All You Need to Know About Gastritis – Guarding Your Gut Isn’t Easy As You Think

I’ve had it happen to me too many times and trust me… it’s not your normal stomach ache that you can handle after having too much dinner. The agony is real and sometimes even your closest folks at home won’t be able to understand what’s going on with you and mistake it for just the traditional gas pain.

It’s even tougher if along with it, you also have GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) or acid reflux and ulcers. But that’s another story.

Gastritis in itself is an irritation of the stomach often brought about by medications, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, spicy, acidic or fatty food, skipping of meals and emotional stress. Its other name is Acid Peptic Disease.

When I was first diagnosed with it, I have to admit I denied the “emotional stress” part, but after further research, I did link it to my condition. I learned that stress does not necessarily cause gastritis, but it can put you in a position where the acid levels of your body are increased. Stress can put a physical strain on the human body, making it more difficult to heal it with medication or as much as possible, naturally.

The symptoms of gastritis include stomach pain concentrated at the upper portion of the abdomen (usually felt as a crampy, spastic or burning sensation), nausea, indigestion and vomiting.

If you have chronic or recurring gastritis and ulcers, you might want to get yourself checked for H.pylori bacteria. This is normally done via an endoscopy procedure. People who have this bacteria go through special tests and possibly antibiotic treatment to cure their condition. In my case, I didn’t have the bacteria but still had gastritis along with a weak esophageal sphincter causing GERD and heartburn.

Medications used to treat gastritis are the same as that for ulcers and acid reflux. Antacids such as Tums and Gaviscon, acid blocking medicines (proton pump inhibitors) such as Prevacid, Zantac and Nexium, and pre-motility agents such as Motilium and Ganaton. There are other brands and dosages so be sure to check with your physician on your recommended amount.

Here’s a red flag you should know. Avoid taking aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medicines such as Ibuprofen, Mefenamic acid and Naproxen as all these can be highly irritating on the stomach. Of course, this is quite a challenge especially if you have body pains and headaches and want immediate relief. Consult with your doctor on this.

In the course of your treatment, stay away from spicy, acidic and fatty foods. Avoid alcoholic and acidic beverages along with fruit juices. Sodas, chocolates, coffee, tea, and dairy products are a big no-no. It takes discipline to do this and I’ve had more than my fair share of violations and painful consequences. During this period, it’s best to have a list of foods you can eat and consult a nutritionist on how you can maintain a healthy diet without drastically losing weight (often an outcome of gastritis). Be sure to stick to it and don’t skip your meals. And again, learn to manage emotional stress.

One last note. I have nothing against conventional medication as long as it’s in emergency situations or just for a shortened period of time. For long-term treatment however, it’s best to go natural. Simply popping up pills or gulping on a liquid antacid every time you have an attack is nothing but a band-aid approach to the root problem. Why do that if you can trace the main cause, eliminate it and become gastritis free?

Epstein Barr Syndrome Treatment

Epstein Barr Syndrome is caused by the Epstein Barr virus – the same virus that is responsible for mononucleosis (mono) or glandular fever.

EBV syndrome is transmitted by direct contact with virus-infected saliva, mainly through kissing, although it can be picked up from sharing drinks, eating utensils, lipsticks etc., or through blood transfusions. The syndrome is most common in teenagers. The majority of people have had it by age 40. Children can pick it up, and in these cases it can go undiagnosed or passed off as a cold or flu virus. When EBV occurs in patients over 40, the symptoms can be more debilitating and prolonged.

Typical EBV symptoms involve a sore throat, fever, swollen glands and tiredness. There may be other viral symptoms like headache, body aches, poor appetite, runny nose, cough, loose stools, sensitivity to light and enlargement of the liver and spleen. Complications of the EBV syndrome are rare but can include rupture of the spleen, pericarditis, hepatitis, anemia, nerve damage, a decrease in blood platelets, pneumonia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Symptoms usually appear 30-50 days after exposure to the virus, although in some cases the symptoms can take months to manifest. In most cases, the syndrome is self-limiting, lasting only a couple of weeks. However in some people the illness can become recurrent or chronic, lasting months or years. In these cases the most common lingering complaint is fatigue.

Epstein Barr Syndrome is diagnosed according to antibody blood tests, white blood cell levels plus a person’s age, symptoms and a physical examination.

The conventional medical treatment is rest and fluids. Painkillers may be recommended if there is a lot of discomfort or disruption of sleep patterns. In severe cases corticosteroids may be prescribed if there is compromised breathing or severe inflammation

The Epstein Barr virus is a member of the herpes virus so can recur when the body is run down or under stress. An Epstein Barr Syndrome cure is focused on eliminating symptoms and ensuring that the syndrome does not return. Fortunately alternative medicine has a lot to offer in terms of boosting the immune system, reducing symptoms and keeping the virus at bay in the long term.

Liposuction Lymphedema – A Form of Treatment

Survivors of breast cancer treatment can now look forward to a new technique for treating lymphedema -liposuction for lymphedema is being promoted as another option available to patients. There are still some reservations among doctors, however. While some feel that this is a radical new method, there are others who feel liposuction would only aggravate lymphedema and hence patients should continue the decongestive therapy along with compression bandages. Recently, in Sweden, Dr. Brorson has used liposuction for treating patients with post-mastectomy arm lymphedema. The procedure was a success and about 70 patients who had undergone the treatment found that the swelling reduced completely and did not recur.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes surplus fat from the thigh area or the stomach. Incisions are made to extract the extra fat; similarly, in liposuction lymphedema treatment, 15-20 incisions are made on the affected arm of the patient. The controversy is about the surgical incisions which, doctors feel, may complicate matters for the patient. However, liposuction is performed only on those patients who have long-standing lymphedema and who do not respond to the usual therapy of massage and bandaging. Such patients usually have a very severe case of lymphedema with no skin pitting.

In normal circumstances, the body depends upon the lymphatic system to take care of the healing process. Lymphedema is the result of the injury of the lymph vessels and an individual suffering from it has poor healing capability. Surgeons therefore opine that since liposuction involves surgical incisions, these may cause wounds and swelling in the lymphedema arm. Poor healing and a slow immune system make lymphedema patients prone to infections, which is not a good scenario for performing any kind of surgery.

The liposuction therapy for lymphedema patients conducted by Dr. Brorson has been accepted by the European Community. However, it is suggested only for patients with severe symptoms of lymphedema with no skin pitting. The procedure should also be performed only by trained and licensed surgeons. Even after liposuction surgery, the patients must continue to use the compression bandages. Taking the reduction of the arm into consideration, compression garments are tailor-made for the patients. During the course of a year after the surgery, arm measurements are taken to make new compression sleeves so as to sustain the reduction in arm volume.

Some cases of lymphedema have been the result of a liposuction surgery that was not done right. Liposuction for lymphedema patients may even otherwise be a risky proposition and the procedure may not have lasting effects. The 70 patients who have undergone liposuction treatment need to be monitored for the next seven years to find out if the treatment was indeed successful.

Liposuction is not meant to treat or correct the lymphatic system, so it is not a cure for lymphedema. Lymphedema can only be managed by taking certain precautions and taking steps to delay the onset. Persons who have had surgery for removal of the lymph nodes must be alert to any signs of the condition. Bandaging of the arm and exercises can prove useful to reduce the severity of the condition.

Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables has been associated with improved cardiovascular outcomes. In one clinical trial, published in the June 19, 2001, edition of the Annals of Internal Medicine, subjects in the highest quintile of fruit and vegetable consumption had a 20% reduction in relative risk of coronary heart disease as compared with the quintile with the lowest intake. Most of this benefit was related to green leafy vegetables and vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables.

Data from two major studies, the Nurses’ Health study with 71,910 enrolled women (1984) and the Health Professionals’ Follow-up Study with 37,725 enrolled men (1986) was published in the Nov. 3, 2004 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. At baseline, all participants were free of major chronic disease. In both studies, fruit and vegetable intake was inversely associated with the development of major chronic diseases and cardiovascular disease. The reduction in cardiovascular disease was also noted in smokers.

Results of the Life Span Study, an ongoing study of 40,349 persons exposed and not exposed to radiation from Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings was published in the October 2003 issue of Stroke. Daily consumption of green or yellow vegetables and fruits ( irrespective of other factors in both groups ) was associated with a protective effect for total stroke, and cerebral infarction mortality in both men and women. Risk reduction for bleeding inside the brain, called intracerebral hemorrhage, was 32% in men and 30% in women

Colored fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants. Blue/purple fruits and vegetables like blueberries, purple grapes, beetroot, eggplant and plums contain health-promoting phytochemicals such as anthocyanins and phenolics. Green vegetables like green grapes, broccoli, green peppers, spinach, green cabbage, peas and green beans contain phytochemicals such as lutein and indoles. White, tan, and brown fruits and vegetables such as bananas, cauliflower, garlic, onions, mushrooms and potatoes contain varying amounts of phytochemicals including allicin and selenium. Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as mangoes, papaya, lemon, carrots, pumpkin, apricots, sweet corn and yellow squash contain antioxidants such as vitamin C as well as carotenoids and bioflavonoids. Red fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, cherries, pomegranates, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, radishes and beets contain health promoting lycopene and anthocyanins. Besides antioxidant activity, fruits and vegetables also help lower blood pressure and provide fiber. Soluble fiber in fruits and vegetables helps block the absorption of cholesterol from food.

A fruit serving is any one of the following: 1 medium raw fruit, 1/2 grapefruit, mango, or papaya, 3/4 cup juice, 1/2 cup berries or cut-up fruit, 1/2 cup canned, frozen, or cooked fruit or 1/4 cup dried fruit.

Eating fruits and vegetables are associated with other benefits too. Good intake has been shown guard against cataract and macular degeneration, two common causes of vision loss and afflicting millions of Americans over age sixty-five. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may also have a cancer-preventive effect. Consumption has been associated with a reduced rate of cancers of the mouth and pharynx, esophagus, stomach, colon-rectum, larynx, lung, ovary , bladder, and kidney. It is estimated that one third of all cancer deaths in the United States could be avoided through appropriate dietary modification. Besides soluble fiber, fruits and vegetables also contain indigestible fiber. This sops up water like a sponge and expands when it passes through the digestive tract. This helps regulate bowel movements and can relieve or prevent constipation. Insoluble fiber also may help prevent diverticulosis and diverticulitis. Recent data suggests that fruits and vegetables can also fight the functional decline with aging and delay the onset of Alzhiemer’s disease.

Because each different fruit and vegetable group contains different phytochemicals, one color fruit group is not enough. You get the best health protection by eating regularly from each color group. Just add a different fruit and/or vegetable to all meals and snacks and you will be able to meet your daily requirements. Phytochemicals in whole foods such as fruits and vegetables appear to have additive and synergistic effects, leading to cardiovascular protection. This benefit unfortunately does not appear to work with pills or extracts.

Healthy people who want to prevent heart attacks also find support at the Y. Motivated, often, by the illness or sudden death of a close friend or relative, they sign up for rigorous stress testing and blood tests to determine the health of their hearts and arteries and the risk of future trouble. Those who pass the tests with flying colors are sent on their way, says Bronz. 'Whatever you're doing, we tell them, keep it up!' Those with a medium to high risk of heart disease – about 10 per cent of the people tested – are invited to join the programme. Like the cardiac patients, they receive individually designed exercise schedules, advice from the nutritionist, stress counseling from the social worker and encouragement from the nurse.

'That's why the programme works so well – it does not just come at prevention from one aspect,' says nutritionist Gail Levely. 'It's comprehensive.'
Participants, she adds, seem uncommonly receptive to nutritional advice. 'Some come to see me periodically for counseling on weight loss or to see if their diets are OK. I encourage a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet, .lots of whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables, less beef and more chicken and fish. They are really open to change. '
Barbara Eisenstein, whose years as a coronary care unit nurse have taught her the need for programmes like Downstate's, is particularly enthusiastic. 'Once someone gets into the physical aspect of the programme, it becomes a way of life,' she says. 'It gives him or her a wholly different outlook, and it's all to the good.'
That, in effect, is the fundamental idea of ​​the Downstate programme – to start both patients and non-patients on the path to a healthier, more vigorous lifestyle. 'All we try to do is form a lifetime habit of exercise,' says Charles Bronz. 'We encourage people to be on their own.' More than a few of his patients have, in fact, become 'enthusiastic exercise addicts', Dr Stein says.
But what about risks? Everyone has heard tales of stress tests interrupted by fatalities, and of apparently healthy middle-aged men found dead on the side of the running track.

One study that Dr Stein likes to cite shows the likelihood of death or serious complications in the course of a stress test to be 1 in 200,000. In a good, modem centre, he speculates, the risk may be even less. 'We do very careful screening before exercise testing, we always have a doctor and a nurse trained in ECG and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and there's always a full set of cardiac-arrest equipment. With better monitoring devices, we can pick up early warning signs of when to stop a test. '
Exercise itself, Dr Stein grants, does involve some increased risk for a heart patient. 'We minimize it by bringing your heart rate higher, when we test you on the treadmill, than it will be when you train. And overall, we lower the daily risk of the individual by putting him in a training programme.

If you exercise enough to train, in other words, then running for the bus on a windy day will involve less physical stress than it would otherwise. '

In the years since the programme began, he adds, 'we've found out that people's hearts and bodies are much sturdier after a heart attack than we had thought. We're comfortable prescribing 'more exercise than we used to – we seem to do it safely.'
Similarly, he says, much of the anxiety about running for healthy people is – exaggerated. For a vigorous, active person under 40, without symptoms or significant risk factors (such as overweight or smoking), 'a stress test may be an unnecessary precaution. If you're in your late 40s, though, a stress test would be appropriate every three or four years. ' And the 'competitive nut' who pushes himself the extra two mile $, or who ignores the heat of summer, may be moving into a high risk zone, Dr Stein adds. 'And if you feel an irregularity in your heartbeat or you start to have chest pains you've never had before, be prudent and see your doctor.'

Heart Disease and Protein Needs

Cardiovascular disease kills over 16 million people worldwide every year and is the direct cause of over 30% of all deaths. In the United States, both heart disease and strokes account for over 40% of all adult deaths (Source: Natural News 2006). In 2006, there were over 450,000 coronary bypass surgeries performed in the United States and there were over two thousand heart transplant surgeries the following year. (Source: The Texas Heart Institute Heart Information Center). The risk for developing heart disease of any kind can depend on a number of factors, including:

– Family history

– Weight

– Diet and exercise habits

– Smoking

– Gender

– Other health risk factors

Having a family history of any type of heart disease may increase your risk of developing certain conditions and may also increase your risk for heart attack or stroke, even without other risk factors being present.

Weight is one of the major risk factors for heart disease, especially with diseases that are caused by clogged arteries and plaque buildup. Weight can be most dangerous when it includes having a BMI of 27 or more and a waist to hip ratio of.9 or more. A woman’s waist measurement should be 33 inches or less. A quick look at your shape is also very telling as well: if you resemble an apple, with most of your weight above the hipline, you are at greater risk of heart disease than those who are pear shaped, or carrying their weight below the hips.

Diet and exercise habits are also an important risk factor to consider. It is recommended that you should get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. (Source: Ammer, 2005). The choice that you make for exercise is entirely up to you, but your doctor may have some suggestions as well. Good choices for exercise include walking, yoga, swimming and other water sports. A healthy diet is also important, including all of the important nutrients. The diet that is suggested by the American Heart Association is an important one. The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is also a valid suggestion.

While smoking is known as a risk factor for a number of other diseases, its role in heart disease, including heart attack and stroke, is very important to keep in mind as well, especially for those who have the other risk factors. Smoking raises the risk of heart disease in women five times or more than nonsmoking women of the same age.

It was long thought that most types of heart disease struck men more often than women, however, the dangers of heart disease for women have become more thoroughly researched in the recent years. Women do tend to get heart disease later in life, however, and it tends to be more severe. It is now the leading cause of death in women who are over 66 years old and claims six times more than the number of breast cancer deaths (Source: Ammer, 2005).

Diabetes, a serious disease on its own, can also raise the risks of heart disease by damaging the arteries, raising the blood pressure and possibly worsening the cholesterol levels. Having a poor overall lipid profile is also a dangerous risk to keep in mind. Women who have reached the age of menopause that are not taking estrogen may face the same risk of heart disease as a man who is ten years younger.

Diet Suggestions for Heart Disease (Before Heart Disease Starts)

Research by the Nurses’ Health Study showed that women who started eating a diet plan similar to that of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) had lowered their risk of heart disease and stroke. DASH is based on healthy proteins (such as plant based rather than animal based protein choices), fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products. The study stated that at the end of period, those eating from this plan were almost 25 percent less likely to have heart disease and almost 20 percent less likely to have a stroke. Protein should be included in any healthy diet and, in fact, is nearly impossible to omit even if it were to be tried. However, the right type and the right balance must be found. Protein should not make up more than 35% of the daily calories according to the American Heart Association. Treatment For Tuberculosis in Ayurveda

It may affect the bones, the membranes of the brain, leading to meningitis, or the glands when it is called scorfula. It may be caused when a person pricks himself with anything sharp infected the with germs, or inhalation of dust particles mixed with the tiny microbe. As the main factor responsible for the disease is the susceptibility to it, as a constitution weakened by continuous ill-health, a lowered power of resistance, heredity, an unhealthy atmosphere, excessive use of intoxicants, over-indulgence in sex hard work asthma and diseases of the metabolism like diabetes. It is a disease of filth and poverty and does not attack persons living in clean surroundings and having sufficient means to feed themselves properly.

In Ayurveda it is called Rajyakshma, the king of disease. Moon, the king among the satellites of the earth, according to our mythology, was supposed to have been afflicted because of a curse of Brahma, the creator and hence the name, Rajyakshma has been given to this ailment.

In the early stages of the disease, there is an irritating cough, particularly in the morning, either without an expectoration or with a clear mucus or phlegm. The first sign of the disease is a blood-flecked phlegm accompanied by fever in the evenings and below normal temperatures in the early morning and also night sweats. When the symptoms are aggravated and emaciation has set in, the second stage is supposed to have been reached. If extreme care is not taken and treatment is not done it may spread to the throat and the intestines. The terminal stage comes when the illness reaches deep into the lungs and they are full of cavities. The voice of the patient may become husky at this stage, there may be diahorrea and extreme prostration, with the patient being unable to leave the bed and finally. The death comes because of extensive haemorrhage.

The duration of the illness depends on 4 factors-

(i) The intensity of the infection;

(ii) The age of the patient;

(iii) The stage at which the disease has been recognised; and

(iv) The natural resistance of the body.

If the disease reaches the intestines, there is inflammation of the bowels with impairment of digestion, distension of the stomach, rumbling noises in the abdomen and a persistent ache. If the small intestine is involved, the patient is constipated but when the large intestine becomes seat of the ailment, diahorrea is the result. Emaciation increases faster than in pulmonary TB. In scorfula, or TB of the glands, inflammation is the chief characteristic. Tumours form and they suppurate giving a foul smell. When the disease attacks the bones, the bones start crumbling and a state known as caries of the bones results. When it reaches the spine, there is curvature and the patient is unable even to stand erect. TB of the bones affects young people.

Treatment of tuberculosis has two faces:

(1) preventive, and

(2) curative or remedial.

The preventive aspect is more social than medical. It is from the slums that the disease starts its fatal march. Provision of clean, healthy surroundings with properly ventilated and clean houses is the first imperative. Detection and isolation of the victims of the disease is the second most important thing that can be done. Thirdly, the diet is of primary importance. Plenty of milk, butter, black gram eggs, ground of the various varieties, turnips, beet root, spinach and other green vegetables, fruits, etc. are the other preventives. As has been stated earlier, it is a disease of filth and poverty.

The treatment of a case of tuberculosis must start with the isolation of the patient and his removal to a sanitorium if the disease has been detected at a secondary stage. If that is not possible, he should be housed in an airy room where there is enough sunlight.

Garlic is a wonderful drug for in the cure of TB. Thirty grains of garlic boiled in about eight ounces of milk and two pounds of water should be administered in two doses in the day. But the medicine is ready only when the whole decoction has been reduced to one fourth of its original quantity.

Ayurveda recommends Vasa (adhatoda vasica) for tuberculosis. One ounce of the juice from the leaves of the drug given thrice in the day with honey provides relief. But the useful drug is Naradiya Mahalakshami Vilasa Rasa which contains traces of gold. It should be administered in three doses of 200 mg each in the day. Swarna Vasant Malati is the drug in cases where there is excessive fever, sweating and burning sensation on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Rudanti (cressa crestca) given in 2 gm. doses twice daily reduce the virulence of the disease.

Drakshasava should be administered in one ounce doses after meals. It should be mixed with an equal quantity of water. Chyavanaprasha Avaleha is another good remedy to give strength to the patient. The dosage in the beginning should be two teaspoonfuls with milk on an empty stomach twice daily, but as the patient gains strength, it should be increased. Long pepper in powdered form should be given in one teaspoonful doses twice daily.

In the initial stages of the disease, when there is dry cough, fever in the night and weakness, the following medicines should be given:

Suvarna Vasanta Malati Rasa 250 mg.

Praval Pishti 500 mg.

Amritasatva 250 mg.

It should be administered with preserve (murabba) of amla, thrice daily.

In case there is bleeding then the following drugs should be administered.

(1) Vasantamalati 120 mg.

To be taken in morning and evening with goat’s milk.

In cases of high temperatures of tuberculosis, the following prescriptions should be administered:

(1) Muktapanchamrita 120 mg.

Pachanana Rasa 120 mg.

Amritasatva 240 mg.

To be taken morning and evening with honey.

(2) Chandramrita 1 gm.

Sitopaladi 12 gm.

To be mixed with honey and to be used as linctus.

Dried fruits, particularly dried grapes, almond oil, etc. are useful in this condition. Drumsticks, patola and kundru are the best vegetables recommended for a consumptive patient. Products of the goat, its milk, flesh and even urine, are useful for a TB patient.

Marketing Is Buying Customers

Marketing your Jewelery business is nothing more than buying customers.

That's all it is, and the sooner you understand that, the more comfortable you'll be investing money in everything from advertising to sales training and from PR to Customer Relationship Management tools.

When you think about it, anything and everything you do to bring in a new customer, or to get an existing one to do business with you again is marketing. And everything you do to accomplish either of those goals has a cost associated with it.

Run an ad in the local paper or top industry magazine … it costs money.

Some businesses hire a salesman and put him on the street. Even if he's a straight commission guy and you do not pay him until after the sale is made, you still have the cost of recruiting and training. And while you do not pay a salary up-front, in this case, you still pay that commission out of every sale he makes.

PR … that's FREE advertising, right? Do not tell that to the companies who pay public relations companies or internal PR specialists to get that press coverage. Even if you do it entirely yourself, you have to invest time, and we all know, time is money.

No Marketing is Free

No, there is no free lunch in the marketing world. You want new customers or the old ones to come back, it's going to cost you.

You can not avoid this fact, but you can quantify it. You can know how much it costs you to bring in a new customer and how much it takes to get your existing ones coming back.

And while most companies can not tell you what the specific numbers are for these two costs of acquisition, anybody with half a brain can see they should.

How else can you make intelligent, informed, wise decisions about marketing your business?

What was your advertising budget last year? What percentage of it was dedicated to bringing in new prospects, customers, clients or patients? How many did you actually bring in?

The Formula

If you spent $ 100,000.00 on advertising last year, but $ 30,000.00 of that was on programs designed to get existing customers to come back again, your new customer acquisition budget for the year was $ 70,000.00. If you brought in 1,000 new customers with that budget, each one of those new customers cost you $ 70.00.

Whether that's good or bad is relative. It depends on what your average ticket is and what your margins are, and how often and how many times a typical customer comes back to buy again. But the important thing is, you now know something critical to help you make marketing investment decisions in the future.

If you run an ad campaign that brings customers in at $ 83.27 each, you know that is not an effective campaign. It may have been a weak offer, or it may have been delivered to the wrong audience. It may have been a sub-par headline, or you may not have bought your media right. But you know you've got a problem if you did not at least match your average cost of acquisition point and you can look to make changes to improve results.

On the other hand, a campaign that yields customers at $ 64.23 a piece is a success. You spent less than normal to bring them in. It's a keeper and should probably be tried again, assuming everything else is equal, like average ticket and pre-disposition of these new customers to return for future purchases at the typical rate.

Power of Testing and Tracking

Tracking these numbers also empowers your negotiating position with the media.

"Look Bob, I know you've got a rate card, but the truth is, your station is costing me $ 97.30 a customer, while KBS across town is bringing them in at $ 68.20. If you want me to keep doing business with me, you're going to have to get me a price that generates new customers at nor more than my $ 70.00 average. "

Now Bob can work with you on price, or he can not. If he does, your cost of acquisition prices remain in line. If not, you can walk away from doing business with Bob's station and never lose a wink of sleep. He was just too expensive for what you get. Move that marketing investment to a place that hits your numbers.

Of course to figure any of this out, you've got to be tracking your results on a regular basis. That means making specific offers and a specific call to action in your marketing efforts. You ask people to come in, mention a specific ad, bring in a coupon, call a specific number or extension, or mention a specific code.

Example

We have a client who is testing local radio. He is looking at three different radio stations. After one week he has gotten responses from only one of the stations. How does he know? Because he made different offers on each station.

Next he'll switch the ads so the offer # 1, which ran on station "A", now runs on station "B." Offer # 2, which was on station "B" will now be on station "C", and the offer on station "C" now goes to station "A."

If the responses still come from the same station, our client will know it's the station that is accounting for the response and he can spend more money there, and less or none with the "loser" stations. If the responses follow the offer, he'll know he has found a winning offer and he can replace the loser offers, and keep using all three stations.

Of course, the number of spots running on each station are the same, as are the dayparts in which the commercials are running, so he's trying to eliminate variables other than station and offer. This is something of a simplification of the process, you get the idea.

Bottom Line

The point is, you want to keep close tabs on what it's costing you to bring in a new customer in your Jewelery business. Naturally, the goal is to "buy" them for as little as possible, and then ethically get as much out of them as you can, in servicing them over time.

Not too different from stocks … buy low, sell high. Only when it comes to buying customers, you can have a lot more control over the market.

So You Have a Headache – What If it is a Brain Tumor Headache?

The fear of brain  tumor  headaches is what drives many patients to their primary care doctor or to a headache clinic. Most times they present to the office afraid of their symptoms and convinced they may have a brain  tumor . Believe it or not, clinicians do take this seriously but it is dependent on the patient’s symptoms and the results of the physical exam.

When a headache does occur from a brain  tumor  it is termed a secondary headache because some other medical problem is causing the pain. This is also known as an organic headache. Brain  tumors  are rare, even in people with recurring headache. When they do occur about 50% of the patients present with headache, and many will also have seizures and other neurological problems such as memory loss and personality changes.

Brain  Tumors  vs Other Headaches

Typical brain  tumor  headaches may have pain all over the head that is throbbing in nature. The headache may be mild in the morning and then progress and worsen during the day. They may also worsen over a period of months. Some people have had migraine type symptoms with  tumors . Some types of  tumors  may obstruct cerebrospinal fluid which results in a headache that is positional..it is relieved when the person lays down.

This is different from other headaches such as tension and migraine which are considered primary headaches (no underlying medical problem). Tension and migraine headaches tend to be throbbing and pulsating headaches and are generally not all over the head.

At times, symptoms and complaints from patients may alert a doctor and these are called “red flags”. Although they can happen with migraines and tension headaches they might require further workup. Red flags include headaches that worsen with coughing, sneezing or bending over. Any weakness is a concern as are visual changes, memory and personality changes.

Certain things put people at risk for  tumors  in the brain. These include:

  • smoking
  • previous history of breast, prostate, lung or neck cancer
  • smoking
  • smoking (get it?)

Neuroimaging In Brain  Tumor  Headaches

More often than not, headache is not the complaint that leads to a  tumor . Most patients present with other neurological symptoms described above. I should note that the symptoms can also include dizziness, tinnitus and incontinence. When an exam is abnormal and a patient has visual defects or weakness then either a CT or MRI of the brain is needed. Contrast MUST be given as parts of a  tumor  will appear different on imaging when contrast is present. After imaging, the doctor may have to do a lumbar puncture or spinal tap if the results of the imaging warrant this.

Treatment Of Brain  Tumors  and the Headache

Treatment of  tumors  is directly related to the type of  tumor . Some need surgery, some need chemotherapy and radiation and sometimes, with benign  tumors  they are just watched for awhile. This means serial MRI’s every couple of months. The headaches are treated symptomatically and generally respond well to steroids or anti-inflammatories. Many times the brain  tumor  headaches disappear after surgery.

Bronchitis And Pneumonia – Various Differences Explained

It is very difficult to understand the differences between bronchitis and pneumonia. Both are diseases of the lower respiratory system and have an equally adverse effect on pulmonary air passages. Proper knowledge about the difference between pneumonia and bronchitis facilitates correct diagnosis, a factor that is of utmost importance in the effective management and treatment of respiratory disorders.

What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a severe infection of the lungs in which pus and other fluids fill the alveoli and prevent the free flow of air into the lungs. Due to this, the body does not get sufficient oxygen, and the cells are unable to function normally. Headache, excessive sweating, fatigue, and lack of appetite are some of the symptoms of pneumonia. The condition, if not treated with care, can cause death.

– Group A or streptococcus pyogenes is also responsible for pneumonia.

– Gram negative bacteria causes certain cases of community-acquired pneumonia. It also attacks people suffering from chronic lung disorders and children suffering from cystic fibrosis.

Certain viruses such as SARS (severe acute respiratory distress syndrome) virus, adenoviruses, herpesviruses, influenza viruses, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and HPV (human parainfluenza virus) also cause pneumonia.

Types of Pneumonia

There are different types of pneumonia.

Atypical Pneumonia: Bacteria are responsible for these types of pnuemonia, including walking pneumonia. A person suffering from this variety could have a dry cough. It is a mild variety, and the patient need not be admitted to the hospital.

Aspiration Pneumonia: In this condition, bacteria are present in the oral cavity. If the bacteria remain in the oral cavity, they are harmless. However, if they penetrate the lungs, perhaps due to a weakening of the gag reflex, they could cause pneumonia.

Opportunistic pneumonia: As long as your immune system is in good condition, you don’t have to worry about contracting this disease. However, people with weak immune systems should take special care not to get infected.

Regional and occupational pneumonia: For example, exposure to chemicals or cattle can cause this condition.

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is a disorder characterized by inflammation of the bronchi or air passages that transport air from the trachea to the lungs. Inflammation of the bronchi leads to the accumulation of mucus, which causes the blocking of the bronchial cells. The body then takes refuge in the cough mechanism to get rid of the accumulated mucus. Unfortunately, cough, while it gets rid of excess mucus, also makes the air passages more susceptible to infection. Moreover, if the infection continues, the tissues of the bronchi might get damaged.

Types of bronchitis

Basically, there are two types of bronchitis–acute and chronic bronchitis.

Acute bronchitis is a short-term condition accompanied by a bad flu or a cold. It can keep you in a miserable condition for around two weeks. In certain cases, viral bronchitis can last for 8-12 weeks.

Chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition that can last anywhere from three weeks to two years. It always comes with a danger of relapse.
