Usually a doctor will monitor the  cyst  using ultrasound or ultrasonic observation and also prescribe oral contraceptives, which will regulate your menstrual cycle and prevent the forming of follicles which cause the  cysts , also reducing the size of the already existing  cyst . Skipping the sugar pills and preventing your period from coming can also help, as this prevents  cysts  from forming with the releasing of eggs. This treatment for an ovarian  cyst  is usually enough and yields a high rate of success, though in some less common cases where the  cyst  grows too large or shows signs of being cancerous, laparoscopy or a laparotomy may be needed. In some cases where the  cysts  are not cancerous, a cystectomy may be used to remove the  cysts , leaving the ovaries intact, however, in some cases where cancer may be a concern, an oophorectomy, which does involve removal of the ovaries may be needed.

Ordinarily, small  cysts  that show no signs of being cancerous in premenopausal women are monitored for two weeks to a month, and no further follow up is needed. Dogs may develop masses in the spleen. These can be benign or malignant. Hemangiosarcoma is the most common type of malignant spleen tumor in dogs. This is an aggressive cancer that tends to spread to other internal organs. Once metastasis has occurred, the prognosis is poor.

Although this type of cancer can occur in any dog, it is common in middle aged to elderly dogs, especially large breeds like German Shepherd and Golden Retriever.

Canine spleen cancer symptoms

When the tumor ruptures, the spleen bleeds and internal hemorrhage occurs. Excessive blood loss may result in death. Symptoms of spleen cancer in dogs are:

  • shock
  • pale gums
  • cold body
  • weakness
  • abdominal distention
  • anemia

By the time the tumor is detected, it usually has become large and has metastasised to liver, lungs, brain and other organs.

Diagnosis of spleen tumor

Several tests can determine the existence of masses. The initial step involves a physical examination. A firm mass can be felt in the spleen area on palpation. Thereafter, radiographs of the abdomen are performed to determine if the mass is on the spleen and radiographs of the chest is for checking the spread of cancer. Abdominal ultrasound may detect cancer spread to liver and other organs. Blood tests are also carried out.

It may not be obvious before surgery whether the tumor is benign or malignant. If radiographs and ultrasound show spread of tumor to other organs, the tumor is malignant.

If no tumor spread is visible, the mass may or may not be benign. Where the tumor spread is too small to be seen, it may not be obvious if it is benign or malignant until the abdomen is opened.

Treatment for dog spleen tumor

For both benign and malignant tumors, the recommended treatment is splenectomy. If the cancer spread is minimal, chemotherapy following surgery may prolong the dog’s life span.

If the tumor is benign and the splenectomy is not carried out, there will be repeated hemorrhages that is potentially life threatening to the dog. Splenectomy gets rid of the associated problems and symptoms caused by benign tumor.

Polycystic Liver Disease Or PLD

Polycystic liver disease or PLD is the rare inherited disorder that causes cysts to form on the liver that have the potential to decrease liver functioning. However, most individuals who have PLD will be asymptomatic – meaning that they will experience no symptoms – and will not develop any serious complications from this disease.

While many cases of PLD are caused by PKD or polycystic kidney disease, there are cases where PLD has developed in individuals who do not have PKD. Polycystic liver disease causes cysts to form on the liver that can cause swelling and abdominal pain in some patients.

Prevalence and Symptoms of PLD

Polycystic liver disease is an extremely rare condition that affects less than two hundred thousand individuals in the United States. While most individuals are born with this disorder, many are never diagnosed until they are in their mid forties to early fifties and some may never be diagnosed due to the fact that this disease typically causes no symptoms or serious complications.

Some cases of PLD are discovered only after image testing is done for another medical condition. The cysts that grow with PLD are typically very small and cause no problem with liver functioning; however, these cysts tend to grow larger in women and the reason for this is thought to be linked with the levels of the estrogen hormones.

Typically the cysts that occur with polycystic liver disease require no treatment. Larger cysts can cause the liver to become enlarged (hepatomegaly) and harden causing abdominal pain. While it is rare, these cysts may become extremely large interfering with liver function and cause severe symptoms and serious complications that may require a liver transplant, however, this typically not recommended unless the complications have significantly affected the patient’s quality of life and all other forms of treatment have failed.

Polycystic Kidney Disease and its Association with Polycystic Liver Disease

Over fifty percent of individuals who develop polycystic kidney disease will also develop polycystic liver disease, however, when PLD occurs on its own, the cysts will typically not develop within the kidneys causing PKD. While there is no cure or specific treatments available for either polycystic kidney or liver disease, treatment will typically be given to control the symptoms of the disease.

When these disease coexist, treatment is typically needed to control hypertension (high blood pressure), pain medication, or antibiotics to treat any infections that may have occurred. In more serious cases of polycystic kidney disease, failure of the kidneys can occur requiring a kidney transplant.

Not only are the foods you’re eating nutritionally unsound, but the number of food related illnesses and deaths are on the rise…The FDA states that food poisoning, Listeriosis, Hepatitis A, Hemorrhagic Colitis and a number of other food borne illnesses are killing 13 men, women and children per day.

It’s appalling that this is happening in our country every single day in this day and age.

Young children, the elderly and anyone with a weakened immune system suffer the greatest risk; however most of the above mentioned illnesses are of great risk to all of us. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that roughly 76 million people in the United States suffer food borne illnesses each year, 300,000 are hospitalized and 5,000 die. According to the CDC children younger than the age of 4 are sickened by food more than those in any other age group, but adults over age 50 suffer more hospitalizations and death as a result of food-related infections.

Food recalls and food related illnesses and deaths have increased nationwide. Food was meant to nourish our bodies; our food safety system needs to be reinvented to fit the needs of today. It’s time to rethink what we’re doing and understand why the current system is not working.

The New York Times recently quoted Dr. David Acheson, associate commissioner for foods at the FDA to say “The system needs to be modernized to address the challenges and changes of the globalization of the food supply and rapid distribution chains” and Dr. Stephen Sundlof (director of the agency’s’ food center) stated “As supply chains get longer and longer, there’s more opportunity to introduce contaminants that have a public health effect.”

Having the variety of foods we have available to us is wonderful, but the truth is that we’ve gotten spoiled. It used to be if you didn’t grow it or couldn’t buy it locally you did without it. We’re not willing to do that now; we’re not willing to make sacrifices to help ourselves, our communities, our environment or our economy. We are an instant gratification, quick fix, feel good society…but at what cost? You can change some of this, but only if you’re willing to be part of the solution.

Eating and buying locally grown and raised foods will ensure safe foods. The reason local foods will be by far the safest is because these growers are feeding these foods to their own families. Organic meats, fruits, vegetables, herbs, wine etc. can be found closer than you think…Here are 5 helpful tips to help you live a longer, healthier, safer life…

1. Plant a garden-You can construct a garden no matter how small or large an area you have. Cinder Block Gardening produces the best crops, uses the least amount of tools and can be used in just about any size area, under just about any conditions. Buy cinder blocks to fit the area you’ll use, mix up a “no fail” soil and plant away-no drainage problems, no weeds, no failure. Row gardens are traditional but they take a lot of work, weeding, fertilizing, tilling etc. There’s also Container gardening, great for small areas (even apartment dwellers). Any style or size container you can think of will work; you’ll just need to adjust each container you use to be plant friendly. Drainage, soil, moisture levels etc. will all need to be watched closely and adjusted regularly until you find what works best.

2. Buy locally grown food-Shop at your local farmers markets, co-op, food shed, or health food store. Ask where your food was grown and if it’s pesticide free. You may not even realize how many growers are within 100 miles of your home. Do your homework, they’re out there. I guarantee it.

3. Join a Co-Op-If you don’t have a lot of time or space to plant your own, or would rather share the gardening experience, join or start a co-op. Co-ops are great because it’s a community project that you can participate in and benefit from.

4. Read labels-The little stickers on every piece of fruit and vegetable you purchase tells you exactly where it came from and how it was grown. Labels with four digits indicate conventionally grown food (using pesticides). Labels with five digits starting with an 8 indicate that the food is genetically modified (stay away from these at all costs…Genetically Modified Organisms are by far the worst foods to consume). Labels with five digits starting with a 9 indicate that the food is organically grown (without using pesticides).

5. Educate yourself-Subscribe to community newsletters. Know where and how your food is grown. Buy locally grown foods within a 100 mile radius of your home. Share your knowledge and speak up when it comes to asking questions or voicing your concerns about foods you and your family will be eating.

Be aware of the dangers that inhabit your cupboards, refrigerators, lunch boxes and grocery stores…Plant a garden and grow your own, otherwise buy local, buy fresh, buy organic…

What Does an Ulcer Feel Like?

Peptic ulcer is a hole or wound on the wall of the intestine. The degree of this wound and the associated pains are dependent on many variables. The extent of the symptoms presented varies from person to person.

Ulcers are usually found in two major parts of the digestive tract – the stomach (Gastric) and the duodenum, which is the tube linking the stomach to the rest of the small intestine (duodenal). Symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. Some persons may present with mild indigestion to no abdominal pain, while others may show several symptoms. Some of the symptoms and signs common to peptic ulcer sufferers include the following:

1. Burning abdominal pain: This pain which is described as burning or gnawing is usually felt in the region between the xiphoid process of the chest and the navel, and may radiate to the back. Pain can either be much immediately after food, some hours after food or early in the morning on rising from bed.

2. Nausea and vomiting: There is the feeling to vomit or there could be actual vomiting. In severe cases the person may vomit up bright red blood especially in gastric ulcer, or vomit coffee ground vomitus (partially digested blood) in duodenal ulcer. Vomiting in most cases could be as a result of the irritation of the intestinal wall or due to the build up of ketone bodies in the blood following the breakdown of fats. This comes about as a result of the person not eating because of the fear of aggravating the pain.

3. Indigestion: This manifests in vomiting foods eaten several hours or days earlier. This may be followed by bloated abdomen or accumulation of gases (flatulence)

4. Blood in stool: The individual may also pass stool containing blood stain or may pass black, tarry stool. This in medical parlance is known as melaena. The blood becomes black following the action of digestive enzymes on it as it travels down the intestinal tract.

5. Unusual weight loss: The person may also lose weight because of not eating enough. There may also be weakness. This can be common with gastric ulcer since pain is aggravated by eating.

Since symptoms presented by different persons are not exactly the same, it is better to see a doctor before arriving at a conclusion at to whether or not one has an ulcer. There are other conditions that also present with the afore-mentioned signs. You need to be sure what the problem is before considering what to do about it.

Foods such as eggs, chicken, meat, and fish, which are low-fat sources of proteins, are very much essential for the elderly.

Carbohydrates and Fiber

The entire body obtains its energy from carbohydrates. Bread, pasta, cereals, and other grains are rich in carbohydrates. You can prevent constipation by taking a diet that is rich in water and fiber.

Fat

The diet of older people should be low in fat, not fat free. You can limit your fat intake by including lean meat and low-fat diary products. As far as possible, do not fry your food in oil.

Panic Attack or Heart Attack

Unless you know the facts, you may mistake the chest pains that normally accompany panic  attacks  for a  heart   attack .

Every year, thousands of people having chest pain, difficulty breathing, pain or numbness in the left arm and tingling throughout the body end up in a hospital emergency room because they believe they are having a  heart   attack . Typically, a few tests are run, and the patient is sent home because the nature of the attack he or she experienced is one of panic, not coronary.

It’s easy to understand how a panic  attack  can be mistaken for a  heart   attack ; the two share several common symptoms-with subtle, but recognizable differences. For instance, the chest pain from a  heart   attack  is focused in the center of the chest and is crushing, as if a heavy weight is sitting on top of the chest. It is usually persistent, may radiate to the left arm, neck or back and lasts longer than 5 – 10 minutes.  Heart   attack  victims don’t hyperventilate (unless the person’s fear of  heart   attack  triggers a panic attack), any tingling they experience is usually confined to the left arm, and vomiting is common.

During a panic  attack , chest pain is localized over the  heart  and described as “sharp, and comes and goes. The pain usually intensifies with breathing in and out, and pressing on the center of the chest. Panic attack may cause nausea, but vomiting is rare, and if tingling is present, the entire body tingles. Hyperventilation almost always precedes a panic attack. Using deep breathing techniques dispel this and combined with relaxation exercises, other panic attack symptoms disappear in less than 5 minutes. If the location of the pain moves to the center of the chest, doesn’t go away within 10 minutes, is accompanied by more than one incident of vomiting or diarrhea, or goes away and returns a few minutes later, you should immediately get medical attention.

Panic  attacks  don’t cause  heart  disease, and some experts say that they actually affect the heart similarly to the way cardio exercise does, by causing the release of adrenaline, increasing the heart rate, and expanding blood vessels. On the same note,  heart  disease doesn’t cause panic  attacks , although a person with a history of panic  attacks  who is actually having a coronary may also panic for fear of worsening the  heart  damage, dying or being disabled.

Using the correct techniques and exercises, you can learn to control panic attack symptoms. I’m one of those with anxiety/panic disorders who have benefited from these practices. I’ve learned to overcome the symptoms of panic  attack  and differentiate them from  heart   attack  symptoms. It takes practice to control panic  attack  symptoms, but if you learn to recognize the difference between panic and  heart   attack  signs, and you know that what you’re experiencing is only a panic attack, they’ll be much easier to deal with.
