Continuing Your Education With Cosmetology Schools

Furthering your education beyond high school is a smart decision in these times and the choice of going to beauty or  cosmetology  school is a smart one. There are many great advantages to choosing and following the career path of  cosmetology  school which can lead to a lucrative future. Education beyond that gained in high school is always beneficial, no matter what field it is in. Post secondary education and training will allow you more career choices and more opportunity for advancement in your chosen field and this is true in  cosmetology . According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, “Median hourly wages in May 2008 for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists, including tips and commission, were $11.13.” It was also reported that the top margin of workers make more than $20.41 per hour. While tips cannot necessarily be counted on, they can be reasonably expected under most circumstances. The average figures listed above take this into account.

Once you have chosen that going to beauty or  cosmetology  school is for you, choosing which one is right would be the next step. Not ever school is created equal. Beauty schools tend to solely focus on hair cutting styling and processing, while  cosmetology  schools host an array of different skills. If you choose to go to a  cosmetology  school you will learn the skills used in hair cutting, chemical process and styling, but you will also have a other skills such as manicures, facials, massage, and waxing. Having the additional skills gained at  cosmetology  school usually results in a higher pay once you get out of school.

When choosing what school to go to, whether you choose a beauty or  cosmetology  school, it is important that you choose a school that is the right fit for you. To help you in selecting the right school for yourself be sure to go into the school and interview the current instructors and see if you like their teaching style and philosophies. See if you can speak with some of the current students to get a feeling for how they like what they are learning in their classes and how they feel the class load is. Also, see if you can find any graduates from the school to see how successful they have become in the real world. The ability to transfer the skills taught at the school to an actual paying position will eventually play a key role.

The Healing Power of Art Therapy

Art  therapy  is a form of psychotherapy where the individual engages in creative self-expression to decrease pain, gain insight, and tap into one’s thoughts, feelings and emotions–it is not concerned with how artistic or how well a person can draw or paint or work with clay. It is about the process of self-expression and not the product. It is about getting feelings out in a creative manner without the filter of words. When working with imagery, the client is accessing the right brain, the part of the brain where emotions reside–not the analytical left brain. Though clients can talk about the meaning the art has for them and any reactions they experience, as an art therapist, I do not assume to know what a client’s art means nor do I interpret their work. I do maintain a sense of curiosity about their art and might ask a question such as, “Tell me about this drawing?”, or “What might this image be feeling?” I leave interpretation up to the client.

Art  therapy  is used in hospitals, clinics, rehab facilitites, schools, private practice and in senior centers. It is used with children, teens and adults, older adults and with families and couples. It is used to promote and enhance physical, emotional and mental health by using creative expression. Taking part in artmaking helps decrease anxiety, stress, depression and increase self-awareness, self-esteem, relationship difficulties and behavior and developmental delays while providing insight into one’s life. I explain that art  therapy  is not an art class though the process might inspire a person to pick up pastels and draw on their own. Children gravitate towards the use of art and approach creativity with imagination and freedom and play without judgment or self-criticism. They enjoy experimenting with new art materials and soon discover creative tools to handle difficult emotions such as anger. Art  therapy  is beneficial in helping children diagnosed with ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, fear, and the challenges of living with a chronic illness. As we age, we begin to seek perfection in ourselves and, through creative expression, clients can learn to silence the voice of the internal critic and become more self-aware of their negative thoughts and irrational beliefs. I invite clients to let the page hold the feeling(s) where we can explore them together. I suggest to clients that, instead of letting the feeling fester inside of them, why not allow the art to be the container.

If a client has a reaction to an art piece, I provide a safe place to explore the feelings that surface. Many adults are surprised how art can facilitate the expression of feelings and emotions easier and quicker than traditional talk  therapy . I explain that when we look at an image of a loved one or a visual image of a place that we have strong feelings for, we many times experience a physical response. It is the same when we create expressive art and images. In the last few years, scientific research has discovered how fear-based emotions, negative thoughts and suppressed feelings can trigger physiological stress on the body in turn directly affecting the immune system. As we begin to heal emotional wounds, the body begins to heal also. One of the goals I have when working with a client is for them to find balance between the right and the left brain. This way, not residing completely in the emotional brain or living stictly in the analytical brain. Through the creative process, I assist baby-boomers better move through life transitions and discover acceptance and peace with the aging process.

Art  therapy  is a master’s level profession with training in psychology and visual arts. When seeking an art therapist, it is important to work with someone who is trained in the field of art  therapy  or expressive arts. Many therapists claim to use art, though they are not trained specifically in art  therapy . When asked how I work, I explain that I invite clients to take part in an art directive. For instance, I might ask, “What might that anger look like if you put it down on paper?” “What color, shape, or size might it be?” I might suggest that they use their nondominant hand to draw or that they create an image out of clay that represents how they feel that day. Even the simple act of doodling can provide a relaxing and contemplative experience. For people that suffer from anxiety, I many times recommend keeping a doodle journal with them. This way, when they begin to experience worry or anxiousness, they can doodle. If a client feels uncomfortable drawing, I offer alternative art forms, such as collage using magazine cutouts.

During the artmaking process, I recommend to the client that they work without talking in this way the nonverbal right brain is dominant allowing easier access to emotions. I leave time to discuss the artmaking and time for any other reflection the client might have. I keep the art in a safe place or, if the client wishes, they can bring their art home with them. I provide all of the art materials including pastels, markers, crayons, colored pencils, paint, collage materials, clay and paper. Where the imagination is concerned, the items we can work with appears endless. Children love working with pipe cleaners popsicle sticks and “Model Magic” as these objects provide a tactile experience for them. For young and old, the practice of art  therapy  is a safe place where feelings and imagination meet for both young and old.

If you have questions about the practice of art  therapy  or are interested in scheduling an appointment, please feel free to contact me at 310-922-3957. More information about art  therapy  can also be found on the website of the American Associations of Art  Therapy  (

Healthy Eating Diets – Plan a Healthy Diet

Are you having a hard time following your diet plan? Do your diet plans constantly fail? Do you want your diet plan to finally work? You have to accept the fact that losing weight really takes time and there are just no short cuts to achieve weight loss. Well, here are ten rules that will make you stick to your diet for good.

Rule 1: Healthy eating diets should be realistic

Some people go on diets that are just not possible to stick with for a longtime. Some people would even starve themselves for days or weeks to lose weight fast and they do! But not for long because they get the weight back and more often than not, they even put on more weight than they have lost. When you are on this kind of diet, you are not helping yourself.

Rule 2: Healthy eating diets mean eating in moderation

You know that too much of a good thing can also be bad for you right? Well that rule also applies in healthy eating. Sure they are healthy, but if you eat too much of them, then you might not see better results than you could should you have eaten in moderation.

Rule 3: Healthy eating diets are based on how you eat

Always remember that eating should be something that you enjoy. You can’t just eat for the sake of eating. You have to savor the flavor and enjoy each and every bite. If you eat slowly your body will have time to realize that you are already full and you are no longer hungry.

Rule 4: Healthy eating diets include fruits and vegetables

This should not be new to you. Of course eating fruits and vegetables are essential to a healthy and sexy body.

Rule 5: Healthy eating diets include healthy carbs and whole grains

This is another fact that you should already know by now. But if you are still eating refined bread or snacks that are high in starch and sugar then it is time for you to change those to whole wheat or grain.

Rule 6: Healthy eating diets include healthy fats

It is not true that you should never consume meals that contain fat. You just have to know what kind of fat is good. You can use virgin coconut oil when you need to fry something. You can also use olive oil on your salad instead of those fatty dressings.

Rule 7: Healthy eating diets mean eating protein in moderation

Protein is not only found in beef, pork or chicken. You can also get protein from beans, nuts, seeds, peas, tofu, other soy products, fresh fish, turkey and eggs. The key to a healthy diet is to reduce your portions of protein. Most people eat too much protein thinking that this will make them leaner and healthier. The truth is that eating too much protein can damage your liver and kidneys.

Rule 8: Healthy eating diets include calcium

Drinking milk is healthy but if you are lactose intolerant. You can just go for soy milk instead. Whichever is more comfortable for you is fine as long as you give yourself enough calcium every day.

Rule 9: Healthy eating diets limit sugar and salt

As much as possible try to reduce your sugar and salt intake. To do this, try to avoid sauces, condiments and other seasonings that are not necessary. This will definitely make you healthier.

Rule 10: Healthy eating diets are planned ahead

Now the last rule should be easy. The only thing that you need to do is to create a diet plan for the whole week and make sure that you stick to it for good! Good Luck!

Digital Doctor

Steve Lohr in “The New York Times” refers Dr. David Blumenthal, statement as; “the evidence worldwide suggests that electronic health records are seen as part of the long-term answer to improving care and controlling costs.”

The researchers observed that overall, 44 percent of physicians have implemented EHRs and 56 percent still use paper based records. The survey reports also revealed that appropriate use of electronic health record systems have brought great improvement in health sector by redefining the medical practices’ usual routines.

Furthermore, the condition, for the use of specific measures, to have the CMS incentives has played a great role in the appropriate use of Electronic Health Record System.

Few years ago, the worst part of a visit to a doctor was to wait in a reception room among the other sick patients. The new healthcare innovations have streamlined it, and now it is far easier to make patients’ advanced appointments and they can know how much time the doctor may take before clearing up into a waiting room chair.

Electronic Health Record has emerged as a good time management tool in multiple ways e.g. by giving patients, an access to their online medical records through patient portal or patient health record system. The PHR (Patient Health Record) has reduced a huge number of query calls to practices. They can now access their basic information, family history, medications, allergies, immunizations, diagnosis and lab results directly. Each patient is given a unique ID by the practice which enables the patient to access the records by signing in to the system.

On the other hand, the physicians are also looking for EHRs for a way to save time and money. The shift from paper based to digital system has been proved economical with less use of paper, less staff and availability of patient records with few clicks. In addition, the features like vitals, problems, medication history, allergies, patient charting, Lab Results, family history, social history have made the data access and review very simpler. The providers don’t have to go through the whole file at every visit, scrolling few links brings forward the whole patient history.

Another great feature of EHRs is use of electronic prescriptions. Physicians can transmit the prescriptions directly to the pharmacy easily in access to the patient. This helps in preventing medication errors. Usually providers used to give handwritten prescriptions to the patient or fax it to a pharmacy. Pharmacist also used to have difficult time reading handwritten prescriptions and may have little or no information about the patient’s condition for which the prescription is written. Therefore, e-prescription plays a major role in reducing the incidents like drug duplication by alerting providers and plays a vital role especially with regards to controlled substances.

Electronic lab reporting systems with EHR have also brought forward focused and expected improvements to the completeness and timeliness of reporting. Eventually, the purpose of introducing EHR into healthcare was to facilitate the patients and providers with accurate reporting, by giving them an easy access of data and its availability, to have an economical solutions, and time management with the use of technology and ultimately survey reports prove a successful achievement of the set goals.

Dr. David J. Brailer, former national coordinator for health information technology in the Bush administration, states “The real gains come from improving the quality of the information that the doctor receives, so it is more accurate, complete and timely.”

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

The physical therapist should manage the Disablement Process for patients with cardiac, pulmonary, spinal, or whatever problems. He is well trained and prepared to fill the role as cardiac care manager; having to complete a six year course of study that focuses on the causes and treatments of virtually any movement dysfunction encountered by man. From the seen to the unseen, the physical therapist knows and understands what drives and powers movement of the human body as well as its limiting factors. His preparation includes coursework that focuses on normal and pathological movement from the cellular level on up to the person as an individual, through to his role in functioning as part of a society.

With a didactic preparation of coursework in psychology, physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy, kinesiology, orthopedics, neuroscience, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, path/pharm, work biology and motor control just to name a few, as well as clinical experience which includes, but is not limited to, three eight-week student affiliations in different settings such as acute-inpatient, out-patient orthopedics and neurorehabilitation, graduating physical therapists know well the physiologic rationale behind the interventions made to correct the impairments of the cardiac patient.

Interventions made by the physical therapist vary within a few main areas in regard to movement and the dysfunction that can occur. In the cardiac patient, interventions are directed at educating patients about their problem and then helping them identify and manipulate certain risk factors that are detrimental to their health. As therapists, we also intervene in the cardiac disease progression by halting and actually decreasing the patient’s impairments first of all by identifying them and then by formulating an exercise program according to their individual needs which has been proven to increase cardiac efficiency and function.

The disablement model is a definite help to the physical therapist in identifying and addressing disease and its consequences in an effort to delay and even prevent disability. The disablement model does this by extending “traditional epidemiological, medical and public health perspectives so that they focus on functional outcomes.” It is the focus on functional outcomes that is important. We can affect a decrease in disability by increasing functional abilities through impairment intervention. The disablement model helps break the disease process down into understandable and therefore manageable chunks.

When the physical therapist is charged with being a cardiac care manager, the application of the disablement will result in increased effectiveness of treatment, controlled costs of management and better patient satisfaction. This is a natural extension of what the physical therapist is trained to do. He can approach problems from a biomechanical, work physiological, neurophysiological, soft-tissue, or motor control point of view. Also, his knowledge of other health care professionals and ability to employ their skills in addressing the patient’s problems makes the physical therapist the obvious choice for providing cohesion and continuous flow to the treatment of disease processes.

It is his understanding of disease processes and time frames as well as his ability to recognize which aspects of care should be addressed by who that provides for effective treatment and controlled costs of patient management. Patient satisfaction stems from the patients knowing that their care is being comprehensively managed by a single competent health care professional who is addressing all aspects of the disease from their pathology to the impairments caused by that pathology as well as any functional limitations and the disabilities they may create.

An Introduction to Functional Foods and Dietary Supplements

If you’re new to the world of functional foods and  dietary   supplements , you might be thinking, “All foods have a function, don’t they? They provide nutrition and keep you from being hungry, what more are they supposed to do?” Well, there’s a little more to it than that.

The concept of functional foods first showed up in Japan in the mid-80’s. While there’s no scientific or universal definition of a “functional food,” the term is generally applied to any food eaten for a specific health benefit. If you eat blue blueberries because you like the taste, then they’re just a food. If you eat them because you know the contain glucoquinine, which helps strengthen your eyes, then they become a “functional food.”

At this point, the word nutraceutical comes in, too. A nutraceutical is an ingredient taken from ordinary food and sold as a healthy product. The line between nutraceutical and  dietary   supplements  can become a little blurry, though. For example, you might apply either term to blueberry or bilberry pills sold as vision support supplements.

Popular functional foods

The most common types of foods described as functional are vegetables and fruits eaten for the various vitamins, minerals and other nutrients they contain, and whole grains eaten as source of soluble fiber. Fish are often eaten for the omega-3 fatty acids they contain and many people also drink wine specifically for its beneficial effects on the circulatory system. Although berries are packed with vital nutrients, they’re often overlooked as a functional food simply because they taste good. It’s easy to forget they’re a “health food.”

Deciding on  dietary   supplements

When it comes to food, decisions are fairly easy to make. You’ve got to eat something, so why not choose the most nutritious foods you can, provided they’re at least palatable? With  dietary   supplements , though, the choice isn’t so easy. Advertising claims sound great, but many physicians warn against the dangers of overdosing, mixing supplements, or taking them along with prescription medications.

If you eat a healthy well-balanced diet with plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes

(along with dairy, fish, and lean meats, if you choose), you probably don’t need  dietary   supplements . Unfortunately, few of us can eat perfectly all the time. Consider  dietary   supplements  if you know you won’t be able to eat well for a while, if you have extra nutritional needs such as during pregnancy or breast-feeding, or you have a medical condition that impairs your digestion. Vegans may also want to look into  dietary   supplements .

Keep in mind, though, that some  dietary   supplements  can be almost as powerful as prescription medication. (After all, if they did nothing to your body, why would you even take them?) Before starting a new supplement, read up on its possible side effects and interactions and talk to your doctor about it, too.

With all the junk food available today, it takes a little planning and forethought to eat well.

Including functional foods and  dietary   supplements  in your diet gives you a far better chance of meeting all your nutritional needs than just picking up whatever is on sale at the supermarket.

5 Ways Software Implementation Will Help a Chiropractic Clinic

With chiropractic care expanding more and more every year, it’s been a pertinent issue in many offices to discover and implement ways of effectively dealing with the day to day activities as well as handling a larger flow of patients.

More people are realizing the benefits of seeing a chiropractor, and while that is good news for the industry, it also is creating a bit of stress as the amount of patients is outweighing the amount of facilities to treat them.

The software helps in many ways to encourage improvement and streamline the daily activities of the office to move more quickly and accurately from patient to patient.

The following are some ways that offices are seeing improvements.

1. Save Time – Patients enter the office and are immediately presented with a tablet where they can not only check in, but complete any necessary paperwork such as updates to their address or phone numbers, new symptoms, insurance updates and other similar information.

The elimination of paperwork helps to quickly check in patients so they can be seen right away.

2. Become More Organized – Paperwork is not only expensive because it’s wasteful, but it’s sloppy. Papers can rip or easily get misplaced. When information is entered into chiropractic clinic software, it automatically goes where it needs to and is sent throughout the office to the nurses, doctor and everyone. That way, when the patient is seen their information can be brought up at the click of a button.

3. Streamline Claims and Collections – Once the patient has been seen and all notes have been entered into the chiropractic clinic software, the claims and collections are sent off at the click of a button. This prevents not only tedious interaction with insurance agencies, but the mistake of forgetting which is no good for the provider or the patient.

4. Have a Happier Office – Easier work makes employees happy, and having everything they need at the click of a mouse is even more convenient. Plus, chiropractors can spend more time doing what they studied so hard for, and that’s to see patients, address their concerns and heal them.

In turn, patients are then happier. Happy they are getting the care they deserve and that they don’t have to fill out mountains of paperwork by hand. There’s no denying that using chiropractic clinic software is much easier.

5. Manage Patients with Ease – Chiropractic clinic software manages patients much easier than manual methods because as the appointment is taking place, the doctor can pull up information from the latest visit, what the initial concern was, any previous medical history and enter new notes on the current visit.

There aren’t too many, if any patients that would choose filling out paperwork with a pen over using a tablet. In addition, when they are checked into and out of the office automatically their wait times will be significantly decreased.

Further, patients don’t like receiving mail saying they owe what the insurance company should have paid. Since claims are sent automatically there is no chance of mistakes happening.

All in all, chiropractic clinic software can only do your office good. It has been developed by people who know the field and want to see it improve overall. Without the software, not as many patients would be able to be seen, and while the amount of offices slowly matches up with the amount of people seeking care, the software will be present and continue to improve.

Crohns Disease Information

The National Institutes of Health reports that many patients are unsatified with conventional Crohns  disease  treatments for a variety of reasons and more than half of these people seek alternatives.

Symptoms of the  disease  are uncomfortable to live with and can greatly affect the quality of a person’s life. As such, it is understandable that those who suffer from this condition would seek alternatives, especially when traditional therapies are often ineffective or cause unwanted side effects.

Recommended Crohns  disease  treatments depend primarily on the severity of symptoms.

The cause of the  disease  is unknown still, but recent Crohns  disease  information indicates that the  disease  may be caused by a bacterial infection. The most commonly accepted theory, however, is that Crohns is the result of a dysfunction of the immune system.

Milder symptoms are usually experienced during the onset of the condition and, in such cases, Crohns  disease  treatments may include an anti-diarrhea medication, aminosalicylates or corticosteroids. In the event these options fail, prescription medications that suppress the immune system may be prescribed by a physician.

Current Crohns  disease  information indicates that symptoms are caused by inflammation;however, it’s not an open and shut case because non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs have been linked to flare-ups as well.

Corticosteroids are used with other Crohns  disease  treatments, such as dietary changes, to control and reduce inflammation. Corticosteroids, however, are not believed to be safe for prolonged use due to potentially serious side effects, such as increased blood pressure, osteoporosis and a heightened risk of infection.

Additionally, corticosteroids lose their effectiveness over time so they do not present a long term solution.

In some cases, Crohns  disease  treatments with medications that work by suppressing the immune system have been effective. However, the problem here is that using these drugs increases a patient’s risk of infection because of the compromised immune system. With a compromised immune system, the body will find it more difficult to combat infection effectively.

In addition, the use of such medications may increase the risk of cancer. This is because the immune system’s function is to help the body attack and destroy abnormal cells. Such abnormal cells, if left unchecked, could progress into cancerous ones. The latest Crohns  disease  information indicates that aminosalicylates alleviate symptoms for some Crohns sufferers; however, on the downside, they may reduce white blood cell counts. In short, aminosalicylates may also lower a person’s resistance to infections and other  diseases  by compromising the immune system.

Current convetional Crohns  disease  treatments, in summary, obviously have their fair share of drawbacks and downsides. Current Crohns  disease  information lists surgical removal of the affected areas of the intestines as the only cure. And, it should go without saying that many people view surgery as an extreme, last resort measure. A compilation of Crohns  disease  information published in August, 2006 concluded that conventional Crohns  disease  treatments were inappropriate 52% of the time.

A group of gastroenterologists, surgeons and general practitioners evaluated the treatment plans of their colleagues for appropriateness.

This is not told to alarm you, but it could be part of the reason why more and more people are choosing natural alternatives to alleviate Crohns.

Some of the most prominent of these natural alternatives are: aloe, slippery elm, and mangosteen. If you have not heard of any of these, what’s important to know is that there is evidence that these substances may effectively reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

However, none of them have been proven in clinical studies to relive Crohns symptoms, but there are many anecdotal cases of people claiming they helped greatly.

What we do know is that slippery elm and mangosteen have a long history of use as digestive aids. Indeed, the Mangosteen in particular is referred to as “Queen of Fruits” in its native land for its many healing properities and uses, which include relieving diarrhea, pain and inflammation. Scientifically speaking, the mangosteen has been shown to harbor anti-inflammtories, which explains why it is sought out as a natural pain reliever.

Current Crohns  disease  information indicates that reducing inflammation relieves abdominal pain and other symptoms. In the end, decisions about Crohns  disease  treatments are a personal choice. But whichever way you choose — conventional or natural — make sure you tell your doctor of your intentions.

Recent Crohns  disease  information indicates that patients sometimes do not inform their doctors about natural remedies they are using. Some doctors and researchers are concerned about this, because some botanicals and herbals have been known to interact with certain prescription medications.

One possible reason for patient non-disclosure may be that people are afraid of what their doctors will say about the use of a natural treatment, but increasingly, many doctors today are more open minded to natural alternatives.

Eat Your Way to Heart Health

It’s February, and that means it’s American Heart month! Despite all the talk about heart health, I think we honestly forget what a big deal Heart Disease is in this country. It is the number one cause of death in the United States. Numero Uno. That is not something to take lightly. Certainly we’ve taken steps to try and combat this epidemic, but yet heart disease remains the most likely cause of death of an individual in this country. According to the Heart Foundation, a person suffers a heart attack every 34 seconds. The heart-healthy message isn’t getting across.

The frustrating thing is, heart disease is entirely preventable, yet I have met countless people who seem to think it is just something you “get.” Although most will admit they could have eaten healthier or exercised a tad bit more, they perceive it to be mostly out of their control. This perception is not entirely their fault, however. Some doctors barely even mention diet or exercise (although some do, or refer to RDs, and kudos to them). In most cases, meds are dispensed and symptoms are monitored.

But that’s why I’m here. I’m here to tell you that number one, heart disease is preventable and reversible. Number two, there are a plethora of healthy foods you can eat to “treat” yourself to better health. Let’s visit a few categories.

Omega 3s

Omega 3 fatty acids are heart healthy fats. They help lower LDL cholesterol and reduce overall inflammation in the body. Whenever there is inflammation there is a higher likelihood of oxidized LDL being deposited in the arteries. We need to keep LDL at healthy levels and decrease inflammation in the body. Omega 3 fats can help us do that. Where do we find them? Unfortunately Omega 3s are not prolific in the food supply, but there are some great foods rich in Omega 3s that you can start incorporating in your diet. Examples include fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines, grass fed beef, and plant based foods such as walnuts, flaxseed, and soy.

Other Healthy Fats

Besides Omega 3s, there are other healthy fats that make up a heart healthy diet. Unsaturated fats, such as those from olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocados are great for the heart. Contrary to popular belief, saturated fats aren’t all that bad either. In fact, coconut oil, butter and eggs can be heart healthy choices as well, provided they are in moderation and part of a diet that avoids or limits refined carbohydrates. While in research we have seen saturated fats cause increases in LDL cholesterol, it’s actually diets high in refined carbohydrates (sweets, bread, pasta, etc) that lead to the dangerous, atherogenic type of LDL cholesterol that leads to heart disease. I’d prefer you give up the pastries before you give up the butter.

We all know fiber is healthy, but it is especially helpful for heart disease, especially when it replaces refined carbohydrates in the diet. One particular fiber, soluble fiber, is known for its ability to lower LDL cholesterol, but all fiber is helpful. High fiber foods are all of the whole grains and plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. Foods that are specifically high in soluble fiber include nuts/seeds, oats, buckwheat, apples, pears, soy and legumes. Eat more of these foods. Eat less refined carbohydrates, especially those high in sugar.

Antioxidant rich foods are wonderful! Think of those plant based foods that are vibrant in color and full of flavor. That color and distinct taste are often a result of the phytochemicals, aka antioxidants. What do these antioxidants do for you? They help scavange free radicals so they aren’t left to do damage to your arteries or other organs. They essentially neutralize them. Since inflammation in the body tends to increase free radicals, antixodants are very important for heart disease. Good food choices? Colorful berries (think blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc), grapes, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, all types of vegetables, green tea, and even coffee. But this list is certainly not exhaustive. All plant foods have some sort of antioxidant component (and many of them work synergistically together), so eat a wide variety of plant based foods and you can’t go wrong.

Lean Protein

Protein is obviously an essential part of our diet. While higher fat meats aren’t necessarily unhealthy if part of a balanced diet, they can lead to weight gain which is not what you want if at risk for heart disease. Lean protein therefore is ideal because it’s not typically excessive in calories and helps keep your blood glucose stable, thereby helping you maintain a healthy weight. Make sure to have some sort of protein source with each meal. Healthy options include lean chicken, pork, grass fed beef, seafood, organic soy/tofu, low sugar dairy products and nuts/seeds.

There we go. Those are the key components of a heart healthy diet. If you focus on the foods in these groups while simultaneously cutting out the refined carbohydrates (namely sugar), you will be on a good path towards better health. Seems easy enough, right?

But what if it’s not? As with most things on the internet, including this article, words on paper don’t exactly translate to actions at home. I totally get it. I can read all day about accounting on the internet but I’m not one who gets those concepts on my own. I need help, hence I have a book keeper! The same goes for diet. Don’t be ashamed if you have more questions. That’s why us Registered Dietitians are here.

The beauty of a visit with an RD is that we get to sit down with you for an hour (and sometimes even longer) to discuss and create the best diet for YOU. Unlike in a doctor’s office, you have time to ask all your questions and receive lengthy feedback. Often people are confused as to where to start, what are appropriate portion sizes, what are some good meal ideas, etc. We can walk through this with you and create a plan that will work for you and your lifestyle. While some are afraid, thinking of us as the “food police,” we should be though of instead as the “food guidance counselor.” We are not here to judge, just to guide. We might suggest new diet options and new lifestyle goals, but always alongside you and with your complete agreement.

Please, if you have or are at risk for heart disease, incorporate these foods mentioned above. If you have never seen an RD before, I highly recommend finding one in your area. Maybe it’s just a one time visit, but at least you will get tailored advice and guidance to ensure you are doing things the right way. Eating shouldn’t be rocket science, but in our day and time it’s starting to become that way. Take charge of your health and let’s together reduce the incidence of heart disease in this country.
