Alternative Medicine, Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers Relief

The open sores which appear in the mouth are called as mouth  ulcers . They are white or yellow in color, and are generally accompanied with a sharp pain, which is felt most when the person is eating. The pain is quite acute when salty or spicy food passes over the  ulcer . Mouth  ulcers  can occur anywhere in the mouth – on the inner surface of the cheeks, lips, tongue, palate and at the base of the gums.

Mouth  ulcers  are caused due to vitiation of the pitta dosha. The condition is called as Mukha Paaka in Sanskrit. There are several factors that can cause it. Some of them are as follows:-

1 Wrong diet

2 Digestive problems such as constipation

3 Hormonal imbalances, especially during puberty in girls

4 Anemia

5 Constant stress

6 Hereditary factors

7 Infection of the herpes simplex virus

8 Irritation by some chemicals, tobacco and alcohol

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Mouth  Ulcers

1. Banyan (Ficus religiosa)

A decoction of the bark of the banyan tree reduces the pain caused by mouth  ulcers .

2. Chebulic Myrobalan (Terminalia chebula)

The chebulic myrobalan is a component of the Triphala choorna, of which the amalaki is also an essential component. Its bark helps in reducing the pain of the  ulcers . It also helps in correcting the constipation problems which causes  ulcers .

3. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum)

Fenugreek leaves help in the treatment of mouth  ulcers . An infusion of these leaves is used for gargling. Fenugreek is a strong agent on the  ulcers . Hence it is used as a remedy for recurrent  ulcers .

4. Henna (Lawsonium alba)

Henna is a cooling herb. It can provide a soothing effect on the  ulcers . It is used with water for gargling.

5. Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis)

The Indian gooseberry or amalaki has a dual effect on  ulcers . Used as a gargling solution, it can relax the pain of the  ulcers . Secondly it can deal with constipation, which is generally one of the important factors causing  ulcers  in the mouth.

6. Kattha (Acacia catechu)

Kattha is an extract of the Acacia catechu plant, known commonly in the west as the catechu plant. This has astringent properties. It has a special place in Ayurvedic medicine in oral treatment. It is used in many forms for the treatment of  ulcers .

7. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Licorice is used for several oral and dental problems. It is a component of several toothpaste brands. Its stem and leaves cleanse the mouth effectively. Apart from controlling the sores, it can refresh the mouth and cleanse the teeth.

8. Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

Turmeric is also a cooling agent. It helps in relieving mouth  ulcers . It is mixed in water and the suspension is used for gargling.

(2) Dietary Treatments for Mouth  Ulcers

Digestive problems are the leading causes for mouth  ulcers . If an oral  ulcer  occurs suddenly, then it could be due to excessive heat generated in the body due to consuming hot food.

1. When  ulcers  occur in the mouth, hot and spicy food must be stopped immediately. These will aggravate the pains of the  ulcers . Caffeine and tea must also be stopped.

2. Consuming more greens in the diet helps to be ever-protected from  ulcers . Greens also provide the necessary fiber for the movement of bowels. This prevents constipation.

3. It is advisable to stop fatty food – especially that which contains oils – till the time the  ulcers  have healed.

4. Papaya is a very good fruit to be consumed when you have mouth  ulcers . It soothes the mouth  ulcers  and helps in their quick recovery. Yam is also beneficial for mouth  ulcer  problems.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Mouth  Ulcers

Ayurveda prescribes the Irimedadi tailam for local application over the mouth  ulcers . It gives relief from the pains and assists in speedy recovery. Instead of Irimedadi tailam, camphor powder can also be applied on the  ulcers .

(4) Home Remedies for Mouth  Ulcers

1. Grind the leaves of the Indian plum (jambula). Exude their paste in water and gargle with this water. It will give immediate relief from the pains of the mouth  ulcers .

2. Gargling with the water of the adulsa (Justicia adhadota) also brings about an immediate relief from the mouth  ulcer  pains.

3. Mix the peel of a lemon with white catechu. Grind them into a very fine paste. Apply this directly on the  ulcer . The  ulcer  will get treated almost immediately.

4. Take two to three leaves of the guava tree and some catechu. Chomp them together. This will cure even the most persistent of  ulcers  within a few days.

5. Mix some catechu in water till it gets a pasty consistency. Apply this paste on the  ulcers .

6. Mix a ripe banana in curds that have been prepared from cow’s milk. Eat this as a dessert.

It will bring about a permanent solution to the oral  ulcer  problems.

Diet After Gallbladder Surgery – What To and Not To Avoid

Your diet after gallbladder surgery must be highly monitored due to the potential adverse effects of a wrong diet to your over-all recovery. Diet after gallbladder surgery is a vital part of your recovery process. Some patients had to make big changes on their diet plan to cope with the lack of gall bladder and in most cases, it’s the wrong type of diet that causes the removal of this organ in the first place.

During the first few days, it is advisable that you only eat several meals a day instead of eating big meals thrice. It will reduce the body’s need for bile. The main goal of your diet after gallbladder surgery is to limit your fat content.

Your diet after gallbladder surgery will have to start with a liquid diet. Since your digestive tract is still healing from surgery, you need to slowly incorporate solid food in your diet to avoid sudden vomiting and nausea. Diet after gallbladder surgery will gradually changed from liquid to solid in a matter of days post op or as tolerated by the patient.

Before discharge, your doctor will give you a list of foods to avoid and intake. The first on the list would be fatty and oily foods. Because the primary function of your gall bladder is to store the bile produced by your liver, it is important to lessen or cease your fat intake. Your bile is needed by the body to absorb and break down fats. Eating fatty and oily foods will just increase the liver’s workload to produce bile to digest fats. Supposedly, your gallbladder lessens the workload of your liver but now that its been removed, your liver will have to work alone.

The main diet after gallbladder surgery would be low-fat, low-cholesterol diet.

Foods that cause intestinal gas must also be avoided. Examples of these are radishes, cabbages, turnips, sweet potato, cauliflower and some others. Other than that, patients must maintain a diet that doesn’t include food or beverages that may irritate your digestive system. Its important to note this because one of the most common side effects of this surgery is diarrhea. In line with this, you must avoid drinking caffeinated beverages, barley, alcohol and chocolate. High fiber diet may not be advised during the first week after surgery as to avoid triggering diarrhea.

Your digestive system may not recover immediately. In fact, it may take about a few days or weeks before you could fully recover and adjust to your new diet plan. Some patients are having a hard time adjusting to the new diet plan and may need a nutritionist to guide them through it.

What Are the Best Methods for Scleroderma Treatment?

Doctors know that there are no similar or identical cases of scleroderma. Each case of the disease is different, making it necessary for your doctors to identify your disease subtype, stage, as well as the number of organs involved. This will help your doctor customize a specific scleroderma treatment that will help cure your disease The treatment must address 4 key features of the disease which are the stages of inflammation, severity of autoimmunity, presence of vascular disease, and degree of tissue fibrosis.

Anti-inflammatory medications for scleroderma treatment address two types of inflammation. The first type is inflammation of the joints (arthritis), muscles (myositis), lining of the heart (pericarditis), or lining of the lung (pleuritis). Sesositis is a collective term used if both pericarditis and pleuritis are present. Commonly used drugs for this stage of the disease are NSAID’s such as ibuprofen. Corticosteroids such as prednisone are also used if NSAID’s are not effective. Unfortunately, not all inflammatory phases of scleraderma respond to this therapy. Skin inflammation and other tissue injury caused by scleroderma are not relieved by anti-inflammatory medications.

Immunosuppressive therapy is employed to limit the progression of the inflammatory phase of scleroderma. You immune system must be suppressed as its hyperactivity is causing the damaging inflammatory process. Methotrexate, antithymocyte globulin, cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil have been studied as scleroderma treatment. So far, studies have showed that methotrexate did not produce any significant changes in skin inflammation. Cyclosporine studies are limited due to the presence of renal toxicity. Mycophenolate mofetil or cyclophosphamide are the only drugs that show promising results.

Vascular changes of scleroderma are also treated with several drugs. Calcium channel blockers such as nefedipine help dilate the blood vessels to prevent or cure Raynaud’s phenomenon, as well as reduce the incidence of digital ulcers. These drugs also help improve blood flow to the skin and heart. ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors also help fix vasospasm in renal crisis of scleroderma. Blood circulation to the lungs is improved with the use of bosentan (endothelin-1 receptor inhibitor or epoprostenol (prostacyclin).

Anti-fibrotic agents are used to address the presence of excess collagen production in the skin and other organs affected by scleroderma. This scleroderma treatment acts by reducing the collagen production or destabilize tissue collagen. These medications include colchicines, dimethyl sulfoxide, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). Not all medical experts advocate the use of these drugs as they give very little change in the collagen production. Some doctors prescribe D-penicillamine as an alternative.

Research is still being conducted to find the right medication for scleroderma treatment. So far, no universal drug is known to treat all signs and symptoms of scleroderma.

Fibromyalgia – A Curable Illness

Part 1 of a three part series on Fibromyalgia and CFS.

I am a long time sufferer of Fibromyalgia and CFS. I defeated the disease and I am now a massage therapist and instructor of massage. In this series I will tell you how to overcome the disease.

I believe that there are a number of avenues of treating Fibromyalgia that are not normally covered by doctors.

Doctors are trained to manage an illness and not trained to CURE it. They are taught only to explore options that they were taught in medical school or through trade journals and sales people pedaling medicines. This leaves other options completely out of the office visit. There are many different approaches to treating/curing Fibromyalgia. I would like you to be able to make intelligent choices on which treatments to begin first. I deal with Fibromyalgia and CFS on a daily basis and have learned a lot about it in the process. The simplest of the things we have learned is that just eating Cherries will help. Yes eating a dozen or so cherries will help with the edema (swelling in the legs usually). Cherries either fresh or dried along with blueberries easily available at most supermarkets will help a lot with reversing the edema. Many people have it since the discomfort of moving around with Fibromyalgia can be intense we tend to sit longer and with less movement the edema (swelling in the feet and legs) gets worse. The blood needs muscle action to be pumped back up to the heart and sitting just does not help it. Sitting too long can lead to painful swelling of the lower legs and while traveling as well and can cause tiny red spots that itch. These are actually small blood vessels that rupture and allow blood to be trapped under the skin when the edema is severe and the legs are not moved very much as in a long trip or sitting at a desk or through a long movie at the theatre. So eat the cherries and try to move as often as you can and sit no longer than 30- 60 minutes at a time without at least some walking.

My story is that initially I had gone to regular doctors but was unable to even get a decent diagnosis to find out what was wrong and why I was in such pain and discomfort. I found a Naturopathic doctor who gave me expensive magnesium shots, which did help and staved off some of the symptoms and allowed me to continue working and taking care of my family instead of giving up and becoming a semi-invalid like he told me some day Fibromyalgia may do. The shots helped significantly and I felt blessed that I had relief but the constant drain of $1500.00 dollars a month for two shots and office visits soon took their toll on the family budget. When the insurance company finally stopped helping to pay for them I was forced to abandon the treatment. Shortly thereafter the doctor quit his practice here and moved to Florida. I was left with no real resource to find a treatment. The magnesium shots I had found helped but were only of a temporary nature and I found myself looking forward to the relief the next shot would bring even though the shots were painful. I had previously had two children using natural childbirth and was accustomed to some levels of pain but the chronic nature of the disease begins to tire you and wear you down. (I later found that Magnesium taken in pill form at least 1000mg a day also helped).

I felt very fortunate at the time that my job as a financial analyst allowed me to sit a lot and I was not forced to stand and move around a lot and have to experience the discomfort I felt more intensely. I later found that this was exactly the wrong concept. I often wondered why my legs became so sore and would almost not bear my weight when I did try to stand. I was far from understanding that good circulation and a more active life was a major key in ridding my self from this debilitating disease. I often had no medical insurance and even when I did seldom found anyone who had even heard of Fibromyalgia much less have an effective treatment for it.

It is now a recognized condition and social security even recognizes it and can pay disability for it. I chose to not go that route even though I know others who did and will give you some advice in other installments on what is required if you would rather not do what is necessary and sit at home with a very low quality of life. (They simply do not pay if you are able to do much and the mind set of admitting you can’t and accepting it causes an even faster degradation of your body). Trust me there really is a LOT you can do to eliminate the symptoms of it. I now live a very active productive life and feel blessed that I can help people on a daily basis overcome this disease.

I discovered that massage worked wonders for me. It needed to be VERY gentle at first as most of my body was in pain. I found that if I mixed the massage oil with several essential oils I felt much better. Lavender oil mixed in along with others caused me to relax and be able to sleep better at night. By either self massaging at night or having help with it I was able to relax and get some relief. I found that as I slept better I did wake up more rested each day and did not tire quite as easily or have as much pain. I found that eating coconut oil would in a matter of days help me to feel better. It only takes 2-3 tablespoons full of oil a day to begin feeling better. You can use the oil to cook with or simply eat it. It is liquid at 70 degrees so it can be mixed into a drink or simply place in warm water as well. The coconut oil also seemed to help my energy levels. Once I was able to sleep better and have an increase in my energy levels I began to look for other ways to help myself and found many. I have found that anything which will increase circulation is a great benefit. Massage, massage cupping and Tai chi exercises are all wonderful ways to do so. If you cleanse your body with a sauna then the sweating does burn calories brings toxins out of the muscles and tissues and relaxes the muscles so the blood can flow easily. We tend to be very tense do to the pain, and that restricts the very flow of blood we need to take the toxins out of our systems.

Do’s and Don’t’s for Post Heart Attack

Week 1 (after Discharge from hospital) –

· One needs to stay indoors and not indulge in too many activities that may require vigour and energy. Stairs could be avoided and if necessary, be climbed with plenty of breaks but not more than two floors should be mounted. At any point of time, if symptoms similar to those before the heart attack are experienced, then one needs to completely cease the activity and consult the doctor before placing half a tablet of sorbitrate 5mg under the tongue (especially if there is heaviness of chest).

· A daily bath can be taken but extremely hot water should be avoided even in winters.

· Daily household activity is allowed but one must not carry heavy weights.

· Plenty of rest is recommended; one can read books, watch TV, chat with friends and family members.

· Meals should be small in portion and taken at frequent intervals. Walking immediately after meals is not recommended. Also, straining at the time of defecation is best avoided.

Week 2

One can start venturing out of the house, take short walks in the garden or out on the streets, do some cooking and other light household work.

Week 3 & 4

· Daily walks can now be taken, starting with half mile walks which could stretch to two miles over the next fortnight.

· Driving is not yet recommended.

· One can join office if no disturbing symptoms persist.

· A TMT (Street test) is advised for the next plan of action. A negative TMT test result indicated that there is no need for Angiography.

Week 5

Usually full activity can be resumed as per your body’s ability to adept without excessive strain or breathlessness.

Other Activities

Sexual Intercourse

After four weeks, one can resume sexual activity. In case this brings on chest pain or breathlessness, one should consult the doctor.

Driving & Travel

One can drive after four weeks. However, air travel can only be considered safe after six weeks.

Worrying Symptoms

One should watch out for the following symptoms to take immediate action:-

Heaviness in chest, pain similar to a heart attack – especially one brought on through minimal exertion or causing discomfort in the middle of the night, gas, upward wind, unusual sweating or rapid thumping of the chest.

In case any of the above symptoms occur, consult the doctor immediately. Some remedial measures that one can take at home would include putting a half tablet of sorbitrate 5mg or Angised tablet or GTN puff under the tongue. The same exercise can be repeated after a gap of 5 minutes or so. If there is shortness of breath, one needs to take a tablet of Lasix SOS.

Quit Your Job and Live Your Dream

I’m a “recovering” lawyer but like Marines, alcoholics, and Catholics there’s some stuff you just can’t ever shake. After 16 years of litigation, I quit being a lawyer about four years ago and I’ve never looked back. I’ve quit other jobs and professions too and I’d like to tell you about it so that you can dig up that high school dream you had of owning a bakery or being a river guide and make it happen. My dream was always to live in a cabin in the Colorado mountains and ride horses. Guess what? I’m a cowgirl, doing just that.

I can hear you already, right through the pages of this site, nay saying and yakking about your mortgage and the kids. Can we put all that aside for a minute? Can we just fantasize about quitting the job you hate? Can we just throw caution to the wind for a sec and have a little fun? Thanks, you won’t regret it.

I know about the nay saying right off the bat because when I decided to quit my lawyer job every other lawyer I knew was green with envy. Most attorneys hate their work and with good reason. It’s stressful, contentious, unrewarding, deceitful and about as much fun as a
colonoscopy. But my brethren all quaked with fear when I made my announcement:

“Geez,” each said, shaking his lawyer-head, “Wish I could do that.”

“Well, you can,” I said in my overly simplistic way.

“Nah,” sigh, “There’s the two mortgages, college tuition, my spouse’s shopping habit. No. I’m doomed.”

I never felt sorry for these guys. Anyone can leave anything. You just have to have courage, a vision, a plan, and the desire to be happy. This last one is likely the hardest because we’re so enamored of “hard work” and achievement. Hard work is just hard. Two four-letter words that spell aggravation.

It took me 16 years to leave the law though I knew after about six months in law school that I was doomed. I wanted to give the gig a fair shot, so I worked for three different firms thinking that a change of scenery would quell the restlessness inside me. Come to find out all law firms are generic. They are like a tube of toothpaste: you have to squeeze the bottom to ensure abundance at the top. This, in fact, is the paradigm of American business in general. Are you tired of being squeezed yet? Or maybe you’re the top of the tube, gooping “abundance” all over the place and you still ache inside. I have a surgeon friend – prominent, highly successful guy with more money than God – who dreams of being homeless.

“I’d eat at a restaurant and then leave without paying,” he says wistfully as his wife opens more Perrier in the wall-to-wall marble kitchen, “I’d keep all my stuff in a backpack and hitch rides around the country.”

A surgeon fantasizes about homelessness and a lawyer turns into a cowgirl. Life is weird folks, and it’s not a dress rehearsal. This is it. This is your one shot. You want to spend ten hours a day in a job that makes your chest hurt? Not me. I’m a weenie I guess. I’m not into suffering and I’m pretty much a bum. A solid citizen, I pay my taxes and take care of my kids. But at heart, I’m a bum. You probably are too.

Most lawyers are literally married to their money. I suspect this is the case with doctors, CEOs and others who make a lot of bucks. They build a lavish and unmanageable lifestyle, collect people who love to sponge off them, then have to continually work harder to make more. If you’re one of them, I hate to tell you but that whole thing is pretty dumb don’t you think? Life can be simple and easy and you don’t have to work hard. But if you’re into status, “achievement” and lots of stuff you’re just another lawyer. Sorry, that’s pretty harsh.

So the first thing you need to do to in order to quit your job is change your mind. If you really desire to simplify and change your life you can do it. Don’t let anyone or any negative thought stop you. I know, I know. The kids, the money.

For the most part, I have been a single mother raising three boys. Truthfully, when I was married it was harder to control the financial end of my life. When I got divorced (both times) it would be hard for a few years but inevitably I’d downsize, get control of my money, and be much better off. As an attorney, I always kept my salary on par with that of a teacher (my college profession of choice) so that I could make a lateral move at any time. This stunned the partners, of course, because the drill is that everyone wants to make a lot of money as fast as possible. I didn’t mind making $45,000 a year and taking a cost of living increase. But by the time I was at my last lawyer job I was making $80,000 – too much for what I needed and it still wasn’t worth the misery of being a lawyer. When I quit and went back to high school teaching I took a 50% pay cut and hardly missed a beat.

I never bought a new car; always (or mostly) a Honda, used, which I would drive until it stopped dead in the six-figure mileage area. Material stuff doesn’t interest me too much at all. I like to ski and would save up every year to take the kids to the mountains for five days. That was my extravagance. I invested wisely in real estate that was bound to appreciate. I didn’t mind moving every couple of years if the market was going to give an enormous return on my investment. My kids weren’t crazy about it but sometimes you don’t need to listen to them.

My kids went to public schools. Private education is, in my mind, about the biggest waste of money you can find. Might as well flush it down the john. What you’re paying for, when you pay $15,000 a year in high school tuition, is the privilege of telling all your buddies, “My kids go to Snob Academy.” Good for you. Nobody learns much of anything in high school. Did you?

Same thing with college. Middle age parents strap themselves financially to send Suzy to Notre Dame for $35,000 a year, mortgaging the house that’s almost paid off, so that Suzy can get drunk. Waste of money. Unless your kid’s a genius (he/she is not. Really), take that same money and go to a casino. Same odds it will pay off. By the way, if your kid is really that smart he’ll get a scholarship.

Two year community colleges are the best-kept secret in America. They provide your kid with the basics and a bargain rate. Little Johnny can get drunk every night for $6,000 a year instead of $30,000.00. Then, if he makes it through and gets his associate he can go finish up for two years at a state college. The next best college deal. But if you’re into status and you want your child to go to “the best” then hang on for your myocardial   infarction  because you can’t quit the job you hate.

After the kids and the money comes the saga about how the family has gotten used to a certain lifestyle, whatever it is. How about this? Too bad. Toughen up, buttercup. Daddy’s tired of being a workhorse. Truly, if folks love each other (as family’s profess they do) then they would do anything to support the happiness of the members of the clan. If, however, you’re easily intimidated by people having hissy fits about “stuff” they “need” I can’t really help you.

So if the first thing you need to do to quit your job is change your mind, totally rethinking the way you manage your life and your money, the next thing you need to do is dream. Remember that? Do you remember how to have a dream? Probably you are so absorbed in the daily grind of “making it” (as you see it) that you have forgotten what you are born to do. I was born to be a cowgirl. By circumstances of birth, however, I was a Philly girl, then a Jersey girl, a lawyer and a teacher before I finally donned my chaps. But I never let the dream die. I talked about it and fantasized about it and made my plan. And when my youngest son graduated high school I sold everything, packed my Honda CRV with clothes,,books, and camping equipment, and went West.

Amazing things happen when you start to really “follow your bliss” as Joseph Campbell would say. Once you leave the trappings of the life you’ve constructed, which is someone else’s idea of who you are, and you follow that creative impulse that’s been deep inside since you were a kid, benevolent forces will come out of nowhere to make it happen. Trust me on this one. The hardest part of this whole process is learning to be true to yourself, to pay no mind to the critical and harsh voices of those who would like you to stay miserable.

Change your mind. Start dreaming again. Don’t be afraid. Make a plan that begins with your decision to be happy. Then when the time comes to say good-bye to the job you’ve never liked, you’ll do it with joy and not anger. Good luck friend and happy trails.

Fish Oil Reduces Risk of Heart Attack

Historically and culturally, consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids, otherwise known as fish oils, has been thought to help the human body fight off  heart  disease and  heart   attacks .

Today, more and more studies are showing that there is a strong correlation between Omega-3 fatty acids and markedly lower instances of cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and  heart   attacks , among many other health benefits.

These studies have caused the American Heart Association to take notice and suggest that individuals who have heart disease consider a diet that is supplemented with Omega-3 fatty acids either in capsule form or from a higher consumption of fish that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. These studies show promise in the fight against  heart  disease and  heart   attack  and are even providing strong evidence that post-heart  attack  patients can benefit from a higher intake of fish oils in order to lower their chances of a second  heart   attack .

Why Are Fish Oils Good for a Healthy Heart?

Omega-3 fatty acids are made up of three basic components: DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). These three acids work individually and in tandem to reduce different risks that are associated with  heart  disease and  heart   attack .

DHA is considered to be the most important of the three acids and is essential to heart health. Unfortunately, our bodies are not able to manufacture the amount of DHA that we need in order to stay healthy. This factor alone makes it necessary to get the amount of DHA we need through diet or dietary supplements. Consider for a moment that DHA is found in our brains and is directly linked to its function. Not only could you be helping your heart, but higher brain function can also be an added benefit with the addition of fish or fish oil supplements to your diet.

Fish and fish oils are the best vehicles for providing the necessary DHA our bodies require. Thus, the consumption of fish or fish oil in capsule form provides the highest amounts of Omega-3 acids.

Omega-3 acids are also important in helping to decrease the risk of atherosclerosis and arrhythmias, which are major contributors to  heart  disease and  heart   attack . Being able to reduce these two factors is an important reason to increase the intake of fish oils.

Reducing inflammation and the production of prostaglandin are also important for a healthy heart. Prostaglandins are one of the main causes of inflammation in the vascular system. Omega-3 fatty acids look for the same areas to bind with COX 1 enzymes that Omega-6 fatty acids look for. Since the Omega-6 fatty acids are converted to a much more active form of prostaglandin by COX 1 and COX 2 enzymes than Omega-3 fatty acids are, it is essential that the sites for binding the Omega-6 acids are blocked by the Omega-3 acids. In general, the Omega-3 acids that are converted to prostaglandins are between two and fifty times less active than those produced by Omega-6 fatty acids.

Another reason why fish oils are good for a healthy  heart  is that they help to reduce triglycerides (the chemical form in which fat exists in the body), which are a leading cause of coronary artery disease, which is a major cause of  heart   attacks . When taking the American Heart Association recommended 2 to 4 gram dose of DHA and EPA, triglycerides can be reduced by as much as 50%.

Another benefit of taking Omega-3 fatty acids is that the DHA and EPA help prevent blood clots and lower blood pressure. High blood pressure and blood clots are not a good combination. These two factors alone can create an environment in your body that is conducive to stroke or heart failure.

Other benefits that help reduce the chance of  heart   attack  or  heart  disease are the possibility that Omega-3 acids increase HDL (good) cholesterol and that it may help in keeping arteries and blood vessels from closing back up after bypass surgery or angioplasty procedures.

Finally, when considering whether or not you should supplement your diet with fish oil capsules or by eating more fish, you should look at the benefits that can be derived from it, then schedule an appointment and talk with your doctor about the amount of Omega-3 acids you should take.

Evidence Supports Taking Omega-3 Supplements for Vascular Health

In a study published in August of 2009 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, data showed that taking Omega-3 supplements help to prevent and reduce problems that lead to cardiovascular diseases in both healthy people and individuals who have existing heart conditions or who have suffered from cardiac events. Some studies are also showing that Omega-3 fatty acids reduce LDL cholesterol, which is a leading cause of plaque build-up in arteries.

The studies were done with groups numbering in the thousands and over periods of time ranging from twenty to thirty years. The most surprising evidence was that which showed a sharp decrease in cardiovascular related deaths after a cardiovascular-related event such as  heart   attack  or stroke.

Previous studies have always pointed to positive links between the reduction of  heart  disease and  heart   attack  and Omega-3 fatty acids. In these studies, patients who consumed some form of Omega-3 fatty acids at least twice per week had much lower instances of plaque or clots in their arteries than those who didn’t. The reason for this is due to the clot and plaque inhibiting agents found in Omega-3 fatty acids.

In population-based studies, evidence pointed toward Omega-3 acid intake from fish as a primary aid in the prevention of strokes caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Those eating two or more servings of fish per week reduced their risk of stroke by nearly 50%.

Randomized clinical trials backed by the American  Heart  Association have shown that Omega-3 supplements can also reduce cardiovascular events, specifically death related to  heart   attacks , stroke and  heart  failure.

One such study, the Lyon Diet Heart Study, tested the effects of a Mediterranean-style diet that included fish consumed in moderate amounts. The study was performed on 302 experimental subjects and 303 control-group subjects, all of whom had survived a first  heart   attack  and all of whom shared similar coronary risk factors. After one year the beneficial effects on 93% of the experimental subjects were so overwhelmingly positive that the study was concluded. The most notable result after a four-year check up was a 50 to 70 percent lowering of the risk of recurrent heart disease. This study, alone, showed the benefits of a dietary increase in Omega-3 fatty acids and the protective effects of these acids on the vascular system.

Studies have also shown that cultures who have a diet high in fish oil, specifically Inuit, Chinese and Mediterranean cultures, also have lower instances of  heart  disease,  heart   attack  and stroke. However, as the popularity of fast food and foods high in saturated fats has grown among these diverse cultures, the instances of  heart  disease,  heart   attack  and stroke due to the build-up of plaque and high blood pressure have gone up considerably.

These studies show, overwhelmingly, that there is a correlation between the intake of Omega-3 fatty acids and not only good  heart  health, but also healthy recovery and prevention of recurring instances of  heart  disease, vascular disease,  heart   attack , plaque build-up and  heart  failure. Ignoring the evidence presented in these studies would be the worst possible scenario. Omega-3 fatty acids are not produced in any significant amount by our bodies, so it is integral that we get them through other sources such as fish, fish oils and fish oil supplements. Otherwise, we can expect more and more problems associated with vascular disease and heart disease.

An Ounce of Prevention

The hard evidence of all of the major studies points toward Omega-3 fatty acids as preventatives for  heart  disease, stroke, plaque build-up,  heart   attack  and vascular disease. Studies have also shown that fish oil supplements can also be more helpful than some cholesterol-reducing drugs when patients who suffer from chronic heart failure use it. Patients who suffer from an enlarged heart that cannot pump blood efficiently may be able to use fish oil supplements that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids to reduce the risks associated with high cholesterol.

The exciting news coming from a recent study that involved four different trials with nearly 40,000 participants showed that the heart healthy aspects of fish oil were not just limited to patients suffering from heart problems. The study revealed that these benefits actually primary in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Further evidence showed positive advantages in patients needing treatment after  heart   attacks  and in patients suffering from  heart  failure.

As the evidence mounts and it becomes more and more obvious that Omega-3 fatty acids are a primary source of heart health and prevention of different vascular diseases, the push will be on for people to be educated about what practices they can utilize to increase their intake of fish oils and fish oil supplements. Most cardiologists and scientists involved in these studies agree that the majority of the population can easily make the necessary changes in their dietary habits to reach the recommended amounts of Omega-3 acids their bodies need.

For most people, the recommendation, based on the different studies that have been done, is 500 milligrams per day. However, for those suffering from heart disease that amount should be increased to between 800 and 1,000 milligrams per day. Another factor in the amount that should be taken is family history. If your relatives, especially immediate relatives, such as parents, grandparents or great-grand parents, have suffered from heart disease or vascular disease your intake should be in the 800 to 1,000 milligram category. Even if you haven’t suffered from  heart  disease or  heart   attack , you should take this amount as a preventative.

Exactly how to achieve the level of Omega-3 fatty acids that your body needs in order to prevent  heart  disease and  heart   attacks  can be entirely up to you and what works for your lifestyle. The easiest way to get the appropriate levels is through some form of dietary supplement. There are numerous supplements on the market today that are appropriate for this purpose. The most important thing to be aware of is the purity of the fish oil. Not all fish oils are equal in the amounts of pure Omega-3 fatty acids they have in them. There is much evidence that suggest higher than normal mercury and lead levels in some fish. Obviously, these toxins are not appropriate for consumption. In order for mercury and other toxins to be removed, fish oil must go through the process of molecular distillation. This process purifies the fish oil and makes it ready for consumption.

At this time there are three principal types of fish oil supplements on the market: pharmaceutical grade fish oil, health food grade fish oil and lastly, cod liver oil. Pharmaceutical grade fish oil is processed using molecular distillation. This process eliminates toxins such as lead, mercury and PCBs. As a result the fish oil is the purest form of Omega-3 fatty acids available. Pharmaceutical grade fish oil, since it is the purest form available, is approximately 1,000 times more pure than health food grade fish oil because of the technologically advanced processes used to distill it. This ensures that even the smallest particulate level toxins have been removed leaving only the purest form of Omega-3 fatty acids. One thing to keep in mind is that because of the processes involved and the purity level of the fish oil produced, this grade of fish oil is the most expensive.

Health food grade fish oil is also molecularly distilled to remove toxins and contains the high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids our bodies need for continued heart health and heart disease prevention. One capsule can contain up to 300 milligrams of Omega-3 fatty acids and is generally perfect for anyone needing to supplement their dietary intake of fish oils. These fish oils, however, do not go through the same technologically advanced and rigorous processes that pharmaceutical grade fish oils go through. One advantage to health food grade fish oils is that most of the labels on the bottles will state what type of fish the oil was harvested from. These fish oils, since they are much lower in contaminants and toxins that standard cod liver oil, are perfectly suitable for consumption on a daily basis or as an additional boost to a diet that includes fish high in Omega-3 fatty acids. These supplements are obviously less expensive than pharmaceutical grade fish oil and generally fall into the mid-range of cost.

Cod liver oils are the lowest grade oils that contain Omega-3 fatty acids. Cod liver oil is generally inexpensive, however, if taken in too high of amounts the toxins that are in this oil can build up in the body. Cod liver oil is not as refined as pharmaceutical or health food grade fish oil supplements which means that it will contain contaminants and toxins such as lead, mercury, PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls) and even DDT (dichlor-diphenyl-trichlorethylene). Most experts do not recommend the use of cod liver oil for Omega-3 fatty acid intake or supplementation, especially in high doses.

Some considerations when taking fish oil supplements are the side effects. While most of the side effects are not hazardous, they could be considered inconvenient. The most commonly worrisome side effect is the possibility of mercury contamination. However, if you are taking a supplement that has been molecularly distilled you don’t need to worry about this at all. Health food grade and pharmaceutical grade fish oil supplements contain, at most, trace amounts of mercury and in most cases none at all. As mentioned previously, the one source that contains the most mercury is cod liver oil. The most common side effect reported by those adding fish oil supplements to their diet was burping and a fishy aftertaste or smell. Overall, though, compared to the benefits of taking fish oil supplements that side effects are safe and easy to live with.

Either freezing the capsules or taking the capsules with a meal easily diminishes the two common side effects associated with these supplements. Read the labels on the bottle, though. Some manufacturers recommend against freezing these products.

For most people who want to increase their intake of Omega-3 fatty acids, eating fish is one of the easiest ways to achieve this. Generally, eating fish twice per week will allow you to get the levels of fish oil you need. Keep in mind, though, that some fish do not contain enough fish oil to be beneficial. Catfish, for instance, is a fish that has little to no Omega-3 fatty acid. Sablefish on the other hand is one of the safest fish to eat once per week and 100 grams of this fish contains approximately 1,490 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids. This is more than enough to help in the prevention of  heart  problems such as  heart  disease and  heart   attack .

Historically and scientifically fish oils have been shown to decrease the chance of  heart   attack  and  heart  failure as well as prevent these diseases after a cardiac event. With all of the information available about the health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids and their preventative effects on  heart  disease,  heart   attacks , stroke and vascular disease, it’s easy to see that increasing the intake of these helpful oils should be a priority for almost everyone.

Reversing Heart Disease and Cholesterol

There is a variety of conditions and disorders that affect the heart that are all placed under the umbrella of heart disease. Coronary artery disease has been the overall leading cause of deaths across the globe. This leads many to want to know how can be done for the cause of reversing coronary artery disease. Types of heart disease include hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cardiomyopathy, inflammatory heart disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, coronary heart disease and Ischaemic heart disease. There are then sub categories of these main categories of heart disease.

A healthy lifestyle is a way of preventing getting any type of heart disease. This includes a healthy diet and exercise. However, some hereditary and environmental issues can predispose some people to the ailment of any type of heart disease. It is also good to know what some of the causes are in order to be able to prevent the onset and worsening of a condition of coronary artery disease.

High cholesterol and high blood pressure are two major causes of types of coronary artery disease. Cholesterol can build up in the blood vessels and lead to a condition that blocks the flow of blood to the heart. This is coronary disease and it can worsen if you do not start reversing coronary artery disease symptoms. Worsening of the condition can lead to angina when the cholesterol builds to the point where the heart is not getting enough oxygen and chest pains begin.

When the heart has become so weak that it no longer can pump blood to the heart, fluid builds up in the body tissues. The combination of high blood pressure and blocked blood vessels can cause heart failure. In a situation where blood is totally blocked from reaching the heart that part of the heart starts to die. This is what leads to a heart attack.

Besides high bad cholesterol and high blood pressure, other factors that contribute to the risk of developing a form of coronary artery disease are smoking, being overweight, not enough exercise and stress. Of course reversing coronary artery disease would entail improving upon all of these factors. If you have factors that put you at risk, it is best to address one factor at a time.

Benefits to the health of anyone, whether at risk for coronary artery disease or not include not smoking, keeping your body weight at a healthy level, regular exercise and a healthy low-fat diet. Taking these steps will not only reduce your risk of coronary artery disease, but also will reduce your risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, some cancers, stroke and osteoporosis.

There is a variety of conditions and disorders that affect the heart that are all placed under the umbrella of coronary artery disease. Heart attack has been the overall leading cause of deaths across the globe. Women seem to be the primary suffers of heart disease. With this in mind of the wife and mother of the household changes her eating and exercise habits, it will transfer over to the remainder of the family and work toward reversing heart attack risk.

The Curative Properties and Health Benefits of Banana

Bananas have a special place in diets low in fats, cholesterol and salt. In the mythological ages in Europe, a banana was called the apple of paradise. In the traditional medicine in India and the ancient Persia this golden fruit is regarded as nature’s secret of perpetual youth. To this day, banana is known for promoting healthy digestion and creating a feeling of youthfulness. Banana is one of the oldest and best known fruits of the world. It is delicious and available in all seasons.

Banana is of great nutritional value. It constitutes almost a complete balanced diet in combination with milk. It is a good source of quick energy and an excellent means of recovery from fatigue.

Hypertension and Heart Problem: Potassium salt, like beta blockers, can reduce the risk of hypertension and therefore heart problems. Banana, being a rich source of potassium and low in sodium is beneficial for high blood pressure patients.

Certain compounds in banana behave like angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. ACE is responsible for rise in blood pressure. ACE inhibiting property has been found in six varieties of banana.

Obesity: A diet of half banana and skimmed milk during breakfast is considered as an effective remedy for weight reduction.

Intestinal Disorder: Banana is used as a dietary food against intestinal disorders. As chronic ulcer patients need to avoid any acidic fruit it is the only fruit they can consume without distress. It neutralizes the hyperacidity of the gastric juice and reduce the irritation of the ulcer. Ripe banana is highly beneficial in the treatment of ulcerative colitis as it is bland, easily digestible and slightly laxative. It relieves the acute symptoms and promotes the healing process.

Constipation and Diarrhea: Banana helps in both constipation and diarrhea as it balances the colonic functions in the large intestine. It absorbs large amount of water, which helps in proper bowel movement.

Dysentery: Mashed banana with little salt is a valuable remedy for dysentery. According to traditional naturopathy a combination of ripe banana, tamarind and common salt is most effective in this disease.

Anaemia: Being high in iron content, banana is beneficial in the treatment of anaemia. It stimulates the production of haemoglobin in blood.

Allergies: The fruit is very useful for those who are allergic to certain foods and thus suffer from skin rashes, digestive disorder or asthma. Banana contains compounds which in most cases are not allergic. The fruit, however, does cause allergic reactions in certain sensitive individuals and they should avoid it.

Tuberculosis: Bananas are considered useful in the treatment of tuberculosis. The juice of the plantain or the ordinary cooked banana works miracle in the treatment of tuberculosis.

Urinary Disorder: Juice from banana stem is a well known remedy for urinary disorders. It helps to improve kidney and liver functions. It has been found that it is of great help in the treatment for the removal of kidney and gall bladder stones.

Menstrual Disorder: Cooked banana flower eaten with curd is considered an effective medicine for painful menstruation and excessive bleeding. Banana flower increases the concentration of progesterone hormone which reduces the bleeding.

Other uses: Ripe banana is chiefly eaten in a dessert or as a breakfast fruit. Unripe fruits can be cooked. Banana chips made from fully mature unripe banana are tasty and healthy. The flour prepared from the dried unripe banana is three times richer in minerals than the wheat flour. It is also easily digestible than cereal starches and is an ideal food for the infants and patients. Banana is also helpful in arthritis.

Precautions: Banana must be thoroughly ripe otherwise it is difficult to digest. The raw banana contains 20 to 25 per cent starch. But during the process of ripening this starch is fully converted to a sugar which is easily assimilated.

The fruit should not be consumed by those suffering from renal failure because of its high potassium content.

7 Questions And Answers About Hair Loss

Hair loss affects both men and women. The more you know about this condition, the better your chances of preventing its occurrence.

What causes hair loss?

Hair loss or balding can be due to a lot of causes. It can be because of hormonal problems, physical and emotional stress, certain medications, scalp disorders, iron deficiency, aging, and genetics. The most common cause is due to male pattern baldness. This happens when testosterone is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5 alpha reductase. This results in minitiaruziation of the follicles and progressive thinning of the hair. Sometimes the follicle stops producing hair completely, leading to baldness.

Can stress influence hair growth?

Both physical and emotional stress can lead to temporary balding. This is called telogen effluvium wherein the follicles are forced to enter the resting phase. The a lot of strands then fall out a couple of months later. However, in about six to nine months, new growth.

Is it true that when a man grows his hair long it will cause baldness later on?

This is not true. Balding due to pattern baldness is generally governed by heredity. Having a long or short hairstyle in your younger years will not have an effect on the degree of balding later in life.

When I wash or brush my hair, I notice that I lose around 50 strands. What causes this?

Hair normally goes through three phases which are the growth phase, transitional phase, and the resting phase. Signals are sent out by the body regarding the cycle. When the cycle is complete, the strand are shed to make way for new growth of hair on the follicle. It is normal to lose 50 to 100 strands per day because of this shedding and this accounts for the strands you see when you shower or comb.

Will brushing 100 times a day grow hair?

While brushing the hair helps distribute oil from the scalp to the ends of the hair, going overboard can do more harm than good. Brushing the hair 100 times can damage the outer layer of the hair strand or can harm the follicles.

Will washing hair under cold water cure baldness?

Running cold water over the head can improve circulation but will not cure baldness or hair loss.

Is it normal to lose some hair from the early 30s?

Yes, it is normal when you get older. Our locks becomes finer with age and the follicles on the scalp will progressively reduce.

If the cause is reversible, it is possible to stop hair loss. There are also hair loss treatments that can control hair loss and regrow hair.

My Dog Has Lumps and Tumours – What Should I Do?

Mast Cell  Tumours  (MCT) are a very common cancer seen in dogs. A mast cell is a special type of blood cell that is normally involved in the body’s response to allergens and inflammation. Sometime these cells can become cancerous and develop into mast cell  tumors .

What may appear to be a simple skin wart, tag of fatty tissue or lump may in fact be a mast cell  tumor ,as such can be impossible to diagnose by just observation. The majority of animals that develop a MCT are middle aged to older pets but it is possible to see them in dogs as young as six months.

Certain breeds are more prone to the  tumor  including Boxers, Staffordshire Bull Terriors, Pugs. Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Boston Terriors and Weimaraners. Sharpels are especially susceptible to the early development of particularly aggressive mast  tumors . Some MCT  tumors  may be present for months or years before rapidly spreading.

Occasionally manipulation of the  tumor  may result in the release of histamines causing local swelling and redness the mass may be described by the owner as going up or down in size over a 24 hour period. The behaviour of MCT is also highly variable, ranging from a grade one  tumor  that may be cured by surgery alone, through to more aggressive grade three  tumors  which is very likely to spread to other sites (Known as Metastases).

MCT is usually easy to identify under the microscope by taking a sample of cells with a needle from the lesion. Once identified, surgery is the first best treatment. Because the  tumors  are invasive the vet must remove it with a large margin of normal tissue both around and the underneath to ensure complete removal. In some cases, it is impossible to remove all the cancerous cells due to location of the  tumor , these cases may require further surgery or chemotherapy or radiation treatment to clear the local disease.

After Removal the vet will send the tissue to the laboratory for Histopathology. For those MCT that have already spread the prognosis is not always the best. The goal of treatment for these dogs is to attempt to shrink the  tumours  with chemotherapy and to maintain a good quality of life for as long as possible by controlling the symptoms of mast cell present in the body-Never give up hope, early detection is the answer, always take your dog to your local vet should you find any lumps on your dog.

Do You Know How to Cure Tinnitus? Find Out in 3 Simple Steps

If you have been struggling with tinnitus then you need to know how to cure tinnitus. Many medical procedures claim to cure tinnitus, but really all they do is leave you a light wallet and may even damage your hearing. Here I am going to show you 3 steps that you can use to be well on your way to curing your tinnitus once and for all.

1. The first thing that you need to do is eliminate the problem that is causing your tinnitus. Most of the time this can come from loud music, a lot of exposure to loud noises at work such as a machine shop, and even stress can cause tinnitus. If you are constantly around loud noises then wear ear plugs, if you are under a lot of stress, try some relaxation techniques and exercises.

2. The next thing that you need to do is start to take a multivitamin. Sometimes vitamin and mineral deficiency can cause tinnitus, which is why this is a good place to start. Even if a multivitamin would not help your tinnitus, proper diet and exercise along with educated supplementation is going to help you feel better.

3. The third thing is that you need to find an all natural cure that is both safe and effective. I was able to do this, and it has made all of the difference. Learning how to cure tinnitus does not have to be rocket science, all you need to do is to be educated and accept the fact that an all natural method is going to be your ticket to a tinnitus free lifestyle.

The Top Herbs For Toothache Home Remedy

The herbs listed in this article is an old standard kitchen toothache remedy.

One great natural toothache remedy is to either ground clove or pure food grade clove oil on the affected tooth. This is the most well known of all herbal toothache remedies. I list this remedy first since most people have cloves in their spice rack.

Other great herbal toothache remedies include:

A few drops of tea tree essential oil infused in water. Cleansing the mouth with this solution can give rapid relief to inflamed gums. It is a very potent antibacterial. Tea tree oil is an important component to our Travel First Aid Kit.

A combination of the following items used on a regular basis can be very helpful as part of a home remedy for toothache. First, a calendula toothpaste such as Weleda brand seems to be very preventive in nature. Calendula has a long history of being used for the gums and teeth. Myrrh toothpastes are another option (Tom’s of Maine makes one). Both of these herbs have astringent and antibacterial effects. These are available in all natural foods markets and in many supermarkets.

Echinacea. This cold and flu remedy has a long history for being a toothache remedy. In fact, a Lakota elder I know calls it the “toothache plant.” That’s what his grandmother called it as well. Try using Echinacea tincture. The best toothache remedy would be to use fresh Echinacea root dug from the ground, so if you have some in your garden, try it some day!

If your filling comes out…A paste of slippery elm powder and water put into a tooth where the filling has come out, will be very helpful until one gets to the dentist. And a mouthwash made with sage (Salvia officinalis) or calendula (Calendula officinalis) and a pinch of salt, is beneficial to bleeding gums.

Garden or outdoors toothache remedy:

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), originated in Europe and Asia, but is now naturalized throughout North America. Yarrow grows wild in fields, meadows, roadsides and open woodlands. Yarrow has the ability to stop bleeding and aids in healing wounds. But the root of the yarrow is also an anesthetic. To relieve toothaches, apply the fresh root or leaves to the gums or teeth. It’s yet another great herbal toothache remedy.

Raw plantain leaves crushed and placed on the aching tooth will also help stop a toothache. If you happen to have a little salt with you, mix a little salt with the chewed leaves.

Here are some basic toothache remedies…especially if you do not have ANY of the above ingredients and you need toothache relief NOW!

Philip D. Corn, D.D.S., a private practitioner in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and director of the Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry, says a toothache may be a symptom of several things. The pulp of your tooth or the gums around your throbbing cuspid could be infected. There could be decay in a molar. You may have a cracked bicuspid. Or you might have been smacked in the mouth. But the ache could simply be an irritation from a piece of food caught between two teeth, adds Jerry F. Taintor, D.D.S., chairman of endodontics at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. Or it could be a backlash from a sinus problem.

So, until you can get your tooth checked out by a professional, here are some toothache remedy ideas Dr. Corn and Dr. Taintor give:

  • Rinse your toothache away. Take a mouthful of water (at body temperature) and rinse vigorously, says Dr. Taintor. If your toothache is caused by trapped food, a thorough rinse may dislodge the problem.
  • Floss gently. If swishing doesn’t work, you can try to pry the popcorn hulls or tiny bits of meat out from between your teeth by flossing, says Dr. Taintor. Be gentle! Your gums are likely to be sore.
  • Take a “shot” to numb the pain. Hold a swig of whiskey over the painful tooth, says Dr. Corn. Your gums will absorb some of the alcohol and that will numb the pain. Spit out the rest.
  • Rinse with salty water. After each meal and at bedtime, stir 1 teaspoon of salt into an 8-ounce glass of water (again, at body temperature), says Dr. Corn. Hold each mouthful, roll it around your mouth. Spit.
  • Try a hand massage. When you have an achy tooth, this can ease the pain by 50 percent. Rub an ice cube into the V-shaped area where the bones of the thumb and forefinger meet. Gently push the ice over the area for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • The doctors also recommend using cloves or clove oil.

NOTE: In my Roots and Branches Herbal Home Study Course, I recommend people practice herbal nourishment at the same time they are treating an acute situation herbally or allopathically. In this course, I teach you how to make an herbal infusion. First Aid Kit.

Bronchitis Symptoms Can Look Like a Common Cold

Bronchitis symptoms normally start out as common cold symptoms. That means common upper respiratory symptoms such as a cough, which may be dry or moist, and a stuffed up nose with catarrh.

This normally then progresses to your chest, as the lungs become congested. Then your cough is wet, moist or rattling. The mucus can be muco-purulent or purulent. But you often can’t bring it up, despite the cough. And you are short of breath, because the presence of so much mucus in your lungs stop them working efficiently.

As the condition worsens, you tend to become weaker, sleeping more.

What this means is that your immune system is so compromised, it can’t stop the condition getting worse.

But there is help at hand. There is a wonderful homeopathic medicine which can help you. But you must know how to ‘read’ your symptoms. Your symptoms are unique to you, not to the disease label. If you can work out what your unique symptoms are, then you can use homeopathy effectively.

So let’s have a look at the homeopathic medicine Antimonium tartaricum (Ant tart for short) and the symptoms you need, for it to work for you.

  • a rattling cough
  • one where you just can’t bring up the mucus
  • when you feel better sitting rather than lying
  • with weariness
  • and you are prone to this condition, especially in winter

These are exactly the same as the common bronchitis symptoms.

This medicine is particularly good for those symptoms when they occur at the extremes of life – in new-borns and the elderly. Bronchitis symptoms are much more common in new-borns and the elderly. An elderly person who is failing, tends to have what is often referred to as a ‘death rattle’.

All this means is that they have a rattling respiration.
