This is known as heart attack. Due to the blockage of the clot in the large vessel that supplies blood towards the heart, there will no longer be enough oxygen to keep the heart from functioning. These conditions are an emergency although rarely happen.

A thrombotic hemorrhoid constricts blood flow and thrombosis is aggravated with decreased blood flow. This is a vicious cycle. If this condition is not addressed right there and then, chances are you’ll be facing more problems in the future.

New Product Development Outline For New Energy Bar – Product Life Cycle and Pricing Planning

The new PowerBar GelBar combines two growing market segment products into one – the growing segment of energy drinks and the growing, yet moving quickly towards mature, market of energy bars. In this stage of product development, it is necessary to focus on the product life cycle stage of the bar, the upcoming stages and our contingency plan for each as we reach it, marketing mix actions that can be taken to promote the product, and touch briefly on the initial pricing strategy.

Product life cycle stage currently

Despite the fact that GelBar combines a growing product with a growing/mature product, I believe GelBar is in its introduction phase. However, because of the nature of the ingredients, it is a non-disruptive product that will likely mirror a low learning curve product. This means the introduction stage will be short and fast. Because of this, I expect competition for the GelBar quickly once the product is launched.

There is some logic behind claiming that the product is in fact an extension of the growth stage for PowerBar and a way for the firm to stave off the decline in the maturity stage. From a macro perspective, this is true, but the product itself must start in the introduction stage. Because the firm will view the product as new growth product, GelBar will enjoy market exposure and a large advertising budget potential that will allow it to penetrate the market quickly and with large customer awareness.

Planning for future product life cycle stages

Introduction – Launch product with intensive marketing efforts and skimming pricing. Package the product in flashy packaging to attract customers to purchase the product. Launch in limited markets to test customer reactions and correct problems in the product prior to mass market.

Growth – During this phase, I expect multiple competitors to enter the market. More flavors of the GelBar can be introduced and the promotion would focus on the differences between GelBar and the competition. We will expand the locations that offer GelBar as we roll out the product launch across multiple markets.

Maturity – Continue to introduce new product variations until GelBar reaches a full product line. Stock the product in all stores with an impulse buy section, including gas stations, athletic stores, grocery stores, and others.

Decline – Slowly cut the production of the bar and offer alternative bars to encourage customers to switch while reducing the cost of switching (i.e. reduce the risk of losing according to the prospector theory). Begin to replace the GelBar with the next innovation at select outlets to test the new products.

Promoting GelBar using the marketing mix – three strategies for pushing the product forward

Product – With multiple bars and energy drinks on the market, product packaging and ease of use are paramount. GelBar should be promoted with a product size similar to a Snickers to facilitate the idea of a snack on the go. The physical packaging of the bar should emphasize the combination of the ingredients inside. Possible combinations include two-tone packaging that focuses on the orange color of 5 Hour Energy and the gold of PowerBar or black and white to visually emphasize the two distinct ingredients.

Bundling of the product is also important. The bar should be available in both singles and pack form. This pack form would allow the serious athlete to purchase 6 to 10 bars at a time for a reduced price per bar. By increasing the amount of bars available to purchase at a single time, GelBar appeals to higher-end athletes as well as discount membership stores such as Sam’s Club or Costco.

Promotion – Because the initital market for GelBar is high-end sports enthusiasts, advertising will be limited to clearly relevant sporting events. Possible events and end user groups include community sporting events, high school sporting events, corporate-sponsored sports, and professional sports athletes.

As the product matures in the product life cycle, general advertising will be used. By getting sports athletes on board at an early stage, natural promotion will happen as fans see athletes using GelBar at sporting events. Additionally, GelBar can hire celebrity endorsements from these initial professional sports adopters. This will increase GelBar’s visibility to the average consumer and will help to increase sales as the placement of GelBar is also expanded into the growth and maturity stages of the product life cycle.

Placement – GelBar is meant for serious athletes, thus placement initially will be in high-end sports shops and venues such as professional or amateur league sporting events. These limited test markets will allow us to correct customer complaints with the new product before rolling it out to grocery stores and health food stores regionally. Because we feel GelBar may be both a planned and impulse purchase, the product should be stocked in two locations within every venue – both near the cash register for impulse buys and near other energy bars for planned purchases.

Once the product matures, GelBar should be in every gas station, discount membership retailer, grocery store, workout facility and athletic equipment store. This large market penetration will provide the most value for customers as GelBar will be readily accessible while working out or at short notice.

Setting the price of GelBar to accomplish these goals

GelBar is a high end product initially that becomes a mass consumer product as it matures. Because of this, a skimming pricing strategy would work the best at first. While GelBar should be given away at sporting events to minimize prospector theory impacts to the end user at first, eventually the product should be priced above the market rate for an energy bar when it is launched across a few select markets. This high price will ensure only the high-end athlete buys the bar and creates GelBar as a status energy bar.

However, once competition begins to enter the market, the price needs to be reworked. The end goal of the pricing strategy is to become similar in mentality to Gatorade or Powerade, both brands that are synonymous with a workout food.

Careful analysis of the product life cycle and understanding what each stage looks like will be key to successfully launching and promoting the GelBar. By utilizing different marketing mix strategies at each product life cycle stage, GelBar can stay one step ahead of the competition and maintain its market share. Using each stage of the life cycle, including decline, as a way to promote GelBar will lock in the core customer – the elite athlete, while at the same time making sure the product is readily accepted by the mass consumer when we launch into the mass market segment.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer – (Stages 0-4)

After non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has been diagnosed in a patient it is given what is called a “stage.” This describes both the size of the tumor, and to what extent the tumor has spread within the body. Once diagnosed, a more accurate prognosis (life expectancy) of a patient can be given. There are five main stages of NSCLC (0, 1, 2, 3, 4). Each of these stages is further divided into more specific sub-stages.

(Stages 0-4)

– 0 The cancer has not spread past the inner lining of the lungs; also known as carcinoma in situ (CIS).

– 1 The cancer is localized within the lungs but has not yet spread to the lymph nodes.

– 1A (the tumor is 3 cm or less in diameter).

– 1B (the tumor is greater than 3 cm in diameter).

– 2 The cancer has either spread outside the lungs to the nearby lymph nodes, or has NOT yet spread to the lymph nodes, but is localized in a certain area of the main bronchus (tubes that allow air to pass between the trachea and the lungs). The tumor may also be located in an area where it has invaded the lining of the lungs, or the wall of the chest.

– 2A (the tumor is 3 cm or less and has spread to the lymph nodes).

– 2B (the tumor is greater that 3 cm and has spread to the lymph nodes. It may also be present in the main bronchus region, has invaded the lining of the lungs, or wall of the chest.

– 3 The cancer has spread to the nearby tissue of the lungs.

– 3A (the tumor is lager in size and has spread to the lymph nodes. At this stage multi-tumors of any size may have spread away from the main tumor area).

– 3B (tumors of any size that have spread to distant lymph nodes and have invaded other organs such as the esophagus, the heart, or tumors with malignant pleural effusion [an abnormal amount of fluid in the space between the tissue that lines the inside of the lungs]).

– 4 The cancer has reached its most dangerous stage by having spread to other organs of the body, including another lobe of the lung.

Doctors may often describe NSCLC with a system called TNM. This system is used to further classify lung cancer within its sub-stages. Each letter stands for a different degree (stage) of the disease.

T – (the size of the tumor).

N – (indicates which lymph nodes have been invaded).

M – (defines whether the cancer has metastasized).

Acute bronchitis is a common respiratory disease that causes inflammation of the bronchial mucosal membranes. Unlike chronic forms of the disease, acute bronchitis has a rapid onset and generates more intense symptoms. However, acute bronchitis doesn’t have a recurrent character and thus its generated symptoms don’t persist in time. Due to the fact that the clinical manifestations of acute bronchitis are unspecific, pointing to various types of respiratory diseases, sometimes it can be difficult for doctors to quickly find the correct diagnosis. Thus, doctors usually perform additional tests in order to confirm the presumptive diagnosis. However, even laboratory tests can sometimes fail to reveal conclusive evidence of acute bronchitis. Considering this fact, the majority of patients with suspected acute bronchitis are commonly diagnosed after they receive elaborate physical examinations.

Most symptoms of acute bronchitis are outwardly visible. The disease generates symptoms such as mucus-producing cough, chest pain and discomfort (intensifying with deep breaths), wheezing, difficult, shallow and accelerated breathing. If this symptom persists for more than 8 weeks, it may point to chronic bronchitis.

The texture and the color of the expectorated mucus are major indicators for the seriousness of the disease. For instance, the expectoration of clear, colorless mucus may disclose infectious forms of acute bronchitis. By contrast, abundant expectoration of yellowish or dark-colored mucus may point to bacterial infection of the bronchial membranes. Blood-producing cough usually points to severe forms of acute bronchitis, suggesting that the lungs are also affected by the disease. The majority of patients with acute bronchitis may experience an exacerbation of cough during the night or in the first hours of the morning.

Although doctors often perform laboratory analyses of mucus samples, tests such as Gram staining aren’t very accurate in revealing traces of bacterial infection. Even in the cases of serious infection, most laboratory tests may only reveal the presence of benign bacterial flora at the level of the respiratory tract. In spite of medical progress and the wide range of medical techniques available nowadays, the presence of acute bronchitis in patients is rarely revealed by routine laboratory tests. Thus, acute bronchitis is usually diagnosed according to the results of more elaborate physical examinations.

Radiography, spirometry and pulse oximetry are rarely used in the process of diagnosing acute bronchitis. These tests are recommended to patients with complicated forms of acute bronchitis that involve spreading of the disease at pulmonary level.

Crime Scene Forensics – Analyzing Broken Glass Found at a Crime Scene

Suppose a victim called police and notified that somebody committed a drive-by shooting on his house. Crime scene investigators (CSI’s) then show up to investigate the crime. One of the things they look at is the broken glass through which the bullet or bullets pass. Such evidence can tell a story to the technician with a keen eye for the details found in broken glass.

The manner in which glass breaks many times presents clues with regard to how it was broken. For instance, glass that was broken by a speeding baseball will have a different pattern of fracture than glass that was broken by a speeding bullet.

Particular break characteristics allow a forensic scientist to ascertain the direction from which the impact came. They include a special kind of stress-fracture lines called conchoidal lines. Conchoidal lines are lines that emanate from the site of impact. When viewing glass through its thickness, these lines curve out and away from the point of impact in a curve resembling a seashell curve.

If the investigator takes a closer look at the conchoidal lines, he can see tiny lines that radiate almost 90 degrees from the conchoidal lines. These fracture lines are known as hackle marks.

Cracks in windows and other flat plates of glass such as windshields tend to radiate and concentrate. When viewing the glass perpendicularly from the surface, one can see radial cracks that radiate outward from the impact point. Picture this like the spokes that radiate from the center of a wheel.

Again, when viewing the glass perpendicularly from the surface, one would also find cracks that concentrate around the impact point and are called concentric cracks. Concentric cracks are cracks that form progressively larger circles around the impact point. Picture this as a circle within a circle within a circle….all surrounding the impact point.

If a speeding bullet strikes a window and penetrates it but does not completely break it, the destruction may leave behind a hole accompanied or not accompanied by the aforementioned fracture lines.

On one side of the impact (the entrance side), the hole will be small and clean. On the other side of impact (the exit side), a small conical piece of glass would have been removed. CSI’s would normally view the glass from both sides to determine a bullet’s trajectory; i.e. whether the bullet was fired from the outside of the house in as in the case of a drive-by shooting or vice versa.

Narcolepsy and Sleep Paralysis – A Fishy Tale

There can not be many people who have not seen the film "Moby Dick", either in its original 1956 version with Gregory Peck, or the more recent 1998 television adaptation with Patrick Stewart. Although sleep paralysis would not be described by the American neurologist Weir Mitchell for another 25 years, this gives us a vivid account of a condition that has been around since the dawn of time.

Sleep paralysis is one of a number of unwanted events that occur during sleep (including sleep walking, nightmares, night terrors and restless legs syndrome) and about half of us will experience at least one episode of sleep paralysis during our lifetime. In other words, the body's immune system, instead of attacking foreign invaders, attacks healthy cells (in this case hypocretin or orexin molecules) and destroys them.

So what does all this mean for narcolepsy sufferers?

Well, it certainly does not mean that a cure will appear tomorrow, but it does mean that scientists now know how to cure the condition. On the one hand they can look at methods of preventing the body's immune system from attacking hypocretin or orexin molecules and, on the other hand, they can develop a method of replacing the lost molecules.

This will of course require further research and clinical trials and will take some years. In the meantime, sufferers will need to stick with their current recognized drug treatments and continue to pursue a policy of sound sleep hygiene and behavioral management. But the knowledge that scientists have now pinpointed the cause of narcolepsy and that a cure is at last in the pipeline should act as very good encouragement for anybody living with narcolepsy today.
