One parent told me that her daughter signed up for an English class, and one of the pieces required for reading was pornographic in nature.

In their speech class, the class and the teacher were great, but another student in class gave a speech that was pornographic in nature. My children were trying hard to act cool, but as a parent, I was pretty mortified that I put them into that situation.

At a college fair I went to, a representative from one community college took me aside and told me to give a message to homeschoolers, that their children are sitting next to adjudicated adults – people who have just been released from prison and registered sex offenders. Community college is an adult environment. There is no way that adjudicated adults can be refused admission.

We were also astounded by the vulgar language. One of the calculus teachers would drop the F-bomb when he spoke all the time. I think he was trying to be cool and trying to fit in with the group. It's important to note that not all teachers do all of these things; we just found these to be true.

Community college is similar to a public high school atmosphere without the moderation that comes from being with other children. At community college you will see people smoking without being concerned that they're smoking, people swearing, etc. They bring this content into the classroom because they're all primarily grown adults; it's not a children's environment.

Students who are perfectionists tend to have more difficulty in community college. This is not an academic problem, because they can get an A with little effort. The problem comes when students transition from community college to a university. When they go on to university, all of the sudden much more effort is required to earn an A. When they realize they did not get A's because they were a genius, depression can be the result.

Carefully weigh the pros and cons before you enroll your student in this environment; the costs just may not be worth it.

Is Your Dog's Diet Making Them Sick?

Dogs will eat grass from time to time and this causes their stomachs to become upset, thus they will vomit. If your dog does this every once in a while, and there are only a handful of instances in a couple months, there is usually nothing to worry about. Issues should start to concern you when this is happening more than once within a twenty four hour period.

When you notice that abnormal vomiting, or more than twice within twelve hours, is occurring you should seek the help of your vet. If you have recently changed over your dog's diet to something different, such as buying a different brand of food because you did not have the money or the store was temporarily out of the brand you normally buy, then you should wait 24 hours and feed again. While your dog's system can get stressed by such changes, after 24 hours you should be able to feed him or her and nothing adverse will happen. This is just a minor stomach issue due to different food.

If your dog is showing signs of abnormal vomiting, such as more than once in a few hours or persistently over a 24 hour period, you should immediately stop feeding your dog for at least 24 hours. This will give its digestion time to work the last meal out of the body. If you notice a strong odor in the vomit it could be caused by an intestinal obstruction and your vet should know immediately. If the vomit has undigested food in it, it could mean overeating, anxiety, or food poisoning.

If your dog has not vomited within the 24 hours that you have taken them off food, you can then start them on a bland diet and see if they keep it down. While on this 24 hour fast you can give them water and ice cubes to help keep them hydrated. If they are vomiting after water or ice, take them to the vet immediately as there is a good chance that food poisoning or some other issue is involved that will require medical attention. The bland diet should consist of small portions of rice, sweet potatoes, or oatmeal and fully cooked poultry, lean pork or beef.

While the following lists are in no way complete, I have tried to include the most common and most dangerous substances that may be ingested by dogs. Also, be informed that while certain substances are poisonous to dogs and other animals regardless of the amount ingested, other poisonous substances can be tolerated in very small doses based on the amount ingested in relation to the animal’s weight. For instance, while chocolate is a widely-known toxin for dogs, a minimal amount of chocolate ingested by a large dog will most likely be filtered through his system without the need for a trip to the veterinarian.

Foods – The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center urges dog owners to avoid feeding the following foods to their pets: alcoholic beverages, avocado, baking powder, baking soda, chocolate, coffee, fatty foods, many fruit pits including those of cherries, peaches, avocados, and apricots, macadamia nuts, moldy or spoiled foods (such as those found in garbage), mushrooms, onions and onion powder, raisins and grapes, salt, yeast dough, garlic, and products containing the artificial sweetener xylitol.

Household products – Common household products can be extremely toxic to canines, such as automobile antifreeze, a liquid that can leak from some automobiles. The liquid is green in color and sweet to the taste. The dog only needs to lick a small amount of antifreeze off of the street or driveway to become poisoned. Other poisonous household products include cleaners such as Febreeze odor neutralizer, bleach, abrasive cleaners, cleaning solvents, dish washing detergent, laundry detergent, disinfectants, drain cleaner, furniture polish, paint and paint solvents, and more. Even office supplies such as indelible ink, pencils, and crayons should be kept in a secure place as these too are toxic when ingested. Personal care items such as hair dye and perfume are dangerous as well.

Medications – Dog owners should consult a veterinarian before administering any type of medication to their canines, especially those that are meant for human consumption. Ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol), cold and flu medications, and antidepressants are especially dangerous and should be kept out of reach of all pets. Illegal drugs, including marijuana, are also among the lists of poisonous substances.

Insecticides and Pesticides – These chemicals can be particularly attractive and enticing to dogs because they are commonly mixed with tasty food products to make them alluring to the pests they are meant to kill. Rat bait, snail bait, insecticides, moth repellent, and even some flea products are toxic when ingested by dogs and other animals. Some species of animals are especially sensitive to certain types of flea products, so do not use flea products interchangeably between dogs, cats, and other pets. Always consult a veterinarian first and read all instructions and indications.

Common Household Plants – The list of common household plants that are potentially poisonous to canines is extensive. According to the ASPCA, the 17 most common poisonous plants are as follows: lilies, marijuana, sago palm, tulip/narcissus bulbs, azalea/rhododendron, oleanders, castor bean, cyclamen, kalanchoe, yew, amaryllis, autumn crocus, chrysanthemum, English ivy, peace lilies, pothos, and schefflera. Some other common plants seen in many landscapes that may also be toxic to dogs are aloe vera, birds of paradise, daffodils, honeysuckle, poppies, geraniums, marigolds, oleanders, tomato plants, and many, many more. Seasonal decorative plants such as poinsettias, mistletoe, and Easter lilies should be kept out of reach of all pets. Even fertilizer is considered hazardous if ingested.

Eczema Causes – Why Do People Have Eczema?

Eczema, which looks like dermatitis or inflammation on the skin, is characterized by swollen, itchy and reddened skin. The look of it in a severe case can be scary. The causes of this syndrome can vary between a number of health conditions like allergies, stress (physical and / or mental), over using artificial substances in internal sections of body and environmental factors. This potentially serious disease has some root causes. Understanding the root causes of Eczema can be quite similar to understanding how a child turned into a criminal, or how a baby died, although sociological aspects are not relevant to this article.

The main reasons of Eczema have a lot to do with the lack of nourishment or caring about your body, and mainly the skin. Germs, toxins, pests, and bacteria are common sources that can cause inflammation on the skin that is typical to Eczema. Undernourishment of the skin is an aggravating factor for germ or toxin infestation. Germs and toxins tend to multiply its effect in the initial phases of Eczema due to lack of nutrients for the skin, and multiplies too fast for one to start nourishing the skin once it has fallen prey to the disease.

The causes of Eczema are not dependent on every unique biological factor which is different for every individual. The causes are usually more general.

Following can be the reasons of suffering from Eczema

Nutrient intake

A fully nourishing diet can make the difference between two people’s fate with regards to acquiring Eczema. Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, carbohydrate, fluids and sunlight are essential nourishments for the skin, most of which comes from healthy food. A serious lack of any of the components can result in skin malnourishment. Nutrition protects your health from the following invasions:

  • Pollen grains
  • Artificial chemical influences
  • Metal traces of aluminum, mercury
  • Petrochemicals
  • Various radiations that are toxic

It is also vital to realize that the tendency of being diagnosed with Eczema has often been associated with continued intake of food that causes diarrhea, gastritis, heart diseases or ulcers. Eczema can be related to continuous intake of rich food, laden with spices and calories. Excess intake of protein, lipids and fatty food can be possible causes of Eczema.

Hormones and thyroid

You are bound to feel a general uneasiness while you are experiencing hormone changes that affect functioning of certain parts of the body. This change can sometimes be related to a future possibility of Eczema. Thyroid functioning can go slack before Eczema strikes. Blood circulation may drastically decrease and cause the skin to receive less than 1/4th of the required blood supply. As a result, abnormal hormone and thyroid responses to drugs, medication, environment or another health condition can cause Eczema.


Eczema can be caused by an excess germ fighting tendency. As and when the body is meant to fight infection from germs, toxins, bacteria and viruses, it grows its power to an optimal level through natural adaptation. This mechanism can fault into over reaction, especially in cases of drastic change in stimuli.

A common source of eczema is infections from the growth of Candida albicans (or candidiasis), making the skin look like a bed of fungus. This is a syndrome which is known to be caused by excess intake of artificial products such as sweeteners, antibiotics and other medical drugs.

Toxin exposure

Toxins may enter the body through the digestive system, respiratory system or get absorbed by the skin. Facing toxins is a regular hazard which we face in modern timed of industrial development. It is important that the skin gets enough compensatory nutrition to stay protected against Eczema. The liver and kidney get congested due to toxin invasion. It is common for many with Eczema to have liver and / or kidney malfunction. As a common trend, it is seen that the way out of the bodily congestion for these toxins happens to be the skin. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that mainly effects women aged 15 to 44. However, anyone can be struck with this ailment. It isn’t contagious and develops when a person’s immune system cannot fight off foreign invaders.

There are many symptoms of Lupus. Extreme fatigue is the most common symptom. There is also a butterfly shaped rash that generally occurs on the cheeks and nose on an affected individual. Although it is not necessarily always present.

Headaches are a common complaint with this disease. Painful and swollen joints are also a universal symptom. It can become quite difficult to walk or move.

Blood tests generally reveal anemia in Lupus patients. Patients generally run a fever. Edema is found in feet, legs, hands, and also around the eyes. Another symptom can also be pain upon taking a deep breath.

Hair loss is a possibility with this disease. Raynaud’s disease can also be present. This is when the fingers can turn white or even blue when the individual becomes cold. Another sign of Lupus can be the development of mouth or nose ulcers. Other patients might experience an extreme sensitivity to light.

Lupus can affect pretty much any organ in the body and cause inflammation. This can lead to infections and possibly even kidney failure. A patient can also become severely depressed.

Any combination of symptoms can be present, but not necessarily every one of them. Lupus can also mimic other diseases making it difficult to diagnose. There will be a combination of symptoms taken into consideration plus lab work to determine if Lupus is present. It takes time to diagnose and with proper care, it is a treatable disease, although it is not curable.

The Anatomy of the Heart

Why talk about the heart from a medical point of view? How boring, unless you’re a doctor that is. Right?

Not necessarily.

By looking at the basic anatomy and physiology of the heart from a doctor’s perspective, we gain a unique privilege. We get to evaluate that perspective. Once we understand the underlying basis of medical treatments used to correct heart problems, we can make informed decisions as to which of those treatments and medications actually make sense for us…and, more importantly, what alternatives might actually work better. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at the human heart.

Quick facts

Your heart is located between your lungs in the middle of your chest, immediately behind and slightly to the left of your breastbone (sternum). In this location, it is protected by the breastbone in front, the spinal column in back, and the ribs on the sides. It weighs 7-15 ounces and is about the size of a human fist.

With each beat, the heart muscle expands and contracts, sending 2 to 3 ounces of blood on its way through the vascular system. The full circuit around the lungs and body (covering a mind boggling 50-60 thousand miles of branching blood vessels) takes only about one minute to complete when the body is at rest. In that same minute, your heart can pump some 1.3 gallons of blood to every cell in your body. Over the course of a day, we’re talking about 100,000 heartbeats shuttling some 2,000 gallons of oxygen rich blood throughout your body. That works out to some 35 million beats a year and an unbelievable 2.5 – 3.5 billion beats in a lifetime. Another way of looking at it is that the heart pumps approximately 700,000 gallons a year and almost 50 million gallons in an average lifetime.

Two circulatory systems

I will cover the circulatory system in detail in its own newsletter at a later date, but for now it’s important to understand in our discussion of the heart that the heart actually pumps blood through two very distinct circulatory systems.

Systemic Pulmonary

The systemic system is what most people think of when they think of the circulatory system. That’s the system that feeds the organs, tissues, and cells of your body. That’s the system in which fresh oxygenated blood pumps out through the arteries and in which deoxygenated blood returns to the heart through the veins. The pulmonary system is actually quite different – just the opposite in fact. Deoxygenated blood is pumped out of the heart through the pulmonary arteries into the lungs, and recharged oxygenated blood returns to the heart through the veins. It is this recharged oxygenated blood that gets pumped out through the systemic circulatory system. Understanding these differences will be important later. For now, just consider the simple fact that these two separate systems must be perfectly balanced in terms of input and output. If for example, the pulmonary system is just one drop a minute behind the systemic system, in short order, the left ventricle of the heart (the chamber that pumps blood out to your body) will become under-filled with blood and cease to function efficiently.

Construction of the heart

The tissue of the heart is comprised of three layers. The primary layer, the middle layer, is called the myocardium. This is the actual muscle tissue of the heart and the part of the heart that will feature most prominently when we talk later about what can go wrong with the heart. The myocardium is a thick strong muscle and comprises the bulk of the heart. It is formed of smooth involuntary muscle like your intestines and your bladder – but with a several key differences.

It has built in rhythmicity. That is to say, unlike other muscle tissue, it is self-stimulating and doesn’t require a signal from the nervous system to contract.

The muscle tissue itself has a spiral structure that allows for the twisting action of the heart as it contracts with each beat. (We’ll talk more about this later.)

The myocardium is lined on the inside (where all the blood is pumping) with a thin membrane called the endocardium. On the outside, the myocardium is enclosed by a membranous sac filled with fluid called the pericardium. The outside of the pericardium sac is pressed against the lungs and the chest wall. The inside of the sac (called the visceral pericardium) is actually attached to the heart muscle.

The purpose of the sac is to hold the heart in place, protect it, and eliminate inflammation by protecting the heart from friction as it beats. If you think about it, every time the heart beats it expands and contracts rubbing and sliding against the lungs and the chest wall. It is the fluid filling the pericardial sac that allows the inner and outer parts of the sac to slide against each other with no friction thus allowing the heart to beat some 2.5 – 3.5 billion times in a lifetime without rubbing itself raw.

The heart itself is divided into four chambers: the right and left atria and the right and left ventricles. As you can see below, it is separated vertically by part of the myocardium heart muscle. Horizontally, the two halves are further divided by two valves – the mitral or bicuspid valve on the left side of the heart and the tricuspid valve on the right.

The flow of blood through those chambers is actually quite simple.

All of the deoxygenated blood in need of “recharging” returns to the heart through the large veins called the vena cava (anterior and posterior). The two vena cavae empty into the right atrium, the first chamber in the heart. (Incidentally, one of the definitions of atrium is a forecourt of a building – which is essentially what the atria are: forecourts to the two ventricles.) From there, the blood passes through the one-way tricuspid valve into the right ventricle, which pumps it out through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary aorta and into the lungs.

Note in the illustration above how much smaller the left ventricle is than the right and how much thicker the muscles are surrounding it (about 4 times thicker). The reason is simple. Smaller chamber and greater force of contraction means greater pressure. When you consider that the right ventricle only needs to push the blood a few inches into the lungs and back, whereas the left ventricle needs to push the blood throughout the entire body, this makes sense. In fact, the left ventricle produces about 4 times the pressure of the right ventricle. It is through this difference in pressure that the body keeps the blood supply perfectly balanced between the two chambers even though they are powering two entirely different circulatory systems.

Once oxygenated, the blood makes the short trip back through the pulmonary veins and back into the heart, entering through the left atrium. This is the pulmonary circulatory system we referred to above.

From the left atrium, the oxygenated blood passes down through the one-way mitral valve and into the left ventricle. From there, the large muscles surrounding the left ventricle squeeze the blood out through the aorta as it starts its circuit out to every single cell in the body.

The valves

At this point, a quick discussion of the two main valves in the heart (the mitral or bicuspid valve, and the tricuspid valve) makes sense.

In construction and function, the two valves are quite simple, but extremely important. Fundamentally they look like parachutes with tendons or cords running down into the ventricles to keep them from opening too far. (See below.) When there is no blood in the ventricle below them, there is no pressure on the valves, and they are in the open position. In the open position, blood can passively move from the atrium above down through the openings in the valve into the ventricle below. Once the ventricle fills with blood and the heart contracts creating pressure in the ventricle, that pressure pushes up on the bottom of the valve forcing it closed so the blood cannot flow back into the atrium above. At that point, the blood has only one way out of each ventricle – through the main pulmonary artery in the right ventricle and the aorta in the left ventricle. The system is brilliant, totally passive, and amazingly durable. For most people it functions flawlessly for 70-100 years, through 2.5 billion plus heartbeats.

The coronary arteries

Once the oxygenated blood leaves the heart and heads into the aorta, it almost immediately encounters the first two blood vessels off the aorta: the left and right coronary arteries. These are the main arteries that feed the heart muscle, the myocardium. One of the first things you’ll notice in the illustration below is how much branching and redundancy there is in the arteries and veins that feed the heart.

The medical term used to describe this branching is anastomosis. You don’t have to remember it. Just remember that the blood vessels of the heart have many branches that reconnect in multiple places to provide alternate pathways for the blood in case one branch is blocked. In fact, there is so much redundancy, that your heart can function with no visible symptoms with up to 70% blockage. It’s almost as though nature anticipated the western fast food diet and built in a huge reserve capacity knowing how aggressively we would seek to clog the system up.

The electrical system

We’ve established the basic bio-mechanics of the heart, but there’s one key question we haven’t addressed yet:

What makes the heart muscle contract?

Fundamentally, the contraction of the heart is an electrical phenomenon – or more precisely, a bio-electrical phenomenon based on the movement of sodium, calcium, and potassium ions across membranes. (We’ll cover this in more detail in a moment.)

For now, just understand that when a muscle cell is excited, an electrical signal is produced and spreads to the rest of the muscle cell, causing an increase in the level of calcium ions inside the cell. The calcium ions bind and interact with molecules associated with the cell’s contractile machinery, the end result being a mechanical contraction. To simplify this, a sodium ion starts the stimulation of the cell, a calcium ion extends that stimulation to allow the entire muscle to contract before potassium comes along and tells the muscle cell to relax for a moment and get ready for the next wave. Even though the heart is a specialized muscle, this fundamental principle still applies. (Makes you think about the importance of minerals in the diet, doesn’t it?) One thing, however, that distinguishes the heart from other muscles is that the heart muscle, as we’ve already discussed, has built in rhythmicity. Thus, an electrical excitation that occurs in one cell easily spreads to neighboring cells.

Under normal circumstances, the initial electrical excitation that starts the beat of the entire heart originates in the pacemaker cells of the sinoatrial node, located on top of the right atrium. This small group of cells pretty much serves as the impulse-generating pacemaker for the heart and normally discharges about one hundred times per minute. These impulses move down through fibers in the myocardial wall and come together in the atrial ventricular node where they are slowed down before entering and stimulating the controlled contraction of the muscles surrounding the two ventricles.

As mentioned in the paragraph above, there is a moment of rest in the contraction of the muscle cells as the heart prepares for its next beat. This moment of rest is actually critical as we will discuss in the next newsletter as a spurious impulse during this rest period can cause premature contractions leading to compromised filling and poor ejection of blood from the heart. This can lead to life threatening arrhythmias that so severally compromise the heart’s ability to pump that death can occur quickly.

As an interesting side note, when doctors or EMTs use a defibrillator to get a “fluttering” heart going again, the primary effect is to depolarize the heart muscle and actually stop the heart. The electric shock from the defibrillator doesn’t switch the heart back on. Instead, defibrillation actually stops the heart briefly! It’s this stoppage of the heart that allows the sinoatrial node to reestablish control of the heartbeat.

The famous microbiologist Dr. Michael F. Jacobson coined the phrase “Junk Food” in 1972 to describe unhealthy or non-nutritious food. It contains little or zero nutritious value to the diet – too much unnecessary calories and fat which are useless and harmful to human health.

Junk food has been a part of the American society for years and now it has become an addiction for many people.

They are very convenient to purchase and consume, which is one reason that millions of busy Americans don’t think about a healthy diet or spend the time to prepare healthy meals. It is also very popular among children, and with every passing day, its addiction is increasing.

Scientists and researchers have been talking about adverse effects of junk food for decades. The harmful effects which are associated with junk food eating are generally characterized as short-term effects and long-term effects.

Short Term Impacts on Health

Reduced Energy

Though a person may eat a sufficient quantity of junk, they will still feel weakened since it contains little, if any, nutritional value.

Reduced Concentration

People who eat too much junk food, which is rich in oil and fat, may not be able to concentrate on work, they may feel drowsy, and their blood circulation may decrease.

Long Term Impacts on Health

Heart Disease

Eating “junk” is one of the primary causes of heart disease – Myocardial infarction being one example. This occurs when plaque is formed in the arteries that are connected to the heart. These arteries have to work extra hard to pump blood downstream, which in turn creates circulation problems. Heart fatigue and heart attack can also often be associated with it.

High Cholesterol

Junk diet also creates high cholesterol which affects your liver. Continuous consumption of it may completely damage your liver, or at least disturb your metabolism.

To conclude, it can be said that junk foods can be used occasionally, but using them on a regular basis is very unhealthy and harmful. They could easily destroy your health and fitness. The enticement towards junk foods is very high, especially among children. It is vital to remember that Health is Wealth.
