How to Ease the Sciatic Nerve Pain

Do you know what is the feeling of sciatic nerve pain? Did you ever feel an ache so strong that it was very difficult for you to stand up? Often people experience an unbearable pain just doing something very simple and they don’t know why. When this happens, the most probable diagnosis is that of “sciatica.”

How can you identify sciatica? Sciatica is a condition in which what’s called the “sciatic nerve” is affected by inflammation. This important nerve is positioned at the bottom end of the vertebral column and it goes down to the buttocks zone, and to various parts of the leg and foot.

Normally, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body and they can vary from a burning sensation or tingling feeling to a strong pain that crosses the areas above mentioned. It is possible, in some cases, that the sciatic nerve pain is present on both legs.

This is what scares many patients because they don’t understand what’s happening. The sciatic nerve pain can be so strong that they are fearing even to become crippled.

In addition to the pain, which is sometimes very strong, a sciatica sufferer can experience muscular weakness, numbness, and difficulty in moving or controlling the legs. It is very important to exactly identify what are the symptoms, because the treatments for the sciatic nerve pain will vary according to the origin of the pain itself.

There are several different causes of sciatica ranging from arthritis to a slipped disc and from an abscess to a pinched nerve. Fortunately, almost always, sciatica is easy to cure.

The most common cure for sciatic nerve pain is to ease the pressure on the nerve root through surgery, drugs, or natural methods. If you want to avoid surgery there are many natural sciatic nerve pain cures. In alternative you can try a combination of natural and medical treatments that will often include physical workouts and stretching exercises.

In the case of an acute attack of sciatica it’s better to lay in bed for the first few days to avoid irritating the sciatic nerve by getting up and down repeatedly.

Warm baths are a pain killer for sciatica sufferers, at least momentarily. However it’s better to avoid them if the sciatic nerve pain is caused by inflammation, because the inflammation will be increased by a prolonged exposition to the heat – and the swelling will increase too.

A preferred therapy is the application of ice packs on the aching area for almost 20 minutes. This treatment can be repeated every 2 hours and it will be not so comfortable, but it will greatly reduce the swelling.

Another effective method to soothe the sciatic nerve pain, at least temporarily, is the use of mineral ice. On the contrary the use of some drugs, prescribed by some doctors, can be addictive and, in some cases, very dangerous. As you probably already know many medicines have unpleasant side effects on your body.

Finally there’s the massage therapy that can be very helpful to avoid surgery and to better align your vertebral column for longer time. At this stage light exercises will be very effective, and so will be stretching. The goal of this physical activity is to prevent your muscles from stiffening.

There are more alternative treatments that will be helpful to treat the sciatic nerve pain: actually there are a lot of techniques like acupuncture, biofeedback, acupressure, guided imagery, herbal therapies, homeopathy, etc.

And here we come to the last resort, the surgical method which consist in removing the part of the disc that’s causing the sciatic nerve pain. This is really an extreme solution to try only if the sciatica pain is too strong and nothing can relieve it.

Help For a Sore Throat

When you have a sore throat, it hurts to talk. It hurts to swallow. Your throat feels tight and you feel miserable. A sore throat is more likely to send you to the doctor than a cold.

However, if you do go to the doctor with a sore throat you may not receive a proper treatment.
Quite often doctors prescribe antibiotics to cure a sore throat. However, antibiotics are only effective in treating illnesses caused by bacteria. Most sore throats are the result of cold and flu

An antibiotic is not effective in treating a viral infection. In addition, taking antibiotics unnecessarily can build up a resistance in your body and when you really do need an antibiotic it might not be as effective.

So what can you do? First, you need to determine if the sore throat is flu-related. If so, you will have other symptoms such as fatigue and body aches.

If the sore throat is flu-related, you should avoid over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin. Instead, use anesthetic throat sprays or lozenges.

They will quickly relieve pain by numbing the delicate throat tissues on contact. The most effective throat sprays and lozenges contain dyclonine so look for that ingredient on the label.

There are also some home remedies. These may not be prescribed by doctors but over the years they have worked for many sufferers. An age-old one is chicken soup. Another is cabbage broth. Chicken soup has bee studied by a University of Nebraska medical team and found to really relieve cold symptoms. However, researchers are not sure which ingredients in the soup actually do this. But laboratory studies have shown that the soup combats inflammation and gives your immunity system a boost bringing about a faster recovery.

Inhaling steam for about twenty minutes will also relieve pain and dryness by shrinking the swollen tissues. You can use a facial steamer or take a hot steamy shower. You can also fill a bowl with boiling water, hold a towel over your head and breathe in the steam.

Zinc lozenges have been found to help a sore throat. You should suck on one every two to three hours for relief. Be sure that the lozenge you purchase contains at least 12.8 mg. of zinc. This cure was reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine and doctors believe the zinc boosts the body's immune system, which allows it to fight off the virus. There are also over-the-counter nasal sprays that contain zinc.

Another home remedy is gargling with warm salt water.

One other of Grandma's home cures is now recommended in a book entitled "Staying Healthy with Nutrition" by Elson Haas, MD You mix together 3/4 teaspoon of honey, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and 1/4-teaspoon cayenne pepper. Then you slowly swallow the mixture.

If your sore throat is accompanied by swollen neck glands, fever, chills and red and white patches at the back of your throat, you may have a strep throat. To confirm this, your doctor will take a throat culture. Strep throat is bacterial caused so your doctor will probably prescribe an antibiotic.

Tonsil Stones – When Do You Need Antibiotics?

Tonsils are not unwanted as they are not only good but also serve various necessary immunological functions. They protect our body from particular diseases that there is no need to remove them unless and until they create serious problems in us. They can range from smaller sized stones which might not be visible to naked eye to the very large ones resembling bookends when peered inside the throat. When they become very big in size the sufferers might find it hard to breathe or swallow that their removal would be inevitable. The collected strep in tonsils many times needs to come outside the throat region. Many a times they can get infected and create unnecessary problems.

Tonsil stones can become big because of viral infection, strep’s random bouts and mononucleosis can sometimes be treated without the need for surgery. Most often mononucleosis and viral infections would resolve all by themselves in a period of time with just simple gargling and consumption of hot soups. Strep tonsillitis that are often diagnosed in the laboratories respond in a good manner to short term exposure of antibiotics like erythromycin, penicillin or plain ‘ol.

Tonsil stones can form in people who suffer from repeated tonsillitis bouts or throat infections and can result in making the tonsils swell and form holes or crypts where dead cells, mucous and bacteria get trapped. The debris in the crypts rot and decompose due to the warm and moist throat environment conditions and get calcified to become smaller size particles similar to stones. The actual tonsil stone composition can differ from one person to another but they might contain a minimum of two various kinds of matter in them.

In some the disease can recur even after they are extracted. The nasty smelling lumps can annoy anyone. There are many reasons for the recurring of diseases. In some it might be due to the hereditary or genetic conditions while in other it might be because of bad oral hygiene, irregular flossing and brushing of teeth. Some time they might be formed due to the throat infection’s side effects of administering antibiotics. Diseases could be made to loosen by prodding those using lengthy objects like cotton wool buds or toothbrush in a gentle way.

Most of the time doctors feel that the disease need antibiotics to cure them but they might only provide relief for a temporary period of time. Only a good and healthy lifestyle, regular exercising and diet can prevent them from recurring.

Home Remedies for Curing Tonsil Stones

Tonsillectomy not only can lead to various health problems later but also does not come at a cheaper price. The surgery can also hinder day to day activities for some time. Hence, it is avoided most often. In fact, there are natural and scientifically proven ways to get rid of tonsil stones so they never return. It’s absolutely not necessary to go for a long, drawn out surgery or wasting your money on expensive nasal sprays and tablets. Follow a step-by-step program that will show you exactly how to get rid of your tonsil stones naturally and ensure they never come back!

Why Should You Take an Enzyme Supplement?

Enzymes are actually protein chemicals that carry a significant energy factor required for each chemical reaction and action that takes place in your body. Every body tissue, organ, as well as all “100 trillion” cells depend on the metabolic enzymes reaction and energy factor.

Simply put, enzymes turn your food into energy then release this energy to be utilized in your body. The body is capable of naturally producing both metabolic and digestive enzymes.

Approximately, there are 1,300 different enzymes in the “human cell” capable of combining with coenzymes in order to form about 100,000 a variety of chemicals which are responsible of making possible for you to hear, see, feel, digest food, move and think.

Because 90 percent of food consumed by average Americans is processed or cooked at temperatures higher than “118 F”, it results to less nutrition, incomplete digestion and stress on the digestive system, that leads to more digestive difficulties.

The heat, whether from, steaming, micro waving, roasting, broiling, sauteing, stir frying, pasteurizing, and other sources involved in food preparation destroys the enzymes in food, reason for taking enzyme supplement. Statistics estimates point out that about 20 to 75 million Americans suffer from digestive disorders at some point.

Generally, enzymes deliver nutrients, digest food, carry toxic wastes away, purify your blood, deliver hormones by way of fortifying and feeding your endocrine system, feed your brain and balance triglyceride and cholesterol levels in the body.

All these contributing factors contribute aids in strengthening your body’s immune system.

Can raw food guarantee sufficient enzymes body requirement?

Digestive enzymes commonly are secreted alongside your digestive tract in order to break down food into wastes and nutrients. Metabolic enzymes accelerate chemical reactions inside the cells that results to energy production and detoxification.

Food enzymes actually are introduced in your body by way of raw foods however it only sufficient to digest that specific food (the raw food that you consumed).

Note that raw foods do not supply extra enzymes to digest processed or cooked food.

Besides, even if consuming raw foods seems a great solution, generally, it is not practical and medically not advisable because of bacterial contamination risk and many foods must not be consumed raw such as poultry, meat, beans and eggs.

Enzyme supplements benefits

The only way obtain and replace lost enzymes is through supplemental enzymes that will enable you to obtain more food nutrition and the digestive organs can expend less effort on food digestion yet more effort on energy to keep the body healthy.

Enzyme supplements “break down fats” effectively

Lipase digests fat. If this type of enzyme is added daily to your food, it will break don or digest fat deposits in your digestive tract.

This effectively takes off the stress in your liver, pancreas and gallbladder. Enzyme supplements aids in shedding off excess weight A lot of overweight individuals suffer from metabolism imbalance; your “endocrine system” is responsible for your metabolism. So once you are capable of fortifying your endocrine system, you will get regular bowel movements and digest food instead of turning it to fat.

Enzyme supplements improves your mental capacity

Your body utilizes glucose which is called from and stored in your liver to fortify your hypothalamus. Your hypothalamus is the one that directs the endocrine system as well as balances emotions.

Plant enzymes which are derived from protein rich foods, help strengthen your liver to successfully perform this function. “Red blood cells” carry nutrients and oxygen to the muscles, glands and all body organs, including your brain.

However, nutrients can be only delivered all through your body by way of the “enzyme delivery system”, that, when not properly accomplished, your body becomes more fatigued resulting to not being able to think clearly.

Enzyme supplements can improve the look of aging skin

Researchers Anthony Cichoke and Amber Ackerson based in Portland Oregon revealed that enzymes combats the skin’s aging process through increasing the skin’s blood supply, supplying it with invigorating nutrients then effectively carry waste products away which is responsible for making the skin look unhealthy and dull.

Complete and proper digestion is very important for maintaining good health. When digestive enzymes are used properly, they can supply substantial benefits to almost everybody, especially those who consume a big amounts of processed and cooked foods.

Type 2 Diabetes – What Foods Should A Diabetic Eat?

Although people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes do have foods they should avoid, there is a massive amount of foods that are allowed. The best choices are the foods lowest in carbohydrate.

While eating the right balance of healthy foods is important, it’s also vitally important for Type 2 diabetics to:

  • maintain as near-normal a blood sugar level as possible.
  • achieve optimal serum lipid levels (normal levels of cholesterol and triglycerides).
  • achieve a healthy blood pressure reading (lower than 140/80 Hg).
  • maintain or reach a reasonable body weight.

While everyone should eat more fruit and vegetables, this is even more important for diabetics. Since many fruits and vegetables are lower in fat and naturally rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients, it makes them a positive addition in many ways. Plus, they are usually high in fiber, which is another plus for diabetics.

But there is a hidden danger with this category. Many fruits contain high levels of sugar. This is why they should be eaten in moderation and only during certain times, such as when they are accompanied by other foods. Eaten alone, they spike blood sugar.

Choose whole fruits, since dried fruits can be very high in sugar. Apples, pears and plums have low glycemic values. Berries are also great choices; you can add them to cereal and salads and are also great for snacking.

Kiwi fruit, passion fruit, cherries grapefruit, lemons and limes are also great

Vegetables also have to be regulated… to a certain point. Depending on where they land on the glycemic index, some vegetables are much better for diabetics than others. Simply saying it’s okay to eat vegetables isn’t good enough: it has to be the right ones, in the right amounts, eaten at the right times.

Starchy vegetables should be avoided; these include potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnip and Swedes. Corn is a grain and should be avoided

Always keep fixings on hand for salads, such as lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers. Don’t forget to use low sugar, low-fat dressings.

Meat is good for diabetics as long as the fat content is monitored. Ask your butcher to remove all visible fats from any cuts of meat.

Lean cuts of meats are great, as long as they are limited in their serving size. Just because meat is extremely lean doesn’t mean you can eat all you want. You still have to take calories into account.

Avoid or minimize smoked meat, bacon, ham, sausages, hot dogs and other small goods. Offal, oysters and mussels are higher in carbohydrate than other meats and seafood; they can be eaten only in smaller amounts.

Looking for anther good source of protein besides meat? Try legumes, cheese, eggs and nuts. And don’t forget poultry and deep ocean fish.

The last category of foods is complex carbs. This is a touchy subject since many diabetics take the stand to completely eliminate carbs from their lives altogether. While carbs should be limited, they are still necessary, as long as they are complex in nature. What does that mean? Regular carbs negatively alter blood sugar levels, but complex carbs actually help to control your blood sugar.

Examples of complex carbs would be brown rice, wheat germ, oatmeal, barley, corn, buckwheat and other assorted grains. Eating these in moderation allows you to splurge on carbs, but in a good way.

  • brown rice is great for casseroles, with stir-fries, or in soups. It has a low glycemic index value.
  • bulgur and barley are alternatives white rice.

These foods can be kept in airtight containers for long periods of time. They contain a variety of nutrients and fiber, and are recommended for a heart-healthy diet. Don’t forget: for people with Type 2 diabetes, the amount is always a consideration.

Diseases Caused by Obesity

What Is The Definition Of Obesity?

The clinical definition of obesity is a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. A BMI of 40 or higher is the definition of morbid obesity. There are lots of free BMI calculators available online if you wish to check your own BMI. The BMI calculator provided by WebMD is quite easy to use.

BMI Calculations Do not Work For Very Muscular People

It should be noted that BMI calculations are confused by people with a large amount of muscle. For example, the boxer Mike Tyson would be have been considered "obese" by BMI calculations even when he was at his most fit. Obviously this is not something that effects the great majority of people.

How Many People Are Obese?

The latest statistics suggest that 32% of adult Americans are now obese. That's very nearly 1 in 3. Although the United States is the "poster child" for obesity, obesity rates are actually raising all over the world.

Obesity Increases The Risk Of These Diseases

1. Diabetes.

2. Cancer.

3. Heart Disease.

4. Liver Disease.

5. Sleep Apnea.

6. Osteoarthritis.

These are only some of the many health problems (diseases) caused by obesity.

Increased Risk Of Death

A BMI of 32 or above is associated with a doubled risk of death.

Reversing & Preventing Obesity

How to reverse and / or prevent obesity? The simple answer is diet & exercise. Many people simply eat too much of the wrong foods and live a sedentary lifestyle which leads to weight gain and eventually obesity. Of course that simple answer does not mean that it's simple for people to lose weight.

The Day Off Diet

Most diets fail because they are too difficult for people to stick with and / or they make the body go into starvation mode. The Day Off Diet solves both of those problems with it's weekly "day off" which allows the dieter to eat anything they want once a week. This lets the dieter satisfy their cravings while also boosting the metabolism. Unlike other less successful diets, The Day Off Diet does not require any calorie counting or carb counting.

The Importance Of Strength Training

Increasing muscle is a very under utilized way of fighting obesity. Each pound of muscle burns 50 calories per day even at rest, compared to a pound of fat which burns only 2 calories per day! By adding even 10 pounds of muscle to your body you will be able to burn much more fat. This will make you look far better and will also greatly increase your metabolism for long term weight loss. It will help you to keep the weight off.

The Day Off Diet includes a great strength training program free of charge with the purchase of the online diet plan.

Babies With Thrush and Diaper Rash

There are different signs and symptoms that let a parent know when their child has a diaper rash. It can be a chronic issue that is very uncomfortable and sometimes painful. It should be treated properly and not left ignored. Diaper rash itself can also be a symptom of another underlying problem that your baby may have. Thrush is a form of a yeast infection just like other rashes are. Some rashes are caused by Candida albicans which is a type of yeast. If your baby does have thrush, it is not uncommon that they will also have a rash from their diaper.

There are side effects that thrush causes that will help you determine if your baby has it or not. The symptoms look different from a rash caused by a diaper. Thrush only occurs in the mouth and there will by small white patches on the roof of the mouth, the sides, and on their tongue. Most parents say that it looks like there is milk stuck on their baby's mouth. Usually newborns develop this type of rash and it'll occur up to four to six weeks after birth.

Unlike other rashes, thrush can go untreated. It usually does not cause a lot of pain or irritation. If your child does appear to be uncomfortable, you may need to treat it with an antifungal like you do with other rashes such as diaper rash. If there is discomfort, it will usually only be when they are feeding. The rash should clear up within a couple of weeks on its own. If it does not, you may need to consult your doctor about the rash.

Unlike a diaper rash, there is nothing that can be done to prevent thrush from occurring. Rash caused from A diapers can be Prevented and Treated with diaper ointment . Thrush is not as severe as some other types of rashes that can not be left untreated. If your child does develop thrush, it is more important for you to treat the diaper rash that may also appear because of the Candida albicans. If you are breastfeeding, you also need to watch for thrush to appear on your own body. It can pass from child to mother and vice versa. You can treat thrush on your body with an antifungal.

If your newborn develops these types of rashes, be sure to give them a little extra love and attention. Be sure that the rashes do not get too severe or bothersome to your baby. Thrush is not dangerous to your child's health but it should not be ignored either. Treat any rashes that may develop.

How to Get Rid of a Cold Sore Overnight

I’m you are like me, you are sick and tired of getting cold sores. When you feel the tingling or burning sensation on your skin you know that one is on its way. They can be painful, embarrassing, and incredibly frustrating. You are probably wonder what is the quickest way to get rid of it, even overnight.

Depending on what stage the infected area is in it may be difficult to get rid of it overnight. Cold sores are caused by a virus that sits dormant in the body so you can never know when an outbreak it about to occur. Preventing these outbreaks is the best way to fight back. Catching it early gives you the best chance of making it disappear by morning. And I KNOW you want that thing gone!

When you first feel the symptoms of an outbreak, the best thing to do is apply a topical treatment to the infected area. Do this FAST before it gets any worse and you go crazy. You can find these products at your local drug store. Even toothpaste has been proven effective to kill the bacteria and virus. Wash your face and hands and apply a generous amount on the cold sore or tingling area. Leave on the treatment as long as possible.

Be sure to leave the area alone and avoid picking or scratching at it. By constantly touching it you run the risk of infecting other parts of your face. This will make it much harder to get rid of it fast and could cause a more serious outbreak.

Again the best way to prevent these annoying outbreaks is to stop them before they ever occur. Vitamin C and E are helpful when supplemented with a healthy diet. Lower your intake of acidic foods as these tend to cause frequent outbreaks. Prolonged exposure to the sun will also cause the virus to strike.

Why It's So Hard to Eliminate Nail Fungus

If you've been trying to eliminate nail fungus for any period of time, I suspect that you are beginning to form an entirely new definition for the word "frustration". I know, because I've been there. At one time, I had what I thought was the most severe toenail fungus infection that had ever afflicted a human. It was not, of course, but you could not tell me that at the time.

I talked to my doctor about taking an anti-fungal medication, but, when he started talking about all of the possible side effects that came along with it, I decided to try and find another treatment that could eliminate toenail fungus without those risks. And I did … try, that is .

You probably know that it's very easy to find information on non-medical ways to eliminate nail fungus, and I tried most of them. Over-the-counter remedies, vinegar, tea tree oil, Vick's, and many others, all to no avail. I came to find out later that the problem was not so much what I was using, but what I was not using, instead.

The heart of any nail fungus infection lives and thrives beneath your toenail or fingernail, in what's called the "nail bed". In more severe cases, it will also spread to the skin around your nail, but it's true home is under your nail, and that's where you have to attack it to be successful.

But, sometimes even that is not enough. Like all fungi, onychomycosis fungi (that 's it's real name!) Reproduces by producing spores, similar to the way plants produce seeds. And, like seeds, these spores can sometimes lay dormant for a long period of time before "taking root" and starting to grow. This means that, even if you kill all of the live fungus, if any viable spores remain, re-infection is only a matter of time.

And time was the one thing that I was not using enough. I kept thinking that it was the remedies that were useless when, in fact, I just was not treating the infection long enough! If you're going to try to eliminate nail fungus with one of the many home remedies that you read about (vinegar, etc.), you'll have to treat the infected nails for 6 months to a year to be effective.

One of the benefits of using a medical or over-the-counter treatment is the fact that they've been tested and the duration of treatments established. Home remedies lack this advantage, and the possibility of stopping your treatments too soon is very real. From my experience, I would suggest using your home remedy until you are absolutely sure that all of the infection is gone, and then treat for 3 more months.

Latex Allergy – A Healthcare Worker Problem

If you are a healthcare worker you may know about the dangers of a latex allergy but this allergen can affect the average person more than you know. A latex allergy is a reaction caused by the protein in rubber called latex. Most people associate latex with the gloves that are used in hospitals and daycare settings but latex can be found in places you would not suspect. Here are just a few of the products that can contain latex:

  • Gloves
  • Balloons
  • Condoms
  • Children's Toys
  • Rubber Bands
  • Computer Mouse Pads
  • Diapers
  • Sports Equipment

Unfortunately in today's world allergens can be found everywhere. Environmental allergens include pollution, smog, pollen, dust and mold. Food allergies are also very common with allergies to items such as dairy, nuts, shellfish, wheat and eggs. The last kind we will discuss are contact allergies to various items such as nickel and various chemicals. An allergy to latex is a contact form of allergy in that you have to touch it to get a reaction though the air can even contain latex particles when certain powder is applied or coated over the gloves. As can be seen by the short list of possible latex sources simple daily routines can become very dangerous for those that suffer from a latex allergy.

Latex Allergy Symptoms

As with many allergies the symptoms of an allergy to latex can be mild or severe. It all depends on how sensitive that person is. Typical symptoms can include:

  • red, itchy or watery eyes
  • runny nose
  • sneezing
  • rashes
  • hives
  • coughing
  • possible anaphylaxis (shortness of breath or shock)

Some other symptoms for those who wear latex gloves include cracks on their hands as well as rashes. Ironically the symptoms may take some time to surface. They can take take 12 to 36 hours to appear. These symptoms can be relieved by making sure that you take care of your hands, as well as wearing non-latex hypo allergenic gloves. Please keep in mind that latex allergies can cause serious life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis with no previous warning or symptoms.

Who is at Risk for a Latex Allergy ?

Naturally those that are exposed to latex the most are the ones at highest risk. These would include healthcare workers, daycare workers, food preparers, janitorial workers and rubber industry workers. Latex gloves are the most prevalent exposure. Some suggest that those with hay fever have a greater chance of developing latex allergy. People who had several operations in childhood are also more likely to have this allergy. Though as can be seen by the prevalence of latex in so many products, anyone can develop a latex allergy.

The reaction to the latex is to the protein in the rubber. Connections have been found to certain foods and latex allergy. Some of these foods are bananas, avocados, kiwi fruit and tomatoes. They contain a similar protein as latex and can therefore cause a cross-reaction.

If you suspect that you have this allergy it is of course advisable to contact your doctor. They will probably direct you to an allergist to confirm your allergy. Typically testing for a latex allergy is done via blood tests since a skin test could prove rather dangerous. We all tend to walk around oblivious to some of the dangers that surround us. Being aware of possible allergies including a latex allergy can possibly make a life or death difference.

You May Be Asking: What Is Insomnia?

You may be wondering what is insomnia? Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a person has a problem falling asleep or staying asleep. Often times, one may wake up many times during the night, and when you do wake up in the morning you do not feel rested and refreshed.

Poor sleep can lead to a number of other problems especially if over a prolonged period of time. One can experience mood disorders, lack of focus and concentration, low levels of energy and general fatigue.

There are 3 types of insomnia:

• Transient or mild insomnia generally results from the inability to sleep over a short period of time such as a few days.

• Moderate insomnia occurs generally for less than a month and can result in poor functioning during the day and irritability.

• Chronic insomnia lasts for longer than a month and impairs one’s functioning in a substantial way. Feelings of restlessness and irritability occur frequently, and the ability to concentrate and focus are compromised.

Left unchecked, insomnia can lead to numerous other problems:

• Mental function: When you don’t get adequate sleep, your concentration and memory faculties can be impaired. Further, your quality of life and relationships can suffer due to irritability and moodiness.

• Increased risk of accidents: Insomnia increases the risk of accidents, and drowsy driving can be as risky and, possibly fatal, as drunk driving.

• Mood disorders: Stress and anxiety can cause insomnia. However, insomnia also increases the activity of hormones and pathways in the brain, and adverse changes in sleeping patterns can have substantial negative effects on mood.

• Other complications: Chronic insomnia can also lead to obesity, poor immune function and increased risk of long term diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

There are a number of other sleep disorders that also cause substantial sleep problems. These include:

• Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing during sleep. Each pause in breathing can last from a few seconds to minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram, or “sleep study”. Sleep apnea is often only recognized by others who observe the symptoms or by the fatigue one feels during the day due to poor sleep.

• Narcolepsy causes excessive sleepiness and daytime attacks. The most common symptoms of narcolepsy are periods of extreme drowsiness every 3 to 4 hours during the day. Additionally, other major symptoms can include cataplexy, or the sudden loss of voluntary muscle tone; hallucinations during sleep onset or upon awakening; and brief episodes of paralysis at the beginning or end of sleep.

• Restless leg syndrome is characterized by sensations in the lower legs that make you uncomfortable unless you move your legs. These sensations usually occur at night when you lie down or during the day when you sit for long periods of time. These sensations have been described as tingling, crawling, searing or pulling. All of these symptoms can make it difficult to sleep or sit for extended periods of time.

As you can see there are a number of sleep disorders that can cause major problems. If you suffer from sleep problems for over a week you really should see your doctor to determine what’s going on and how you can address your issues.

Health – Depression & Broken Heart

You do not have to suffer in silence. In most cases of panic attack, it usually starts with depression. A female reporter in Hong Kong who successfully juggled the demands of writing for publications around the world suddenly suffered panic attack. She often had panic attacks as she was overwhelmed by feelings of isolation, hopelessness, inadequacy and failure. She would always excuse herself and pretended to have urgent private calls to make so that she could get out and calm down.

A cartoonist for a famous Japanese magazines; suddenly hit a dry spell in 1986 and she was afraid to get out of bed in the morning. She stopped eating and lost seven kilos within a few days. She was left without getting any assignments for a month and spent her time lying in bed, smoking and drinking and was overwhelmed with thoughts of dying. Both the female reporter and cartoonist were suffering from clinical depression.

There are millions of people like them and they kept the illness to themselves. In Japan alone there are more than six millions people suffering from depression according to Dr Takahashi Toru of the Toru Clinic in Tokyo. It is estimated that one in 13 people aged 24 to 64 suffered from depression according to a study done by Singapore National Mental Health survey.

We seldom hear about depression just thirty years ago but the world is different now. People were different then, but presently many human beings have lost their value of life. Many have lost their conscience and killing is everywhere. People live in fear from many kinds of threats and even in the comfort of their homes, danger is there. There is no peace even to just go marketing for fresh vegetables. A bomb may explode anytime, anyplace.

Financial security is one of the main causes for depression. Jobless people or those hardly can make end meet, are usually victims of depression which can after some time of suffering start to have panic attacks. Depressive disorders range from dysthymia – low grade, chronic depression – to bipolar disorder, or manic depression, which causes extreme swings between depressive lows and manic high. Depression remains widely misunderstood and sufferers lead a double life. One minute full of confidence and another minute worse than a little mouse when panic attack. Depression is a taboo among Chinese and if people know that you are depressed, they will avoid you.

I should say broken heart is the worst mental blues and almost everyone gets the blues once in a lifetime. Those who have not experience it are lucky or maybe they have never fallen in love before. They will not be able to grasp the anguish depression brings. It's so emotionally intense that it paralyses you and says one sufferer, "You never know when it will end, the pain is so overwhelming that you want to end it all."

People will sometimes give advice with the best intentions for broken heart but says Siti Mohammad, a young female accountant who has lived with depression for much of her life: "Sometimes my relatives will tell me to look at the positive side of things. They say , 'You have to be strong and believe in God.' They make it sound as if I could just snap out of it. If it was that simple, I would not be like this. "

Depression is often inadequately treated or not treated at all because the truth of broken heart may not be admitted by the sufferers. For instance, many Malays believe the emotions lie in the liver and will complain about stomach soreness rather than admit to depression. Among the Chinese, the heart is often seen as the source of emotions, so they complain about chest discomfort. Singapore National University's Kua says these cultural factors lead to misdiagnosis or no diagnosis at all in as many as one-third of cases.

For the elderly, physical ailments can mask symptoms of depression (it is often confused with Alzheimer's disease), and there is a belief, even in the medical community, that depression is simply a fact of an older person's life. According to a study conducted in the 1980s by Dr Lee Aik Hoe, president of the Malaysian Mental Health Association, showed that three-quarters of people who had attempted suicide also suffered from depression.

Rose Lee's depression nearly killed her. As a teenager, she tumbled into a black pit and said, "I was severely depressed – the pain was terrible. It seemed logical to kill myself." Richard Ng of Kuala Lumpur said he lost his father to suicide. "He displayed signs of depression – being withdrawn and losing his appetite – signs that I recognized but did nothing about, but when he committed suicide, I was shattered."

The road to recovery is a tough one but it can be treated. If it is not because of broken heart, then the chances of recovery is good with medication. If it is because of broken heart, then there is no medicine that can cure a broken heart. There are many drugs that physicians can prescribe and certain antidepressants really work effectively so as to allow the sufferers to get on with life. But drug may have side effects like insomnia and sexual dysfunction, professional help is advised in such a case to take the right type and also avoid the risk of taking an overdose.

One of the best rescues is interpersonal and cognitive counselling. Therapy can help to change a patient's thinking and reappraise their external circumstances. Interpersonal therapy focuses on specific-related problems, while cognitive therapy tries to counter the feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness that plague those who are depressed. In Malaysia the "Befrienders" is doing an excellent voluntarily job to make life worth living. The 24-hour helpline, modelled on the Samaritans in the United Kingdom, is one of the oldest services in Asia. It has more than 200 volunteers and fielded 24,000 calls a year.

Suicide is a grave sin according to spiritual teachings in almost every religion. Certain religion says that if a person commits suicide, he will also commit suicide for his next seven future lives. I had a relative who committed suicide many years ago. She was one of the most beautiful women in my hometown and married to one of the richest men there. Very fortunate during her younger days because of her beauty, but when her husband passed away early in life, she was cheated of everything she possessed by a conman who only wanted her properties. Unable to take the pain of her broken heart and loss of all her possessions, she took her life.

Conquering Commitment Phobia

The process of creating a life partner relationship typically progresses through various stages. At one important point, a couple will decide to become "exclusive," agreeing not to date anyone else. While being exclusive has its benefits, it is really only one stop on the road to a life partnership. That's because creating a life partner relationship requires taking the ultimate step of making a commitment.

This is the point in relationships when I frequently hear a lot of complaints, such as "She's worried about being only with me," or "He's got 'commitment phobia'." The term "commitment phobia" is a rather new addition to the English language. The original use of the term "phobia" comes from classical psychoanalysis, and is defined as "an obsessive, persistent, unrealistic intense fear of an object or situation." Common phobias are acrophobia, the fear of heights; claustrophobia, the fear of closed spaces; and agoraphobia, fear of open spaces. These unrealistic fears are thought to stem from "the displacement of an internal (unconscious) conflict to an external object symbolically related to the conflict." (A Psychiatric Glossary, Fourth Revised Edition, American Psychiatric Association.)

However, modern behavioral psychologists say phobias result from painful and / or traumatic events. For example, being stuck in a crowded elevator or subway train for a long period of time can cause phobic (fearful) reactions to, and avoidance of, elevators and subways, ie, claustrophobia, in the future.

Defining the term "commitment" is a bit easier. It is a promise, a pledge or a vow. Making a commitment or a promise is essential when pursuing a goal. For example, an athlete wanting to win a gold medal in the Olympics must make a commitment to do everything it takes to win. As it pertains to the goal of creating a life partner relationship however, the commitment requires being loyal, trustworthy and faithful to another person.

Putting the two words together, the term "commitment phobia" becomes "an unrealistic fear of making a promise, a pledge or a vow to be a faithful and loyal partner to another person."

It would be understandable if a person has relationship fears because of some direct, painful experiences. A common precipitator is the experience of relationship failure, either that of one's own or of a close loved one. Here's an example –

Janet's parents divorced when she was 8 years old. While she lived with her mother and older sister, Jan had regular visits with her father in his new home. Her mother remarried a man whom Jan felt was vulgar and rude, and her father remarried a woman who Jan felt took advantage of her father's good nature. As a teenager and adult, Jan had relationship failures of her own, and eventually realized that she had no role-models for a healthy, working marriage. She entered psychotherapy and worked on clarifying what she wanted and needed in a relationship. She hung out with couples she respected, and got closer to attaining the kind of relationship she wanted by the time she met Mark on an online dating website.

Jan and Mark hit it off quite well, sharing many interests and life goals. They agreed to become exclusive after a couple of months, and within 7 months they were talking about marriage. This was when Jan found herself obsessing and worrying about her future, crying, losing sleep and sweating nervously whenever the topic of marriage came up. She knew she loved Mark and wanted to marry him, but her fears were so strong that she refused to discuss it with him anymore.

Psychotherapy helped Jan to see that she was not her mother or her father, that she had the skills and abilities to be in a loyal partnership, and that Mark was nothing like her father (a pushover) or her stepfather (crude and overbearing). Once Jan got a handle on the realities, she was able to move forward with wedding plans and married Mark one year to the date they met.

Janet's experience of her parent's divorce, coupled with her own relationship failures, set the stage for her fearful reactions to committing to Mark. With US divorce rates hovering around 50%, witnessing dysfunctional relationships is quite commonplace, so it's not difficult to understand why many singles might experience commitment phobia.

Unfortunately, I see another manifestation of commitment phobia today with singles who suffer from perfectionism. They fear having to compromise their vision of an ideal mate, and believing that there will always be someone better around the corner, they reject date after date after date. Rejecting suitable partners then becomes a habit they become experts at, and their "pickiness" masks their true "commitment phobia."

Sam is a successful stock broker in his early forties. He says he has been dating for the purpose of marriage since his mid-twenties, and has dated almost 200 women. He says that he is capable of commitment, pointing to the exclusive relationships he has had, some of them lasting for over a year. Sam almost got engaged twice, but the first woman was not as educated as he, and the second woman's mother was overweight. He claims that the reason he's not married is because he "has not found the right woman yet."

Expecting perfection is an unrealistic and unattainable goal, yet fears of making a mistake can be paralyzing. Sam needs to learn how to focus more on the quality of the connections he's making with his dates, rather than continue to judge them based on the specifics. If he's unable to change his approach, then his inability to make a commitment is beyond coaching, and would require the deeper introspection that psychotherapy offers.

For most singles, however, conquering the fear of commitment, or "commitment phobia," involves managing the risks inherent in attempting any new endeavor. For many, this "risk-management" can be accomplished by making sure that you are truly ready, willing and able to be in an exclusive, committed relationship.

But for the true "commitment phobes," more help might be needed to overcome the paralyzing fears preventing them from attaining their ultimate goal of a loving and committed life partner relationship. But it can be worth it.
