Although generally not facing health matters, your kids feet are exposed in certain dangers, some of which make kids flip flops a real necessity, especially during the hot months of summer -and not only. Although it is true that toenail fungi are more common in adults, it is also true that they can affect a kids toenail health, as well as that they can be easily passed among family members. But let’s get the story from the beginning.

First, let’s talk about the causes of toenail fungi…

Humid areas, as public gyms, showers or swimming pools are ideal environments for toenail infections. Tight-fitting closed sport or other shoes, that prevent the feet from drying off can help the fungi evolve and spread from one toe to another. Not drying off the feet thoroughly (especially the part between the toes), after a shower or some intense activity that makes them sweat, increases the danger of a serious infection.

Second, which are the symptoms of toenail fungi?

The symptoms can be readily observed and may vary from little flaws, yellow, dark blue or brown spots to swelling or thickening of the nail.

Treatment or Prevention? That is always the question…

First, let’s get things clear on medical treatment. The first thing one should do after seeing some sign of a fungus on his/her child’s toenails, would be to visit a foot doctor, who is the only one he/she should trust for applying the right treatment. DO NOT ask your pedicurist, or other friends having similar experiences. DO NOT even search Google or medical forums for information. Beware of the fact that a toenail fungus can evolve to a serious problem for your child’s toenail health and remember that just like all health problems the sooner you cope with a fungus, the better the results. Another thing you should keep in mind is that pedicurists -no matter how good and proficient they are- are not doctors and should not act like doctors. A pedicurist willing to act some treatment on the infected nail, probably doesn’t know that his/her tools will probably be infected and this way the fungus might move from one client to another.

Toenail fungi vary a lot and different treatments, such as medical nail polishes, special drops or even oral medication and partial or total surgical removal of the nail might be applied. I know that all this sounds dangerous and painful but it is not. Just be sure to advise your doctor, and you and your child will have nothing to worry about.

But again, I always believe that it would be much wiser to try to prevent or at least reduce the possibilities of an infection, and, the easiest way to achieve this is by educating your children on ways of prevention. Knowing that toes, toenails and the parts between toes should be dried off thoroughly and that not all places fit all footwear are two important rules that will protect your kids toes health. Actually, this is why kids flip flops can become an ideal out-door footwear during the warm months of the year and in-door during the whole year. In our warm winter in-door surroundings “closed” slippers or other footwear will increase the dangers of developing several kinds of toe or toenail infection and that’s why podiatrists all over the world (but largely in warmer countries) suggest footwear that resembles barefoot in your in-door walks.

The patient can usually collect the sample themselves and take it with them to an appointment, as long as they collect it and store it in a clean and hygienic manner (Note that some labs may not accept specimens collected at home for onychomycosis testing, so ask first).

Use a clean pair of nail clippers, scissors, or nail file – preferably something that has not been used by anyone else, or at the least, that has been thoroughly washed. Onychomycosis testing doesn’t require a large specimen, but collect at least a sixteenth of a teaspoon if possible. Place the sample in a clean container – again, it’s important that the container has been thoroughly washed because a dirty container may already contain environmental fungal spores and  nail   fungus  lab tests can be invalidated by contamination. The sample is not very perishable, but take it within a day or two of seeing your physician.

In the lab, onychomycosis testing has several stages and may differ from place to place. Generally a quick examination for fungal elements using a microscope gives a rapid preliminary result. Then the sample is planted on culture media and incubated. Some  fungi  take weeks to grow, even in laboratory conditions, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait a month or longer for the results of your  nail   fungus  lab tests. If something does grow, laboratory staff will do extra testing to determine the fungal species so that your doctor knows whether your treatment is the right one.

The other thing a doctor will check for on the x-ray is a sprain or strain of some kind. Fractures involve the bone – sprains are about the connective tissue. A strain is stretching of a ligament or tendon, and a sprain is a tear in the fiber. Both can potentially be as serious as a break. They take time to heal. The medical staff will immobilize your foot with a cast or brace to allow that to happen.


Disease is possible culprit. Gout comes on suddenly and can cause intense pain. The area around the ankle will be red and tender. A person stricken with gout may feel discomfort in other joints, as well, especially the big toe. Gout occurs when crystal builds up in the open spaces of the joints. The crystals feel like broken glass rubbing against the structures.

Plastic Surgery – What to Expect From the Recovery Period

Cosmetic surgery is gaining popularity rapidly, even among the “common folk” not just celebrities. There are plastic surgeries to reshape and enhance almost every part of the body. If you are considering having one of these procedures done, one of the questions one your mind may be, “What is the recovery going to be like”?

This is certainly a question to discuss with your cosmetic surgeon, but this article will give you a brief run down on the types of recoveries you can expect from several of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures.

Breast Enhancement

Breast enhancement can include not only the insertion of breast implants, but also a breast lift. The recoveries from each are slightly different although the procedures are often combined making the recoveries one and the same. A breast lift is somewhat more traumatic to the breast tissues as some of the skin is actually removed and the areola is often completely repositioned.

Breast implant surgery today, is often accomplished with just tiny little incisions. A face lift is similar to a breast lift in that skin is removed leaving a long scar. The recovery period from a face lift will involve swelling,  bruising , and pain (these are features of all the surgeries as they are actually signs of the body’s natural healing processes).

Most people are not comfortable returning to work until most of the swelling has gone down, but from a purely medical perspective it is possible to return earlier. There will be scars from this cosmetic surgery, but hopefully the plastic surgeon will have deftly hid them well within the hairline.


Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is one of the most popular plastic surgeries performed today. The recovery period will of course include swelling and  bruising . The nose will be packed with gauze for a day or two to keep the newly formed shape from collapsing. A nose brace may be required for weeks thereafter to protect it from harm. Cosmetic surgeons will prescribe patients medication to help manage the pain and tenderness. Most patients can be back to work within a week.


Liposuction can be performed on many different areas of the body but the recovery is typically the same for all. The area that received the trauma will be sore and perhaps  bruised  and swollen. The muscles around the area will also be sore for a few days afterward.

Although there may be some pain and discomfort, most plastic surgeons recommend that liposuction patients get up and start walking around as soon as possible post-surgery in order to get the circulation going again to prevent blood clots.

The Hidden Disaster in the Small Intestine

The small intestine of course is where the food makes its most important part of the digestion trip. The vast majority of the assimilation takes place here so the preparation that took place in the mouth, esophagus, stomach and   duodenum  must be as complete as possible. As you know, if you read my previous articles on the digestion process, most Americans and probably a vast portion of the world’s population eat for entertainment and not to feed their body properly. You only have to look around you to see the problems of obesity, and disease to know that there is something very wrong in the United States, the world’s most advanced nation.

The small intestine is really a tube in three parts that starts at the pyloric sphincter (controls the amount of food that moves into the small intestine from the stomach), the  duodenum  (which we discussed in my article The Influence of the  Duodenum  on Health), the jejunum, and ileum. The food is pushed through the small intestine by a process of muscular-wavelike contractions called peristalsis. The inside walls of the jejunum and ileum are covered in wrinkles or folds called plicae circulares; they are considered a permanent feature. Another feature is the rugae which are considered non-permanent or temporary, allowing for distention and contraction. Extending from the plicae circulares are microscopic hair-like pieces of tissue called villi (Latin for “shaggy hair”.

The small intestine is also lined with simple finger or columnar like projections called epithelial. The epithelial cells also have hair-like projections known as microvilli. The function of these three, the plicae circulares, the villi and the microvilli is to increase the amount of inner surface area of the intestine estimated to be 250 sq. meters or about the surface size of a tennis court. The reason for this large surface area is for secretion of enzymes and absorption of nutrients.

I could go into a great deal more detail here such as where the different nutrients are absorbed, why there is a layer of water on the surface cells on the microvilli, and how proteolytic enzymes cleave proteins; this area of the body is fascinating. But I just want to give you enough basic anatomy and function here so you can understand what a disaster is occurring in this most important area of your body.

As the chime enters the small intestine, sensors there on the wall of  duodenum  (the first nine inch section of the small intestine) can tell how much of this meal was actually digested in your stomach. As I discussed in the previous chapter your digestion is highly subject to the amount of plant enzymes present. Plant enzymes are only found in raw foods or plant enzyme supplements. They are not found in cooked, refined or irradiated foods that destroy enzymes. Plant enzymes in the food do the real digesting of your meal right down to the molecule level. If there were not enough enzymes, which is the reality of the American diet, then the meal was not digested completely and is dangerous.

There is a safeguard here; it is the functions of  duodenum  and the jejunum to continue digesting food from the stomach. But this function is really for fine tuning a properly digested meal from the stomach not to save an undigested meal every time you eat. An undigested meal cannot be allowed to travel into the ileum as this is life threatening.

Enzymes from your mouth, plants and pancreas continue digestion in the jejunum to fine tune the meal as I said above. But now we have an undigested meal here with one big problem the carbohydrates in the meal. The carbohydrates should have been digested in the predigestive stomach by the enzymes that should have been in the meal. So the carbohydrates undigested are moving into the jejunum. In the jejunum those carbohydrates can only be broken down into disaccharides by the enzymes there and disaccharides are dangerous to the body.

To be useful to the body those carbohydrates have to be broken down to monosaccharides (takes place in predigestion with the proper enzymes) which are single molecule. So we end up with a lot of undigested carbohydrates in the small intestine. Well there is a safe guard here at the ileum which is yeast and fungus that live in the small intestine; they will digest this sugar which saves the blood stream. But as I just said this is a safe guard not to be abused as it is abused in America. Where every meal is missing those vital enzymes in the predigestion and undigested carbohydrates are moving into the ileum.

What needs to be saved in the blood stream is of the utmost importance. It is the immune system that needs to be protected from this sugar. Because if this sugar escapes out into the blood stream it wrecks havoc with the immune system and you will have an autoimmune disaster. The autoimmune system through aggregated lymphatic follicles, nutrophils, lymphocytes and other white blood cells will work to clean this sugar up, this should not be happening. Too many of these particles in the bloodstream will drive your immune system crazy. If this is allowed to happen too often you will find yourself with an immune system that attacks you and you will have one of the many autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis as the end result.

What is a normal bowel movement?

Colour: Medium to dark brown. Bile produced by the liver and secreted by the gallbladder has a yellowish green colour that gets converted into the characteristic stool brown colour by bacteria in the gut on the way through. If stool is light or clay coloured, sometimes there is inadequate bile production or flow. If stool is yellowy it may mean that stool is passing through the digestive tract too quickly for bacteria to break the bile down and turn it brown.

Diameter: Normal stool diameter is approximately 1-2″. Very narrow stool can signify inflammation in the bowels that should be addressed.

Consistency: Stool should be firm but not hard nor loose and there shouldn’t be any undigested food in it. Undigested food can be from a lack of digestive enzymes, low stomach acid, or overly rapid transit time i.e. stool is passing through too quickly to be properly digested.

How often should I go?

At least once per day every day, any less than that is constipation. People in great health will sometimes have a bowel movement 2-3 times per day. Every time you eat, your entire intestinal tract will contract and release, a process referred to as peristalsis. Peristalsis moves everything in the intestinal tract along which should prompt a bowel movement.

What if there is blood when I have a bowel movement?

Constipation can often cause harder stools that are more difficult to pass. This can lead to tearing and blood. If the blood is bright red and just a bit on the toilet paper when you wipe it’s probably nothing to worry about, but if it’s more than that, if it persists or if it’s dark in colour you should mention it to your medical doctor.

What about mucous?

Mucous is a sign of inflammation. Bowels can be inflammed by food intolerances or sensitivities, mechanical irritation or infection. In any case, chronic inflammation of the bowel is not a good thing so if you see mucous regularly, best to see your naturopathic doctor for assistance.

Should it float or sink?

The constituents of the bowel movement will determine whether it floats or sinks, it is not a reflection of whether the bowels are healthy or not.

What causes constipation?

There are a number of factors that can cause constipation:

  1. Food sensitivities/intolerances – most people have food intolerances that they aren’t aware of but that do cause problems like skin rashes like acne, eczema and psoriasis, irritable bowel syndrome symptoms like constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, mucous in the stool, rectal itching, rectal leaking, headaches, fatigue, joint pain, sinus congestion or recurring sinusitis, vaginal irritation not related to yeast, environmental allergies, asthma, arthritis and autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or lupus.
  2. Dehydration – water helps keep stool softer and easier to pass. Inadequate water intake will mean harder stool that’s more difficult to pass. Getting at least 6-8 glasses of water per day is a pretty easy way to fix constipation problems.
  3.   Dysbiosis  dysbiosis  is overgrowth of unwanted organisms in the digestive tract and not enough good bacteria to keep the bowels healthy. Some people try to restore probiotics through eating yogourt, however dairy is a very common food sensitivity and there’s no way of knowing how many good bacteria you are getting per serving of yogourt. I recommend use of a good quality probiotic where you know what strains of good bacteria you are getting and in exactly what quantity.
  4. Inadequate bile production or flow – the liver produces bile and the gallbladder secretes it when prompted to do so by stomach acid emptying from the stomach. Bile is a bit of an irritant to the gut which prompts contractions to move it along and get it out.
  5. Other irritants – coffee and tea can act as irritants to the bowel. For some people this helps keep their bowels more regular, although this is not a healthy way of maintaining regularity. Irritation from coffee and tea can also cause inflammation in the digestive tract that inhibits proper bowel movement.
  6. Low stomach acid – stomach acid is the trigger for bile release from the gallbladder and bile stimulates bowels to move. Heartburn, fullness after eating a small amount, burping, belching, upper abdominal bloating and difficulty digesting protein rich foods like eggs, can all be signs of low stomach acid.
  7. Inadequate magnesium intake – magnesium helps hold more water in the stool keeping it softer and easier to pass. It also helps with muscle relaxation which may allow bowels to relax and let stool through easier.
  8. Wheat bran – wheat bran is touted as being helpful for constipation and many find it does help. However because it acts to relieve constipation by irritating the bowels, regular scraping of the bowels with wheat bran is not recommended and can cause more long term damage.

What Happens to a Woman’s Body During Menopause?

What is Menopause?

Menopause marks the end of a woman’s ability to produce life. It is a normal milestone that inevitably brings changes to a woman’s body before or after their menstrual cycle stops. Though, many studies have already been conducted, most women still do not have a good understanding of what changes they will experience.

Menopause normally happens to women at their 40s, but there are those who may experience it prematurely as due to medication, surgery, hypothyroidism, Down Syndrome, enzyme deficiencies, or chemotherapy. In colder places like Alaska, women may experience menopause on their 50s. Hereditary factors may also affect a woman’s menstrual cycle. Natural menopause, however, is a gradual process that is divided into three phases; the perimenopause, menopause, and the postmenopause.

What are the Stages of Menopause?

Perimenopause is the stage where women gradually produce fewer estrogen and progesterone hormones. Limited production of these hormones brings many observable changes in a woman’s body. It usually starts in the late 40s or early 50s. It lasts until menopause stage, and the average duration can be four to ten years.

Irregular periods are common during perimenopause, but women still have greater chance of becoming pregnant. Nonetheless, menstruation can be heavier than usual with occasions of blood clots, and periods may even last longer or may occur twice in a month. Women may recognize perimenopause when they begin to experience fatigue, vaginal dryness, night sweats, anemia, decreased sex drive, or urinary tract infection.

Menopause is the phase where menstruation periods stop for a year. It is when the ovaries cease to produce eggs. It can start in the early 50s or late 60s. Furthermore, menopause can affect the production of female hormones such as serotonin or happy hormones, which causes women to have frequent mood swings, hot flashes, depression, and irritability. Levels of estrogen are also lowered, which can affect women’s bone health. Risk of developing heart disease is also evident.

Postmenopause is the last stage pointing to the years after menopause. Physicians may confirm this through a blood test where follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) are measured. These hormones increase as the ovary begins to shut down. Women may begin to experience relief and regain their energy, but are at higher risk for certain diseases, such as cervical and breast cancer. Symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and insomnia may continue.

Continuous dropping of estrogen levels may create health issues during postmenopause. Women may notice that their skin gets thinner and dryer. Urinary tract infection is also inevitable as the vaginal lining and urinary tract weaken. Tooth loss and gingivitis may also be experienced.

In severe cases, women may also experience bleeding after postmenopause, and cases of polyp growth and benign or malignant ovarian neoplasm may be observed. This is mainly why it is important that women experiencing postmenopause go to see their physician and gynecologist as often as possible.

What is the Treatment for Menopause?

There is no specific medical treatment for menopause because it is a natural occurrence that happens to all women. Instead, physicians and other medical practitioners aim to alleviate symptoms brought about by the changes. Treatments may depend on how much pain and discomfort is experienced.

Hormone-replacement therapy is seen as one of the most effective treatments for menopause. It aims to replace, if not increase, the hormones that are no longer produced by the body. Fibroids and Infertility – All Fibroids Are Not Created Equal

Fibroids can cause infertility when strategically located in the cervix, beneath the endometrial lining of the uterus or where they block the fallopian tubes. Fibroids are benign smooth muscle tumors mostly arising from the wall of the uterus. The grow slowly and take years to reach a considerable size. At least 40% of women have fibroids in the uterus. The majority of them do not have any complaints.

Fibroids cause symptoms-excessive vaginal bleeding, pressure symptoms, infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss by virtue of their position in the uterus. Asymptomatic fibroids require only periodic observation. Fibroids causing symptoms should be investigated.

Other tests for fibroids include lab tests to estimate blood loss and sampling of the lining of the uterus.

The instrument is introduced through the cervix and the fibroid is chipped using an electrical loop.Large fibroids may require multiple sessions to remove. Intramural fibroids. Fibroids large enough to reach close to the outer surface of the uterus are better removed by cutting through the outer surface of the uterus. This can be done through a large abdominal incision-open myomectomy or through minimal access surgery-laparoscopic myomectomy. Robots are sometimes used to help surgeons close the defect in the abdominal wall.

Newer methods for treatment of fibroids as uterine artery embolization-blocking the blood vessels reaching the myoma without surgery or focused ultrasound treatment-where ultrasound waves are concentrated on the fibroid leading to reduction in its size. Uterine artery embolization requires x ray exposure and can reduce the egg reserve in the ovary.

 Hepatitis  A, B and C are familiar names to most people, but there are other ways to get  hepatitis . Ethanol, which is found in alcoholic drinks, can cause  hepatitis . Alcoholic  hepatitis  can be mild or severe. People who drink alcohol in excess may also increase their chances of getting  hepatitis  C. Alcoholic  hepatitis  does not lead to cirrhosis, but cirrhosis is more common in people, who’ve been drinking alcohol for a long period of time. Some drugs have also been known to cause  hepatitis  and these include troglitazone, halothane and isoniazid.

In the case of acute  hepatitis , there maybe some symptoms to be aware of. These may include feeling tired, having a fever, nausea, poor appetite, pain near the right ribs, skin rash and dark urine.
