Almost 20 percent of patients after cholecystectomy can suffer from sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. Spasms of this valve cause high pressure in the bile duct resulting in pain and enlargement of bile ducts.

In a healthy person, bile travels from the liver into the gallbladder. In the gallbladder, bile is concentrated for digesting fats. Bile consists of water, bicarbonate, minerals, soluble bile acids, bile pigments, cholesterol, and lecithin. An individual coral is a very tiny animal just a few millimeters in diameter. You said millimeters. Sorry, 1 millimeter is equal to 0.0393700787 inches. That’s math. Stop, I’m getting sleepy, again. Ok. He’s really small. Picture a very small sea anenome. A what? A sea anenome is that wavy tentacle thingy that Nemo lives in.

As our little coral friend grows, he creates a skeleton cup around himself by secreting limestone. Secreting? He builds himself a house, without a roof and he lives inside it for protection. The name “hard coral” comes from the protective “house” that our friend creates for himself, not from the texture of the his body which is soft.

So our little friend stays in his cup “house” and when he gets hungry he sticks his wavy tentacles outside of the “house” and catches particles such as plankton or maybe really small fish. He does this using the stinging cells he has on his tentacles. Because our friend is more of a homebody and isn’t much on travelling, he likes to build his “house” where there is a steady current passing by so the food will be brought to him.

In other words, we cannot calculate the value of the function when the value of x is equal to 2, yet we can still talk about what happens to the value of the function when x gets very close to the value of 2.

The idea discussed above is what gives us the concept of derivative, which is nothing more than a special limit. From the concept of derivative, all kinds of applications emerge: we can find the maximum and minimum values of functions and find rates at which one quantity is changing with respect to another at some instantaneous point. It is the derivative which permits us to find the dimensions of a rectangle if we wish to have as large an area as possible and it is the derivative that tells us the maximum height that a ball will reach when thrown according to a specific law.

A child with gastro-enteritis usually cannot keep much fluid down for the first 12 hours or so, but parents should keep offering frequent small sips of flat ginger ale or diluted apple juice (a tbsp. every 15 min to start) and than gradually increase the amount as tolerated.
