern baldness. The solution is FDA approved and directly applied to the affected area and should be left for at least four hours to ensure effectivity. The solution may not be as effective for people who are older or those that are already affected by baldness for a longer period.

Hair Loss in Women – Get the Relief You Need Now!

If you’ve looked all over the internet and you’re at your wit’s end, searching for some true help with hair loss in women, you’ve finally come to the right place. Speaking from my own personal experience, I know how frightening and disheartening it can be when you lose your hair. I felt pretty alone when it started. Thankfully, I found out that I was far from alone in my nightmare.

If you think you’re losing your hair because of something you’ve done, you are more than likely wrong. Most of us can’t help what is happening to us. It’s true that there are a few women who over process their hair and cause it to break off or fall out but for the most part, medical conditions, hormones and genetics are the root of our problem.

I was living in SW Florida, in the prime of my life when it started happening to me. I was in my early thirties, always tan and blonde — I really appreciated my looks. Unfortunately, society has put such a stigma on physical appearance that I fell victim to it. I woke up one day and my pillow was covered in hair. I really didn’t think about it much until I realized a few weeks later that this was happening every day. I realized that it wasn’t my husband’s hair clogging up the drain in the shower.

There I was, early thirties, blonde, tan, living the life in Florida. I enjoyed being outdoors and always wore a good SPF content in my hair and skin products. It turns out that had nothing to do with why I was or wasn’t losing my hair. In my case, hormones and medical conditions seem to be the bad guys. It really doesn’t matter, I guess, I know that it’s beyond my control to change it. That makes it hard.

I always made sure to use skin and hair products that had a decent SPF so that I wouldn’t grow old before my time or look older than I was. I never had great hair but I enjoyed being a blonde (even if I had to frost occasionally)and thought that my thin hair was just a curse of genetics.

I was afraid to wash my hair, I was afraid to put my sunglasses on top of my head. I started wondering if there was some way that I could lay on the pillow at night that was more conducive to keeping my hair in. I looked into some foams and creams that I found for sale at the drug store. The pharmacist warned me that these were products full of chemicals that I would have to continue using for the rest of my life if I wanted to see improvements, if I saw any at all. That wasn’t something I was interested in.

It certainly wasn’t something that I wanted to talk to anyone about, I was truly getting ashamed. I needed to figure out why I was losing it though, so I began searching online. Once I had weeded through the obvious sales scams, I started finding support groups and sites that told me that as women, hormones can play a big role in hair loss in women. So can genetics and some medical problems.

My friends all have long beautiful, thick hair. I felt like I had lost part of what made me feel feminine. I shouldn’t, it’s not what makes me who I am but I sure do like having hair on my head. After having gone through chemotherapy in the past, I really don’t treasure wearing hats and scarves again. What could I do? I kept looking for answers and getting sales pitches. I needed to find out why this was happening and what could be done about it. Internet research only went so far.

Then I found this site and I’ll tell you girls, things have been looking up. I’m starting to re-grow hair and you know what? I realize that I’m not stuck paying for a lifetime supply of something that doesn’t work. I am going to re-grow my hair and keep it and you can, too. Hair loss in women doesn’t have to be a life long battle, ladies. I’m glad you found this site, now you can have the relief I’ve gotten. Just remember, you are not alone and you’re not doomed to a life of hair loss in women.

Constant Buzzing in Ear – What It Is And The 4 Top Ways To Help Reduce It

If you are like the nearly 50 million Americans, then you might be suffering from a constant buzzing in the ear. The sound only seems to be heard by you even though you swear it is a sound outside. If you would like to know what the buzzing in the ear is and 4 ways to help you reduce it then read on.

The buzzing in the ear you are experiencing is often referred to as tinnitus, pronounced either “TIN-ih-tus” or “tih-NYE-tus”, in case you would like to ask your doctor about it.

Tinnitus is the term used to describe phantom sounds. Tinnitus is not a disease itself but rather a symptom of something wrong in the auditory system.

Since there is no actual external source of the sound, the sound itself is a phantom sound.

The brain detects signals in the auditory circuits which are then translated into the effect of hearing the buzzing sound in the ear

Although tinnitus itself cannot be cured there are certain things that you can do in order to reduce the effects of it. The 4 ways below help quieten the buzzing in the ear:

1. Stay away from loud noises as much as possible:

Noisy environment such as concerts and busy restaurants can cause the effects of tinnitus to worsen

2. Exercise:

Make sure to get the daily recommended amount of exercise to help reduce the buzzing in the ear

3. Reduce the amount of aspirin or aspirin related products that you consume

4. Control Blood pressure:

High blood pressure can make tinnitus more noticeable. It is important to make sure that certain factor such as hypertension, stress, alcohol and caffeine that increase blood pressure are monitored and under control

Bluey – Oldest Australian Cattle Dog on Record

The oldest dog on record was an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey.

Bluey lived to be almost 30 years old. That figure is in human years.

Dogs mature more rapidly than humans.

According to dog age experts, a one-year-old dog is really about age 15

in human equivalent years. The average life expectancy of The Australian

Cattle Dog is about 12-15 years.

Bluey was exceptional in that he outlived all the online life expectancy calculations. It may have been his diet or his genetics. The life expectancy of dogs increase dramatically because of better diets, better health care, and better living conditions.

Bluey was put to sleep on November 14, 1939 at the age of 29 years, 5 months.

The official AKC breed name for Bluey is “Australian Cattle Dog”. Sometimes these

dogs are called “heelers” because they were developed in Australia for controlling

cattle. The dogs were trained to herd cattle by nipping and biting at their heels.

Ancestors:

Bluey’s ancestors are Collies, Dalmatians, and the native Australian Dingo.

Bluey was heavier and more muscular than his ancestor the Border Collie.

The ACD have been working on Australian ranches since early in this century.

Bred to withstand extreme temperatures and the resourcefulness to forage to

feed itself like a wild dog made the ACD a very independent pet.

Physical Characteristics:

The coat is smooth with a double coat that it is resistant to the

elements. The breed sheds constantly and requires regular brushing.

Bluey and his breed are:

  • Sturdy and compact herding dogs
  • Well-developed muscles
  • Powerful, strong and agile

Size & Height:

The breed is medium in size

  • Weighs around 32-35 pounds
  • Height of 17-20 inches.

Personality:

Bluey and his breed are very good with the family children. This breed has a natural

protective instinct. They are very loyal dogs and are easy to train. These dogs need

to attend dog obedience classes. As a result of their dog obedience classes, they

will be absolutely obedient companions.

The ACD tends to show some aggressive tendencies toward noisy and strange

children that tend to tease the animal. These dogs will nip at the heels of people

and children because of their inherent “heeler” traits. They may be suspicious

of individuals as well as other dogs.

This breed needs regular exercise. A daily walk will keep the dog satisfied. This breed is

very easy to train. The dog wants to stay busy so engage the dog in stimulating

activities like “fetch” or the frisbee.

Give the Australian Cattle Dog a toy and he will play with the toy until the toy is totally destroyed. They will run and fetch sticks, balls and even cans. The breed is fun and playful and make excellent companions for children.

Physical Accommodations:

  • Requires a large open yard.
  • Barks at any change in environment
  • Needs attention.

When an Australian Cattle Dog is bored they tend to become destructive.

The dog will destroy any object left in his area. The ACD is a very

active dog and wants to run and jump in open areas.

Health Problems:

Genetic health problems may include the following:

  • Deafness
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (causes blindness)
  • Hip dysplasia,
  • Temperament abnormalities.
  • Deficit of attention disorders

Few ACD owners complain of loneliness or lack of companionship with this breed.

The ACD wants love and attention and will give these back ten fold. Bluey is no

longer with us but the ACD breed , Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most popular dogs in the United States and in the UK.

The Things I Hate About Jesus – Part 2

All my life, I’ve heard Christians repeating the phrases, “No other name

but the Name of Jesus” or “In the Name of Jesus.” I’ve used those

phrases a few million times myself. Then, one day, a woman handed me

a brochure stating that we Christians were all destined for Hell because,

after all, the name in which we had misplaced our trust was NOT “Jesus”

but “Yeshua!”

I argued, “What if I’m from Mexico and I cannot easily or accurately

pronounce the “Y” sound and wind up saying “JAY-shua.” Am I doomed

to Hell, or does God give Hispanics points for trying?” While she

pondered the thought, I continued, “What if I’m a deaf mute and can’t

say anything at all? Does God grade on a curve?” She had no answers,

just a puzzled expression.

Earlier this week, when I ministered by phone to people from a Muslim

country, whenever I used the name of Jesus, each time, the interpreter

was translating it as something else. Did it “count”?

When it comes to the things I hate about Jesus, His Name ranks right

near the top. No, it’s not the letters or the sounds they, make when we

put them together; it’s the religious bondage that has occurred BECAUSE

of that Name. The main perpetrators? English-speakers, of course.

For starters, the name of the babe born in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph

about 2000 years ago was not pronounced “JEE-zus.” (Did you hear those

bubbles burst?) Most scholars agree that the common language of the

entire region was Aramaic and that Jesus probably SPOKE Aramaic and

was most likely NAMED in Aramaic. The modern transliteration of His

Aramaic name into English has been written in many forms, including Yeshu’,

Eesho’ or Eshoo. There were, and still are, many different, and often

contradictory, dialects of Aramaic, making it impossible to know for certain

how His Name was actually pronounced way back when.

His Name in Hebrew is commonly transliterated into English as Yeshua,

which is a Hebrew contraction for the name Yehoshua meaning “Yah is

salvation” or “Yah saves.” Many Biblical references, such as Young’s

Analytical Concordance, have concluded that His Name was Yeshua.

Although the spelling “Iesus” or “Iesvs” was used in the King James version

of the New Testament from 1611 to 1628, by the year 1629 the King James

version began to adopt the spelling “Jesus.” Gradually, during the 17th

century, the name shifted from “Iesus” to the pronunciation “Jesus” that we

are still using today. Think about that…2,000 years of Christianity and we’ve

only been referring to Christ as “Jesus” for less than 400 years!

When Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life,” do we honestly think

He was referring to Himself – the flesh and blood human man named, Jesus?

When someone wants to talk to me, Michael Tummillo, they can use any

number of methods, WAYS, if you will. There’s the phone, email, US Mail,

or they can knock on the door of my home, NONE of which are actually me;

rather, they are each a way TO me. Likewise, Jesus – who actually referred

to Himself as “the Door” – was the WAY to the Father; an entrance.

Am I saying there are many ways to God? Perish the notion! But if we think

that one man going by one particular name was our in-road to Heaven simply

because He bore that name, and that we are saved or even empowered in

spiritual warfare simply because we USE that Name, we are ALL sadly

mistaken. In fact, the name “Jesus” back then was about as common as the

name “Bob” is today.

THE RICHNESS OF A COMMON RITUAL

Most Christians will close a prayer with the phrase “In Jesus’ Name, amen.”

When we do this, what are we saying?

Prayer “in Jesus’ Name” is taught in John 14:13-14, “And I will do whatever

you ask in My Name [however it was pronounced] so that the Son may bring

glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in My Name [whatever it

was], and I will do it.” Many Christians mistakenly believe that by saying “In

Jesus’ Name” at the end of a prayer results in God always granting what is

asked for. This is essentially treating the words “in Jesus’ Name” like Ali Baba

using the magic words, “Open sesame!”

Biblical scholars point out that the expression “in the name of” originally meant

“in the spirit of” or “in the manner of.” In other words, simply saying “in Jesus’

Name,” doesn’t mean that a particular prayer really IS in Jesus’ Name. Praying in

someone’s name means that we are saying, or agreeing with, the kinds of things

that person would say or do or those that He taught.

For instance, a prayer that is in keeping with Jesus’ teaching might begin by

acknowledging the plight of the poor. Jesus singled out the sick, the hungry,

the imprisoned, and told His disciples they would always find Him among what

He described as “the least of these members of My family.”

A prayer in Jesus’ Name might also include a prayer of blessing for that is in

keeping with His teaching to love our enemies and to bless those who curse us.

Praying in Jesus’ Name means, basically, praying what Jesus taught us to pray

by His example. “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we

ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears

us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of Him” (1 John 5:14-15).

Essentially, praying in Jesus’ Name is praying for things that will honor and glorify

the King and advance the Kingdom.

Saying “In Jesus’ Name” is meaningless. Genuinely praying in Jesus’ Name – from

the same Spirit of Jesus that resides within YOU – is what is important, not

attaching certain words to the end of a prayer. It is not the words that matter, but

the purpose behind the prayer. Praying for things that are in agreement with God’s

will is the essence of praying in Jesus’ Name.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

A friend of mine was doing missionary work in Africa many years ago. His team

encountered an elderly woman sitting in the desert upon a rock. When they asked

what she was doing, she told them she had been talking to the Great Spirit and He

told her white men were coming to tell her His Name. My friend, through a translator,

told her His Name was “Jesus.” She returned to the tribe and they had a great

celebration.

What if my friend had told her that God’s Name was “Howard” (as in “Howard be

thy name?”) Seriously, would it have mattered at all to Father God what they were

calling Him?

Now, let’s pretend you’re a young lady in Baghdad. You love God with all your heart

and are told, all your life, that His name is “Allah.” Armed with that knowledge, you

worship Him the best and only way you know how until the day you die. The same

applies to any scenario for any people group anywhere in the face of the Earth…

does it not?

Therefore, I guess I’ll go on calling Him “Jesus” – the man who was filled with the

Holy Spirit when He descended UPON Jesus like a dove, that same Spirit that raised

Him from the dead and now dwells within us, the Anointed One (Cristos, or Christ)

who, as the Anointed Head, still leads and directs His Body by means of Hs Spirit

which He gave to His followers.

Are YOU one of His disciples? Are YOU a follower of what’s His Name?

A Treatment For Stuttering

For those who have a speech impediment such as stuttering, they know how difficult life can be. If you have a problem with stuttering, then you know how your life is affected. You hate meeting new people because you constantly trip over your words and you know that deep down that person is laughing at you. You feel less intelligent because you can’t carry a conversation and it is embarrassing.

A lot of people assume that stuttering or stammering is just a childhood phase but it is not. It is an actual condition that a lot of people have to live with. If a child suffers from stuttering at a young age, it is going to carry over into their adult years. No matter how old or how young you are, stuttering affects you in the same way. You feel embarrassed and you just want to hide away from the world.

It doesn’t have to be that way. You can get a treatment for stuttering that wont cost you a lot of money. For instance, practice makes perfect. If you have to go in for a meeting or an interview, you should take the time to practice in front of a mirror. That way you can get a feeling for how the words should roll off of your tongue and you will be able to control the pace at which you speak. Another treatment for stuttering is to take a class, such as yoga to calm your nerves. When you are nervous, your stuttering worsens to the point where you can’t even speak. Calm your nerves and you will be able to get through your sentences.

Playing Bass With a Pick – Pick Style Bass Playing

A lot of bass players have talked about the wrong and right way to play the bass guitar, what way should we play? What sounds do we get and is it rite to play bass with a pick or plectrum?

Different people have many answers to this. Yes there are rite and wrong ways of playing bass, but however there is nothing wrong with playing the bass with a pick, there is nothing wrong playing bass with fingers and also slapping away on your favourite bass grooves.

Learn pick and finger style, to be a great bass player you should play both! However there is nothing wrong in playing the way you want to play bass, get your sound, and enjoy the style and technique that is for you. Playing with the pick is what I enjoyed and a style I have worked close with.

My article is focusing on the pick player, the pick style of bass playing! I myself am a pick style bass player, I love playing with a pick, love the sounds I can make and the great part of making people dance and enjoy the music! If you are a player starting out, a player who wants to know more about the pick or a player who never looks to the pick this is looking at the side of the pick style, the players, some history, how to play and things I have learnt in this style of many styles on the bass guitar…. the pick player!

Not to go on, but some brief history here. When the fender bass first ever came out it was made to be heard, made to be easy to carry not big like the upright bass, made to be electric and one thing made to be easy for guitarists to play so they could double up, get more work playing bass as well.

The electric bass was played with the thumb to start with; the guitarists came along and started to use their picks on the bass!

This started to become a technique with the electric bass player in the studios. The attack of the pick could be heard, it didn’t get lost and worked well with the studio equipment and sound at that time. It was a very precise sound with a high end and a good cut through sound. Session bassist Carol Kaye picked up the fender bass when a bassist didn’t turn up for a session. She put down her guitar and picked away on the fender bass. From then on she made pop music history. Take a listen to hits from the Beach Boys, the Doors and the original mission impossible theme tune.

Carol developed the flat wrist pick technique and the deep sound with the click. She has taught and published many books on this subject. For me Carol is an influence in the way to play with a pick. For me this was the start of pick playing, there are other players who played with the pick, on big hit records and also helped to shape this style of playing.

So what sounds can you get? Playing with a pick you can get a range of sounds depending on how you set your amp and bass up and the way you play! If you play with a pick properly and not sloppy you can get some great deep tones, tones with a click or if you wish a trebly sound.

Also where you play on the bass with the pick comes in to play.

Play near the neck you get a deeper sound, play near the bridge you get a more treble sound. Work and experiment playing in various parts around the bass’s pick ups to get different sounds.

Picks are for punks and heavy metal players with wristbands! I hear this all the time! Not really you can apply a pick to any style of music, any groove, play any song you desire if played and practiced well.

When I’ve been out recording or working live I was doing a show in the north of England. After the show someone came up and said ” I was amazed to see you played with a pick, the sound out front was so deep and great, but like fingers”. When doing a recording session I used the pick, one track I was asked to play very bright with the pick, the other tracks deeper sounding with the pick and a very slow acoustic number with the fingers…. that’s part of the job and knowing your chops…

Working with the pick. Good performance and pick technique is what is required to get the sounds and get the feel. A pick is very percussive where you can keep the rhythm of the wrist going when you are not playing a note, light muting is good for keeping a tight feel and sound! Always keep the wrist flat and keep it on the body of the bass, like you are hugging the bass! Use your wrist and don’t move your whole arm….

Like alternate fingering with fingers it’s important to play down – up picking.

Down-up-down-up-down-up…. This makes your picking clean and constant witch is very important. DOWN the pick goes to the floor, UP the pick comes up to you. I have seen some players who just use down picking, great if your Jason Newstead and you will use down picking on slower more ballad type songs. Practice is the key to keeping your picking strong and feeling good. Mute the left hand on the stings and just play away with the pick different rhythms, up and down stokes. I still do this every day to keep on top of my pick style.

Holding the pick is important! I have seen many players holding the pick in different ways. The way I hold the pick is between the thumb, first finger and the second finger. Now some bassists play with just the thumb and first finger. I find I have more grip and control using three fingers. Also there is open and closed hand position. Open you can let the fingers hand open and closed you close up the fingers like a fist. I prefer using the close fist and hand holding the pick with three fingers. I get a better attack with the pick and feel. I feel more in control playing this way. (See photo section). Don’t tense up the hand, keep it relaxed and in control.

Two types of picking are scratch picking where you can get a scratchy sound by using the edge of the pick and digging in the string more and flat-picking where you are flat on the string. It depends on what sounds you want to get and what songs you are working on. Practice really digging in the stings to playing with more light and shade from heavy to lighter picking. It all works well learning the different way with the pick and opens up more tones and sounds.

Another important part of playing with a pick and I learnt this in the early days, stick to the same pick. You want to get a sound of your own, the rite sound! If you use different picks, different gauges and weights of picks or just nick picks of the guitarist that are flimsy or the wrong size before a gig, it wont work.

I used to change picks all the time. The sound changed, some picks were too heavy, had no grip and I struggled.

I tried out lots of different picks and plectrums, gauges, thickness until I found what worked for me! I have stuck to the same pick, same size, good grip and same gauge. I find a 1mm tortex blue pick works great for me as I am not a heavy pick player, although everyone is different, so find what works for you and feels good. Stick with the same type of pick!

Well, we have had a brief insight in to playing and performing bass with a pick and looking at the bass pick style.

I hope it helps if you are playing bass with a pick, wanting to learn pick style as another style along with finger style, wanted more info about playing with a pick or just interested in the bass guitar and the way its played or simply what is bass pick playing.

Assistive Listening Devices

What is an assistive listening device? It is a device used to assist people hear better in different situations. For instance, an assistive listening device may be used to aid someone to better hear a speech delivered through a Public Address system or even to hear the sound from a television better. An audio transmitter is used to isolate the required sound from any noise in the surrounding area and then relays the sound usually (through a wireless radio frequency) to a small receiver in the listener’s possession.

The receiver then finally transmits the sound to the listener’s ear through either a looped cord or direct audio input. An assistive listening is not a hearing aid although it can be used in conjunction with one. The goal is to reduce the strain that one would otherwise experience when listening to someone either from a distance or in an environment where there are other competing sounds.

There are different types of assistive listening device that one can choose from. PFM (Personal Frequency Modulation) systems have start similarities to a small radios and operate on specific transmission frequencies. The frequencies in the US for instance are assigned by the regulator, the Federeal Communications Commission.

PFMs are particularly useful when one is trying to listen to a book reading, a lecture, religious meetings or any gathering held in a public place such as a park. In more sophisticated PFM setups, the transmitter is actually setup as part and parcel of the sound system. In such settings, each person is then assigned a receiver.

A second type of assistive listening device are infrared enabled. These are usually used in smaller enclosed spaces such as the home (to listen to television or home video sound). However, it can be used in the outdoors like the PFM. The infrared assistive listening device also allows you to alter the volume to the level that best suits you.

Then there is the Induction Loop System which are more commonly used in large group settings. Government buildings and hospitals are two places you are likely to encounter the ILS assistive devices. This system works using a wire which is permanently installed (often under the floor).

It is then connected to a microphone through a speaker. When you speak into the microphone, an electromagnetic field is created in that room. If you then turn the receiver to the setting ‘T’, you will pick up the signal and can then alter the volume through to your satisfaction.

Finally, there is the one-to-one assistive listening device. As the name suggests, these are used when you want to hear one person specifically such as when someone is delivering a speech at a convention. The method of operation is simple: the person speaking is given a microphone and as they speak, the sound is amplified and sent straight to your receiver.

Each type of device has its merit and one must assess it against the event or occasion it is meant to be used in before finally making your decision.

Glass of Beer

(Chapter Story, ‘The Drinking Room’)

Jerry fills the glass clutching it, talks, remembers, dreams, thinks, wishes, watches, going in a circle around the table, ends back up looking at his glass, into his glass, the foam within the glass, his mouth unknowingly opens, the bubbles and foam are disappearing, he watching them dissolve, as if it was magic. It is a mustered-seed yellow liquid, cold beer, the same color of his pee he thinks. He puts the glass to his lips, opens up his mouth his throat, his eyes wide open, and pours it down.

He now picks up a cigarette out of an ashtray he had put down, a while ago, a Camel’s, non-filter, relights it, sucks in hard to get the cigarette hot as a pistol, it is red hot on the tip, he now leans over to pick up a card from the stacked deck, in the middle of the table, a cat, yellow as the beer, runs by, it belongs to the house, was a stray cat once upon a time-was I say: was…was…, now the kids adopted it.

“Lor…d…y…!” says Jerry, “what kind of cards are these?” he questions. He pushes his eyebrows up with some hidden muscles seemingly coming out of his eyelids; his holes in his nose-nostrils suck in air as if he’s been running, he’s overweight by a hundred pounds, well, almost a hundred pounds, take or give twenty, he sounds like he’s drowning.

Wistfully, and annoyingly, he rotates his head right to left, a fly is circling his head, he can hear its buzzing it wants to settle on his ear, and wants to land on his nose or eyelash or forehead, his forearms will do nicely also-he shakes his left elbow, smiles at the others, sips his glass of beer some-you can hear the suction, Jim is having a coughing spell,

“Put on a sweater,” he says, “Betty, go and see if you can fine him one.”

“It’s nothing,” Jim says, “just the damn damp weather, I’ll get over it, I always do, don’t bother Betty.”

“The damn damp weather” Ace’s voice   stammers  repeating Jim’s statement as if soothing: his voice always defeated.

Jim looks at Ace, his armpits smell, the music on the radio grows quiet and then revives, everyone is square mouthed, Bobby Vee’s hit, ‘Take Good Care of my Baby’ is being played and everyone’s humming to it, a 1961 hit; then comes one Evens likes: ‘More Than I Can Say,’ and he stops everything to listen to it, “Shoo…” he says to everyone (perhaps Vee’s most celebrated international song at the time).

“Got some good worms for fishing,” says Jim, as if lacking for something to say.

“Can’t believe it,” comments Jerry, looking at his cards.

The table now rafts with bottles.

A thick smell of tobacco, beer, human skin and bad armpit odors circulates around the kitchen table, mixed with chili smells which tributaries of smells lead out of the kitchen, circulating warmly throughout the kitchen, the drinking room, and into the living room and dinning rooms. The stench being least noticed the lower order of smells, the drunker everyone gets.

There is some laughter, drunken roars, and eyes dimming. They talk, become silent, empty, full, sometimes they all talk at once and nobody can be heard.

Bill has a little headache, ‘I should go home,’ he thinks. Then he thinks, ‘I’m acting ridiculous.’

Ace with his long legs stands up, staggers, wants to stretch them, Evens grabs him holds onto him, supports him until he gets his balance back. He goes forward around the table, step by step, looks out the window, gets some fresh air, his brain is clearing.

Jerry, he now picks up a cigarette out of an ashtray he had put down, a while ago, a Camel’s…

Ace straightens up-pulls out a handkerchief, blows his nose, wipes his forehead with the other side; for a few seconds he’s forgotten he has left his false teeth at home, you can see his red gums, he is back and ready to select a new card, still playing ‘Hearts’.

The cat is licking Aces shoes, he kicks him away, the cat whimpers, while Ace grabs his bottle of beer by the neck as if it’s the annoying cat, or a giraffe, and with two gulps drinks three-fourths of the bottle of beer down.

A dung heap of cigarettes butts are in the ashtray, the ashtray is really a simple soup bowl, low sides to it.

Betty notices a bulge in Aces shirt pocket when he had pulled out his handkerchief, figuring unconsciously, that it was a pack of cigarettes hidden, because he’s been begging cigarettes off everyone else all afternoon, in place of having to roll his, but they are not cigarettes.

By the looks of things, you’d think everyone there was an alcoholic; on the other hand, those that aren’t my very well possibly become one in the near future-to include Betty.

Betty leans her back against the side window behind Jerry. Puts her hands on Jerry’s shoulder, strokes his cold neck, a seeping coldness is coming from under the windowsill. She closes her eyes as if to catch a moment’s idleness, and refresh her stamina.

Out on Jackson Street, running north and south, you can hear engines, whistles from the steel company nearby, tires on the wet road, horns from cars, it is a noisy street this day. You can hear fleeting voices as people walk by on the sidewalk.

Jerry looks out the window over Bill’s shoulder, into the cemetery across the street, there is a grayness starting to envelope it.

Betty moves out into the living room, and kisses Jerry’s neck before her move. The cat has urinated on one of the rugs; you can hear Betty scolding her. Jerry finishes his glass of beer pours the contents of the bottle-what is left of it-into the glass, the foam is all out of it, but it fills the glass up halfway.

Jerry fills his glass back up with bottle of beer clutching it, talks, remembers, dreams, thinks, wishes, watches, going in a circle around the table…

Evens had drifted off; it was as if he was listening to the drizzling of the rain. Door slams-it is a screened in-door, it is next door, Jim’s house, he and his wife Bubbles live with Jim’s mother. Jerry raised his head, “It’s ma,” he says. His heavy hands fall back onto the table.

Jim gets up to use the phone in the other room, “Ma, tell Bubbles I’ll be along shortly, I’m playing cards over at Jerry’s.”

“Yah, I can see the back of you,” she says.

“Let’s not waist any time,” says Jim, “Let’s play for money?”

Nobody responds it is as if it was a statement, not a question.

Mrs. Hino is wearing a blue tunic like blouse, long in sheath that hides her body form, her shoulders to her ankles, and high rubber boots, covering her feet and ankles, a scarf folded twice around her neck; her hands to her side, her head low, fumbling with the keys, barely revealing a movement of her shoulders. A slight grimace, her nose a little dilated from the cold. The leafless tree to the side of her has tentacle branches, and very high peaks. She is sneezing…about to open the main inside door to the house…

Evens, has drifted off, a thin fuzz covers his reality, and is divided between the table and his small apartment room: Sandy is wearing a tattered iliac blouse, sticking to her breasts, tied around her waist, and her knees bare, her cheekbones are rosy, a tattoo on her thigh, a full expression in some peaceful manner, eyes yellow like a cats, lions, restless vibrations, her head is shaved, strange he feels, because noting seems real, but he is the pilot here, some kind of pilot, if only someone could explain to him, if he could understand (he could only hear a few words seeping, a grunt and waving of arms from those around him)…

Jerry fills the glass clutching it, talks, remembers, dreams, thinks, wishes, watches, going in a circle motion with his eyes around the table…

“Come on Evens, let’s play,” says Ace, looking at him.

“Again, say it again,” said Bill, he fell to sleep.

At that, Evens woke up.

“It looked like you were having a tumble with that Sandy or was it the Shadow?” Jerry asks Evens, licking his lips, everyone dying of laughter.

“They always like to be begged, don’t they,” comments Evens.

The telephone rings, and Nancy answers it, it is for her.

“Who was that?” asked Betty.

“Just a friend,” says Nancy. And before Betty could say another word, Jerry speaks up, as if knowing there might be a tug-of-war, “She’s at a foolish age, you have to know how to let go, unless you want to fight with her, she’ll just get all the more stubborn.”

At that, she lets it be.

Jim drinks down the last of his yellow liquid in his glass, looks at Jerry, sees some gray hairs, he fills the glasses of everyone’s up with a fresh cold bottle of beer, to include his, tops it off with mustered-seed yellow, giving it new foam and life, Ace drinks closing his eyes, everyone is taking long swigs of beer, wiping the sweat off with their hands, the kitchen is hot, he tells Ace, to go and buy more beer, another two cases, no, he changes his mind-figuring he might not come back, Bill goes. Jerry is getting a little drunk; he looks at Jim as if Jim is getting deformed ears, big ears as like Dumbo: “Funny what alcohol does to yaw,” he comments.

“Ace,” says Jerry, “it looks like you’re getting craters on your nose,” everyone laughs.

“Things happen,” Ace says, taking it seriously, a little confused, then laughs with everyone.

Jerry puts the glass to his lips, opens up his mouth his throat, his eyes wide open, and pours it down, beer and foam and per near a fly, he hears it buzzing, coughs up the beer, the fly was on the rim of the glass, “Damn thing,” he yells. Now cautiously imploring Betty to get a flyswatter and get that critter before he has a heart attack; then came on Gene Pitney’s ‘Mecca’ and after that ‘Twenty four Hours from Tulsa,’ songs everyone started humming to or tapping their feet to, and Evens doing both.

Feet and socks, and armpits odors-sweat odors, swirling about and chili smells biting everyone’s nostrils-everyone calling everyone buddy this and buddy that, an inner whirlwind of buddy talk. The music blasting now; it must be Bobby Vee day and Gene Pitney day, the song: “Rubber Ball,” is now being played on the radio, his number one hit.

‘My brother likes Jack Scott,” says Evens: a statement more than a question, no one takes notice to his remark, as they pick up cards from the middle of the table, checking their hands out.

8 Rules for Proper Business Communication

In today’s business environment, we rely more and more on technology to communicate with one another. Our ability to communicate has been greatly enhanced, and our choices for communication media are ever expanding. From cellular telephones, to Email, fax machines to Palm Pilots, communication devices are linked to the way we do business now more than ever before. This new technology has had many positive benefits for the business world. Unfortunately, since the range of options has expanded at such a quick rate, many people seem to be unaware of how best to use the devices they now have. It is essential to develop an awareness of how technology should best be used to avoid negative outcomes for employees and the workplace in general.

In the last two decades, communications technology in the United States has developed at an extremely rapid rate. Twenty years ago, people did not even know what “Email” was. Now, phrases like “IM me” or “Google it” are commonplace, household terms that seem inseparable from our personal or business lives. But most people don’t know how to properly use these new advances. Take Email for example, misuse of this medium has led to the demise of executives such as Credit Suisse First Boston tech banker Frank Quattrone, Merrill Lynch & Co. analyst Henry M. Blodgett, as well as senior executives from Enron.

The problem with some individuals is that they don’t realize that electronic communications can be and often are permanent. Even text messages can be stored and retrieved by the server processing them. But for most people, it’s not a matter of not realizing that sensitive, potentially career ruining information should not be sent willy-nilly, it’s just that they don’t know how to use electronic communication in a polite way. Just because we have these devices, does not grant us license to substitute rudeness for manners. There is a new code of electronic manners in using telephones, PDAs, laptop computers, faxes, and so on.

Here are 8 guidelines for communicating in an effective, respectful manner:

1. Don’t use your cell phone at inappropriate times, in inappropriate places, or in an inappropriate way. This invades others’ privacy and disrupts their ability to concentrate.

2. Don’t encroach on others’ personal space when using your laptop computer. There are appropriate times/places to connect and use your laptop and there are times when it is not appropriate.

3. Turn off your beeper and/or cell phone whenever you are in a situation where it could be distracting.

4. Don’t send lengthy faxes unless you first call the individual or business to ensure that it’s a good time

5. Only use the speaker phone when necessary, and always make sure the person you are talking to does not mind.

6. Never send e-mail that contains inappropriate or sensitive material (as some executives have learned the hard way).

7. Consider calling a person who you usually communicate with by e-mail from time to time to establish a more personal contact.

8. Avoid calling, paging, or faxing people at home or after hours, unless it is vital that you do so.

In today’s business world, we use technology to communicate with one another like never before. Communication has been greatly enhanced, and so have our options of how and when to communicate. This new technology has primarily been a good thing for the business world. However, many people seem unaware of how best to communicate in this modern age. Active awareness and following some type of guide to communication etiquette is essential for all people in today’s business world.

How To Pay For Cosmetology School

Many people dream of working in the beauty industry but fear that the cost of tuition and supplies may be too steep. It is true that cosmetology school can be pricey, but that should not keep any prospective student from achieving their dreams. There are many ways of going about paying for the education that they need to be successful.

In most cases, a cosmetology school will offer financial aid to students who qualify for it. This is often determined by which student has the greatest need. This will typically be decided after reviewing the student’s finances, including the amount of support that they are able to receive from their family towards tuition.

There are also many scholarships available to students who wish to attend beauty school. They may be offered by community groups, religious organizations or even by the high school that a student attended. In order to be eligible for the scholarships, students must show a great deal of skill in cosmetology, as well as excellent grades in high school.

If a student has exhausted all other options, they may want to consider taking out a private loan to finance their education. Although nobody wants to be in unnecessary debt, it is always wise for someone to invest in their education. They will be able to pay the loan back when they have a successful and lucrative career as a cosmetologist.

Paying for cosmetology school can be a challenge, but it is something that any student should be able to do. If they meet the requirements, they may be able to get financial aid or be eligible for a scholarship. If not, there is always the option of taking out a private loan. Although many people do not like the idea of putting themselves in debt, they are making a wise investment in their future.

Scholarly Therapy – Physical Therapy Scholarships

Times are rough these days. Jobs are scarce and money is getting harder and harder to earn with each passing day. For those born into well off families, the problem of education isn’t lacking. Yet for those not so well off, obtaining an education is a struggle. A lot of deserving people don’t get to live up their full potential because of financial woes, but thanks to a growing number of organizations looking to provide scholarships to deserving students, the future looks bright. Physical therapy scholarships are now available almost everywhere for those wanting to study the discipline but lack the funds to do so. A good place to hunt for these physical therapy scholarships is the web.

One of these institutions that give out scholarships to those deserving is the American Physical Therapy Association. Checking out brochures and the official APTA website will provide you with all the details concerning their scholarship programs. There are also a number of outside scholarship opportunities available. Canvassing them all and looking for what offers the best for its students may prove to be a daunting task, but a task well worth it. Make sure that all the criteria fit well with you in order to be able to choose a scholarship program that is right for you.

Physical therapy scholarships are rampant for those deserving students, but be well aware that for all things good, something bad always shadows it. Be careful in who to trust, and don’t send money to dubious scholarship programs unless you are fully sure that they are accredited. A lot of students fall victim to these bogus programs that offer physical therapy scholarships, and all have tales of woe. Usually, students fall prey to these con artists because of packages being offered that are too good to be true. Remember, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. By following this mantra, you’ll at least be better safe than sorry. Ask a lot of questions especially regarding the programs’ legitimacy. Legitimate programs of physical therapy scholarships don’t mind answering questions and most will even be pleased to answer them all. If the answers they give are inconsistent or at least give off a vibe that their answers are evasive, cut them loose and find other programs. Better safe than sorry.

Yet after all the pitfalls that may arise and you still come out unscathed, you will be rewarded with quality education through a physical therapy scholarship that genuinely helps those in need, giving a chance for all those who need it.

Healthy Dieting: Eat 5 Meals a Day and Lose Weight!

A lot of fad  diets  rely on depriving the body of food, but if you look at creatures in nature you will see that you need to eat regularly for  healthy   dieting .

While you need to eat regularly you need to know about portion size in relation to your body for  healthy   dieting  and this is relationship is explained below.

Understand the concepts of regular eating and portion control and you can enjoy  healthy   dieting , lose weight and never feel hungry.

Let’s look at these concepts in more detail.

3 meals a day is a man made concept

If you look at  healthy  eating three meals a day (or less on many  diets ) is not ideal, you should be eating five meals a day.

Some simple examples from nature will illustrate this point.

Bears are creatures that eat huge meals infrequently to sustain them. They carry a lot of body fat to feed them over time i.e they are binge eaters.

If you look at animals such as dear, elk and horses they graze and have similar proportion of body fat to humans.

These animals are eating every few hours, our ancient ancestors did and you should to for  healthy   dieting .

There are reasons why you should, that are linked to our body and how it functions.

By eating frequently you achieve the following:

1. Eating frequently prevents hunger pangs and curbs over eating.

2. Eating more often keeps your metabolism working quickly so you burn calories more efficiently.

3. Food is also absorbed more efficiently and quickly when we eat regularly.

In affect you will feel healthier and have more energy as you will be using your metabolism as nature intended.

This is what  healthy   dieting  is all about:

Creating the ultimate conditions to burn fat, in the most efficient way and never feeling hungry.

OK I can eat 5 meals a day how much can I eat?

Here you need to know about portion control.

Eating five times a day means you can eat enough to satisfy you, but its important to know how much you can eat in relation to your body size and there is a very easy way of doing this.

You can count calories, but let’s be frank who has the time or inclination to do this?

The trick is to use your hand.

A portion should be the size of your fist or the size of your palm.

Want a baked potato?

Get one the size of your fist

Want some fish?

Get a portion the size of your palm

Eat naturally for  healthy   dieting

Now you need to eat quality fat carbohydrate and protein.

The trick here is to eat “naturally from the earth” and avoid additives and sugar.

For example, a meal should contain the three groups how about Salmon, brown rice and veagatbles? Or maybe a baked potato Turkey and vegetables?

Follow the above and you can eat 5 meals a day.

If you are in a hurry make your other two meals up before hand, some nice tasty salads (go easy on the dressing) some rice and fish.

Other  healthy   dieting  tricks

Make sure you eat breakfast (the most important meal of the day) and get as much fibre as you can, as a lot of it is not absorbed and passes through the body. It also makes you feel full and has generally less calories than other foods.

The other trick is to drink lots of water ice cold. Many hunger pangs are simply thirst pangs, so get plenty of water by drinking it ice cold.

Your body has to heat it to body temperature and you will burn 400 calories a week!

Now you have done the above you will feel healthy and control your weight as nature intended.

Don’t forget a bit of exercise and by this we don’t mean hours in the gym. Simply do some brisk walking don’t take the lift try and walk up the stairs etc

Add in some swimming or cycling twice a week, its not to hard and remember, we were not born to just sit around were active beings.

 Healthy   dieting  made simple

The above  diet  tips will help you burn fat efficiently, eat as your supposed to, feel  healthier  and fitter which is what  healthy   dieting  is all about.

Simply think about how we evolved through time and you will see the logic of the above.
