Are You a Fracture Waiting to Happen?

When it comes to osteoporosis, do you know the score? If you or a loved one is over 45, then you should know what a “DEXA” is, and how to read one.

It’s important to understand that most people who have osteoporosis won’t ever know it before fracturing a bone. Not even an x-ray done at your doctor’s office is helpful, since a person would need to lose 30-50% of their bone density before it could be detected with a normal x-ray.

The test that is used to check your bone density, and determine if you are at risk for fracture, is called a DEXA. It stands for Dual Energy X-ray Absortiomety. The test will produce two scores that are used to determine your risk.

DEXA scores can be confusing, but they don’t have to be. If you do an internet search asking how to interpret them you’ll end up reading about complicated mathematical formulas, conversions and units of density. In this post I am going to break it down very simply, and no math knowledge is needed. More importantly, I will explain what the sores actually mean, and why you should care.

The test will give you 2 scores. They are called the “T-Score” and the “Z-Score”. Both scores are important, but for completely different reasons.

The T-Score: The T-score compares your bone density to the average density of a 30-year-old person of the same sex. The score will be a positive number, or a negative number. A positive numbers means your density is greater than the average 30-year- old (good). A negative score means your bone density is less than the average 30-year-old (bad). A score with a negative number less than -1 but greater than -2.5 means you have osteopenia, which is a level of bone density lower than normal, but not low enough to be classified as osteoporosis. A score of -2.5 or lower is classified as Osteoporosis. In other words, this test answers the question: Do you have osteoporosis, yes or no.

What you probably don’t realize is that this information (do you have osteoporosis, yes or no) isn’t enough information for your doctor to make a clinical decision. For many people osteoporosis is a natural part of aging, so more information is needed before making any treatment decisions. Specifically, is it something that needs to be investigated further? Is there some sinister cause for this osteoporosis, or is it “normal?” This is where the Z-Score comes in.

The Z-Score: The Z-Score compares your bone density to the average density of someone your same age and sex. It compares you to your peers. You see, there are things other than aging that cause osteoporosis. Very serious conditions such as certain types of cancer, alcoholism, hemolytic anemia, hyperthyroidism, etc., can cause a decrease in bone density that could be confused with the normal aging process. By comparing you to your peers it can be determined that your lack of bone density is average, which means it is probably due to aging, or it is more than average, which means it may be a symptom of some other condition or disease.

This is why there are 2 scores. This way your doctor can say:

“Yes, you have a significant reduction in bone density (T-Score), and an increased chance for fracture, but it is average for your age and sex.”(Z-Score)

OR

“Yes, you have a significant reduction in bone density (T-Score), and an increased chance of fracture, and the reduction in bone density is significantly greater than average for your age and sex (Z-Score), and more tests need to be done to find out what is causing it.”

There are 2 things that I want you to learn from this post.

1. If someone asks you if you have osteoporosis, and you have never had a DEXA, the correct answer would be “I don’t know.”

2. Understand how to read the scores, and what they mean, so you can ask your doctor the correct questions. You should know when you should be concerned, because your health is your responsibility.

A later post will discuss what you can do to prevent osteoporosis. You can have a high T-Score even as you age, and a Z-Score that is significantly better than your peers, a dramatically reduced chance of fracture, and still be happy and active into the last years of your life. You can be healthier than your peers, and stay young while your friends get old.

High School Sports Injuries – Growth Plate Fractures

Did you know that the millions of high school athletes experience injuries at roughly the same rate that professional athletes do? The difference is that the most common injuries tend to be different for the younger athletes. One of the most prevalent ones among high school participants in sports are growth plate injuries.

In the long bones of that are still growing in both children and adolescents, areas of tissue exist close to their ends. These particular areas are termed as “growth plates.” Each long bone in humans has a minimum of a pair of growth plates. That includes one at either end of the bone. As adolescents complete their physical growth, solid bone replaces the closed growth plates which are more prone to injury.

Certain injuries that would merely cause sprains in adult athletes often result in growth plate injuries ( fractures ) among high school athletes. That includes sports in which certain muscle groups are overused, such as in baseball or gymnastics. For instance, baseball pitchers are constantly using their arm muscles to perfect their masterpiece pitches, while gymnasts are continually giving their arm muscles a workout while practicing on the uneven bars. Such injuries also frequently occur due to full-contact sports, such as basketball and football. Besides competitive sports, recreational activities and falls are also common causes.

While different treatments for growth plate injuries are available, the treatment(s) that a physician uses depends on the variety of  fracture  that the teenager has experienced. The key is that the athlete should undergo treatment as soon as possible! The prescribed treatment usually includes a blend of different remedies, including:

  • Cast
  • Exercises
  • Manipulation
  • Splint
  • Surgery
  • X-rays

The good news is that the vast majority of these types of injuries don’t cause any long-term difficulties for the teenager. Sometimes the bone will stop growing, causing one leg or arm to be slightly shorter than the other limb. In other instances a limb could become curved.

To improve the treatment of growth plate injuries, researchers are developing more effective ways to treat such  fractures . That includes the use of gene therapy, drugs that safeguard the growth plates during treatments that involve radiation, and developing methods to help damaged muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones to grow again.

What can teen athletes do to prevent growth plate injuries? Some key steps to take include doing enough physical conditioning for a certain sport, using athletic equipment properly, wearing proper protective equipment for a sport, doing warm-ups before practices and games, and of course-playing by the rules.

Unfortunately, injuries are a part of sports, including high school sports. When teens decide to participate in such sports, they should be prepared to take the risks involved in such activities. Taking the right precautions and using the right treatments can help to get the athlete back on the court, field, or rink.

Types of and Causes of Cerebral Palsy

 Cerebral   palsy  is not a disease it is a condition.  Cerebral  refers to the brain and  palsy  means weakness or lack of muscle control. In addition,  cerebral   palsy  is not a single problem, but a complex disease in which virtually all brain cell types could need repair. Approximately 90 percent of all cases are caused by brain injury during the prenatal period (before labor begins). This condition is caused by damage to brain cells that control the movement of muscles. A person with  cerebral   palsy  can have mild to severe physical disabilities. There are varying degrees of therapies depending on the degree of condition. However, just because a person has  cerebral   palsy , it does not mean they will have other disabilities.

Causes and Risks

Recent studies suggest that  cerebral   palsy  is mostly due to factors affecting the brain before birth. In about 70 percent of cases,  cerebral   palsy  results from events occurring before birth that can disrupt normal development of the brain. This condition is caused by an injury to the brain during pregnancy, at birth, or shortly after birth. The symptoms are usually not noticeable at birth. It was previously assumed that it was caused by fetal distress, such as a lack of oxygen, during the birth process. However, lack of oxygen at birth has not been shown to be the major cause. The motor deficits of babies are usually unrecognizable before 4-6 months of age.

A preemie’s risk of  cerebral   palsy  is much higher than that of a full-term baby. In addition, exposure to herpes group B viruses was associated with a two-fold increase in risk. Reproductive/urinary tract infections also may increase the risk in a preterm delivery. Preemie’s are already at risk for  cerebral   palsy  and account for approximately one-third of the cases. Adequate prenatal care may reduce the risk of the unborn baby.

Viral infections, lead poisoning, or head injuries that occur early in life can result in acquired  cerebral   palsy , a less common condition. Spastic  cerebral   palsy , the most common type, is a condition in which there is too much muscle tone. However,  cerebral   palsy  is NOT a progressive condition, meaning that it does not worsen over time.  Cerebral   palsy  generally is a long-lasting (chronic) condition.

There are roughly 8,000 infants born with this condition each year and some 1,200-1,500 preschool age children acquire  cerebral   palsy  annually. Most children are diagnosed by age 5. Despite significant improvements in obstetric and neonatal care in recent years, the incidence of  cerebral   palsy  has not decreased.

Types

Athetoid  cerebral   palsy  affects the ability to control muscles, leading to involuntary and uncontrolled movements in the affected muscles

Spastic  cerebral   palsy  is the most common type of  cerebral   palsy . Approximately 60 percent of all individuals with  cerebral   palsy  have spasticity that is characterized by tense, contracted muscles. Doctors will often describe which type of spastic  cerebral   palsy  a patient has, based on which limbs are affected.

Ataxic  cerebral   palsy  affects the sense of balance and depth perception. Children who suffer from ataxic  cerebral   palsy  can be described as being very shaky and unsteady.

Symptoms

Children with  cerebral   palsy  may develop eating difficulties, bladder and bowel control problems, breathing problems, and learning disabilities. Children with  cerebral   palsy  have limited use of their arms due to the dysfunction of their neural motor control and stiffness of their joints. Dysarthria is common in people with  cerebral   palsy , due to problems involving the muscles that control speech and mastication. Although  Cerebral   Palsy  is a permanent condition, as a person learns and grows and practices skills, more control over movement may be achieved.

Treatment

Treatment of  cerebral   palsy  requires a team of specialists to help maximize and coordinate movement, minimize discomfort and pain, and prevent long-term complications. Because the symptoms of  cerebral   palsy  can cause behavioral and emotional problems, many children benefit from counseling or behavior therapy. It is also not “curable” in the accepted sense, although education, therapy, and applied technology can help persons with  cerebral   palsy  lead productive lives.

The goal of drug therapy is to reduce the effects and prevent complications. Physical, speech, and occupational therapy along with counseling today are employed to help people lead healthy, productive lives. Most children with  cerebral   palsy  benefit from early and regular physical and occupational therapy. In addition, education, therapy, and applied technology can help persons with  cerebral   palsy  lead productive lives.

Conclusion

With early and ongoing treatment, the disabilities associated with  cerebral   palsy  can be reduced. People living with  cerebral   palsy  are usually able to live independently in the community, with or without assistance. With support and treatment, though, many people with  cerebral   palsy  can live healthy, happy lives.

Incomplete spinal cord injuries may affect one arm, one leg, or one side of the body, leaving the other intact. These injuries are classified as Anterior Cord Syndrome, Central Cord Syndrome, or Brown-Sequard Syndrome, all of which can result in significant loss of movement and sensation. Brown-Sequard Syndrome occurs as a result of a puncture wound.

Spinal cord injuries also often bring with them respiratory problems, which may necessitate the use of a ventilator, as well as bladder and bowel control issues. These injuries can affect fertility, blood pressure, the ability to control body temperature, and even perspiration. They can cause spasticity, muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, gall stones, and kidney stones as well.

When these discs become compressed, back pain and impairment of movement is the result. A car accident, for example, can cause one or more discs to move out of their proper place. This is often called a “slipped disc” and, while not serious, can be difficult to treat.

· Next, put toothpaste on it overnight.

· After that dab it with milk.

· In 20 minutes use rubbing alcohol on it.

· In 30 minutes cover it with finger nail polish remover.

· Finally crush a clove of garlic and hold it to the sore. (Yes, it stings.)

· By this time the sore is gone and you can cover the redness with lip stick.

Another example from a real world sufferer:

· Apply bleach with a cotton ball. (Yes, it burns.)

· Then hold a wet green tea bag on the site.

· Next soak a Centrum multi-vitamin tablet, crush it into paste and apply for 20 minutes.

· Then you end up with a scab so put some cream on it.

Do Cold Sore home remedies really work?

Most of these home remedies are reported to shorten the episode, However they focus on applying something to the sore after it has already started.

So the best that can be expected is to shorten the healing time and perhaps relieve some of the pain. Be aware that some of them actually increase the pain.

There are many other home remedies, but you can see how involved the procedure for curing a cold sore can be.     “(He) told me right after I moved into the U.S. to be careful with the junk food… He noticed that many new immigrants went crazy with the excessive food offerings this country offers.

    Victims of Good Intentions…

    Second and third generation Hispanic families are also at risk. Ironically, they’re largely victims of their parents’ good intentions.

    “Generally speaking, back in Latin America, a chubby baby or little kid is the obvious sign of healthiness (compared with the unfortunate scars malnutrition leaves on many persons South of the Border),” writes Torno.

    The “Bigger is Better” Myth

    It’s worth mentioning that Hispanics are not alone in this. In my home country, South Africa, many of my countrymen and women struggle with  obesity  and its associated ills, like diabetes and heart disease.

    The chief culprit is the readily available processed food and the rapid spread of fast food outlets. The past decade has brought long-awaited political freedom and increasing prosperity. The flipside is a growing  obesity  problem.

    In people for whom poverty and near starvation still loom large, combating the “bigger is better” myth is extremely difficult.

    Research into Hispanics and  Obesity  links

    There have also been several academic studies of Hispanics and  obesity . A survey conducted in May 2004 for Kellogg by La Opinión/El Diario de la Prensa Market Research Center, shows Latino families not exercising at recommended levels resulting in rising  obesity  rates among them.

    Hispanics and  obesity  links are also under the spotlight in a five-year study at the University of Texas at El Paso. UTEP has received a $4.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study and reduce health disparities among Hispanics.

    The five-year grant will establish the Center for the Advancement of Minority Health and Health Disparities Research at UTEP. The grant will also help recruit and train faculty and will be used to disseminate research results to the community.

    So while its clear that Latino  Obesity  is a large and growing problem, there is also growing awareness of the problem.

    I Want What You Have!

    The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines envy as “painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage.” With the economy in turmoil, with folks losing their jobs or full-time status, with bankruptcies and foreclosures on the increase, with having to do more with less, with relationships seeming to disintegrate more rapidly, with so many struggling to “be somebody”, it’s no surprise that a fair amount of folks are caught up in a spell of envy.

    “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.” – Proverbs. 14:30,

    While some experts believe envy is a positive motivator (and it can be in some cases), mental health statistics and reports seem to point in a different direction – that envy is the catalyst that leads to depression, anger, resentment, malice, greed, violence, abuse, incivility and deep-seated negativity. When our “bones rot” they don’t rot alone. Our mind, our heart and our body follow.

    You’re experiencing abject fear about losing your job and one colleague lands a plumb position in a new company while another receives a promotion. You’re a sole proprietor whose client base is drying up and your competitor seems to have clients beating her door down. You have trouble making your mortgage payments and your closest friend has just purchased a new home. You’ve just taken your car in for repairs and your neighbor drives up in a new expensive sports car. You’re experiencing conflict in your relationship and the fellow next door, newly divorced, brings home a new “trophy wife.” You’re putting on weight while your partner has just shed 40 pounds. Your child is struggling academically and your brother’s son has just made the honor roll. Envy.

    In the throes of envy, we become mired in a sense of lack and deficiency. And, like an ulcer, envy eats away at you, consciously and subconsciously. It seems to be the energy that is running your life – a life of frustration – feeling like you’re being decimated from the inside out.

    Envy drives our perspective, and not in a positive way. Envy make us want to “get even” and in the process of getting even we usually end up doing, speaking or thinking in a way that most often is self-destructive. We either obsess about inflating our egos or denigrating others for what they have or who they are. Either way, it’s a lose-lose proposition.

    The honest reality with envy is that it’s never – repeat never – about the other person. Envy can be a blind spot. As Pogo said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” Few folks realize they are their own worst enemy when it comes to envy.

    The road to hate at work, at home, at play and in relationship can be quite overt or very subtle. We find ourselves overtly attacking others, gossiping, bullying, slandering or libeling, being abusive or spiteful, or quietly reveling in others’ mistakes or secretly wanting others to fail while we seethe inside. Envy is the cause of eroding relationships, camaraderie and collegiality. Envy eats away at intimacy, openness and connection.

    The underlying energy around envy is wanting what others have. While focusing outward on what others have, the envious one is also dwelling on “what’s wrong with me.” In this place of self-loathing and self-pity, when we feel “less than”, we tend to focus on what we don’t have. And we know the Law of Attraction says that we attract to ourselves that which we dwell on. Lack attracts lack. And caught up in a downward spiral of envy, you’re moving backwards, sowing seeds of doubt and limiting your potential.

    The antidote to envy

    The way out of envy is first to admit your envy. See it for what it is without judging yourself for your envy. The next step is to choose to eliminate or reduce your distraction with what others have. That’s a choice. When we fill our mind with thoughts of lack, there’s no room to focus on a “way out” – no way to put your energy on your feelings of self-worth and self-value (they’re there – just covered over and veiled). Rather than being caught up in feelings of depression, hopelessness and worthlessness that accompany envy, the choice is to move towards letting go of the doubt, the envy, and self-criticism.

    The antidote to envy is to make an honest, sincere, steadfast, and conscious effort to explore your intrinsic self-worth and potential. When you let go of beating yourself up, and take time consistently to relax, breathe, go inside and self-reflect, you can often access your sense of inner self-worth and esteem – an inner sense of worth and esteem that is not connected to anything or anyone “external.” An inner sense of worth and value that can promote energies of positivity, strength, courage, self-discipline and compassion for one’s self.

    You can decide to not be envious or jealous. It is a choice. The choice to be free of envy also allows an opening to possibility, to potential. Why? Because the control that your negative feelings had on you is released.

    As you consciously choose to let go of the feelings of envy, breathe deeply and sense deep down into your heart center, in the middle of your chest, and with a sense of adventure and curiosity, begin to explore your potential, possibility and opportunity. When your mind comes in with judgments and criticisms, recognize them and allow them to float by like the clouds in the sky on a windy day.

    Return to your choice to explore your potential and possibility and see what arises. Relax, breathe deeply and allow your heart and your body (not your “logical” mind) to inform your reflection. Focus on your self and be curious about what arises. Don’t judge or rule anything out.

    When a nugget of information that seems important arises, write it down and return to your deep reflection. When you feel complete with this session, explore what you saw, what you discovered and, objectively, look at the potential inside of what arose. Then, make a list of “baby steps”, small discrete tasks you can undertake to make the potential reality. What might you need to do next? Who might you need to talk with? What skill might you need to develop? What knowledge or information might you need to gather? Then, organize the small action steps, prioritize them, schedule them and execute them. And begin your journey.

    As you spend time creating or re-creating your self, your feelings of envy will begin to dissipate, replaced with feelings of possibility, hope, optimism and self-worth. From this place of well be-ing and positive esteem, you can begin to move your life forward with a sense of power, control and freedom, unencumbered by the weight of envy.

    So, our $10 food for thought questions are:

    ·Who are your friends and acquaintances that you envy? (hint: Think of people that you privately criticize, judge, make fun of, slander, resent, or are malicious or insecure towards.)

    ·Do you often find yourself throwing “pity parties” for yourself? Why?

    ·Do you find it hard to acknowledge, compliment or praise others? How does this make you feel?

    ·Do you constantly put yourself down? How does this make you feel?

    ·Do you feel folks are better than you? Why?
