You can use steam vaporizers too, if you want to mix the water with a medicated inhalant.

Do You Recognize the 10 Early Warning Signs of Candida Infection?

The main objective of a diabetic patient is to control his sugar level. The food and beverages that we consume will have an effect on that control. Some food and beverages have even a bigger effect. Alcohol is one of them, and has a direct influence on diabetes management.

Alcohol should be wisely used. Alcohol has a dehydrating effect on the body, so keep that in mind. Alcohol is very high in calories, which can lead to increase in bodyweight and blood fat levels. People with poorly controlled diabetes should not drink alcohol altogether.

It is recommended that those with diabetes avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. Guidelines for diabetics and alcohol consumption are as follows: one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. Those over 65 should also only allow themselves one drink per day.

Alcohol moves through the bloodstream quite easily without ever being metabolized in the stomach. Without giving the liver the proper amount of time to break down the alcohol, it will move to other organs in the body and eventually build up in the bloodstream. Your body can only break down one ounce of alcohol per hour.

Many times people will drink more beverages on a party, than eating food. Diabetic patients can develop hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in such situations. Alcohol tends to lower blood sugar even more.

Generally, when diabetics are experiencing low blood sugar levels, the liver changes the stored carbohydrates in the body into glucose. This glucose in the bloodstream slows down the ‘low glucose’ reaction that the body is having.

So, what is happening when you are taking alcohol? When a diabetic person experiences low glucose levels while drinking alcohol, the trouble lies in that the liver, reacting to the alcohol that has built up in the bloodstream as a toxin, will go on red alert and stop producing glucose in order to cleanse the body of the alcohol. Therefore, drinking on an empty stomach is not recommended.

Drinking just one alcoholic drink can impair judgment enough to make a critical mistake in diabetes management. Diabetics should make sure that there is someone with them who knows what to watch for should a low blood sugar reaction occurs. Hypoglycemic episodes can be easily confused with being tipsy. Remember hypoglycemia can happen some hours after a drinking session.

A bracelet, necklace or identification card stating medical conditions should be worn at all times and glucose tablets should be kept nearby also. It is recommended that diabetics not take naps or fall asleep without having a snack or meal first and to check glucose levels first thing in the morning.

Keep to sensible drinking levels. Alternate an alcoholic drink with a low calorie mixer. Don’t drink on an empty stomach – enjoy a meal before or with your drink. You may need to eat a bigger, starchier meal before the party. Adjust your insulin before you drink.

Red, dry or medium-dry white wines are acceptable in moderation as are dry sherries and dry light beers, such as lagers and light ales; these are fermented with ‘low residual sugars’ and are perfect for moderate consumption. Hard liquors such as whiskey, gin or vodka can be mixed with sugar free or diet mixers.

Sweet wines, ports and sherries have high residual sugar contents, as do heavy and/or dark sweetened beers such as stout and porters. Wine coolers, hard liquors mixed with regular sodas and cocktails in general should be avoided by diabetics.

Video Gaming – Childhood Obesity

The connection between video gaming and childhood obesity has been catching a lot of attention in today’s modern world. Instead of engaging in strenuous physical activities such as sports, children are spending more hours indoors glued to television and computer screens playing video games. Can we blame children for getting addicted to the games? As each year passes, video games keep getting progressively more addictive, capturing younger audiences and turning them to zombies furiously pushing buttons in their virtual worlds. Although it is not really a crime to have children play video games, a certain balance between video games and physical play should be achieved especially nowadays where food items are not as fat-free as people would want them to be.

Video gaming is quite easy to fall into. There are simply too many addictive video games out there and so many easy ways for children to get their hands on them. Companies such as Sony and Microsoft have invested millions of dollars in making their next generation game consoles the ingredients to catch any child’s attention and keep it for a very long period of time. Video games that are presented in high definition with very attractive story lines coupled with a time requirement of over 5 hours to complete, which makes a very lethal combination.

It takes a decent amount of activity to burn off calories even for children who have efficient bodies. Because video games require very little physical activity, the calories remain unburned, leading to being overweight and worse, obesity.

Some video game companies promote physical activities though, which can help prevent the connection between video gaming and childhood obesity. Well known video game giant Nintendo for example, has the Nintendo wii. This next generation console combines video gaming and physical activity through a motion activated input method. Video games are played by doing certain movements instead of pressing buttons which seamlessly gets a bit of physical activities into the otherwise stationary experiences. The console promotes sport oriented titles that require players to swing, hit, punch, jump and run as they would in an actual sport. This is a great way to bridge the gaps associated with video games and fitness.

Although video games are excellent in keeping children preoccupied, they should not be used as virtual baby sitters. Physical play is very important for children especially because it helps them develop parts of their body essential for survival. Parents should know how to regulate playing time so that balance could be achieved. Children should only be allowed a certain amount of playing time with video games so they can find other means of entertainment such as sports. Too much time with video games does not only cause children to become overweight, it could even hamper them from developing very important social skills or could lead to diseases that are related to obesity.

Horse Riding Exercises – Circles and Bends

Every horse riding exercise is based on the circle exercise. Circles help the horse to be able to bend equally in each direction, and this also helps the horse maintain straightness.

Circles are a very important part of any dressage test – a dressage test at all levels will include combinations of circles of varying sizes, at different paces and in different parts of the arena.

When a horse walks a circle he bends his body to match the curvature of the circle – this is called the correct degree of bend. It is important when asking for a circle that the rider imagines a circle drawn on the ground, and tries to follow it. The horse must not lean to the outside and make the circle too wide, or drift in, and make the circle smaller. By practicing these bends the horse becomes more supple.

Most horses find one direction of bend easier than the other. These horse riding exercises are a great way to even up the horses muscles.

The first circle exercise you will be asked to do is a 20m circle. This basically splits the 40m arena into 2, with the start of the circle at letter A or C, as below, and the mid point of the circle crossing through the imaginary letter X in the centre.

A 15m circle should take you five metres inside of X. It is a tighter circle, and will ask for more bend from your horse.

The smaller circle is the 10m, which will use up one quarter of the arena.

The circle exercises can be performed anywhere in the school – you may be asked for a 20m from A, C, E or B. 20m circles from B or E will take you from one side of the school to the other.

In beginner lessons riders will usually ride a circle as a group, or the instructor will tell you which letter to start from. In more advanced lessons riders may be working in open file, and the instructor will ask all riders to work a circle wherever they choose. In these lessons it is important to remember your school etiquette, and if you are going large (riding round the outside of the arena) you should ‘give way’ to the horse and rider completing a circle, and let them back onto the track in front of you.

In your first lessons you will walk or trot circle horse riding exercises. Later on you will perform canter circles. This is an excellent way of improving your balance.

Circles in the Dressage Test

Diaper Rash Home Remedy – 4 Steps That Work Every Time

All babies seem to experience some degree of diaper rash. The good news is

that it’s easy to treat using my simple diaper rash home remedy.

Before I discuss my diaper rash home remedy, lets first talk about ways to

prevent this type of rash in the first place. Most rashes are caused by extended

contact with the baby’s stool (bacteria) and urine (acid). So the best way to

prevent diaper rash is simple common sense — keep your baby’s little bottom

clean, dry, and change their diaper frequently.

Even with the best prevention practices, you’ll still see your fair share of

diaper rash. During these times, you could use commercial diaper rash product

or you could use my favorite diaper rash home remedy. This simple trick has

worked wonders for me. I’m sure it will work for you too!

First, when your baby is experiencing diaper rash, don’t use

wet wipes. Not even the ones that claim to be alcohol free. Just use warm water

to wet a paper towel. Clean the entire area (from belly button to mid thigh).

Second, dry your baby’s bottom using your hair dryer. I know

this sounds strange but your baby is sure to love it. Just make sure you set

the dryer to low heat and don’t get the dryer too close.

Third, wipe the infected areas with liquid Maalox. Maalox

was designed to naturalize the acid it your stomach so it makes sense that it

will naturalize the acid your baby’s stool and urine too.

Forth, before putting a new diaper on, sprinkle corn starch

all over the infected parts. I recommend putting the corn start in a large salt

or pepper shaker to make this easier.

Give it a shot… it worked for all three of my children and I’m confident

it will work for you too.

Do You Have Scalp Psoriasis Symptoms Or is it Just Dandruff?

It is often difficult to tell the difference between scalp psoriasis and dandruff. This is because both share similar symptoms such as itchy scalp and white flakes of dead skin cells. However, there is a difference between these two scalp problems and it’s important to know the difference in order to seek the correct treatment.

The first thing to note is that psoriasis may be the underlying cause of dandruff. Psoriasis is thought to be caused by immune system and a genetic predisposition to psoriasis. Quite often if a member of your family has psoriasis, you may have inherited the genes. However, not all people who have the psoriasis genes go on to develop psoriasis. People of any age can get psoriasis: children, teenagers, adults and older people. Psoriasis tends to affect males and females equally.

As mentioned, both scalp psoriasis and dandruff can cause similar symptoms. Scalp psoriasis can be triggered off by anything from cuts, abrasions, scratches and even sunburn. More often than not a flare up will happen in winter: the skin becomes flaky and dry because of a lack of natural sunlight. With scalp psoriasis, the patches are commonly seen on the back of the head but can be seen on other areas of the scalp or even cover the entire scalp. The psoriasis may not be confined just to the scalp. Scaly, silvery patches may appear on areas such as elbows, knees, lower back, groin and other body folds.

Dandruff, on the other hand, is primarily caused by naturally occurring fungus, the Malassezia yeast that feeds on the natural oils of the skin. This causes the skin to shed more quickly and to itch. Other possible causes of dandruff include not brushing hair regularly, not enough shampooing, dry skin, diet and stress. Mild dandruff often occurs after puberty, usually between 20-30 years, and tends to affect more men than women.

The treatments for both scalp psoriasis and dandruff tend to be similar. Treatments include using shampoos that contain coal tar and salicyclic acid or topical steroid creams to reduce inflammation. Since dandruff is caused by fungus, using an anti-fungal shampoo to inhibit the growth of the fungi usually does the trick.

The difference between scalp psoriasis and dandruff is that scalp psoriasis may be more resistant to regular treatment. If specific shampoos or steroid creams do not work, then your physician may recommend exposure to ultraviolet light to help the skin repair itself. If this doesn’t work, then oral retinoids may be prescribed, but usually as a last resort.

Now you know that even though scalp psoriasis and dandruff look similar in appearance, there are different causes which may require slightly different treatments.

Toenail Fungus – How To Treat Toenail Fungus

How to treat toenail  fungus  when your toenails are the most common breed of fungal infections? While it is common, toenail  fungus  it is not really that easy to get rid of. Everywhere you go,  fungi  is present, and they can render other bad results on your body as well.

Take the toenail, for instance. When it is infected, the nails will appear thick and dull. Sooner or later, it will become breakable and will lead to the loss of your toenail. Not only does it look absolutely unpleasing. It has a stinking smell due to the  fungus  that has infected the toenail.

Make sure you wear breathable shoes when going out and always wash your feet and dry them really good. Sharing your wash cloths and towels are not recommended, because wet surfaces easily transfer bacteria.

Also try not to wear nail polish, avoid it because it is one of the main causes of nail infection. Same goes while already infected. ADD or ADHD – What’s the Difference?

Many people wonder about the difference between ADHD, which is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and ADD. which is Attention Deficit Disorder. The answer is that they are variations of the same condition. And it’s not necessarily an all-or-none situation; people with Attention Deficit are either relatively more or less hyperactive.

At its root, Attention Deficit Disorder, with or without Hyperactivity, is a disturbance in the control of mental focus and attention. In some ways, the term Attention Deficit Disorder is somewhat of a misnomer because sometimes people will hyperfocus and shut everything else out — think of a teenager over-focused on a video game. So, the condition should probably be referred to as Attention Modulation Disorder (but it isn’t!).

It is typical for adults to have the more inattentive and less hyperactive type, which accounts for it going unrecognized into adulthood. Those with a lot of hyperactivity tend to be identified in childhood because it is so easily noticed. When prominent hyperactivity exists, associated behavior problems may even result in severe consequences (fighting, suspension from school). In addition, by adulthood, many with ADD have learned to mask or compensate for their struggles, although that increasingly becomes a challenge. Adults with ADD may have quietly been underachievers. They may have taken jobs where ADD is less of an obstacle. Sometimes it is only when their children are diagnosed that adults recognize they have ADD too.

There are other types of symptoms associated with ADD besides problems with focus, organization, and planning and finishing tasks. For example, Mood symptoms are increasingly recognized as an important component of ADD. ADD might result in depression because of discouragement, low self-esteem, or just because routine things are so effortful. Irritability is also a symptom of ADD, and may stem from the frustration associated with the condition. People with ADD can be impatient, which can also lead to irritability and anger.

Because ADD and ADHD are variations on the same theme, the treatment is essentially the same for both, and might consist of stimulant medication, non-stimulant medication, and/or behavior therapy. The only difference is that a group of medications called the alpha-blockers seem to be helpful more for hyperactivity and irritability rather than attention and focus.
