Lupus Treatment – The Natural Way

Lupus treatment usually involves medications whereby you will be given by your physician various kinds of them. The medicines that will be given are Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs, corticosteroids, anti-malarial and immunosuppressant drugs. Pain relief is the action of NSAIDS, as most people afflicted with lupus have this common problem. Anti-malarial were also proven to be effective lupus treatment, since these can modulate the functioning of the immune system thereby reducing signs and symptoms that are associated with such activity. Meanwhile, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants are given so that immune system will stop creating antibodies that attack your own body tissues.

While medications are being advised for lupus treatment, these have some drawbacks that are not quite desirable. First of all, these do not guarantee that you will entirely be free of lupus. That is for the reason that no cure has been established yet for this disease, as what was mentioned above. Moreover, these medications have several adverse effects that are unwarranted. For every drug, prolonged use will lead to some undesirable effects on the body such as kidney problems, immune system alterations, and a lot more. But are you willing to take those risks while in fact, there is something natural that you can do for lupus treatment?

Lupus treatment does not focus mainly on medical therapies, for there are other things that you can do so that you can get better. Along with the medications that you are taking in, you should seriously consider lifestyle changes so that the drugs can be fully effective. Begin with eating a healthy and balanced diet, and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. There might also be some restrictions for you especially if you have some already existing medical conditions like hypertension and diabetes where the former requires you to limit fat and salt intake while the latter will require sugar and carbohydrate control. It might be tiring to hear by exercise and rest are two of the most important factors so that you can get well. Have a balance of both so that you can still function at your optimum level.

Diabetes and Pregnant Women

There are two important issues regarding diabetes and pregnancy. The first concerns the diabetic who wants to conceive and carry a healthy baby to full term and delivery (pre-existing diabetes). And the second issue involves the development of gestational diabetes in a woman who previously showed no sign of the disease.

For the first issue: It is important that any woman with pre-existing diabetes, who either wants to conceive or finds herself pregnant, strictly control her glucose levels, this is particularly important in the early months of pregnancy. The risks of serious birth defects are increased by poor control of pre-existing diabetes, and it is also suggested to be a major cause of miscarriage.

Those women who develop gestational diabetes usually have no increased risk for birth defects although it is important that glucose levels be carefully monitored and controlled to reduce the risk of stillbirth.

All female diabetics who are pregnant tend to deliver much larger babies than the average. It is known that the babies grow larger because some of the additional sugar from the mother passes through the umbilical cord into the blood stream of the baby. Insulin then converts this sugar into fat cells. In many cases, these large babies have to be delivered by caesarian section as they are too large for a vaginal delivery.

Provided diabetes is properly controlled there is no reason why diabetic women should not enjoy uncomplicated pregnancies and deliver healthy babies. It is when the diabetes is not controlled that complication can happen. Unfortunately, these complications can lead to miscarriage, high blood pressure, premature delivery, and stillbirth.

Pregnant women who have pre-existing diabetes are given a blood test to measure the level of glycosylated haemoglobin before conception. This blood test provides an accurate measure of how well glucose levels have been controlled in the preceding months, and it can indicate the safest time to conceive. This test can also be used throughout the pregnancy to measure how well the diabetes is being controlled.

The current recommendation is for all women to take folic acid before conceiving to avoid the baby developing with neural tube defects. This advice is particularly important for diabetic women as diabetes can increase the risk of this type of birth defect.

Currently, oral medications used to control type 2 diabetes are not approved for use during pregnancy. For this reason, women who are using these drugs will need to switch to insulin before conceiving and during pregnancy.

Most pregnant women are tested for gestational diabetes at some stage between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. Those who develop this gestational diabetes normally discover that blood glucose levels return to normal after the birth of the baby.

Moderate exercise is believed to help cells make better use of available insulin and is recommended during pregnancy.

Blood sugar levels must be monitored carefully during pregnancy as insulin requirements can vary significantly from those required before conception. Urine can also be checked for ketones as the presence of these can be an indication that the diabetes is not being adequately controlled.

For both the safety of the mother and the baby, it is important that all precautions be taken when diabetes is found in the mother. Failure to do so can lead to devastating problems.

Obesity in America

Obesity has been identified as a pandemic in the US for more than two decades and yet the numbers of obese and overweight grown-ups and kids keep growing. In my opinion, this illness burdens the medical care system, strains commercial resources, and has wide-ranging social results. This article will give you a quick outline of the present situation, its causes, and its results on obesity.

The rates for both in America are 61% in adults and 14% in youngsters. In the same population, obesity rates virtually doubled from 15% in 1980 to 27% in 1999. The share of overweight youngsters and teenagers has increased more than 200 percent as far back as the early 1970s. Obesity preys on genders, all ages, and all racial and ethnicity.

Furthermore, obesity causes economic impacts that hinder all of us. The overall cost of overweight and obesity in 2000 by some conjecture was $117 billion, with $61 billion direct and $56 billion indirect costs. Direct meaning the costs refer to preventative, diagnosing, and treatment services related to overweight and obesity. In addition, indirect costs refer to the cost of salary lost by folks unable to work due to sickness or incapacity together with the value of future takings lost by early death. Additional yearly expenses associated with obesity are 40,000,000 workdays of productivity lost, 63 million doctors’ office visits made, 239 million proscribed activity days and ninety million bed-bound days. The majority of the expenses related to obesity are due to type two diabetes, coronary heart problems, and hypertension.

In addition, obesity as a result is connected with one or two serious medical problems including type two diabetes mellitus, coronary disease, raised blood pressure, and stroke. Both modest and huge weight gains are connected with seriously increased chance of illness. As an example, a weight gain of 100 pounds increases a person’s chance of developing type two diabetes to twice that of people who’ve not added weight, while people who gain 44 pounds or more have 4 times the chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Obesity is also linked to increased rates of particular sorts of cancer.

Obesity is an independent risk factor for coronary disease, hypoxia, sleep apnea, hernia, and rheumatoid arthritis. Morbidity from obesity might be as great as from misery, smoking, or problem drinking. It is said that obesity is the 7th prime cause of death in the USA. There is roughly three hundred thousand deaths accredited to obesity every year, close to the four hundred thousand deaths attributed to tobacco products.

With this in mind, social results including discrimination, emotional suffering might be among the most agonizing facets of weight. American society stresses look and regularly equates charm with thinness, particularly for girls. These implications may be catastrophic to large folks. In my opinion, many think that fat people are gluttonous, lazy, or both, although this isn’t right. As a consequence, fat folks regularly face bias or discrimination in the employment marketplace, in class, and in social circumstances. Feelings of refusal, shame, or depression are common. Leaving many of them feeling like life is not worth the effort.

In conclusion, this paper provided a quick outline of the present situation, its causes, and its results on obesity. It is an illness that the nation needs to acknowledge and take into account. We can’t pretend to ignore the problem but try to solve the problem for our future generation. It needs to start with us first.

Effects of Lyme Disease Rash

Borrelia burdorferi is the bacteria carried by ticks from mice and deer which are then transmitted to the victim through bites which cause rashes. Lyme disease is not only possible for humans but to domestic pets as well commonly the dogs and the cats. Common habitats for ticks are shrubs and grass. They will attach to the host animal when it passes. They are very tiny that it you can’t almost see it with your naked eye.

The coastal areas in the pacific have the most cases of this disease throughout United States. Other areas include the upper Midwest and Northeast. Deer ticks are very common in these places though this disease is also present all over the country. However, there are reported cases of people experiencing this disease in other regions like Europe, Asia and Canada.

The skin is affected since Lyme disease rash is one of the signs of the disease but it can also affect joins, the nervous system as well as the different organs of the body. The severity varies from one person to another. There are three stages but it can also change among affected people. There are different reactions caused by this disease. The very first symptom is usually Lyme disease rash. Its characteristics are circular with a clear center spot with a red margin. It is warm to touch and commonly not itchy nor painful. For people with dark skin pigments, the rash will also appear darker mimicking the appearance of a bruise. The rash normally disappears in a month.

There are instances when affected people does not have Lyme disease rash and for cases like this, the disease will progress to the second stage. Some have rash but will also experience fatigue, fever, headache and painful muscle which is collectively mistaken for flu.

If ignored, it may disappear through time but it is possible that the infection may spread to the rest of the body. It will take three weeks from the day the person got the tick bite with rashes or none. There are cases where the classic characteristics of Lyme disease rash will not show. It does not matter if you got the rash or not. What is important is that you have to see your doctor if you feel that you have flu for days just to be sure that it is not Lyme disease because in the event that you have it, you can be treated immediately.

Causes Of Sore Itchy Scalp

There can be many causes of sore itchy scalp problems. In rare cases it can be put down to a lack of hygiene, though that is generally not the case for most people and it can in fact more likely be attributed to excessive washing or the use of harsh shampoos and conditioners that cause the scalp to dry out and leave the follicles open to infection (folliculitis). Many of today’s shampoos and conditioners contain a number of toxic chemicals which dry out the skin, stripping it of its natural oils and thereby causing a sore, itchy scalp. Without these essential oils the skin is open to a number of infections and yeast organisms like Melassezia Globbosa (the fungus which causes dandruff) or Pitysporum Ovale – which result in dandruff and flaking of the scalp. An example of one of these toxic chemicals is Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS) which is an aggressive cleaning and foaming agent commonly used as an engine degreaser. Although proven to strip oils from and prematurely age your skin, damage eye membranes, retard healing, inhibit hair follicle growth and more, it is added to 90% of shampoos on the market. Silicon is also often added to conditioners as an artificial shine enhancer.

Some other possible causes are:

  • A skin condition, such as acne, which can occur for a number of reasons – often hormonal, but also via infection, ingrown hairs and blocked pores, or incorrect diet.
  • A fungus like Ringworm (tinea capitis). This is a superficial fungal infection of the scalp and is caused by mould-like fungi called dermatophytes. It is more common in children and the symptoms include red, itchy patches on the scalp, which cause hair loss and leave bald areas. The skin might itch and be red and peel or be scaly, have swollen blisters or a rash (that can spread) and looks like black dots. The rash is highly contagious, and I would highly recommend seeing your doctor or dermatologist as soon as possible to get further advice and prevent it from spreading further.
  • A cyst, such as an epidermal or sebaceous cyst, a sac beneath the outer layer of the skin that is filled with a greasy white material. These cysts most often appear on the scalp, ears, face or back and are caused by plugged ducts at the site of a hair shaft.
  • An allergic skin reaction (contact dermatitis). This usually comes in two forms – Irritant Contact Dermatitis and Allergic Contact Dermatitis. The former is normally a reaction caused by the direct effect of an irritant substance on the skin, while the latter is a hypersensitivity reaction, acting through the body’s immune system, due to a particular substance or group of related substances. This goes back to what I mentioned above about the harsh irritant chemicals that you find in many of today’s shampoos and hair products.
  • Stress – brought on by exhaustion, work pressures, emotional tension. Stress can also cause acne to develop.
  • Viral infections, such as chickenpox and shingles

(Please note that every case is different and if you have an extreme case of scalp problems or are worried and uncertain about anything I would highly recommend you consult your doctor or dermatologist).

To soothe the itching on your scalp there are a few things you can do. Natural oils such as Lavender, German Chamomile, Eucalyptus, and Avocado Oil are excellent at relieving the itchiness. Simply mix them together and add water (4 parts water to 1 part oil), then apply locally to the affected areas on your scalp for relief. This mixture can also be added to your shampoo or conditioner to give your skin an extra boost (try to use a pH neutral shampoo with natural oils such as Tea Tree – this will stop your scalp from drying out further and will help to prevent any infection).

Neem oil is an excellent dandruff preventative and is also great for relieving psoriasis and eczema. As above, it can be added to your shampoo to soothe and aid your scalp problem.

(As with all oils, consult your doctor first if you are pregnant. It is also recommended you patch test all oils/formulas before application or addition to your shampoos).

What is Psoriasis?

What is  psoriasis  and how does a person get this troublesome skin problem? When a person finds himself diagnosed with this problem, the question “what is  psoriasis ?” will certainly pop up. In a nutshell, it is actually a skin condition that a person gets through heredity, and it often results in the emergence of lesions, scabs, scaly skin, dandruff-like flakes and even dry-cracked skin on different parts of the body.

What can be done with  psoriasis  can be easily answered by a doctor. Basically, it is a skin ailment that afflicts around 2% of the American population, and it is incurable. However, it is treatable with different kinds of medication to keep the lesions, flakes and dry skin from becoming too much of a hassle to deal with or simply just too unsightly. Doctors will give patients the appropriate answers to help them understand the disease and its consequences. They will also recommend different kinds of treatments that can help get the scaling and the inflammation down to a minimum.

The treatments that can be given to patients include topical creams and ointments, as well as oral medications like pills, tablets and light treatments that may include substances with sunblock properties. These different kinds of treatments are all dependent on the kind of  psoriasis  a person has and the severity of the problem. While these may be effective in one way or another, not every person diagnosed with a certain type of  psoriasis  will get the kind of treatment that can work well with his problems.

The question of “what is  psoriasis ?” can also be answered if you try to find out the different types that a lot of people are currently experiencing. One of the most common types is scalp  psoriasis . This kind can even be easily mistaken as an extreme case of dandruff, although it is one variant of the skin problem called  psoriasis . However, this is treatable with the same kind of medication that dandruff sufferers use, including shampoos with ketoconazole or selenium sulfide as the active ingredients for getting rid of the flakes that are generated by this illness. Another type that is rarer and may occur after a bout with strep throat is guttate  psoriasis . This kind usually afflicts a person before he or she is thirty years old, and it is represented by reddish lesions that may dot the person’s body. These and a few more variations of the disease can certainly give you a better idea of “what is  psoriasis ?”.

Skin Fungus Is Contagious!

Be it Nail  Fungus , Athlete’s Foot, Ringworm (all Tinea) or any other type of Skin  Fungus , it is, indeed contagious. Not only to people who come in contact with your, but also to animals and to other parts of you body!

This is why so many people, after contracting (they “caught” it too) toe nail  fungus , so often also develop fingernail  fungus . The  fungus  is happy to live pretty much anywhere on your body, but it greatly favors the nails, feet, and groin areas. But all this is not too make you feel like you need to be paranoid about  fungus , but to help you understand how to combat it! While it can be cured with everyday household items (see link below) it is also important to know what to do while it is here. As you read this article, you will discover effective ways to manage and isolate your fungal infections.

– Cover it!

Depending on the location of the infestation, you may cover your  fungi  by default. But, regardless, one of the single most important thing you can do to contain it is to wear something over it. Obviously, if located on the feet or groin areas, shoes and pant/shorts are covering it. Wearing gloves or a long-sleeve shirt can help for upper locations as well.

Be careful however, that you are not “smothering” it. Certain articles of clothing are more prone to cause sweating (leather, latex, thick nylon, etc.) which will actually harm your condition.  Fungi  absolutely love dark, warm, moist locations… so don’t give it to them! Instead, wear cotton or other breathy material to reduce sweating and keep you cool. For shoes, consider wearing open-toe sandals with cotton socks to provide ventilation, but not exposure. And if you have some stinky shoes, get rid of them. They stink because they are infested with  fungus .

Lastly, make sure to launder everything after it’s first wear. You don’t want  fungus  spreading through yesterday’s clothes!

– Clean it!

If you don’t shower every night, start now. You don’t necessarily have to do thorough cleaning each night (though I choose to now), but you should make sure to scrub warm, soapy, water all around your infected areas to reduce the grime on your skin that the  fungi  would like to feed on. Make SURE to dry thoroughly, since moisture is what  fungi  love. Baby powder may be a good idea too.

– Chill it!

Keep your house or room at less than 75 degrees at all times… preferably 72 degrees or less. Cool environments will actually cause the Skin  Fungus  to begin to die. Some light cases of  fungi  can actually be cured this way. Wear socks when indoors if your feet are infected to keep them cool and dry.

Allergy Asthma, What Can You Do?

30% to 35% of all North Americans have allergy asthma. These numbers have increased significantly in the past 20 years. As a result both the sufferer and the sufferers’ family have seen a reduction in both quality of life and productivity. The impact can be devastating and even life threatening.

The allergy asthma population is on the rise yet research is on the decline. That doesn’t make a lot of sense. If you suffer from allergy asthma depending on the level of severity you can try to make improvements on your own or you may have to seek medical assistance.

There are several natural medicines that have shown excellent results for allergy asthma that is considered mild to moderate. Anyone dealing with severe problems needs to consult their doctor. Sometimes changes in lifestyle such as what you are exposing yourself to can help. Other times boosting the immune system or reprogramming it will make all the difference in the world.

Allergy asthma is one of the fastest growing allergies and asthma is becoming the fastest growing hospital admission in children and it is killing hundreds every year.

Allergies in general are growing with 2-5% of children and 10% of adults developing food allergies with many able to resolve themselves with dietary changes and often the use of herbal supplements. A small percentage will be dealing with more life threatening factors that must be addressed immediately. And many dealing with allergy asthma will need to work with their doctors.

Hay fever now affects about 25% of the population and it often leads to sinusitis and although it is often trivialized it is like allergy asthma seriously impairing a person’s ability to function.

Many of you might not realize the eczema can be a result of an allergy. In fact 10% of all eczema is allergy related and like allergy asthma you may need the help of your doctor to find the best approach to reducing it. There are many excellent herbal and natural products that can work well to eliminate eczema and reduce symptoms.

Anaphylaxis is the most serious allergy asthma – this is a reaction that can kill so suddenly those surrounding don’t realize what is occurring until it is too late. Anaphylaxis affects around 2% of the population and what happens is when the allergy strike the air ways are restricted and the person cannot breath thus suffocating.

Thankfully we are becoming much better at recognizing allergies in both children and adults. That means those suffering from allergies, and allergy asthma are getting better diagnosis and thus better treatment. In some cases with a little bit of diligence you can do a lot to help yourself using natural and herbal products. In more severe cases you will have to work with your doctor for the best outcome.

If you believe you have allergy asthma it is important to diagnose and find out exactly what is going on treating it before it gets more serious or even life threatening. There are some excellent asthma medications on the market that help you breathe and they have very few side effects.

So don’t delay if you think you have allergy asthma. You want to deal with it before it affects your quality of life.

Mean Foods – Negative Mind – Body Reactions

Do you realize that many of the foods you choose on a daily basis are affecting your behavior in a negative fashion? They may lead to feelings of extreme   irritability , fatigue, argumentative inclinations, enhance obsessive compulsive disorder, and severe anxiety reactions. They affect both the mind and body, creating an unstable emotional and physical environment. Many individuals believe these reactions are the result of a “chemical imbalance” and rush to their physicians for antidepressants, anti-anxiety or any other band-aid for these disturbances. There is no need for this course of action…not when you can choose to change your diet, alter your nutrition, in a simple and very effective way. The results are astonishing. You have the power to change the way you feel, the way you react and the way you interact with others, through recognizing the food triggers which interfere with your life, and learning to make more productive choices.

MEAN FOODS

Sugar Sweets create huge mood swings, chronic  irritability , argumentativeness and fatigue. If you are prone to anxiety, depersonalization, OCD, or depression, it enhances these sensations.

Caffeine A cup of coffee, tea or soda will pick you up and just as easily, drop you on your head.  Irritability , maximum anxiety, obsessive behaviors, and that lovely boost in energy goes south before you finish your project…leading to a second cup and more of the same.

Chocolate– Double Trouble…the combination of both SUGAR and CAFFEINE. Instant lift and gratification turns sour when one crashes in a short 30 minutes.  Irritability , fatigue, tension and four moods replace the initial “high,” as blood sugar levels peak and then take a steep downward turn.

Solo Carbohydrates– Carbs need a good lean protein to maintain a slow burn and balanced blood sugar levels. This is why a plate of pasta, bread, or any other carb alone will not satiate for long. Prime example: Pancakes and Syrup for breakfast. Delicious going down, followed by cranky, unproductive morning, filled with anxiety, and fatigue. I call this being wired and tired at the same time.

No one needs these “carb crashes” when blood sugar goes from “balanced and stable” into “spiking and plummeting.”

Alcohol– Refrain from drinking alcohol if you do not want to experience abrupt mood swings. Anxiety, depression and  irritability  will often result after the initial “high.” Is it worth it? Alcohol is highest on the carbohydrate chart. When ingested alone, it will boost your blood sugar level and you will feel great for a very short period of time…followed by a large crash, resulting in depression, anxiety, enhanced OCD behavior, and an overall lack of cheer. It will easily put you to sleep and just as easily jolt you from those sweet dreams. Alcohol, in particular, will enhance feelings of depersonalization, so do not be fooled by those initial feelings of calm.

Do not believe you are “Stuck” in this Merry-Go-Round of Emotion – You have a CHOICE

You have the POWER TO:

– Change Your Mood

– Create More Energy

– Think Clearly

– Become Healthy

– Naturally Select Foods that WORK FOR YOU RATHER THAN AGAINST YOU

You don’t have to eliminate all sugars or carbohydrates from your diet.

You DO have to learn how to use the correctly…and FEEL LIKE YOUR OLD SELF AGAIN.

COUNTER MEAN FOODS:

– Choose good lean proteins (meats, poultry, fish and low-fat dairy) and eat them at the appropriate time of day to balance blood sugar levels and create amino acids, the forerunners of Serotonin, the “feel good” chemical produced in the brain.

– Select the GOOD CARBOHYDRATES such as vegetables, fruits and whole grain breads (not simple sugars such as candy, cakes and sodas) and eat them at the appropriate time of day to release SEROTONIN in the brain.

– Hydrate: Drink plenty of fresh pure water. This eliminates anxiety and keeps the mind/body running smoothly.

– Use your foods properly to combat insomnia, OCD, anxiety and depersonalization.

– Create a mind/body that is less reactive to all stresses through selection of these foods that neutralize reactions.

– Prevent further flair-ups by eating correctly in order to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, preventing future episodes of “carb crashes”

– Our Anxiety Neutralizing Diet included in the Anxiety Busters Program, with its 7 Day Menu Plan will guide you into a healthy, less reactive mind and body. You will learn how to use the foods you already have in your kitchen and create a LESS REACTIVE MIND AND BODY.

The Seriousness of Depression

Just about everywhere I went out on the Internet, I found these two words together and were almost companions…”depression and suicide!”

The stigma associated with mental illness in this country has to come to a halt! The discrimination; the name-calling…”nut-cake” and “crackpot” has to stop! The fear of getting fired from a job in this country, because the employee seeks mental health-care is a shame!

Stigma: (definition); shame or social disgrace

“We choose our sorrows and joys long before we experience them.” Kahil Gibron

From: Depression.com;

Depression is a serious medical condition which can lead to the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior. Although most people who are depressed do not kill themselves, untreated depression can increase the risk of possible suicide. Whether or not they intend to act on these thoughts. Severely depressed people often do not have the energy to harm themselves, but it is when depression lifts, and they can gain increased energy, that they may be more likely to attempt suicide!

* * *

I saw a story on the news recently, where a young man about 21 years old, and who is in college, was having problems with himself, and suicidal thoughts kept coming into his mind. He was scared, as anyone would be, so he went to get help at a local medical healthcare center. When the university officials learned about this, they expelled him from the university! This action by the university officials is a disgrace! We cannot have another Virginia Tech in this country…and young people have to get the help they need and when they need it, etc.

From: Psychology Information Online.com;

Impact of depression causes tremendous emotional pain; disrupts lives of millions of people; adversely affects the lives of families and friends; reduces work production and absenteeism; has a negative impact on the economy..costing as estimated 44 billion dollars per year!

“Depression is the inability to construct a future.” Rollo May

I have a brother named Ricky, who is an alcoholic and was spending time at the University of New Mexico Mental Health Center getting care, etc. One day, my mother and I went to visit Ricky, and as we sat in the lobby waiting to see him…we heard a lot of commotion outside. There were about six people in the group entering the Mental Health Center, including three policemen, who were pushing and shoving, and trying to bring in an elderly couple who were both about 70 years old!

Screaming and yelling and crying…the elderly couple were not easy to handle by the police, and they took the elderly couple to the back of the building someplace! My mother and I looked at each other in amazement! Why were the police bringing this elderly couple to the Mental Health Center? When the nurse came by to take us back to see Ricky, I asked her what had happened to the elderly couple.

The nurse told me, that the house of the elderly couple burned to the ground…and if that wasn’t enough…their two grandchildren perished in the fire! Could there be a catastrophe greater than this? We can all relate to this horror, because we all live in a house or apartment or mobile home, and it can happen to any of us, and in minutes, our lives would be changed for the worse! One can only imagine how the elderly couple sank into depression…and they could have been of harm to themselves or to others, and that’s why the police brought them in and to get medication!

From: American Psychological Association;

Some people with depression try to harm themselves in the mistaken belief that how they are feeling will never change. Depression is a major cause of disability in the United States and world-wide.

“Depression is nourished by a lifetime of ungrieved and unforgiving hurts.” Penelope Sweet.

But, depression is not just for the risk of suicide. It is for other risk factors and illnesses as well. For example:

From: Depression Resource Center.org;

Research over the past decade has shown that depression and heart disease are common companions, and what is worse…one can lead to the other! It appears now that depression is an important risk factor for heart disease along with high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

* * *

During the past decade or so, I’ve been laid off from six jobs, for legitimate reasons such as companies closing; defense cuts; down-sizing, etc. I have never lost a job because I was fired or for an attitude or poor attendance. etc. But, during this awful time in my life, I probably suffered from depression and didn’t know it! After I educated myself, I could now take the necessary medications to help me cope!

“When your neighbor loses his job…it’s a recession…but when you lose YOUR job…it’s a depression! Harry Truman

In raising awareness, American’s have to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness, and everyone has to do their part! Parents have to teach their kids not to poke fun…or tease anyone for any reason…as others may be having trouble coping as well, etc. If the Golden Rule was ever applicable…it applies here…do unto others as you would have them do unto you!

Inherited Phobias

Psychologists classify phobias such as stress disorders manifested through exaggerated episodes of anxiety experienced by individuals who cannot overcome a fear produced by external stimuli although no threats could be associated with those stimuli. The causes, which might generate phobias, are extremely diversified mainly because phobias are either inherited or developed by the sufferers’ psyche. Another category consists of rewarded phobias that could be placed between hereditary and built up disorders. Rewarded phobias develop because the sufferer avoided repeatedly threatening situations and every time he succeeds in avoiding the menace, his phobia is simultaneously rewarded and increased.

Inherited phobias are characterized by the fact that the patient borrows a particular behavior as he witnessed phobic episodes of another person, usually an important relative or friend, and came to perceive the same cause as a real threat. Hereditary phobias are somehow induced. For instance, parents who suffer from a social phobia, inoculate their kids the idea that they must adopt a self-defensive behavior when they are socially exposed. Moreover, experts state the fact that genes might have a major contribution to such behaviors and witnessing regularly such phobic episodes could make those genes active.

Statistics show that almost 40% of phobias are inherited while the rest of 60% are caused by stress and traumas. Many of these traumatic episodes have occurred in childhood and have left severe traces on adults’ psyche who acts irrationally each time he lives a similar experiences.

Overall, inherited phobias are not mimetically developed disorders, on the contrary, an empathic behavior could simply explain such “borrowed overreactions”.

Two Proven Herbal Supplements for Stress and Anxiety

The fast-paced nature of modern life is characterized by constant demands and personal challenges. As we try to earn a living or take care of a family, the resulting stress can often feel insurmountable. While many can hide their feelings from family and co-workers, this stress is often characterized by an ongoing sense of  anxiety  and inability to sleep. Then, as we get tired or more anxious, our ability to cope diminishes.

Most of us don’t realize there is a problem until relationships begin to suffer or performance at work slips. At this point, many turn to either alcohol or prescription drugs as a way to escape from the stress. Alternatives to dealing with this stress and  anxiety  in a productive way are often difficult to consider in the midst of such crisis. Unfortunately, self-medicating often makes the problem worse and may become addictive.

Fortunately, there are a variety of natural methods for addressing the ongoing challenges of life. The first step essential to reducing stress and  anxiety  is to take a hard look at what is causing the angst. The issue might be around life at work, or maybe a personal relationship is suffering. Once you’ve identified the root cause, then take a hard look at which obligations are really essential versus those that you may perceive to be important. Perhaps your social schedule is too intense or too much time is spent at the office. Even after you’ve completed a fair life evaluation, it is often tough to implement the changes you know are necessary. This is where herbal supplements for stress and  anxiety  can play a role.

Natural herbal supplements can help you relax or deal with social  anxiety  without the harsh and unwanted side effects associated with alcohol or drugs. In general, they can enhance your ability to relax or get the sleep essential to making real change. However, few know where to start or which supplements actually work. Our brains produce a variety of hormones and chemicals in order to regulate essential functions such as sleep and relaxation. This brings us to the role of 5-HTP and Melatonin – two essential herbal supplements for stress and  anxiety .

5-HTP

While the processes are complex, 5-HTP or 5-hydroxytryptophan is an amino acid required for the production of serotonin. Studies have shown that low levels of serotonin can lead to depression, insomnia, irritability and  anxiety . Therefore, supplementing with 5-HTP can help alleviate these symptoms and is particularly useful as a holistic treatment for stress. If you are debating the effectiveness of herbal supplements vs. prescription drugs, consider that 5HTP works in a manner similar to SSRI’s. (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) Common prescription SSRI’s and anti  anxiety  disorder medications include drugs like Zoloft and Prozac. In fact, one study demonstrated that 5-HTP was as effective in treating  anxiety  and depression as the SSRI Fluvoxamine. As an added bonus, 5HTP has been shown to help reduce the pain associated with fibromyalgia and migraine headaches. Finally, given its ability to help produce serotonin, which make the body feel full and content, 5-HTP is often used as a weight loss supplement. Also, 5-HTP is a precursor, or is involved in the natural production of melatonin.

Melatonin

Melatonin, a hormone produced in the brain, is an important part of the cycle of sleeping and waking up. In this role, Melatonin produces the feeling of sleepiness that sets upon us when night falls. The reason that we normally fall asleep is due to the timing of our circadian rhythms, or biological processes that regulate bodily function. Early in the evening, the pineal gland begins to secrete melatonin with its peak production hitting half way through the night. Then, it begins to taper off towards morning. Taking melatonin as a supplement before bedtime accelerates natural production so that this peak is reached earlier. This helps those with insomnia fall asleep and stay asleep. In several properly documented studies, melatonin was given to test subjects as an alternative to a class of sedatives called benzodiazepines. Common prescription drug brands in this group are Xanax, Tafil, Ativan, and Valium – many of which can become addictive. In several cases, the participants using melatonin were able to stop taking the drugs while still maintaining healthy sleep habits. This makes a powerful case for herbal supplements vs. prescription drugs. These same studies discovered that those with a history of seizures experienced more frequent incidents when taking melatonin. As such, those who have ever had seizures should not take this supplement. Also, melatonin is best used when a full night’s rest can be enjoyed. Those who cannot enjoy a full night’s sleep should not take this supplement because it is so effective and will cause drowsiness.

Remember that melatonin and 5-HTP should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet, exercise and with the knowledge of your doctor. In addition, you should not mix supplements with each other or prescription drugs. Even thought the supplements we’ve discussed are natural alternatives to medication for  anxiety  disorders, they are very effective and should be taken in the proper dosages.
