Herbal Help For Smokers

I’ve been told that it is at least as hard to quit smoking as it is to get off heroin. That’s a scary thought. I do know that it’s extremely difficult, my mother had a hard time doing so. She did quit and you can, too. Many of the herbs I’m going to suggest have important actions on the lungs. There are also a few herbs that have warnings to go with them.

Licorice: If you want something to soothe your throat, this is a good choice. Many smokers like to chew on twigs of licorice to replace a cigarette, and it could work. However, you have to be careful with it. People with high blood pressure and/or diabetes should use another method as it can make both worse. A good alternative could be birch, though you should watch out for sores in the mouth. Birch is the choice of many people in the Appalachians.

Mullein: Both the leaf and flower of this plant are good for the lungs. As you are trying to quit smoking, I don’t recommend burning it, though that is one method for treating asthma. A tea, perhaps sweetened by licorice, could be useful in caring for your lungs.

Pleurisy Root: The common name of this plant gives you the hint that it is good for your lungs. Pleurisy is an inflammation of the lining of the lungs. Another benefit of this plant is that it contains a chemical that can help heal tissue injuries. It’s a relative of comfrey, but it does not contain the chemical that causes kidney and liver damage.

Lobelia: This plant is on my “do not use” list. It makes attractive ground cover but should not be ingested. It is one of the most violent purgatives in herbal lore. It also shuts down the central nervous system. If you use it, you could die.

Your spice rack contains a couple of herbs that may be helpful in your quest to stop smoking. That comes in handy if you don’t happen to have an herb store nearby.

Black Pepper: Studies indicate that the vapor of black pepper can stop the craving for cigarettes. Not only that, it may actually help with the irritability that can be a problem for those suffering from cigarette withdrawal. A lot of care has to be taken if you are using the essential oils of black pepper, as it can burn you.

Ginger Root: Withdrawal from nicotine can cause nausea, and ginger root is a well known home remedy for several different types of nausea. If you are on blood thinners, check with your doctor before using ginger.

Another tip that comes from my mother is chewing gum. It gives the mouth something to do and helps to break the habits that form around smoking.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. When our body comes in the contact of sunlight there may be chances of skin cancers. and it results in sunburn and blistering. There are three forms of skin cancer:

o Squamous Cell Carcinoma – This skin cancer may appear as a bump or as a red, scaly patch. It is the second most common skin cancer found in fair-skinned persons and is typically found on the rim of the ear, face lips and mouth.

o Malignant Melanoma – This is the most deadly of all skin cancers and it is estimated that 7,300 Americans die annually from melanoma. Like the less aggressive skin cancers, it is almost always curable when detected in its early stages. Excessive sun exposure, particularly sunburn, is the most important preventable cause of melanoma.

o Basal Cell Carcinoma – This skin cancer usually appears as a small, fleshy bump or nodule, most often on the head, neck and hands. Occasionally these cancers may appear on the trunk as red patches.

Skin cancer is treated with an array of surgical procedures that are dependent on the need of the individual patient. Early detection and removal offer the best chance for a cure. The best defense against skin cancer is to avoid over exposure to sunlight (including tanning), which is the main cause of skin cancer, especially when it results in sunburn and blistering. Actually every one knows that we are facing problem of ultraviolet rays due to losing ozone layer in our atmosphere. And seek shade between 10am and 4pm when ultraviolet rays are the most intense and apply sunscreen.

If you are facing any kind of skin problem then you should go for dermatologist. So that they can diagnose your skin problem at time and give you treatment according to the problem.

Are You Allergic to Cigarette Smoke?

Is just one breath of smoke enough to ruin your day? As soon as the person next to you lights up, the first thing to cross your mind is the unpleasant memory of your last clash with secondhand smoke and the runny nose, sneezing, and congestion that followed. For some, the reaction to cigarette smoke closely resembles an allergic reaction, which leads them to believe that they have “smoke allergies”.

There are a lot of “smoke allergy” myths that actually make it harder to properly treat your condition. This article will help you tell if determine whether you are affected by “smoke allergies” and what you can do to better protect yourself from the illnesses associated with smoke exposure.

#1 Myth: “Allergic to Smoke”

No one is really allergic to smoke. A large number of people insist that they are allergic to smoke created by cigarettes or cigars, but the truth is that they have having an allergy-like reaction due to other health conditions. Understanding exactly why you feel like you are having allergy attack when around a smoker is the key to understanding how to prevent future symptoms.

Why do I say that there is no such thing as a smoke allergy? Because technically smoke is not an allergen – but it is an irritant. This little difference explains why most people feel no relief when they take antihistamine allergy medicine after exposure to smoke. The key to avoiding the problems caused by cigarette smoke is determining what type of sensitivity you have and how best to treat it.

Who is Prone to “Smoke Allergies”?

  • Children and Infants
  • Elderly Persons
  • People with allergy history (anyone with allergies, asthma, eczema, etc)
  • People exposed to heavy smoke for long periods of time

Sometimes people who are sensitive to tobacco smoke will also experience allergy-like symptoms when they encounter strong odors, perfumes, weather changes or temperature changes.

Symptoms of Cigarette Sensitivity

For some people, exposure to tobacco smoke can cause a list of symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Watery, burning eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Post nasal drip
  • Congestion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache

These symptoms appear shortly after exposure to cigarette smoke and last for hours afterward. In addition to these symptoms, people who are in smoky environments on a daily basis are more likely to experience constant respiratory infections like sinusitis and bronchitis as well as the development of wheezing and asthma.

Tobacco Smoke Exposure

A lit cigarette is capable of releasing over 4,000 different chemicals into the air (80 of these are known or suspected carcinogens). Sometimes avoiding situations where people are smoking is almost impossible. Often a family member will smoke indoors, or a public place like a bar or restaurant will allow smoking. Depending on the severity of your reaction, just the smell of smoke on someone’s clothing or in a room where someone had smoked can cause irritation. So, even though avoidance of tobacco smoke is the best method to prevent “smoke allergies”, it may not be a practical solution.

Two Main Types of Smoke Sensitivity

The best way to treat your “allergy” to smoke is by first identifying what sort of sensitivity you are experiencing. There are two forms of smoke sensitivity:

  • Smoke Aggravating Underlying Allergies: your body is weakened by smoke and begins reacting to all the tiny bits of pollen, dust and dander that usually would not have been a problem.
  • Vasomotor Rhinitis: this is a condition that has the exact same symptoms as allergic rhinitis (or nasal allergies), but cannot be treated by antihistamine allergy medicine.

Smoke-Aggravated Allergies:

An allergen is a small particle that is made up of proteins that the body mistakes for a dangerous intruder like a virus or other germ. Smoke contains tiny tar ash particles (you can see these particles in the form of a white cloud created by burning tobacco). But tar ash particles are not the same as a true allergen because they are not protein based, but a form of carbon.

Instead of being tagged as an allergen, smoke particles are classified as an irritant. Irritants can cause you quite a bit of discomfort, worsen illnesses like asthma and allergies, and cause other serious health problems. So, in medical terms, no one can really be allergic to smoke, but they can suffer complications to their existing allergies or other illness.

If you have allergies or allergic asthma, smoke can trigger an allergic reaction because it is putting an extra strain on your body and immune system. The speck of cat dander drifting through the air that would not have normally set off a violent reaction; but with the addition of tobacco smoke, your body can no longer handle the allergens. Asthma becomes dangerous when mixed with exposure to tobacco smoke-even deadly for some.

You are likely to experience complications to existing allergies if:

  1. You know that you are allergic to other things like pollen, pets, mold or dust mites.
  2. You have eczema or food allergies.

Treatment

  • Avoid as many situations as you can where you are exposed to smoke.
  • See an allergist to optimize your existing allergy treatment, or see if you have developed new allergies.
  • Run an air purifier to reduce the number of allergens in the air. Even a smaller, portable air filter like a home smoke eater is effective at removing allergens in guest rooms of smoking family members.

Vasomotor Rhinitis:

Vasomotor Rhinitis is a form of inflammation and irritation of the nasal area as well as the throat and eyes. Seasonal or indoor allergies are called “allergic rhinitis”. This condition is different from the allergic type because it is not caused by allergens. For this reason, Vasomotor Rhinitis is sometimes called “non-allergic rhinitis”. It causes many of the same symptoms that an allergic reaction would, but is caused by highly sensitive or excessive amounts of blood vessels in the delicate tissue of the sinus area. The symptoms you experience are trigger by your nervous system rather than allergens.

What this means is while another person may be able to tolerate cigarette smoke, a person with vasomotor rhinitis will experience a lot of discomfort with the same amount of smoke. So you are not overreacting when you complain about even small amounts of smoke – these small amounts REALLY ARE affecting you more severely than those around you.

In addition to cigarette smoke, often strong odors or weather conditions will also cause symptoms, so you may find that many aspects of your environment cause allergy-like symptoms. Some people even have allergic rhinitis and vasomotor rhinitis simultaneously.

You are likely to have vasomotor rhinitis if:

  1. You are highly sensitive to other elements like perfume, strong odors, changes in weather, changes in temperature, or even spicy foods.
  2. Walking into a slightly warmer (or cooler) room makes your nose runny or painfully stuffy.
  3. Antihistamine medications do not alleviate the symptoms.

Treatment

  • Avoid as many situations as possible where your condition might be aggravated. This includes smoke, as well as some other vasomotor rhinitis triggers like wearing perfume, burning scented candles, etc.
  • Talk to your doctor about treatment options. Some over the counter medications like oral decongestants and saline nasal sprays may offer you some relief. Some prescription medications that have been proven effective are antihistamine nasal sprays (as opposed to oral antihistamines which typically have no effect on vasomotor rhinitis), anti-drip anticholinergic nasal sprays and corticosteroid nasal sprays.
  • Limit your exposure to smoke and smoke odor as this is often the cause of many vasomotor rhinitis cases. Use an air purifier like a home smoke eater to minimize airborne pollutants.

A Note to Those with Existing Allergies:

Inhaling even small amounts of smoke over a long period of time can actually cause you to develop new allergies or even asthma. In young children, second hand tobacco smoke inhalation greatly increases the likeliness of developing allergies when they get older. If you live with a smoker, you are likely to have more cases of bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, and other respiratory illnesses.

The best thing you can do for yourself make your living space a zero-tolerance smoke area. If this is not an option, you might want to consider an air purifier as an investment in your health.

Some of the symptoms of sinusitis (sinus infection) can closely resemble the vasomotor rhinitis and allergic rhinitis described in this article. Be sure to see your doctor to help you diagnose your condition if tobacco smoke has you feeling under the weather.

Remember: always be sure to talk to your doctor or allergist about your symptoms and treatment.

Combat Self Defense

Violence against humans in the form of destruction, conquering, terrorism, and assaulting by other humans is as old as mankind itself. To deal with this violence man created fighting systems. Developed from street fighting moves these fighting systems evolved into many different types of martial arts. The development of a specific style of martial art depends on how the fighting systems were modified and influenced by cultures and traditions. In Okinawa Combat Karate and combat Self-defense techniques were developed and modified into an organized martial art by the people of Okinawa for a way of personal protection and a way of defending and protecting their culture from Samurai.

Traditional combat Karate becoming popular over the years has developed into competitive Sport Karate. This is called modern day Karate. There are major differences between modern day Karate and Combat self-defense. Modern day Karate has been modified for sport eliminating the dangerous Combat Karate techniques. Modern day sport Karate techniques should not be used for combat self-defense. A lot of the techniques used in sport Karate lack power and accuracy diminishing the effect of striking power if used in combat self-defense. Combat self-defense techniques were designed and developed to incur physical injury by disabling, crippling, bruising, maiming, or even killing opponents.

Combat self defense techniques consist of joint bending, throwing, breathing, applying pressure to pressure points, choking, striking vital areas, defense against hand grabs, and defense against weapons.

A defender executing joint bending techniques applies pressure to joints in a way as to leverage weight and balance controlling the opponent’s movements to their advantage. If the defender executes the techniques correctly any movement by the opponent or additional applied pressure by the defender will cause intense pain, possible dislocation, or broken bones.

Throwing involves physically sending the opponent to the ground by repositioning their balance and weight. This technique may include joint bending, hands, legs arms and hips. Executed properly and the defender uses very little energy and strength. The smallest person can throw an extremely large person.

During the execution of Combat self-defense techniques breathing becomes an important criteria for stability and strength. Breathing should be done from the pit of the stomach. This helps in controlling anxiety and promoting relaxation.

Techniques applied to pressure points involve the knowledge of pressure points on the body. The pressure points are vital areas that are sensitive to touching by pressing these areas with the fingers or striking causing disabling pain. Some areas are easier to strike while other areas are a little more accessible using the fingers. Some vital areas where fingers have easy access are the eyes, carotid in the neck, subclavian at the neck base, and the brachial on the inside of the bicep.

Choking is one of the easiest techniques to execute with minimal training. Choking generally involves a strangle hold on the neck using a forearm or the hand. Using the choke hold correctly and an opponent can be rendered unconscious in 5 to 10 seconds. Done incorrectly and the technique could take minutes.

Striking vital areas involves striking the soft areas of the body. Striking these areas is extremely dangerous because paralysis, severe injury or death can occur.

Some of the most common vital striking areas:

1. Cushy part above the chin with fore fist

2. Fore fist to solar plexus basically boney area and can knock the wind out of an opponent.

3. Side of the neck. Strike with open hand (Knife Hand)

4. Fore fist to the bridge of the nose

5. Back fist to the bridge of the nose

6. Strike groin with palm of hand or front kick.

Training is a necessity if you want to learn to defend yourself. Your subconscious and body must form a memory that you can rely on to defend yourself during a stressful violent confrontation. Look at the navy seals, marines, or any special forces on their training discipline. Experienced military trainers spend hours training individuals for highly stressed combat situations. The same is true for self defense training. You must train to develop the subconscious and physical aspect. You will have to put time into studying some form of martial art.

Best Foods That Prevent Cold Sores

If you are searching for foods that prevent cold sores, you are wise indeed. Nutrition is the most effective and natural way to eliminate cold sore outbreaks.

In this article you will learn about delicious foods that prevent cold sores. You will also discover foods that cause cold sores. Best of all, in about 2 minutes, you will know how best to balance the two for your personal needs. Check it out.

Cold sores are the visible result of the herpes virus replication process. The virus enters a cell on the surface of your face and forces that cell to create copies of itself. Then the original virus destroys the cell to release hoards of new virus. The open cold sore is the result of millions of cells in close proximity that have been destroyed like this.

Lysine and arginine are two amino acids much talked about in their relation to cold sores. Amino acids are small fractions of protein that your body needs everyday to stay in tiptop shape. To create new cold sore virus, the cell needs certain materials. One necessary building block for herpes virus replication is arginine.

Lysine has been proven very effective in treating and preventing cold sores. Lysine prevents cold sores mainly by replacing some of the arginine in your cells. If you have a higher lysine than arginine content in the cells, you are less likely to get cold sores.

Foods that prevent cold sores are rated by how high the ratio of lysine to arginine content. Most foods contain both lysine and arginine. If there is the same amount of both, the ratio is 1 to 1. If there is twice as much lysine as arginine, then the ratio is 2 to 1. This is an excellent ratio for preventing cold sores.

So the strategy here is to increase the ratio of lysine over arginine in your diet. For example: cheddar cheese, in one ounce or 28 grams, contains 588 milligrams of lysine and 267 milligrams of arginine. This is a ratio of lysine to arginine of 2.2 to 1. Excellent.

Here is a list of foods that prevent cold sores. Most meat, particularly beef, fish, turkey and chicken. Products such as eggs, cheese, yogurt, milk and other dairy products are also quite high in lysine and often offer a 2 to 1 ratio. Ricotta cheese is unusually high in lysine. Soy beans, soy products and brewers yeast will also provide you higher lysine intake.

SPECIAL NOTE. Flounder is very rich in lysine. Some people use flounder as a total cold sore treatment. When getting a cold sore, they will eat one pound, or 300 grams, of flounder. This provides 12 grams of lysine. Lysine from food is 200% to 400% more usable by the body than the lysine in supplements. You would have to take 50 lysine capsules, at least, to equal the flounder, which would be crazy. Your body knows the difference.

Here is a short list of foods that cause cold sores. These foods have high content of arginine to lysine. Most nuts, including peanuts, almonds, cashews and walnuts. Grains, such as wheat and oats. Seeds, such as sunflower and sesame, are arginine providers. Also avoid most beans, peas and lima beans. Most vegetables are higher in arginine than lysine, such as carrots, radishes, eggplant, and cabbage. Chocolate is high in arginine.

STOP. Before you give up right here, let me say two things in closing.

Do not hesitate to take lysine capsules just because this form of lysine is not as well absorbed. Many control outbreaks with the capsules alone. And do not let a special cold sore diet rule your life. You will find relief from cold sores and still enjoy life by testing and finding the balance and combinations that best suit your lifestyle. By taking lysine supplements, you can eat more of the high arginine foods, like chocolate.

It is all about balance. Yes, you can eat all foods you enjoy, as long as you combine them wisely with supplements and sufficient foods that prevent cold sores.

To cure disease, you must have the desire to eliminate the disease and disharmony in your life, and with your search have come up with the cure. This is where and how you will heal yourself and live abundantly.

Flu Shot Complications

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, commonly referred to as the CDC, advises that the best way to lower your chances of getting the flu is to get an annual flu shot. Complications and allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations are considered rare and “worth the risk” for some people, particularly elderly people who live in nursing home situations.

Allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations can be caused by any of the ingredients in the shot, but most often occur in people who are allergic to eggs. The shot contains dead influenza viruses that were grown in chicken eggs. It is believed, at least by the CDC, that most flu shot complications occur in people who have an allergy to chicken eggs.

The CDC advises that the signs of allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations can include breathing problems, hoarseness or wheezing, hives, paleness, weakness, accelerated heartbeat, or dizziness and if they occur, it will be within the first few hours following the flu shot. Complications, other than the common side effects (redness or swelling at the injection site, low grade fever and body aches), should be reported to a doctor right away and the doctor should file a “Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System” form. A severe allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations can be life threatening and anyone who has had an allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations in the past should consult a doctor before taking the annual flu shot.

Those people who are allergic to mercury or thimerosal may have an allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations. Thimerosal is used in the manufacturing process of all flu vaccines and is used as a preservative in most. While the CDC states that there is “no convincing evidence” that thimerosal can cause severe flu shot complications, many doctors and researchers believe that mercury presence in flu shots can lead to autism and Alzheimer’s. The evidence concerning the link between mercury in flu shots and autism was convincing enough for New York state to ban vaccines containing thimerosal that are intended for use in pregnant women and children. But, even those flu shots which are labeled preservative free still contain trace amounts of mercury. It is generally not believed that these trace amounts can cause flu shot complications.

One of the flu shot complications that occurs rarely is a condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome. It is not considered an allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations, but it may be associated with them. Guillain-Barre syndrome symptoms include fever and muscle weakness and sometimes results in   paralysis  and permanent nerve damage. The CDC advises that anyone who has had Guillain-Barre syndrome in the past, regardless of whether it was linked to flu shot complications, should consult their doctor before taking the annual vaccine.

Because severe allergic reaction to flu shot vaccinations are rare, the CDC believes that the benefits associated with the vaccine outweigh the risks associated with possible flu shot complications. The vaccine is considered to be 70-90% effective in preventing influenza in healthy persons under 65, 30-70% effective in preventing hospitalization due to influenza in elderly persons living outside of nursing homes, 50-60% effective in preventing hospitalization from influenza in elderly nursing home residents and 80% effective in preventing death from influenza in elderly nursing home residents.

Acid Reflux Syndrome – Giving Your Discomfort a Name

Acid reflux occurs when the acid content in your stomach flow back up to the esophagus. This can be rather painful and cause the lower part of your esophagus to become inflamed. Your doctor may call it Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), but most of us call it acid reflux, reflux or heartburn.

Heartburn and Other Symptoms

Heartburn, the primary acid reflux syndrome symptom, can spread to your jaw, neck, arms or back. You may also have difficulty swallowing, spitting and vomiting. You might also experience cramping, hoarseness, sore throat, pain below your breastbone, salivating more than usual, coughing or shortness of breath. You could even find that hearburn causes bad breath. Usually, acid reflux syndrome symptoms appear when you lie down after eating. You may find that simply sitting up relieves the acid reflux syndrome symptoms.

Frequent occurrences of acid reflux can threaten your health. Recurrence can lead to reflux esophagitis, narrowing of the esophagus or esophageal ulcer. Acid reflux syndrome can even lead to Barrett’s syndrome, a change in your esophageal lining that can develop into esophageal cancer.

Foods and Medications that CauseAcid Reflux Syndrome Symptoms

Acid reflux occurs when your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) functions poorly. Normally this sphincter remains tightly caused. However, it may malfunction and open when it should not under certain circumstances. For instance, the esophageal sphincter may open after you eat a heavy meal or if you lie down soon after you eat anything.

Greasy foods, peppermint and chocolate can relax the lower esophageal sphinter and increase your odds of reflux. Alcohol, caffeine and nicotine can also aggravate acid reflux syndrome. Certain drugs such as calcium channel blockers, meperidine, diazepam, prostaglandins, morphine and nitrate heart medication may also cause the LES to open.

Who is Affected by Acid Reflux Syndrome

Anyone can experience acid reflux. However, you are more likely to be affected by acid reflux syndrome if you are overweight or if you suffer from hiatal hernia or scleroderma (hardening of the skin and connective tissue). Women reportedly have a higher occurrence of acid reflux during pregnancy.

Medical Diagnostics

Diagnostic examinations for acid reflux syndrome include x-rays. Your physician may perform a closer examination known as an esophagoscopy. This is done by inserting a flexible viewing tube into your esophagus. A biopsy may also be taken during an esophagoscopy. An esophageal manometry can measure pressure in your lower esophageal sphincter or the Bernstein test measures how much acid is in your esophagus.

A recommended treatment for your acid reflux syndrome could be elevating the head of your bed. Doing so keeps the stomach acid from flowing into your esophagus while you are asleep. As already mentioned, you should avoid fatty foods, coffee and alcohol because they aggravate acid reflux.

If these remedies fail to provide relief, you may try taking antacids after eating and again at bedtime. More aggressive medications include histamine receptor blockers (for reduce stomach acids), prokinetic or motily drugs (for making the LES to close more tightly), proton-pump inhibitors, and omepraxole or lansoprazole (for healing esophageal inflammation).

If these treatment methods prove to be ineffective and your acid reflux syndrome becomes severe, surgery may by your only option. However, less than 25% of acid reflux patents require surgery.

Arthritis of the Knee – Types and Treatment

Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves symptoms like pain, inflammation, and swelling in is the area where two bones meet.

The knee joint, for example, is where the ends of lower leg bones (the tibia and the fibula) and the thighbone (the femur) meet. Likewise, the hip joint is formed between the thighbone (femoral head) and a concave portion of the pelvis (the acetabulum).

Medically known as the tibiofemoral joint, knee joint is the largest joint in the body and is most frequently affected by arthritis.

This joint disease affects more than 46 million American adults and this number is expected to increase to 67 million by the year 2030. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), about 580,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed every year in the U.S. and the number is growing.

Types
There are three major types of arthritis that may affect the knee joint- Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Post-Traumatic Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA): Also referred to as the “wear and tear” arthritis, Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, affecting 33 million people in the United States.

It is a condition that is caused by the combination of several factors, including overuse of joints, obesity, or aging. Also called ‘degenerative arthritis’, osteoarthritis is usually a slowly progressive degenerative disease in which the cartilage covering the bone ends gradually wears away.

It usually causes pain and limited motion, and often occurs in joints that bear weight, such as the knees, hips, feet, and spine. It is most prevalent among middle-aged and older people with active lifestyles.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): It is an inflammatory type of arthritis that can destroy the joint cartilage. It is a systemic, autoimmune condition that causes the body’s immune system to produce substances that attack the body’s soft-tissues and joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis can occur at any age and generally affects both large and small joints in the body as well as the spine. Swelling, pain, and stiffness are often quite pronounced in rheumatoid arthritis, even when the joint is not used. The condition affects approximately 1.3 million Americans, and about 75% of them are women, according to the American College of Rheumatology.

Post-traumatic Arthritis: This form of joint arthritis can develop after any kind of physical injury to the knee in which the bone and cartilage were deteriorated. After the injury, the cartilage separates from the joint and bone and shatter into several fragments which float around freely and cause severe pain and joint stiffness.

A military injury, injury from sports, an accident, a fall, or any other source of physical trauma can damage the joint surface cartilage (osteoarthritis), destructing the mechanism of the joint and making it wear out. This disease may not surface until several years after a fracture, ligament injury, or meniscus tear.

The post-traumatic arthritis symptoms include severe joint pain, swelling, fluid accumulation in the joint, tenderness, and decreased tolerance for walking, sports, climbing stairs and other physical activities which stress the joint. It affects about 5.6 million people in the United States. The risk may be minimized by preventing injuries.

Treatment Options
The treatment for arthritis of the knee starts with nonsurgical measures, including lifestyle modifications; exercise; supportive devices; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines; heat or ice treatments and elastic bandages.

But when arthritis reaches to a point where nonsurgical treatments have failed to relieve pain and other symptoms, surgical treatment will be considered.

There are a number of surgical treatments that can offer lasting relief. Cleaning out or repairing torn cartilage and reconstructing or replacing the worn out joint surfaces are the common surgical treatments for arthritis in the joint.

Is Your Teen Obsessed With Video Games?

This article is meant to provide some guidance for parents of a teen who might be obsessed with computer and/or video games.

Let’s face it: games can be addictive. The game designers use every trick in the book not only to make a game interesting, but to hold attention while completing tasks, leveling up, or scoring more points.

Yes, games can be addictive, but obsession is something else. I am concerned about any teen that tends to avoid normal activities in order to withdraw into continual game play.

How do you know the attraction to games has gone too far? Think about normal human development. If a teen is neglecting other interests in life in favor of gaming activities, to the point where they withdraw from society, it could be a sign of obsession.

It’s not always easy to detect the signs of teen game obsession, especially in its early stages. As it starts with an interest, and grows into an addiction, we may want to confront the teen about their behavior. This is where we must be careful not to let a discussion escalate into a battle.

Many kids are quick to learn debating skills, and if we start off the discussion in an accusing tone, there will be more difficulty. Instead of questioning their motives for repetitive game play, focus on praise for any good behavior, and stick to the facts. Teens will often rebut our concerns with logic and their arguments may seem convincing. They may point out our own flaws as parents and make comparisons to other kids who are allowed to play games for hours each day.

As parents we sometimes think that since we know more than our kids, we should be able to direct their ways and not admit to our own flaws. Strenuous rebuttals from our teens may convince us that maybe 5 hours spent in front of a video game isn’t that bad. After all, we spend that much time on the phone, at our computers, or using our Blackberries or other gadgets.

The important thing to do for your teen is to monitor their time on the video games. Don’t let your logical teen argue with you about gaming, they might win! Instead, show that you care about their life by restricting their time spent gaming, before it gets out of hand.

It’s much better, and easier to deal with, if you do the monitoring and take restrictive measures before gaming displaces everything that a teen used to care about. Set limits on game time when you notice your teen’s social life starting to drop off, when their grades are suffering, or when they are not getting enough sleep.

If you get severe reactions to the restrictions, it’s time to use some tough love. Your teen may have a tantrum, start cursing, or even try to get physical or run away from home. These strong reactions can be signs that the obsession has a hold on their common sense. You must hold fast to the rules you decide on, so that your teen has a chance to lead a normal life!

The key to being able to help your teen is to be aware of behavioral changes that may signal they are on a wrong path. An obsession with gaming can produce impatience with situations and with people. They may be quick to anger, and react to situations without thinking about the consequences. When you see an increase in gaming, and an increase in these danger signs, it’s surely time to restrict the game time.

There are a lot of debates about the effects of video games on children, and adults. Some say that the kinds of bad behaviors described above are the natural consequence of games that require those behaviors to win or to advance to higher levels of game play. They say that a player is being trained to react in a manner that leads to these bad behaviors. Regardless of your stance on these debates, it’s important to look out for signs of behavioral change in your teen, and take appropriate action to control their game play.

Don’t just try to restrict game time without substituting other activities. If possible, try to encourage physical activities because these may be lacking in gaming fanatics. Consider various sports such as baseball, skating, swimming, or dance. Also, you may want to encourage your teen to make more time for activities that engage the mind in different ways, such as music, art, or theater.

Watch for those behavioral changes, and take action to help your teen get back on track. Don’t deny them some gaming time, but channel their time into a diversity of activities that will lead to a fulfilling lifestyle in the long run.

A Head Start on Treating the Shingles Patient

You have a new patient… They don’t have the shingles rash…at least not yet… But they do have:

  • Nerve pain of unknown origin;
  • Highly sensitive, tingling or burning skin;
  • Pain in the left side of the chest and heart attack has been ruled out;
  • Pain in the neck or back that begins to radiate down one limb or around your chest;
  • Body aches, fever and chills and flu and meningitis have been eliminated as a diagnosis.

They could very well be in the early stages of shingles. Before that nasty shingles rash appears. Once you do a thorough examination and determine exactly where their nerve pain originates, congratulate them for being so proactive and getting a head start on treatment. Shingles is not life threatening but it is extremely painful. And, without proper treatment early on, your shingles patient could develop postherpetic neuropathy caused by damage to the nerves in the area affected by shingles. By getting to you early, they’ve significantly lessened their chances of developing postherpetic neuropathy. To lessen the possibility of postherpetic neuropathy, early treatment is a must.

Treatment Regimen

If you actually manage to start treatment for the shingles patient before the shingles rash appears, the first step should be to alleviate their pain as much as possible. Then evaluate their spine and the skeletal system paying particular attention to the area where they’re experiencing pain. Chances are, the patient’s nerves are being affected by joint dysfunction or subluxation. Once you care for their spine and take some of the pressure off the affected nerves, you can begin to realign the skeletal system so that the nerves are not being adversely affected. That will not only help with their immediate pain, it will decrease the chance of long term nerve damage leading to postherpetic neuralgia. In addition to a chiropractic adjustment and/or physical therapy to realign the spine and support proper functioning of the nervous system, provide a nutrition plan to give your patient’s body what it needs to heal.

Stress Management is Vital

Just as your shingles patients need the right diet in order to heal, they need to get plenty of rest and avoid stress as much as possible. Provide them with counseling and educational materials to help them learn to utilize stress management tools to help avoid or limit stress. The effects of stress can make a bad medical situation even worse. Some suggested techniques are:

  • Exercising regularly.
  • Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, tai chi, yoga or meditation. Any of these will calm the mind and, in turn, calm the body and nerves.
  • Finding a hobby that will take the mind off postherpetic neuropathy pain.

The Final Step in Nerve Protection/Repair

Once you’ve begun the adjustment process for your shingles patient, they’re eating the proper diet to support their body and their stress is under control, the final step is repair of any nerve damage. This is where the treatment protocol we have developed can move the healing process along quickly. This allows the nerves to communicate again and that, in itself, starts the process of reversing the damage of peripheral neuropathy. As an added bonus, this treatment protocol can be used in the patient’s own home, on their own, once you’ve started the treatment and established a base line for them to build on. This will be particularly helpful if the patient actually develops postherpetic neuropathy and prolonged treatment is needed.

The combination of manual therapy, nutrition, stress management and nerve stimulation is showing great promise in helping shingles patients and those unfortunate enough to develop postherpetic neuropathy return to a pain free life, without the long term debilitating effects of postherpetic neuropathy.

We hope this information helps you implement a strong protocol for treating the postherpetic neuropathy patient.

When you are ready to provide these services, let them know you’re there to help them.

Sore Throats: Who Gets Antibiotics?

Most patients that walk into a doctor’s office with a  sore   throat  expect to be given something to make them feel better. Many are surprised, and even angry, when they are told that they will not be walking out with antibiotics. How do physicians, like myself, make this decision? Is it simply up to my whim or current mood that day? In fact, there are some fairly simple rules that help me determine who will benefit from antibiotics. If armed with this information in advance, patients can have much more realistic expectations of what their physician will tell them in the office.

Infection or Not

Many falsely assume that pain in their throat means they have an infection (or pharyngitis). This is not necessarily the case as there are multiple non-infectious reasons to have a  sore   throat . I usually ask patients about symptoms such as fever, throat drainage, and itchy or watery eyes to determine if they indeed have an infection or something else such as allergies. If I determine that the patient does not have an infection, then I will simply prescribe symptomatic relief such with medicines such as menthol lozenges, Chloraseptic spray, or salt water gargles.

Bacterial vs. Viral

After I decide that a patient has pharyngitis, then the next step is to determine if a bacteria or virus is to blame. Bacterial infection (more commonly called strep throat) would warrant antibiotics while viral infection calls for rest, fluids, salt gargles, and symptomatic treatment like Tylenol. Fortunately, criteria have been developed to help make this determination, termed the Centor criteria. These are named for the investigator that developed the criteria (original article here). The criteria are as follows:

Temperature greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit

Tonsillar exudates (plaques that can be seen on the tonsils)

Tender, enlarged neck lymph nodes

No cough present

If one or no criteria are present, then it is likely viral. If two or three are present, then the patient should undergo a rapid strep test to determine if antibiotics are needed. If all four criteria are present, then the patient can simply be treated with antibiotics.

Believe it or not, it is that simple in many cases. With this information in hand, you should be much better equipped to have a good conversation with your doctor about your illness. Try not to smile too much when your doctor starts to go over this information with you. He doesn’t know that you’re already an expert!

Low Level Laser Therapy For Pain – LLLT

Low Level Laser Therapy or LLLT is a medical treatment commonly used to treat pain, joint disorders and some wound healing. It is most often used over joints and nerves. It uses lighted diodes to change the cellular function. There have been many clinical testings that show that LLLT is effective in providing pain relief for all types of problems.

There are several conditions that can cause pain that Low-Level Laser Therapy can help to relieve or treat. Some of the most common problems it has been used in treating are:

  • Tendonitis
  • Painful joints
  • Neck and back pain
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sinusitis
  • Tonsillitis
  • Vertigo
  • TMJ
  • Chronic back pain
  • Pain and injury from trauma
  • Reduces Inflammation
  • Migraines and headaches

There are many different things that low-level laser therapy is used for but it is most effective in the treatment of all types of pain. From a slight nagging pain to the more chronic pain that never leaves you. It has also been approved for treatment of helping to heal wounds and ulcers.

LLLT has also been proven to reduce inflammation. It is useful in the treatments of inflammation of skin conditions such as acne and eczema. Low-Level Laser Therapy has also been used in the treatment of migraines, hearing loss and even the treatment of some scars.

This type of therapy is also being used for the treatment of hair loss. While it does seem to help some other types of skin inflammation and wounds it is primarily used for the treatment of acute and chronic pain in the body.

While the theory of exactly how low-level laser therapy works has not been officially stated, the light given off by the lasers during light therapy causes photochemical reactions within the cells that have been targeted. It also has been suggested that it helps to control and reduce pain due to increasing the blood flow to the area and lowering the levels of several types of prostaglandin that cause stress and pain in the cells. It also increases adenosine triphosphate in the mitochondria which produces more oxygen. It also produces ATP which promotes relief of painful sensations in the cells.

The great thing about the use of low-level laser therapy is that it is painless. It can be used at any time. It also provides fast relief for these painful symptoms. It greatly reduces your healing time by providing cell stimulation to increase and promote the healing of cells. It is also 100% safe as the level of the laser is low so that it can not damage any of the cells that are being treated. It is not toxic, non-invasive and has virtually no long-term side effects to the patient. Application is very easy and very quick.

Treatment with these lasers will depend on your condition. Some people have relief in as little as one time, while others have to be treated 8 to 10 times for the pain to go away or decrease.
