Taking the absolute value the sum of both the areas is 15 + 10 which is equal to 25. This readily tallies with the analytical expression for area of the triangle which evaluates to 25 sq units.

Let us derive the expression for circumference of a circle. If one considers a small sector of area d(theta). The area of the sector would be r * sin(d(theta)). This can be approximated to r* d(theta) for small values of d(theta). If one integrates this expression between 0 and 2 * pi, this works out to be 2 * pi * r. This expression amounts to the well known expression for circumference of a circle.

Similarly let us proceed to evaluate the expression for Area of circle. Let us compute the length of the arc enclosed by a small angle (theta). Circumference is nothing but r * d(theta). Area of the sector can be approximated to the area of a triangle as 0.5 * r * r * * d(theta). A sort of coughing retch which produces either nothing much or a sausage shape is probably caused by a fur ball. On close inspection, the sausage shape may prove to be the fur ball, so you needn’t worry further. If the fur ball hasn’t appeared then try treating your cat with kitty malt or fur ball treats but if the symptoms continue, take the cat to the vet. If it is a seriously large fur ball which won’t pass one way or the other, he may treat the cat with liquid paraffin which, while unpleasant, is very effective.

If you have any reason to believe that your can has eaten something poisonous which can range from actual poison put down by neighbours for rats, some plant seeds or drugs intended for humans, then go straight to the vet. Don’t delay as the longer the poison has to invade the cat’s system, the more likely it is to be fatal.

If your cat  vomits  frequently or displays other symptoms such as diarrhoea, weight loss or lethargy, then go to the vet. If you can take a sample or the  vomit  and/or faeces, it will be helpful as the vet can get it analysed. Refrigerate

Always refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours.

Refrigerate within 1 hour when the temperature is above 90F.

At home, place meat, poultry, and seafood in the refrigerator immediately.

Freeze poultry and ground meat that won’t be used in 1 or 2 days; freeze other meat within 4 to 5 days.

Defrost Safely

Completely defrost meat and poultry before grilling so it cooks more evenly.

Use the refrigerator for slow, safe thawing or thaw sealed packages in cold water.

You can microwave to defrost if the food will be placed immediately on the grill.

Safe Food Preparation

To prevent food borne illness, don’t use the same platter and utensils for raw and cooked meat and poultry. Harmful bacteria present in raw meat and poultry and their juices can contaminate safely cooked food.

Only use knives and cutting utensils for one thing, either for meat or for vegetables. Thereafter, the utensils should be thoroughly washed.

NEVER place the grilled meat back on the dish or board on which the raw meat was placed, as this has blood and juices from the raw meat.

NEVER use knives or dishes that have been used for the raw meat for the grilled meat, too.

Ground meat, because of the grinding process is typically more exposed to harmful pathogens. Hamburgers made of ground beef should reach 160ºF. Color is not a reliable indicator that ground beef patties have been cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria such as E. coli O157:H7. Eating a pink or red ground beef patty without first verifying that the safe temperature of 160ºF has been reached is a significant risk factor for food borne illness. When a ground beef patty is cooked to 160ºF throughout, it can be safe and juicy, regardless of color.

Beef, veal, and lamb steaks, roasts and chops can be cooked to 145ºF.

Keep Hot Food Hot

After cooking meat and poultry on the grill, keep it hot until served – at 140ºF or warmer.

Serving the Food

The Warning Signs Of A Gastric Ulcer

A gastric  ulcer  occurs when there has been a break in the protective lining of the stomach which leads to further erosion of both the lining of the stomach and the intestines. Such erosion will result in a raw, open and painful sore occurring in the stomach lining.

Gastric  Ulcers  are caused when there is an imbalance between the amount of stomach acid the body is secreting and an enzyme called Pepsin and the natural defenses of the stomach lining (known as mucosal). This may be hard at first but a simple technique is to chew each bite of food ten time before swallowing. When you have finished your meal take your time getting back to your office or worksite. Chest pain is one of the most frightening symptoms a person can have. This pain includes any type of pain or discomfort that occurs between your upper belly area and your lower neck. So we have to divide the types of chest pain into two areas – cardiac and non-cardiac. Cardiac pain is caused by a lack of oxygen to the heart muscle and can be a serious, life-threatening symptom and is the classic symptom of a heart attack. Pain from a heart attack feels like the chest is being squeezed or crushed, as if by an enormous weight or pressure is on it. Pain in the chest due to a cardiac condition is rare in children and adolescents, with a prevalence of less than 6%.

Non-cardiac pain may be caused by viruses or bacteria or be aggravated by irritants (cleaning detergents, environmental toxicity, pollution or cold air), allergens (dust mites, dander or pollen) or excessive smoking. Non-cardiac pain is also a very common and frightening symptom of panic disorder.

Lung problems that can cause chest pain include blood clot in the lung ( pulmonary embolism ), a collapse of the lung ( pneumothorax ). Inflammation of the lining around the lung ( pleurisy ) can cause chest pain that usually feels sharp, and often gets worse when you take a deep breath or cough. Angina is short termed chest pain primarily caused by the lack of oxygen supply in the body and also due to the lack of waste removal from the body. The cause may be a build-up of fatty deposits, or plaque (pronounced “plak”), inside your arteries – the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from the heart to your body. Rehabilitation Of ACL Injuries

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are one of the most debilitating and common knee injuries in sports (see ACL Injuries article). Deciding on the best course of treatment, surgery vs. non-surgery, rehab vs. no rehab, can be confusing. In general, athletes opt for surgical reconstruction and rehab since studies show athletes with ruptured ACL’s seldom regain their prior level of functioning (skills). Even non-athletes have considerable long term functional deficits and are at greater risk of further injury if they do not have surgical reconstruction. There are several surgical considerations including using a graft from the patient (autograft) vs. using a graft from a donor (allograft). The most common technique uses the middle 1/3 of the patients patellar tendon for the reconstruction. For the sake of this article, I will assume the most common surgical procedure has been performed (and by a highly skilled surgeon).

Early movement is the key to rehab. Since modern surgical techniques provide very good fixation (anchoring), bending (flexion) and straightening (extension) the knee can begin immediately after surgery. A constant passive motion (CPM) machine is recommended if the patient won’t be starting physical therapy immediately. The initial range of motion (ROM) goal is full extension and 110 degrees of flexion. Early movement helps strengthen the graft and reduces the formation of deleterious scar tissue. It also helps prevent breakdown of healthy tissue such as the joint surfaces (cartilage). ROM can also be improved by use of a stationary bike and/or swimming pool.

Controlling fluid (  edema ) build up in the knee early is very important. Our goal (before full weight bearing is allowed) is 1cm or less.  Edema  interferes with muscle activation and ROM. Compression via a bandage or sleeve, along with ice/cryotherapy machine are commonly used after surgery. Massage, ultrasound, and various forms of electrical stimulation can be utilized during physical therapy.

Keeping pain low is also key. Pain interferes with healing and motivation. Medications, cryotherapy, massage all can help reduce pain.

Achieving good quad muscle activation early is also important. Weight bearing should not be allowed until the patient can perform a straight leg raise with full extension, otherwise the patient is at increased risk of developing patellar-femoral pain. The body shuts down the muscles around the knee (primarily the quads) after a traumatic event (surgery). Getting the muscles to work properly again, is the focus of rehab once ROM goals have been met and  edema  is under control. Patients that are instructed in quad exercises prior to surgery usually can achieve good quad muscle activation within a day or so of the operation.

Exercises are designed to improve strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance. The measure of a good physical therapy rehab program is how quickly a patient is able to return to full functional status. A patient should be progressed when the tissue is ready, instead of waiting a predetermined amount of time. All people heal at different rates. Everyone should be progressed as quickly as their tissues will allow it. In general, our goal is for patients to resume sport specific training within 2-3 months after surgery…that means they have normal strength, ROM, and endurance, no pain or  edema , and can run and jump without problems. Often, our patients return to their sports in better condition than prior to their injury due to the comprehensive and intensive rehab program.

Hypertension Clinical Features – Symptoms and Forms

Symptoms

Hypertension is often asymptomatic or cause only proceeds uncharacteristic complaints. It is typically occurring in the morning as a headache, which can be reduced by increasing the bed head end. Other possible symptoms include dizziness, nausea, nosebleeds (epistaxis), fatigue and insomnia. Hypertension is recognized as a risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. How Stress Triggers Heart Attacks and What You Can Do About It

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States (with 596,577 each year), barely edging out cancer which has 576,691. One third of all deaths is, in fact, due to heart disease. Several factors are known to play a critical role in relation to heart disease, and it’s now well-known that one of the major things that leads to a heart attack is excess stress. Stress can, of course, come from several sources, but it is usually either physical of emotional. In this article we’ll look at exactly how stress triggers a heart attack.

How a Heart attack Begins

Heart disease starts with the buildup of plaque on the walls of the arteries of your heart. Plaque consists of cholesterol, other fats, calcium, cellular waste, and various products of inflammation. Since cholesterol plays a major role, let’s look at it first. As you probably know, cholesterol comes in two varieties referred to as LDL (the bad kind) and HDL (the good kind). But it’s the LDL cholesterol that we’re mainly concerned with in relation to plaque (HDL also plays an important role in relation to it, as we’ll see later). Under the microscope LDL cholesterol particles are seen to be different sized; some are large while others are small, and it’s the small ones that do the most damage. The reason for this is that they are small enough to easily slip through the cells that line the walls of the arteries, and they become oxidized when they enter this region. As a result, the immune system sees them as foreign invaders and sends what are called macrophages to deal with them (destroy them). The macrophages gobble them up and in the process they become bloated, and are referred to foam cells. These foam cells form a relatively large mass within the artery wall that usually protrudes into its interior. Indeed, in time, a fibrous “cap” develops over the mass of foam cells. This is the plaque mentioned earlier (with the area near the cap being the most dangerous section of it).

In practice it usually takes years to build up plaque in this way, and surprisingly it rarely develops to the state where it completely blocks off the artery. Indeed, plaque buildup by itself only causes a heart attack in about 15-percent of cases. Most attacks occur because inflammatory substances are eventually secreted by the foam cells, and they invade the cap and cause it to rupture. This creates a “channel” through to the surface of the cap, and material from the core (referred to as “tissue factor”) rises through it and emerges out the top – much like the lava in a volcanic eruption. When the tissue factor encounters the blood passing over the cap it causes a blood clot to form. If this clot is large enough to halt the normal flow of blood in the artery a heart attack occurs.

How Does Stress Affect this Process?

To understand how stress might affect this we have to look at how stress, and particularly, a stress response, occurs. First of all, let’s consider the difference between physical and emotional stress. The major way physical stress is produced in the body is through exercise. Exercise causes the heart to beat faster, and it also causes our arteries to pulse at a greater rate. This means that they move in and out further, and this will obviously have an effect on the cap and the nearby plaque. But exercise also keeps arteries supple and flexible, which is important. So moderate exercise will not usually cause a heart attack; in fact, it’s good for the heart and arteries.

In the case of emotional stress the heart also beats faster and the arteries flex more. What is important here is the “stress response;” it’s what occurs in your body when you experience something that causes stress. This response involves two hormones called adrenaline and cortisol along with another hormone called norepinephrine. In a stress response adrenaline is called up first; it causes the heart to pulse faster, which sends extra blood to the muscles and organs. It also triggers the release of what is called fibrinogen, which increases the rate of blood clotting. Finally, it helps increase the body’s energy by releasing glucose from its stored form called glycogen.

Once this first stage is well underway, a second stage comes into play. It triggers the production of cortisol. One of its first jobs is to replace energy that the adrenaline rush has depleted. Cortisol is also used by the immune system; it alerts it to respond to any infection or injury in the body. In response the immune system sends out white blood cells. Cortisol also acts as a check on the overall response, shutting it down when it is no longer needed. Norepinephrine works alongside adrenaline to help produce energy. It is also involved in controlling blood pressure and maintaining sugar levels.

How Does All This Affect a Heart Attack?

Our problem now is: how does the action of adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine create a heart attack? It might seem strange that it could do this, as it’s obviously an important process in the body. We’ve also seen that inflammation, that is controlled by the immune system, plays a large role in heart disease. Inflammation creates the foam cells within the plaque. It’s important to note, however, that a single stress response does little damage; it’s when the responses get out of control and come one after the other that the problems begin. When this occurs your immune system can become desensitized to cortisol and since cortisol controls the overall stress response, this can allow inflammation to get out of control.

Adrenaline also triggers the release of fibrinogen, a blood-clotting agent, and if too much adrenaline is created, too much fibrinogen will also be created, which is a serious risk factor for a heart attack.

It’s also important to note that in most cases several small attacks that are barely noticed frequently preceded the main one. A small crack occurs in the cap and a corresponding small blood clot occurs that does not block off the artery and may be barely noticed. Clots of these types dissolve quickly and the cap heals over, but several of them set the stage for a larger crack and much larger blood clot as the cap weakens. And these smaller attacks are usually triggered by stress.

High blood pressure is also a risk factor. It puts the artery walls under an increased load as the artery pulses. With chronic stress and its associated increase in cortisol along with norepineephrine, problems can also arise. Excess norepinephrine, for example, can cause small deposits of plaque to break loose and cause problems.

So it’s not a single factor associated with stress that causes heart attacks, it’s actually several things.

What You Can Do to Avoid Problems

One of the best measures of your heart attack risk is your cholesterol numbers, in particular, the ratios of the numbers. The ratio of your HDL to your triglyceride is one of the most important ones. Triglyceride levels of greater than 120 mg/dL and HDL levels less than 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women indicate small, dense LDL particles. So, in general, your triglyceride/HDL ratio should be less than 2. Also your ratio of HDL/total cholesterol should be less than 24%.

So what can you do to improve these ratios and decrease your risk of a heart attack? Basically, there are four things you have to try to prevent, and they are:

  • The buildup of plaque
  • Excess inflammation (which causes foam cells)
  • Cracking of the cap
  • Blood blot formation above the cap

The major thing you must do is lower your stress level, and there are several ways you can do this.

  • Meditation. One of the most important things in meditation is to clear your mind and to pay attention to your breathing. Keep your mind blank and relax as much as possible as you breathe in and out.
  • Avoid negative thoughts. They can cause considerable stress and you must get rid of them as quickly as possible after they form. And the best way to do this is substitute a positive thought for them.
  • Music. Music can be very helpful in relaxing and relieving stress. Listening to music makes you feel comfortable; just relax and let it flow over you.
  • Sufficient sleep is also critical. Lack of sleep will create considerable stress so make sure you get a sufficient amount.
  • Exercise. Many people don’t like exercise, but it is one of the best stress relievers. And I can’t emphasize it too much. Something as simple as a walk can help. Don’t overdo it at first, however.

Diet is also critical, and there are several things that help in relation to it.

  • Avoid excess sugar, particularly fructose.
  • Eat as many vegetables and fruit as possible.
  • Avoid excess saturated and trans fats.
  • Get sufficient vitamin D.
  • Get sufficient Omega-3 fat

Finally, it’s important to have a good social life, and refrain from smoking.
