Fruits For Diabetes Is a Good Concept – Know The Best Fruits

What fruits can diabetics eat? This is indeed an anxious question put by anyone prone to diabetes or pre-diabetes. But when you are suffering from diabetes, you may raise a reasonable doubt about the consumption of fruits for diabetes and the risk in it. It’s partly a genuine attitude to know the influencing factor in fruits helping to keep normal blood sugar levels. The American Diabetes Association emphasises that eating fruits loaded with vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber is good to keep off diabetes for healthy living. The prime key is to pay concern for portion sizes of what you consume to add energy to your body.

In this juncture, it is warned that fruits canned in syrups should not be considered to replace whole fruits. When you have concern for glycemic index (GI) for managing diabetes with ease, you should have the right choice of fruits with low glycemic index. You can just check your blood sugar by eating fresh or frozen low carb fruits. Hereunder you have the alphabetical A,B,C,D fruits described in order.

Apricots

Sweet but low carb apricots are indeed wonderful summer fruits that can be listed as the best fruits for diabetics. Adding apricots in diabetes meal plan is nice for the good reason that one apricot weighing 15 grams contains just 18 calories to revitalize body energy. Including four apricots can ensure one serving to provide you 70 percent of the vitamin needs for your body. Apricots are high in fiber source. You can relish a delicious salad by adding some cut pieces of apricots and cereal to hot or cold milk.

Berries

You have blueberries, strawberries, and other varieties in berries family. Irrespective of your taste, choosing berries to consume is good for the simple reason that they contain benefitting antioxidants helping the diabetics. The vitamins and fiber contents are of low carb nature. Regarding the calories, a small cup of blueberries can give 60 calories and 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Cherries

Cherries are friendly diabetic diet fruits a diabetic can eat without hesitation because they comprise low-carb components and have low glycemic index. They are sweet but just evolve 60 calories with 15 grams of carbohydrates. You have also bitter tasting cherries loaded with antioxidants helping to fight not only type 2 diabetes but also cancer and a few other diseases. Cherries are available in fresh pack canned, frozen, or even dried form. But it is better to avoid canned and dried form as they are packed with added sugar detrimental to diabetes. However, by checking the label about the amount of added sugar content you can have a nice purchase.

Durian

Durian is identified as the king of fruits. When it comes to diabetes, the choosing fruits low in glycemic index is the best. In this list, Durian is a better choice among fruits good for diabetics as the GI is 49 +/-5 whereas it is 55 +/-3 for watermelon. Sulphur helps to keep balanced blood sugar in the blood cells and nullify hypoglycemic effects. As such, the organosulphur components contained in Durian fruit stimulate antioxidant activities to maintain normal sugar levels in the blood cells. Also, sulphur ingredient reacts with thiamine and biotin to promote normal metabolism. In spite of all these, it will be safe a diabetic consumes durian in any form in moderation because of high nutritious values comprised in durian fruit.

A final say: Though ‘fruits for diabetes’ is a good concept helping to maintain normal sugar levels, fruits low in sugar is best suggested. If at all you have cravings for consuming sweet fruits, no harm, you are safe if you are consuming one or two slices.

Can Obesity Lead to an Early Death

There are so many unhealthy habits that we can, unfortunately, pick-up all too easily. Drinking, smoking, and overeating can all be extremely dangerous to your health. What's really more unhealthy, lighting up a pack of cigarettes per day or packing on a few extra pounds? New research conducted by the National Cancer Institute in Maryland indicates that both may be equally as hazardous for your health. Just as cigarettes can shave years off of your life, obesity can do the same.

For a long time, being overweight was considered to be more of a cosmetic or vanity issue opposed to an actual health concern. This was until researchers started discovering that fat cells were not cells that did absolutely nothing. Instead, these fat cells were performing actual functions throughout the body. More specifically, fat cells were releasing hormones that were interfering with the body's immune system. These hormones were harming the body's ability to fight off foreign invaders – including cancer cells.

The negatives of packing on extra pounds do not stop at the body's immune system. Obesity is also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, reproductive problems, gallstone and more.

Scientists calculated the number of years lost from a person's life from morbid obesity. This was calculated based on BMI or basal metabolic index. For instance, an individual with a BMI between 40 and 44.9 has the potential to lose 6.5 years from their life. A BMI of 45 to 49.9 has the potential to lose 8.9 years from their life. Individuals with a BMI of 50 to 54.9 could potentially lose 9.8 years of life. For those with a BMI of 55 to 55.9, the potential loss of years can range from 10 to 13.7 years.

Researchers also uncovered that men who were extremely obese had a higher death rate than women who were extremely obese. (856 deaths compared to 663 in deaths per 100,000 per year). Comparing this to those with a normal BMI, there were only 347 deaths in men and 281 deaths in women. Researchers have found these findings to be quite significant when it comes to obesity and loss of life.

What's the Solution to Our Obesity Problem?

It is important to remember that this is not the only study that demonstrates a correlation between certain unhealthy habits and early death rates. It seems people are ignoring the dangers of obesity. The one thing that this study did not consider is that other causes of disease and death that traditional medicine is not taking into consideration.

Some believe that one of the reasons for such prevalence when it comes to obesity is major changes to our food supply. Medical doctor William Davis, who is a cardiologist and author of the bestseller, Wheat Belly, indicates that genetically modified wheat ends up causing an addiction-like substances that are active in the brain. This is related to the desire to continuously eat more and more wheat. This does have the potential to contribute to morbid obesity; especially since the glycemic index of wheat is high and the food contributes to higher than usual release of insulin each time wheat is consumed. This release of excess insulin has the potential to cause diabetes.

What Can You Do to Help Keep Obesity Away?
The answer may just be as simple as take care of yourself. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help to keep you at a healthy weight. Receiving routine medical care can also help to prevent and detect disease.

To stay on top of the latest changes occurring in society, consult your chiropractor. Your chiropractor has an extensive background in a wide-variety of health-related concerns. Vaginal Rash & Genital Warts Differences – Does Your Red, Itchy Sore Vagina Cause You Pain Also?

Is having a red rash in the vicinity of the genitals, or particularly the vagina a serious issue? In a manner of speaking, no, a vaginal rash is no different than having a rash on your face or on other body parts. Nevertheless depending on the cause of why the rash has developed could then determine seriousness. In saying this still not a time to worry till you have had your vaginal rash checked out by your doctor.

What is the difference between a vaginal rash or face rash? Simply answered, we find more women will go and seek medical advice for a facial rash before that of seeking treatment for a rash round their vagina. The primary reason why this is – is because they are embarrassed. Listen ladies the vagina is just another part of the body that a doctor will treat in great numbers on a daily basis. Your vagina is no different to any other woman`s that your GP will see. You will be doing yourself a favor to stop blushing and have yourself checked over.

A vaginal rash can affect both women and men, not vaginal for the male, but genital. We are dealing with tender and delicate skin with this issue, so it is best to treat your rash in the way you would that of facial skin (tenderly) unless suggested otherwise by your GP. A vaginal rash that has developed is not usually diagnosed as a serious issue and is more times easily and quickly rid after using appropriate treatments.

If the rash has occurred through infection then this is different matter altogether, as it will need medical attention. Infections left untreated can turn nasty, and should it be a venereal disease, even nastier. Particular VDs can cause serious health complications, even death. If you’re 100% sure that your vaginal rash has not erupted from allergic reaction or from profuse sweating, or genital skin rubbing caused by tight garments, then more the reason to talk to your GP. Vaginal infections come varied but the more types known to cause a vaginal rash are:

Yeast infections

Herpes

Genital warts

Trichomoniasis

We connect a vaginal rash more towards a yeast infection which comes about if fungus Candida is permitted to reproduce around the vagina.

Unfortunately the importance of wearing loose clothing round the genitals although pointed out on high scale as to be a major cause of vaginal rash is oft times ignored; women tend to still tighten their knickers round their crotch. Tight clothes smother the vagina, yes smother, the vagina and surrounding areas need space to breathe. When you sweat, tight cloth restricts it being absorbed to leave the genitals cool and dry, resulting in it doing the complete opposite and creates a warm moist site for yeast fungi to grow.

A regular time we see the vaginal rash happen is round the time of your periods. If you use tampons or sanitary towels and they are not removed or changed regular then a vaginal rash can occur. Your toilet habits may need changing too. Old habits die hard but where your health is concerned they need to be deadened pronto and new habits practiced. When you use the loo for bowel movement you need to clean from the vagina towards the anus. Clean thoroughly after weeing, not only because stale pee can be smelly but because the acidic effect in urine can cause irritation and skin rawness. This makes sense as you only have to think babies and nappy rash. Drying the genital area after washing is vitally important to prevent vaginal rash.

Rashes are common symptoms related to STDs (genital warts or herpes.) If you already have a rash round the vagina, try adding salt and vinegar to bath water. If you shower then do this using a basin and apply the solution by hand. Yeast infection is widely found in the armpits and between the toes as well as other body parts. Yeast fungus namely Candida can also infect the mouth, fingers, skin and throat. Candida albicans has been determined for the cause of vaginitis in some cases.

Symptoms of a yeast infection may include

burning

Stinging when weeing

sexual intercourse discomfort

vaginal odor (not unpleasant)

irritation

Vulva/vagina itchiness

Pain urinating

Redness and swelling

Home treatments for particular vaginal infections may include nonprescription vaginal creams or suppositories. Fluconazole (Diflucan) tablets are effective for vaginal yeast infections, however can only be got via prescription.

Genital herpes cannot be ruled out if you have vaginal rash. It is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It is sexually transmitted and is recognized through blisters and sores. HSV even though treated stays dormant in the body for life. Genital herpes cannot be rid completely.

Genital warts another condition affecting both men and women. They are caused by various types of human papillomavirus. HPV commonly affects the cervix, vagina, vulva, and anus. In men the penis is affected, the scrotum and anus. Main symptoms of genital warts are lumps which appear pinkish/white in color, or they can be larger and shaped like a cauliflower. To help keep vaginal infections away there are many things you can do and one of those is to turn to yogurt, yes you heard right, yogurt.

1 Replace sugar with yogurt. Yogurt contains good bacteria called acidophilus. Sugar promotes the type of bacteria that the yogurt bacteria attempt to destroy.

2 Infections can come about from sweat and oil build up, and by just merely bathing regular and keeping vaginal hygiene at its best can prevent sweat and body oils causing you problems. Do not douche as it is too harsh of a cleansing process, Douching may well remove bad bacteria, but at the same time takes good bacteria too. Inflammation is drawn to douching (vaginitis). Use a clean cloth and unscented soap to wash the inside of your vagina.

3 Using condoms helps keep the vagina clean and also protects against unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

4 Wear cotton garments around the genitals.

5 Remove tampons at the time of menstruation regular. Aside from smell leaving tampons or forgetting about them can cause toxic shock syndrome. Toxic shock syndrome symptoms include rapid high fever, faintness, and loose diarrhea, headache, and muscle pain, however not a common condition, but one that has to be taken very seriously if it were to occur.

6 Soap can cause vaginal dryness. Warm water is enough to stay clean and fresh.

Personal hygiene is a beneficial feature that the body needs to stay in a healthy condition. A vaginal rash can cause discomfort if clothing comes in close contact with the infected area because the skin is sore and tender, and in some cases of severe vaginal rash it can appear red and angry looking.

If you don’t get your vaginal rash examined by a doctor, and make the decision to treat the problem yourself with over-the-counter medications or natural remedies, you should be aware that potential problems can happen from this. You need certainty of your health issue because while you may treating a yeast infection, in reality your vaginal rash may be as a result of something else, so therefore a correct diagnosis will keep you safe.

Using Nutrition To Treat 5 Common Skin Problems

Acne: You should avoid well-recognized dietary "triggers" such as grains, corn, peanuts, eggs, soy and dairy. Even if you do not have a diagnosed gluten intolerance problem, a relative gluten intolerance may also be at work because glutens seem to have an almost allergic-type role in stimulating acne. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye – these are the grains that must be avoided. Oats are probably not an actual gluten but because of cross contamination at processing sites, oats effectively may have the same impact and therefore should also be avoided. Be aware that glutens are also commonly used as a food stabilizer / thickening additive (eg ice cream and ketchup). Gluten free grains / starches include potatoes and rice. Food containing iodides (salts), acidic foods (eg tomatoes) and citrus fruits (eg oranges or grapefruit) can also aggravate acne and stimulate sebaceous gland activity. On the other hand, foods rich in Vitamin A (eg carrots or sweet potatoes) and zinc (eg shellfish, clams, or chickpeas) can help reduce acne lesions.

Sunburn: The antioxidants in dark chocolate protect against sun damage – perhaps a cup of cocoa instead of that morning boardwalk cup of coffee? Green teas or black teas also have skin protecting antioxidants, too. Green leafy vegetables are well-known for their great anti-sun damage antioxidants and broccoli may be the best among them. Broccoli contains sulforaphane, a unique antioxidant that seems to have a variety of anti-cancer effects as well. Salmon or other sources of fish oil will decrease the inflammation of sunburn via their omega-3's. Colorful fruits and vegetables high in carotenoids and lycopene (eg watermelon or tomatoes) will serve to lessen any sun damage. Keep in mind the double punch here – these nutritional weapons against sun damage also serve to lessen the risk of skin cancer!

Cold Sores: Caused by the Herpes Virus (HSV-1) which needs lots of the amino acid arginine to be activated and go into replication. This then results in painful, ulcerating blisters on the lips. The amino acid lysine tends to block the virus from being able to use arginine. Getting food substances in your system that are high in lysine and simultaneously low in arginine (ie a high lysine to arginine ratio) is a great nutritional strategy for stopping an outbreak when you feel one might be coming on. It is also a good means for prevention under circumstances which are often likely to cause an outbreak such as recent sunburn, fever / cold, or menstrual cycle. High lysine to arginine ratio foods can also limit the duration and severity of an outbreak once it occurs. High lysine / arginine ratio foods: milk, eggs, cheese, avocado, red meat, wheat germ, brewer's yeast, fish, beets. Foods to avoid because they have proportionately more arginine than lysine (ie a low lysine / arginine ratio): chocolate, nuts, seeds, peanut butter and bananas.

Rosacea: Unfortunately, there is a very long list of well-known dietary "triggers" that you should try to avoid. Spicy foods, coffee, alcohol, lemons, avocados, bananas, figs, raisins, eggplant, mushrooms, lima or navy beans, sodium nitrites (eg cured meats like hot dogs or bacon), chocolate, parmesan or blue cheeses, Chianti or burgundy wines , salami, spinach, and chicken liver. Good intake of probiotics (eg yogurt) and essential fatty acids (the omega's: 3, 6, and 9) such as are found in foods like salmon and walnuts, are often helpful in minimizing Rosacea symptoms.

Eczema: A diet lacking in essential fatty acids (eg walnuts, almonds, and flax seed) will perpetuate eczema. Keeping the skin well hydrated is also quite important in minimizing flare-ups. This means drinking plenty of liquids, but keep in mind that alcohol and teas actually have an overall dehydrating effect which could result in aggravating any eczema symptoms.

Psoriasis Treatment – May Hot Peppers Help?

Hot peppers (Chili peppers) include a special ingredient called Capsaicin in their composition. Capsaicin is the particular ingredient which makes Chili peppers taste hot. Pure Capsaicin is a colorless and odorless crystalline compound.

Some plants naturally have Capsaicin in them for the protection of their leaf from animals eating them, and possibly also for the protection from certain fungi. The highest concentrations of Capsaicin are usually found in the fleshy parts of the seeds and the fruits of the genus Capsicum plants (ie chili peppers, red or green peppers).

Capsaicin causes a sensation of heat anywhere it comes in the contact with the skin (especially in the sensitive skin areas) or the mucous membranes of a human or an animal.

Capsaicin is used in the sprays for the riot control, as it will cause a severe burning if it gets onto the face or into the eyes of a human.

In medicine Capsaicin is most commonly used as a component of the Over the Counter (OTC) pain relievers for arthritis, and sometimes also as a circulatory stimulant. Over the Counter pain relieving creams usually contain Capsaicin in concentrations between 0.025% and 0.075%. Some studies show that Capsaicin can also help to reduce the pains, associated with Psoriatic Arthritis.

Topical creams with Capsaicin help to relieve the pain in the nerve endings near the skin surface. Capsaicin interrupts the action of molecules at the nerve endings, which affect how the brain recognizes pain, itch, and heat. When Capsaicin is removed, the nerve endings recover back to their normal state.

May Capsaicin also help in psoriasis treatment? And if yes, then how will it – topically or internally?

Several double-blind placebo controlled studies have shown that a topical application of a 0.025% cream with Capsaicin has helped to sufficiently relieve the skin symptoms in the people with psoriasis when compared to the placebo controlled group of people with psoriasis.

Due to the burning sensation caused by Capsaicin when it comes in contact with mucous membranes (mucous membranes include mouth, gums, stomach, intestines, nose, bronchial tubes, and urinary tract), it is often used in food products to make them taste spicy or "hot".

According to some studies, Capsaicin may also cause the release of endorphins in the body – the compounds produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus during exercise, a sexual intercourse, an excitement etc. Endorphins cause a feeling of pleasure when released into the human body.

Some people with psoriasis say that they also benefit from the dietary intake of foods containing Capsaicin. Other people can not use Capsaicin as an internal psoriasis treatment, due to that, hot peppers (Chili peppers or Cayenne peppers) and other products with Capsaicin cause heartburn in them.

I suspect that Capsaicin may work in psoriasis treatment due to acting as an irritant for the psoriatic plaques. Just as with Cryotherapy (treatment with the use of ultra low temperatures), Capsaicin may irritate the skin due to causing the sensation of a strong heat on the skin, and thus to cause the skin to "pay attention" to what is going on with the site and to adjust accordingly.

Capsaicin may also serve a natural anti-inflammatory agent for the psoriatic plaques.

Enter the Fungus Den – Step Three on Home Treatment For Toenail Fungus

So you’ve reached part three of the Home Treatment for Toenail Fungus articles. You’ve gone far indeed. But now brace yourselves. We are going to enter… The fungus den! Creepy isn’t it? Okay. Enough with the theatrics. Let’s see what places that they like to hang out in.

Okay, in the last article, we discussed the two families, the Dermatophytes and the Candida gang. Dermatophytes like to hang out with animals. You can say that’s their main base. Candida gang, on the other hand prefer to stay grounded, which means, they love living in the soil. This poses a number of problems. First of all, you can get nail fungus by not wearing proper footwear in places intended for public use. Public bathrooms are the most common place to get them. It’s moist enough for them to grow.

Other things that you should watch out for is the length of your nails. Yes, you heard me. The space between your nail plate and your toe, for instance, could be humid enough if not dried properly. Hence, the gang would love to move there. Proper thing to do is to keep your feet and hands clean with soap and water. One other thing, the most important part. DRY them properly. They really love humid places rich with moistures.

Other places they like to hang out in is your socks. This is especially true if the socks do not absorb water. The water is trapped, hard to dry and causes the place to be a perfect hang out place for the guys. Research says that the best material for socks that you can wear if you have onychomycosis is cotton and wool socks. They absorb water.

Shoes is also one of their dwellings. Shoes that does not ‘breathe’ (meaning they have pores for air circulation) are places that have high possibility for them to grow and expand. That is why, one of the first step of treating onychomycosis is to inspect your shoes and socks, hence eliminating the chance of a relapse in the future.

Manicure and pedicure tools are also things to watch out for. They should be disinfected after use. This prevents the guys to get a chance to grow there. Do not apply nail polish to nails that are infected. Yeah, I know, it’s unsightly and some nail polish could help mask them. But seriously, don’t. This causes the water that gathers under the the nail to be trapped, they can’t be evaporated. As you remember, moisture equals fungus den, so you have to take notice.

That’s about it. The key is moisture, if you remember it, you should be fine.

Living With a Latex Allergy

The interesting thing about latex is that it is a huge part of our society, often without being noticed. For example, carpet backing, pencil erasers, baby pacifiers, wheelchair tires, toys, balloons, and even elastic in clothing is latex. However, most people relate latex to adhesive tape used in hospitals, which is yet another example. Because so many people have latex allergy and the number of things made from latex is growing, symptoms are on the rise.

Take the healthcare industry for example – this particular area is surrounded by latex in the form of tape, surgical gloves, disposable syringes, and blood pressure cuffs. Because doctor's offices, clinics, and hospitals use so much latex, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have released results of a study that show a minimum of 12% of all healthcare workers eventually deal with some level of latex allergy. Even so, the biggest concern regarding latex allergy relates to children with disability since their small, sick bodies are highly sensitive and susceptible, putting them at greater risk.

Keep in mind that when it comes to latex allergy, there are many different forms of reaction, some minor and some major. For instance, a Type 1 latex allergy is considered as hypersensitive, which produces symptoms ranging from minor such as watery eyes and a runny nose to more severe problems that would include nausea and vomiting, hives, and shortness of breath. With Type 1, the problem is that latex particles become airborne and then inhaled.

For Type 4 latex allergy, the reaction is limited to any exposed area. This would include someone having surgery and the bandages being held on by latex tape. The result is a skin rash and irritation, swelling, and redness that typically lasts anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. Obviously, this type of latex allergy is not nearly as serious although it is quite frustrating.

Keep in mind that latex is actually a natural product that comes from a rubber tree's sap. Because it is so flexible, strong, and costs very little to manufacture, it takes first place over many similar manmade products. If you suspect that you have a latex allergy, you can see your doctor for a thorough examination and blood work. This test involves looking at a certain antibody called IgE immunoassays, which is performed through skin testing.

This particular test is currently being approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and while it is highly accurate for proving latex allergy, it is not designed to determine the severity of the allergy. Therefore, in addition to the testing, if you have reaction to latex, you should avoid using it, turning instead to vinyl or plastic.

Hot Flashes Help Through Diet and Herbs

Hot flashes help is available without hormones or drugs. Hot flashes and sweats are one of the earliest, most bothersome and common complaint of menopause. Hot flashes and sweats affect 80% of Western women as they transition beyond their childbearing years. But not all women in the world experience hot flashes and sweats the way women in Western cultures do. For instance Japanese women are reported to experience far fewer hot flashes. Only 10 to 15 percent of Japanese women are reported to experience hot flashes, night sweats and other symptoms of menopause such as mood swings, dry skin, vaginal dryness, irritability, depression, anxiety, fatigue, sexual problems and urinary tract problems. Japanese women also suffer far less breast cancer than their Western counterparts. A bulletin of the American Cancer Society, Cancer Facts and Figures states that women in the US are 4.5 X more likely to die of breast cancer than Japanese.

Why do Western women suffer while Japanese women do not? Much of the difference between Japanese women and their Western counterparts with regard to menopausal complaints, including hot flashes and sweats, is attributed to our different diets. The Japanese consume lots of soy in the form of tofu, fermented soy products and soy milk. Soy contains phytoestrogens, or plant derived hormones that have an estrogenic effect in the human body. This effect is mild compared to the human estrogens (estrone, estradiol and estriol), but can be significant and therapeutic. Consumption of foods containing phytoestrogens replaces the estrogens lost with decreased secretion of estrogens from the ovaries during perimenopause and menopause. The net effect is an easier transition through menopause with fewer and less severe symptoms of menopause-just as Japanese women experience.

Eat key foods that contain phytoestrogens. Soy beans and flax seed are two foods that contain phytoestrogens that are particularly helpful with regard to the symptoms of menopause. A study published in the British Journal of Medicine in 1990 documents the benefits of soy and flaxseed. Women suffering the typical symptoms of perimenopause and menopause (average age 59) added soy (6 tablespoons of soy flour) or flaxseed (2 tablespoons) each day. A major complaint of perimenopause and menopause is vaginal dryness. This occurs when decreased estrogen levels result in lessened secretion of vaginal mucus. As a measure of the benefit of the soy and/or flaxseed, each woman’s vaginal mucous secretion was evaluated before and six weeks of the changed diet. In just six weeks the women experienced renewed lubrication of the vaginal tissues, to their premenopausal status. A study in Maturitas: Journal of Climacteric and Postmenopause reported a 40% decrease in hot flashes, sweats, palpitations, headaches, depression, fatigue, irritability and nervousness, sleep disturbances, depression, and loss of sexual desire with soy. The diets of 58 women were supplemented with 6 tablespoons of soy flour per day. Improvement was experienced in six weeks. Phytoestrogens are found naturally in many of the foods that we eat. Soy and flaxseed are two foods with higher concentrations and high quality phytoestrogens. Other common foods that contain phytoestrogens are apples, carrots, oats, plums, olives, potatoes, tea, coffee, and sunflower seeds.

Herbal remedies for hot flashes. Plant herbs also contain phytoestrogens that are shown to help relieve menopausal complaints such as hot flashes and sweats. While many of these herbs have been in use for some time, documentation of their benefits is not well established. Herbs like dong quai (Angelica sinensis), chasteberry (Vitex Agnus-castus) have been shown to relieve menopausal complaints up to 45%. Black cohosh is another herb that has commonly been used for menopausal complaints. It is available in a product called Remifemin. Clinical studies of the benefits of black cohosh for menopausal symptoms yield varied results. Some studies document definite improvements, others seem not to. In a recent study researchers postulated that the mechanism of black cohosh’s benefits for menopausal complaints is through its influence of opiate receptors in the brain. Clinical studies document the benefits of Siberian rhubarb root extract (ERr 731) for relief of menopausal complaints. One herb that is not well known in the United States, but which has been in use in Germany for hot flashes and sweats since 1993, is Siberian rhubarb root extract. Known as ERr 731 to researchers, it has been shown to reduce hot flashes and sweats by 72% in just 12 weeks.

Finding Depression Cures That Work

Everyone feels blue from time to time, but when those sometimes blues turn into everyday down-in-the-dumps, you should begin to seek out depression cures that work. Depression is a true mental condition that is marked by changes in sleeping and eating patterns, feelings of helplessness and guilt, increased anxiety and anger, and more. Suicide attempts are also far more common for those with this condition than others. When you are facing this issue yourself, you know that you are pulling away from others and losing interest in life, and that in itself can feel scary. You may find that you feel like you are in a hole and simply cannot pull yourself up. There are, however, some depression cures that can set you on the right path.

Medical Attention. First, it is absolutely imperative that you pick up the phone today and make an appointment to talk to your doctor about your condition. The fact is that hundreds of millions of people around the globe suffer from this condition, and your doctor will not think anything less of you for seeking out the help you need. Your doctor can help you get on the right medication that will have you feeling far better in no time at all. In fact, many who first get on antidepressants notice that they feel worlds better in just days.

Natural Solutions. While you absolutely do not want to cut corners and want to make the most of your doctor’s visit, there are some extra measures you can take at home to enhance your depression cures. In addition to taking any medication that your doctor has prescribed, you will also want to make an effort to spend a few more minutes out in the sunshine each day. The sun boosts vitamin D production in your body, which has a positive effect on your mood. Then you will want to make an effort to eat healthier, more natural foods, and to increase the amount of exercise and sleep you get. Your overall health and fitness level has a lot to do with your mood, as diet, sleep, and exercise all help to regulate mood-altering chemicals in the brain.

Therapy It is common for people to enter into a state of depression when the stresses of life become too much to bear. There are times in most people’s lives when it seems life just knocks you down, but that life also just keeps kicking you while you are down, too. During these times, you may feel depressed and like you just cannot cope. In addition to following the medical advice of your doctor, you may want to seek out therapy for depression cures that can help you better manage stress and deal with life’s issues.

While you may feel as though your life is just hopeless and there is no point in going on another day, you should grasp on to the knowledge that there are many depression cures available to you. In fact, when you make an appointment to see a doctor today, you will be on the right path to feeling much more like your old self in just a few days.

Phobias' Mystery Revealed – The Fear Factor

Phobias are provoked by traumas and by mistakes of the human conscience, which is undeveloped and functions based on one psychological function that is completely developed and another one partially developed, whereas the other 2 functions remain in an atrophic condition.

People make many mistakes because they follow their one-sided human conscience, which obliges the organism to defend itself by causing phobias. While all psychological disturbances and diseases are provoked by the anti-conscience, phobias are provoked by the wise unconscious to protect and cure the absurd selfish and one-sided human conscience.

Thus, phobias reflect the mistakes that a person is making. For example, if someone suffers from agoraphobia (fear of closed and crowded places), it is because he or she is staying in closed places for too long or being occupied in activities that are too concentrated only on one aspect, like one of the first patients I treated in 1990.

When someone suffers from thalassophobia (fear of the sea or ocean) he or she is afraid of the craziness in the wild side of their conscience. You can find more information about the meaning of the sea in dreams (and in reality that can be interpreted in the same way) in my article, "Dream Symbols-The Sea and Craziness."

I cured a girl who was afraid of the sea. She had too much hate accumulated in her psyche and was afraid of a nervous explosion or crisis; this is why she was afraid to even walk near the sea.

She was completely cured through dream interpretation, since she discovered what was causing her problems and what she had to do in order to be cured. In fact, dream interpretation is the only method through which we can easily understand which mistakes cause phobias and how they can be corrected.

In 1991, when I visited my father in Brazil after a long time, I observed he suffered from hierophobia (fear of sacred things and priests). We approached a church and I mentioned that he should talk with the priest and ask him if he could stay in the Catholic community and be treated by a nun, since he was becoming too old to live alone and his house was in a horrible state. His indifference to the mess and filth in the house was a confirmation of the degree of his craziness.

He is schizophrenic since I was born. However, he was always very kind with me because I inherited his facial characteristics and I was a quiet and intelligent child. He was a monster or a hypocrite actor to everyone else, depending on the situation.

I had to abandon the idea of entering in the church with him because he had a nervous attack as soon as we parked the car near the church. He started shouting and telling me that he did not need to confess anything, that he already had confessed to the priest of the church near his house, who was his confessor. He refused to get out the car and he looked so terrified that I understood that I should not insist.

I noticed he had removed a small statue of Saint Mary that once was at the front part of his house when I first came, but I did not ask him why it was not there anymore. He refused to even look at the church and he became very irritated with me because I had the idea of going there. This fear can easily be justified by his sins …

The girl who was afraid of the sea was also afraid of the lift. She never entered a lift, no matter how many stairs she had to walk up. This is a phobia that does not have a name because it is a phobia that started appearing only after invention of lifts, while the list of the existent phobias is considerably old. ( The Click here the if you want to see a list with all the known Phobias: Http://www.phobialist.com/reverse.html#E- The Indexed Phobias List)

The explanation for this fear is the same as fear of the sea. She had far too much hatred accumulated in her anti-conscience, which is represented by the sea in dreams and also represented by what exists underground. The girl was afraid to suddenly go underground (which could happen in the lift) because she would suddenly have to face all the hatred accumulated there.

All phobias have Greek names, so if someone speaks Greek like me, it is very easy to understand each phobia's meaning by its name.

However, the most important language one should know in order to be able to cure someone with phobias is the symbolic language of the unconscious by which we receive wise messages in our dreams.

Narcolepsy Facts

The dictionary definition of narcolepsy, "a condition characterized by frequent and uncontrollable periods of deep sleep" but this definition does not fully explain the challenges of the condition.

The primary symptom of narcolepsy is an exaggerated and almost overwhelming sleepiness during the daytime, even after a decent night's sleep. Another symptom is sleep that is often interrupted by frequently waking up.

In the most severe cases, people suffering from this sleeping disorder will fall asleep involuntarily at times and places that are inappropriate and can be dangerous as well. These "sleep attacks" last from just a few seconds to more than thirty minutes. They happen without any warnings whatsoever and make maintaining a normal work schedule or personal relationship very difficult, if not impossible.

Narcoleptics lack the vivid separation between wakefulness and sleep that most of us have. Many sufferers have reported that the distinction between being awake and being asleep is often hard to determine. This may be due to the fact that narcoleptics most frequently fall asleep directly into the dream rich REM state without gradually progressing through the non-REM stages first.

In addition to daytime sleepiness there are other symptoms as well but these may, or may not, be present in all cases.

  • Cataplexy. This is a sudden muscle weakness very similar to the extremity paralysis that occurs naturally during REM sleep. It will last from just a few seconds to several minutes and occurs while the person is awake. Cataplexy seems to be triggered by a quick emotional reaction of some sort such as laughter, anger, fear, or surprise. This sudden muscle weakness can cause anything from sagging facial muscles to a complete collapse.
  • Sleep Paralysis. This is a temporary inability to speak or move when suffering a narcoleptic episode. People with this symptom find themselves not able to move or talk both when falling asleep and when waking up.
  • Hypnogogic Dreams. These are extremely vivid dreams that happen when narcoleptics first fall asleep. Hypnogogic dreams are so realistic they frequently are confused with reality.

Sleep researchers estimate that up to 350,000 Americans suffer with narcolepsy but less than 50,000 have been correctly diagnosed. If this estimation is accurate, these numbers would make narcolepsy more widespread than Parkinson's disease or Multiple Sclerosis.

Narcolepsy is very difficult to diagnose and especially in those who have only the daytime sleepiness symptom. It is most frequently mistaken for depression or epilepsy, or even the side effect of other medications.

Correct diagnosis is most often determined through the use of a polysomnogram overnight sleep recording test (PSG) and a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). Both of these tests will show the signs of falling asleep quickly and directly into REM sleep.

While narcolepsy can occur at any time, the symptoms most frequently appear while still in adolescence or very early adulthood. Genetics seem to play a part as well as one in ten narcoleptics have a close family member who is also narcoleptic.

Recent research has revealed that narcoleptics do not seem to have a neurotransmitter called hypocretin whose job it is to ensure wakefulness. The current theory is that perhaps an autoimmune reaction caused by disease, heredity, or brain injury, destroys the cells that manufacture hypocretin but further research is needed.

Research continues most color : as the find sufferers sleep solutions with a variety of drug treatments and taking a couple of short 15 minute Naps During the day to control the daytime sleepiness.

What to Do With Your Ingrown Toenail

An ingrown toenail is a common condition for both men and women. It happens when the corner or side of one of your toenails grows into the soft flesh of that toe. It usually affects one of your big toes and if not taken care of properly can lead to pain, redness, swelling and sometimes infection. This usually happens when the toenail breaks the skin and bacteria enters and causes an infection. Sometimes, skin may start to grow over the ingrown part of the nail.

Many people with ingrown toenails take care of the condition by themselves. Warm soaks and proper nail trimming may be what is needed, but sometimes it is best to see a foot specialist when you first feel the pain and the pressure. If the pain is severe or it is spreading, a podiatrist can usually relieve your discomfort and help you avoid more complications of an ingrown toenail.

If you have diabetes or another condition that causes poor circulation to your feet, go directly to your doctor rather than risk any complications.

The signs and symptoms of an ingrown toenail include:

  • Pain and tenderness in your toe along one or both sides of the nail.
  • Redness around your toenail.
  • Swelling of your toe around the nail.
  • Infection of the tissue around your toenail.

There are many reasons why ingrown toenails develop some of which are congenital. For instance, your toenails may be too large. People whose toenails curl under are also prone to the condition. Stubbing a toe or having a toe stepped on or some other trauma can cause a piece of the nail to jam into the skin.

High heels are also a problem because the heel transfers most of your body weight toward the front of the foot. This puts more pressure on the big toe and often deforms them over the years. This can also lead to ingrown toenails.

However, the most common cause is cutting your toenails incorrectly causing them to re-grow into the skin. Tight hosiery or shoes with narrow toe boxes make matters worse.

What You Can Do About an Ingrown Toe Nail

Left untreated or undetected, an ingrown toenail can infect the underlying bone and lead to serious infection. If your symptoms are minor such as the toe being red and not very painful, and you don’t have a complicated condition such as diabetes, you can take some simple measures at home to treat your ingrown toe nail.

  • Soak the foot in lukewarm water 2 or 3 times a day for 15 minutes. I always add Epsom salts but I’m told there’s no scientific evidence this will heal anything or help the pain.
  • Massage the skin at the side of the toenail gently pushing it away from the nail.
  • Some suggest placing cotton under your toenail after soaking to help the nail grow above the skin edge. Some doctors say this is too risky because it traps bacteria.
  • However, do apply a topical antibiotic such as Neosporin or Polysporin or bacitracin. Cover the area with a band aid.

Preventing Ingrown Toenails

  • Wear sandals or other low-heeled open-toed shoes whenever possible.Wear low-heeled shoes that have enough room at the toes. If you wear stockings wear moisture-wicking socks so your toes move freely.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry.
  • Use a toenail clipper (not a fingernail clipper).
  • Cut your toenails across, going with the curve. Do not round the corners down and don’t cut the toenails too short.

If you toenail becomes infected it is  time to see a doctor such as a podiatrist (foot care specialist) or a dermatologist. You may need to take oral antibiotics for an infection and the doctor may have to remove the ingrown part of your nail.

Treatments For Toenail Fungus – Take Your Pick

Nail fungus is the fungal infection of the nail bed and the plate under the surface of the nail, and it is characterized by thickening of toenail along with yellowish discoloration, disfiguring, and splitting. Gradually, the toenail becomes rough and can get separated from the nail bed. In medical terms, nail fungus is known as “Onychomycosis” or “Ringworm of the Nail”. Toenail fungus can press against shoes causing irritation and pain. Also, it can cause social, psychological, and employment related problems. Toenail fungus is caused by three main groups of organisms which include dermatophytes, yeasts, and non-dermatophyte molds. Approximately 90% of the toenail fungal infections are caused by dermatophytes. Around 8% of the cases are due to yeast [Candia albicans] infections and non-dermatophyte molds cause the infection in 2% of the cases.

The fungus treatment for toenails is challenging because the infection is embedded within the nail which is difficult to reach. The toenail receives little blood supply and grows slowly. Therefore, medications and topical applications used in the treatment for toenail fungus will reach the infected site in little quantity which will not be sufficient to cure the infection. Hence, the infection responds slowly to the treatment and may take a year or more for complete removal of the symptoms. Treatment for toenail fungus includes various treatment options such as pharmacological treatment, laser treatment, and surgical treatment.

Pharmacological Treatment-

This line of treatment includes oral and topical anti-fungal medications. Newer oral anti-fungal drugs such as Itraconazole, Terbinafine have revolutionized the treatment for toenail fungus. As a standard line of treatment for toenail fungus, oral anti-fungal drugs are administered for 3 months. Terbinafine is administered daily for 3 months whereas Itraconazole is often prescribed in pulse doses. Pulse doses means it is administered one week in a month for 3 months.

These anti-fungal drugs produce fewer side effects with few contraindications such as congestive cardiac failure and liver diseases. Itraconazole should be avoided along with certain drugs because it interacts with few antibiotics such as Erythromycin and certain asthma drugs. About 50% to 75% of the cases respond very well to the oral anti-fungal therapy and in 20 to 25% of the cases toenail fungus can recur.

Oral anti-fungal therapy combined with topical and surgical treatments can reduce the duration and side effects of the oral therapy. In superficial toenail fungal infections, topical anti-fungal agents are advised which include ciclopirox, olamine and amorolfine. These topical agents are available in the form of nail paints which can be applied to the affected nail.

Laser Treatment-

A noveon type laser is used in the treatment for toenail fungus. This laser is also used for some types of cataract surgery.

Surgical Treatment-

In surgical treatment, nail fungus is removed surgically or chemically. In chemical removal, about 40-50% urea compound is used to remove infected nail. It is a painless procedure which is useful in patients with very thick toenail. Surgical removal of the infected toenail plate alone is not effective. Additional oral anti-fungal medications can be helpful. Combining oral and topical anti-fungal therapies with surgery increases the effectiveness of the surgical treatment.

Prevention-

Prevention of nail fungus is very important because the recurrence of toenail fungal infections is common. Do not wear wet socks, keep the nails dry, and do not wear tight shoes. Cut the toenail regularly to keep it short and while cutting the toenail do not dig into the corners. Athlete’s foot should be treated otherwise it may cause toenail fungus.

Sprain Solutions

Invariably in an active life, you are sure to face a sprained joint or ankle at some point. In my coaching experience, when that happens, we call in the training staff who routinely ices the injury first and then wraps it tightly with athletic tape for temporary stability. The athlete is asked to keep weight off the ankle or excessive movement from the joint for the first day. Thereafter the goal is to begin slowly working the offending body part back up to normal activity levels over the next week or so.

In non-professional sports environments, this is the traditionally accepted and a generally reasonable plan of action. Obviously the trainers are expected to quickly deal with the immediate problem with limited time / resources and then refer longer term rehabilitation issues to outside specialists.

Except for ligament tearing or joint and bone fractures (which WILL REQUIRE surgical repair), most sprains, can be effectively rehabilitated by yourself with a little discipline and fortitude. Temporary pain is part of the process, however if you put the effort in now, in the long run, you will risk far fewer painful injuries and extended downtime.

First, while wrapping is fine to allow immediate mobility, as soon as you can, rest the injury, remove the compression to allow fluids to leave the affected area. Long term compression risks prolonging inflammation and pain. As soon as practical elevate the injury and slowly begin to flex it and stretch. You should accept some discomfort, but the idea is not to suffer excessive pain. Do work the injury as often as you can increasing flexibility and range of motion more and more with each rehabilitation cycle.

Severe Sprains may more include an alternating cycle of both, hot packs (or hot water) and ice (or ice water). A Dr. Link attached arrangements 's kim from last year Describes the theory and benefits of this procedure, The main idea A is to limit nerve damage and swelling get down color : as soon color : as possible. Most of the typical turned-ankle type sprains I have encountered as a coach WILL NOT NEED protracted therapy of this type.

If you have suffered repeated ankle injuries, you may want to add a little Zen in the training regimen. Balance is the key ingredient in keeping active ankles healthy. As you complete a sprain rehab, add the following final steps to reduce weak ankle sprains over a lifetime. Simply close your eyes and practice standing still while perched on only one leg. Then repeat the process on the other leg. Continue the cycle until you can stand a full minute on each leg without wobbling to catch your balance. Now do not get too cocky – repeat the same procedure again except this time try standing on a sofa pillow.

So there you have it – an easy, up to date, and comprehensive method for dealing with sprains. With a little luck and a few hours of Flamingo standing practice on your pillow, you may never have need for athletic tape again? Is anyone else feeling hungry? – Oddly I have a sudden craving for a WRAP!
