Eat Your Way to Heart Health

It’s February, and that means it’s American Heart month! Despite all the talk about heart health, I think we honestly forget what a big deal Heart Disease is in this country. It is the number one cause of death in the United States. Numero Uno. That is not something to take lightly. Certainly we’ve taken steps to try and combat this epidemic, but yet heart disease remains the most likely cause of death of an individual in this country. According to the Heart Foundation, a person suffers a heart attack every 34 seconds. The heart-healthy message isn’t getting across.

The frustrating thing is, heart disease is entirely preventable, yet I have met countless people who seem to think it is just something you “get.” Although most will admit they could have eaten healthier or exercised a tad bit more, they perceive it to be mostly out of their control. This perception is not entirely their fault, however. Some doctors barely even mention diet or exercise (although some do, or refer to RDs, and kudos to them). In most cases, meds are dispensed and symptoms are monitored.

But that’s why I’m here. I’m here to tell you that number one, heart disease is preventable and reversible. Number two, there are a plethora of healthy foods you can eat to “treat” yourself to better health. Let’s visit a few categories.

Omega 3s

Omega 3 fatty acids are heart healthy fats. They help lower LDL cholesterol and reduce overall inflammation in the body. Whenever there is inflammation there is a higher likelihood of oxidized LDL being deposited in the arteries. We need to keep LDL at healthy levels and decrease inflammation in the body. Omega 3 fats can help us do that. Where do we find them? Unfortunately Omega 3s are not prolific in the food supply, but there are some great foods rich in Omega 3s that you can start incorporating in your diet. Examples include fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines, grass fed beef, and plant based foods such as walnuts, flaxseed, and soy.

Other Healthy Fats

Besides Omega 3s, there are other healthy fats that make up a heart healthy diet. Unsaturated fats, such as those from olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocados are great for the heart. Contrary to popular belief, saturated fats aren’t all that bad either. In fact, coconut oil, butter and eggs can be heart healthy choices as well, provided they are in moderation and part of a diet that avoids or limits refined carbohydrates. While in research we have seen saturated fats cause increases in LDL cholesterol, it’s actually diets high in refined carbohydrates (sweets, bread, pasta, etc) that lead to the dangerous, atherogenic type of LDL cholesterol that leads to heart disease. I’d prefer you give up the pastries before you give up the butter.

Fiber

We all know fiber is healthy, but it is especially helpful for heart disease, especially when it replaces refined carbohydrates in the diet. One particular fiber, soluble fiber, is known for its ability to lower LDL cholesterol, but all fiber is helpful. High fiber foods are all of the whole grains and plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. Foods that are specifically high in soluble fiber include nuts/seeds, oats, buckwheat, apples, pears, soy and legumes. Eat more of these foods. Eat less refined carbohydrates, especially those high in sugar.

Antioxidants

Antioxidant rich foods are wonderful! Think of those plant based foods that are vibrant in color and full of flavor. That color and distinct taste are often a result of the phytochemicals, aka antioxidants. What do these antioxidants do for you? They help scavange free radicals so they aren’t left to do damage to your arteries or other organs. They essentially neutralize them. Since inflammation in the body tends to increase free radicals, antixodants are very important for heart disease. Good food choices? Colorful berries (think blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc), grapes, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, all types of vegetables, green tea, and even coffee. But this list is certainly not exhaustive. All plant foods have some sort of antioxidant component (and many of them work synergistically together), so eat a wide variety of plant based foods and you can’t go wrong.

Lean Protein

Protein is obviously an essential part of our diet. While higher fat meats aren’t necessarily unhealthy if part of a balanced diet, they can lead to weight gain which is not what you want if at risk for heart disease. Lean protein therefore is ideal because it’s not typically excessive in calories and helps keep your blood glucose stable, thereby helping you maintain a healthy weight. Make sure to have some sort of protein source with each meal. Healthy options include lean chicken, pork, grass fed beef, seafood, organic soy/tofu, low sugar dairy products and nuts/seeds.

There we go. Those are the key components of a heart healthy diet. If you focus on the foods in these groups while simultaneously cutting out the refined carbohydrates (namely sugar), you will be on a good path towards better health. Seems easy enough, right?

But what if it’s not? As with most things on the internet, including this article, words on paper don’t exactly translate to actions at home. I totally get it. I can read all day about accounting on the internet but I’m not one who gets those concepts on my own. I need help, hence I have a book keeper! The same goes for diet. Don’t be ashamed if you have more questions. That’s why us Registered Dietitians are here.

The beauty of a visit with an RD is that we get to sit down with you for an hour (and sometimes even longer) to discuss and create the best diet for YOU. Unlike in a doctor’s office, you have time to ask all your questions and receive lengthy feedback. Often people are confused as to where to start, what are appropriate portion sizes, what are some good meal ideas, etc. We can walk through this with you and create a plan that will work for you and your lifestyle. While some are afraid, thinking of us as the “food police,” we should be though of instead as the “food guidance counselor.” We are not here to judge, just to guide. We might suggest new diet options and new lifestyle goals, but always alongside you and with your complete agreement.

Please, if you have or are at risk for heart disease, incorporate these foods mentioned above. If you have never seen an RD before, I highly recommend finding one in your area. Maybe it’s just a one time visit, but at least you will get tailored advice and guidance to ensure you are doing things the right way. Eating shouldn’t be rocket science, but in our day and time it’s starting to become that way. Take charge of your health and let’s together reduce the incidence of heart disease in this country.

Penis Conditions: The Bizarre and Thankfully Rare

Many men worry about whether their penis is “normal,” a concern fueled by the false conception that there is some ideal penis out there in size, shape and function that men would be blessed to have, or to approximate. But the vast majority of men have penises that are perfectly capable of functioning, and so long as they have taken measures to maintain penis health, they really have nothing to worry about. There are certain penis conditions out there that, though rare, contribute to problems in men’s sex lives and other areas. Some of the more interesting are discussed below.

Saxophone Penis

Some men have penises in a roughly saxophone shape. The bending may be caused by infections or blocked lymph nodes. Although most men can urinate normally with this condition, sex may be difficult or impossible.

Treating the underlying lymph issue or infection, in combination with penile reconstruction surgery, may be attempted to resolve the problem.

Penis Fracture

The penis contains no bones to fracture, but chambers within an erect penis can rupture, creating what is known as a penis fraction. When a man becomes erect, chambers called corpora cavernosa engorge with blood. If a man’s penis bends during a hard thrust while having sex (or practicing inventive masturbation methods), one or both chambers may rupture, allowing blood to escape.

When penis fracture occurs, there is no question as to whether something has gone wrong. Generally, the condition is tremendously painful, accompanied by a loud popping sound and immediate bruising. Men usually need surgery to repair the busted chambers in the penis. Immediate medical attention is highly recommended.

Urethral Stricture

A man’s urethra may narrow and begin to close up in response to scar tissue or inflammation from surgery, or from a straddle injury in which he suffered a blow to the manhood. This can cause difficulty urinating and lead to complications including prostatitis and urinary infections. Endoscopic methods, reconstruction of the urethra and a permanent urethral stent are treatment options.

Invaginated Penis

In rare cases, a penis can actually retreat into the subcutaneous fat layers of a man’s body, leaving behind an empty sheath like an elephant’s trunk. A hard blow to the penis can cause this. The invaginated penis generally cannot be used. Surgery is the corrective measure.

Penile Tuberculosis (TB)

When one hears “tuberculosis,” one thinks of the lungs. This is a bacterial infection that usually affects the lungs, but can affect other parts of the body as well, including the penis. It is thought that men can acquire penile TB by having sex with a partner who has the infection, or by receiving a circumcision from someone infected. Treatment usually takes six months of anti-TB medication. It’s important to get treated, since the infection can create the growth of masses on the manhood that can disfigure it.

The few men affected by the conditions above require medical attention in order to restore penis health. Most men only need to do the basics in this department: wash regularly, keep it protected during sexual encounters and use lubricant to keep the skin in good condition.

Another step men can take toward optimal penile health is to make use of a quality penis health creme (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) daily. This product contains Shea butter and vitamin D, rich natural moisturizers that help protect the skin from the assault of friction and keep it smooth, soft and supple. Additional benefits are L-arginine and vitamin C, which promote healthy blood flow, a crucial component of erectile function. Regardless of what state a man’s penis is in, using a skin care product just for the member is one way to boost its look and feel. Love what one has, and treat it well.

Outsourcing – Pros And Cons

Stripped of its technical terms, outsourcing is basically the practice of one company to contract another company to provide the services that could have been performed by their own staff. There are many reasons why companies now are on the bandwagon of having some of their services done by others. (It had been an old practice, really.) These outsourced services passed on to other companies are usually call center services, e-mail services, and payroll. These particular jobs are part of the outsourcing trend practiced by many companies these days.

Reasons

One of the main reasons why companies are into outsourcing is diminished company resources, both in financial terms and in manpower costs. When a company expands (which can be sudden), the growth can start to eat up on the companies resources.

Financially, the company might not be able to match the growth with the needed infusion of money to sustain the expansion. This holds true with their human resources as well.

With the growth, manpower might be sucked up with the new growth and diminish the company’s productivity in its core areas. The service-providing companies can do the work for less costs (thus not over-stretching most of the company’s resources), and has the manpower to do it.

Other Reasons

Efficiency sometimes suffers once there is a sudden expansion that cannot be absorbed by the company’s present staff setup and other resources. If, for instance, there is a huge demand for huge number of their products, other departments might not be up to it.

The purchasing department might need so many men to do the buying of raw materials, for instance. Outsourcing the purchasing department is a good move and costs less.

Other reasons could be that overhead costs might be disastrous to the company’s budget and current plans. Or, perhaps an offshoot to its growth is impossible to meet. If the company had grown to such an extent that it needs a bigger office, outsourcing the functions of the projected new additional staff is cheaper. (Transfer of the whole office to someplace bigger is definitely expensive in time, effort and money values.)

Companies are also bound to experience production demands that come and go in cycles within a year. Outsourcing additional resources during times of so much demand can ease up the company’s problems.

The good part of the deal is that the contracted periods of having these extra jobs outsourced can follow the cyclical production demands. (A toy company’s production department might need more manpower in the middle months of the year to produce the goods needed for, say, Christmas or some holidays.)

Cons

On the other hand, this new business model of parceling some important work aspects of a company to another had sparked a mini-controversy which had not been thoroughly resolved even until now. Definitely, there are those who are not fully convinced of the viability of such an arrangement.

The biggest argument against this deal is actually focused on the relationship of the company and its clients. In short, it may invite dissatisfaction from client side. Reasons could range from lower quality of work output, unnecessary dilution of company-client trade secrets, etc.

Control

Control is also put to the test. Some aspects of the company are in danger of spinning out of the company’s control since the outsourced company conducts the decisions that would have been better handled by the parent company.

Some clients are not fully convinced that the outsourced company can function as efficiently as the original contracted company. If they do (most companies can, in practice), clients feel it might be better to deal with the new company rather than their old supplier or contracted business partner.

Riding on this threat is the mounting danger of delayed communications that causes delayed implementation. Without proper management and apportioning of responsibilities, there is tendency that confusion might set in.

Outsourcing had also allowed a political issue to float around – social responsibility. It is said that with more and more companies allocating jobs to foreign countries, the people of the parent company will have reduced opportunities. While this debate and questions are still up in the air, more and more companies are outsourcing some of their work. Offhand, companies and their managers think the current trend is the result of the current situation in commerce and trade all over the world. At the moment, outsourcing looks like it will stay for a while.

Brain Tumor Removal Treatments Abroad

When talking about the delicate field of neurosurgery, you are referring to a medical discipline that deals with the diagnosing and treatment of different diseases and disorders in the brain, spinal column, spinal cord, the peripheral nerves or the extra-cranial cerebrovascular system (blood vessels supplying the brain).

As one can assume, the various treatments dealing with these organs are extremely delicate and must be performed in pin-point precision. If it is epilepsy, Parkinson’s, a brain tumor (malignant or benign), spinal disorders or other neurological conditions, it is critical the patient receives the proper medical treatment.

If a proposed solution to one’s illness is surgery, technology today allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive endoscopic surgery instead of the more traditional method of “open surgery”. With the endoscopic method, a surgeon will cause only minimal skin trauma, lowering surgery risks as well as shortening the recovery time for neurosurgery patients.

However, a problem may arise when a sick patient cannot go through the recommended treatments in order for them to heal as well as improve their quality of life. This is a situation that can occur when patients do not have adequate medical insurance (or any at all) causing the specific neurological treatment to be extremely expensive or it can also be due to long waiting lists for the specific procedure required. Either way the patient will remain untreated.

Medical Tourism

One practical solution for these obstacles is medical tourism, an option which can help patients undergo these treatments anyways. But before we take an in depth look at the medical tourism solutions for brain tumor treatments, let us address the more general question of “What is medical tourism”.

The phrase “medical tourism” (also referred to sometimes as “health travel”) describes the phenomena of patients traveling across national borders to receive healthcare. As some readers may think that medical travel is a new trend, this is not the case as it has been documented that patients have been traveling for medical treatments for centuries.

In addition to the reasons mentioned above (insurance and waiting lists), patients may also prefer traveling for surgery when there is a higher level of expertise as well as more advanced research in the specific medical field in another country, in this case the neurosurgery field. Anyhow, once a patient cannot receive proper treatment locally, they will look for a realistic option of medical treatment abroad.

Brain Tumor Treatments Abroad

Being diagnosed with a brain tumor isn’t an easy thing to go through. A malignant tumor is known to be a life-threatening growth as it will destroy normal brain cells and disrupt its function. A benign tumor, although not lethal, can lead to severe neurologic condition and can potentially cause seizures, behavioral issues, memory loss, as well as interfere with brain functions.

When the suspicion of a brain tumor arises, a biopsy (removal of a tissue sample from the tumor) is needed to confirm the diagnosis. Depending on the tumor type and stage, the recommendation for treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy as well as a combination of these three. It should be mentioned that radiation and chemotherapy are mostly used on malignant brain tumors as part of the cancer treatment regime while surgery is done both on benign and malignant tumors.

There are a number of different types of brain tumor removal surgery. A Craniotomy is the most common surgical procedure done on brain tumors today. In this procedure the surgeon will open the skull in order to have full access to the brain and remove as many tumor cells as possible.

As the medicine progresses, there are more and more minimal invasive procedures being done, preventing the need for open head surgery. One new technique is called the Neuroendoport (SM) technique, which includes an inserted tube through the skull, which creates a pathway for the endoscopic procedure, which keeps trauma to a minimum. There is an additional technique that the surgeon will access the brain through the patient’s nostril, thus avoiding skin trauma completely.

When a patient will be traveling to a foreign country for brain surgery, he or she will arrive in the hospital where they will be accepted by their attending doctor who will go over all the details of the procedure and send them for the proper preliminary tests. Surgery will be performed within a few days of the arrival followed by a recuperating period at a proper recovery facility. After the operation, the patient will of course receive specific orders from the surgeon, post-surgery medication and follow-up instructions.

The next time you hear about a brain surgery applicant that may be looking for alternative options, you can recommend the option of Medical Tourism, it may be suitable for the patient and save a life.

Some of the Most Common Infectious Diseases

In today’s world we are constantly faced with information about infectious diseases, infection control and disease prevention. We are all aware of the methods that we should apply to prevent the spread of infectious disease, such as washing of hands with antibacterial soap, using hand sanitizer, disinfectant spray and wipes as well as mouth covers. We are all aware of how to prevent infectious diseases, but we may not all be aware of what it is that we are avoiding. Lets look at the four of the most common infectious diseases in North America.

Chicken Pox (Varicella Zoster Virus)

Chicken Pox is generally considered being a children’s illness, but the truth is that Chicken pox is that in recent years, chicken pox has become more prevalent in adults and teenagers. This disease can be transmitted via direct contact with an infected person. Infection can be prevented by avoiding contact with an infected individual during the virulent stag of infection. Common infectious disease prevention techniques are extremely effective in the prevention of Chicken Pox, and a vaccine is available which can help to prevent infection.

Strep Throat (Streptococcal Pharyngitis)

Strep Throat is a particularly common infectious disease which is indicative of swollen tonsils, Difficulty swallowing, Malaise, general discomfort, feeling ill, Fever, Fever Headache, Chills, Ear pain Hives, Bumps, bruises, inflammation, or swelling on the side of the neck. Infection occurs by direct contact with an infected person. Common prevention techniques are useful to a point, but the best prevention is to avoid all contact with the infected person until the fever period has ended.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis is one of the most common infectious diseases in North America. Hepatitis comes in three main forms, all of which are caused by related viruses. The most common form of hepatitis is Hepatitis A, this is most often seen in its acute form, and usually lasts for less than six months from primary infection. Hepatitis A is also the main cause of liver disease worldwide, with Hepatitis C following closely behind. Treatments for Hepatitis are Dependent on the strain of virus that is the key acting virus of the infection. Prevention via common infectious diseases management techniques is highly effective. Infection depends on the particular virus of exposure.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a disease that can affect either one or both of the lungs on a person. This results in the inflammation of the lungs, along with the lungs filling up with fluid. There are several causes that can be linked back to the catching of pneumonia. Some of the more common causes of this condition include breathing in of bacteria, fungi or a virus. When a person has pneumonia, there are several symptoms that are related to a person who has this type of infectious disease. These symptoms include a cough, accompanied with chest pain and difficulty in their breathing. Many people who develop pneumonia have to be hospitalized in order to effectively treat this condition. Many times however, this can be treated with antibiotics that your doctor will prescribe for you.

Canine Influenza – Is There Such A Thing?

Canine influenza is generally not a stand alone problem. Symptoms similar to influenza in humans tend to accompany other complications according to the breed.

For example Greyhounds and Great Danes tend to be disposed to pneumonia. These breeds have narrow chests, indicating their susceptibility. Those breeds who have wider chests, such as the Bulldog are more disposed to limit their respiratory problems to the upper chest.

Influenza symptoms can include any one or more of the following symptoms:

rhinitis – inflammation of the nasal membranes leading to a discharge

sinusitis – signs can be difficult to see because congestion is felt rather than seen, but conjunctivitis normally accompanies this condition

tonsillitis – an inflammation of the tonsils may mean the throat is sore, with pain on swallowing, which may lead to refusal of food

laryngitis – an inflammation of the larynx is mostly localised and can result from excess barking rather than from a form of influenza; the bark sounds hoarser than normal

kennel cough – is a common problem where there are a number of dogs living in close proximity, usually under stressful conditions such as at kennels, away from home

Other respiratory problems that are more serious than canine influenza include bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary oedema, pneumonia and pleurisy.

Drooling and/or retching can accompany tonsillitis.

Kennel cough is characterised by, not surprisingly, a frequent cough.

Distemper has a number of stages which include a respiratory stage:

the initial stage can show up as an unusual nervousness, anxiety or excitability

the second stage normally has coryza (nose discharge) and lachrymation (eye discharge)

the third stage exhibits respiratory symptoms

then there are stages of gastro intestinal symptoms, skin symptoms, the nervous system and finally eye complications such as ulceration of the cornea

Canine influenza is not a problem in its own right, although the symptoms can look like it.

However, what is common to all these problems are your dog’s immune system. Your dog will not have any ailments when he has a strong immune system, respiratory or otherwise.

A strong immunity comes from a variety of important areas.

diet

immune boosting health care

living in harmony with his evolutionary needs, which includes limiting unnecessary stress

making sure your health is good as dogs are good at taking on your problems

When the diet is as close to that of his ancestors, as is practical for most people, then this will surpass all other diets.

When his health care doesn’t suppress his symptoms, but rather supports his body’s best efforts, his immunity will grow ever stronger. Natural health care, especially homeopathy probably offers you the best dog (and human) health care there is.

When he lives in an environment that supports his strong instinctive needs, his stress levels will be as low as they can be.

It’s really down to you and your actions. Along with all other health problems, canine influenza is not something to worry about when you care for your dog holistically – for all his needs, whether they are physical, emotional or mental.

Chains and Whips Excite Me!

Sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me!

-Rihanna, S&M

S&M which stands for sadomasochism or sadism and masochism, a term derived from the works of Marquis de Sade (Sadist viewpoint) and from Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch (Masochist’s viewpoint).

S&M is a popular subject of erotica and is often linked to kinky sex and role playing. Oftentimes, S&M is done with both partners consenting to the act, with a clear idea who will be the sadist and who will be the masochist.

S&M is ideally done with a partner that you trust. Engaging in S&M with a stranger or a person you hardly know is very risky and we highly advice against it.

Before going into S&M with your partner, know each other’s limits, discuss first what you are comfortable doing, the tools you are comfortable with, et cetera. Have a “safe word” so that when you say that “safe word” your partner will know that he or she really needs to stop.

Spanking, biting and bondage are common forms of S&M. Most couples engage in these acts especially during the climax in intercourse.

Biting

Instead of the usual light kissing, licking and sucking, go a little further by incorporating bites. A bite on the neck “vampire style” during intercourse can feel very intense. Try gradually increasing the pressure and gauge your partner’s reaction. Biting of the nipples as well as around the breasts can also be very stimulating.

Spanking

Spanking of the buttocks is quite common practice especially if the couple is sexually engaged in the dog-style position. Try spanking your partner’s vulva; start with light pats and increase pressure. You can do this while orally pleasuring her.

If you have a whip, you can also try to role play flogging. Again, make sure you know your partner’s limits. If you have a handcuff handy, cuff your partner’s hands as you begin the flogging.

Bondage

This allows one partner to fully submit while the other completely dominates. You can role-play some fantasies such as a rape fantasy wherein the girl is gagged or bound.

Candles

Use the hot wax to inflict some pleasurable pain on your partner. For example, the man can be bound or cuffed on the bed the woman is on top. While she is riding the guy, she can pour the hot wax on his chest and press her own body towards the wax before it dries so that both of them can experience it. Or the man can pour it on the woman’s back during sexual intercourse where he is behind her.

Popsicles

Cold can also be bitingly painful but pleasurable at the same time. During intercourse, alternate entering her with the penis and a Popsicle for an intense feeling of biting cold for both partners.

There are many, many situations that one can role play into sex as well as tools and toys that couples can use. Before engaging in S&M, always make sure that both parties are comfortable with it and there is mutual consent. It can be highly off putting for example, when the two of you are having a tender moment and out of nowhere, one suddenly whips out chains and other such paraphernalia.

S&M can spice up most sexual relationships. It adds a sort of alteration to sexual experiences that is almost surreal. There is some misconceptions out there about this sort of play being dark and almost unethical. The simple truth is keeping things interesting in the bedroom will benefit relationships and keep the fireworks flying. You don’t have to tell the world about these experiences, they are private to you and your partner, but don’t feel ashamed of them either.

Smoking-Related Illnesses

There is no doubt that smoking causes other illnesses that ranges from the minor sickness to the most fatal illnesses such as lung cancer and cardiac arrest. But despite of this, smokers worldwide continue to grow worldwide and tobacco manufactures continue to get rich. Smoking related illnesses would not stop smokers from puffing in the deadly substance in cigarettes and tobacco manufacturers will not stop from producing these deadly substances. Are the following smoking related illnesses not fatal enough to make a smoker stop the habit?

The most predominant smoking related illness is heart disease. The harmful substances inhaled by smokers harden the arteries which speed up the blood clotting. Once the arteries are clogged cardiovascular diseases called thrombosis which can either be coronary or cerebral. Coronary thrombosis leads to heart attack due to the clogging of the veins supplying blood to the heart. Cerebral thrombosis is caused by the clogging of the veins connected to the brain which can cause collapse, stroke or paralysis.

The second most predominant smoking related illness is cancer which does not only affect the lungs but the throat and mouth as well. Lung cancer is the deadliest smoking related illness of all and will most likely affect smokers than non-smokers. Statistics show that 90% of smokers develop lung cancer and 1 out of ten moderate smokers and 1 out of five heavy smokers will die of lung cancer. A scary thought indeed which should be enough to discourage smokers from continuing the habit. But apparently not enough. Aside from lung cancer, other smoking related illness causing cancer can also be developed due to smoking. This includes cancer of the bladder, cancer of the kidneys and cancer of the pancreas.

Another smoking related illnesses which is getting rampant among smokers is the chronic pulmonary diseases which is due the blocking of airflow and causes difficulty in breathing. Two of the most common chronic pulmonary disease is emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema is a deadly smoking related illnesses which is due to the damage brought about by smoking to the air sacs. While bronchitis is a smoking related illnesses which is characterized by continuous coughing with mucus for several months. One thing to note about chronic pulmonary diseases is that they occur during the later ages of a smoker’s life.

Other smoking related diseases are not as rampant as cancer, heart or pulmonary disease but they are nonetheless fatal and enough reason to quit smoking. These smoking related illnesses are high blood pressure, fertility problems, asthma, and eye damages such as cataracts and lost of eyesight, dental problems, ulcers, and over all physical appearance.

Lastly, smokers are not the only people susceptible to smoking related illnesses. Second hand smoke or those people who are exposed to the smoke breathe out by smokers are can also develop smoking related illnesses which can be as fatal with that of the actual smokers. Babies and young children with smoking parents are the most affected by second hand smoke.

Conductivity Micro-Structure During Electrical Spin Injection

Junction resistance of a mutually polarized negative spin injection can be simplified to a semi-infinite conductor junction if the tunnel contact interface has a conductivity mismatch.

The simplification begins by equating non-equilibrium electron concentrations through spin contacts at the Fermi level. The spin contacts have a derived electrical inference structure relative to their decay constants.

Electrical continuity, neutrality and charge conservation of the injection are related to their spin relaxation times and metallic approximations. This result can be calculated using a Poisson distribution for transport connections across each electrical spin channel. The Fermi level of the state densities can then be applied to the calculation if temperature is maintained at zero degrees Kelvin.

Bulk equations for the F region of the electrical spin relaxation show a primary selective contact if the resistance field follows the Kapitza electrical resistance profile. Indices of ferromagnetic, electrical spin relaxation in N regions of a FM-T-N-T-FM-junction structure have parameters that reflect the electrical contacts based on their spin form.

The spin valve of the electrical conductivity microstructure has a resistance basis that defines the junction boundary to be semi-equivalent to interface change. Kapitza electrical resistance and injection electrical conductivity is positive when the explicit equation length is defined by its sin(Y) junction parameters.

Ohmic resistance of polarization criteria show vacuum barriers that define efficient electrical spin diffusivity with low relaxation rates. As minority polarization factors both vacuum barriers into their preliminary equations, symmetry of each electrical system amalgamates across junctions. The junction amalgam has a series of defined properties that have diffusion currents with electrical tunnel contacts that vary depending on their scope.

Potential interface drop mechanisms are based on introducing various defects to the microstructure, such as electrical twin boundaries and blocking distributions.

High purity isothermal lamellae are consistent with electrodeposition factors and display strengthened electrical fields after spin injection has reached its final stages. Each defect reduces purity of the resistivity by increasing magnitudes as electron scattering rates progress across the stages, with the final stages showing a nonlinear temperature dependence over the true stress of the system.

Other mechanistic details of the lamellae include separation layers, Frank dislocations, glissile Shockley dislocations and curved TB microstructures.

An accumulation of dislocations can infer a primary electrical field generation where tensile deformation is relevant to the spin injection field matrix. Origination of the electrical resistivity twinning is dependent on the lattice form. Derivation of the electrical parameters are thus dependent on the lattice bonding.

Topical Remedies – One of the Finest and Most Effective Ways to Overcome Knee Joint Pain

To understand knee joint pain in a better way, it is very important to know about the components of the knee. The femur, which is the thigh bone, and the tibia, which is the shin bone meet at knee joint. These are connected together by ligaments, and the knee cap covers the joint.

The joint is divided into three compartments, which are medial, lateral and the patellofemoral. The medial is the inner side of the knee, lateral is towards the outside of the knee, while the patellfemoral is the area behind the kneecap.

Synovial fluid is a liquid which lubricates the joints and provides it with essential nutrients. While the synovial fluid reduces friction between joints, it also acts as a shock absorber and ensures smooth functioning and movement of joints.

When there is a problem with any of the components of the knee, it can cause pain, and one of the reasons could be extended or intense physical activity. Nevertheless, one can be inflicted by knee joint pain irrespective of his levels of physical activity, and at any age.

The underlying causes of knee joint pain could be strains, ligament sprains, muscle tears or even meniscus within the joints. Alternately, knee joint pain may be caused by more severe conditions, which could be bone fractures, dislocation, or ailments like osteoarthritis.

With some regular activity and exercise, muscles around the knee joint strengthen, and if one’s activity levels are lower, he could be more prone to knee joint pain. But it works both ways. If one is suffering from knee joint pain, it could be indicative that the knees might have been overworked, and activity levels must be reduced.

When one suffers from knee pain, it is invariably recommendable to avoid some exercises until you recover completely, and these include any high impact activities that can put strain on the knee joint. In such a scenario, one must avoid flexing exercises, and anything that involves squatting, jumping and running. As an alternative, one could go for low impact exercises, such as swimming and walking.

In some cases, knee joint pain calls for specialized medical attention, and one should consult with a physician if the knee joint pain persists for long. Similarly, medical attention could become necessary if one suffers from an accident, if there is any sort of deformity in the knee, or if swelling in the knee becomes worse over time.

Topical remedies are nowadays gaining great prominence for people suffering from joint pain. And a simple topical remedy can go a long way in ensuring relief from pain and everyday well being, allowing a person to do more by letting him be fitter and more energetic.

One of the key advantages of going for a topical remedy is that the medication acts locally on the inflicted area, and chances of occurrence of any side reactions are thus minimized. This is in contrast with the oral medications, which have an effect on the entire body and could at times be associated with side effects like nausea and drowsiness.

Topical remedies are thus considered as the best remedies for people on the go, as you can use these and carry on with your day. Bone Loss – A Serious Effect Of Menopause

Throughout our life, the body maintains a balance between bone loss and bone formation. Bone loss becomes a major part of the life of every woman after she reaches her menopause. The reason behind this loss of bone mass is due to the fact that in menopause- the ovaries stop producing the estrogen, which is necessary for keeping the bones strong.

It is often seen that this problem in women can increase rapidly during their perimenopause stage when the period becomes irregular and the estrogen level starts to drop rapidly. This can lead to serious medical conditions such as osteoporosis and osteopenia.

Therefore, it becomes absolutely necessary for women to take care of their bone health in the early part of their life so that they do not suffer from bone loss related diseases later on in life. The women who are especially prone to this problem are those who have a family history of osteoporosis and those who have thin or small frame. It has also been seen that women of Asian origin and those who are white have higher chances of getting affected by bone loss as an after effect of menopause. Those who have a history of taking steroids such as cortisone are also prone to this disease. It is also related to lifestyle and therefore, if you are smoking or drinking too much and have a diet that is low in calcium and Vitamin D, then you should be careful from now on. Otherwise it might lead to bone loss disease.

If you are in the age group of 65 and above or you are having irregular menstrual cycle, or you have your ovaries removed surgically, then also you might have the risk of suffering from this menopause related condition.

For preventing the bone loss you need to know beforehand, whether you are suffering from the disease. Visit your doctor and go through the DXA scan, which is a bone density test. This will give you the exact bone density of your body especially of those areas which are prone to this problem. The areas include spine, hip and forearms.

If you are a woman who is 65 or above in age should go for this test even if you are not suffering from any bone related disease. If you are a post menopausal woman who is Asian or white or take steroids or have lifestyle related problems, then also you need to go for the DXA scan. If you are a post menopausal woman with fractures then also you should go for the test.

The Importance of a Healthy Brain and Nervous System

The brain is considered the control center of the body with the nervous system acting as the highway, delivering messages from the brain to different parts of the body. These vital systems of the body are being performed even when the body and other bodily systems are in a resting state. Signals sent from the brain through the nervous system control all body functions such as thoughts, the way you move your body, and even how well you learn and remember things.

How well these systems are working within your body can dramatically influence mood, attitude and even your safety. For instance, when the hand touches a hot surface, the brain sends a message to that part of the body telling it to retract the hand. If these systems are not working to their full potential, things such as reaction times are affected and slowed.

The ability to focus is also controlled by the brain. It is human nature to have multiple priorities running through your mind at all times. This makes it difficult to focus on the task at hand, which may require your complete and undivided attention. The healthier these body systems are kept, the better they will work for you.

When these systems are working to their full potential, every part of the body benefits immediately. The ability to focus will be increased, mood will improve, and even food will be digested faster. As the productivity a specific systems are increased a domino effect is created; every body part is working together to heal and maintain all other organs and systems. Brain and nervous system health can even affect your immune system.

The brain and nervous system, like any body part, will begin to become more susceptible to disease and decreased functioning if they are not properly maintained. Like a car needs gasoline, oil and regular tune-ups, your brain and nervous system need specific amounts of vitamin and nutrients to continue to work properly.

One disease of the brain that has been increasing in the past 50 years is Alzheimer’s Disease. This is an irreversible illness that has a slow and negative progression. Alzheimer’s is most common in people over the age of 60 and results in the destruction of memory, thinking skills and even the ability to perform the simplest of tasks. In its ending stages, victims of Alzheimer’s Disease may not even have the ability to remember the faces or names of people that have always been in their lives and even their own children. Although some studies have led certain people to believe that Alzheimer’s may be hereditary, all studies show that it can be avoided with proper care.

Synaptol has all natural ingredients that help maintain brain and nervous system health with no side effects. Functions that will be improved include a stronger immune system, maximized attention span and focus and reduced hyperactivity resulting in a greater ability to focus and a more relaxed and calm demeanor.

Chinese Medicine – Allergies and Autoimmune Diseases

A weakened and out of balanced Qi (pronounced “Chee”) plays an important role in the development of allergies and autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune diseases are simply allergies against one-self. Examples of these diseases include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), dermatomyositis/polymyositis, systemic lupus erythmatosus (SLE), multiple sclerosis (MS), scleroderma, myasthenia gravis, Sjögren’s syndrome, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (a type of hypothyroidism), endometriosis (due to autoimmune ovaritis), chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome (CFIDS) and fibromyalgia.

A common complain of Qi deficiency is fatigue, and most of these autoimmune diseases present fatigue as one of their main symptoms. Another common symptom is depression, whether the weakened Qi causes the depression, or vise-versa is up for debate, but the existence of depression is a fact.

Qi depression and Qi stagnation cause imbalances between the energies of the organs, which manifest itself in specific symptoms such as pain, inflammation, irritation, vomiting, diarrhea and migraines to name a few.

If the depression, stagnation, and imbalance of Qi is prolonged the symptoms become more severe. Symptoms such as: loss of sensation on the extremities, loss of muscle control, paralysis, changes on the anatomy and structure of the bones, blindness and deafness, and extreme pain.

The treatment of allergies and autoimmune diseases with Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Chinese medicine, when we treat this type of disease, we not only strive to provide relief from the main symptoms, but also to treat what we believed to be the root cause of the disease; a weak and damaged Qi.

Often it is a Qi deficiency complicated by either Qi stagnation, a major imbalance between the energies of the internal organs, or a combination of all three that creates the disease. Patients with autoimmune diseases often have a long history of allergies, and they often present complicated patterns, which cause their treatment to be long drawn.

In order to improve their Qi, the patient must be willing to make changes to their lifestyle such as: reduced stress levels, make dietary changes, and learn relaxation techniques. In the Chinese Medicine tradition, we use acupuncture to bring the person’s body systems back into balance, relieve stress and pain. And herbal supplements are used to nourish the organs that need it, and to extend the effects of the acupuncture treatments.

We also provide dietary advice that is suited to the individuals needs. In our modern world with our hurried life styles, the poor choice of foods we eat, and the high levels of stress we endure, allergies and autoimmune have become all too prevalent.

But these diseases do not have to rule our lives; we can avoid them, or bring them under control by making a few changes to our lifestyle. We need to watch what we eat, supplement our diet, and reduce our levels of stress. All that together with Chinese Medicine, makes these autoimmune diseases more manageable.
