The first symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may be swelling and morning stiffness or just a general aching of the joints. In 90 percent of women, the first areas affected by rheumatoid arthritis are the feet and hands. The disease often affects the wrist and the finger joints closest to the palm, as well as joints in the jaw, neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles and toes. Any joint in the body can be a target.

Inflammation can cause body wide symptoms such as low grade fever, flu like body aches, and a general feeling of not being well. Backpacks – Not Your Spine’s Best Friend

Alas, the new school year is here! On top of every child’s list of school supplies is a new backpack. While backpacks vary in their style, color and sizes, they all share one thing in common: they are detrimental to the health of your child’s spine. According to an article in a 1998 edition of the prestigious scientific journal Spine, by the time a young adult has graduated from high school, he or she has experienced at least one episode of back pain, due in part to the improper use of backpacks.

Children are carrying around excessive amounts of weight on their backs. In fact, a backpack can easily weigh upwards of 20 pounds. That kind of pressure on the back of a child in early adolescence can result in premature degeneration of the spine. But how do the backpacks cause so much damage? Backpacks cause postural shifts, which then may result in shifts in the alignment of the spine. Shifts of spinal vertebra are called vertebral subluxations (a.k.a. vertebral subluxation complex). Vertebral subluxations can lead to back and neck pain, muscular tension, muscular imbalance/asymmetry, decreased range of motion and early degeneration and arthritic changes of the spine.

When a child walks with a loaded backpack hanging off of one shoulder (let’s say the right side), they compensate by leaning towards the opposite direction. As a result, other areas of the body also compensate for the weight imbalance. Further compensations result in muscles working much harder on one side of the body versus the other. Take this scenario and repeat it on a weekly, daily, or monthly basis, and it is easy to see how this situation can snowball into a major problem. Similarly, take a look at your child from the side while they are wearing their backpack. You’ll quickly notice how their head becomes displaced forward, once again compensating for the excessive load that is being levied onto their spine.

As chiropractors that focus on the structural correction of the spine, we are now seeing a higher incidence of children and young adults with severe neck and back pain. What parents don’t often realize is that a child’s spine is still in its developmental stages. Considering that the human spine becomes far more stable in the mid to later teenage years, it is easy to understand how unnecessary pressure applied to the spine in pre-adolescence and adolescence can leave a permanent scar (no different than leaving a footprint in wet cement). 2. The backpack should have a structurally reinforced base. This will prevent unnecessary sagging commonly found in less expensive models.

3. When the child is preparing to put on the backpack, have them face the backpack when lifting it onto their shoulders.

4. Next, Have them bend at the knees, squat down and use their legs (not their back) to lift their backpacks (always lift with the legs).

5. Have the child slip one arm at a time underneath the straps, securing both straps comfortably around the shoulders.

6. Finally, make sure that all straps are adjusted so that the backpack is snug to the body.

As was mentioned previously, vertebral subluxation complex (vsc) is a condition in which the spine has been forced from its normal alignment. The consequences are far more reaching than just neck and back pain. Look through any anatomy book and you’ll see that the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) communicate with every cell, tissue, gland and organ of the body via the nerves that exit from the spine. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to realize that shifts in spinal alignment can easily interfere with the optimal function of the nervous system.

The other important cause of the  sore   throat  is the streptococcal infection which can be treated with antibiotics. There are a few certainty symptoms in order to establish the diagnose of bacterial  sore   throat :

1. High fever lasting more than 3 days is usually related to streptococcus.

3. Previous exposure to a sick person

If your child is younger than 3, has multiple cold symptoms, his throat is not extremely red, the general status is not very bad and throat pains occur only while coughing and not while swallowing or pressing the throat from the outside, it is more likely that he does nor suffer from a streptococcus infection.

Throat infections are contagious by saliva, coughing and contact with a sick person’s hands or personal items. The incubation period for viruses is normally 3 days to 3 weeks while streptococci need only 2-5 days to multiply inside the body. Patients or caretakers should not contact a doctor immediately after the apparition of a  sore   throat ; they should wait until eventual certain symptoms of a strep infection occur.

Often, the person with bad breath doesn’t really know that he or she has got bad breath. It takes someone else pointing it out to them, which makes it all the more embarrassing.

Acid-Alkaline Balance in Metabolic Dieting

In “The Acid-Alkaline Balance Diet,” author Felicia Drury Kliment claims that acidic wastes are responsible for all degenerative diseases. They cause disease by stimulating the body to produce excess stress hormones, triggering a series of biochemical reactions that make the body overly acidic. In such conditions, cells become oxygen-deprived, and adapt by becoming cancerous (cancer cells can survive without oxygen), aggressively taking up the few available nutrients and starving out normal cells. Kliment also claims that people can be divided into three metabolic types: fast, slow and balanced metabolisers, who should eat, respectively, a vegetarian, carnivorous or mixed diet in order to prevent acid waste build-up. She postulates that human cells in a living body will keep on going indefinitely, as long as ridding the body of acid wastes properly detoxifies tissue fluids. A metabolism-tailored diet detoxifies the body by lowering its acid waste levels, and should therefore lower disease susceptibility while increasing longevity, she concludes.

The positive effects of alkalising the body (usually via supplements or diet) have been described by numerous researchers. Such reported effects have included enhancing exercise performance (1), slowing progression of chronic kidney disease (2) and lowering risk of developing gout, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (3). In contrast with these researchers, however, Kliment maintains that an alkaline diet is not necessary for everyone. Fast metabolisers, for example, should eat plenty of meat, which is an acid-forming food, but limit intake of fruit and vegetables. Slow metabolisers should do the opposite, limiting meat intake and eating plenty of alkali-forming fruit and green leafy vegetables. According to the scheme the author proposes, balanced metabolisers may safely eat most foods. The book contains dedicated chapters detailing causes of a range of diseases, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, mental and neurological disorders, kidney disease, arthritic conditions, diabetes, alcoholism and eye disease. Claiming that almost all of these conditions are curable by taking steps to lower acid levels, the author also provides dietary protocols – including distinct supplement combinations – for the different diseases.

I found it hard to make the connection between alkalisation and metabolic typing as described in this book. While scientific evidence for the benefits of alkali-forming foods continues to accumulate, I could find no peer-reviewed scientific publication on the concept of metabolic typing or for the claimed benefits of eating according to metabolic type, although a lively debate can be followed here: http://bit.ly/oCxf9c. I found a number of questionnaire-based tests on nutritionists’ web-sites, completing two of which gave me different results for my metabolic type. The book also describes two tests (which I gave a miss) for determining metabolic type, based on swallowing niacin (vitamin B-3) or large amounts of vitamin C. The book had few references, making it difficult to check the author’s claims. Finally, it was not the most scintillating of reads. Therefore, while the concept of alkali benefits it presents is interesting and worth following up, the metabolic type aspect is so little-documented that I would be cautious about blindly following all of this book’s dietary recommendations.

Lifestyle Factors That Can Cause Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes is a lifestyle disease and several lifestyle factors are known to cause Type II diabetes. In addition heredity also plays a major role in Type II diabetes. Each of these factors is detailed below:

Genetics

If close relatives have Type II diabetes then the chances of developing the disease increases drastically when compared to the general population. Studies have been conducted on various genes that are thought to cause the disease, but results have varied across ethnic groups. Genes that influence fat metabolism are thought to play a major role in Type II diabetes. The role of genetics in Type II diabetes is much higher than that for Type II diabetes.

Ethnicity

It is found that Asians, Africans and Hispanics are more prone to Type II diabetes thus pointing to a possible link between ethnicity and diabetes.

Stress

Although stress may not directly cause diabetes, it can cause diabetes symptoms to appear in a pre-diabetic person. It can also aggravate the disease in someone who already suffers from diabetes. The adrenaline hormone released in a typical stressful situation is known to impair the function of insulin thus resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. Even physical stress caused by an illness or severe pain such as after a surgery can cause the typical stress response and cause an increase blood sugar.

Physical Inactivity

A sedentary lifestyle is known to cause diabetes. This combined with obesity is one of the major risk factors of diabetes. In fact studies have shown that people with diabetes typically eat much more, are fatter and have a less active lifestyle than their own siblings.

Obesity

A body mass index higher than 30 is a sure sign of impending diabetes. The heavier the body, the higher is the energy requirements of the cells. The pancreas keeps producing additional insulin till one day it just tires out and stops working. This will lead to an increase in blood sugar levels as the cells are no longer able to convert that into energy. Childhood obesity is also known to cause diabetes at a later stage in life.

Smoking

Frequent smoking is another cause of Type II diabetes. Smoking is found to increase fasting glucose levels and some studies have shown that smokers have almost a 50% increased chance of developing diabetes than non smokers. In addition smoking can also aggravate the symptoms in a diabetic patient as it increases the chances of high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure which are harmful to a diabetic patient.

Diet

A fat and carbohydrate rich diet can cause diabetes and increase the risk factors in patients already suffering from the disease.

Alcohol

A high dose of alcohol can also be a cause of Type II diabetes. Heavy alcohol use can lead to lever diseases which in turn can cause obesity and thus lead to Type II diabetes.

Age

Type II diabetes usually manifests itself after the age of 45, although it can be seen rarely in younger people too. Age is a major risk factor of Type II diabetes and affects more than 10% of world population above the age of 65.

In Utero Malnutrition

Although not proven, some studies point to a possible relationship between malnutrition while being in the mother’s womb and development of Type II diabetes later in life. It is suspected that in utero malnutrition may interfere with beta cell development in the pancreas.

In addition to these factors, other conditions such as use of certain medicines can trigger diabetic like symptoms known as secondary diabetes. Gestational diabetes is caused when a person is pregnant and is found to disappear once the baby is born. However, people who suffer from gestational diabetes are more prone to develop Type II diabetes at a later stage. During pregnancy insulin sensitivity is lowered because of the action of placental hormones. Repeated pregnancies may increase the chances of developing diabetes especially in overweight and obese women.

Advances in molecular genetics have helped to identify some specific and clinically recognizable forms of diabetes. However these subtypes of diabetes such as maturity onset diabetes of the young more commonly known as MODY are less common and contribute to just 5% of cases.

It is important to note that diabetes is not a contagious disease. Thus a person suffering from diabetes cannot pass it on to people who come into contact with them. It is a lifestyle disease without any cure; however with careful management one can control the symptoms of the disease and lead a healthy life.

Childhood Obesity Is Now a Global Problem

Childhood obesity is now a global problem, and is no longer an issue that affects just the USA but also the whole planet. There is no country that does not face the severe menace of childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is likely to cost us our future if we bury our heads in the sand. Obesity is a state of being critically overweight to such a degree that it affects the child’s health. The first difficulties in childhood obesity are emotional and psychological. These lead to sadness, loneliness and nervousness, and these children are more likely to engage in higher risk behaviours such as smoking and alcohol consumption, which makes the problem much worse.

This childhood obesity also leads to life-threatening conditions such as heart disease,

high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnoea, liver disease, early puberty, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, asthma and shins infections, and worst of all, cancer. Obese children grow up to be obese adults. Also of concern is the mortality rate, which is on the rise for childhood obesity and adolescent obesity.

Obese children suffer terribly from teasing, harassment, and discrimination, which leads to very low self-esteem and depression. Children who are obese have carotid arteries which have prematurely aged 30 years, as well as abnormal levels of cholesterol.

Eating in high street fast food outlets such as McDonald’s is one of the main causes of obesity in childhood. The fast food industries are totally at fault here, but so are parents. They allow their children to make the choices for eating when parents and family should be sitting down to a family meal with no TV, music or radios blasting in the background. Try to remember this; the fast food industries spend $50 billion each year on advertising AIMED AT CHILDREN. See how many websites these fast food chains have and then remember that 100 million children view these websites each month. Also, look at McDonald’s and other fast food chains. They give out toys. Who for? CHILDREN.

Now consider calorie-rich drinks. It is a fact that the consumption by children of sugar-laden soft drinks is a factor in childhood obesity. It is my understanding that in all the fast food chains, there are about 3000 types of drink and only.05% has any nutritional value. It is very difficult to refuse when your children ask you to take them to McDonald’s or another fast food chain, but it should only be a treat once in a blue moon. Generally, you should not allow them to go anywhere near one of these fast food outlets. Children these days are hit by 40,000 McDonald’s adverts per year on average. It is very difficult to imagine that a company such as McDonald’s cares anything about your child’s health. They just want your money and screw you and your children’s health.

It is also worth noting that there is usually a rise in obesity when there are fast food outlets next to a school. Children from these schools are more overweight and obese than those from schools that are nowhere near these fast food outlets and that run exercise classes.

A major problem in addition to the fast food chains is the physical inactivity of children. The majority of children do not take part in sport or physical exercise. No wonder countries are not producing world class players in their national teams and are struggling to attract the very young to take up sports and physical exercise. The children are now inactive due to spending far too many hours doing stationary activities such as using computers, playing video games and watching TV. It has now been proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that reducing the hours children are allowed to watch TV, use their computers or play video games also reduces their calorie intake.

When childhood obesity is rampant in a particular school it is because the teachers are not motivating the children to become active and play ball games or take exercise such as biking or running. There should be a class of teaching solely aimed at educating children on the dangers of obesity, alcohol consumption, drugs and smoking. At home, the food choices for eating are the responsibility of the parents and not the children. Certainly let them speak, but do explain to them the risks and hazards of eating particular meals and not taking any exercise to help burn off the calories.

To stay sound, performance horses must have regular shoeing at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks.
