Instead of shorts or sweatpants, players should wear loose-fitting jeans over compression shorts or baggy pants. If it is cold outside, players should wear full length compression tights under their jeans instead of shorts.

Players should wear comfortable tennis shoes or boots. They need to have good tread on the soles, so that players can make sudden movements without falling on their faces. For games that will occur in a grassy area, cleats or spikes can be worn for better traction.

The Different Types of Bone Cancer

Bone cancer is a particularly difficult and severe type of cancer. It is caused when there is a problem with the cells which make bones. Every year in the United States, over two thousand people are diagnosed with this type of cancer, in the form of a bone tumor. These frequently occur in children and adolescents. They are less common in adults, especially as they get older, but they do occur. Metastatic bone cancer is more common in adults. This is a type of cancer which spreads to the bone from another cancer site.

There are several different types of bone cancer; there are six common ones, beginning with osteosarcoma. It is the most common type of malignant bone cancer. It occurs more often in males who are between the ages of ten and twenty five, though it does occur in adults older than twenty five as well. Typically, the bone tumors occur in the long bones of the arms and legs, around the knees and shoulders. This type of cancer has a high risk of spreading to the lungs. Its five year survival rate runs at approximately sixty five percent.

Ewing’s sarcoma is a very aggressive type of bone cancer, typically occurring in children between the ages of four and fifteen. Again, it is more commonly seen in males. It rarely occurs in people over the age of thirty. It usually shows up in the midpoint of the long bones in the arms and legs. In the event that the cancer has not spread to the lungs or other parts of the body, its three year survival rate is approximately sixty five percent.

Chondrosarcoma is responsible for a quarter of all malignant tumors and is the second most common type of bone cancer. It occurs in cartilage cells and is incredibly unpredictable. The tumors can be either aggressive or slow in forming. In the case of the latter tumors, the survival rate is about ninety percent; for aggressive tumors, it has only a thirty percent five year survival rate.

Fibrosarcoma is a very rare type of bone cancer and occurs in adults between the ages of thirty five and fifty five. It generally shows up in the leg, behind the knee, and is more common in males. Chordoma is also very rare; the survival rate is not very often. It, too, is more common in males and typically occurs once the patient is over the age of thirty. There are also a number of benign bone tumors.

Bone cancer symptoms get worse over time. The most common symptom is pain. At first, it may occur more at night or when the patient is active. The signs of bone cancer may last for a few weeks, a few months, or even years. Sometimes, it is possible to feel the tumors, in the form of either a mass or a lump, generally right on the bone or in the tissue surrounding it.

Other bone cancer symptoms include fevers, chills, night sweats, and inexplicable weight loss. However, these signs are not very common unless the bone tumor has spread to other parts of the body. It has also been used in the production of ice cream and can be identified in some toothpaste particularly created for delicate teeth. Potassium nitrate is also one of the three components of black powder, along with pulverized charcoal and sulfur, where it acts as an oxidizer.

Antibiotics – Too Much Of A Good Thing?

Antibiotics have long been seen as a panacea – but is it possible to have too much of of a good thing? Some commentators certainly think so.

“It is ironic that this humble fungus, hailed as a benefactor of mankind may by its very success prove to be a deciding factor in the decline of the present civilization”, says

Dr. John I Pitt, The Genus Penicillin, 1979. (1)

The Soil Association is also worried, saying: “MRSA, the hospital super bug, arose through overuse of penicillin-type drugs in human medicine…it continues to mutate. This is a doomsday scenario and could cause massive loss of life.” (2)

“Our overuse of medical antibiotics has reduced the human gut to a burned-out minefield, destroying the good guys along with the bad guys,” points out Dr. Jordan Rubin in The Maker’s Diet. (3)

Is this another case of certain groups and individuals over-dramatising and scaremongering? Or should we be doing something to mitigate the effects of an excess of antibiotics?

There is no doubt that antibiotics currently save many lives. So the purpose of this article is not to demonise them but to examine their role (including their overuse in many cases), and to outline some essential strategies to reduce their potentially damaging effects on the body. We will examine the following areas below:

The internal ecosystem: a delicate balance

This article is based on the following essential principle:

“There is a delicate balance or symbiosis that exists of micro organisms within the body that when altered can lead to disease.”

A healthy human adult has about three to four pounds of beneficial bacteria and fungi living within her/his intestines. These microbes compete for nutrients from the food you consume. The beneficial bacteria (like probiotics) keep the bad guys (like yeast) in check and cause them to produce nutrients like B vitamins. (1)

The normal ratio is around 85% good bacteria and 15% bad micro organisms. Now unfortunately most people show the reverse ratio. One reason for this shift is through the use of antibiotics. (4)

A brief history of antibiotics

Antibiotics are also known as anti-bacterials, anti-microbials and mycotoxins.

In 1928 Alexander Fleming accidentally stumbled across penicillin when he noticed that a mould (fungi) had contaminated agar plate upon which he had tried to harvest bacteria. Bacteria near the mould died. This led scientists down the path of antibiotics in treating infectious diseases.

But fungi were actually the first organisms found to cause infectious diseases in humans. Schoenlein (1790 – 1864) linked fungi to ringworm (fungal infection) and began the fight against fungi until Fleming led the new drive against bacteria and later viruses. (1)

What are antibiotics used for?

Antibiotics only work against infections caused by bacteria. (5)

Therefore they do not work against viruses or fungal infections. According to the American College of Physicians, 70% of all antibiotics dispensed are for upper respiratory infection (URI) including bronchitis, sinusitis and pharyngitis.

However according to the Paediatric Infectious Disease Journal, antibiotics are often ineffective in these cases. (6)

A growing number of medical professionals assert that most URI’s are not caused by bacteria but fungi. (1,7)

In 1999, the prestigious Mayo Clinic announced that researchers had discovered the real cause of chronic sinusitis – 95 % of patients suffered from a fungal, not bacterial, infection. (2)

Two out of three infants receive antibiotics before they turn one year old according to the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. (7)

Now you may do your best to avoid taking antibiotics, but if you are consuming commercially farmed animals you are most certainly getting a regular dose. U.S. pharmaceutical firms produce more than 35 million pounds of antibiotics each year, and animals receive the vast majority, which is a good reason for paying more for grass-fed, free-range and organic meats. (8)

This information is not new, it just takes time to get it out there. The U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and American Academy of Paediatrics published guidelines for the appropriate use of antibiotics and this resulted in a 41% decrease in prescriptions to children under 4, according to one study. But the problem (many in the medical profession believe) is the lack of attention to diet and insufficient measures to reduce the effect of antibiotics. (7)

Symptoms of an imbalance

Antibiotics can lead to dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance in the digestive system) which causes havoc to the body’s immune system.

Dr. Jordan S. Rubin, author of the Makers Diet, personally battled severe health problems due to an imbalance leading to Crohn’s disease, whereby victims experience progressive symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhoea, extreme weight loss and perhaps premature death. According to Dr. Rubin the prevention and treatment of dysbiosis present the most challenging problems doctors face today.

Dysbiosis may lead to allergies, irrital bowel syndrome, breast and colon cancer, increased suspectibility to infection, food cravings, impaired, mental clarity, hypoglycaemia and numerous other illnesses, according to Dr Rubin.

He adds that most doctors rarely connect the cause of illness to the microbe balance.

Furthermore most people are too embarrassed to talk about their constant diarrhea, indigestion, gas, constipation, abdominal bloating and pains. (3)

So if the overuse of antibiotics leads to intestinal imbalances and fungal infections, why don’t doctors know this?

According to The Fungal Link it’s because fungal infections were rare 50 years ago because pharmaceutical drugs were rare.

“We’re using antibiotics that are so powerful they save lives, but they also destroy normal flora, particularly in our intestinal tract, says Dr. Michael G. Rinaldi.” This allows pathogenic germs to colonise and eventually become infectious. (1)

Suggestions from Dr. Holland

Dr. David Holland believes going back for another round of serious or stronger antibiotics potentially leads to serious repercussions.

He admits most doctors are generally unaware that antibiotics wipe out normal, protective intestinal bacteria with as little as a single dose, as antibiotics are broad-spectrum (they nuke them all including the good guys – Lactobacillus acidophilus and other probiotics – that protect us against yeast, salmonella, cholera and harmful E. Coli species overgrowing).

Prevention

He also suggests taking a look at your current lifestyle. Smoking, excessive alcohol intake, lack of exercise, regular sugar, and high stress levels are all good ways to get an infection.

Remedial action – if you take an antibiotic

Dr. Holland recommends the following strategies that you can discuss with your GP.

Take an anti-fungal together with the antibiotic.

Replace the good bacteria by supplementing with a probiotic (not the sugar drinks currently marketed, instead ask at your local health food store or chemist).

However, Dr. Holland states that once many antibiotics are consumed, probiotics alone may not be enough. So a change in diet and prescription, or natural anti-fungals are required.

Take an antioxidant supplement which includes vitamin A, C, E, zinc or selenium as they are antifungal. (1)

Signs of Ovulation

Ovulation is what happens during the   menstrual   cycle , whereby an egg is released from the ovary, then travels through the fallopian tube, where it is then available to sperm in order to be fertilized. The ovulation of a woman is very important in order to understand pregnancy and the  menstrual   cycle . Having the knowledge of your ovulation period will assist you in becoming pregnant, along with understanding the correct time to test if you are pregnant.

There are a few ovulation signs that a woman can look for, when trying to decipher which day of their cycle starts their ovulation process.

Counting the days is the most popular and simplest way. For the average woman, the ovulation process occurs 14 days before the first day of their period. These 14 days are in actual fact a very good indicator as to when ovulation has started and does not generally vary largely between women. However, it can be difficult to indicate as to when your next ovulation will happen, as the time span between your period and next ovulation can vary enormously between women and also between cycles. Therefore, counting days is a very retrospective indicator.

The consistency of your cervical mucus can also be a sign of ovulation. Cervical Mucus Monitoring is one of the most instant ways in which to indicate whether a woman is ovulating or not. The cervical secretions can be tested by gathering a sample of the mucus that it present around the lips of your genitalia. This should be tested by placing the discharge between your index finger and thumb and stretching, to observe its consistency. The consistency of cervical mucus can in actual fact change after menstruation, immediately before ovulation, during and after ovulation. Therefore, looking at the consistency will be a sure way of predicting whether you are in your cycle.

Most women, at the beginning of their cycle, the days after menstruation, do not have cervical mucus that they can test and may also feel dry around their vulva. This is the period whereby women are less likely to conceive.

As the cycle advances, a discharge will again start to appear, which should be white or off-white in color. As this period advances before ovulation, the discharge will begin to have a more substantial consistency. This is when it can be tested between your finger and thumb, whereby it will not break immediately.

The cervical mucus will appear to be more opaque in color during ovulation, and it can be stretched a couple of centimeters when testing without resulting in breakage. This is also the period when the discharge is very abundant. When the cervical mucus is more substantial and most abundant, then a woman is at her peak of ovulation, which is the highest chance for conception.

It is after ovulation that the discharge will revert back to a state similar to that before ovulation and return to a dry state similar to immediately after menstruation. Once this has happened you should be very near to your next period.

One of the other signs of ovulation is the increase in your basal body temperature. Although this is yet another retrospective indicator, it is a very good predictor. It is just after your period of ovulation that your temperature can rise to approximately 0.4 to 0.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature will remain until the end of your cycle, rising up and down. However, the steep increase of temperature after ovulation is the indicator or such ovulation. It is advised to keep a log of your temperatures throughout a few cycles, so that you can begin to predict when your ovulation will begin.

You may also experience other signs of ovulation which include an increase in sex drive, tenderness of the breasts, bloating of the abdomen, heightened senses as well as an elevated level of LH (luteinizing hormone), which can be detected with the use of ovulation kits.

Preventing, Treating and Removing Nasal Polyps

Sinus irritation, chronic sinusitis, people who have bad allergies and people who are allergic to aspirin are just some of the types of people that are more prone to getting nasal polyps.

So what are some methods for preventing these growths in the nose, getting relief and treatment options? – And how do you go about removing nasal polyps if they get unbearable?

Sinus Rinse

Since sinusitis, sinus irritation and chronic inflammation of the nasal cavities put a person at a higher risk for developing these growths in the nose, prevention is very important. By simply irrigating your nose daily with a nasal irrigation system that can be purchased at any drug store, you can keep your nose clear of debris and irritants. In a very short time of using the nasal irrigation system, you will notice that you breathe much better and your quality of life will improve tremendously! You may even notice that your workouts are better and your sleep is better.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a natural remedy for many different ailments and conditions, including polyps in the nose and it smells great! To use tea tree oil, first, you will want to dilute the oil with purified water since pure tea tree oil can be rather potent. Next you want to take a cotton swab, dab it into the diluted tea tree oil and rub the swab on the polyps in your nose. If you can’t reach them with the swab, simply swab the inside of your nasal passages with the oil. This will often help with inflammation. This is a great option for getting relief and treating nasal polyps naturally.

Medical Options

Sometimes, all of the natural treatments ad care in the world just doesn’t seem to do the trick. – And this is when you may want to consider seeing a medical professional. If you are experiencing more serious symptoms from your condition like sleep apnea, don’t wait, go see your doctor!

Nasal Sprays, Drops and Steroids

The first treatment option that a doctor may suggest for you is the use of nasal sprays, drops and a steroid called prednisone. He may suggest that you use one of these items alone or in combination with another. This will help stop the inflammation.

Surgery

When all else fails, doctors may suggest surgery to remove nasal polyps. Surgery is never the first choice for treating nasal polyps and unfortunately doesn’t always work long-term. As a matter of fact, 75% of people who have surgery experience re-growth of the pesky little growths within 4 years!

As always, consult your doctor before using any natural treatment option or supplement, especially if you have a medical condition or are on medications.

Uterine Fibroids and Infertility

Uterine fibroids are very common occurrences in women. They are also known as myoma or leiomyoma. Uterine fibroids can cause infertility, but not all of the time. Uterine fibroids are benign tumors affecting the uterine muscle tissue. Uterine fibroids are not cancerous tumors, but they can affect fertility, nonetheless.

There are three types of uterine fibroids. Subserosal fibroids grow on the outside of the uterus. They can cause little or no symptoms unless they are severe. They give the uterus a bumpy appearance. Tumors can grow on stalks and they are referred to as pedunculated subserosal fibroids. They can cause back pain, pelvic pain, frequent urination and cramping. If the fibroids grow large, they can affect the kidneys and other surrounding organs. Subserosal fibroids should not cause any infertility issues. However, if they grow large, they can put pressure on fallopian tubes and ovaries, inhibiting their function.

Intramural fibroids are found in the muscle of the uterus. They are usually round in shape and can vary in size from microscopic to enormous. Some can get up to 50 pounds. Intramural fibroids can cause the size of the uterus to enlarge. Intramural fibroids can cause excessive menstrual bleeding, cramping, pelvic and back pain, and prolonged periods. Again, intramural fibroids may not cause any recognizable symptoms and may only be discovered during a vaginal exam or during infertility treatment. Intramural fibroids can cause problems with conception. They can cause problems with implantation or miscarriage.

The submucous fibroid causes the most problems with fertility. They can grow inside of the uterus. They commonly interfere with the uterine lining development and placement. This can cause miscarriage and difficulty with implantation. It can also cause painful periods and excessive bleeding. The submucous fibroid can develop a stalk and the mass can protrude from the stalk into the uterus. The stalk can allow the submucous fibroid to move further into the uterus and sometimes through the cervix and into the vagina. If the tumor grows large, then the uterus may recognize it as a foreign body and contract to expel it. If this happens it can cause severe pain similar to labor pains.

Fibroids are sometimes found during routine examinations but they can not always be detected this way. They are commonly found during ultrasound or during surgery. If fibroids are severe, then you may need to seek treatment. A myomectomy is a surgical procedure where fibroids are removed one at a time and the uterus is hopefully spared. This is the common treatment for women who still want to have children. Hysterectomy is the other option where the uterus is removed. Talk with your infertility specialist about what options there are for you and your treatment.
