The parathyroid glands are four glands located in the neck behind the thyroid gland. These glands are responsible for producing parathyroid hormone (PTH), which helps regulate calcium levels in the bloodstream. When calcium levels in the blood is low, the parathyroid glands sense this and produce PTH. Normally, levels of PTH in the blood stream is between 10-65 picograms per milliliter (pg/mL). PHT then acts on the bones to release calcium and phosphorus. PTH also acts on the kidneys to decrease the excretion of calcium, increase the production of Vitamin D and increase calcium absorption from the gut.

The normal calcium level in a person’s blood stream ranges from 8.5-10.2 mg/dL. When the calcium level is at the high range, normal parathyroids stop producing PTH; when the calcium level is in the low range, normal parathyroids produce PTH in proportion to the amount of calcium that is required by the body.

When the body’s calcium metabolism and parathyroids are in balance, there is an even amount of bone breakdown and bone building so that the calcium storage in our body remains even and your bones remain dense and strong. When there is too much PTH produced, it results in a condition called hyperparathyroidism, which may lead to thinning of the bones, kidney stones, abdominal discomfort and general anxiety.

Parathyroid Glands and PTH

There is a narrow range of calcium required for the nervous and muscular systems to function properly. When blood calcium levels drop below a certain level, receptors in the parathyroid gland release the parathyroid hormone (PTH). This hormone increases blood calcium levels by stimulating osteoclasts to release calcium by breaking down bone.

When one or more of the parathyroid glands produce too much PTH, the excess hormone removes calcium from the bones and adds it to your blood. This bone calcium loss is why anyone with a bad parathyroid gland eventually develops osteoporosis.

Even when unions were arrogant over twenty years ago, the average non union worker was better off. The private sector production workers are now just a small part of the total union population.

The Teamsters and service workers’ withdrawal from the AFL-CIO is truly a historical happening. The United States has gone through the most massive dislocation of jobs in history, while workers were told it was a good thing. Our federal government seeded the moving of factories outside this country starting in 1956, while the AFL-CIO kept supporting people like President Bill Clinton and Sen. John Kerry, who led the way in passing of the unfair NAFTA and GATT trade agreement that betrayed workers. The American Workers won World War 2 but over fifty years later the American Workers have lost it with millions of workers losing their jobs.

Finally the story is being told. While the AFL-CIO was considered to be the union of Steel-workers and other production workers, the membership of these groups dwindled to only 15 percent of the total union population, with the public-sector workers making up close to 50 percent.

Public workers never should have been part of the AFL-CIO. They are paid my the taxpayers. The taxpayers are their employer.

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney came from the service and retail unions and was never in sync with the production workers. He led the way in making contribution to politicians, tools of change that never worked. He was in denial about millions losing their jobs due to Free Trade and Globalization. This is only conjecture but one has to wonder why he supported those who led the way for Free Trade which devastated the union membership in the USA.

Children also become frightened easily and if we as adults are not able to make them feel more comfortable in the medical care environment, then their care can potentially become more challenging and even difficult. If children become more comfortable and able to accept the medical care we offer them, then they would be willing to cooperate more and our care for them becomes easier and their experience less traumatic. We need to do this in a very realistic, non threatening, and reasonable means that is age appropriate for the child. If you have a choice of taking your child to a specialist or a medical center that specializes in the care of children, then take advantage of this option. The more experienced a specialist or a center is with caring for children, more likely it is that the care will be customized for the needs of your child.

Occasionally there are many steps between a pediatrician’s office and the actual surgery. There may be need for many tests, or consultations with healthcare professionals. A parent’s role becomes crucial in maintaining appointments and sometimes coordinating information and services if care can encompass different sites for lab work, radiographic work ups( X-rays) and medical specialist consultations. Unless all of these services are performed under one roof, on occasion a parent may need to cart information, test results and consultation reports. In this day and age of electronics, it is less common for this scenario, but in certain regions of this country we still rely on paper to disperse and provide information. It may come to rest on a parent’s shoulders the facilitation, and cooperation of information and care coordination between different medical specialists.

Once the surgical specialist has been consulted with and need for surgery is determined, then the preparation for surgery will begin. As healthcare providers we try not to subject children unnecessarily to tests. Certain surgical procedures may require to obtain blood levels if there is potential for blood loss, or blood chemistry levels if the surgery, medication administered or fluids provided intravenously during care impact these levels during or after surgery.

You will be given a package that will help with the registration process at the medical center. These packets can vary in content from being very simple in just obtaining medical information for the hospital, to pre surgical visit with a nurse or an anesthesiologist at the hospital, to an orientation tour of the medical center. Each surgical center is different in how they approach to the registration process. It would be beneficial for you and your child to familiarize yourself with the policies of the surgical center, even if you need to call and speak to an individual to clarify policy, hospital procedure in registration, or care, or to speak to an anesthesia care provider about the anesthetic implications of care for your child. If you are not scheduled to meet with the anesthesia care provider, it may be wise to call or meet in advance to obtain an understanding of what is expected. Whether your child will be pre-medicated prior to surgery, or if a parent is allowed to accompany a child to the operating room or an induction suite where the child would drift off to sleep. An anesthesiologist may be able to provide information that will help make the care of the child less stressful, and help reduce your anxiety.

You will also receive instructions for medications if your child needs them prior to surgery and dietary restrictions. Dietary restrictions can vary depending on the type of procedure. It is standard that a child be restricted from food and any pulp containing or non clear fluids for more than 6 to 8 hours. Most medical centers allow the consumption of water 2 to 4 hours prior to surgery. Please check with your surgeon and anesthesiologist regarding this restriction. Surgeons and anesthesiologists become very upset if this restriction is violated because it endangers the life of the child. Retained stomach contents can easily slip into the windpipe and create a life threatening complication.

On the day of the surgery provide yourself plenty of time to reach the surgical center. Should you be delayed, please call ahead so that the surgical center can make arrangements for your arrival and prevent additional delay or cancelation. Always bring with you extra change of clothes and towels. On occasion the surgery or the anesthesia may not agree with the child and he or she may become ill on the ride home if they are having outpatient surgery. After the registration, the child will be taken to the waiting area if he or she is having outpatient surgery. The child will change into a provided gown. If the anesthesiologist has requested pre-surgery medication, then the nurse may provide this at this time. It may make the child groggy, sleepy and sometimes silly. This helps with the cooperation. In some surgical centers one parent may be allowed to go to the operating room with the child. It is very important to follow all instructions, and to help maintain the integrity of the sterile environment of the surgical center. Once the child has began to drift off to sleep, you will be asked to step into the waiting area.

When the surgery is complete, the surgeon may meet with you to inform you how the surgery went and on occasion provide you with some instructions. In the recovery room the child may cry, this may not be due solely to pain. Children are often disoriented or frightened upon emergence from anesthesia. The children are medicated in the PACU with pain medication to help lessen the discomfort from pain when appropriate. If the child is an ambulatory patient, then he or she will be discharged with instructions once criteria for this discharge are met. The recovery varies from surgery to surgery and at times from child to child. If the child is discharged home it is important to provide the child with a safe environment with very little stimulation to help them rest. Children are often disoriented and their judgment impacted with anesthesia and pain medication. It is important to reduce the likelihood of the disruption of the wound and bleeding. You will be provided with instructions to watch for excess bleeding, swelling and even signs of infection over the next few days. If instructions are not clear do not hesitate to contact the surgeon or the hospital. If pain medications are provided, then it is important to follow all guidelines provide to you by your surgeon. The surgical process is very stressful any child and parent, but with the proper information the process can be a bit smoother both for parents and child.

Herpes Zoster Treatment

Herpes zoster, also called shingles, is something that anyone can get if they have had chickenpox in the past. If untreated it can last for up to a couple of weeks, however it is not recommended. Treatment is primarily necessary due to the discomfort and pain the condition causes and few people can endure it for too long. Also, as it is so painful it can cause long-term conditions like postherpetic neuralgia as well as numerous other neurological conditions. Herpes zoster treatment is rather simple and does not require more than taking medication and if necessary applying creams. It is described as a strip of clusters on one side of the body, which can be very painful and irritating. It usually begins with simple burning or pain in the skin and muscles which is followed by flu like symptoms as well as the blister like rash along the body. It can appear any place on the body, however, is usually located near the spine and on one side of the body. There are cases that it has been found on the face, arms, and legs.

Sore Throat Medicine

I think the best  sore   throat  medicine is tea. Tea comes in a variety of flavors and it help your  sore   throat  a great deal if you drink it often. Every time I would get a  throat  that is  sore , especially during the winter months, I would drink some tea and, within a couple of days, it would feel better. I know how much of a burden a  sore   throat  can be because it’s difficult to swallow so that makes it harder to eat foods.

If you don’t like tea there are many different substitutes for it that are effective for  sore   throats . You can try an apple cider vinegar gargle. Mix it with warm water and there you go. After you gargle the apple cider vinegar use a warm compress and place it on your throat. If you don’t know where or how to find apple cider vinegar try a lemon gargle. Lemon is also easier to find and most people keep some of it in their homes. When I didn’t have any tea I used the lemon gargle instead and it did help relieve some of the discomfort.

When I had a  sore   throat  as a kid my mom would give me tea to drink and that is why I drink tea on occasion even when I don’t have a  sore   throat . Sometimes the old traditional methods and cure for ailments are the best and they are passed down from generation to generation. When my kids get a  sore   throat  their  sore   throat  medicine will be plenty of tea.

Is Fasting Safe and What Kind of Fast Should I Do

Nobody has ever died as a result of a few weeks of intentional fasting. If it makes things better in your home, call it a liquid diet. If you talk to anybody about fasting, most people will think you have totally lost it. Don’t listen to them. Get educated! Before fasting you should have a thorough understanding of all the steps involved and you should become acquainted with a practiced practitioner who knows what they are doing (and has done a fast of the duration you would like to do) that you can call to ask any questions if necessary.

After juice fasting, you should feel stronger and more revitalized, your health will improve, your physical and mental working capacity will increase and you will look younger than before you started the fast.

Fasting is the oldest therapeutic method known to man.

Fasting was used by Galen, Plato and Socrates to “attain mental and physical efficiency.” Pythagoras fasted for up to 40 days at a time. Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, prescribed fasting to his patients. And the great physician, Paracelsus, said, “Fasting is the greatest remedy.”

Swedish Fast Marches led in the 1950’s and 60’s, by Dr. Lennart Edren proved to the world the safety of fasting. Participants of these fasts marched 325 miles–that’s 33 miles/day–for ten whole days without solid food! And their health improved. As a matter of fact, participants had more energy AFTER the fast than before.

It was observed that serum albumin levels remained constant, as did blood sugar levels, even though no protein was consumed over the course of the 10-day march. Body protein is in a dynamic state of breaking down (catabolism) and building up (anabolism). When old or diseased cells decompose, the amino acids are simply recycled to build young, healthy cells.

One doctor, Otto Buchinger, Jr., has supervised over 90,000 successful fasts. Russian doctors have found that fasting is the most effective treatment for schizophrenia–64% of the patients improved mentally after 20-30 days of controlled fasting.

Edgar Cayce, the Sleeping Prophet, believed that fasting was of the mind and involved a setting aside of self in order to become a clearer channel for creative and spiritual energies. He recommended fasting for poor diet, poor assimilations, poor eliminations and incoordination between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal nervous systems, imbalances or toxins in the circulatory system, improper acid-alkaline balance, glandular malfunctions and general congestion of the body.

A 54-year old Scottish woman juice fasted for 249 days. Not only did she not harm herself, but she lost 74 pounds and got rid of her arthritic pain.

Fasting extends your life. One experiment done on rats showed that limiting them from overeating and systematically starving them increased their lifespan 2 ½ times! Proponents of fasting declare that aging is not commensurate with calendar years, but rather with the health of the cells. During fasting, the concentration of toxins removed from the body and appearing in the urine can increase ten-fold.

Fitness suffers more from the myths about it than does possibly any other health-care concern. Here we will list common myths and present the facts that dispel them.

Myth: The Food Pyramid is for everyone.

Fact: For many people, six to seven servings of grains, breads, and cereals are too much. It can cause bloat, fat, and ill health. Notice this book did not promote following the Food Pyramid.

Myth: There is one perfect diet that will work for everyone.

Fact: Biochemistry varies so greatly from individual to individual that this is just not true. The Family Fit Program doesn’t offer a rigid diet plan but an approach that can be tailored to the individual needs of families.

Myth: The biggest cost of obesity in the United States is emotional, our self-esteem and self-image.

Fact: Over 300,000 deaths each year in the United States can be linked to obesity. Over $117 billion each year is drained from the U.S. economy because of obesity.

Myth: Stress does not make you fat.

Fact: The hormone released under stress-cortisol-leads to carbohydrate craving and overeating. By the way, stressed is desserts spelled backward!

Myth: All metabolisms are alike.

Fact: Everyone’s metabolism is different because each human body is unique. Family members will not have metabolisms that are exactly the same. Even twins do not have identical metabolisms.

Myth: A balanced diet provides everything you need to stay healthy.

Fact: For reasonable health this may be close to the truth, but for optimal health this is not possible. You can eat a balanced diet and still not get all the nutrients your body craves. Trace minerals such as zinc, magnesium, and cobalt are good examples of such nutrients.

Myth: Sugar makes kids hyperactive.

Fact: A correlation between sugar and hyperactivity has never been shown. Hyperactivity, like eating disorders, is a multidetermined developmental disorder. It is believed that hyperactivity, now known as attention deficit hyperactive disorder or ADHD, is caused by the absence of brain biochemicals, which causes an inability to focus and concentrate.

Myth: Kids need meat for healthy growth.

Fact: Kids need protein, but meat is not the only source of protein. Many vegetables have large concentrations of protein. Soy products are very high in protein. Fish is also high in protein.

Myth: Celery is a negative-calorie food.

Fact: No food reduces calories. There are some foods that have no calories. Celery is a very low calorie food.

Myth: Brown eggs are better than white eggs.

Fact: Unless clearly labeled as low-cholesterol or low-fat eggs, which are very recent arrivals on the marketplace, there is no difference between these types of eggs. The color has no extra health benefits.

Myth: Vitamins and other supplements are food replacements.

Fact: Vitamins and supplements are intended to boost the health benefits of our foods; they are not to be used as food replacements. Supplements cannot and do not provide dietary fiber, which is essential to digestive tract function, and other essential building blocks that the body needs. Pills do not substitute for food.

Myth: Croissants eaten plain are a healthy breakfast.

Fact: Croissants contain twelve times the fat and 50 percent more calories than an English muffin or plain toast. Always read the nutritional labels on breads, as they are not all alike.

Myth: Sea salt is better for you than ‘regular table’ salt.

Fact: Sea salt does not have any more nutritional value than regular salt. It just tastes different.

Myth: Chinese food leaves you hungry in an hour.

Fact: There is no scientific proof of this. Many Chinese dishes are heavily laden with rice and steamed vegetables and are low in protein, so you may feel hungry because you have a protein deficit by the time you digest that meal.

Myth: Eating late at night makes you fatter.

Fact: Families love to debate this issue, but the fact is that the time of day you eat does not have an effect on gaining weight. Weight gain still boils down to how many calories you eat in the course of the whole day. It is true that you burn fewer calories at night because your BMR slows when you are resting or sleeping.

Myth: Fresh fruits and vegetables are healthier for you than canned or frozen ones.

Fact: With modern freezing and canning procedures this is simply not true. In fact, frozen fruits and vegetables are typically picked at the peak of ripeness and then immediately canned or frozen, so these choices may have more consistent nutritional value than those you pick fresh at the grocer.

Myth: Fatty foods fill you up.

Fact: Fiber is more important in filling you up than fat. Fat does contain a higher percentage of calories than either carbohydrates or proteins, but the degree of fiber in all three categories of food varies.

Myth: You need to drink eight 8oz glasses of water every day to maintain good health. The 8 x 8 myth.

Fact: 5-6 glasses of water are sufficient and we can consume that water from a variety of sources, such as soft drinks, milk, coffee, tea, etc. But, the body does lose more water during vigorous activity through sweating, so be mindful to drink more during and after vigorous exercise. Water consumption during activity also helps keep the body temperature regulated.

Myth: You have to eat perfectly in order to lose weight.

Fact: There is no such thing as perfect eating. If perfect eating implies denial or sacrifice, then this is not true.You can have fun with food and lose weight.

Myth: If left alone without any outside influences, a child will eat only what he needs and will not overeat.

Fact: The tendency to overeat is instinctual. Children will eat motivated by instant gratification and not necessarily based on the physiological signal that they are full. Children are more governed by instant gratification than adults, so one could argue that they have a greater tendency to overeat.

Myth: Children do not have to worry about counting calories.

Fact: Children should watch calories just as much as adults should. The percentage of overweight children is skyrocketing. Children should be raised in an environment that teaches them to maintain a proper weight by watching what they eat.

Myth: Nuts are terrible foods that ruin diets.

Fact: Nuts are rich in unsaturated fats, not saturated fats. Eat small quantities because nuts are high in calories, and try to stick with the unsalted variety. Eating nuts can ruin diets because they are often eaten to excess, adding extra calories to the day’s total.

Myth: If you eat a lot of salt, it automatically raises your blood pressure.

Fact: Although large quantities of salt are not good for you for a variety of reasons, high blood pressure is not one of them, says the latest medical research, unless you are salt sensitive.

Myth: Tea and coffee are the same for you healthwise.

Fact: Tea has less caffeine than coffee, and tea is a good antioxidant. Tea also reduces plaque in arteries. Tea does not promote bone loss. For all of these reasons, tea is a better health alternative than coffee.

Myth: Coffee needs to be eliminated from a healthy lifestyle.

Fact: The latest findings show that coffee in moderation is not bad for your health. The notion that coffee causes heart disease, stomach ulcers, and cancer has never been proven by research, and coffee is one of the most studied beverages.

Myth: Obese people do not burn calories as efficiently as thin people.

Fact: Studies show that the difference in calories burned by thin and obese individuals is very small and that any difference between the two is probably attributable to the extra weight an obese person carries around.

Myth: Strength training will stunt a child’s growth.

Fact: Strength training will not slow or stunt a child’s growth. It will help muscles grow strong as it is intended to do. The warning about strength training is about injury rather than slowing growth.

Myth: Artificial sweeteners cause cancer because of the phenylalanine they contain. The warning labels on diet drinks say so.

Fact: Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that the body needs; it is also a component of the sweetener aspartame. Most people do not need to worry about this, but those who suffer from a metabolic disorder called PKU cannot process phenylalanine, and it will rise to toxic levels in the body. This is true for about one in fifteen thousand people.

Myth: If you drink a diet soda with a candy bar, the calories in the candy bar are cancelled out by the diet soda.

Fact: No drink or food can cancel out the calories in another food.

Myth: Colon cleansing washes out poisons from the body.

Fact: Colon cleansing has no known medical value and it can damage the rectum or bowel. The bowel is not dirty and our bodies do a fine job of cleansing itself. But, eating rich or spicy foods can lead to a feeling of bloating and gas and this condition can be helped by the same procedures advocated in colon cleansing. But, drinking lots of water can help with this as well.
