High Fiber Food Diet Cuts Risk of Colon Polyps

Want to reduce your risk of colon polyps, commonly seen as a precursor to cancer? Lots of research has looked at broad categories of foods… fruits and veggies for instance, now we have a study that’s focusing on specific foods from a high fiber food diet.

Researchers have found that those who regularly eat foods like brown rice; legumes (beans, peas, lentils), cooked green veggies and dried fruits had a lower chance of colon polyps, recognized as a precursor to cancer of the colon.

The recommendations come after an analysis of data from nearly 3000 subjects taking part in a Study who were monitored for an astonishing 26 years.

The participants completed an initial survey that asked how often, on average, they ate specific foods. The follow up survey asked respondents who had undergone colonoscopies to report any colon polyps their doctor had diagnosed. During this 26-year study period, just short of 450 people went on to develop rectal or colon polyps.

The potentially troublesome colon polyp is a fleshy growth that appears on the inner lining of your large intestine. The growths are surprisingly common, and they are even more likely as the years pass.

Doctors know that about 75% of some polyps, known technically as adenomas, will become cancerous if given time enough to grow. This is why your health care team makes such a fuss about having those screenings when you should. Screening is still the best way to prevent disease from taking hold.

The researchers found that risk of polyps reduced by 40% in people who had brown rice once a week; 33% lower among these who ate legumes at a minimum of three times per week.

Eating dried fruits three or more times per week was linked to a 26% lower risk when compared to those who ate less than one dried fruit a week.

As for the cooked green veggies, eating them daily was linked to a 24% lower risk compared to those who ate them on less than five occasions per week.

These numbers held even after the team accounted for factors like a family history of colon cancer, education, physical activity level, intake of alcohol, smoking status, constipation, intake of sweets, use of pain medication and intake of multivitamins. Food variables were also considered, and adjusted for as needed.

So what do the foods studied have in common?

They’re all healthy options, of course… but more importantly; they all contain a lot of fiber that’s known to reduce potential carcinogens in the body. What’s more, cruciferous veggies (broccoli is one) also have detoxifying compounds that might make them a very natural way to protect the lining of the intestine from trouble.

Study researchers believe eating these kinds of foods can help to reduce the number of colon polyps you have, and thus your risk for developing colon cancer.

We know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. and the third most common type of cancer in both men and women according to the American Cancer Society. If you can keep yourself from joining that number, do so.

More work will need to be done on the benefits of a high fiber food diet for lowering the risk of developing colon polyps. In the meantime, have the screenings recommended for your age and health, and make the changes (even small ones) to your diet that will help protect you from this too-often-deadly disease… while you still can.

The Road to a Happy Healthy Liver

The first thing you should know about your liver is where its located. Chain Rule

The chain rule is one of the most commonly used rules in differential calculus. Essentially it is used to find the derivative of composite functions. So what does that mean exactly? Well let’s take a look.

Suppose we have the function f(x) = sqrt(x^2 + 9), how would we go about finding its derivative? The calculus tools you have learned up until this point do not allow you to solve this. So as you may have guessed we have to use the chain rule.

The chain rule makes use of inherent substitution to solve composite functions. We can write this out in Leibniz form as;

dy/dx = (dy/du) * (du/dx)

This may look kind of complicated, but it is pretty easy to put into use.

Let’s go back to our function f(x) = sqrt(x^2 + 9). First we can make the substitution u = x^2+9. We will refer to this as our inside function. Now if we sub u back into our original function we are left with;

f(u) = sqrt(u)

So according to our chain rule we need to find two terms; dy/du and du/dx. Dy/du is the derivative of the ‘outside’ function. We can solve this fairly easily.

Dy/du = 1/(2*sqrt(u)). This is a pretty common derivative, hopefully you have seen this before.

So now we can find the derivative of the inside function;

u = x^2 + 9
Du/dx = 2x

Now that we have both pieces, we can put them into the chain rule.

Dy/dx = 1/(2sqrt(u)) * 2x
= 2x/(2sqrt(x^2+9))
= x /sqrt(x^2 + 9)

So that’s really all there is to it. Hopefully now you can see that this is easier than it sounds. Find some more example problems and practice it more. It is an important rule you will have to use often.

Stomach Ulcer Basics

Affecting millions of Americans each year, a stomach ulcer is a raw, open area in the normal lining of the stomach. Stomach ulcers get their particular name depending on the exact location of the ulcer. For example, a duodenal or peptic ulcer is a stomach ulcer found in the first foot of small intestines past the stomach. A gastric ulcer in located inside the stomach itself. Although duodenal or peptic ulcers are almost always benign, it is important to remember that gastric or stomach ulcers can be malignant. Close medical management is critical.

Another cause of ulcers, particularly gastric and duodenal ulcers, can be a bacterial infection known as Helicobacter pylori or H. pylori. The helicobacter pylori bacterium may be transmitted from person to person through contaminated food and water and is treated with antibiotics.

One of the major symptoms of a stomach ulcer is pain, more specifically pain that feels much like a gnawing or burning pain in the middle upper abdomen often occurring some two to three hours after a meal. Often this pain is mistaken for heartburn or even hunger. Pain from a stomach ulcer may awaken you at night and may be relieved with food or milk.

Stomach ulcers are treated with prescription strength medications designed to reduce stomach acid, to protect the stomach lining and to treat the H. pylori bacteria, if it is present.

There are several medications that are commonly used to treat stomach ulcers. If the intent is to reduce stomach acid, then your physician may prescribe medications such as H2-Receptor antagonists like Nizatidine (Axid®), Cimetidine (Tagamet®), Ranitidine (Zantac®), or Famotidine (Pepcid®). Also used to reduce stomach acids are medications called Proton pump inhibitors. These types of medications include Omeprazole (Prilosec®), Esomeprazole (Nexium®), Lansoprazole (Prevacid®), or Pantoprazole (Pantoloc®). Medications used to protect the lining of the stomach include over-the-counter medications such as Rolaids or Tums or medications such as sucralfate, which forms a protective barrier over the site of the ulcer to help it to heal.

Stomach ulcers are certainly painful and can lead to additional complications such as bleeding. They require aggressive treatment directed by your healthcare provider in order to resolve the current ulcer and attempt to prevent future recurrences.

Two Forms of Fat Within the Body

The typical arterial wall is made up of three basic layers. There are also two forms of fat within the body which can be classified into low density protein and high density protein. There are multiple functions that happen within our body which we are not aware of and atherosclerosis is one such function. It begins with the buildup of fat which is accumulated within the arterial wall which is dependent on the general condition of the arterial wall as well as concentration of the increased quantity of fat levels present in the body. This fat penetrates through the arterial wall and undergoes a mechanism called oxidation which converts the fat molecules into substance which is dangerous to the body and triggers the inflammation process. At this stage, white blood cells called monocytes move from the bloodstream into the arterial wall and start the inflammatory response. This result in cells referred to as macrophages which swallow the oxidized fat molecules, and once this is done, these cells turn into what is referred to as foam cells.

The problem is that often, these foam cells can burst releasing the contents of the cell onto the arterial wall. When this happens regularly, the foam cell will form fibrous material which helps increase the frequency of arteries plaque growth which results from the protein in the arterial wall and can impact the membranes as well.

In the initial phase, this growth allows the walls of the artery to hold only a certain amount blood thereby maintaining a noteworthy but reduced blood flow. This being the case, the tests will reveal only those artery plaques which bulge into the center of the arterial lumen and are not just building up. This happens as the plaque is located deep within the layers. Therefore the results of medical tests cannot be considered as conclusive while determining the growth of plaque and the advent of atherosclerosis in the body.
