Give Your Child the Gift of Your Presence

Presence. Your presence. It’s the greatest gift you can give your child. Most parents spend a lifetime managing their children, scheduling events, grooming, and educating them, yet few actually enter their child’s heart. Being fully present is the key to entering your child’s heart.

So what does being fully present mean? It means that we stop the constant chatter in our minds that keeps us mulling over past events and scheduling, fearing and anticipating future events. It means that we stop judging our child’s behavior and trying to shape him into who we think he should be, and become curious about who his is, right here and now, in this moment. It means we pay attention to how we feel on the inside and allow ourselves to feel that deep connection with our child. Instead of unconsciously pushing his little arms and legs into his sleeper, while reviewing the day’s schedule in our minds, we bring our love and attention to the little person in front of us, talk to him, fill him with love, and treat him with the utmost respect.

It’s important to maintain this habit of being present and connecting with our children as they grow older. Instead of rushing by them in the hallway, take a moment to stop, look them lovingly in the eyes and acknowledge their presence.

It’s easy to get so busy managing our child that we forget to treat her like a real person. Children long to be treated with the same kind of love and respect we show our friends. At a seminar I gave on “Communicating with Children,” a woman shared the following story with me:***One day as I was bustling about doing my housework, the doorbell rang. You can imagine my surprise when I opened the front door to see my four-year-old son standing there. “Jonathon, get in here!” I said automatically. But Jonathon acted like he hadn’t heard me and said, “Hello, Ruth! How are you? I’ve come for tea.” “Jonathon,” I started to protest and he interrupted me again. “I’ve come for tea, Ruth,” he repeated insistently.

Suddenly it was like I was hit with a lightening bolt and I understood what he was up to. He just wanted to be treated like one of my friends and this was his way of telling me that. So I changed my tune and invited him in respectfully. The two of us went up to the kitchen, poured ourselves some tea (although I do believe he opted for hot chocolate) and had a short little chat – person to person, friend to friend. The chat didn’t take very long, but the lesson he taught me has lasted a lifetime. That was nearly 15 years ago, and even today we are more than mother and son – we’re good friends, too.” Quality time with our child means being present in body mind and spirit and connecting with that child in the things we do with him. It won’t take any longer to do those things. In fact, we can save ourselves and our child a lot of irritation and frustration when we take advantage of every day moments to deepen our bond together.

How much time do you spend trying to get your child to listen? “How do I get my child to listen to me?” is the theme song for so many an exasperated parents. The truth of the matter is that the only real authority you have in your child’s life is that which she is willing to give you. That willingness is based on her attachment and connection to you. Building that attachment means being consciously present with your child in the many things that you do.

Instead of yelling from the next room and telling your child to stop running… and then yelling again… and again… while your child continues to run and ignore, try connecting with your child physically and lovingly. Literally stop her in her tracks, kneel down to her level, and let her know she can run outside or play quietly in. Connect with her and wait until she makes her decision and then lovingly escort her outdoors or to a quiet activity indoors.

If we think about it, it is our own   irritability  and frustration that weakens our attachment with our child and encourages her to tune us out. That  irritability , impatience and frustration are a result of our own resistance to this moment. It is because we are not present, and our  irritability  and resistance to the moment keeps us frustrated and disconnected from our child. We try to change our child’s behavior; thinking then our  irritability  will go away. However, our children simply reflect our  irritability  or ignore it in self defense and we end up more frustrated than before!

The key is to remind ourselves we have the power to shift our own inner environment by becoming fully conscious of how we are feeling right now. As Ekhardt Tolle so aptly points out in his marvelous book, The Power of Now, our power lies only in this moment. We choose how to respond to every situation we encounter. Most of us unconsciously resist the present moment in hopes of getting on to something better.

“But what if the current moment is filled with the piercing wails of a child screaming in my ear?” you ask. As nerve racking as that can be, it is possible to remain calm on the inside and simply send love. Children feel our vibration more than they hear our words or threats. So focus on remaining calm and present. Breathe deeply and notice how long it takes for you to feel calmer. The Heartmath Solution studies show that breathing as if through the heart significantly calms the entire system. Your attention to your own inner world will bring you into the moment and help you to connect with and calm your child.

It is easy to get so lost in the roles, rules and obligations of parenthood that we forget to really enjoy our children. We get so busy instructing them in proper manners, and in trying to manage their behavior, that we miss out on really connecting with them.

Somewhere along the line, we got the idea that our job was to control our children. So instead of taking the time to just be with them, to truly getting to know who they are and what makes them tick, we embarked on a crusade to manage their behavior and shape them into who we think they should be. (Or maybe who we think we should have been?)

One of the greatest insights that I have ever received came from a participant in my 9 Ways to Bring Out the Best in You & Your Child parenting course. I shall leave it with you now as I believe that it reveals the key to entering your child’s heart. She said, “I finally discovered why I was having so much trouble with Jeremy…no strategies really seemed to work… you see, I thought that correcting was more important than connecting, but now I know – connecting is more important than correcting!”

Best Natural Cures For Depression

I guess everyone has been in a stage wherein they’ve been depressed and I myself have been in this situation a lot of times. So how can someone really cope with  depression ? Is there such a remedy wherein you can cure it? Can you really self help  depression ? There are over the counter remedy for  depression  but as everybody say “you will just get immune to it in the long run and the medicine that used to work for you will no longer be of help” or you might need to increase the dosage every once in a while. Being said the latter, is there any other alternative other than rushing to the drug store and buy over the counter medicines?

Yes there is! There are a lot of things out there that can help you cope or cure  depression .

But I would still suggest that you consult your doctor first, especially if you have any other health conditions going on (seek help for  depression  with professional). Here is the list on natural cures for  depression  you can put in your diet regimen and lifestyle.

1. Socialize – I advise you that take time to talk to friends and mingle with people whom you know will help you and support you with your situation. It will also help if you get yourself busy with things that will take your mind set away from all the troubles you are having! Do a hobby with your friends or close relatives, there are tons to choose from!

2. Diet and Exercise – The above are some of the many things that can help you cure  depression , and also bear in mind that natural cures for  depression  are much more effective if you will take care of your health. That means you have to maintain a proper diet and regular exercise!  Depression  cures itself if you will help yourself in the process. Other than the cure/remedy that has been said above, you should take time to get an activity that will help you take your mind off to things that worries you! Exercise is one of them, take it from me.

I have been depressed a lot of times and it really helped me forget my worries (and forget that I am depressed) every time I go to the gym or jog around the neighborhood. Don’t forget to avoid things that are unhealthy like alcohol, fatty and oily food for this may trigger your  depression  (anything unhealthy while you are depressed will just worsen your situation).

3. Herbal supplements – so what are some  depression  supplements you can take (in moderation and full knowledge of how to use)? Here’s a partial sample which you might want to consider as an alternative cure or natural  depression  remedies: Omega-3 fatty acids, Folic Acid, 5-HTP, St. John’s Wort, Chamomile tea, Holy basil and sage tea.

Social Phobia – Sociophobia Fear Treatment and Cure

Most people who have this  phobia  realize that their fear is irrational but can’t stop the thought that they are being judged negatively. They despair of ever finding a social  phobia  and fear treatment and cure.

Social phobics have great difficulty in dealing with the following situations:

– Being the center of attention

– Dealing with people in authority

– Meeting new people

– Teasing or criticism

– All social encounters, especially involving strangers

– Having someone watch while they are doing something

– Going around the room and having to say something

What all of these events have in common is that they provoke feelings of being considered incompetent, unworthy or stupid. Many people have a physical reaction as well as the emotional one.

Blushing is very common for folks who have social  phobia  problems. Sweating, dry mouth and rapid breathing and heart beat are also common physical reactions to the dreaded social situations. The most common social  phobia  reaction is a constant intense anxiety that is ever present.

Hear are some real life stories from people who suffer or have suffered from social  phobia .

A young woman finds it terrifying just to walk down the street to to the newsstand. She is afraid that someone will stop and talk to her and she will have to respond. She knows that the stranger will realize how scared she is. She hopes that she can buy her paper and get home without having to speak with anyone.

A man calls in sick to work anytime he might have to do an oral presentation or speak at a meeting. His job is in jeopardy. But he is so afraid people will think his presentation is poorly done, or may expect him to answer questions and they may decide his voice is weak and he doesn’t know his material.

Would you believe that there are cases that are much more severe than these? If you are a social phobic you can relate to these folks and maybe your case is worse. Just have faith that you can find a social  phobia  and fear treatment program that will work for you.

People who have social  phobia  problems may know that people are not truly judging or criticizing them however, the problem s they can’t stop the feelings that come up when they are facing social situations.

By now you are probably wondering when am I going to hear about a treatment or cure. There is no magic pill that you can take and boom! you are cured. However with the right therapist and time you can feel normal again.

Social  phobia  is the most effectively treated by cognitive behavior therapy. When you decide to get help search for a specialist who understands and knows how to treat social  phobia . Ask questions and stay informed about the newest treatment modalities.

Your therapist has to understand your feelings that other people are judging you negatively. If your mental health worker doesn’t seem to get this, look elsewhere.

You need and deserve a therapist who takes your fears seriously. Ask questions and run don’t walk away from any professional who tells you to force yourself to engage in social interaction. You have been dealing with this problem your whole life and now it is time for your cure!

The essentials of freeing yourself are:

– Stick with the treatment program, even if you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel

– Learn as much as you can about the condition

– Believe that you can beat this if you work at your social  phobia  and fear treatment and cure

Do I Have Social Anxiety?

This question may be asked by people who feel insecure or unhappy in the social relationships which they have and who feel that perhaps their situation could be improved.

People suffering from this disorder will often feel evasive when asked to join in with new social situations or where there are to be expected a lot of people that they do not already know. People with social anxiety will tend to take family and friends to new social events, and then spend all their time staying with their group and not talking to or mixing with any other people as would have been intended.

People with this social challenge often think that people are looking at or noticing them and that the opinion of these other people is somehow critical of them. Although the attention of people with social anxiety is firmly upon themselves, they tend to regard themselves in a negative way. A person with social anxiety may often check in the mirror, but it is not in the way of preening themselves, simply to reassure them that everything is still in order.

As with looking frequently in any available mirror, or in staying within their group and not mixing with other people, those with social anxiety may often project an entirely false impression of themselves to other people. Some may be the perfect wallflower and be unresponsive to any attempt to involve them in dancing or conversation, others may try to cover up a sense of inadequacy with bombastic, loud behavior. Others still may seem aloof because they don’t open up in conversation, others can be so free in their general disclosures that no one would want to confide in them. Whatever may be their “ploys” to feel more comfortable in any social circumstance, those with social anxiety can often end up missing out on an opportunity for genuine relationship because of the defenses that they put out to avoid feelings of social anxiety.

Often people with social anxiety cannot see how it is that their own social behavior is sabotaging any possibility of improvement. Many will find themselves a particular “niche” in life that to some extent satisfies their need for social activity which also ensures that exposure to social anxiety is minimized.

For someone suffering from anxiety it can be a big job for them to start to work on the causes of their anxiety and to learn how to improve their overall capacity to function in social situations. For most people it is the general process of living, from childhood through to adulthood which gives us the experience, opportunity and practice that we all need to become good with social skills.

It needs to be also recognized that at many social events there is a set of rules, perhaps unspoken, but which people attending are expected to both know about and to comply with. In such formal situations it is easy for social anxiety to arise, even for someone who is experienced, simply because you are not familiar with is expected of you.

People with social anxiety find themselves refusing invitations when there is no real reason not to go. Often they will feel much more comfortable when they realize that they won’t have to go to a particular social event and can stay at home instead. They may find that their circle of friends and associates is extremely limited, yet feel uncertain or apprehensive about doing anything to change this. They may feel extremely self-conscious in social situations, feel unable to interact and think that everyone is looking at them or talking about them or somehow noticing them. They can also feel isolated as if everyone else but them is having a good time and they are being ignored. When people do try to befriend them they are so difficult to communicate with that people give up the attempt. When they do try to involve themselves with a group they may find themselves blushing or stammering, or find themselves unable to think of anything to say at all.

If any of the above sounds like you, then yes, you may have social anxiety.

Alternative Cancer Treatments

Cancer is a leading killer of people all over the world. There are some treatments for it but the survival rates for people with cancer are significantly lower. Over six billion dollars is spent each year on cancer treatment research. There have been strides in treatments and as a result the mortality rate is dropping and length of life is extending. Typical treatments for cancer include surgery, chemo therapy and radiotherapy. However, there are also alternative cancer treatments available. It is important to discuss these options with your physician before undertaking any alternative treatment.

Studies indicate that when taken alone, alternative treatments are not effective in prolonging life. However, if used in conjunction with traditional treatments, they can be very effective and can enhance the quality of life as well as prolong it. There are several categories of alternative treatment available and each should be discussed with your physician and the medical professional who is an expert in the type of treatment.

Mind and body treatments will help enhance a positive outlook on life and will help you to better deal with the effects of cancer. These include relaxation therapy, reflexology, acupuncture, yoga and meditation. Immunotherapy is a rapidly advancing field that is showing positive results. It increases the boy’s ability to ward off infection and may someday replace chemotherapy and radiotherapy as a treatment. Herbal and nutritional therapies also are widely used. Protecting the body and keeping healthy will assist in ensuring the body is strong and able to sustain the treatments.

Make sure to thoroughly research the alternative cancer treatments available before undertaking any. Also, it is very important to discuss these with your doctor as some may counteract or react to existing medications and therapies you are involved with. The most effective means of treatment is to combine both traditional and alternative treatments for the most well rounded course of action available.

Treating Nail Fungus

Treating nail fungus (onychomycosis) has always been a difficult challenge. A fungal infection in a fingernail or toenail creeps up slowly and insidiously, often starting as a slight discoloration and advancing bit by bit until you suddenly realize that there really is a problem. The retreat of the fungus is just as slow, and complete resolution of symptoms must wait until the nail has grown out completely and replaced itself – many months.

The length of time it takes to be successful in treating onychomycosis will test the patience of many a fungal nail sufferer. The long wait can make you doubt that the nail fungus product you are using is having any effect. Interestingly this is just as true of the prescription drugs for treating nail fungus as it is for old home remedies and natural treatments – you have to use the preparation for many months and wait for the nail to grow out.

There are many types of nail fungus product available to consumers today: they range from over the counter antifungal lotions, creams, and oral prescription drugs, to a selection of remedies derived from natural sources. The natural treatments are worth investigating: in a way, treating nail fungus with a natural treatment makes sense because plants must fight off the attacks of fungi in the environment all the time. Some plants have extremely effective defenses against fungal invasion, including natural chemicals that can be extracted and used to fight of fungi in human infections.

One of the most promising natural remedies marketed for treating nail fungus is tea tree oil, an herbal extract of the Australian tea tree. Though it can be purchased as a pure oil, many topical preparations use it in combination with other herbal extracts. At least one nail fungus product uses both a topical herbal preparation, including tea tree oil, and an herbal oral supplement to fight off the stubborn fungi that get established in human nails. Preliminary scientific evidence and the testimonials of those who have tried it indicate that this approach really does work, and the low cost compared to prescription drugs tends to make it appealing to many people.

No nail fungus product will work if the problem is not fungus to begin with, so before choosing an over the counter or natural healing product, have a medical professional look at your infection and confirm that a fungus is causing it. If there is any doubt, a sample of the nail can be sent to a medical laboratory for testing. Once you are sure of what you are dealing with, you’ll be able to select a product for treating nail fungus – but remember, treatment takes a long time. You have to be patient.

Many Auto Accident Victims Also Suffer From Ankle Injuries

Every day thousands of people are involved in car accidents every day. Sprained ankles are a common injury in motor vehicle accidents. Most people unfortunately do not think to mention their ankle pain after the accident, concentrating only on their neck and back pains. Without knowledge of the ankle injury your healthcare provider cannot correct the problem, and that will likely lead to a life of future ankle and foot problems.

The ankle is a very complex joint designed to absorb massive amounts of force as you walk, run and jump. This absorption of forces helps to protect your knees, hips, and back. With just walking your ankles will absorb 125% of your bodyweight, while running they absorb approximately 250%-300% of your bodyweight.

Ankle sprain is an overstretching or tearing of one or more of the ligaments of the ankle/foot. Ligaments are very tough fibrous bands of connective tissue that help to hold bones in place, and keep them from moving too far. Most ankle sprains, approximately 95% are inversion sprains. An inversion sprain occurs when the foot rolls to outside with the toes pointing downward. This motion happens when your foot is on the brake or the floor board, while being rear-ended or hit from the side.

With the ankle injury it is very important that the ankle, as well as the other injuries, be evaluated by a healthcare specialist that is trained in the evaluation and treatment of auto accident and extremity injuries. Without a proper diagnosis it is impossible to have a proper treatment protocol for your injury.

Ankle sprains are placed in 3 categories, based on the severity of the injury. There are some clues that will tell you how severe the could be, such as a popping sound, rapid onset of swelling, and amount of bruising, but the severity is really only determined after an evaluation by a trained professional.

Grade 1 sprains are mild over stretching of one or more of the ligaments of the ankle. With these injuries you can usually still walk and run in a straight line without too much problem.

Grade 2 sprains are moderate to severe over stretching and possible mild tearing of the ligaments of the ankle. With this injury the person usually can walk but is unable to run and lateral motions are not possible in most cases.

Grade 3 sprains are moderate to full tearing of one or more of the ligaments in the ankle. With this injury the person generally cannot bear any weight without bracing.

Grade 1 and 2 sprains can be treated with manual manipulation of the affected joints of the ankle and a thorough rehabilitative exercise program. These injuries usually heal very quickly if treated properly.

Grade 3 sprains will often times require an evaluation by an orthopedic specialist. These will often be required to be casted and on occasion have a surgical procedure. After this they too will require a proper rehabilitation program.

Make sure to get your ankle evaluated after injury and save yourself from years of future problems.

We Find Love

Defining love is just like defining an ‘ocean’. Every time you take a plunge into the ocean you are bound to find something new and novel. This is because of the human psyche which is different for different individuals. What could be said to apply to one may fail in case of another. But it seems some common threads exist, which bind people in love and some of such tenets governing why people fall in love has helped in defining it.

Why do we fall in love? To fill the empty spaces in our lives, or just because it is in vogue? If only we run love like a race, our every strength would go into crossing the finish line first before anyone else.

Let us take a quick second through definitions of love we have heard in times past. Many great minds came up with what they felt could best describe this indescribable phenomenon. Some call it a feeling; some even see it at first sight. To some it is an endowment from above and to the others, it is meant for babies, or probably fools. Naturally, love is mostly defined based on individual experiences. Those who have been   bruised  and battered by it say it is not worth it, they don’t ever get to see the light because they have shut their eyes. Some who have enjoyed a bit of it but still hoping for so much more say it is the unconditional commitment towards an imperfect person. That is about the closest so far and it almost broke my defences except for one simple reason. Whatever is unconditional is expected to come from a perfect being, don’t you agree? Then how can an unconditional commitment come from a conditional human? Don’t you find it ironical that a perfect commitment is found in an imperfect person?

Come with me on a quick journey into the holy book. Enough of the fairy tales we grew up believing and dreaming about. Let us wake up and step to the balcony where the air we are sure will take more rook. Did the Holy Book not fail to find a greater love than a man who laid down his own life for a friend? There’s something about love, true genuine undiluted unadulterated unconditional love that involves a “death”; i.e. a total “end”. This is obviously not a physical death, but of course a dying to self, to own beliefs, to rigid perceptions, to selfish desires, to the most amazing past and to charming dreams, to the promising friends and to captivating reliefs, even to amiable ambitions, until you wish the whole world would hear your scream.

The simple love equation is LOVE = SACRIFICE (GIVE) = DEATH = LIFE.”God, who so LOVED us, GAVE his Son so that He can HAVE us… ” There is no love without giving and there is always a having that comes after the giving. The giving in this context transcends material gifts; it’s more of the offering that comes with the commitment of being in a relationship. If this is LOVE, then it is the dying to, i.e. the total and absolute abstinence from, Every Single Thing that seems to want to come between you and the other person. For to love is to give, to give is to die and to die is to live, never to die again. For in death alone does a seed find life in the ground. A time to be born is a time to live, a time to live is a time to give, a time to give is a time to die, a time to die is a time to love and a time to love is a time to live and never die again. Whosoever saves his/her life (desires, interest, beliefs, perceptions etc) loses it but those who lose theirs save it. Love begins with an acceptance and then it grows into appreciation. True love is not missing. THE ONLY WAY TO FIND IT IS TO FIRST LOSE IT i.e. give/sacrifice it! But if per adventure you lose it and didn’t find it, then it was never meant to be yours in the first place. Just shake off the dust from your heels to the ground and decide what you deserve and what deserves you. Go boldly for it, and as hard as it may be, you will find love! Or better still, love will find you!

Lower Back Pain and Hip Pain Causes

During a person’s lifetime one thing that is common is that people will suffer from lower back pain. Most of the time the cause of low back pain is a bump or even an accident. When this happens it is usually a mild case and treatment is usually easy.

Others will find they have back pain and don’t know what caused the pain and there is no way to control the occurrence of the pain. Spinal conditions are a reason for back pain and many are born with this condition. The sooner you can find the source of the pain, the sooner you and your doctor can treat that back pain and hopefully reduce or eliminate the back pain for good.

Things to consider for the Under 60 population As we all know age can play a role in the causes of low back pain. Older people are usually grouped into a separate category. The reason for this is they sometimes are prone to degenerative conditions, like arthritis.

If you are under sixty years old with back pain there are 3 main categories that you may fall into. These are grouped by common symptoms:

Herniated Discs – Numbness and pain that shoots down the legs from the low back. Pain increases with long periods of sitting or standing. Degenerative Disc Disease – Making certain moves and being in specific positions can cause the onset of back pain. This pain can become chronic and extremely painful. Stress Fractures – Can be very painful and caused when walking or standing. If you are older: A cause of back pain common for those that are older is Osteoarthritis. This can stiffen your back and cause pain. The onset of this pain is usually in the morning or late at night.

Lumbar spinal stenosis is also an cause for back pain in the elderly. Pressure is put on the nerves connected to the spine and causes pain down the legs. Another common reason for pain in the back is by disc degeneration.

Muscles around and supporting the discs go into a spasm causing chronic back pain. Mechanical pain is common because the disc that is degenerating is becoming inflamed. By replacing the bad disc with an artificial one you help relieve the pain associated with degenerative disc disease.

Other less known conditions for low back pain There are some lesser known conditions for lower back pain causes and treatments. These lesser known conditions can make it difficult to diagnose a lower back pain cause as well as to figure out a treatment.

Causes of lower back pain:

Infection Spinal tumor Fibromygalia Sacroiliac joint syndrome Piriformis syndrome Sciatica Poly neuropathy All of these can be causes of low back pain, even though they are more uncommon. They still can be treated, when diagnosed correctly.

Some good news If you can determine the cause of lower back and hip pain, it is easier to find a treatment for the pain. By treating the back pain correctly you will be better off.

How To Choose The Best Vitamin Supplements

Based on my over 25 years of experience, I feel I can offer to you some simple yet effective tips when choosing quality vitamin supplements for not all nutrition supplements are created equal. Until there is a medical review of emerging nutritional supplements, hopefully this short article will be that guide for you.

Clearly, it’s vitally important to your health that you choose vitamin supplements that are actually USED by the body and not quickly eliminated. Did you know that 90% of nutrition supplements are actually urinated out? Don’t believe me? Take an off-the-shelf vitamin brand, follow their recommended daily allowance and within an hour, sometimes less, you will urinate it out – your urine will be a significantly darker yellow color. I know talking about body elimination is not something one talks at parties, but it is important to understand what is happening here.

Why does that happen? It’s because the vast majority of nutrition supplements are not assimilated by the body, yet the supplement industry of which nutrition supplements are a part, are a literal multi-billion dollar a year enterprise.

Without any further adieu, here are the key things to look for when choosing quality vitamin supplements.

  1. Product Development and Nutrient Reactions: The supplement you’re considering should be rigorously tested and its creation process overseen by certified professionals. Vitamins work in a precise symbiotic synergism. Getting optimal assimilation is 0% art, 100% science. In other words, the vitamin supplements should be scientifically formulated and certified with each batch (see point #2).
  2. Manufacturing Procedures: These should utilize pharmaceutical blending not paddle/ribbon blender-type mixers. In addition, contact the company to ask if they have a Certificate of Analysis (COA) on file, confirming the potency of each batch. If the company ignores you or hesitates, that’s not a good sign. Lastly, you should select a vitamin supplements maker that adheres to pharmaceutical GMP compliance – this is the highest standard possible.
  3. Optimal Delivery System: The supplement should have enteric coating for optimal assimilation in the human system. (I discuss this more in depth later on in this article.) This is critical yet almost nobody considers this when choosing a vitamin. If they did, they would save a lot of money.
  4. Product Quality & Freshness: The ingredients the vitamins are made from should be made in smaller batches with the manufacturing process NOT outsourced out to other manufacturers. Remember, most vitamin and mineral supplement makers, as well as herbal product manufacturers are unregulated by the FDA. While this has its pros and cons, a vast majority of vitamin supplements don’t even insert the claimed ingredients into the supplement and contamination is a legitimate threat (again, this is why you want pharmaceutical GMP compliance).
  5. Pharmaceutical Grade Quality: You want a vitamin supplement that is pharmaceutical grade quality. Again, look for vitamins that are “enteric coated.”
  6. Value for Money: They should be inexpensive yet provide discernible benefits. However, with that said, the old saying of “you get what you pay for” is true. For a nutraceutical-quality, pharmaceutical grade vitamin supplement, expect to pay $30 to $38 or so per 90-day supply. You get what you pay for. In the long run, paying for quality is never dumb.
  7. Vitamins & Co-Factors, Standardized Herbal Extracts, Amino Acids, Active Enzymes, & Essential Minerals and Trace Elements: Ideally, a multi-vitamin should have vitamins but the necessary co-factors along with the other elements mentioned in the bullet point #7. The more comprehensive containing a broad range of synergistic nutrients and micro-nutrients is essential for maximum impact.
  8. Excipients. The “excipients” should be the highest quality. Ask the vitamin manufacturer as to what specific excipients they’re using. Excipients are the binding agents that hold together the vitamin tablet. Excipients are substances that are added to vitamin formulas or tablets that bind while not providing nutritive value. Examples of excipients include monoglycerides, magnesium stearate, modified food starch, etc. Some vitamin companies even use silica – or what people usually refer to as “sand” – as an excipient.
  9. Easy to Use: They should be easily ingestable at any time.
  10. Product Delivery: The supplement should be easy to order and shipping should ideally be free.
  11. Money-Back Guarantee: The longer the guarantee, the better. Look for guarantees longer than 30 days. You want 90 days or more. The longer the guarantee, the more convinced the manufacturer is of their product.
  12. Contact Information: It should be very easy to contact the company via phone and email.

Manufacturing Process

Another key component of vitamin potency comparison is the manufacturing process. There are four main areas of manufacturing that are relevant here, i.e., scientific formulation, potency of ingredients (I’ve already discussed that), type of facility, and verification of ingredients on label. Let’s discuss them now in more depth.

Scientific Formulation

When doing a vitamin supplement comparison, the ideal supplement should be scientifically formulated yet literally almost all of the vitamin supplements on the market worldwide are not.

It’s critical that in a multivitamin with many nutrients be formed with scientific knowledge at the cellular level. Did you know that some vitamins cancel each other out and some need other minerals to do their job. For example, Vitamin D actually enhances calcium absorption in the body, and inhibits its excretion by the kidneys, yet boron is important for calcium utilization; vitamin B5 is critical to metabolizing amino acids. In addition, a good vitamin will stimulate the liver to make CoEnzymeQ10 thus avoiding the need to purchase this important but expensive ingredient, (unless the user is taking a statin drug).

Type of Facility

In the vitamin potency comparison process you may be engaged in, look for GMP certified facilities that are regularly inspected by government authorities. Do you think this irrelevant? Supplement fraud is utterly rampant – you can read about it here.

Here’s one example. As reported by Medscape 1/24/2000, “High levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been identified in five brands of shark liver oil capsules that are available internationally over-the-counter.” PCBs are toxic to the body.

In another study done by Time Magazine as reported July 31, 2000, eight of 21 vitamin brands tested we’re found to have pesticides and lead. This dovetails into my next point, verification of ingredients. Pharmaceutical GMP compliant facilities verify not only purity and potency of ingredients, but they also validate the existence of label proclaimed ingredients. Many so-called vitamin manufacturers actually don’t have the ingredients in the vitamin as stated on the label! Such fraud is commonplace, unfortunately.

Specifics About Enteric Coating

I referred to enteric coating earlier in this report but now let’s discuss it in depth. Before we discuss this, however, please don’t underestimate the importance of the delivery system. This is absolutely vital! In fact, most don’t even consider it and it is the most important aspect of the vitamin supplement outside of the formulation of the ingredients. Without a good delivery system a supplement is rendered useless. Many supplements will pass through the body with the active ingredients never being released. Other supplements will lose their efficacy when active ingredients are released in the stomach and they are converted to less potent ‘salt’ forms by the hydrochloric acid present in the stomach.

The design of good vitamin supplements uses two techniques to ensure that the active ingredients reach the liver via the blood stream for distribution to various body organs and cells. Look for a synergistic, scientifically engineered blend with all ingredients assessed at molecular level to ensure synergy, safety and effectiveness. This is crucial because when some ingredients are combined they will help create other substances in the body. For a vitamin manufacturer to enteric coat their vitamins says a lot about the quality they want to give their customers for it is expensive and sophisticated to do so.

Enteric coating is an inert substance that protects the active ingredients. It encases the active ingredients using the technology known as enteric coating – the same coating almost all pharmaceutical drugs have. This enables the active ingredients to be released in the upper intestine (the duodenum), thus avoiding damage to any of the nutrients. It binds various active ingredients with larger molecular size to selected enzymes which when released in the upper intestine break the molecules down to a smaller size to enable easy transfer of the nutrients through the intestinal wall into the blood stream and then on to the liver.

This delivery system enables the tablets to pass through your stomach undamaged by the harsh stomach acids. When your enteric-coated vitamin tablets go into the alkaline environment of the duodenum (the first part of your small intestine), the enteric coating dissolves in 20 to 30 minutes. Once that is accomplished, the active ingredients of the vitamin tablets are released over a period of 25 to 35 minutes. This happens before the tablets finish its journey through your duodenum. The end result is improved health.

So, now you can see why you should only settle for the sophisticated enteric coated delivery system. To settle for run-of-the-mill vitamins is a waste of money for you’re almost literally flushing your money down the toilet.

Conclusion

There you have it. Follow these guidelines and you will not only save money but you will get the best vitamin supplement possible. If you only remember one thing from this report, remember this: you want pharmaceutical grade quality nutrition supplements. Anything less is a waste of money and you’re being taken.

Why You Should Have An Indican Test

Why Should I Have This Test?

Dysbiosis is most likely the major contributing factor to most diseases and conditions and as such ought to be inquired in to as a possible cause in all medical conditions. Another major reason that this checkup is so important is that unless your gut is healthy you are very unlikely to absorb nutrition from your diet and nutritional supplementation. It is for this reason that the gut is treated first, otherwise it impairs our ability to maximize dietary changes and nutritional supplementation.

What Does An Indican Test Do?

When beneficial bacteria are destroyed by harmful yeasts, fungus, bacteria and viruses the process of dysbiosis and disease starts. The Urinary Indican Test is the correct and elementary checkup used to measure the putrefaction of protein in the digestive tract by unhealthy bacteria. A positive result suggests bowel toxicity because of dysbiosis.

What is Dysbiosis?

Dysbiosis is the term used to explain an imbalance of the bacteria in the digestive tract often resulting from too much yeast, harmful bacteria, viruses or parasites. Studies show that more than 70% of our immune process starts in the intestine. In the event you don’t have the right balance of bowel flora, you won’t have a healthy functioning immune process. Dysbiosis affects the immune process, hormonal balance and the important homeostatic balance of the body. This can also alter neurochemistry leading to conditions such as depression, anxiety and irritability. Dysbiosis can be linked to a whole range of medical conditions affecting every aspect of our health.

How Does Dysbiosis Cause Disease?

Dysbiosis starts when beneficial bacteria are destroyed by harmful yeasts, fungus, bacteria and viruses. This detrimental process can bring about the following:

1. Disruption with the friendly bacteria which causes yeast and fungal overgrowth

2. Putrefaction

3. Allergy and Inflammation

4. Malnutrition

5. Hepatic stress

6. Leaky Gut Syndrome

When the friendly bacteria in the intestines is killed off, this will lead to fungal overgrowth in most instances. When sugars, grains and alcohol are consumed, the intestinal tract will become a putrid and infected. This is the ideal environment for yeasts and fungus to develop and grow. Allergic reactions can occur, causing inflammation of the mucous membranes in the intestinal tract. Inflammation inhibits our body from absorbing valuable nutrients from food, and this then leads to malnutrition. When these yeast begin to line our intestinal wall, they puncture holes in the lining of our gut wall allowing wastes, food particles, bacteria and toxins to leach in to our bloodstream leading to a whole host of other health conditions.

Who Should Have This Test?

If your health is important to you, then this check is for you. This is one of our most popular tests, for obvious reasons. Naturopaths often state that health starts with a healthy gut. Because of this our investigations and treatments often begin with the gut. The Indican Test is an elementary and effective way to monitor and measure the level of unhealthy bacteria in the gut, and to follow up how effective the treatment is at decreasing the load of harmful bacteria and their detrimental effects on the body. Because of this, naturopaths usually recommend this test to all of their patients.

What Is Involved In The Test?

The Indican Test involves taking a basic urinary sample, to which your practitioner will then add some chemicals to ascertain the level of dysbiosis in the gut. Later tests may be taken to be sure that your treatment is decreasing the level of dysbiosis and that your gut function is in fact improving.

Chaste Tree – Medicinal Uses, Interactions, Side Effects, Dosage

The dried fruit or berry of the chaste tree is often referred to as Monk’s pepper or chasteberry; it was historically thought to reduce libido or promote chastity. Chaste tree is also commonly referred to as vitex.

Uses and Benefits:

Standardized extracts of the chaste tree berry are popular in Europe, and now in North America, for a variety of women’s problems primarily related to the menstrual cycle. These disorders include menstrual cycle irregularities, the premenstrual syndrome (PMS), cyclic breast pain, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and infertility. Historically, vitex has also been used for inflammatory conditions, diarrhea, flatulence, insufficient lactation, and menstruation induction.

Adverse Effects: Vitex appears to be very well tolerated. Reported side effects in the clinical studies are rare and transient (often similar in frequency to placebo), and primarily include mild gastrointestinal complaints, allergic reactions, or headaches. A single case of unexplained nocturnal seizures in a patient taking chaste tree berry, black cohosh, and evening primrose oil has been reported ; a cause-and-effect relationship with vitex is doubtful.

Side Effects and Interactions:

There are no reported interactions with vitex. Due to its potential effects on dopamine and prolactin, it is relatively contraindicated with other drugs that are dopamine antagonists (e.g., bromocriptine, metoclopramide, antiparkinson’s drugs).

Cautions:

Use during pregnancy and lactation should generally be avoided, although vitex has been employed to enhance fertility and stimulate lactation. In a case report of a woman undergoing unstimulated in vitro fertilization treatment, a combination herbal preparation containing vitex was associated with folliculogenesis and increased FSH, LH, and progesterone levels. In addition, the patient complained of symptoms suggestive of mild ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

Preparations & Doses:

Vitex preparations and doses vary considerably; only the standardized European products have been demonstrated to be effective. In the German clinical trials, small doses of standardized extract preparations are equivalent to about 30-40 mg of dried or crude herb, and are usually administered each morning. Agnolyte is marketed in the U.S. as Femaprin (Nature’s Way), and is usually given as one 4-mg tablet or 40 drops of extract per day. Herbalists in Britain and other English-speaking countries tend to use much larger doses of noncommercial preparations, equivalent to about 500-2000 mg/day of dried herb, often in liquid extracts and tinctures. A more recent European product is equivalent to about 120-240 mg of crude herb.

An Overview Of Nasal Polyps And Types Of People Who Are At Risk

Believe it or not, nasal polyps are fairly common. They are shaped much like teardrops and are non-cancerous growths that thrive in the nose and sinuses. In sinuses, they are found where the sinuses open to the nasal cavity. Matured polyps very much look like peeled, seedless grapes. The growths in the nose can be of different sizes; they can appear to be pinkish, brownish, or yellowish brown in hue. These polyps group together, and can grow to look like grapes on one stem.

Polyps may grow on one or both nostrils. They may also grow independently, or in clusters (like the grapes mentioned). Polyps growing on one side of the nose is not uncommon. When these nasal growths swell, they may pose a health risk in the form of breathing difficulty. They may also adversely affect a person’s sense of smell and taste due to the blockage. These polyps may also cause more infections than what is normal, block the sinuses and prevent them from functioning well, as well as cause other problems within the nose.

Nasal polyps appear more frequently in males than females – in fact, they appear four times as much in men than women, and often at the age of 40 and beyond. These growths must not be confused or associated with polyps that form in a person’s bladder or colon – these growths in the nose are rarely malignant. They are thought to result from a hereditary tendency or chronic inflammation. Swollen turbinates, which line our noses, are also different because these polyps are not painful to touch.

Who Can Get Nasal Polyps?

Polyps that grow in our noses affect many different people, but the risk increases to individuals who are forty and above. Rarely do they appear in children under 10. These polyps also appear in greater frequency to the following people:

– Individuals who are suffering from chronic sinusitis, or a chronic inflammation in the nasal area or passages.

– Those who have allergic conditions, particularly allergic fungal sinusitis, in which airborne fungi are the culprit to uncomfortable reactions.

– People who are sensitive to aspirin and other NSAIDs, or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, have a greater chance to develop polyps.

– Individuals who have asthma, and those who have rhinitis or hay fever are also more likely to develop nasal polyps.

– Those whose parents have had polyp growths in the nose also have a greater chance to acquire them.

– People who have cystic fibrosis and the Churg-Strauss syndrome.

Types of Fibroids

A fibroid is a tumor or an abnormal growth that is benign. It is not associated with cancer, and they almost never develop into cancer. These fibroids can grow on the uterus and or the ovaries. One half of all women will have a fibroid, however, most probably won’t know it. That’s because most of them never cause any problems or symptoms. Occasionally a doctor may stumble upon one accidentally when doing a routine pelvic exam.

The 5 different types of fibroids are classified depending on their location. They are:

Intracavity   myomas  are inside the cavity of the uterus. These may cause bleeding between periods, and painful cramping. If these fibroids are bothersome, they can be removed by a process called hysteroscopic resection. In this process, the doctor can go in through the cervix without even needing to make an incision.

Submucous  myomas  have partially grown into the cavity, and partially grown into the uteran wall. These types of fibroids can also cause pain and bleeding between menstruation. Some of these can be removed using hysteroscopic resection.

Intramural  myomas  have grown in the wall of the uterus. These fibroids can be anywhere from the size of a pea to the size of a grapefruit! Most of the time, these fibroids don’t need to have any type of treatment. It is only when they grow quite large that they may be bothersome. Most of the time, women won’t even know these are here.

Subserous  myomas  are on the outside of the uteran wall.

Pedunculated  myomas  – Occasionally a fibroid will be found that is attached to the uterus by a sort of stem or stalk. This is a pedunculated  myoma , and is the easiest fibroid to remove by laparoscopy.

Treatments:

Hysteroscopic resection is a process in which a doctor uses a tool that inserts into the cervix. This tool is attached to a camera that allows the doctor to see any type of fibroids. On this tool also is a feature that can produce high levels of electrical current to kill the tissue of the fibroid.

Hormone treatments may also be used to shrink the fibroids, if they are bothersome.

If the fibroids are really affecting you, and causing a lot of bleeding and pain, you can consider a hysterectomy. Doctors consider this a last resort treatment, and won’t normally recommend it unless it is necessary.

Speak with your doctor, and make sure he is aware of all of the symptoms you may be having. He can use this information, along with exams to determine what type of treatment is right for you!
