Once pain free motion is attained, strengthening exercises are advised to help the ankle regain its former strength and to keep the joint flexible. A gradual return to full activity is recommended, for example walking half the distance and running half, gradually increasing the amount of time spent running. If you suffer from repeated ankle sprain, consider taping the ankle before undertaking activities. This will give the joint some support and hopefully prevent sprains from reoccurring.

Top-10 Strategies to Improve Math Grades

Many students and parents ask for pointers and techniques for to best learn Math. Here is a top-10 list and applies to any level of Math:

1) If you do not understand something , focus on mastering that topic before moving on to the next topic. It sounds simple, but it is absolutely essential. Lets say a student is learning Algebra, for example. Further, lets say he or she is having a hard time understanding how to add and subtract negative and positive numbers. All of us struggle with this in the beginning as it is a sticky point for most students. Some students in this situation, out of frustration that they "can not" learn this topic, will move on to the next lesson in the hope that they will be able to understand that one.

This is a recipe for disaster.

Math is very much like learning to read. If you do not know your letter sounds then you have no hope of being able to sound out words of course there is no way possible that you could read a book. All math courses are taught in a specific sequence because the every topic builds on the previous topic. If you are having a problem with a topic, continue working with that one until you understand it and can work problems successfully. Watch the DVD section over again, attend tutoring, read the book and examples a second time, or even get a totally different book to have it explained a different way … but whatever you do not turn the page and tackle the next topic. If you do, you will get even more frustrated and you in all likelihood will begin to give up hope.

2) Work example problems and check your answers to gain practice with every lesson. The entire premise of the DVD series is to "learn by example" and it is quite simply the easiest way to learn Math. After watching the section on the DVD and reading the section in your textbook, begin working examples from the end of the chapter. Make sure to work the problems that have answers in the back of the book, and check every one. Always begin with the easiest problem in your book, even if you think it will be too "easy" to solve. It is very very important to build your confidence. This is why the DVD lessons begin with easier problems that no one will have any issue understanding. Gradually work harder and harder problems from your book and check your answer for each one. After working a dozen or more problems from the section (two dozen is best), you are ready to move on to the next section. Many students want to plow though a lesson just to make it to the next one. You can not just read a section in a Math book and become an expert on that section. You must work problems. If you can not work problems then you are not ready to move on. The good news is that working problems will build your confidence, and confidence is 100% the name of the game in Math.

3) When beginning to work a Math problem, do not "map out a path from problem-to-answer" in your head before writing anything down. I see this almost every day. It is very common when someone looks at a Math problem that they try to "figure it out" in their head before writing anything down. Take Algebra for example. When a beginning student looks at an equation, he or she will be tempted to solve the equation in their head and not write anything down. Students are tempted to do this most often with Word Problems. Since a word problem is written in sentence form, it is common to think that you can "think your way to the answer". I will tell you that I never, ever, solve any sort of math problem without writing it down. Ever.

What you need to do is begin by first writing down the problem. Then you begin to solve it one step at a time. Write down even the simple things. What you need to ensure is that every single step that you write down is perfectly legal. In other words, if you are solving an equation for example and you subtract "10" from both sides …. write that down. Then in the NEXT step actually do that subtraction. Then if you need to divide both sides by "2" write THAT down … then in the NEXT step actually do the division. This gives you a paper trail to check your work and also it allows you to break the problem down in to bite sized chunks. If you can be sure that every single little step is legal, then you will be in good shape. If you try to do too many things at one time, which is common, you will probably try to do something illegal and get into trouble.

4) When you study and do homework , try to find a quiet place to do it.

I was the worst offender of this while in school. I used to listen to music all of the time while trying to do homework. I'd also listen to the TV as' background noise "while studying. Over time I realized that if I had a quiet place without the background noise, I could focus much better. What I found is that when reading, for example .. .I would have to read something perhaps 3 or 4 times if I was listening to something else but only once if I had some quiet. People love to listen to music while studying, but I am convinced that it is much more effective if you don 't. Try to find a quiet spot in your home or in the Library to get your schoolwork done and you will get your work done much more quickly because you'll be able to focus and absorb more.

5) If someone asks you for help , try to explain the topic to them as best you can.

This one is going to seem a little odd for this list … but there is one universal truth. Those who can teach others have a true grasp of the material. Many times when studying in groups there will be one member of the group who is behind and does not "get it". Try to help that person, even if your own work will take longer. Not only will you feel like you are helping someone else succeed, but the process of rephrasing information back to someone else and breaking things down into bite sized chunks will increase your own understanding. It will help you understand at a fundamental level what the stumbling blocks are for the topic, which will help you as you move on in your math studies.

6) Never, ever work math problems in pen.

This one is pretty simple. You will make a mistake; it is only a matter of time. When you do, you will want to completely erase your mistake and write over it. You will never, ever want to scratch something out and write next to the scratch-out. This will lead to a paper that is hard to read, and the scratch-outs will actually increase your anxiety about solving these problems. You want clean-neat paper with a clean well thought-out solution.

7) Try to use a mechanical pencil with separate eraser, if you can. Mechanical pencils have cleaner lines and the separate eraser allows you to erase more cleanly. Nothing is worse than making a mistake and trying to erase something then just smearing that all around your page. The cheap erasers will do this and make your life hard. Invest in a good mechanical pencil and a good separate eraser.

8) Keep your solutions neat and line -by-line. Always work problems vertically, with one step on every line. Never work horizontally. It may take more paper, but you will be able to follow your steps much more easily. More importantly, the teacher will be able to follow your work much better which allows him / her to give you partial credit. If there are just 2 steps when there should be 10, you will not be getting any points for your thought process. The steps you write down tell the teacher what you are thinking and how you are attacking the problem.

9) Do not work problems very late at night. I know all of the college students will be laughing at this, but it is true. I have tried many, many times to do Calculus or Physics late at night, after 12 or 1am, but you are just doing yourself a disservice. I have stared at problems for hours because I just could not sleep until I knew how to solve it … then I finally fell asleep out of extreme fatigue … but when I woke up it just seemed so simple how to proceed with the problem. Also, I have worked problems at night and got the wrong answer, and I knew I must have a silly mistake in the solution. I would usually set out to find it, but many times when you are tired you simply can not find the silly mistake. The next morning after about 5 minutes I could spot the simple sign error or even a simple multiplication error that caused the problem.

10) If the problem lends itself to it, draw a picture of the problem. This is most applicable for Trigonometry, Calculus, and Physics Students, but also applies to any word problem in basic math or algebra. Please do yourself a favor and draw a picture of what the problem is describing, even if your picture is simple. We are visual beings … the process of drawing the situation causes us to internalize what the problem is really asking for. It helps figure out how to proceed. If you are in Physics, you should draw a picture for every single problem that you work out. If you are in Calculus, definitely draw pictures for all related rate problems. If you are in Calculus 2 or Calculus 3, definitely draw a picture of all of your 3-dimensional problems (3d integrals). If you are in basic math and Jenny gives Bob 2 pencils and Bob gives 1 pencil away, draw that situation. It will really help you figure out how to proceed.

Remember, there is no silver bulet in learning Math. It comes with taking things one step at a time and with practice. The tips above will help you along in your math studies, and give you confidence. And confidence is 100% the name of the game in learning any level of Math.

The Many Types of Worms in Dogs and Their Symptoms

There are many signs and signals that can indicate your dog might have worms and they can range from the very mild to the very severe, all depending on the type of worm you might be dealing with, but every now and then your dog might not show any signs what so ever. Keep in mind no matter what type of worm it is that your dog will begin to show signs or symptoms of it eventually and you need to know what the symptoms are so you can help your pet as soon as possible.

These are a couple of very general signs that something is not right with your dog. Should your dog begin to lose weight with out any other known reason, their fur starts to look different or dull rather than shinny, and especially if your dog vomits more than once or once in a while, these are all signs that something is not right with your dog and it’s possible that they may have worms. One of the most noticeable signs that your dog has worms is if they are coughing.

It is a rare moment that your dog will cough, it happens but only once in a while. For a dog it’s not normal for them to cough except on rare occasion and a coughing dog should be taken seriously.

Different forms of worms:

There are currently around 8 different forms of the common worm and each give off a slightly different set of symptoms. These are; Tape Worms, Round Worms, Whip Worms, Pin Worms, Hook Worms, and last are Heartworms. Heartworms are the most serious form of worms that your dog can get and these will show you the very serious symptoms.

Tapeworms (Cestoda) – They just might be the very easiest type of worm for you to know that your dog has, these worms are flat and long and they have many different segments in their bodies. More often then not you will see these worms in your dogs stool and they will look sort of like little pieces of rice. Some times they may also be found around your dogs anus, which is one reason that you might see your dog dragging its bottom on the ground. This type of worm may be transmitted by fleas, but its more common that they will get this type of worm by eating grain based dog foods that have been contaminated by the worms.

Symptoms – One sign that will really get your attention is when you see your dog dragging their bottom across the floor, that’s because this worm will give your dog a very itching rear end. This type of worm may also cause your dog to vomit, have diarrhea, and if it’s a very severe infestation they may even develop anemia. These are similar to the pinworm but a bit more severe.

Whipworms (Trichuris vulpis, Trichuris campanula) – These are thin and long worms that your dog can get from another dog or from something that has the worms in or on it. Whipworms live in the large intestine and cecum (a small ‘dead-end’ portion of intestine lying at the junction of the small intestine and large intestine). They can remain dormant for months or even years and are extremely contagious.

Symptoms – The very first sign that your dog has this specific type of worm will be shown in intestinal stress. Typically it will start with having gas and that will turn into diarrhea. This can also create dehydration that can also be very dangerous.

Roundworms (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonine) – These very common little buggers are completely different from whipworms, in the sense that they can become extremely large and have been known to get up to twelve centimeters long (that’s almost 5 inches long)! In addition, they multiply very quickly and because of this they can be found in large numbers.

Adult dogs may get roundworms through food or water that contains the worms, or by way of contact with feces or vomit from another infected animal. Although the thought of it may make you want to vomit yourself, it is a known fact that dogs will eat just about anything, including the feces or vomit of other animals.

Puppies may get an infestation while they are still in the womb or even from the milk of their mother should she have this type of worm. In almost all cases, should one pup have worms the rest will also have them. This specific type of worm is very sticky and it resembles a piece of cooked spaghetti when it comes to texture and appearance, this worm can be passed between both dogs and humans.

Symptoms – In puppies you will see a sudden onset of colic, crying and whimpering that doesn’t seem to stop. A mother dog with this form of worm will have trouble producing milk for her pups. Other adult dogs may have swelling in their abdomen that will be followed by vomiting. Their feces will be strange looking (black with brown and possibly orange swirls) and you will be able to see the worms moving around in their feces. Should this worm move into the lungs, your dog will also start to cough.

Pinworms (Enterobius) – These are the small white type of worms that typically will be transmitted by way of contaminated water or food. These little parasites will move into the dogs’ stomach area and eventually they will come out the rear of your dog. These are extremely common and may cause every intense itching near the anus. Even though these are a type of worm they are not really harmful, but still quite bothersome for your best friend.

Symptoms – As this type of worm creates intense itching you will likely see your dog dragging their bottom across the floor to try and relieve the itch!

Hookworms (Ancylostoma and Uncinaria) – These get their name because they will hook themselves to the intestinal walls of your dog and can be fatal to younger dogs. Typically this type of worm will be lethal to pops. Dogs can get this type of worm by way of the larval penetrating the skin. Pups can also get this nasty little worm from their mother as well.

Symptoms – This type of worm will literally suck the life from your dog by way of its blood, some noticeable signs that your dog has them will be a loss of nutrients and anemia. This will happen quickly and it would be hard not to notice as your dog starts to look extremely unhealthy. You will see the insides of their nose; ears, lips and other such areas get extremely pale. Their feces will become very tarry like and dark in color. Should the worm move to the lungs you will notice your dog coughing. If you choose not to get immediate attention for your dog they will surely not survive it.

Heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) – By far this is the most serious form of worm for your dog. Your dog can get this type of worm by way of mosquitoes and they can be most lethal. It will only take a few of this type of worm to start to quickly destroy the heart muscles of your dog. In the early stages of this type of infestation your pet is not likely to show any symptoms and that makes them even more deadly.

Symptoms – Typically the first sign of the heartworm will be a very nasty cough; as though they have been smoking four packs a day for the last fifty years. As I am sure that you can imagine this is will often be accompanied by a shortness of breath and possibly even fainting. By the time things have gotten this far your dog will be very weak with high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. If your dog comes this far without treatment then your dogs’ days are numbered.

The bottom line is that the signs that your pet has worms can range from being mild and barely noticeable to very extreme. Although it might seem like there are a lot of worms out there trying to get your dog, the truth is that some of these are preventable and are extremely effective treatments for your pet. It is extremely important that you have a good understanding of the symptoms of the different worm infestations and that you use preventive measures as well as a heartworm medication for the life of your pet.

Food Safety and the Four Hour Cold Rule

Temperature control must be strictly adhered to ensure the safety of food on the receipt, storage, preparation, cooking and serving of ingredients. The temperature danger zone is between 5 and 63 degrees Celsius. Food, after preparation and cooking, must be kept out of this zone. When hot food has been cooked, it must be retained above 63 degrees to remain free from bacterial growth. Food Safety pathogens will not grow above this temperature. Once food is cooked to 75 degrees C it is safe to eat, all bacteria have been killed. If food is retained at the correct hot-holding temperature, it can be served indefinitely, as it is going to remain safe at that temperature. (Although food quality would be greatly affected by retaining it for that length of time!). No vegetative pathogens will survive temperatures above 60 degrees C, so perhaps cooking to 75 is slightly overkill.

If high risk food is being served cold, it must be refrigerated between 1 and 4 degrees C and held at that temperature until served. Sandwiches and baguettes with protein fillings, pork pies, pates, cold meats, seafood, etc can all cause food poisoning if left at warm temperatures, as any bacteria or spores present will start to grow to dangerous levels. (Spores would only grow as vegetative pathogens after germinating.) It is the vast numbers of bacteria that cause food poisoning. Foodborne diseases are caused by fewer bacteria, which are termed low dose pathogens.

Although there is no time limit to how long hot food can held, from a food safety point of view, cold food can prove to be a problem if held for too long at refrigeration temperatures. Moulds, for example, can start to grow on food within several days, even in very cold conditions.

In the UK, the Four Hour Cold Rule can be used to good effect if there is a rapid turnover of cold food or if refrigerated storage breaks down. If, for example, a batch of sandwiches are prepared for service to the public, and is held in refrigerated display, and that equipment was to subsequently break down, the temperature of the food would start to increase to within the temperature danger zone. In those circumstances, one would be allowed to sell the sandwiches for a maximum of 4 hours from the time of preparation. If any remain after the 4 hours, they must be disposed of.

Some baguette/sandwich companies, which have a quick turnover of product, such as in train stations and airports, are allowed to sell their wares without refrigerating their products, due to this ruling. This ensures the sensory qualities of the food are enhanced. (There is nothing worse than cold rolls or baguettes).

This 4 hour ruling can be considered to be a food safety hazard, however, especially if buffet items are festering for 4 hours, after being prepared, in a warm room. If there are already bacteria present, which there will be, (from handling, environmental particles, cross contamination), they can multiply quite significantly in 4 hours. Bacteria can double in size every 10 minutes. In four hours bacteria will double in size 24 times. If only 10 bacteria are present at the start of the 4 hours, 10 to the power of 24 bacteria will grow in that time. (That is quite a few! In the order of trillions. It only takes 10 to the power of 6 Salmonella to cause food poisoning).

How to Use Natural Remedies For Ulcers Caused by Helicobacter Pylori

One of the bacteria that live in your mouth and cause gingivitis is the helicobacter pylori or H. pylori. This bacterium is transmitted by kissing. Everyone have this bacterium in his or her mouth and stomach. You mostly likely got this when you were a youngster and were kissed by your parents and all kinds of relatives.

When these bacteria enter your stomach and small intestine, they wait for an opportunity to multiple. When you eat junk food, overeat, mix foods incorrectly, use NASID’s or have continual stress, excess stomach acid is created. This weakens the stomach lining and gives H. pylori a chance to embed into these weak areas and multiple.

So, how to do you use natural remedies to relieve a stomach ulcer? There are to two proven methods to do this.

First you can use Mastic Gum.

In a recent issue of Life Enhancement Ezine, this story appeared,

“My daughter was diagnosed with H. pylori. When her doctor insisted on giving her antibiotics, she declined, and the doctor thought she was foolish for doing so. Instead, my daughter went on a Bye-Lori II regimen. After 4 weeks, she was tested again, and her H. pylori levels had plummeted, showing a 50% decrease in the pathogen. Bye-lori II is product that contains mastic gum. Pure mastic gum capsules are available. Mastic gum, a resin, comes from the sap of the mastic tree in the Mediterranean.

Mastic gum’s action in the stomach or intestines is to kill the H. pyloric bacteria and to reduce and heal the ulcer inflammation.

Second you can use Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice or DLG.

DLG is a natural product made from the herb licorice root. Researchers have found DLG just as effective in treating ulcer as using the drugs Tagament, Zantac, Prilosec, or Prevacid.

DLG stimulates release of secretin, which protects the lining of the stomach or intestines. In the past, antacids were used to self-treat ulcers. Because antacids have excess sodium, aluminum, side effects such as diarrhea, constipation, and raise stomach acid, it is best not to use them.

DLG comes in tablets that should be chewed or dissolved in the mouth. DGL is activated by saliva to produce chemicals that help to regenerate cells in inflamed areas of your stomach and intestines.

Typical use for DLG is 750 to 1500 mg taken 30 minutes before meals. Use for around 7 – 15 weeks.

Tension Headache – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

A tension headache is the most commonly prevalent headache. It generally produces a diffuse, usually mild to moderate pain over the head. Many people liken the feeling to having a tight band around the head. A tension headache may also cause pain in the back of the neck at the base of the skull. Common symptoms include a headache; tenderness in the scalp, neck and shoulder muscles; insomnia; fatigue; irritability; loss of appetite; and difficulty in concentration. Tension headache is not usually associated with visual or other general disturbances and is not aggravated by activity. The exact cause of tension headache is not known; previously it was considered to be related to muscular tension, and currently, it is believed to be related to changes in the brain neurotransmitters. Tension headache can be either episodic or chronic, and is potentially triggered by stress, depression, anxiety, lack of sleep, skipped meals, certain medications and hormonal changes, especially in women.

The Ayurvedic treatment of tension headache is aimed at controlling the symptoms, treating the cause, if known, and preventing recurrence. Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Trayodashang-Guggulu, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Dashmoolarishta, Vish-Tinduk-Vati, Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) and Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina) are used to control the headache. If the headache is usually associated with recurrent sneezing or chronic sinusitis, medicines like Tribhuvan-Kirti, Sitopaladi-Churna, Talisadi-Churna and Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra) are used. If the headache is associated with symptoms of hyper-acidity and peptic ulcer, medicines like Laghu-Sutshekhar, Sutshekhar-Ras, Praval-Bhasma, Shankh-Bhasma, Bhunimbadi-Qadha and Praval-Panchamrut are used. An unpredictable type of headache with irregular periodicity is believed to be due to ‘Vat’ and is treated using medicines like Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Sameer-Pannag-Ras and Bhruhat-Vat-Chintamani-Ras.

Godanti-Bhasma (Purified gypsum) and Sarpagandha form the main stay of treatment for tension headache. Pathyadi-Qadha is a herbal combination which is used on a long term basis to control tension headache and prevent recurrence. In order to treat stress-related factors, medicines like Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) and Vacha (Acorus calamus) are used.

Local applications, usually on the forehead, are also used to treat tension headaches. For the ‘Vataj’ and ‘Kaphaj’ types of headaches, a paste of Sunthi (Zinziber officinalis) is applied, while for the ‘Pittaj’ type, a paste containing Chandan (Santalum album), Yashtimadhuk, Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus) and Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis) is used. For intractable headaches, application of leeches on the forehead brings about a dramatic relief from pain.

It is important to rule out serious causes of headache before making the diagnosis of tension headache. Adequate lifestyle modifications need to be made in order to avoid or minimize the known precipitating factors for this condition. Regular physical activity like aerobic exercises, yogic asanas and relaxation techniques like pranayam are very important in controlling and preventing tension headaches.
