This happens when you are affected by flu, cold and a lot of sun. The foods you should avoid are tomatoes, carbonated soda, citrus and anything containing vinegar. These are acid foods and pump up the situation. If you have decided to fight with the virus then don’t give it a chance, keep all of the acid away from the sore. In addition, the bacteria could produce a variant that is immune to medication. Antibiotic medicines include clarithromycin, azithromycin, trimethoprim or sulfamethazole, and so on. Chronic  Bronchitis

In the United States, arthritis affects more than 46 million people. By the year 2030, as the “baby boomers” get older, this number is expected to climb to 60 million! With numbers like that, it’s a safe bet that your nursing assistants provide care to clients with arthritis. But, do your CNAs know that arthritis is not a normal part of aging and what they can do to help clients who suffer from arthritis? Here is some information to help get a discussion going about arthritis at your next CNA inservice meeting.

The Aches & Pains of Arthritis

“Oh, my aching joints!” You’ve probably heard many of your clients make that complaint. In fact, you may have said it yourself!

Aching joints are one of the main symptoms of arthritis. (This makes sense since the word “arthritis” comes from two Greek words that mean “joint” and “inflammation”.) But, did you know that…?

  • There are over 100 different types of arthritis. Some forms of the disease are mild and some can be very serious.
  • Some types of arthritis affect the whole body-not just the joints.
  • Most forms of arthritis are chronic…meaning that there is no cure and they last a lifetime.
  • Half of the people over age 65 report symptoms of arthritis.

Isn’t Arthritis Just Part of Getting Older?

You might be thinking that arthritis is just a normal part of aging. So, what’s the big deal? Shouldn’t we all just expect to have aching joints as we get older?

Well…some forms of arthritis do come from wear and tear on the joints. And, the older we get, the more our joints tend to wear down. However, there are a couple of important points to remember about arthritis:

  • Nearly two out of every three people with arthritis are younger than age 65.
  • Some elderly people never develop arthritis.
  • There are many young adults who are diagnosed with arthritis. In fact, over 8 million Americans under the age of 44 have arthritis.
  • Some forms of arthritis appear to be caused by viruses, bacteria or genetic defects-rather than by wear and tear on aging joints.
  • Most people over 60 show signs of arthritis on their X-rays, but many of them have no symptoms of the disease.

What Causes Arthritis?

The exact causes of arthritis remain a mystery. However, there seems to be three main factors that play a role in the development of arthritis. These include:

Genetic Factors

  • There seems to be a genetic link for developing osteoarthritis, especially in the joints of the hands. Some people are born with defective cartilage which tends to break down easily.

Accidents, Injuries & Illness

  • Some types of arthritis may be due to bacterial infections.
  • People with diabetes have a higher risk of developing some forms of arthritis.
  • Accidental injuries-such as a dislocated joint, a bad sprain or a fracture-can lead to arthritis.
  • Sports-related injuries can cause arthritis.


  • Poor nutrition may be a factor in the development of arthritis.
  • Years of poor posture or lack of exercise can contribute to arthritis.

Because arthritis affects so many people, it’s likely that at least half of your clients are affected by the disease. They are forced to learn how to manage their everyday lives while dealing with this painful, chronic condition. So, what’s the good news? You can help!

A Dozen Tips for Helping Clients Manage Arthritis

1. Keep in mind that if you hear popping, clicking or banging noises when your clients move their joints, they may have osteoarthritis. And, if you hear a sound like crinkling plastic wrap when they move their joints, they may have rheumatoid arthritis.

2. Remember that some days are better than others for people with arthritis. Don’t be surprised if your clients can function pretty well one day and need lots of help the next.

3. Check the fit of your clients’ shoes. Remember that people’s feet can change size as they age. If shoes are too small, they will put pressure on sensitive joints. If shoes are too large, they put your client at risk for falling.

4. Remind your clients to change position frequently. This includes the position of their jaw, neck, hands, shoulders, arms, hips, legs, back and feet. Encourage them to stretch any area that feels tense or stiff.

5. Keep in mind that people with arthritis may find it easier to climb stairs one at a time, leading with their stronger leg.

6. Remind your clients to use the strongest joint possible to complete a task. For example, rather than open a door with their arthritic hand, they can push it open with a shoulder instead.

7. Encourage your clients with arthritis to sit in chairs with arms so they can push on the arms when getting up.

8. Be sure to balance periods of exercise and activity with periods of rest.

9. Remember that some of your clients may have specially made splints to help keep their joints in the correct position and reduce pain. Your clients may need help putting on and taking off these splints.

10. Remind your clients to use proper posture. This helps prevent additional joint damage. (And, keep in mind that slouching actually requires more energy than sitting up straight!)

11. Encourage your clients to use any self-help devices they may have to help them bathe, dress or eat. If they don’t know how to use a particular assistive device, let your supervisor know.

12. Be sure to let your supervisor know if a client has pain, stiffness or swelling in or around a joint.

An Overview Of Bone Fractures

We hear a lot about bone  fractures  as the usual result of an unfortunate accident – be it a motor vehicle crash or a case of slip and fall. Every bone  fracture  is different, depending on the location of the injury and its severity, and therefore the doctor’s approach to treatment and rehabilitation is unique to it. In this article we briefly discuss about the different types of bone  fractures , the causes and its diagnoses, and how a  fracture  gets treated as it goes through the healing process.

There are three common causes of bone  fractures , although  fractures  may happen for a variety of ways. The first cause is trauma to bone tissue. A fall, an automobile accident or a sudden hit by an object can bring trauma to a bone, resulting to a  fracture . The second cause is osteoporosis, or bone thinning. Over time, the bone gets less dense as bone protein and other minerals gets altered or lost. As a result, the bone becomes more porous, making the risk higher for a bone  fracture . The third common cause is bone overuse. Most sports athletes suffer a bone  fracture  due to excessive stress forced on the bone location.

There are two general types of bone  fracture  – a closed  fracture  and an open  fracture . A closed  fracture  means that the bone is broken but the skin is not affected (no wounds or lacerations). An open  fracture  means that the bone has pierced the skin, resulting to a wound which may or may not show the broken bone.

You can immediately tell if you have a bone  fracture  by just examining the affected area. Usually on the impact itself you may hear a crack or a snap, telling you that the bone was broken. There would be swelling in the area of the  fracture  and the skin would be tender. An X-ray will show the actual damage done to the bone tissue. In other cases, a closed  fracture  may also develop, but may not immediately appear as a  fracture  on the X-ray; instead there will be a painful sensation in the area, with some inflammation and tenderness.

The chiropractor (a physician who specializes in the bone) will use a particular method to fix the  fracture , usually with splints, braces or casts, to make sure that the bone will heal in the correct position. For complicated cases, the chiropractor will use internal fixation methods such as metal plates, pins or screws implanted to the bone tissue. Depending on the physician’s assessment, he/she may employ either one or a combination of these methods.

It may take a number of weeks or months for a  fracture  to heal. Your bone tissue will start growing new bone cells on the site of the  fracture , creating new bone tissues until the  fracture  is closed. The healing process is usually painful, therefore you must strictly follow the doctor’s advice on handling the  fracture  so that you can recuperate faster and resume to normal activity. During rehabilitation, your activity may be limited to the extent of the pain threshold of the  fracture . By the time the bone becomes strong again, you may have to undergo certain exercise to strengthen the muscles surrounding the bone  fracture  so that it can function again normally. The exercises will increase in activity over time until the  fracture  is completely healed, and normal skeletal activity is restored.

Even heredity plays a role. If your mother and grandmother suffered from osteoporosis, there is a greater chance that you may as well.

So the next question is, what can we do about this naturally and safely? Well, here is where there is a lot of misinformation going around. Some say that taking hormone injections, such as HGH, can do the trick. The problem is, these injections are very dangerous…the reasons why are beyond the scope of this article. here is no standard treatment or therapy for cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy affects each person differently so treatment must be individually tailored as well. Since there is no cure for cerebral palsy, most doctors focus on finding treatment and therapy geared toward managing or diminishing the neurological problems associated with cerebral palsy.

Therapy and treatments for the symptoms of cerebral palsy are numerous. Most experts agree a combination of treatments, given in conjunction, produce the best results. A cerebral palsy victim’s health care team work together to prescribe a balanced regimen of treatments designed to increase quality of life. An individualized therapy and treatment regimen for cerebral palsy may include:

* Drugs to control muscle spasms and seizure

The Most Successful Treatments and Therapy for Cerebral Palsy

Improvements in the treatment of cerebral palsy are advancing as science progresses. Three treatments and therapy procedures have recently become known as successful in treating cerebral palsy: Botox injections, the Baclofen pump and a surgery called selective dorsal rhizotomy or SDR. Each treatment has its own risks and benefits.

Botox Treatment for Cerebral Palsy

Botox is the brand name for a commercialized version of the Botulism toxin. Doctors use Botox to reduce muscle tightness, increase the ability of a muscle to stretch and to decrease likeliness of permanent muscle contracture. The toxin works by blocking nerve signals passing between the muscle and the spinal column.

Botulinum toxin is one of the most deadly substances known to man. When used in extremely small does it is relatively harmless, unless a person is allergic to the toxin. Poisoning only occurs from the consumption of excessive amounts of Botox.

The benefits seem to far outweigh the risks. Doctors inject Botox into 3 or 4 small muscle groups particularly affected by cerebral palsy. Injections provide measured relief from spastic muscles for around 3 months. Many cerebral palsy patients use the period of relief to work on muscles stretches and range of motion exercises. Botox is expensive and the effect of the treatment is temporary.

Treatment of Cerebral Palsy with the Baclofen Pump

The Baclofen pump is a surgically implanted pump filled with a drug used to reduce muscle spasticity. It is implanted in the lower abdomen and delivers the drug directly to the spinal cord by catheter. Baclofen treatment is known to be extremely effective for some people. Risks include infection from surgery, seizures from overdose and depressed breathing. Statistics indicate the pump is safe and rarely results in any serious complications.

Baclofen has been used orally to reduce muscle spasms for a long time. Doctors discovered the benefits of the drug were increased when applied directly to the nerves causing cerebral palsy symptoms. The pump also produces fewer side effects than when baclofen is taken orally. The benefits of reduced muscle tension increase the quality of life for many people with cerebral palsy.

Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy as a Treatment for Cerebral Palsy

Selective dorsal rhizotomy works best for cerebral palsy patients with spastic diplegia. Selective dorsal rhizotomy is a surgery that reduces muscle stiffness and spasticity in the legs. Several vertebras are removed from the back so a surgeon can reach the spinal cord. Nerves affecting muscles with symptoms of cerebral palsy are cut to reduce spasticity.

Benefits vary from patient to patient and are most prevalent for children under the age of 4. Selective dorsal rhizotomy is different from other cerebral palsy treatment because the benefits are usually lifelong, rather than temporary. Gains in movement result allow increased abilities in walking, breathing, sitting up, bending at the waist, hand use and head control.

Risks center on the surgery itself, not later side effects. Removal of vertebrae can result in back pain and problems. Surgeons always risks cutting too many nerve fibers. If the incorrect fibers are severed the result can be total paralysis.

Facial Paralysis

Facial  paralysis  is commonly a side effect of a birthing process that is difficult or one that results in birth injuries because of a type of medical malpractice. The first noticeable symptoms of facial  paralysis  are often seen immediately, although about half of all those affected will spontaneously recover completely within thirty days without the need for any type of medical intervention or treatment. Of the remaining half of patients, twenty percent affected with facial  paralysis  recover after one to three months following birth, and five to ten percent recover after four to six months following birth. The remaining twenty percent of patients with facial  paralysis  never recover.

The condition of facial  paralysis  happens when the facial nerves are compressed. In some deliveries that are difficult this can happen as a side effect of the process of birth, with no real reason or explanation for the facial  paralysis  occurring.

Facial  paralysis  can happen when the baby is being born, or while he or she is still inside of the womb. That being said, the main cause of the condition is due to pressure that is applied to the baby’s face during birth or the labor process. Forceps use during the delivery process can also cause injuries that result in the facial nerves being damaged.

Since the process of childbirth can be so complicated, and since both the mother and the baby have a high potential for harm, it is extremely important that medical professionals be quite experienced and be able to adjust to any situation and potential complication that could come up. If the doctor, hospital, or other medical personnel is found to be negligent, serious harm such as facial  paralysis  could result.

There are certain risk factors and preexisting conditions that increase the possibility of suffering the condition of facial  paralysis . Because conditions like facial  paralysis  can be a side effect of a birthing trauma, it is necessary to be aware of all risk factors in order to decrease their possibility. Failing to identify these risks could actually increase the possibility of this and other types of birth injuries. Common risk factors include: drugs used to induce labor, prolonged labor or pregnancy, larger birth weight, and epidural anesthesia.

Even though these risk factors do not mean a birth injury such as facial  paralysis  will occur, extra care needs to be taken when any of these factors are present.

It should be quite obvious to detect a baby with facial  paralysis  immediately following birth. The normal expressions seen by the baby will appear to be different and the eyelid on the side that has been affect will fail to close. Depending on how much compression was applied to the facial nerves, the entire side of the baby’s face from chin to forehead could be affected. More often, facial  paralysis  will just impact one portion of the face as it impacts the lower branch of the nerves of the face that are used for muscle control near the lip area. This is noted clearly when the child cries. Facial  paralysis  most often affects just one side of the face; however there are times when both sides could be affected.

Injuries at birth that result in facial  paralysis  can range in severity from mild to serious depending on what caused the injury to occur. If the nerve is just bruised, the facial  paralysis  will resolve itself within a few weeks time. In the event that the nerve has been damaged in a more severe nature, it may necessitate the need for surgery to repair the damage. Because most cases of facial  paralysis  are due to damage to the nerve fiber, and not nerve fiber that is torn, the child should be able to heal from the  paralysis  eighty percent of the time.

Asian women have been found to consume less calcium. This is mostly due to the fact that up to 90% of Asian American women are lactose intolerant and avoid using dairy products that contain calcium. As you may know, calcium is essential for maintaining a healthy skeleton.

Asian women generally have lower hip   fracture  rates than Caucasian women. Even so, Asian women seem to have as high a rate of incident of vertebrae  fractures  as Caucasian women.

A  sore , red and swollen  throat  can make you feel sick and miserable. Fortunately there are a host of natural  sore   throat  remedies that can get you feeling better fast. The beauty of these natural  sore   throat  remedies is that you can find a lot of the ingredients at home. Unlike conventional medicine these remedies have no nasty side effects, and are safe even for children.

These are some of the most popular  sore   throat  remedies that I dispense to my patients:

Salt water gargle

Add half teaspoon of salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper to ¼ cup of warm water. Gargle with this mix for a minute or two. Repeat as needed or at least 3 times a day. The cayenne pepper numbs the nerves in the throat and can relieve the pain. The salt and warm water cleanses the throat and rinses away any microbes or toxins.

Ginger syrup

You can buy commercial preparations of ginger syrup which combine ginger, Manuka honey and apple cider vinegar. Alternatively make your own up by adding 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger to 1 teaspoon of honey with added apple cider vinegar to taste. Sip the syrup straight off the spoon or dissolve it in hot water to soothe the pain and heal the throat.

Hot lemon tea

Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a cup of hot water. Add some grated ginger, garlic, cayenne and honey to make it even more effective. This is one of the best natural  sore   throat  remedies around, and has the added benefit of killing off the microbes causing the infection.

Steam inhalation

Sit with your head over a bowel of hot water. Cover your head with a towel and breathe deeply for a few minutes. Add a pinch of salt or a teaspoon of tea leaves to boost the steam’s cleansing properties. Some of my patients like to add a few drops of an anti-viral oil like tea tree, thyme or eucalyptus oil.

Chicken soup

Make up a big pot of chicken broth. Load it up with lots of garlic, onion, ginger and turmeric to help thin and expel the mucus from your system. This is one of the natural  sore   throat  remedies that can comfort your soul, particularly if it reminds you of your grandmother’s home cooking!

Eat lightly

One of the least expensive natural  sore   throat  remedies is your diet. If your throat is really red and swollen do not eat any solid food. Aim for a liquid-only diet of broths, chicken soups, herbal teas and freshly squeezed vegetable juices. Sucking on some ice chips and/or zinc lozenges can help reduce the swelling.

When your throat improves you can add some soft fruits like kiwi, fresh pineapple and paw paw which are excellent for reducing inflammation. Protein foods like scrambled eggs, protein smoothies (get a sugar free powder like whey protein) and stir fries with fish, chicken or lean red meat are good options for when your appetite returns.

Vitamins and minerals

Tonsillectomies in Adults

I remember when I was a kid getting the feeling of a swollen throat, and soreness. I couldn’t swallow anything. Mom took me to the doctor, and he inserted that giant popsicle stick down my throat. He told me to say “Ahhh… ” and then the words came… Looks like your tonsils have to come out. It scared me to death. At the time, I was only 6 years old and the thought of going into the hospital terrified me.

My story comes from my childhood, however today; many adults are going through the procedure. This procedure is called a tonsillectomy.

Indication that you may need a Tonsillectomy

Not all doctors will prescribe a tonsillectomy. They will look for the following signs, and usually look for a more chronic condition. Here is a list of the symptoms of   Tonsillitis .

• Recurring Acute throat infections

• Chronic  tonsillitis  consisting of persistent, moderate to severe throat pain

• Sleep Apnea

• Difficulty eating or swallowing

• Have tonsil stones (also called tonsilloliths) at the back of the throat

• Abnormally large tonsils with crypts (craters or impacts in the tonsils)

What is the History of this procedure?

This procedure has been practiced for over 3,000 years. You will find it outlined in some books as “Hindu medicine” at about 1000B. Again about 1000 years later, Roman writing speaks about using the nail of the index finger to clean the tonsil. In about 100AD, they began using a surgical tool called a snare to actually remove the tonsil, but the writing also explains the biggest problem with this type of surgery, post-operative bleeding. This was a big deal at this period in early history because they did not practice the typical sterilizing procedures. It is not spoken of again for about 1200 years, until the early 1800’s when medicine began some semblance of actual science. A physician named Philip Syng Physick created the tonsil guillotine, which became the standard instrument for a tonsillectomy for over 80 years.

How do you get  Tonsillitis ?

It is theorized that infections requiring a tonsillectomy often result from streptococcus (strep throat). It may also result from other variations of bacteria. This is why most operations for this condition are done on children. Their immune systems are such that they are more prone to this virus.

After the operation

It will take about 2 weeks for you to recover from the operation. Sometimes it may take longer in adults. You will definitely find that you don’t want to swallow anything but you will need to. That is why they will feed you a strong diet of those childhood treats such as: popsicles, freezies, ice cream, frozen yogurt, puddings, slushies, sorbet, or just simple ice cubes.

Pain is common after the procedure, and as a result, you will recover in the hospital because they will be giving you narcotics to dull the pain. The hospital will avoid giving you any rough textured, spicy or acidic foods because these will usually irritate the area in your throat where the tonsils used to be.

The biggest issue that doctors deal with after this type of surgery is bleeding. The overall risk in bleeding is 1% – 2%. This number is higher in adults, especially if you are over 70. Cauterization of the wounds usually prevents bleeding, but in some cases, approximately 3%, some adult patients will develop excessive bleeding. If this happens then the surgeon will put you back under the knife to re-cauterize the wound in your throat.

The gallstones, hard clumps of cholesterol, is what product the painful symptoms and nausea/vomiting, because the bile in your gallbladder (bile is what helps you digest fat) gets backed up in your gallbladder.

Childhood obesity is an alarming worldwide problem that afflicts children aged six to nineteen. Due to the skyrocketing incidence of obesity in children, it has been estimated that more than 15% of all children within the given age bracket are already clinically obese- a sure sign that parents must take action. According to clinical studies done back in 2002, 15% of all children in the age bracket (6-19) were at risk for obesity.

What causes childhood obesity?

It should be no surprise to many parents that two of the greatest evils of modern living, overeating and lack of physical exercise are the main causes of childhood obesity. The prevalence of the problem so great that we are seeing more and more children below the age of 7 suffering from other related conditions, such as juvenile diabetes. Children who have been fed with fast food and take-out dinners from a very young age and have been accustomed to large amounts of sweets and sodas are considered high-risk for obesity.

Other factors

o Genetic predisposition- we speak of family lines that have had a long history of adult, overweight individuals who may have also suffered from other maladies associated with being obese or overweight. If both parents are overweight or obese, there is a big chance that the children are also at risk.

o The child’s psychology- peer pressure, problems at school, bullying and low self esteem can also lead to childhood obesity. Children usually find very few avenues to adequately vent their feelings of fear, frustration and alienation, so food becomes a natural outlet. Unfortunately, venting on food provides very temporary relief from the pressures of the real world and eventually takes a toll on the body.

o The family- what foods do the parents usually buy when they go grocery shopping? Often, unhealthy food choices can be traced to what the parents are accustomed to buying and feeding their children.

Childhood obesity can be brought about by other factors apart from lifestyle problems. While it is possible for genetic predisposition and other such factors to play a part in the formation of the problem, it is highly recommended that children who are already in the overweight category should begin regular physical activities such as sports and exercises. Sports such as the various martial arts can also help boos flagging confidence levels and may even help improve academic performance, because exercise has been known to make the mind and memory sharper.


Childhood obesity is a very frightening reality that we must actively address so it won’t be too late for our children. Lifestyle changes and long term diet improvements can help reverse a lifetime of bad eating habits. Starting on a new sport, such as martial arts or other similar sports can provide an adequate avenue where weight can be controlled and self-esteem issues can be addressed.
