Pruning Flowers and Shrubs

A most lucrative area of income is pruning of shrubs, hedges, rose bushes and small fruit trees.

Safety is of greatest importance when working on trees and shrubs. If you use a chainsaw, you should be aware of all safety issues, always wear the appropriate safety clothing and never operate a chainsaw without a license.

Pruning Tools

Secateurs: Bypass types are best since they do not crush wood as much as the anvil types. Buy a robust pair that is comfortable for your hands. Felco are the best, but also one of the most expensive. Even so, most professional gardeners will not consider using anything but Felco.

Look Felco up on the internet to see their full range. Buying over the internet can work out much cheaper, or buy from a show to get show prices.

Lopper: Again, purchase the bypass types. These are long-handled secateurs that are extremely useful for cutting branches from 1 to about 5 cm in diameter. They save a great amount of time over saws and are also useful for getting into tight places. Many brands are available, including Felco. Make certain you buy a pair with rubber stops between the handles, to lessen work stress. (Incl. in start up package)

Saw: Pruning saws are very worthwhile tools as long as you purchase the correct types and keep them clean & sharp. Buy any of the curved-blade saws, but avoid the bow saw types (extremely difficult to use in tight spots). Pruning saws cut on the pull stroke, and are practical for cutting wood up to about 10cm in diameter. There are many good brands on the market, and many of the folding saws are excellent for all-round use. (Incl. in start up package)

If your customers want hedges cut, invest in a good 2′ stroke hedge cutter. Buy the best you can and keep them well maintained and they will last for many years.

Pruning Principles

A healthy plant will wound over best without any additional treatments of a pruning heal paint. These, even though some may be anti-bacterial, have gone out of fashion and the thinking now is to let nature heal the plant. Some schools of thought say they can seal disease in. Often when you prune, the removal of   growth  from the top of the plant will stimulate  growth  either from the base or from buds lower down on the branches. This is all to do with apical dominance which you will learn about on your Hadlow training course. In most cases this is advantageous, as it gives the full shape homeowners wish.

With some plants like fruit trees this can be a problem, since undesirable watershoots grow from the base of the pruning cuts, making the plant even more difficult to manage. Whenever you prune, consider the  growth  that the pruning will stimulate and prune for next year?s  growth  – not just for today.

The main pruning rule is to prune after flowering, as the plant will be able to put on  new   growth  to flower on next year. BUT DO NOT USE THIS RULE WITHOUT CHECKING THE PLANT.

You must be very careful to check what plant it is you are pruning as some plants flower on the previous years  growth  and some on the same year or even on two year old wood.

There is no loss of face in keeping a pruning book in the van and checking before you prune, only fools would not do this. One of the best gardeners I know always carries the RHS pruning guide in his van.

Some plants require pruning more than once a year like roses and wisteria.

Remember that if you do not check when and how the plant can and should be pruned you may cause the plant to die by bleeding to death or allowing disease to infect the plant. For instance, you should never prune any plant in the Prunus genus in the autumn or winter, only in the summer when in full sap flow. Pruning them in the winter will leave them open to a disease called silver leaf and bacterial canker.

Why prune and types of pruning

As stated above, pruning often stimulates  new   growth  in plants to give more flowers and fruits and to encourage plants to bush out. Also, pruning is very important if dead or diseased wood is present so it can be removed.

Pruning can also be used to reduce plant size when space is limited, and lighten a dense canopy of  growth .

Plants like roses and other flowering plants only flower to produce seed so they can reproduce. When they have flowered they will stop as seed has been produced, so by removing the dead flowers before they start to produce seed they will need to produce more flowers. This dead-heading can prolong flower production for months longer than they would otherwise do.

When you prune make sure your secateurs are sharp as a clean cut heals faster than a ragged one. Also a blunt pair of secateurs may crush the stem and damage the plant.

Abdominal Neoplasm – Discover How This Amazing Natural Herb Can Stop Tumors From Growing!

Many peer-reviewed scientific and medical literature has been written on an amazing herb known for centuries in China and Japan. Western Medicine is now incorporating the incredible Ganoderma lucidum mushroom into adjunctive therapies with great success!

Signs and Symptoms of abdominal neoplasm include:

  • Abdominal bloating
  • Abdominal mass
  • Abdominal bleeding
  • Nausea
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Blood in vomit
  • Blood in stool
  • Jaundice

Pub Med, one of the top leaders in this research has noted that “Reishi” has been documented to stop or prevent certain types of cancers and tumors from growing! The polysaccharides that are found in this unique mushroom have shown to have anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties.

Results of the studies show that:

  • Tumor growth was inhibited.
  • Tumor apoptosis resulted (the cells died)
  • MMP (Mitochondrial Membrane Potential) decreased (the mitochondria’s “skin” thinned, leaving the “energy storehouse” vulnerable and leading to the demise of the mitochondria)
  • Release of cytochrome from the mitochondria into cytosol (this is a big step leading to cell death)
  • Activation of caspase-3 and-9 (which indicates that the tumor cells are losing the battle)

Not only did the Ganoderma “kill” the tumor cells, it boosted the immune system:

  • Increased spleen and thymus indexes (these organs are major players in keeping the body healthy)
  • Lymphocyte proliferation increased (the “good guys” outnumbered the “bad guys”)
  • Concentrations of tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-2 increased (The body is fighting off tumor cells like crazy)
  • Increased host immune response (this indicates a very potent anti-tumor activity)

Reishi also prevents tumors from growing in the first place. Studies using mice, showed that mice given a Ganoderma “immunization” actually induced antibodies against Lewis lung carcinoma cells! It also reduced tumor-associated inflammatory mediators. So, not only did “Ligzhni” stop tumors, prevent tumors, boost immunity, it also reduced and stopped inflammation!

Too much inflammation leads to all kinds of problems and is the root cause of nearly any disease you can name. The basic idea is: get rid of the inflammation and get rid of the disease!

This miracle herb is healthy and safe for the whole family! Even some families go so far to use it with their pets as well! (Many veterinarians prescribe it for their furry patients).

Reishi comes in a variety of ways, but most notably, it comes in coffees, teas, and hot chocolate. For those who do not enjoy those beverages, or wish to enhance the effects of the Ganoderma often choose the nutraceuticles. Most everyone who tries the toothpaste, soap and lotion swears by the positive effects it makes on their health.

The nutraceuticles come in three varieties:

  • Gl is the “body” of the plant. It generally works on the entire body.
  • Mycelium is the “root” of the plant. It has properties that targets the brain and the central nervous system. Anything “nerve” or “brain” related is improved. Memory, concentration, lessens anxiety, improves coordination, diseases such as MS and Parkinson’s have been documented to improve.
  • Spores: This is the rocket fuel of Ganoderma. The spores are 17x more potent than the “body” of the plant.

To find out more about Ganoderma and how to make the best choices in choosing this King of the Herbs, you need to go to the information provided below. Do this today! You will be given information that can literally change your life for much better and very quickly!

Cold Sore Treatment: The Best Cure for Cold Sores

It is not easy finding good treatment for cold sores which is a very irritating and humiliating. There are a number of medications in the market and particularly online and while some are good, others are not as effective as they claim to be. A major factor in cold sore treatment and finding the best cure for the condition is dependent on the stage at which your condition has advanced to when the treatment has commenced. Most people who have had the problem are aware of the fact that it is always better to start treatment as early as possible and as soon as they become aware that the condition has developed.

The moment the blisters begin to occur you might find that the condition is quite problematic if you are not applying the correct treatment. It helps to know which cold sore medication is the right one for your specific condition. Instead of trying all the available bad sore treatments in the market, it would be better to get important hits that can help you find the best cures. Some of the best medications have approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). There is Abreva which is an over the counter medicine with approval from the FDA and there is also Zovirax which is a medicine that has received approval from the FDA. There is also Denavir, Famvir and Valacylovir.

Abreva is the only over the counter drug that has been authorized by the FDA for the purpose of reducing the remedial period and the duration of the cold sore condition. Abreva is composed of docosanol which is a unique and patented active component that aids in the preservation of healthy cells from the bad sore contamination. Abreva has been certified as safe and children over twelve years and older as well as adults can apply it.

Denavir is FDA certified in the treatment of repetitive cold sores conditions. Beginning medication inside an hour of the infection will make the medication very effective. Denavir also reduces the period of time for the viral exfoliation. Early application of the medication Denavir will provide people suffering from cold sores great advantages although there are still improvements when the medication is commenced subsequent to the development of the blisters.

Zorvix is medication that has been given authorization by the FDA for the medication of recurring cold sores. The Zovirax liniment is a prescription that is given to people suffering with herpes cold sores particularly on the faces and lips. The capsules and tablets are prescribed for the purposes of treating other herpes bacterium like genital herpes, shingles and chickenpox.

Famvir has been given legal approval as a medicament for the obliteration or cure of repetitive genital herpes or repetitive bad sore. Nonetheless, Famvir is generally prescribed to medically deal with herpes zoster which is also mostly known as shingles.

The last medicine known as Valacylovir is a drug approved by the FDA for the medication of some herpes infections which such as herpes zoster which is an aching rush that is commonly called shingles, genital herpes and the cold sores herpes that occur on the face and lips. Valacylovir however should not be applied by people who have an immune system that is debilitating and in particular people with HIV infection or people who have recently had a kidney or bone marrow transplant. Valacylovir has the capability of posing serious side effect for people that could even cause death.

Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Tuberosa)

Asclepias tuberosa, a perennial herb indigenous to North America from South Ontario and Minnesota to New York, south to Florida and also in Colorado. Discovered growing in dry wide open areas, along roadsides and grassy locations.

The extremely colorful butterfly weed can be a butterfly magnetic field, luring numerous types of butterflies to its vibrant flowers. Monarch butterfly caterpillar feast upon its leaves however rarely damaging this indigenous plant. It’s turtle-like to come out early in the year, therefore you need to tag its area to prevent unintentional digging out prior to new development starts.

Butterfly Weed is a nonwoody milkweed that’s indigenous to America, and in contrast to additional milkweeds, it doesn’t make a milky, latex like sap. It’s a good looking, fleshy-rooted perennial that could develop to a size of 3 ft as well as has stunning groupings of deep yellow-colored and orange blossoms. The plant is delicate and hard to grow and grows fastest within dry, sandy, neutral to acid soil in complete sunlight, however when grown, butterfly weed doesn’t like being disrupted and favors very good peat moss soil.

For seed collection, observe plants carefully for seedpods at the end of summer or early fall. Let seeds to totally mature prior to gathering seed to establish brand new plants in an additional area. A lengthy pod is created that contains countless seeds along with tufts of long, smooth hairs to help spread in the wind.

Butterfly weed also is a really appealing landscaping plant on its own, even when a person is not enthusiastic about growing a butterfly flowerbed. It’s also deer-resistant. Whenever plant centers and seed businesses are not selling it as being the butterfly plant, the most well-liked name appears to be, butterfly flower. The explanation seems to be that, if individuals are being asked to pay for something, it does not seem to be wise to promote it as being a weed. But like a kind of milkweed, that is precisely what it is and also the butterflies won’t mind a bit! Actually, they are instead partial to weeds.

It’ll succeed in dry circumstances, nevertheless it doesn’t contend with surface rooted trees. Aphids can generate problems around the stems and sprouts, but could be managed manually cleaning the plants along with soap or even oil. Butterfly weed is a good option for field plantings and naturalized plants.

Its name is due to the butterflies which are drawn to the plant by its color as well as massive manufacture of nectar. It’s also the larval food plant with the Monarch and Queen butterflies.

Cultivation of the butterfly weed is simple, could be transplanted in autumn or developed from seed, favors a well-drained light, sandy, humus abundant or peaty soil in the sun-drenched placement.

3 Asthma Breathing Quick Tricks

Asthmatic breathing can be really tough and scary to navigate. Here are 3 simple quick tricks to help your challenged breathing let go of you. These quick tricks open up the whole breathing mechanics so your breath has more space and less pressure so it can do a better job of supporting you. As always, be sure you have immediate access to your life-saving inhaler as a back-up measure. That’s really important.

Asthma Breathing Quick Trick One: Move your attention from the in-breath to the out-breath. This sounds easy and it is when your breathing is not challenging. It’s tougher when you’re in the midst of gasping for air. That’s part of why this works so well. It’s a mental trick to help you move your attention onto your out-going breath. All you have to do is notice the out-breath more. I do this by “ignoring” my in-breath and putting my attention gently on the out-breath. There is NO forcing. Forcing or pushing is counter-productive and makes things worse, not better. Gentle wins the race every time.

Asthma Breathing Quick Trick Two: Drill a hole in the tip of your nose! Not really, of course, but in your imagination. You know where your nostrils are; they are on the “underside” of your nose. You can feel the air go in and out of them easily, right? Imagine you’ve drilled a hole the diameter of a drinking straw at the very tip of your nose. It’s not on top, not on the bottom, but a the very tip. Now close your mouth and GENTLY breathe (without any push or forcing) through the “new hole” in your nose. Remind yourself NOT to force this. The idea is to LET or ALLOW the air to come in and out by itself. You’ll notice a rapid reduction in anxiety and an increase in breathing ease in a short time. When you’ve had enough of this idea just let it go. The idea is not to breathe like this forever, it’s to focus your mind and teach your body the mechanics of “gentle” with this mental image.

Asthma Breathing Quick Trick Three: For this one make an agreement with yourself that you won’t inflate your lungs the full amount and won’t deflate them the full amount either. You’ll “under do” this one for best results. Imagine your next few breaths go into your chest to the bottom of your ribs and gently inflate the ribs SIDEWAYS instead of forward and back. The feeling is you’re breathing East to West or side to side, however it’s easier for you to conceptualize. I feel the breath come in, drop to my lowermost ribs and then gently push/expand my ribs apart sideways so I feel WIDER. That’s the idea. Try it a few times to get the knack of it. You’ll get more air in more easily with part of your chest you seldom use. Don’t overdo this one either. Do a few breaths and leave it go until tomorrow or the day after. This is not exercise. Gentle wins–always. The next few times you practice this one monitor your shoulders and your lower back. Avoid the temptation to lift the shoulders and/or to arch your lower back. It’s just a sideways glide/opening of your ribs. Keep it simple, gentle and pleasant.

Effects of Smoking – A Closer Look at Smoking Death Statistics

I realize that there are articles and information all over the place about smoking death statistics. However, I thought I would update you and put them all in one article.

Everyone is aware that smoking causes cancer and lung disease, but were you aware that smoking does a lot more.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO):

o Every 8 seconds someone dies from tobacco use. Smoking related diseases kill 1 in 10 adults globally, or cause 4 million deaths. By the year 2030, if current trends continue, smoking will kill 1 in 6 people.

o About 12 times more British people have died from smoking than from World War II. Staggering.

o Cigarettes cause more than 1 in 5 American deaths.

o Half of the long-term smokers will die from tobacco and every cigarette that you smoke cuts at least 5 minutes off of your life expectancy. That is about the time it takes for you to smoke it.

o Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of death and premature death. It is a prime factor in heart disease, stroke, and chronic lung disease. It can also cause cancer, which affects many parts of the body.

o At least ¼ of all deaths from heart diseases and about ¾ of the world’s chronic   bronchitis  are related to smoking.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death and was among the first diseases causally linked to smoking. Lung cancer is obviously one of the major diseases attributed to smoking. But, did you know that smoking also causes cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, bladder, stomach, and even the cervix, kidneys, and pancreas. It’s true.

Other statistics show:

o Compared to non-smokers, men who smoke are about 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer and women who smoke are 13 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Smoking causes about 90 percent of lung cancer deaths in men and 80 percent in women.

o In 2003, an estimated 171,900 new cases of lung cancer occurred and approximately 157,200 people died from lung cancer.

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and the leading cause of death by smoking. More than 61 million Americans suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and all of these can be attributed to smoking. More than 2600 Americans die every day because of cardiovascular diseases, that is about 1 death every 33 seconds. Unbelievable.

Smoking related coronary heart disease may contribute to congestive heart failure. An estimated 4.6 million Americans have congestive heart failure and 43,000 die from it each year.

Smoking is related to chronic coughing and wheezing among adults. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, resulting in 118,000 deaths. More than 90 percent of these deaths were attributed to smoking.

And the most startling statistics:

o Among young teens (ages 13-15), about 1 in 5 smokes worldwide.

o Between 80,000-100,000 children worldwide start smoking every day and evidence shows that around 50 percent of those who start smoking as an adolescent go on to smoke 15 to 20 years.

All of these smoking death statistics are unbelievable. Especially when all you have to do to change them is to quit smoking. I realize it is a very hard thing to do, but a happier, healthier, and longer life is waiting for you. Just quit!! Do it!!

How To Diagnose Shoulder Injuries

Finding the right shoulder surgeon to properly diagnose and treat your shoulder pain and discomfort can be intimidating. It is important before going to see a doctor that you keep track of your symptoms and take note of any pain you are experiencing.

Your pain could be coming from one of many different types of shoulder problems, including arthritis, fractures, dislocations, or joint or ligament injuries. Shoulder injuries can result in symptoms ranging anywhere from stiffness, instability, mild to severe discomfort, or extreme pain and immobility.

Possible shoulder conditions may include:

> Sprains

> Strains

> Torn Ligaments

> Shoulder Arthritis

> Joint inflammation

> Conditioning issues

> Fractures

> Anatomical alignment issues

> Glenoid Labrum Tears

> Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

> SLAP Tear

Self Diagnosis:

Rotator Cuff

Your shoulder hurts, particularly when doing overhead activities; pain wakes you from sleep when you roll over on that side; you think you remember falling on it or injuring it in some way. An injury to the rotator cuff affects the muscles and tendons that elevate, rotate, and stabilize the arm. The diagnosis can be made from a physical examination, x-rays, and confirmed by an MRI. Treatment includes exercise and rehabilitation if the rotator cuff is only injured, rather than torn or cut off. In these cases, surgery is required as an arthroscopic approach.

AC Joint

In the case of an AC (acromioclavicular joint) joint issue, you can confirm that you fell on your shoulder, and there is now a physical bump present. Depending on the size of the bump and the stability of it, the shoulder can receive various treatments. Taping the shoulder can lead to better healing and significant pain relief.

Dislocated Shoulder

A dislocated shoulder of the anterior is often a tear of the glenohumeral ligament, the key stabilizer for the shoulder. For an athletic person, this can often be taken care of by outpatient arthroscopic techniques. For people who dislocate their dominant arm, and are playing sports, repairing the ligament is especially important. Successful diagnosis may include physical examination, x-rays, and confirmed by an MRI ordered by a shoulder surgeon.

This type of shoulder issue causes pain during overhead activities, but probably does not wake the patient from sleep. Bursitis is a syndrome where the bursa along the rotator cuff has become inflamed and irritated. This can be treated by anti-inflammatories and careful exercise. Sometimes, cortisone shots can help reduce inflammation. Diagnosis is made with a careful physical exam. Sometimes, if your surgeon is unsure about a possible injury to the rotator cuff, an MRI can confirm the diagnosis.

AC Joint Arthritis

Arthritis is a very common condition in people experiencing shoulder pain. It is associated with pain that did not begin as a result of injury, and with pain that worsens when the arm is extended above the head. This is a degenerative disease of the joint that worsens as the patient ages. Diagnosis can only be confirmed by a careful physical exam, and an MRI may be utilized to rule out more serious conditions. AC Joint Arthritis is extremely common among persons who use their arms for extended periods of time including constant overhead lifting, weightlifters, or persons who have worked in the construction field for many years. Treatment may include physiotherapy, anti-inflammatories, cortisone injections, and in advanced cases, surgery by a skilled shoulder surgeon.

These are only a few common problems that can occur with the shoulder. Proper diagnosis can really only be achieved by charting your symptoms as they occur and seeking the professional advice of a practicing shoulder surgeon.

What’s A Dislocated Shoulder?

The human body consists of different joints. These joints allow movements that enable you to walk, to move your arms and to do various physical activities. However, too many movements may not be healthy for the joints. If you always use them, the joints can wear out and become unstable.

One example of a commonly used joint in the body is the shoulder joint. It is used when you eat, when you pick up things, when you carry objects and so on. This is the reason why it is also one of the most commonly dislocated parts of the body.

What is a dislocated shoulder and how can you tell if you have it? If you have a dislocated shoulder, it is normal to feel pain at that part of your body. The main reason is because the muscles are affected and most commonly stretched. This is why most people suffering from this problem are not able to move because of extreme soreness. There are also times when dislocated shoulders and other joint problems bring more systemic conditions. Some people feel nausea and vomit because of the condition while others feel weak and experience occasional headaches. To clearly identify the situation, here are some of the things you need to know about determining a dislocated shoulder.

First, you need to look for injuries. Injuries may come in different forms. For example, there could be swelling or bruising along the area. The shoulder is often rounded and smooth. If the appearance has changed, there is a big chance that a problem exists.

Second, you need to check for pain. As mentioned earlier, the most common sign of dislocated shoulder is pain or soreness. If you move the affected area and you feel sudden pain, it is best if you consult with a doctor immediately. You should also avoid moving your shoulders at that point in order not to aggravate the injury.

Third, you need to check for numbness. When bones are dislocated, there is a high possibility that nerves will also be affected. Therefore, some people feel some tingling sensations and numbness. It could also be because of broken blood vessels and loss of blood in the area.

Fourth, you need to undergo x-ray examination. This is the fastest way to confirm whether you have joint problems or not. The x-ray examination results will show you the current condition of your shoulder. You will have to submit the results to your doctor in order to get a reliable explanation about the image.

Shoulder dislocations can be very painful therefore they should be addressed immediately. However, you should never try addressing them yourself. If you try to cure your own joint injury, you might only worsen the condition. You can apply first-aid treatments such as cold compress and slings. Contact a physician immediately to get proper treatment immediately after apply first-aid. Some shoulder dislocations heal over time without extensive treatments. For some, however, surgical operations may be required.

Now that you know what a shoulder dislocation is and how you can diagnose it, it will be easier for you to take necessary measures. If you have any other questions, consult your osteopath, physiotherapist or other health professional.

Ankle Fracture

The structure of the ankle joint

The ankle joint consists of 3 bones uniting.

-The tibia, which is the primary bone of the lower leg, comprises the medial aspect of the anklebone.

-The fibula is a smaller sized bone that parallels the tibia within the lower leg as well as comprises the lateral aspect of the anklebone.

-The distal ends of both the tibia as well as fibula are generally referred to as the malleoli. Collectively they create an arch that is situated upon the talus bone of the foot.

These three bones (tibia, fibula, as well as talus) constitute the bony components of the ankle and its joint

The ankle is really a intricate joint that forms where all these 3 bones get together. The bones of the lower leg, the tibia as well as the fibula, are usually over the joint, and the talus bone is under the joint. Whenever a physician speaks about an ankle joint bone  fracture , they’re generally speaking about a  fractured  tibia or fibula.

Signs & Symptoms of ankle  fracture

Signs and symptoms of ankle  fractures  are typically clear. and are usually as follows:

– Pain is regarded as the the most common complaint.

– Swelling and inflammation often develops all around the ankle joint

– You might notice bruising around the ankle, although it isn’t instantaneous.

– In serious ankle  fractures  you could possibly observe noticeable deformities of bones surrounding the ankle joint

– In the event you injure nerves or blood vessels supplying your foot, you might encounter much more pain together with pale skin on the foot, numbness and tingling, or decreased movement in your foot or toes.

Benefits In Bone Healing’ Clinical Evidences

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) is an electrical instrument used to generate specific kind of magnetic fields that can influence the physiology of the human body. Each magnetic pulse generated by PEMF stimulates a tiny electrical signal in the cells of the body resulting in stimulation of the repair process. PEMF is a non-invasive instrument with established safety. FDA approved devices of PEMF are available for stimulating the process of bone healing.

PEMF and bone

Healing of the injured tissues is a normal process, which does not require outside stimulation in most of the cases. However, healing process of bones is very slow, especially in elderly people and people with diabetes. Almost 8 million fractures are reported to occur in the United States annually; among which 5-10% fractures show delayed healing or incomplete healing.

1 PEMF can be used as an adjuvant physical therapy to fasten the union of the fracture. Beneficial effects of PEMF have also been observed in the healing of soft-tissues (tissue surrounding bone e.g. muscles, tendon, ligament, cartilage); suppression of inflammation, pain relief and facilitating motion in various musculoskeletal disorders. 2 Research work done on PEMF and bone healing US National Library of Medicine, maintained by the National Institute of Health, is a comprehensive online database that stores the research works published in reputed international journals. A search using keyword “PEMF bone” resulted in 159 articles, among which 70 articles were discussing the research commenced on human volunteers. Few important articles are discussed here.

1. Study of PEMF in patients with delay in union of tibial fracture (fracture of leg bone) 3 In this study, 44 patients (average age of 50 years) were involved. The patients were sufferings from delay in tibial fracture healing with conventional plasters. All the patients received PEMF therapy for 3 hours daily. At the end of 36 months, fractures were healed completely in 34 patients (77.4% of total population). The minimum time required for fracture union was 8 months and maximum time was 36 months. Probability of fracture union was higher with longer duration of therapy. The authors concluded that PEMF is an effective therapy for the patients not having fracture healing with conventional plasters.

2. Study of PEMF in cervical fusion 4 Cervical fusion or cervical spinal fusion is a type of surgery that is used to join two adjacent vertebrates for a variety of reasons like neck pain due to compressed cervical nerve root, injury, misalignment of vertebrates, etc. During cervical fusion surgery, a bone graft is attached to the vertebrates, which further facilitates fusion of the two vertebrates. The effect of PEMF therapy on the outcome of cervical fusion was evaluated in 323 patients with neck pain. Among them, PEMF therapy was given to 163 patients and remaining 160 patients did not receive PEMF therapy. After the 6 months from the surgery, more than 83% patients receiving PEMF therapy showed successful fusion; whereas the successful fusion rate in the patients not receiving PEMF therapy was only 68.6%. At the end of 12 months, fusion rate was 92.8% in the PEMF group compared to 86.7% in the non PEMF group. Thus, PEMF was found to be effective in fastening the growth of bone graft used in cervical fusion surgery.

How to Live With Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral   Palsy  is an umbrella term used to describe a group of chronic disorders impairing control of movement that appear in the first few years of life and generally do not worsen over time. The term  cerebral  refers to the brain’s two halves, or hemispheres, and  palsy  describes any disorder that impairs control of body movement. Faulty development or damage to motor areas in the brain disrupts the brain’s ability to adequately control movement and posture.

First thing’s first.  Cerebral   palsy  isn’t a disease or an illness that can be contagious. It is a condition where the muscle movement is affected and will be there throughout a person with  cerebral   palsy’s  life.

Cerebral   Palsy  is caused by a malformation or defect in their brain. And, in most cases, doctors do not know what caused the malformation and will not know how to prevent it if in case they knew what that cause was.

This is a disorder that is acquired at birth where they will have a brain defect while still being in their mother’s stomach, during or just right after birth. Once  Cerebral   Palsy  is detected in the child, it will be there for a lifetime. However, this does not mean that your child will have to suffer a lifetime as well.

Today, there are devices that can assist in the learning process of a child with  cerebral   palsy . There are also special schools where your child with  cerebral   palsy  can attend free of charge.

If you notice that your child is having difficulty in their developmental process, like reaching for toys, walking, sitting and talking, it is very possible that your child has this condition. Diagnosing  Cerebral   Palsy  will be done by observing your child’s motor skills. If there is a delay in the development of these skills, your doctor will suspect that your child has  Cerebral   Palsy .

Living life with  Cerebral   Palsy  can be difficult. But, with proper care and education, you can give your child a more normal life. You have to make extra effort in order for them to cope with living and also be independent in the future.

There are cases where some children with  Cerebral   Palsy  that excels in education. Some have been attending and graduating colleges and some even lives a normal independent life once they become adults.

A multidisciplinary team of health care professionals develops an individualized treatment plan based on the patient’s needs and problems. It is imperative to involve patients, families, teachers, and caregivers in all phases of planning, decision making, and treatment.

When You Need Sciatica Pain Relief

Pain caused by sciatica is felt deep inside the leg and can be incredibly crippling. Sciatica can also cause tingling, numbness or weakness in the leg or a sharp burning feeling all of which are uncomfortable. Achieving sciatica pain relief permanently involves targeting the cause of the sciatica and treating the cause, otherwise pain alleviation may only be temporary.

Sciatica refers to damage or pressure involving the sciatic nerve which is the largest nerve in the body. It runs from the bottom of the spine, through the hip joint, knee and ankle. Damage or pressure on the sciatic nerve can be caused by a variety of reasons and needs to be investigated in order for sciatica pain relief to be obtained on a permanent basis.

Temporary sciatica pain relief can involve taking anti-inflammatory medication or pain killers. In more serious cases cortisone injections may be administered. Placing hot or cold ice packs on the painful area as well resting the affected area may also be recommended to aid in reducing inflammation and help with alleviating pain.

However sciatica, which is a type of neuralgia, is often considered a symptom of a cause. Sciatica can be as a result of many things including piriformis syndrome, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, slipped or herniated disk, tumors, osteoporosis, and pregnancy among others. Many of these causes of sciatica are further caused by other factors. Each of these causes needs to be looked at carefully in order to treat sciatica and help with sciatica pain relief on a more permanent basis if the pain does not ease up.

Often physical therapists can be recommended for sciatica pain relief as they can help with stretches and strengthening exercises that may target some of the sciatica causes. Piriformis syndrome can be relieved by stretching the tense piriformis muscle and strengthening the surrounding gluteal muscles to give the hip area support, taking strain off the piriformis muscle and ultimately the sciatic nerve. When sciatica is caused by back problems such as a herniated disk or spondylolisthesis, strengthening the muscles in the lower back will help relieve any pressure on the sciatic nerve which has been placed on it due to weakness in the back. A herniated disk refers to when a disk in the back has slipped or pushed on to the muscle from straining the back, a sports injury or moving in an unusual way. Spondylolisthesis refers to a vertebra slipping onto another vertebra. Physical therapists may also recommend massaging around the area where the cause of the sciatica is to relieve muscle tension, which may also aid sciatica pain relief.

In more extreme cases of sciatica when the pain can not be kept at bay and someone suffers from it continuously, surgery may be considered as a way to treat the cause of the sciatica. If spinal stenosis is the cause, which refers to a narrowing of the spinal canal, surgery may be a way to physically take pressure off the spinal cord and ultimately the lower back, relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve and promoting sciatica pain relief. Surgery may also be used to physically loosen the pirformis muscle, undoing its hold on the sciatic nerve as well as repairing the vertebra that has slipped onto another vertebra in the case of spondylolisthesis. It may also be a way to remove a possible tumor, which could be pushing on the sciatic nerve. However surgery would be a last resort as a means of alleviating sciatica pain and help with sciatica pain relief.

Sciatica pain relief can be achieved temporarily with painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication as well as hot packs and ice packs. However if the pain increases, it is recommended that you consult your physician immediately to locate the cause of the sciatica and target it to achieve ultimate sciatica pain relief.

How to Stop a Sore Throat at The First Sign

You are just going through your day minding your own business when you get an odd sensation, a feeling in your throat, a tingle, or a tickle. You force a swallow down, trying to push it away, willing it to go away, because you just don’t have time to deal with this right now.

After a moment or two, it’s gone, and you let out a sigh of relief-just a false alarm. Later in the day, that evening, you feel a little run down and notice a raw spot in your throat. That’s when you know you’ve already come down with a sore throat. Is there anything you can do to catch that first sign you felt earlier in the day?

The first sign of the sore throat is that tickle or tingle in your throat. This is your body’s warning signal it has started the battle against the virus (for colds or flu) or bacteria (like strep). This is the time to take action because the virus or bacteria are still on the surface of the throat tissue.

o Gargle with warm salt water. Just dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle. You can make this solution stronger if desired. Do this at least once an hour throughout the day.

o Spray colloidal silver on your throat several times a day. Do this right after you gargle and let it sit on your throat without drinking for about 10 minutes before drinking any liquids. Colloidal silver kills out an impending infection.

o Drink some herbal tea. Any of the following alone or mixed will help fight off a sore throat: slippery elm, sage, mullein and peppermint.

If you catch it at the very beginning, many times you can stop a sore throat in its tracks before it takes hold in the throat tissue.

Acupuncture Meridian Chart

An acupuncture meridian chart is a chart that gives the specific pressure points for specific body parts. This is to ensure that pressure is put onto the correct pressure points. When this is correctly done, the desired effects are achieved. This could be relief from certain pains and aches, diseases, or reversal of certain conditions.

The body of a person has twelve meridian points. These can be described as the main doorways to a human body. This means that there are acupuncture meridian charts for each and every specific part of the body. some of them are listed below.

The lung meridian, The large intestine meridian, the stomach meridian, the spleen meridian, urinary bladder meridian, gall bladder meridian, and many others. When pressure is applied to any of these meridians, the specific diseases or disorders related to various meridians are cured. This makes acupuncture meridian charts an important tool for acupuncturists. They help the practitioners to know the exact point to apply needle pressure depending on the disease or complication being treated.

The lung meridian has eleven points according to this chart. When needle pressure is applied to these points, relief from respiratory problems such as cough, asthma,   tonsillitis  and many others. The large intestine meridian has twenty points. When appropriate needle pressure is applied to these points, diseases such as back pain, shoulder pain, sore throat and others can be cured. With the aid of acupuncture charts, various diseases and disorders can be cured. this makes this kind of charts very beneficial to both the practitioners and patients alike. They both achieve the results that they desire.

Fighting Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome is a condition that was only identified about 20 years ago. It’s a condition many people have but few understand. Even the experts debate its existence. But most would agree that the risk factors that make up Metabolic Syndrome or Syndrome-X as it’s sometimes called are very real and very serious. According to the American Heart Association some 47 million people have it. That amounts to one in six people.

It’s new, it’s common, and it has a scary name. So what is it? In truth, Metabolic Syndrome (Syndrome-X) is not a really a disease, it’s a group of risk factors. None of these risk factors alone are good news, but when combined they are indeed scary. They are high blood pressure, high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and abdominal fat. Among other things they can double your risk of blood vessel and heart disease and increase your risk of diabetes by five times.

Risk Factors for Metabolic Syndrome

According to the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, there are five risk factors that make up metabolic syndrome. Being diagnosed with at least three of these risks factors means you have Metabolic Syndrome.

Large Waist Size

For men: 40 inches or larger

For women: 35 inches or larger

Cholesterol: High Triglycerides

Either 150 mg/dL or higher

or Using a cholesterol medicine

Cholesterol: Low Good Cholesterol (HDL)

For men: Less than 40 mg/dL

For women: Less than 50 mg/dL

or Using a cholesterol medicine

High Blood Pressure

Either Having blood pressure of 130/85 mm Hg or greater

or Using a high blood pressure medicine

Blood Sugar: High Fasting Glucose Level

100 mg/dL or higher

Since it’s a collection of risk factors rather than a disease, the experts aren’t exactly sure how it develops. They have however identified some risk factors. These include Insulin resistance, unhealthy lifestyle, obesity (particularly in the abdominal area), and hormonal imbalance.

Even though Syndrome-X is becoming more common, there is good news. It can be controlled by making lifestyle changes.

Yes, these are the very same changes we’re always speaking of. First off you need to eat healthy. No surprise there. Second you need to become more active. You don’t need to go over-board, just do something you enjoy. If nothing else, walking is a great way to burn some calories and unlike some activities it won’t interfere with that most important of exercises. Yep, you guessed it, strength training.

Strength training increases lean tissue and this allows for more storage of glucose and greater glucose uptake therefore helping to lower blood sugar.

Strength training has been shown in numerous studies to decrease peripheral insulin resistance. This has huge implications for sufferers of Syndrome-X and type 2 diabetes. Ivy (1996) showed that improvements in insulin resistance and glucose tolerance with strength training are highly related to an increased skeletal muscle insulin action. Subjects undergoing resistance training improved many of the abnormalities associated with this metabolic syndrome: namely glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia, abdominal adiposity, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia, Castaneda (2002).

There is also evidence that strength training increases HDL cholesterol in normal subjects and lowers triglyceride and LDL levels in type 2 diabetics Willey (2003). In addition strength training has been shown to reduce visceral fat deposition by way of enhanced basal metabolism and activity levels while counteracting age and disease related muscle wasting.

Strength training improves insulin sensitivity and glycemic control, and has positive effects on hypertension and lipid profiles Willey (2003).

The risk factors that make up Metabolic Syndrome / Syndrome-X are real, but we have an arsenal of weapons at our disposal. Lifestyle changes including diet, increased calorie expenditure and of course, strength training. It’s a battle we can win.
