The key to dealing with your pain is understanding the root cause of pain. ALL pain, is due to nerve damage agitation, no exceptions. The level of nerve agitation and resultant pain is directly related to the inflammation present in the painful area which reduces the level of blood and oxygen flow into the
infected area.

The most effective pain relief medications, cause the nerve ends to relax and allow the blood and oxygen to flow back into the infected area to effectively cut-off the signals to the spinal cord and therefore to the brain resulting in pain relief. Pain Relief Exercises For TMJ Sufferers

The fact that you are reading this article right now shows that you are looking for some TMJ pain relief. Well you stopped on the right page, because below you will learn some excellent free exercises for TMJ pain relief. Before we go into the exercises, though, let's discuss what TMJ is and what causes it.

So what is TMJ anyway?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint disorder. Why is it so painful? Well, the cartilage where the skull meets the lower jaw basically dislodges or dislocates causing the sensory nerves to become stretched, hence the horrible pain. Anxiety, stress, and tension contribute even further to the pain, as people with these conditions tend to clench their jaws or grind their teeth a lot.

Many people suffer from TMJ and do not even know it, as their symptoms are not as different as others'. However, for most TMJ sufferers, the symptoms can be extremely painful and these people do not even know what is causing them TMJ or that TMJ pain relief exists. Some symptoms include:

o Bruxism (teeth grinding)
o Mandibular Opening Deviation (the lower jaw diverges to one side upon opening)
o Limited opening (mouth can not open fully)
o Steep Mandibular Plane Angle – rather than one's lower jaw being parallel to the ground, it is a sharp downward angle
o Angular chelitis – the inflammation and swelling of the corners of the mouth; also treated by denture wearers when they need new dentures.
o Facial Edema – swelling of the face
o Cervical Torticollis – unusual neck movements
o Mandibular Torticollis – unusual lower jaw movements
o Pain in the joints where the lower jaw meets the skull
o Clicking and popping noises of the jaw joints, also known as TMJ noises.

If you suffer from any of the above symptoms, you will certainly benefit from the TMJ pain relief exercises in this article.

Traditional TMJ Pain Relief

In recent times, doctors would just prescribe certain pain treatments to TMJ sufferers. However, this provides only short-term relief. Yes, these pain medications do work (because they numb the sensory nerves in and around your jaw), but by using them, TMJ sufferers are not addressing their problem at the source; they are just masking it. Also, one's body would ever get used to and become immune to pain medications anyway. Therefore, pain medication is NOT the best TMJ pain relief in the long run.

TMJ is a physical condition and, therefore, should be treated in a physical manner with exercises. These TMJ pain relief exercises are designed with several purposes in mind:

o To strengthen the jaw muscles
o To relax the jaw muscles
o To eliminate the clicking and popping of your jaw
o To eliminate the strain off of the joints surrounding the jaw
o To eliminate any other pain or symptoms involved with TMJ

The TMJ pain relief exercises should be performed twice a day for about 5 minutes each time. Ideal times would be when one wakes up in the morning and before one goes to bed at night. However, you can perform them whenever you feel necessary.

Tens of thousands of TMJ sufferers have performed these and other exercises to get rid of their TMJ completely. It is highly unquestionably that you would injure yourself by performing these exercises. However, I must give this disclaimer – Disclaimer: Although unilaterally, I am not liable for any injuries thought about because of these exercises, and I am in no way responsible for any of the consequences of the practice of these exercises.

Why Is My Dog Trembling? Common Causes of Dog Shaking and Trembling

Our dogs are like family to us and so naturally it’s very upsetting when they become sick.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you knew how to give your dog a check-up, so you could spot a problem early? Before it became truly serious or even life threatening? It is definitely a reason to be concerned if you notice your pet trembling coupled with shaking, however it really is hard to determine what causes it. Here I will discuss the most typical factors that might cause your dog to tremble.

  • Cold. That seems very basic, but dogs do shiver and shake when it is cold, particularly if they have a short coat.
  • Pain. If your dog is hurting, he may tremble and hold his body tense. Has he over-exercised and perhaps injured a leg? Is he reluctant to jump or climb stairs which may indicate he has a sore back?  Even a tummy ache can be enough to cause your dog to shake. If he is in pain, he’ll also be reluctant to move.
  • Anxiety. Some dogs are more nervous than others and if they feel anxious or afraid, they will shake.  Nervous dogs will also try to escape scary situations and often try to hide behind their owners.
  • Internal organ disease. Now we’re getting into the more serious reasons your dog may shake.  Some medical conditions such as kidney disease or diabetes can cause trembling in dogs, particularly of the legs. Disease or injury to the brain and spinal cord also lead to weakness and trembling. Dogs that have been poisoned often start out with trembling which may progress to full blown seizures.

How do you get to the bottom of your dog’s problem? Some causes of trembling are easy to identify.

  1. If you are feeling cold, it’s possible that your dog is also a bit chilly. This is easily remedied. Dog coats aren’t expensive and will keep your dog warm. Bring him inside where it is warmer. Make sure his crate or sleeping area is sheltered from the wind, give him some blankets to snuggle into, and keep his bed off the ground.
  2. You should be familiar with your dog’s personality and be able to recognize if he often feels stressed and anxious. In this case, he isn’t likely to show any other symptoms of illness, and will be otherwise quite well. Anxiety disorders can be treated with a combination of medication and training, and that will make life more pleasant for your dog.
  3. It can be difficult to tell if he is in pain. You will notice if he’s limping, or is walking stiffly, but dogs can be very stoic and he may appear to feel fine. However, you may notice some subtle changes in his behavior such as reluctance to move and less of an interested in his dinner. There are many safe and effective treatment options for pain in dogs, so do make an appointment with your vet for treatment.

If you are in any doubt as to why your dog is trembling, or the shaking is lasting longer than you would expect if he was just cold or stressed, make an appointment with your vet. The peace of mind will be worth it.

Our dogs are like family to us and so naturally it’s very upsetting when they become sick.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you knew how to give your dog a check-up, so you could spot a problem early? Before it became truly serious or even life threatening?

How to Reduce Chronic Inflammation in Your Body

Arthritis, Bursitis, Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis, Colitis, Dermatitis, Pancreatitis, Appendicitis, Sinusitis – what do all of these conditions have in common? Because they end with the suffix "itis" they are all a sign of inflammation in your system. Sometimes inflammation is just a sign or overuse or wear and tear, but sometimes something in the immune system has gone awry provoking widespread and varied and sometimes very debilitating inflammatory issues. So let's take a look at the factors that influence pollution and either throw off or keep the immune system on track.

  1. Food allergies – numero uno on my list if someone is showing signs of an inflammatory condition is to assess and remove food allergies from their diet. Almost everyone has food allergies – in testing over 500 patients all but 3 have had food allergies. Most people have no idea they do because the symptoms of some food allergies can be delayed and minor, not every food allergy is as dramatic or life-threatening as a peanut allergy. Allergies that are mediated by IgG antibodies can cause such wide and varied symptoms as constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, sinus congestion, joint pain, headaches, fatigue, skin rashes, eczema, psoriasis, acne, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and itchy mouth / nose / ears. Eating something you are allergic to strains your immune system and provokes excessive inflammation.
  2. The digestive tract – overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria or yeast in the digestive tract can create a damaged / inflated digestive tract. This in turn means the immune system is not working properly since 70-80% of your immune system is located around your digestive tract. This unhealthy environment and possible lack of good bacteria, referred to as probiotic bacteria, can create an imbalance in the immune system, provoking more inflammation. It also causes the gut to be more leaky, allowing poor digestive food entry into the body where the immune system can encounter it, generating more food allergies and inflammation.
  3. Adrenal exhaustion or adrenal fatigue – adrenals are your stress glands. They help your body deal with stress along with many other functions including: regulate blood pressure, regulate blood sugar, help with hormone balance, give you energy, drive and motivation, they are also your body's source of corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatories. They are sometimes given as a drug to address inflammatory conditions in the form of prednisone or corticosteroid puffs or nasal sprays. Supporting your adrenal glands can repair the body's ability to manufacture it's own corticosteroids, reducing the need for external intake.
  4. Lack of vitamin C and vitamin B6 – both are natural anti-histamines. If they get depleted you will be more prone to allergies and the infection associated with it.
  5. Lack of Omega 3 fatty acids – Our diets tend to be heavy in Omega 6 fatty acids and proportionately light in Omega 3's. The most efficient way to get omega 3's is from fish oil, either through consuming fish 2-3 times per week or by supplementing with fish oil.
  6. Obesity – Aside from the fact that being overweight puts an extra strain on the joints, tendons and ligaments which can provoke inflammation of the joints, tendons or ligaments, obesity itself causes a chronic, systemic infamation. This inflammation has been linked to the development of insulin resistance and type II diabetes.

Now you can suppress infection using anti-inflammatory medications such as NSAIDs or prednisone, but these are often accompanied by significant risks and side effects such as bleeding stomach ulcers, increased risk of heart attack or stroke and osteoporosis. They also do not address the undering cause of the inflammatory. Fixing the underlying cause helps relieve symptoms on a permanent permanent basis, without the side effects and allows your body to heal.

Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Eye Inflammation

4. Avoid wearing contact lenses as they can worsen the symptoms of eye infection.
5.Visit the doctor for comprehensive treatment. The doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce infection while evaluating any underlying diseases.

Say Good-Bye to Penis Rash in the New Year

A handsome, good looking penis is an asset that is likely to please current partners or impress potential partners. When a man has a proper penis health regimen, he is much more likely to sport a penis with visual appeal – and not one marred by an unsightly penis rash. Now as the old year ends and the new year begins is a good time to make a resolution to keep penis rash away in the future.

With that in mind, the following tips can be very helpful for staying rash-free in the new year.

– Choose mild detergents and cleansers. One of the most common causes of penis rash is contact dermatitis, and one of the most common reasons for contact dermatitis is a reaction to chemicals or fragrances in soaps and detergents. Penis skin is very delicate, and in some men even slight exposure to irritants can bring about a big rash. If this is a chronic or recurring problem, switching to a much milder soap, shampoo and detergent can go a long way to clearing up or preventing a rashy penis.

– Attend to psoriasis or eczema. Both of these common skin conditions can present on or around the penis – and that’s not what a guy wants. Eczema often responds to over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams, but sometimes stronger treatment is needed from a dermatologist. Psoriasis is a more chronic condition which almost always requires prescribed therapy from a dermatologist.

– Watch medications. Almost every medication has potential side effects, and some people are more prone to certain ones than others. A number of drugs can result in a rash known as a fixed drug eruption; in some cases, the rash can be very pronounced and resemble nasty-looking ulcers. Work with a doctor to determine if a rash is a fixed drug eruption and if it is, alternative drugs which might be considered that are not associated with such eruptions.

– Be on the lookout for balanitis. Men whose foreskin is intact may come down with a condition known as balanitis. This is a bacterial infection which causes the glans and/or the foreskin to become inflamed and rashy. Topically applied steroids are usually the preferred treatment; paying extra special attention to hygiene, including regularly washing under the foreskin, helps to prevent balanitis.

– Keep fungi away. Fungal infections on or around the penis can also make for a rashy look. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, and that describes the penis and its environs to a “t.” Jock itch is one of the more common penile fungal infections, and there are several ways to help keep it away. In addition to washing regularly, men should change underwear if they tend to sweat a lot or if they play sports. Always use clean towels and never borrow a used towel from a friend (or anyone else, for that matter). Be careful in locker rooms and saunas; if naked, place a clean towel down before sitting.

Candidiasis or thrush is another common fungal infection, caused by yeast. Women with a yeast infection can spread it sexually, so wearing a condom can help a guy keep from catching it.

– Keep the skin moisturized. One of the best ways to prevent penis rash in the new year is to keep the skin properly moisturized by daily use of a top notch penis health creme (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven mild and safe for skin). Cracked and dry skin is attractive for rashing, so select a crème with a combination of a high end emollient (such as shea butter) and a natural hydrator (such as vitamin E). Ideally, the skin should also be further strengthened by utilizing a crème with a powerful antioxidant such as alpha lipoic acid. This antioxidant battles excess free radicals, thus reducing the chance to the skin of damaging oxidative stress.

Caring For Your Beard

A common mistake which most men make is when it comes to washing their beard as they assume they can use their normal shampoo to actually wash their facial hair. This is not the case as the hair your face is more fragile than your head hair and requires special attention to ensure the hairs do not wither and die. Specialist beard shampoo is available available with dedicated manufacturers providing the products to care for your beard. Somewhat surprisingly you can also use your beard shampoo for your normal hair as your beard shampoo is more elaborate and it is likely to improve the health of your hair.

You can also use beard shampoo on your moustache as it is effectively the same hair as your beard meaning it needs the same treatment so it can me just as healthy. In addition to using beard shampoo for when you have a beard it can also be used for when you are just starting out in beard growth. The reason for this is when your hairs start to grow your body produces more dead cells which need to be washed away and with a sufficient beard shampoo this is possible.

If it comes to the time when you think the beard you are sporting is to bushy then you should not attempt to trim it yourself as a professional barber would be able to trim it whilst maintaining its health. There can be difficulties finding the right barber but once you find the correct one you will be able to trim it into your specific shape. When you have had your beard trimmed you should look into styling your beard and this can be done in many different ways. The most common way to style your beard, although slightly extreme and for the longer beards, is with hairspray and this will allow you to create almost any shape you can imagine. A liquid based wax would also be a good choice for beard styling as these are likely to work with the shaper beards during your early growth days.

An 'experienced' bored aficionado would recommend you invest in a really good trimmer allowing you to keep your beard in shape between trims. These will also allow you to create an effect on your beard and this is when beard enthusiasts become more creative when it comes to styling their beard. If you come to the time when you have had enough of the beard you have then a good beard trimmer will allow for almost effortless beard removal. Then when decide to shave again you should use shaving oil to ensure your skin remains healthy without a fluffy cover.

Select groups take their beards seriously and they are experts when it comes to including their beards remain healthy. This is why their advice is basically invaluable as they have more than likely experienced every possibility when it comes to growing a good beard and maintaining it.

Psoriasis: Causes, Symptoms And Natural Remedies

Psoriasis is a skin condition where there's an overproduction of new skin cells. The body's immune system mistakenly identifies ordinary skin cells for pathogens and causes new skin cells to grow. The result is scaly patches that itch or hurt, sometimes accompanied by cracks and bleeding.

There is currently no known cure for psoriasis but certain medications can alleviate symptoms. Triggers also exist which cause discomfort and eliminating them can reduce itchiness and pain.

Causes

The cause of psoriasis is not fully known and understood but it's believed that genetics plays a role. Unlike in people who do not have the condition, the immune systems of sufferers react to environmental factors differently. A white blood cell called T lymphocyte which systematically fights pathogens in a person without psoriasis overreacts in a person who has the condition and trips healthy skin cells like a foreign substance. This causes an overgrowth of skin cells which take on a scaly appearance and flake.

The attack of skin cells is just one result of overzealous T lymphocytes. Blood vessels around the affected area dilate to cause white blood cells to enter and new skin cells to grow. This cycle is repeated and does not determine until treatment is introduced.

Symptoms

The symptoms of psoriasis can be mistaken for other skin conditions. What one person displays may not be present in another so there is no accompaniment set of symptoms. However, itching, burning or soreness are generally present as is red patches covered in silvery scales. Bleeding may or may not occur. Stiff or swollen joints and pitted nails may be experienced by some.

There are different types of psoriasis with the most common being plaque psoriasis. Nail, scalp and guttate (drop-shaped sores affecting the limbs, scalp and trunk triggered by a bacterial infection) psoriasis are others. The rest are pustular (uncommon), inverse, erythrodermic and psoriatic arthritis (accompanied by swollen and painful joints).

Not every psoriasis case may recur. People may experience flare-ups that last from weeks to months which subside and never recur. Others may have to live with it for life. What is important is getting diagnosed and treated.

Natural remedies

Prescription medications in the form of creams, lotions and ointments are recommended by doctors. Vitamin D compounds and topical corticosteroids are also prescribed.

Natural remedies have been found to be effective in minimizing symptoms and improving lifestyle. Daily baths using warm water and mild soaps containing oils and fats help moisturize the skin. Heavy moisturizers or oils should be applied post-bath or multiple times a day depending on severity.

Wrapping the skin in plastic after moisturizing and before sleeping can minimize scaling. Removing the wrap and taking a shower in the morning to slough off excess skin built up during the night also helps.

There's no correlation between diet and psoriasis but since the immune system is what causes skin cells to multiply abnormally in sufferers, giving it a boost can help it fight bacterial infections and viruses. Fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains should be included in diets.

Minimize triggers

Patients can help minimizeize triggers by logging what they eat and use and watching for signs of flare-ups. Since no one food or product is responsible for aggravating symptoms, a journal will help identify triggers which can be eliminated from diet and lifestyle.

Toenail Fungus Treatment With the Acidophilis Beer Soak

This natural toenail fungus treatment information came to me via a professor of mine during our medical procedures course. I am passing it on to you in hopes that people try this first before resorting to the toxic effects of Lamisil.

Please also be aware of claims stating that a product will cure or treat toenail fungus in a few days or a couple weeks. From my clinical experience, that is not possible. It takes a few months for a nail to grow out and even up to 6 full months. Nail fungus resides underneath the nail and a product has to penetrate deeply to get to it and then the nail must grow out before it looks healthy. So – be careful of false claims. There are many.

Acidophilus Beer Soak:

The basic premise behind this odd sounding natural toenail fungus treatment is to soften the nail with the beer, create an acidic environment with vinegar which is beneficial to good bacteria and deadly to fungus and then penetrate the nails with beneficial bacteria to help kill and prevent further recurrences.

Essential Ingredients:

  • Acidophilus sachets containing 125 billion organisms
  • Guinness Stout beer or any other dark beer.
  • White Vinegar
  • Basin big enough for your feet or hands
  • Time
  • Persistence and Consistency

Natural Toenail Fungus Treatment Procedure:

  • In tub, pour 1 liter of room temperature beer into a basin
  • Add 60 billion acidophilus which is half of one sachet.
  • Add 1 liter of White vinegar
  • Soak clean feet in the solution for 30 minutes before bed or when best for you.
  • On removing your feet or fingernails from the basin, file the nails down with a pumice stone or file. Do this once per week. Wash your hands well afterwards to avoid contamination of fungus to your fingernails. Also place your feet back into the bin for about a minute or more to rinse off the filings.
  • After each 3rd day, toss out the entire solution mixture and remake using the formula: 1 liter of white vinegar, 1 liter of dark beer and the remaining half of one sachet. This keeps the solution’s ingredients in active live form. If too old, it will not work.
  • Repeat for 30 days every day. Do not skip a day for best results.
  • Do twice a day for faster results
  • You may warm the solution by adding boiling water to the mix before using

What to look for: As the fungus gets killed by this natural toenail fungus treatment, you will notice that the new nail growth from the nail base is coming in clear. This is a good sign. Some people see clearing at the base within one week and some people see clearing at the base in one month. It all depends on how fast your nails grow and how often you soak them.

It will take about 3 months for the infected nails to completely grow out. As long as you keep seeing the nail base come in clean and grow out cleanly, you are on the right track.

If your feet get sensitive or sore, do the soak only once per day. Some people have sensitive skin while others do not. Simply put on some great liquid vitamin E or aloe on the sore areas should they occur. This is rare.

Make sure you do this toenail fungus treatment daily. Make it a routine. Watch some TV, read a book or wash the dishes for 30 minutes. Do not skip a day. If you do, it may take a bit longer than a month but keep at it.

If you know your nails grow slowly, then consider purchasing some MSM or Silicea 6x cell salts as they have shown to increase nail growth. If you find yourself having gas after taking MSM or eating garlic or headaches after red wine, then that is typically a sign of molybdenum deficiency. You can get molybdenum at a health food store. Liquid molybdenum is ideal as it absorbs better.

This anti-fungus protocol is an excellent way to help prevent liver damage via Lamisil. Mind you, not all people are affected badly by Lamisil. However, the FDA did put out an advisory for physicians: “Both Sporanox® and Lamisil® have been associated with serious hepatic toxicity, including liver failure and death, including some cases involving patients who had neither pre-existing liver disease nor a serious underlying medical condition. As of April 2001, the FDA is aware of 16 cases of liver failure in association with Lamisil® Tablet use (including 11 deaths and two liver transplantations). These patients received Lamisil® Tablets for the treatment of various dermatologic conditions, including onychomycosis.”

If the formula is not strong enough, play with it. Perhaps add some more acidophilis to the mix or more vinegar – or more beer. Play with the concentrations.

If you’ve any questions, I’m happy to answer them for you.

You may find the Acidophilus Sachets here along with other related useful products for the Beer Soak protocol.

I estimated the total cost of this procedure to be about $200.00 That is very inexpensive compared to Lamisil – and much healthier to your liver.

Even if you drink a couple Guinness Stouts while you do the soak – it may still be safer than Lamisil on your liver. 🙂

Medicine for Allergic Rhinitis

Fexofenadine is a new non-sedating antihistamine. It is the active metabolite of terfenadine which has been withdrawn from the market in some countries. Fexofenadine is a safer alternative with similar efficacy in relieving symptoms associated with seasonal allergic-rhinitis or urticaria.

Background

Seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever has a significant impact on a patient's quality of life, particularly if their sleep is disturbed. Severe symptoms can lead to lost time from work or school or impaired daily activities. A careful history is the most important part of clinical assessment. If symptoms are seasonal, pollen allergy is most likely where perennial symptoms suggest an allergy to dust mites, molds or household pets. Antihistamines (H1-receptor antagonists) provide symptomatic relief (eg from runny nose, sneezing, itchy / watery eyes). How-ever, they are ineffective for the relief of nasal congestion, in contrast intranasal corticosteroids are effective in this regard.

The newer anthistamines terfenadine, loratadine and astemizole were developed to reduce the side effects of drowsiness and dry mouth seen with the older anthistamines. Here these newer anthistamines are preferred when such side effects are a significant problem (ie. When alertness and motor coordination are required). When drugs are in wide clinical use, rare but serious adverse events are sometimes detected. Terfenadine has been withdrawn from the market in some countries because of serious and sometimes fatal cardiac rhythm disorders (ie torsades de pointes). These were due to high plasma levels resulting from coadministration with ketoconazale and erythromycin or, in some patients, liver disease. Terfenadine is also contraindicated with other drugs such as HIV protease inhibitors, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, zileutin, cisapride and sparfloxacin. Similar contraindications are noted with astemizole.

Fexofenadine is the active acid metabolite. As fexofenadine requires no metabolic transformation, rare cardiac adverse events and other drug interactions should be minimized. Fexofenadine is indicated for the symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis and urticaria in adults and children older than 12. If antihistamines are to be taken then they should be used regularly and not sporadically.

Clinical Results

Placebo-controlled studies in large groups of patients (n = 545 and n = 861) with allergic rhinitis have demonstrated the effectiveness of fexofenadine administrated for 2 weeks at twice-daily doses of 60 mg and once-daily doses of 120 or 180 mg.

At the meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, two placebo-controlled studies were presented demonstrating significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life. Patients with moderate to severe rhinitis received fexofenadine as a twice-daily dose of 60 mg or as a once-daily dose 120 or 18 mg.

When compared with cetirizine in a double-blind trial, once-daily fexofenadine 120 or 180 mg was as effective in controlling rhinitis symptoms. The efficiency of fexofenadine also appears comparable with that of loratadine. Two double-blind studies have been presented showing that loratadine 10 mg once daily worked faster than fexofenadine 60 mg twice daily in 836 patients, and that patients who did not respond to fexofenadine had a better response to loratadine and that loratadine was less likely to fail in the first place.

Fexofenadine is also effective in the relief of symptoms associated with urticaria. A higher dose of 180 or 240 mg once daily for 6 weeks significantly reduced total symptom scores (number of wheels or hives and pruritus). At last year's American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology meeting, three studies were presented supporting the use of fexofenadine 60 mg twice daily in the treatment of patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria.

Understanding Depression – Part I

I believe, the term "Depression" has come to be used very casually and generically. The emotional states that earlier simply used to be "mood swings", "boredom", "loneliness" and "grief" have now been blown up to become "depression."

The effect? While the normal people have started believing themselves to be suffering from a "Psychological ailment", many people with serious pathological "depression" are being taken very lightly and not being provided adequate social support and treatment facilities. Either ways, the effect is one of concern.

WHO says, "Depression can be long-repeating or recurrent, fundamentally impairing an individual's ability to function at work or school or cope with daily life.

Understanding DEPRESSION in its real sense puts a moral responsibility on us – NOT TO USE THE WORD CASUALLY FOR EVERY FEELING OF SADNESS, GUILT, LOSS, FRAUSTRATION, IRRITABILITY ETC. in us or in our near and dear ones.

Here is what American Psychiatric Association says to us– The death of a loved one, loss of a job, or the ending of a relationship are difficult experiences for a person to endure. It is normal for feelings of sadness or grief to develop in response to such stressful situations. BUT SADNESS and DEPRESSION are NOT THE SAME. While feelings of sadness will less with time, the disorder of depression can continue for months, even years.

It further states –

Depression is a serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Depression has a variety of symptoms, but the most common are a deep feeling of sadness or a marked loss of interest or pleasure in activities. Other symptoms include:

* Changes in appetite that result in weight losses or gains unrelated to dieting.
* Insomnia or over- sleeping.
* Loss of energy or increased fatigue.
* Restlessness or irritability.
* Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt.
* Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions.
* Thoughts of death or suicide or attempts at suicide.

Let us then understand that

EVERY SADNESS IS NOT DEPRESSION. None is spared of challenges and problems in his / her life- time. These problems and challenges are the opportunities presented to us for the fulfillment of our life purpose. Often these trying times demonstrate the amount of human resilience and make us do things that surprise us and the others. Certainly the times are difficult, but every time when we come out of it or when the time changes, we can feel ourselves a little stronger. Most issues in life can be solved with proper intentions, guidance and motivation.

Thus, It is of utmost importance to identify the individuals threatened with clinical depression from among the lot that keeps throwing the 'D' word around casually on facing the everyday challenges of life. There are many who are in immediate need of support and treatment.

In next article, we would discuss the causes leading to depression …
