The Curse of Psoriasis

If you are one of the many who are suffering from psoriasis then it is just understandable that you might feel you are cursed. The skin condition is chronic, meaning it recurs when exposed to triggers like stress, weather condition and the likes. There is no known cure which definitely intensifies the burden of the patient enduring it.

Because of the skin disease’s prevalence, questions like “what is psoriasis?” and “is psoriasis contagious?” are fairly common. Let us answer these frequently asked questions one by one.

1. What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin affliction that is classified as one of the auto-immune diseases. Patients suffering from it have this abnormal body condition wherein there is an excessive reproduction of skin cells. This overproduction results to different symptoms that can be distinguished from mild to severe.

2. Is psoriasis contagious?

Psoriasis is non-contagious skin disease and non-infectious although no definite cause has been identified with its occurrence, it is widely known that genetics played a great part in it.

3. How can it be diagnosed?

Most often, medical doctors rely on the appearance of the affliction. Plaque psoriasis, one of the most common types of the skin disease, has a distinct silvery-white tone. In order to validate the findings, some tests, like skin biopsy or scraping, are ordered to be done.

4. What are the types of psoriasis and what are its symptoms?

There are 7 known variants of psoriasis and each can be identified through its appearance and other characteristics. These seven are:

a. Plaque psoriasis

It is the most common and most prevalent among the types. Approximately 8 out 10 psoriasis patients are categorized under this.

It manifests symptoms like the appearance of inflamed, raised and red skin with plaques of silvery-white color. These rashes can sometimes be itchy and painful. In severe cases, the skin may also crack and bleed.

b. Nail Psoriasis

Simply put, this type occurs and affects the fingernails and toes. It shows pitting, abnormal discoloration and growth.

c. Gluttate Psoriasis

This is less common than plaque psoriasis but like it, it also manifests thinner skin lesions. It is usually triggered by a respiratory illness and sometimes goes away on its own unless the patient is still exposed to the trigger.

d. Inverse Psoriasis

It is so named because the lesions, although bright and red, are smooth and shiny. It usually appears in areas under skin folds like armpits, groin areas, buttocks and genitals. They are prone to exacerbation because of exposure to sweat and constant rubbing

e. Pustular Psoriasis

This type although less common is more serious. It is characterized by pus-filled skin bumps with redness surrounding it. It needs medical attention since it can trigger secondary ailments like fever, chills, muscle weakness, and nausea among others.

It can be triggered by a number of factors like taking and sudden withdrawal of systemic medications, UV Light overexposure, pregnancy, stress and certain kinds of chemicals.

f. Scalp Psoriasis

Just like the nail psoriasis, this is aptly named because of the appearance of red and white scales on patient’s scalp.

g. Erythrodermic Psoriasis

This is the least common type of the dreaded skin disease and positively the most severe. If you see a patient suffering from this you will definitely ask that previous question – “is psoriasis contagious?” because of its intimidating appearance.

It may not be contagious but it surely needs an immediate medical attention. The body is covered all over by redness and severe itchiness. This condition causes one to have an increased heart rate and a change in body temperature.

Other than these, it can also cause serious complications like protein and fluid loss; infection; pneumonia; and congestive heart failure.

In any onset of a disease, it is wise to seek the advice of your medical doctor. This will ensure that you will get adequate treatment and medication appropriate to your skin condition.

Cure Fingernail Fungus

When seeking for a remedy of a persistent medical problem, especially that of the skin, hair, and nails, it is important to understand the cause and what the problem exactly is. Fungus in the nails is made out of dermatophytes which are tiny organisms that grow and dwell on either or both human fingernails and toenails.

It is a very common problem of which 35 million people in the United States alone are facing. It is difficult to cure fingernail fungus because once it reaches the interior of the nail, it is hard to apply treatment on, thus allowing the fungus to grow and reside in it. This is why prevention plays an important factor in battling fungi.

If you are used to sharing nail files, nail clippers, and other manicure and pedicure paraphernalia with people who you don’t know might have fingernail fungus, then you are most likely to have the same nail problem as fungi are easily spread from one person to another.

If you live in a moist environment, then you have a high chance of fungus living in your nails. However, these micro-organisms will only settle and start growing if you aren’t taking proper care of your nails.

You should be knowledgeable on the causes of each condition and disease you are suffering from. You may have acquired the fungus by accidentally damaging a nail, not protecting your feet by not wearing shoes near pool sides, lakes, and other moist areas, and not letting your toenails breathe by constantly wearing nail polish.

Another cause of a nail fungus is a weak immune system. You should also dry your feet after taking a bath and avoid keeping them moist as bacteria and fungi thrive on moist places. These organisms can easily enter your vulnerable nails.

It is easy to determine whether you have the fungus or not. Some of the most common symptoms of it are a change in the color of the nails, particularly if they have turned yellow and dark brown, if you notice some chipping in the nails and/or if they’ve become brittle, if your feet have lately been giving out a foul odor, and if you can actually lift the nail from its nail bed.

It can be very hard to cure fingernail fungus if you weren’t able to address these symptoms. This only means that the fungi are already living in your nails. Zetaclear is a popular cure for fingernail fungus which contains lavender, tea tree, clove oils, and jojoba.

Sporanox and Lamisil were two of the prescribed medications to cure fingernail fungus but were later on declared by the FDA as threatening to the heart is used long term.

Grass Allergy

Grass allergy is one of the most common and prevalent form of allergy that affects people with histories of it during certain seasons.

Grass allergy normally occurs all throughout the spring season and during the onset or ending of the summer season. Grass allergy is somehow directly linked to hay fever, because their symptoms and causes are somehow similar to each other.

Grass allergy can also take the form of an inhalant kind of allergy similar to asthma. It is noted that in the United States alone, about 30% of overall yearly allergy reported or recorded is in the form of grass allergy.

Grass allergy is caused by an allergen that invokes discomforting reaction upon body contact.

Cause of grass allergy

The most usual allergen or substance that cause or triggers grass allergy is pollen. Pollens are very tiny and small particles of ovulation structures owned by plants.

During your primary education and even in your previous Biology classes, you have encountered the word pollen on subjects related to the proliferation or reproduction of plants’ flowers.

Take note that pollens are so tiny and light that they can stick to the tiny feet of butterflies. Pollens are most of the time flying or are carried out in the air especially during summer and spring when trees, flowers, and mostly, grass pollinate.

Because pollens are so light weight and they are carried over through the air, people can inhale them. Inhaling pollen can cause or trigger adverse reactions to the person.

Symptoms of grass allergy

Manifestations that indicate the onset of grass allergy are usually identified with breathing disorders.

The most common symptom of grass allergy is severe or constant dry cough. Usually these cough will occur with sore throat. It can never be mistaken for a common viral colds or cough.

The person with grass allergy also experiences difficulty in breathing. It s because the air passages are narrowed or constricted as a result of the body’s defense mechanism against grass pollen.

It can be noted that since the air passage constriction is a body defense mechanism, it is not dangerous. The danger occurs when the person experiencing it panics and feel a thriving discomfort.

Itchiness which can appear in several areas of the body can also occur at the onset of a grass allergy attack.

In rare occasions, fever can also be detected. However, in such occurrences, immediate help from doctors and medical practitioners should be sought to detect the presence of complications.

Fevers indicate the presence of viral and bacterial attacks in the body and should therefore be immediately attended at to avoid further complications.

Treatment and prevention of grass allergy

The most effective treatment for grass allergy is also its most potent prevention. That is, to avoid the grass allergy causing allergens, which are usually grass pollen.

To avoid exposure to grass pollen or the possibility of grass pollen inhalation, people with histories are advised to stay indoors especially during summer and spring when grass pollens are carried out in the open air.

Doctors also advise such people to install a working air conditioner in their home and room to make sure the ventilation is good and the probability of air contamination with grass pollen is reduced.

Otherwise, medications are available both through prescription and over the counter. Allergy shots can immediately relieve and soothe the symptoms. Antihistamines are also usually prescribed to curtail grass allergy development among patients.

Cure Impatience and Irritability for Leaders

Impatience and irritability with others do so much damage… subtle yet insidious.

Leaders, regardless of their level in the hierarchy, have gotten to that position because they were considered able to manage others to greater achievement. Have you met, or worked with someone where someone has risen to the level of their own incompetence? They may be able to manage others, but are they equipped to manage themselves?

So often I hear the complaint that a leader wants others to be more responsible…more creative with offering solutions…be more accountable…anticipate problems…remember detailed instructions…be more like them! But the people they work with are not clones of the leader, and can’t read their mind, any expression of impatience and irritability infects their relationships and limits their effectiveness. This may include people they report to, colleagues at their level, as well as direct reports, and even clients and vendors!

I’ve heard clients describe their behavior as cross, stern, resentful, sarcastic, demeaning, belittling, angry, belligerent, etc…you get the idea. Do any of these ways of being suggest personal power, much less self-management? Not only that, you have now successfully cut off any flow of ideas, you’ve lost control of the situation, and can only regain it by some form of bullying. And you don’t know what the other person is thinking, and that is potentially damaging to your success.

Here’s the hard fact: you can’t change people. They are who they are, and they’re NOT you!

However, you can influence people, and the place to start is with you. There’s nowhere else you can be as effective as when you manage yourself, and train yourself to manage others.

The critical question to ask yourself is, “What’s the benefit I realize when I behave in this manner?” There’s always a benefit -it may not be a pretty or necessarily advantageous benefit, but there is a benefit. It usually has to do with protecting your reputation, your position, your ego or your image. Behaving in this way to others does solidify your reputation and position, but not in the ways you would like for your long-term success.

Here’s the quick antidote to impatience and irritability: STOP….BREATHE….REGROUP!

That is your one and only line of defense and it needs to be practiced constantly, consistently, in every situation! That deep breath allows you to respond rather than react, and in that moment you can design your response with mindfulness, to the situation at hand and the unique individual involved.

In that moment you get to choose the leadership quality you’d like to adopt. Is it patience? Equanimity? Understanding? Lighten up with humor? Might you act as coach, and ask questions, which promote others problem-solving abilities?

That’s the challenge: how do you find the patience and tolerance to cultivate the relationships in your life and business to be more responsible and contributing to the common good? You will simultaneously preserve, even enhance, your position and ability to influence others.

Here’s the definition of leadership that guides me and my work: Authentic self-expression creating value for self and others. This is what true leadership is about: getting others to see what’s possible for themselves and getting them to actively participate in contributing their part.

It must start with you. To create value and to manage others, you must create value for yourself, and there’s no better place to start than managing yourself.

Depression – What You Should Understand

Recession, inflation, climate change, natural calamities, and terrorism–the combination of these global problems may just be the reason for the increase in the number of people suffering from depression. Add to that advances in technology that have virtually made real-world social interactions obsolete, and we get the modern-world’s depression equation.

Depression is a disease that remains to baffle scientists and researchers. There are countless theories that hope to explain this phenomenon of the human mind and all of them give plausible explanations.

Medically, depression is considered a disease, reasoning that it is due to an imbalance in neurotransmitters (substances that transmit signals from the body to the brain) or because of a poor diet leading to an imbalance in vitamins and minerals.

Psychologically, depression is a result of traumatic events that may come in the form of a loss in the family or the presence of a serious disease or illness.

The good news is, many health professionals assert that depression as a disease is treatable.

Untreated depression can lead to many undesirable behaviors — from oversleeping and over-eating to self-flagellation and even suicide. Even minor depression could affect one’s productivity at work and relationships, that is why once identified, depression must be treated with professional help.

However, there are ways that could help one cope with depression and a strong support group, family and peers, plays and integral part in this.

Keeping a positive outlook on life’s events would also help minimize the occurrence of depression. This can be accomplished by understanding one’s mind and realizing one’s purpose and goals. Yoga and meditation helps promote positive thinking.

A balanced vegetarian diet can also help battle depression. Meat eaters consume large amounts of protein, which is found to prevent the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, known as the body’s “good mood hormone.” It should be noted that of all the essential amino acids, only tryptophan can be converted into serotonin. Because of the low amount of serotonin in the body, there is an increased likelihood that one would easily experience depression.

Ironically, tryptophan is present in high-protein food including red meat. However, it should not be misconstrued that because of the high levels of tryptophan in meat it follows that serotonin levels would be elevated. On the contrary, studies show that consumption of too much protein decreases the level of conversion of tryptophan to serotonin.

In addition, there are also countless procedures used in the treatment of depression, although medical professionals would agree that the disease can be treated by complementing anti-depressant medication with psychotherapy sessions and family counseling.

However, before any treatment can be made, the patient must first be able to accept and recognize his condition.

The National Institute of Mental Health has identified the following to be symptoms of depression: Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood; feelings of hopelessness, pessimism; feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness; loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities; decreased energy, fatigue, being “slowed down”; difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions; difficulty sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping; appetite and/or weight changes; thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts; resslessness, irritability; and persistent physical symptoms.

These symptoms may not necessarily be experienced as a whole. Some would experience just a few while others suffer several of these symptoms. The NIMH advices that should these symptoms be observed, a professional healthcare provider should be sought.

How to Overcome Bridge Phobia

Gephyrophobia, also known as bridge phobia, is an unreasoning fear or dread of crossing bridges. There are several reasons for this phobia to exist. In many cases, this is a part of a larger group of phobias, such acrophobia, fear of heights, or a fear of the water. In other cases, this phobia stands alone.

Bridge phobia and most other phobias, often develop following a traumatic experience. For example, it was feared that a great number of cases of bridge phobia would be diagnosed following the collapse of the interstate overpasses in San Francisco a few years ago. Whenever people approach the object of their phobias, they begin to experience feelings of anxiety, sometimes leading to a full blown panic attack.

Treatment for bridge phobia consists of antidepressant or anti anxiety medications in conjunction with behavioral therapy to teach one coping mechanisms to employ whenever placed into a situation that would trigger the phobia. Another treatment is called desensitization. This works by putting yourself into the situation that triggers your anxiety a little at a time until it stops bothering you, then going a little further.

Some bridges are known to be built so high or so open that they trigger a panic attack in many of the people who attempt to drive or walk across them. Many of these bridges have become aware of the problem, at least the people who own the bridges, and offer a fee based service whereby someone will drive your car across the bridge for you.

Bridge phobia is not an uncommon problem. The good news is that there are ways to get over it without having to limit one’s self to one area because crossing a bridge is out of the question. Treatment, therapy, and behavior modification are all available methods of dealing with this or any other phobia.

Diet to Help Eliminate Anxiety

There is no quicker way to reduce general anxiety than having good eating and drinking habits. One of the most easily implemented and effective additions to your diet is fresh water. Water is a great quencher of thirst–but more importantly here–It is a helpful tool as an anxiety cure.

Nearly every function of the body is monitored and pegged to the efficient flow of water through our system. Water transports hormones, chemical messengers, and nutrients to vital organs of the body. When we don’t keep our bodies well-hydrated, they may react with a variety of signals such as anxiety, which we would never think are related to our poor drinking habits.

Diet to Help Eliminate Anxiety : Water Here are some interesting information about water:

1. Seventy-five percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

Regular fresh drinking water is a vital ingredient to your diet when looking at anxiety cures. When we are dehydrated, our cells can feel this at a molecular level and communicate this to the subconscious as an underlying subtle anxiety. The key to rebalancing a deficit of fluids is to drink eight glasses of fresh water daily.

Have you noticed the effects of dehydration on your emotions before? If you have ever suffered from a serious hangover from a night out on the tiles, you will understand the feeling of dehydration all too well. Hangovers result from dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. I am sure many of you are familiar with the tendency to have what has become known as “the hangover fear.” This is a heightened sense of anxiety and jumpiness that results from the dehydration caused by a hangover. The surest way for someone who suffers from anxiety to experience a panic attack is to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and wait for the hangover to set in the following day. Water is a great cure for anxiety in this particular situation.

It is important to be aware that dehydration is a factor that contributes to anxiety and that a diet to help eliminate anxiety should contain ample amounts of fresh water. Personally, I have found that not only does regular intake of water ward off subtle feelings of anxiety thus greatly helping as a cure for anxiety, but it is also incredibly effective for building stamina and avoiding fatigue.

Diet to Help Eliminate AnxietyDiet (Food) On average, most people have a very acidic diet, which results in not just a lower resistance to stress but to a variety of serious health problems. Your diet is something you can immediately control and help you build your resources of anxiety cures. As you master your diet, not only are you improving your overall well-being but are also building up a positive mental attitude, which says, “I am in control of my body.”

If our internal environment is too acidic, this can exaggerate any anxiety we may be experiencing. The body is in a greater state of health when it is balanced internally. What is needed is to bring the body’s internal pH balance into acceptable parameters. The elimination of high anxiety is not easy unless you maintain an alkaline balance in the food you eat. If your food is too acidic or you indulge in excessive amounts of foods, your body cannot function at its best. It will have difficulty eliminating toxins from your body, and will have less of a buffer zone to stress, leaving you feeling vulnerable and shaken when anxiety strikes.

Food such as salt, sugar, and refined or processed products lower your body’s resistance, whereas food such as fruit and vegetables raise it. As you control your body’s needs, you empower yourself and gradually build a body that does not feel threatened by an onslaught of high anxiety.

Proteins, nuts, grains, and dairy products (except yoghurt) along with alcohol, sugar, and salt are acidic foods.

Fruit, vegetables, and juices, are alkaline.

Diet to help eliminate anxiety

For optimum balance you need an 80% alkaline diet. This means concentrating on fruits and raw vegetables using proteins in small quantities for when you need energy. A person with a good diet needs only 50 g of protein a day. This should consist of 7 ounces of animal protein (or a vegetarian equivalent) or 36 ounces of good yoghurt. The rest of your diet to help eliminate anxiety should be alkaline (should you have a very strenuous or physical occupation you may need more than 50 g of protein a day). Below is a more comprehensive list of alkaline foods that will help bring greater balance to your diet and help you cure your anxiety more easily.

Diet to Help Eliminate AnxietyA diet to help eliminate anxiety should contain…. Parsnips Rutabagas Cauliflower Mushrooms Green Beans Green Peas White Potatoes Tomatoes Muskmelon Cantaloupe Limes Tangerines Strawberries Pineapple Oranges Grapes Apricots Blackberries Peaches Raspberries Pears Apples Beans, Dried Dried Figs Dried Dates Bananas Raisins Avocados Prunes Sweet Potatoes Watermelons Honeydew Melon Almonds Millet Molasse Beet Greens Celery Chard Leaves Watercress Sauerkraut Lettuce Green Limas Cucumbers Radishes Cabbage Broccoli Beets Brussel Sprouts Carrots Green Soybeans Raw Spinach

Diet to help eliminate anxiety Minerals to help cure anxiety

Mineral stores in your body have a buffering action on acid and tend to alkalize the acidity in the internal environment. Low or deficient mineral stores can lead to acidic bodily pH. The buffering action of mineral stores keeps the pH toward the healthier and slightly alkaline side of the pH scale. This buffering system is delicately balanced and can get disrupted under mineral-deficient conditions. Both the acid and mineral residues are discarded through the urinary tract. Over time, this depletes the mineral stores if they are not replaced. This is the reason we should ensure to get adequate mineral levels in a proper diet to help eliminate anxiety. If we don’t get adequate levels through the fruits and vegetables we eat, then we need to use good quality supplement minerals to help aid our efforts to cure anxiety.

Nutrients that are paramount in helping the body cope with stress include B complex, raw adrenal concentrate, desiccated liver, flax seed oil, and colloidal minerals. A balanced B-complex vitamin supplement is essential in normal pituitary and adrenal function. Without B complex, these glands will not produce adequate hormone levels.

Minerals are absolutely essential in normal bodily functions including autonomic nervous system function. A good example of their importance is demonstrated by the role a mineral, such as magnesium, plays in bodily functioning. Magnesium is instrumental in over 270 biochemical reactions in the body. It also helps regulate the pH (acid-base balance) of the human physiology. The human body functions within a very narrow pH range. Sodium and potassium are essential in nervous system functioning. Without either one of them, our nervous system would be inoperable and we would die. These minerals are usually found naturally in the vegetable that we eat. However, the mineral content in vegetables has diminished over the years from the depletion of the soil. Therefore, it may be necessary to take mineral supplements as part of a diet to help eliminate anxiety.

The truth is that it can be very difficult to maintain composure and confidence in your ability to handle all that life throws your way if your body is malnourished or deficient in vital foodstuffs. Look after your body’s needs, and you will be strengthening your body’s ability to cure anxiety and panic attacks.

I am convinced over the next five to ten years, a definitive link will be made between diet and helping cure anxiety. There are some very interesting research currently being conducted in 2004 into the connection between improving schizophrenia dramatically using a gluten-free diet. Although schizophrenia has nothing to do with anxiety or panic attacks, it is an example of how science is now looking to foodstuffs and their connection to our mental health.

How to Overcome Insomnia

Insomnia  is a condition characterized by difficulty getting to sleep or difficulty staying asleep, or both. Problems with sleep are often associated with many conditions, including medical and psychiatric illnesses. Sometimes  insomnia  can be caused of drug or alcohol abuse.

Depending of the type and the causes of  insomnia  there are different treatments. The best way to do is to look for medical treatment that is monitored by your doctor. In addition you can try some of the following practices that sometimes have positive effect in curing sleeping disorders.

Exercise has a direct, beneficial effect on several factors that affect  insomnia . Physical activity reduces stress and anxiety that sometimes cause  insomnia . Regular sport activities usually improve sleep patterns for many people.

Many people suffering from  insomnia  prove they have overcome it by a strict bedtime routine. It can include various activities such as hygiene practices, making of the bed, having a cup of warm milk, etc. the point is to start associating these with sleeping and improve sleep.

Relaxation techniques.

Some relaxation techniques can also be employed to help overcome  insomnia . First of all stop any activities at least four hours before bedtime. You can try some relaxation exercises or yoga to help falling asleep and better night sleep. Aromatherapy also helps so check which aroma therapeutic substances re good for this purpose. Another relaxation technique is to receive some massage treatment.

Sleep restriction.

This is another common method for overcoming  insomnia . The idea is all time spend in bed to be in sleeping. It is achieved by calculating only the sleeping time. Than the person suffering from  insomnia  should go to bed at a time that will make the waking hour when the sleeping time is calculated.

People who prefer to be awake until late in the night simply go to bed later so that they can get up at a decent time and people who prefer to be awake in the mornings go to bed earlier.

The whole idea of this method is that the only time allowed in bed is for sleeping. The allowed time should be monitored and adjusted according the result shown. Not only that by this treatment the bed is only associated with sleep but also it is likely that the day time fatigue to increase which can also help overcome  insomnia .

Alternative methods.

Insomnia  can be overcome by some alternative methods as well. Traditional Chinese Medicine and hypnosis are some of the common practices. If you are eager to try something of these find a certified practitioner and always check with your doctor if the recommended treatment is suitable for you.

How Can I Stop Snoring?

Your spouse complains you snore too loudly. People around you tell you they cannot get enough sleep because of your snoring. You are now in a dilemma with your condition and keep asking yourself: how can I stop snoring once and for all?

Before you run to the nearest drug store to get an over the counter drug for anti snoring, try to analyze what causes you to snore every time you fall asleep. It is important to know why you suffer from this condition so that you will be able to find the appropriate solution to your problem.

What causes snoring?

Snoring is caused when the muscles in your airways relaxes while you sleep. Moreover, when it is relaxed, the tissues move into your airways and constrict them, leaving less room for the air to flow through. With a limited room to flow, the air pressure becomes faster and more turbulent which causes vibrations in the soft tissue therefore it produces the snoring sound.

Other factors that could possibly contribute to your constant snoring are:

• Smoking
• Being overweight
• Alcohol consumption especially at night
• Nasal decongestion caused by allergies
• Inflamed thyroid
• Sleeping pills and relaxants

Here are suggestions to remedy your snoring problem so that you will never have to ask yourself with this question: “how can I stop snoring?”

• Change your sleeping position. People who sleep on their back have the tendency to snore more often that people who sleep on their sides or stomach. If you are not used to sleeping on your side, sew a tennis ball at the back of your clothes to prevent you from rolling to your back. The discomfort of the ball will keep you on your side as you sleep. Hug a pillow and place another one on your back to prevent you from rolling over.
• Change your lifestyle. If you are overweight, losing those extra pounds can be a great challenge. Smoking and drinking also contributes to your snoring problem. Do something with your weight problem and stop smoking and drinking for a healthy living and peaceful sleep.
• Over the counter anti snoring devices such as nasal strips, chin straps or anti snore pillows are effective for mild snoring condition.
• For serious snoring condition, your doctor may recommend surgery in order to stop snoring. This is only the last resort when nothing else works.

Now that you know some of the most common and effective solutions to your snoring problem you can stop asking yourself, “how can I stop snoring?” Instead, you and your spouse can now look forward to a quiet, peaceful slumber.

Nail Fungus Laser Treatment – Is It Safe and Effective?

Nail fungus is the most common infection of the nail. It comprises the total fifty percent (50%) of nail abnormalities. Toenails and fingernails are both vulnerable to nail fungus infection. The fungus makes the nail brittle, thick and rough. There are at least fifty to sixty percent American adults who are currently infected with nail fungus across the country.

What is a nail fungus?

Nail fungus infection is also widely referred to as Tinea Unguium and Onychomycosi. Dermatophyte is the type of fungus that feed and thrive on the human and animal skin and flesh. They are the main culprit to many skin diseases as well as nail infection. These organisms can live and survive with an ample amount of sunlight. There are also types of molds and yeasts that can bring about nail fungal infection.

The doctor will have to examine a sample from the nail to determine if a person is indeed suffering from a nail fungus. The specimen will be put under a Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) test. This test is an accurate procedure to test for skin diseases like nail infection. The nail sample and a drop of KOH will be mix together in a slide. The slide will be heated for a short time. When the KOH separates the fungus from the nail, it can be seen under the microscope.

What is a Nail Fungus laser treatment?

Laser has become the modern world’s method to treat human diseases. It uses a specialized laser beam that selects and targets the area that needs to be destroy. It utilizes several wavelengths that varies and corresponds according to the specified need. Laser use has surely gone a long way. That is why many are psyched to use this innovation.

Ever since the 1980’s researchers has been using laser therapy to manage nail fungus infection. Back then, they use the laser beams specialized machine to dig deeper into nail. The specialist will then apply the medicines directly, thus killing the fungus in the nail.

But is it worth it? Laser treatment is widely recommended by doctors for various diseases. It is also known to be the fastest yet safest procedure to cure nail fungus. In fact, a procedure can last up to ten minutes. Many can attest to its efficacy. Iet does not cause any damage to the cells and does not affect your internal organs. A health oriented website called “Health and Beauty base” has found out that 90% of patients grew their nails after one laser treatment. In fact, the patients also confirmed that the laser treatment made their nails look healthier.

The only downside of the treatment is the cost. Laser treatment is very expensive ranging from $200 – $500. Furthermore, laser treatment is only recommended to the severely infected toenails and fingernails. You can ask your respective health care provider to check if the laser treatment can benefit your or not.

There are many ways to treat nail fungus infection. It can be treated through natural home remedies, prescription medicine and laser treatment. Natural home remedies are cheap, easy to find and has fewer or no side effects. However, one must be wary of potential allergic reactions. Prescription medicines are slightly expensive depending upon the type of medicine or ointment that a doctor prescribes. The check up itself is expensive too.

Remember that health and safety goes hand-in-hand. Make sure to schedule a consultation with your doctor first before getting into any type of surgeries, treatments and medications. Nail fungus may seem harmless but little did everyone know that when ignored, the fungus can spread all over the body. So be very careful!

Caring For a Sprained Ankle

Every day in the USA approximately 25,000 people sprain an ankle. They can be weekend warriors, serious athletes or couch potatoes. Yes, it is possible to sprain an ankle if you take a mis-step rising from the couch.

Your bones are held together by tissue fibers called collagen fibers and ligaments, which allow motion of the bones. These fibers flex with movement but they have a range within which they can stretch. And there is a limit to this range. When they stretch beyond this limit, the result is an ankle sprain.

The seriousness of the sprain depends on whether you have only torn the collagen fibers or whether you have completely ruptured the ligament. Based on this criteria, the medical profession grades sprains in categories of one to three. The least severe is a Grade 1 sprain. Here, the ligaments have been stretched beyond their flexing capabilities but they are not torn. In a Grade 2 sprain, the ligaments are partially torn but there is no instability of the ankle. A Grade 3 sprain is the most serious. The ligaments are completely torn and there is instability. For all types of sprain, the symptoms are the same. You will experience pain and swelling.

When you think you have sprained your ankle, it is important to see your doctor. There are many tiny bones in your feet and you want to be very sure that you have only sprained your ankle and not broken a bone. As part of your diagnosis, your doctor may take an x-ray to be certain.

Some sprains require splinting or casting and only your doctor can determine this. Higher grade sprains require more extensive treatment and take longer to heal. With a Grade 1 sprain you may only need rest and ice packs to help the swelling and an over-the-counter pain reliever such as Aspirin. However, failure to get the proper diagnosis and treatment in the beginning can cause many unpleasant and expensive problems further down the road.

If you have a Grade 2 sprain, your doctor may recommend that you wear an ankle brace until the sprain heals and use crutches for a short time.

In the case of a severe sprain, your ankle joint may be unstable. If this is the case you may require a cast to immobilize the joint until it heals. You may also be referred to a orthopedic specialist for further evaluation.

Even after you return to normal activity your doctor may recommend an ankle brace to support the ankle and protect it from re-injury.

As with any injury, recovery time will depend on the seriousness of the sprain. Regardless of the severity, you can speed up the healing process by staying off your ankle and resting it as much as possible. No matter what the grade of injury, unless it is splinted or casted, your doctor will probably tell you to apply ice packs to relieve swelling and pain.

It is also important to wear a comfortable shoe that provides significant support. For women, this is not the time for high heels and sling backs.

Finally, as soon as you can you should exercise the ankle to condition and strengthen the muscles around the joint. Your doctor will recommend exercises to do this.

Difference Between Botox and Fillers

What are the differences between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

(Botulinum toxin A) is a muscle relaxant. It has been use for over 25 years in hospital situations. The muscles most commonly relaxed with Botox for cosmetic reasons, are the frown lines between the eye brows and the laughter lines around the eyes.

Relaxing the muscles with Botox using tiny amounts injected into the muscle, means that the muscles can’t contract forming the lines and creases. Botox between the eye brows results in a smoother appearance taking away that worried or angry look. Botox round the eyes takes away the severe creases called crows feet.

Botox can be used to soften lines or take them away completely depending on the look you would like.

Many clients like the new fresh and happy look which helps them feel more confident.

It is important to have an experience health professional to do the treatments and it is very important to discuss the look you would like to achieve.

The treatment is quick and there is no down time. Occasionally there may be a small bruise which is easily covered by make up and will resolve in a few days. The result takes a few days to appear.

Botox lasts from three to six months before needing to be repeated.

Dermal Fillers

Filler is usually a liquid gel made from Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid is found naturally in the skin and so has a natural affinity with the product. There are many brands of filler and it is important that only reputable brands are used as they have been refined and tested world wide and are very safe to use.

Filler is injected under the skin immediately giving volume, filling out deeper creases and wrinkles. It is often called the lunch time face lift as the effect is immediate and the only side effect can be a little bruising which is easily covered by make up, or slight swelling which usually goes down overnight.

The areas usually treated with filler are the deep lines from nose to mouth, the lines from mouth to chin and also cheeks which have lost collagen. Filler can also bee used for lips. The softer natural look is very popular today.

The gel replaces lost collagen and recreates a younger fuller face which has been lost due to aging. Many clients feel 10 years younger as the sagging areas have been rejuvenated, filled and lifted.

Most clients report feeling much more confident and happy with the results

Determining what I should have:

Botox works on muscles to reduce wrinkles and filler creates volume to plump up sagging skin and wrinkles. Both treatments have a place and need to be used appropriately. Your experienced Health Professional can guide you in choosing the correct procedure to give to the results you are looking for.

Deciding what is best for you should be undertaken with a thorough consultation with your Health Professional and you should only decide to commit when you feel very comfortable with the decision you make.

Modifying Pilates For Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis Dos and Don’ts

Maintenance of bone density is accomplished by long term routine loading on our bones, which will revert to pre-training density when exercise is discontinued. To best maintain what you have and avoid more loss, follow these rules:

DO weight bearing exercise on your feet every day. The other day an osteoporotic client in the studio asked why she should not continue doing the plow in yoga, since being in that extreme flexion was certainly bearing weight on her spine. Weight bearing in our case means standing on your feet! Rolling on your back not only doesn’t cut it, but can actually cause vertebral fractures. Just say NO!

DO work on your balance in standing as often as possible. The less you fall the less your risk of wrist or hip fracture. Standing yoga postures and PhysicalMind Institute’s Standing Pilates® can be very helpful here.

DO resistance, cardiovascular, and flexibility training within safe guidelines.

DO focus on spine and torso extension. As our bodies give in to gravity we begin to round forward. It is crucial that we work constantly to stay upright with a gentle squeeze of the shoulder blades and a lovely lift of the breastbone.

DO be careful sneezing and coughing. Many fractures happen during forceful coughing and sneezing. Try to stand or sit with your back against something for support.

DO NOT flex your spine forward. Don’t bend over to tie your shoes or pick something up off the floor. Don’t round forward while getting in and out of bed. And never roll around on your spine! Yes, spinal flexion is healthy for healthy bones. It is completely contraindicated for low bone density. As you can see in the fracture image, the micro fractures occur in the front of the spine and are irreversible. Do you want to look like a round ball all the time for the rest of your life? I know I don’t!

DO NOT roll around on your spine. I know, I’m saying it again, but this is so important! And I am scared to tell you how many clients with osteoporosis I have seen who have been given extreme flexion exercises by certified Pilates teachers in studios.

DO NOT forcefully twist your spine. Be nice to your spine. Forceful torsion will hurt.

DO NOT do sit ups or crunches! Remember the flexion discussion above? A good Pilates teacher can show you many abdominal strengthening alternatives.

DO NOT take your leg far out to the side of your body (abduction). This where many a hip fracture has occurred.

The Food Digestion Process

If you have ever wondered about the food digestion process, here is a general overview of the steps involved.

Digestion starts as you chew your food. Saliva mixes with this food and starts the breakdown process. From here, the food goes down the esophagus and enters the stomach, where it is mixed with enzymes, mucus, and hydrochloric acid, which kills germs and softens the food. The enzyme pepsin now breaks down proteins. The food ends up in the stomach as a watery substance known as chyme. This chyme then travels through the pyloric sphincter to the duodenum. Here, alkali counteracts the acid quality of the chyme. Pepsin only works in an acid arena, so now its action halts. Enzymes of an alkaline nature now take charge.

Now we arrive at the pancreas and the gallbladder, which are connected by two tubes. Fat is emulsified in the chyme by bile. Enzymes from the pancreas go forth and work on this fat, while some work on breaking down proteins and carbohydrates. The hormone insulin is sent into the duodenum from the pancreas. Insulin controls the sugar content of the bloodstream and cell utilization of energy. At this point, the ingested food has been broken down quite a bit, but no assimilation of nutrients into the body has taken place. When this material arrives at the small intestine, its rich blood supply and lymph start to ferry nutrients to the body as a whole.

The food now has been broken down into amino acids (protein), sugars (carbohydrates), and triglycerides (fats), which are generally sent through the lymphatic system’s lacteal ducts as opposed to the blood. The amino acids and sugars are carried to the liver by the blood vessels, where some are used and some are stored. Now, the eliminative process begins with the large intestine or the bowel. Note that you are only as healthy as your intestinal health. This is the main area for the forming of free radicals in the body. The intestinal lining absorbs the mineral salts and water of the now mostly non-usable material. This material is now more solid, or condensed, and forms the feces, or stool, that is eliminated through the anus.
